Hierdie sal in jou agterkop bly. Vanessa Leigh Luckhoff What use would more traffic cops be to us? Would just mean people would have to accept more bribes! That’s one of the major problems, and thus the cause of so many tragic accidents. All the negligent drivers that are caught prefer to pay a bribe and move on, until the day comes that they are responsible for the death of some innocent driver. P....s me off big time!!

GTM could face claims of millions of rands The Greater Tzaneen Municipality could be in for claims running into millions of rands, after this week’s disastrous veld fires in the Tzaneen area. The GTM’s alleged neglect of firebreaks and in some cases their reported refusal to make firebreaks have for the last couple of years been a bone of contention. From reports by the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) it has become clear that the GTM showed unwillingness to attend to or maintain firebreaks, or to make new firebreaks. It is alleged that this week’s huge fire that destroyed some 200 hectares of plantation and many more hectares of vegetation started on the GTM’s common at Adams Farm. The LFPA’s Spotter light aircraft (with Mr Siem Venter as the pilot) and the helicopter spent some sixteen hours in the air since Monday (until Wednesday morning). On Wednesday the situation was so serious that an extra helicopter was brought in from
Mbombela, as well as an extra Spotter from Bela-Bela. Firefighters from the Mopani District Municipality’s disaster team, Letaba’s Working on Fire team as well as firefighters from the Sekororo A and B teams and the Voorspoed DAFF teams worked almost non-stop since Monday. The MDM also brought in teams from Giyani and Phalaborwa. Some of them were still busy at Triangle and Deerpark on Wednesday afternoon. The extent of the damage caused this week is still to be calculated. Rumours that houses were destroyed in the fire are unfounded, although some narrow escapes have been reported. At the Tzaneen SPCA animals had to be moved in a hurry and some damage has been caused to kennels. The LFPA has issued yet another warning that land owners should make and maintain firebreaks.
Another rapist behind bars On Tuesday the High Court sentenced a 35 year-old suspect to 25 years imprisonment after being found guilty of the rape and murder of a five year-old girl. Leave Sekomane of Pharane in the Maake area was arrested in October 2010 after the mutilated body of the toddler had been found in the bushes. Sekomane and two accomplices were arrested. Intensive police investigations are underway to ensure that the two accomplishes will also be punished properly.
The news of the sentencing of Sekomane was welcomed by the family of the victim, as well as the Police’s provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Simon Mpembe. He expressed his appreciation for the sentence and praised the court. “Our detectives are doing all in their power to ensure that the courts can sentence criminals properly and we are pleased the justice system is playing its part.” — Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com

Greener pastures for farmers A seventy year-old retired nurse, Ms Jamela Mogodi, is one of the first successful farmers in Massmart’s Ezemvelo Direct Farm Programme. Her farming experience started when she joined the pilot project at Trichardtsdal in Limpopo — the first in Limpopo, aimed at helping small-scale farmers to move to greener pastures. The project is intended to help between thirty and fifty small-scale farmers to get going. The Ezemvelo programme is aimed at developing and expanding local sourcing capacity in fresh produce. It will work with farmers, especially smallholder farmers, to enhance their capacity through training and providing market linkages. It represents an investment of more than R15 million, which will be used for training, mentoring, technical assistance and establishing essential links to both finance and retail markets. The programme will source fresh produce from smallscale farms, to be supplied to some of the big retailer stores in the country. Statistics show that South African commercial farmers number just over 30 000, while smallholder farms range between one and two million. In support of these small farmers, Massmart plans to source 30% of their fresh produce by connecting 1 500 of them to stores by 2016. Mogodi grows spinach, green beans, butternut, toma-
toes, dry beans and green peppers on her family farm at Bordeaux. Her daughter, Ntswaki, manages the farm. They employ ten workers on a permanent basis and more people are employed during harvesting periods. Her fresh produce will be supplied to Cambridge Food and Game’s Foodco stores. So far she has received a tractor with a trailer, information on how to make her farm more efficient as well as irrigation pipes. Samuel Phasha (37) is another farmer benefiting from the Ezemvelo programme. He has been mining for the past eleven years and employs fourteen permanent staff. The number can go up to 39 during peak season. The department of agriculture assisted him by installing a pump house, two pumps and pump lines on the farm. Ms Tina Joemat-Pettersson the minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries emphasised the importance of quality produce. She also acknowledged the importance of commercial farmers and that their skills and expertise are needed. The three areas of intervention were identified as funding, skills and market access. —Beaunice Mnisi beaunice@bulletin.us.com

Ek was ‘n ooggetuie van my vriende se ongeluk.
Albei was dierbare vriende van my vir meer as twintig jaar. Daar was drie voertuie betrokke in die ongeluk.

‘GLM fails the constitution’ The DA has accused the Greater Letaba Municipality of disregarding the constitution and failing to use the budget to deliver services to the people. The DA took to the streets last week, demanding water, electricity and proper maintenance of roads in Modjadjiskloof. Presenting the memorandum, Mr
DA provincial leader Jacques Smalle is seen here presenting the memorandum outside the GLM’s offices in Modjadjiskloof to Mayor Godfrey Modjadji, on the left behind Smalle. BELOW: The march through part of the town’s CBD was disciplined, despite a couple of hundred people who Photos: Retha Nel joined in.
Jacques Smalle, DA provincial leader, said “the GLM receives an appropriate budget but fails to use it effectively. Every financial year the GLM receives sufficient budget and grants from the national and provincial government to use for service delivery for the communities
under their jurisdiction. However, this budget is not properly used to provide service of reasonable quality to local communities.” Smalle added that “the GLM fails to achieve these objectives and as such is infringing on the constitution of the residents.” The march was at-
tended by hundreds of DA supporters, mainly young people. Mr Godfrey Modjadji, the GLM mayor, who received the memorandum, hit back accusing the DA of being disingenuous and misleading the people. He said although his municipality has a low capacity it continues to provide
service delivery Modjadji said people who attended the march are not residents of GLM and their concern has nothing to do with the municipality as it relates to graves, which are located in the land belonging to traditional leaders. —Percy Mthombeni percy@bulletin.us.com
DA lays criminal charges against three senior GLM officials
Besoek ons webwerf by www.bulletin.us.com vir inligting oor sosiale geleenthede
The DA’s Limpopo leader, Mr Jacques Smalle, on Friday last week laid criminal charges (Case Number CAS 15/8/2012) at Modjadjiskloof Police against the former municipal manager, the chief financial officer and the technical director of the Greater Letaba Municipality, for contravening provisions of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). “It is alleged that these officials, at the very least recklessly, approved in 2011 a payment of R2, 5 million to a former employee of Star Mill Developers, a company that was contracted to construct roads and storm water infrastructure in Modjadjiskloof. “This payment was effected without proper checks, apparently when this employee had
merely made a claim to the GLM that the tender was theirs. The main contractor had failed to carry out its responsibilities under the tender agreement. Rather than these municipal officials demanding full performance by the contractor or the return of money already paid, they went ahead to approve payments to this disgruntled employee. “The police must now probe how a person who never had any contractual tender agreement with the GLM ended up being paid millions of rands,” Smalle said. To this day Modjadjiskloof still has undeveloped road and storm water infrastructure and yet millions have already been paid. The DA warn about the illegality of this transaction numerous times. Politiek of administrasie
The many veld fires that are raging about Tzaneen are truly a concern to one and all. One begs the question “Who or how they were started?” Was it due to some silly mistake or some carelessness or was it due to an “Act of God?” The latter is one of the most controversial statements ever. God does not act in this way unless there is a specific purpose for it. Yes, He brought floods and fire, destroyed nations, but, then He had a reason and this reason was to do away with the sinful nature of the people at the specific time. Now as I listen to the people fighting these fires and their dedication in their work, I know who is standing right beside each and everyone of them, I know He gave them the talents they have, the concern they have for others. They have no fear because He is always with them. Thus they are successful. In our spiritual lives someone or something also ignites a fire. However, we need to feed that fire, we need to control it and use it to the glory of God, otherwise like an uncontrolled veld fire it will destroy everything in its path. By getting directions from the Bible and help from others you will be able to help this fire to change your life for the better, you will, as the fire fighter’s also know that you are not alone, He is always at your side and the Holy Spirit, who is this fire will direct you and you will not be burnt. Blessings
Ook hier by ons in Mopani.
My ore is behoorlik rooi getrek daaroor.
Verdraagsaamheid broer, verdraagsaamheid.
What will it be: Tzaneng, Tzanana or will it stay Tzaneen? Part 4 Menno Klapwijk’s Findings Menno Klapwijk, an ethnologist, is one person who did justice to the history of Tzaneen and its origin. He is one of the pioneers of the Lowveld who came in this area in 1936. Klapwijk had been the owner and operated a company of earthworks and at the same time conducting an independent research of the history and the people of the former Letaba area, including Duiwelskloof, Tzaneen and Phalaborwa. From around1972 to 1974 Klapwijk conducted a research to determine the exact “… naming of Tzaneen, its origin and meaning and some historical facts concerning it.” (The story of Tzaneen’s Origin; 1974: P. ). He mentions in his book that “The earliest story I came across was given by Y. P. Kaplan, who in 1944 wrote in her BA Hons thesis : “Tzaneen – dit word waarskynlik afgelei van die Karanga-wortel: Dzana, wat beten: “om te dans” en mag dis ‘n plek gewees het waar die Naturelle gedans het”. Except for the meaning of the word “Dzana”one must mention from the onset that this ‘phenomenon’ is not far from the truth as the people from
It seems that the majority of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s councillors are favouring a name change for Tzaneen. Lekgolo Lazarus Ramalepe and Phetole David Mohubidu from Tzaneen say NO to a name change. They have researched the issue and we will present it over the next couple of weeks.
whom the name originated were regular singers, horn and flute blowers, drum beaters and dancers, particularly during the period of the year following the harvest and were enjoying the fruits of their sweat. His second findings was by “… the author of South African Place name Dictionary, P. J. Nienaber, came up with the identical explanation: “Dien naam kom waarskynlik van die Bantu word: Dzana (om the dans) en beteken plek waar gedans is.” Since the publication of the dictionary was in 1963, the explanation was possibly derived from the first source as they share the same meaning. Unless otherwise proven, the known standardized and applicable African word in ChiKalanga and ChiShona in Zimbabwe is Zana and the meaning of the word is the number:
One hundred (100). The third explanation was that “Tsaeene” means in Sotho: “Dirty water”, apparently meaning the Letaba River when it is in flood.” Note: The word Tsaeene above was possibly meant to be Tsanene. This meaning falls far from the traditional meaning of the Northern Sotho speaking people and may be referred to as what Klapwijk mentioned at the beginning of his book as “… vague impressions …” one may possess of facts (p. 1). The fourth generally acceptable explanation Klapwijk got was “that … Tzaneen was a Bantu basket called Tsana.” This explanation is not exactly what the actual origin and meaning of the name Tsanene or Tzaneen is. The fifth explanation that Klapwijk describes as nearest to the truth and derived from the writing of authors Bulpin and Mcdonald is that of the local tribesmen saying the neighbours referring to them “ … as baTsanene, (people who live in small villages).” p. 2). I concur with Klapwijk that this explanation is very close to the truth as would also be explained later. • To be continued next week

Women’s month celebrated
During the launch of the Women’s Network Safety campaign, Operation Basadi was launched and more than hundred police women took to the streets of N’wamitwa. In celebration of Women’s Month, the Limpopo SAPS launched the Women’s Network Safety Awareness Campaign at N’wamitwa Tribal Authority. The women in blue came in their numbers from all over Limpopo to celebrate women’s month and to raise awareness. The purpose of the event was to encourage police women to be proud of serving their communities and also to raise safety awareness in schools. The deputy provincial commissioner, Maj Genl Kedibone Moloko, encouraged the police women to serve their communities with pride and to prove that women can also protect and curb crime, through the support they get from community members. Moloko also urged community members to join hands with the police for a crime free community. During the campaign the police visited the N’wajaheni Primary Schools. The Tzaneen Cluster’s officer commanding, Maj Genl Maggy Mathebula, addressed the pupils about safety. She challenged the pupils in a protection board game, which teaches them how to protect themselves. She also encouraged the pupils to know their parents’ telephone
numbers for emergency purposes. The police handed out pamphlets to the pupils and protection games were given to the schools. Operation Basadi was also launched and more than hundred police women took to the streets of N’wamitwa. The police raided shebeens and put up road blocks in N’wamitwa, and 47 people were arrested. Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, Tzaneen Police spokesperson, said the operation will continue throughout the month, with police women leading the operation. — Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com

Coca-Cola supports local clubs and schools Powerade is a sports drink manufactured by The Coca-Cola Company, launched in the US in 1993. Powerade made its South African debut in 1995 and it is currently the number one sports drink in the country. It was specially developed by leading sports scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology as a drink for top-performing athletes. Proven time and again in performance and endurance trials, Powerade is an effective source of fluids, energy-yielding carbohydrates and electrolytes. Here’s why: Powerade contains water which lowers the risk of dehydration and cools the body. The carbohydrate sucrose, provides energy, which delays fatigue and aids recovery. Powerade also contains 3 powerful electrolytes, sodium, potassium and chloride, which maintains effective hydration by driving thirst as well as plays an integral roll in fluid and carbohydrate absorption which is imperative to rehydration. Powerade is available in a range of flavours: Jagged Ice, Naartjie, Island Burst, Orange and Mountain Blast. Pack formats include readyto-drink 500 ml and a concentrate 750 ml. Throughout the world, Powerade is associated with premier sporting events and ath-
Go bird walking with Eco Club The Tzaneen Eco Club will be visiting Hans Merensky Nature Reserve next Saturday. They will meet outside the gate at 06:30 for a guided bird walk with John Sewards from the Phalaborwa Bird Club. The walk will be conducted outside the reserve through bushveld and riverine habitat. The not-so-early birds can meet up with the group outside the gate at 08:30 for a drive through the reserve and picnic stop at a scenic spot. There is a small entrance fee payable at the gate. Non-members are welcome and will pay an additional R20. On the R71 towards Phalaborwa, after the Letsitele turn-off, turn left towards Eiland. Follow this road for approximately 30 km. letes. Powerade is the proud sponsor of the New Zealand, Australian, English and Irish rugby teams, amongst others, and is the official sports drink of the IRB Rugby World Cup, FIFA World Cup, Olympic Games and Vodacom Super 14. Bringing the support a little closer to home, Powerade is the proud sponsor of the Proteas, SA’s national cricket team. Bringing it even closer, Powerade is the proud sponsor of the Letaba Rugby Club, the Ebenezer Mile and is currently title owner of the Mountain to Mountain cycling race. Powerade stretches even further and supports school events and teams across the Letaba region. As part of this school’s support, Powerade sponsored the Merensky High School soccer teams with two complete kits as well as all the training equipment they will need to get their teams in top shape. This is part of the CocaCola Fortune Corporate Social Responsibility projects, giving back to the community.

Plasies’ girls too strong for Southern Cross The first girls’ cricket team of Merensky High School came up against Southern Cross in Hoedspruit on Saturday. The Plasies batted first and made scored 249 runs. Exceptional batting by Elmien Marais (110 runs) and her older sister, Hanrie (50), steered them to comfortable victory. Merensky lost only four wickets. Southern Cross could only manage 97 runs before they were all out. Kelsey-Ann Mostert claimed five wickets, helping the Plasies win by 152 runs. ‘n Rukkie later breek Koekemoer voor om die lynA few athletes of Tzaneen Marathon Club took part in the well known Shukuza half marathon on Saturday. 10 Principles of training by Damian Jansen van Rensburg Principle 3 – Strength Strength is the ability of a muscular unit or a combination of units to apply force. The more force that can be generated through these muscular units, which work through all the joints of the body, the more weight can be moved for a longer period of time. Strength can be improved through regular weight and core training with the correct techniques and progressions. This will also in turn increase metabolism, build lean muscle and also improve your over-
all aesthetic appeal. Strength training is important as it influences how you live your daily life through movements and activities that you do throughout the day, for example walking, running, picking up boxes, reaching for goods on shelves, carrying shopping bags, etc. To start a strength training program today, call a fitness professional of Titanium Fitness on 079 892 6513 or titaniumfit@gmail.com.

Gold medalists make us proud Retha Nel

The SA Rowing team, more specifically the men’s lightweight four, did not only make all South Africans very proud last week, especially the community of Tzaneen. The team won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, but what makes Tzaneeners so excited and proud is that they completed the last six weeks of their extensive training and preparation in the waters of the Tzaneen and Ebenezer dams. Ms Colleen Pirie of The Red Plate in Haenertsburg took care of their very specific requirements when it came to food. No oil was used, everything had to be roasted or steamed and they only ate low fat, low sugar foods. “They ate a lot and needed several meals during the day, as well as fruits, snacks and energy bars,” Pirie said. “Their cabins also had to be stocked with cereals, yogurt and cheese as they constantly had to have food. Each one had his own diet and were measured and weighed each morning and ate accordingly.” The food was very simple and basic homemade meals like roasted chicken with rosemary, baked potato with low fat cream cheese and roasted vegetables. “No seasoning,” she concluded. “The rowers added it themselves.” The team also made use of the facilities at the Tzaneen Health and Fitness Gym.
James Thompson, Mathew Brittain, John Smith and Lawrence Sizwe Ndlovu.
