Unsung Heroes
A packhouse of J M du Toit Boerdery at Letsitele burnt to smouldering ashes on Wednesday. But in the wake of this disaster is left a legacy of community crisis response that can only be
described as heroic. The loss is estimated at R11 million rand. Neighbours Mahela Boerdery made one of their facilities available to the Du Toits, who still have to pack about 700 000 cartons.

Vlieg praat met die Volk, en krap waar dit jeuk Dear Madam Mayor Mmetle and Madam Municipal Manager Mametja Goodness, the only thing with more m’s is the Limpopo telephone directory — but that is not why Vlieg decided to write to you. Vlieg would like to welcome both of you to your respective offices. Vlieg is entering virgin territory today, no offense, therein that he will be delivering his first contribution in a foreign language. Vlieg has not met either of you lovely ladies, therefore he was unsure if you would understand Die Taal. Although there might be some grammatical errors, Vlieg would rather want you to focus on the contents of his letter. If Vlieg had any black friends, they would call him Ntsi! You are welcome to call him such for the time being, since Ntsi is quite sure that he will become a very close friend of yours in coming years. If this fearlessly truthful publication is anything to go by, it seems as if the appointment of the pair of yourselves was long overdue. Nsti would not quite like to compare it with the coming of the Messiah, at least not yet, but time will tell, as it always does! What you should know about Ntsi, is that he is an early middle aged, white, Afrikaner male. One could say that he works fairly hard, and therefore, admittedly, earns a fair living. Nsti could probably be described best as your average taxpayer. His interests are quite vast, but the one thing he likes keeping himself busy with, is the truth. You might make a mental note of that and consider it as a subtle, yet definite,
threat. Some people consider Ntsi to be a troublemaker. That would be true only if the truth is going to get you into trouble. Ntsi will be monitoring your actions very closely, and as part of his service to the community, will be giving you some useful advice on how to run the town, and warn you if you are treading on thin ice. At least you should consider yourselves very fortunate about one thing. That is that the members of this community have never been able, and Ntsi dare say, will never be able to organize themselves into a proper taxpayers association. This should make your work a little easier. Except, of course, for Ntsi! Ntsi would like to leave you with two thoughts for now. The first is Ntsi’s sincere hope that you are not and will not become politicians. Or should Ntsi rather say, become slaves of politicians. Ntsi is bargaining on the fact that you will be thinkers, doers and getters, true managers. The second is a politically incorrect warning. By being too democratic, you are going to waste a lot of time getting your job done. By virtue of your position, you are allowed to take decisions. Rest assured, if you take the wrong ones, Ntsi will be the first to tell you. If you take the right ones, it will be because you have listened carefully to Ntsi’s advice. Ntsi will be writing again soon ,with some tips on keeping tax payers happy. Dumedisetsa Ntsi

Quarry queries continue Retha Nel and Louis Roux
retha@bulletin.us.com & louis@bulletin.us.com
Property owners at Tarentaalrand are still at loggerheads with Letaba Crushers, the company who uses explosives in their stone quarry nearby. This has become a timeless issue and will probably need the wisdom of King Solomon to resolve. It is now a legal battle between the lawyer of the complainants, Mr JJ Grundlingh, and Webber Wentzel Attorneys (for Letaba Crushers) who has a team of 130 partners. The latest allegations are that “they made empty promises during discussions” with the role players in January — the first time that the complainants were formally recognised in the development of the quarry a year ago. Grundlingh took over after their previous lawyers, Cameron Cross, withdrew their commitment a few months ago. Residents alleged that no environmental impact assessment (EIA) was made before blasting operations started
last year. Some of the complaints are that structure damage was caused to buildings nearby, boreholes collapsed, the noise is bad for tourism in the area and blasting and dust could have a detrimental impact on water quality. Letaba Crushers presented environmental management plans (EMP’s) to the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) which were accepted. After the discussions in January Letaba Crushers undertook to revise its EMP’s for three mining permit applications to the satisfaction of the complainants, but this was not done. A representative of AGES, an environmental friendly group, visited the quarry site and added a list of queries and recommendations for the “revised” EMP’s, but the queries of AGES “were simply clarified in terms of a letter.” Grundlingh advised the legal team of Letaba Crushers that all the facts (or lack thereof) and correspondence about the whole issue will be submitted to the DMR and inform them that none of the concerns have been effectively addressed, before the mining permits will be considered.

Ntsetselelo ‘Lelo’ Mkansi (18) is the newly crowned Miss Nkowankowa 2011. To her left is 1st Princess Mahlatse ‘Hlatse’ Makwela and on the right is Khetani ‘So-Fab’ Ngomane (17), the 2nd Princess. Lelo is a first year Bio-Technology student at Vaal University of Technology and her prime goal as Miss Nkowankowa is to empower the youth to be more positive and dream big. The aim of the event was also to fundraise for the projects of Vantshwa Va Xivono ‘Youth with a Vision’.
Nobody seems to know exactly what is happening in Limpopo, where newly elected councillors are busy to resign in numbers. In Modjajdjiskloof six councillors resigned from the Greater Letaba Municipality this week. Mayor Godfrey City Modjadji confirmed the resignations on Wednesday evening, after an Exco meeting. He said the resignations resulted from a ruling that people cannot serve as public servants and as councillors. This means government officials had to make a choice. In Louis Trichardt fourteen councillors resigned! In Tzaneen one councillor has thus far resigned, but there is talk of more to follow. So far it seems to be ANC councillors who resign in numbers. However, there is rumour in Tzaneen that two DA councillors consider resigning. Ms Desiree van der Walt, the DA leader in Limpopo, on Wednesday night said

Rumours about hijackings in Tzaneen seem to be totally unfounded. According to police spokesperson Capt Simon Shikwambana they have had no reports of any such activity.

A private school in Giyani is battling to save its reputation after wrongfully being accused of deregistration. News of the “deregistration for the past three years” even hit the headlines of another local newspaper, with matriculation candidates demanding their registration fees back. The head of Khulani Learning Centre, Mr Morris Maluleke, is now seeking legal advice, because Khulani was established in 2007 with full registration for pupils from gr 8 to gr 12. The only hiccup in this year’s programme was that the school’s educators were never invited to a compulsory training session to qualify as overseers for matric candidates, which resulted in the school not qualifying to present matric exams. Maluleke urgently gained permission from the public school for his students to write the exams at Giyani Centre. In the mean time the schools’ circuit manager, Mr Maringa, and other regional education officials announced that Khulani was

deregistered for the past three years. Students were up in arms and demanded their registration fees back. However, senior officials in Polokwane’s education department confirmed that Khulani was a registered education centre. The only shortfall was the writing of the matric exams in 2011. Completing the necessary application and training session will allow the school back to full status in 2012. Maluleke didn’t mention names, but said another private school in Giyani was his biggest competitor. “I was shocked by the news, but neither moved nor surprised for I knew that a conspiracy was long in the oven and I was patiently waiting for it to cook. As I taste it now, the ingredients used amongst others are those of my competitor and some department officials. “If I may comment on the taste, the quality is not that high as the oven heat was highly exaggerated. The most unfortunate part is that this contaminated oven product was also fed to the vulnerable children who were promised a (m)ed(i)ucation of high quality.”

Mathew 21: 33 - 43 Last time I wrote about using Proverbs as our daily guide to successful living. We need to gain Wisdom. How do I gain wisdom from a religious perspective? I need to follow Christ’s example, I need to be His disciple and to obey Him. I also need self-examination, to look at myself and see where I falter and therefore I need to get help. This will take finding out who or what I need to help me on my journey. If we look at the parable of the Tenants (Mat. 21: 33 - 43) we can compare it to our own lives. God created the world, in other words He planted the vineyard. He then created us, and gave us control over everything — he rented out the vineyard. He gave us laws to protect and guide us — the wall around the vineyard. Then in His wisdom He left us to get on with it. When He saw that things were not going according to plan, He sent the prophets and we rejected them, yes even put some to death. So sent His Son and what did we do we put Him to death. But we were not successful in stopping Him. Jesus rose from the dead, and He gave us the Holy Spirit to help us. Now if we do not heed God this time around — bang goes our hope for eternal life. Remember He has already given us this but have we accepted it? So we need to produce fruit, build God’s kingdom to what He expects of us. This can be achieved by using the talents, He has already given us, to His praise and glory and not for our own gain. God Bless You All

Nine rapists to serve seventeen life sentences Yvonne Ndlovu
yvonne@bulletin.us.com
Courts in Limpopo during June handed down a total of seventeen life sentences to criminals who committed crimes — especially affecting minors and women. “Sexual assault leaves lifelong scars on victims. The prosecutions and sentences cannot erase those scars, but we can give them the justice they deserve. And in doing so, this significant sentences will protect other women in our communities from suffering similar fates at the hands of the defendants”, said Lt Gen Mashigo, Limpopo’s Police Commissioner. Rape, robbery, attempted murder, kidnapping, abduction, assault, contravention of protection orders and theft are crimes that

Bye-bye driving schools & bribery The first Afsim driving simulation training centre in Limpopo has opened in Tzaneen. Learner drivers can learn to drive and park in a safe environment and when they have completed the course they will be able to take the test for their driver’s licence. Afsim has a mobile site, which is currently at the bottom parking lot of the Misty River Spur. They are open between 08:0017:00. Mr André Liversage from the GTM’s traffic department took a test drive on the simulator. Bizarre disappearance at Tzn dam Beaunice Mnisi
beaunice@bulletin.us.com
A 29 year old man disappeared while fishing at the Tzaneen dam on Saturday morning, police spokesman Capt Simon Shikwambana confirmed on Wednesday. The man from Bushbuckridge and his fishing partner (also 29) from Phalaborwa allegedly went fishing underneath the twin bridges at the Tzaneen dam. The two men were allegedly asleep underneath the bridge when one of them woke up to check on their fishing net. Nee, mense, dit werk tog nie so nie!
He reportedly went on their canoe and never returned. His fishing partner woke up, realised that he had not returned and went to search for him. After a long search he went to seek help from a Sangoma and then later went to the Modjadjiskloof police to report his friend as missing. He was referred to the Tzaneen police station and a search was conducted with divers. Shikwambana said they recovered the canoe and fishing net but the man has not been found. Police are conducting regular searches with hope that his body will surface.

The icy weather in Haenertsburg didn’t deter guests who enjoyed the annual Holistic Fair in the Village Hall. There was curry and rice, pancakes, various soups, cheeses and relishes at the entrance and a minimal fee for the Village Hall upkeep. Inside, Lynne Stanley (38) demonstrated her meditation stools she and her son Andre (17) make. Lynne matriculated at Capricorn High in Polokwane and then joined parents Richard and Barbara in the familyrun business outside Tzaneen. She said “I’ve been into meditation a long time. I’ve travelled the East and I enjoy their philosophies. I copied this stool from the Buddhist temple in Bronkhorstspruit simply because it was something my son and I could do together on weekends. I’m a full time student in Phalaborwa and he’s at Merensky during the week”. The concept of these stools is simple. Tucking one’s feet under the crossbar takes the entire pressure off the body to allow the mind to destress in whatever way is comfortable. The stools have been left plain
so that each owner can decorate them as desired. Lynne’s parents sent her on an educational trip to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan after matric. She’s also taught oral English in China. She trawled the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) shops. Her fascination with TCM is the healing properties of roots and herbs, not snake skins and animal parts. She decided to conquer her terrible fear of snakes and did her basic bush courses at the Reptile Park in Hoedspruit. “Each reptile has its own characteristics and one has to know how to treat each one respectfully. I still want to do the venomous snake course.” Lynne studied Thai cuisine in Bangkok and laments that galangal, from the ginger family, isn’t available in SA. “It’s got a very different fragrance and taste and that’s what makes it so uniquely Thai.” Lynne is a lacto over vegetarian, as she believes in contributing towards a better world. She still eats cheese but rennet free (no calf stomach lin-
ing), eats only free range or indigenous eggs and only drinks milk where cows have a healthier lifestyle. Woolworths gets the thumbs up for that. She’s now doing her two-year course to obtain five internationally recognised diplomas at the Hotel School in Phalaborwa. Then she hopes to return to the Haenertsburg area to open a Karma Free restaurant. — Photos & report by Susan Ettmayr

A Magoebaskloof farmer caught thieves stealing forest vines and ferns worth thousands upon thousands of rand from his indigenous forest. This is the first known major bust of its kind. Avocado pear farmers in the Haenertsburg area lost some R40, 000 worth of produce to thieves the weekend of 18 June. Electric fences were slashed and eight men were seen making off in a white Colt. The Haenertsburg police were called but could not find the farm road, a mere five kilometer from their offices. The following weekend Mr Ed Hillary, who farms on the Cheerio road, was patrolling his lands in the early hours of the morning on Sunday 26 June, as he was concerned about his avocado pear plantations. He came upon a one ton white Nissan truck XMC 982 GP with trailer in his indigenous forest. Five people were involved, but two of them, on the chassis behind the cab, jumped off and melted into the darkness. A chase ensued and Hillary managed to block their way at the Cheerio turnoff before the thieves could escape back to Johannesburg. The other three, with some fifty black refuse bags bulging with forest vines and forest ferns on the trailer, were arrested and taken to the Haenertsburg police. Florah Mathabatha (18), girlfriend of the driver from Mariaastad, was released. The other two, Ntimi Ntsoahe (31) and Oscar Lita (25) from Johannesburg, were held in the police cells and appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They pleaded guilty and got a paltry fine of R500 each. It has long been rumoured that the head honcho of this illegal business is a Zimbabwean. The thieves admitted that their boss and owner of the vehicle is a Mr K Mwaparadza from Zimbabwe, who lives in Johannesburg. The Haenertsburg police contacted him and he promised to come and make a statement,
and hasn’t been heard of since. The indigenous forests of the Magoebaskloof have been raped of vines and ferns for years. The ecological damage is irreparable and it takes decades for the forests to recover when vines are stolen. Without vines the indigenous trees are exposed to sunlight and die. The vines are pliable and fashioned into baskets and floral accessories highly sought after in South African city centres. Buyers have to be made aware that purchasing forest vine baskets with or without the ferns is illegal. Various government departments were contacted but refused to comment. — Photo & report by Susan Ettmayr

Tzaneeners voer botoon Vossie-skuts weer in die kol in Lim se sewesrugbyspan Die Limpopo o.18-sewestoernooi is Maandag in Louis Trichardt gehou.

This week’s fitness tip Ettienne van Wyngaardt (Fitness specialist)
I visited a few businesses these past two weeks to find out if their company would be interested in participating in the spinning marathon for charity. It came to me as a big shock to see that there are so many companies with so many people that work for them, but not one of them are healthy and fitness orientated. But as soon as something happens to them like a heart attack or stroke, they want to start living
healthy. I am sorry to give you the bad news, but then it’s too late, the damage has been done. And what most owners don’t know is that the fitter and healthier their staff are, the better they will perform at work. So I challenge all companies to start with a health and fitness awareness month, and don’t wait for someone else to start, you must set the example and the rest will follow.

Austin Langeveld was afwesig.

Letaba knak Noordelikes Jean Aucamp
jean@bulletin.us.com
