Waarvoor is die GTM so bang?

Half a meter of rain fell in twelve hours in the Lowveld in January. Hundreds of people were stranded, many in trees and on roofs. Everyone pulled together in a rescue effort that lasted 72 hours and included everything from simply providing blankets and food to plucking people out of the water with helicopters. This event is what led to the team above being nominated as one of the sixteen semi-finalists in the Centrum® Guardian Project 2012. This team will be profiled on SABC3 in a thirteen-week documentary drama series, hosted by Ruda Landman. Representatives from the various agencies responding to the large scale floods are: Jonas Zandamela (crew leader Working on Fire), Capt Jolanda Odendaal (AFB Hoedspruit Health Centre), Lt Col Pieter Prinsloo

(AFB Hoedspruit Health Centre), Mr Eugene Schreiber (Dept of Health Emergency Medical Services), Maj Henk Pietersen (19th Squadron Oryx Pilot), Const Rulph Molobela (SAPS Mounted Unit), Maj Joe Meyer (19th Squadron Augusta Pilot), W/o Rory Lawson (19th Squadron Flight Safety Officer), Const Cas Swanepoel (SAPS Air Wing), Mr Hannes Steyn (Disaster Management), Capt Joey Potgieter (SAPS Dive Unit), Lt Col Rapule Boshomane (AFB Hoedspruit), Lt Christo van Zyl (19th Squadron Augusta Pilot), Mr Anton Strydom (Off Road Rescue Unit), Col Andre Barends (Officer Commanding AFB Hoedspruit), Col Kevin Moonsamy (AFB Hoedspruit), Lt Kenny Tsotsetsi (Oryx Co-Pilot 19th Squadron), W/o Danie Theron (SAPS K9 Unit) and Bertus (the dog).

Social tragedy! We can fly to the moon, but this 76 year-old face is a woeful indictment to our uncaring society... Turn to page 5

Dit was regtig nie so great nie.

Ontwrig so veel as wat julle wil. Net ‘n vroegtydige waarskuwing. Dankie Johan, dit was great! Pat Patterson The only problem being the organisation of traffic flow and sometimes we have to grin and bear this as the injection into our town economy far outweighs the traffic problem. So WHAT if we close a small section of the road for part of the day? And even so, there are at least several more roads that will take just a little longer, but you will get to the Kruger, I promise you, even if it is just a few minutes later! Really, after thinking about it again, what a ridiculous statement or even asking for comments of the issue! You have to be brain dead to even question why the race is there and why the road was partially closed. Seriously? Do we have people so small minded? Seriously? Emil Natorp Eenkeer gebeur daar iets in Tzaneen, dan wil iemand grom. Net gekyk! Tanx M2M, hou so aan. Lino De Carvalho We trust that the race will get bigger and mean more financial gain and exposure for our beautiful town. So, next year we will plan better and cause less commotion, but let’s work together for the benefit of our town!

Hy is so gebore.

Toe hy opdaag was daar egter niemand nie.

SAPS on the hunt for six The police are on the hunt for six men linked to the robbery at Rubbervale (Gravelotte) on the farm of Mr Theo de Marillac on Friday. Const Phineas Masihla, Gravelotte police communications officer, said six men entered the farm and went to the domestic worker’s room. They forced her to hand them the keys for the house. The suspects then went into the house, where they cut open the safe. They took

firearms and jewelry and ran away. ”We appeal to all farm owners to keep their security tight and if they find or see something suspicious, they should contact their nearest police station.” Masihla urged the public to contact the police if they see the suspects, and to be on high alert, since the men are armed and very dangerous. — Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com

Happiness after arrest of ‘terrorist’ The community of Mulati Viel at Letsitele is jubilating after the man who had terrorised their community was arrested as a result of fingerprint records. Limpopo provincial police spokesman Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, said the 32-year-old suspect and his three accomplices broke into a house in Mulati Viel in May. The four men had firearms and knives. They robbed the man of valuable items including DVD’S, cell phones and an undisclosed amount of cash. Extensive police investigations done at the crime scene enabled the police to positively link the suspect with the crime. The suspect is believed

sible for production, Boekee was in charge of sales and Schoeman for the financial and administrative side of the business. Boyce personally handled every aspect of the production — from origination, design, artwork, paper slitting, printing and rewinding to dispatch. He bought out the other two partners at the end of 1983 and his wife joined the business. The business grew and their son-in-law, Mr Rui Freitas, later joined the management team. In 2000 they moved to their present premises in Tzaneen. Lowveld Labels currently employ twenty people and the business has become fully computerised and motorised. They have two-, three- and four-colour machines as well as their newest addition, a six-colour machine and a new Primera digital label printing machine. They mainly serve clients in the Limpopo Province, including the agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Most of their clients are very satisfied and loyally support the business. In March 2011 the owners retired and ownership changed to Messrs Rowan Deacon and Rui Freitas. The business has grown substantially since then, with new technology being implemented in all fields of the business. New products include signage, Tshirts and flyers.

— Redakteur

Where are the bins? Esna Marais from Letsitele writes by email: I saw your article in the Bulletin and have some questions regarding it. We moved from Pretoria to Letsitele in January this year. We are used to recycling and continued to do so while living in Letsitele, going to Tzaneen once in a while to put our recycling in the bins that were at

Dit klink alles so logies! Mooi naweek!

Letters • Briewe two of the Sasol service stations in town. During May some time these bins were removed and now we don’t know where we should take our recycling or who to contact to pick it up. Not everybody I know, reads the Bulletin, so how should they know to put their recycling in any coloured bag? Will the garbage truck in Letsitele also know what the other coloured bag is for? I am more than happy to go to a recycling bin to drop off my recycling if someone will please provide such bins in Letsitele and Tzaneen. I am all for recycling, but Tzaneen does not make it easy to recycle. What happened to the bins that were there? Why were they taken away? • This is the umpteenth attempt by the GTM to encourage residents to recycle and to use coloured bags — Editor

Geskok Christen fietsryer skryf per e-pos: Ek het

Bulletin

What will it be: Tzaneng, Tzanana or will it stay Tzaneen? Part 2 Possible name change for Tzaneen, again? Who could be the legitimate complainant against the present neutral and standard name of Tzaneen against which an attempt to change its name to Mark Shoppe in 2002 was defended by the citizens of the Mopani District? With whom was the possible name change of Tzaneen contemplated, and for what good reason? For whose benefit should the name Tzaneen change? Who hates the name Tzaneen? Many, many questions could be asked and one would like to assume none of the best answers to any questions regarding the name change of Tzaneen could provide any satisfaction to any one person or group of people; unless, perhaps for purposes of tribal or political reasons. It is astounding that the political parties intended to be interacted with across the board, kept it to themselves as the civil society was never interacted nor consulted with until the latest announcement as mentioned on the front page of the Bulletin of 27 April 2012 that the new names of Tzaneen were suggested, namely Tzaneng and Tzanana (what a strange name?). It appeared again on page 5 of another local paper of Vrydag 9 Maart 2012 that “ANC discusses name changes for the civic centres of

It seems that the majority of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s councillors are favouring a name change for Tzaneen. Lekgolo Lazarus Ramalepe and Phetole David Mohubidu from Tzaneen say NO to a name change. They have researched the issue and we will present it over the next couple of weeks.

Tzaneen, Giyani, Letaba, Phalaborwa and Maruleng.” It further states that “The discussions that will start this week, will include possible name changes for streets in the region’s towns and townships.” Talk of names change for civic centres, streets in towns and townships? Yes, there are a number of names that need to be changed, but one would suggest that names change should not be done and implemented as a vengeance or at a manner that is revengeful given that in a democratic government, and in terms of Section 2 of the Constitution of South Africa, amongst others, we all have the rights to equality, human dignity; freedom and security of person; Freedom of expression; recognition. One may suggest that street names should be left as they are

in the old towns to preserve the history of this country; and that, instead, new street names be determined for new towns and suburbs. Name change must also start with places without names and were given descriptive names by the colonial and apartheid governments, e.g. Mamabolo’s Location or GaMamabolo are not names but two descriptive statements and words respectively that explain or point out where the location of Mamabolo is or a place of Mamabolo is without explaining or telling the real traditional name of that place; e.g. Legoleng or Leholene — implying a semi-desert area (part of which the Boers referred to as Uitval Grond). Another example will be “the now called Magoebaskloof” which is not a name but a kloof that is said to be of or belonging to Makgoba. The name of that place we know as Lekilela (a misty place of doom) and the first white people who came to the Woodbush Mountains referred to that escarpment as “the Valley of the Silver Mist.” Such words or statements pointing out to where some one person or people stay or assumed to belong to him/her and are regarded to be names should really be first considered for renaming or alteration. • To be continued next week

The difference between generic & branded drugs

Generic medicines versus branded. Where do we stand? And exactly what is a generic drug? Bulletin’s Yvonne Ndlovu asked dr David Dumusani Chauke, a well-known local general practitioner, to tell our readers more about the subject. We usually have no or little interest in medication knowledge. Our only interest is to buy the kind of medicine prescribed by our doctor, use them and have a willingness of getting well soon. Well, behind the hope of getting well the kind of medicine we are taking is either the generic drug or the branded drug. They are both medicine,s but have a slight difference in each different medication or drug category. The American Food and Drug Administration (FAD) consider generic drugs to be “identical, or bioequiva-

lent, to a brand name in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics and intended use.” In short a generic drug is simply a branded drug that uses a different name and packaging from that of its branded version. A branded drug on the other hand is an invented drug by a pharmaceutical manufacturer that obtains a patent to protect it for up to a certain period of time. A patent is an official right to be the only person to make, use or sell a product or an invention. This means that generic drugs cannot exist in that period of time because the innovator’s patent still exists. “Once the patent expires we see an influx of the generic medicines being produced in the market”, says local general practitioner dr David Chauke. Even after the patent has expired the branded drug doesn’t disappear. We can simply say the patent is there to protect the brand from other manufacturers or competitors manufacturing the same drug at that particular period. “When the patent for a particular branded drug expired, many generic products come into the market with a different name but same ingredients, which is the reason that makes the generic to be cheaper than its brand”, Chauke says.

He says the branded drug is expensive because it covers cost for research conducted for its invention, the cost incurred in ensuring it is safe, the cost of marketing and distribution. “The branded drug is very expensive compared to the generic product. The original manufacturer obtains the patented period to cover costs during research and all other things that are involved in the process of inventing the drug. “Even medical aid does not pay for the branded drugs while the generics exist,” he says. There are many generic drugs on the market these days. Even Panado has a generic “brother”. Amoxil has a generic “counterpart”, etcetera. Chauke confirms that generic drugs contain 100% active ingredients. The only difference can be found in the shape, colour and taste, called the inactive ingredients. Chauke confirms that occasionally patients who moved from branded to generic drugs complain that they didn’t do well on the generic product. “I am not sure what the cause could be, but I suspect it is re psychological, more than anything else. These patients normally complain about dizziness, vomiting and physical exhaustion,” he said. — Yvonne Ndlovu yvonne@bulletin.us.com

Consumers’ views on generics changing More than 50% of South Africans today would rather choose a generic over a brand name prescription drug according to IMS Health South Africa, a marketing research company to the healthcare sector. Paul Anley, CEO of SA’s fastest growing generics company, Pharma Dynamics, cites this as a clear indication that consumer perceptions of generics are changing for the better. “When one compares this to the results of a study conducted in 2008 where only 23% of SA consumers were in favour of generics, the most recent data is encouraging. “It shows that people no longer think of generics as inferior. They know that by choosing a generic they will receive the same treatment success as they would from a brand name medication. Generics have to meet rigorous MCC standards that are required to have the same identity, strength, quality, purity, efficacy and safety of its bigger name counterparts,” says Anley. He ascribes the increasing popularity of generics to the significant savings they offer consumers. “When a brand name medication comes off patent and generics are permitted to compete with that product, it does so by offering lower prices. Unlike the manufacturers of brand name drugs, generic medicine companies do not have significant expenses to recoup for advertising, marketing and promotion, or research and

development activities. “Generic medicine prices are, on average 50% cheaper than the brand name equivalents. Take the Singe Exit Price (SEP) of Norvasc (10 mg), a popular brand name cardiovascular drug for example, which is R196,93 (incl VAT), compared to the SEP of the generic equivalent, Amloc (10 mg) priced at R108,31 (incl VAT). This cost difference saves South Africans about R55 million per year.” He says rising prescription medicine costs remain a major challenge for consumers, especially older South Africans. “Worldwide the 65+ age group is expected to grow to over 1 billion by 2030. In SA this age group accounts for 6% of the total population and is increasing year on year. “Already the average 65 yearold South African on medical aid takes 2 – 7 medicines a day, which will only increase as they get older. When you’re on a chronic medication regimen such as this, the brand names can get very expensive, and generics are just as good.” Anley notes that the economic downturn has also played a major role in the upsurge for generic medications in recent years. “Consumers can no longer afford to pay for brand name medication. Even doctors say they are prescribing more generic products these days, not because they have to by law, but because patients insist on a cheaper generic alternative,” he says.

Be very cautious with your trust deposits (2) This week I will continue on giving more practical examples of trust deposits gone wrong, provided by Ann Bertelsman, Risk Manager, Attorneys Insurance Indemnity Fund. Case 3: The conveyancer attended to a transfer. The purchase price was R470 000 and the purchaser obtained a bond of R550 000. The conveyancing secretary paid the surplus of R80 000 over to the seller with the balance of the proceeds of the sale, mistakenly believing that it was due to the seller. Case 4: The conveyancer represented Mr W, the seller of an immovable property, as the transferring attorney. His firm also acted as the bond cancellation attorneys for A bank.

The seller alleges that the conveyancer wrongfully paid over to A bank, an additional amount in excess of the cancellation figures. It appears that this additional amount was related to an overdraft in the name of a cc and had nothing to do with the transfer. The conveyancer’s secretary had requested and received revised cancellation figures from the bank and had failed to notice that these were related to a completely different account number. 2. Payment to the seller/developer/estate agent/third party, before registration of transfer, without the written permission of the purchaser. Case 5: The conveyancer held a deposit of R500 000 in trust. The

estate agent wished to be paid R400 000 as partial payment of his commission, prior to transfer. Both seller and purchaser agreed to this. Thereafter the transaction was cancelled and the purchaser claimed the amount back from the conveyancer. There was no written agreement between the parties in this regard and the purchaser denied having agreed to the payment. Once again, and given the prevalence of these incorrect payments of trust money, everyone should take extra care when depositing or dealing with money in trust accounts. Wilmarie competes in the junior modified quad class and took part in only her second national race this year. She competes with a Yamaha hybrid quad and won the class.

Relapse prevention and motivation by Damian Jansen van Rensburg It is of utmost importance that a person participating in a physical training program implements strategies to prevent a relapse to less active or inactive state. Unexpected events, schedule changes, vacations and illnesses are but a few of the countless things that trigger such a relapse. A few simple ways to remain motivated and to prevent relapses are: THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SOCIAL SUPPORT NETWORK for exercise. This simply means to get family members and friends involved to some degree in the program. You have to be ASSERTIVE, the more assertive you are towards your

progress, concerns, accomplishments and struggles the more likely you are to achieve success. SELF REGULATION. The better you are at managing your own behaviours, schedules, time and priorities, the more likely you will be to follow a training program. Then lastly being able to manage HIGH RISK SITUATIONS, to be more prepared with program barriers and relapses. For info or to start training, contact Titanium Fitness on 079 892 6513 or titaniumfit@gmail.com. Next week: The ten principles of physical fitness

jean@bulletin.us.com

lopies gelê is.
