Size doesn’t matter

Eucommonsentia klageknihali?

Let wel: Hulle sê nie so nie!

GLM launches women caucus

Seen at the launch of the Greater Letaba Municipality’s women’s caucus are the newly appointed deputy secretary of the caucus, Ms Idar Matloga, the secretary, Ms Jane Rababalela, the speaker of the GLM, Ms Rosinah Ramalatso and GLM mayor Godfrey City Modjadji.

Summit urges men to respect women Women are too tolerant, according to what came up during a men’s summit, which was hosted by Giyani Men’s Forum (GMF) and chaired by Giyani mayor Pat Hlungwani in Giyani. During the summit, “What a real man is,” men debated various issues, including ways to behave in a good manner that did not ruin the lives of their wives or families. Addressing the delegates on behalf of Greater Giyani Municipality, Gezani Maluleke said most women would stay in an unhappy relationship for the sake of making things happen. “We would beat them and massage their wounds thereafter, cheat on them knowing we would be forgiven,” he said. He said most women want to feel proud of their families so that they don’t reveal what is happening inside their families.

Three Pakistani men shot

The body of a sixty year-old man was discovered by his employers at Gradwell chicken farm, Khujwana, on Tuesday. The man was found lying dead in a pool of blood inside a guard room. He had a gunshot wound in his chest. The deceased was residing on GV26, a farm in Georges Valley. The police searched the scene for clues, but the suspects and the motive are still unknown. Meanwhile in Bolubedu South at Fobeng, three Pakistani men were shot on Tuesday night by an unknown man wearing a black balaclava and blue work overalls. According to Tzaneen Cluster head of communications, it is believed that the tuck shop had just been newly opened. The suspect came to the tuck shop and shot the three men through a steel door. The thirty year-old man was shot in his stomach and died instantly, the second victim aged 29 was shot twice in his thigh and was taken to a nearby hospital. The third victim (19) only sustained minor injuries. Empty shelffs from a fire arm were found at the scene. No arrests have been made. Police are appealing to community members to come forward with any relevant information and contact the Tzaneen SAPS on 015 306 2187 or 0800 10111 — Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com

This leads to some ending up suffering from depression or committing suicide when they can’t take it anymore. “They would bleed inside Maluleke and still not tell the world about our dirty laundries while we continue to offend them knowing our secret is covered,” he said. “Even if we don’t pay electricity bills or buy food for them, we still come back home to that warm smile,” he went on, urging men to respect women. Meanwhile deputy chairperson of the GMF Gabriel Ngobeni described a real man as a man “that loves and protect his family,” not the one that use their masculine to beat women or rape them. — Orlando Chauke orlando@bulletin.us.com

‘New Home Affairs Office in Letsitele’

The Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) officially launched its women caucus at a conference centre in Modjadjiskloof. The caucus is aimed at helping women overcome the many challenges they are faced with in their day-to-day lives. GTM loses a stalwart pointed as a director in 2006. She worked as chief administrator of housing for a long time and achieved much in this post. “I’m glad for the opportunity I had and for the exposure to this portfolio. We built a huge number of houses in Dan village and Mawa. We also spent R2,6 million training the youth. I’m happy to have been part of this exercise and that I could assist in making such a contribution,” she said. She describes corruption as one of the main challenges that she had to tackle. She says corruption followed as a result of wrong perceptions. “Elderly people who don’t understand the system and thought they had to pay officials… people who don’t qualify for housing and then forge documents… these are the sort of problems that caused corruption to grow,” she told us. Masionoke added that balancing housing allocations was a critical challenge, saying some ward councillors wanted their areas to be prioritised. “We had to educate and teach people that they don’t have to bribe officials… houses are for free. This certainly

One of the GTM’s popular, best qualified and competent directors has also left the institution. She agreed to an exclusive interview with the Bulletin and Percy Mthombeni tells more about the lady on a mission. As the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) battles to get its house in order after the recent unexpected and disruptive loss of the municipal manager, the chief financial officer, the director of community services, and the earlier loss of the directors of corporate services and engineering services, the former director of planning and economic development prepares her bright future out- side the GTM. Ms Faith Mashianoke, who acted as municipal manager at a number of occasions and who again took charge during last month’s fiasco, also left the GTM on 30 June. There is widespread belief that she left a shining legacy and performed outstandingly during her tenure as a director. Mashianoke joined the GTM in 1996 and she held different positions before being ap-

helped us to curb the corruption and change the perceptions of the people.” Faith Mashianoke was the second black women to be appointed in senior position in the then male dominated GTM. “My department had a rather limited budget, but unity made it possible for me to initiate and implement plans.” The creation of the Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency (GTeda) is something that she will treasure. It was the brainchild of her department. She also initiated a feasibility study to look at how the Letaba airfield could be used for commercial purpose aviation. Other developments championed by her department include the building of the Tzaneng Mall and the launch of the Greater Tzaneen community radio station (GTfm). She also shared with us on some of the other developments that will be rolled out, hopefully in the not too distant future. These include the building of the sports centre in Nkowankowa and the rehabilitation of the Tzaneen CBD. She said the plans are aimed at changing the look of Tzaneen to make it tourist friendly and economically sustainable. Masionoke said she had a good inter-working relationship with various units within the GTM. She applauded Mr Andre le Grange, the former chief financial officer, saying he was always willing to make plans to help her department financially, to enable her to achieve some of the groundbreaking projects.

She has also worked hard to improve the relationship between the GTM and government agencies such as SEDA and LIBSA, resulting in the end that more funds were secured and used to help cooperates such as Nkomamonta. She told us that she is confident that her successor will make it, if the person continues from where she has left the department. “We have done a lot and I feel grateful, as a woman, to have been at the centre. Even though my contract ended, I’m happy that most of the work has been done.” Mashianoke held a BA and a post graduate diploma in town planning development when she joined the GTM. That, however, was not enough for this dynamic woman and she obtained a BA Admin degree, while working and caring for her family. She is currently studying for her master’s degree in municipal finance. She will start in her new post at Letelle-Nkumpi municipality as director of planning and economic development. Masionoke did not want to rule out the possibility of coming back to the GTM sometime in the future, saying “I needed a change in my environment”. She also owns a small clothing shop in the Mall. She started it as part of an exit strategy before she got appointed by Letelle-Nkumpi in her new post. • Masionoke is respected for keeping a safe distance from politcal activities in the workplace and people say they never felt that she was busy driving poltical issues. —Percy Mthombeni

Police in Letsitele arrested five suspects for fraud and possession of stolen property, linked to a scam with fake certificates. Limpopo provincial police Spokesman Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said that the suspects aged 29 and 57 were arrested for allegedly making fake birth certificates. Investigations were prompted by a minor who went to the

Department of Home Affairs in Giyani to apply for an identity document. Officials at the department realized that the birth certificate was a fake and alerted the police. The minor told the police where he had obtained the certificate and this led the police to a “home made home affairs office”, in Nkambako at Letsitele. The police recovered a scanner, keyboard, computer, six fake birth certificates, a laminating machine, application forms and inventors. It is believed that the suspects used a dated Home Affairs stamp, but did not recover it. Joel Malati (57) Albino Manyike (33), Friday Ngobeni (36) and Jalina Ndlovu (29) appeared in court today for a bail application. Mulaudzi warned the public to be aware of people trying to make money through making fake birth certificates and identity documents. — Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com

The Tzaneen Cluster Community Policing Forum in conjunction with the Maake CPF launched a door-todoor campaign at Lenyenye. The campaign was aimed at making community members aware of the influence of the community in curbing crime. The campaign was run under the theme ”Fighting crime together with the police effectively and successfully.” During the launch special T-shirts were handed over to the CPF members. The T-shirts are meant to make the members visible and for them to be easily identifiable by community members. The T-shirt message reads: Tzaneen Cluster of CPF and SAPS together squeezing crime to zero. Community members were also encouraged to support their community police forums and Sector forums. Pamphlets were also distributed to inform the community on matters such as personal safety and safety of their properties. The Tzaneen Clus-

Hoe pateties!

When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President. I’m beginning to believe it — Clarence Darrow

Belangriste tale: Zoeloe 21,5%, Afrikaans 16,7%, Engels 12,5%, Suid-Sotho 13,1%, Noord-Sotho 10,7%, Tswana 8,4%, Xhosa 7,6%, Tsonga 5,7%. KwaZulu-Natal: 9,426 miljoen inwoners. Belangrikste tale: Zoeloe 80,9%, Engels 15,6%, Afrikaans 1,6%.

There is an old saying “Those who pray together stay together” in our modern world I wonder how many people still believe in this saying. If I look at how many people are getting divorced and how many families are in crisis then I can only come to one conclusion: This principal no longer stands. People may argue that they say grace at every meal, but as I remember the old farming community and many Afrikaans families some years ago had a special time set aside for “Boeke vat” this was a time when the family got together and read from the scriptures, said prayers and gave thanks to God. Normally it was the father who led this time. In today’s world we often think that we are too busy or that the children are really not interested in doing this. How many of us have asked our children what they want in the form of a prayer time? Or have we just made the assumption that they would rather not do this? It is time that we, especially the men took our rightful place in the family and became once again godly. We as males are supposed to lead our families in all walks of life even if it means that we are considered “old fashioned.” Now I believe that this is possibly the reason that we as a nation have “fallen off the bus” as far as religion is concerned. People often use the excuse as to say “they must make their own decisions” where children come into play. But they often follow our principals, the way we live and react to situations. It is in how we guide them that they can make the right decisions. Often we shirk this responsibility and leave them to find their own way and then put the blame on society, the schools and the church. I challenge you all to reconsider your role in your own family and in the family of God. Let us all become a more godly nation and ask God for guidance, remember we are not alone in this, He is always with us. Blessings

Letters • Briewe my gemoedstoestand is nie juis “lekker” nie.

grond, net aan my kant.

I think not. Onthou net, ek was daar!

What will it be: Tzaneng, Tzanana or will it stay Tzaneen? Introduction: In its media release on the 17th June 2011, the Department of Arts and Culture, stated the following: “The South African Constitution mandates government and, indeed, the entire nation to take steps to redress the injustices of the past. Among such injustices was the consistent denigration, debasement, and corruption of African expressions, words, names, and especially place names, in the past. In order to ensure stability and to minimize the threat of confusion, South Africans collectively agreed that this necessary process of redress would be governed by law and would be as inclusive as possible. These procedures to be followed were written into laws that enjoyed the support of a wide range of political parties, reflecting the degree of consensus reached around the issue. The law regarding name changes provides that any citizen, property owner or developer , organized body, government department, local authority, as well as the South African Post Offices, is eligible to apply to have place name changed or re-confirmed. Applicants are required to offer motivation for the change they seek and should provide supportive information, such as the origin, meaning, the form, spelling of the proposed name, historical evidence, justifying its adoption such as oral traditions, archives, documents, or other relevant facts that may be required.” I quoted the above media release at length because what follows hereunder, more in particular my objection to the change of the name of “Tzaneen” revolves around the principles and guidelines set out therein. Process leading to current proposed name change: The is-

It seems that the majority of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s councillors are favouring a new move for a name change for Tzaneen. Lekgolo Lazarus Ramalepe and Phetole David Mohubidu from Tzaneen say NO to a name change for the town and district. They have done extensive research, that we will bring to our readers over the next couple of weeks. It could help for people to make up their minds as well.

sue of geographical features names’ change in Limpopo has always been of great concern and arouse unpleasant feelings amongst citizens. The reason is that as long as the Limpopo Geographical Names Change Committee does not refrain from aligning itself with the political parties only, especially the ruling ANC alone, there will always be chaotic dissatisfaction amongst citizens. The issue of place names change is an issue of citizens’ concern and should as such be raised and deliberated upon by the majority of the local citizens of a particular place to be affected. It is the ultimate right of the affected citizens whose heritage is being tempered with to be consulted with, including rural and urban communities and with their civil and traditional, religious and related structural leadership. Much as any individual, traditional leadership or political party may initiate some ideas regarding place names change they should not take it upon themselves to impose such proposed names as it is not the prerogative of any party or individual alone to determine place names change, especially

traditional names that are or have been in place as were provided by indigenous people of that place. Looking on the Greater Tzaneen Information Map, 2010 covering Greater Tzaneen, Greater Letaba, Greater Giyani and BaPhalaborwa a range of indigenous and long existing names that “… are part of the historical, cultural and linguistic heritage of the nation, which it is more desirable to preserve than destroy” have been either changed or replaced during the past governments and mostly during the present democratic government without consulting with the rightful people of that particular heredity (Handbook on Geographical Names, 2002). On July 05th, 2011 as I was browsing through the internet I came across an article by the Polokwane Observer Online with the heading: Bendor to Ike Maphoto. Headed by its Chairperson Mr Boy Mamabolo, and in justifying the renaming of Bendor to Maphoto, the Limpopo Geographical Names Change Committee concluded in the last paragraph of the article: “The provincial structure would also be interacting with political parties across the board from next week onwards for them to provide names of their icons for areas to be named after their struggle heroes, he said in conclusion. The committee is still engaged in processes pertaining to possible name changes for Lebowakgomo, Seshego and Tzaneen.”(www.observer.co.za/stories/bendorike-maphoto; 20 May, 2010). • To be continued next week.

Hy was ook betrokke by kerskonserte by die Brooklyn-teater in Pretoria. In Januarie vanjaar was hy betrokke by ‘n Mozart galakonsertreeks. Dirk lag, “’n Goeie show is soos ‘n adrenalien kick. —retha@bulletin.us.com

Sanral to assist GLM Last year the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) asked the SA National Road Agency (Sanral) to assist them with the cost of fixing the main street of Modjadjiskloof. Sanral has now agreed to assist the GLM, but the process is still expected to take long. According to Ms Lovers Sibanda, the GLM’s communi-

The GLM and Sanral are busy negotiating with a contractor to undertake the work.

Mayor’s explanation rejected The community of Mahlathi near Giyani has rejected the Greater Giyhani Municipality’s explanation on service delivery. This happened during a visit by the GGM’s Exco members at the village, to respond to issues raised in the memorandum that the community had earlier submitted to the GGM regarding service delivery in the village. The community wanted clarity on a number of issues related to water, toilets, a clinic and a tarred road that had allegedly been promised. According to Mr Patrick Baloyi, a community leader in the village, “the IDP budget of 2009/2010 indicated that a clinic was to be built in the village”. However, it was not built. “We want to know where has that budget been shifted to,” he said. The people also asked what happened to the remainder of the toilets that had apparently been promised to indigents in the village, of which only 200 out of 4 010 have been built.

In response, mayor Pat Hlungwani told the community that infrastructure was not the municipality’s responsibility, but provincial government’s. “However, housing infrastructure is our responsibility, such as toilets, RDPs and others, and this is done in phases and are built according to the availability of the budget in a particular year,” he said. “If in phase one toilets are built and your name is not there, it doesn’t meant that you will not get it,” he said. “You will be considered in the next phase when they allocate another budget for toilets,” he said. According to him, one of the causes of the delays in the infrastructure development could be the central government’s administration in Limpopo. The mayor said bringing water tanks to help with the storage of borehole water that the residents have been complaining about, is being attended to. However, the residents were not happy with the mayor’s explanations and threatened to march to the GGM’s offices. “We would like to put on record that we’re not happy with the explanation you gave us – there’re lot of questions left unanswered,” concluded Baloyi, as people started walking out of the meeting. — Orlando Chauke orlando@bulletin.us.com

Multipurpose sport court keeps kids off the streets Mopani district mayor Joshua Matlou has welcomed the new multipurpose sport court built by the Sports Trust Board at Charley Rhangani High school in Mageva village near Giyani, as “an investment that will ben-

efit the community tremendously.” The sport court is said to accommodate soccer, basketball, netball, and volleyball, most of which are not known in the poor communities, according to the president of the

The choir of Charley Rhangani High School performed on the new multipurpose sport court during its official handover to the school.

Sports Council in Giyani Austin Makamu, who expressed concern about the lack of new sporting codes in rural areas. “If you look around here, you’ll find that out of the number of the sporting codes that we have in Giyani and the district as a whole the only sporting code that is viable is football,” he said. “The rest are not viable in rural areas due to lack of facilities,” he went on, saying the multipurpose sport court was a break through to the government’s quest of developing various sporting codes in the villages. Meanwhile, the executive mayor Joshua Matlou supported Makamu’s statement saying the sport court would “do a great job in taking the kids off the streets,” because of its multipurpose functions. “This means that there will be many kids that would be taking up new sporting codes – and that would increase the number of kids that would be taken off the streets and be absorbed in various sporting codes,” he said. The multipurpose sport court is said to worth R1million with a life expectancy of

between ten and twenty years according to Maseda Ratshikuni the representative of the Sports Trust Board. According to him, they have built nine similar facilities around the country so far as a way of promoting sports in the rural areas. “The main reasons we chose these kinds of facilities is because they last long, and can remain intake for a period of about twenty years,” he explained. “The thing about building a community facility is that, if we were to put grass here, we’d need water and a lot of other maintenance which might require extra funds,” he said. Despite being built within the premises of Charley Rhangani high school, the sport court is said to serve all the schools in the surrounding villages. However, the executive mayor warned that a small fee should be charged in order for Charley Rhangani High school to keep control and maintain the facility as the host. Importance of goal setting and planning by Damian Jansen van Rensburg A goal is a desired result a person plans to achieve and commits to its purpose. Without goals your training efforts will be directionless and demotivational. Training goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-targeted. Or S.M.A.R.T for short. Any goals that are set must be SPECIFIC to what you want to achieve, MEASURABLE in the sense of assessments that are done regarding strength, measurements, fat percentage, etc. ATTAINABLE goals can be achieved through your efforts. REALISTIC goals shouldn’t be far fetched and should rather be done step by step. TIME-TARGET your

goals, this could be anything from session times to amount of weeks or months you would like to reach your goal. Remember, don’t stare yourself blind against the big goal you would like to achieve, rather break it down into smaller time segments and smaller goals, as this will keep you motivated and on track. For professional personal training contact Titanium Fitness 079 892 6513 or titaniumfit@gmail.com. Next week: Relapse prevention and motivation

taking on Supersport United. The launch was attended by dignitaries from the Mopani District Municipality including the President of SAFA Mopani Region, and representatives from participating teams. The launch is expected to be followed by a series of mass mobilisation roadshows which will be held in all the five local municipalities within Mopani District.
