Mooi so SA! Jackie Breed There were many! They all gave their heart and soul! Wonderful people! Dit laat my ongelooflik ’’humble’’ voel. Baie trots op elkeen van hulle. Haal my hoed af en salueer hulle. Scientists are still toying with the idea and several urban legends are making the rounds.

Of as die sypaadjies skoon gehou was nie. Of as. Of as. Of as…

Of byt blaffende honde nie!...

Police unhappy with us; we reply

On 24 August Bulletin carried a front page report about the new Police station in Letsitele and the almost bizarre situa-

Let us add some spice to the unfolding dra- e-mail since it was ma of the past eighteen months, looking in clear that you had

CONCERN ABOUT THE DAMNING ARTICLE WHICH APPEARED ON YOUR NEWSPAPER DATED 24 AUGUST 2012. 1. The management of police in Limpopo province have noted with grave concern the misleading reports which appeared in front page of our Bulletin Newspaper, headlined “Abandoned”, on 24 August 2012. 2. In your story you evoke the public’s emotions by misleading them into believing that the new Letsitele Police Station is a “multi-million police station and it is still standing empty”. You furthermore claim that you were sent from pillar to post when you made enquiries, but you failed to supply the public with the name of the person who “sent you from pillar to post”. 3. Our records indicate that only one inquiry was received from Bulletin in March 2011, and the reporter was directed to the National Head office of Police who are the custodian of the building in question. Your unbalanced story accuses SAPS Communication section of making empty promises about replying to your enquiries. Once again you failed to provide the public with the name of the communication officer(s) you spoke to. 4. What surprises us is that you remembered to state the name of the spokesperson of MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison Mr Molebatsi Masedi, while the SAPS spokespersons you claim to spoke to remain a mystery. We fail to understand which logic you were following when your publication approached the office of the MEC on matters concerning the Department of Police and the South African Police Service. 5. As if that was enough you went on to publish subjective thoughts about members struggling to work in a “dilapidated and too little offices”. Those comments were not attributed to any member of SAPS Letsitele, and that is a clear indication that no one was approached for comment. As a matter of fact this office has never received any complaint whatsoever from anybody associated with SAPS Letsitele. 6. You claimed to be on the ball by printing assumptions that there are problems with the tender and that the contractor did not do a proper job. You promised the the public you will continue seeking answers and this office now provides you with a status quo regarding the new

Letsitele police station, something which we would have done a long time ago had you contacted this office for developments on the site. 7. There are no problems with the tender, neither is there a hiccup with the contractor. The new Letsitele police station cannot be occupied now because it is still under construction. A complete building does not only consist of fully-built walls and a roof, but until the contractor hands over the building to the department and engineers are happy with the job done, construction will still continue. 8. To put the matter into perspective we want to give an insight to your publication that construction on site is still continuing. The building cannot be declared user-friendly as yet because there is no permanent electrical power on site. The Sewer Package Plant, which a basic need in any building, is still under construction and progress is running smoothly. In the SAPS we prioritise safety and one of the steel gates installed at one of the holding cells was made using steel of inferior quality. That prompted the constructor to remove the gate and order high quality steel gates for the safeguarding of the suspects. 9. Although there was a set date for the completion of the building, several factors contributed to the extension of construction period. Factors such as heavy rains, industrial mass actions and the late delivery of materials were encountered among others and that caused a slight delay in the completion of the project. 10. Now that you know the facts surrounding the new Letsitele police station, we hope that you will take the public out of their misery and practice fair and balanced reporting like you are mandated by the Press Ombudsman. 11. We hope the above is in order and looking forward to hearing from you and we will be able to answer to your questions for the benefit of the public. Yours in fair, balanced and researched reporting. You say, we say...

• Daar’s ‘n nuwe koffiewinkel by Sanloo Manor. • Liquor City maak ‘n nuwe mega-drankwinkel oop. • Tile Africa gaan ‘n nuwe teëlwinkel bou.

Show respect for activities at hospital Mediclinic places paramount importance on exercising patientsafety best practices in all its hospitals. With this in mind, Mediclinic Tzaneen has extended its level of care beyond the hospital’s walls by installing a boom gate system

at both its parking entrances — to augment the safety of patients and visitors on its property. The new system will act as a traffic calming measure to control the flow of vehicles through the hospital grounds. Parking at the hospital • Continued on page 8

• From p 3 published a report stating that the SAPS media centre in Pretoria is still mum regarding the Letsitele police station (copy thereof is available from our archives); 10. 10 On 18 January 2012 at 13:07 we sent Capt Dennis yet another e-mail, basically with the same enquiry, and we politely asked him for a reaction. After this exhausting chain of events we decided to let the matter rest for a while and we regularly followed up telephonically, until we decided to write what we hear from different sources — without further waisting our energy and money trying to get a response from SAPS. That is exactly why we decided to approach Mr Molebatsi-oa-Masedi of the department of safety and security in Limpopo — another move that clearly upset you and made you ask what sort of logic we displayed in doing so. We don’t think this remark of yours warrant comment, since our logic and your logic clearly date from different times and descend from different worlds. Be that as it may. Brig Muluadzi, I would have thought answering some of our enquiries could have be more productive, rather than your tirade. For example: • Why after seven years is the new Letsitele police station still unfinished? A town the size of Letsitele could be built in seven years, let alone a small police station! • What was the initial amount of the tender and what will the building cost amount to seven years down the road? • How many years/months/weeks will it still take to finish the relatively simple job? • What sort of logic do you practice when you state in your para 7 that “no problems with the tender, neither is there a hiccup with the contractor”, and then in your para 8 you state that “there is no permanent electrical power on site, the sewerage package plant… is still under construction, the steel gates installed at one of the holding cells was made using steel of inferior quality” etcetera? • How on earth do you justify your statement that certain problems caused a “slight delay”, when seven years have been spent on the project? • You say in your para 10 “now that you know the facts surrounding...” With due respect, Brigadier, what facts? Etcetera. Finally, we find your letter’s closing sentence — “Yours in fair, balanced and researched reporting” — melodramatic and somewhat uncalled for. Nevertheless, let us keep on striving for transparent, sincere, respectful and honest communication. Kind regards. Francois Aucamp Publisher — Bulletin

That dam(n) road!

Friday 14 September 2012

Ds Barry van der Merwe

We say, you say

Elsewhere in today’s edition we publish details about a most unfortunate slanging match between the SA Police Service and this newspaper. We have a clear conscience regarding our attitude towards the SAPS, since we have always been sympathetic towards the men and women in blue who protect us. We have many good friends in the SAPS and many who could confirm that we are not in any way hostile towards the SAPS. We thus experience the rather heated debate as painful. However, we are not prepared to take the underserved punches aimed at us by officials who in stead of practicing good and open relations with the media, can’t resist to forever accuse the media of being all sorts of bad things. Unfortunately this shortcoming in positive and constructive relations is endemic to most state organs. We often experience it in our efforts to communicate with local governments (as reported last week, with special reference to the GTM’s failure to respond to media enquiries). Hopefully we will in the course of time see an improvement in relations between the media and the public sector — since it is crucially necessary.

NG Kerk Letsitele

Claude Wheatley Street in Tzaneen is in a terrible mess... After construction started to re-build this busy and important road (especially for the heavy taxi traffic flow), it has been stopped by the High Court that found the tender awarding process was highly irregular. The excavations (and no outlets for water) have caused the road to become a dam when it rains, and after last week’s rain motorists could hardly use the road. In the mean time businesses in the Star Spares shopping complex have practically been cut off the “outside” world. What a shame!

Complaint Laurette van den Heever, De Hoek Sectikon, Woodbush, writes: I would hereby like to lodge a formal complaint against Mr Pierre van den Heever (the GTM’s director of the electrical engineering department). Regarding the background of my situation. I live on the Debegeni road, at the top of the mountain. There are a hand full of people living up there, and we are by far not the most remote houses in the area. Two years ago when we moved up there, we did not have power for the most of December. I honestly think that any normal person would get upset if they do not have power for that length of time. In the beginning, when reporting the frequent power outages, I did get very upset with the people working at the power station and at times I was out of line. Now, however if you ask Storm or Carol about my conduct when reporting the outages I am resigned and calm. During the time when our power was off for so long, I phoned Pierre on his cellphone. He did not

Letters • Briewe answer his phone. His wife however did, and I asked her to give him a message. I was upset, but I did not scream at her and I did not swear at her. Last year we had far less power problems than the year before, why I do not know. Last night at about 8 pm our power went off. I reported it to the power station, I was not rude or miserable to anybody, I just reported it. This morning at about 5:30 am the people at the power station phoned me to ask if the power was back on, I said no, that we are still in pitch darkness, again I was not rude to the person who phoned me, I even made a joke with Storm yesterday about the power that was off. After 9 am this morning a tried phoning the power station to find out if the power on the mountain had been restored, but couldn’t get hold of them. Assuming that they were just very busy, I phoned the Municipality and spoke to Karen Biewenga and asked her if she knew whether our power had been reconnected and she said that she would contact the power station

and ask them to get back to me. I asked Karen if she knew what their plans were to avoid a disaster, since the rainy season has only just started and we are already having problems .She politely suggested that I speak to Pierre van den Heever. When Pierre answered his phone I asked how he was doing and also what the plans were to ensure that we would not have continuous power outages this rainy season. He then immediately started attacking me. He told me that I am not the only person with a problem and that I should rather move to town, as then I will not have any problems with the electricity. I said to him that he is discriminating against all of us staying outside of town. He got very upset with me, and told me that I must complain to God for sending us rain and making the plants grow. I said but there are a lot of people in other parts of South Africa where they also have overhead power lines, but they do not have half the problems we have. He said they do not have the problems we have with plants growing into the lines and roads not being acces-

Mooi naweek!

sible with anything else than 4x4’s and so on. I got upset, but kept calm and asked him whether everybody out of town then should move into town just to make his life easier. He then went on by saying that people should stop complaining about everything and just accept the situation for what it is. My only reason for phoning this morning was to find out if they have a plan to avoid upsetting the people living outside of town with frequent power outages during the rainy season. The only response however I got was a very rude and unpleasant response telling me in not so many words not to make my problems his and refer my query to God. • We asked Mr Van den Heever for his comments. He explained to us that in his 22 years with the GTM he has tried his level best to accommodate all residents when they encounter problems. He said he is not prepared to become part of a mud slinging match in the media and Ms Van den Heever is welcome to visit him for a discussion. “I take note of Ms Van den Heever’s complaint. It is not my desire to respond in kind to her letter. I am, however, comfortable that those who know my reputation in the community and me personally will be able to judge her claims and outbursts in terms of her reputaion,” he told Bulletin. — Editor

What will it be: Tzaneng, Tzanana or will it stay Tzaneen? Part 4 • Continued from last week Therefore, the explanation of ‘... small villages’ almost apply when the word ‘small’ is omitted, as the place was a place with ‘many villages’ or ‘hundreds and hundreds of household families that formed into villages’; that is, small and large villages.

Therefore, Tzaneen (derived from Tsanene) is a word that describes and represents a residential place or land space where there is a large concentration of people in their hundreds. The reason for the concentration of people in the Tsanene area is that they inherited a fertile, rich part of the Lowveld Mopani District with, amongst other things, a number of perennial rivers, streams, wells, densely populated vegetation, valleys, hills, mountains, escarpment, fertile soil, good rainfall and moderate seasonal weather that made them happy people in “A Happy Land.” However, the word ‘motse’ emanates from the Northern Sotho word ‘tsema’, meaning: sod turning (go tsema motes). The word tsema is derived from a ChiKaranga or ChiShona word “dzimika or kudzimika.” Motse is a concentrated number of houses and households, mostly and very often in their ten’s and hundreds. An open basket we call ‘Tshaana’ carries much more than one hundred of mabele (broken maize or maize seed), makhaha or marôrô (sorgum seed), et cetera – making it to be named Tsahaana – a plated wood made round basin or vessel which carries hundreds of maize seed or sorgum seed and several other type of food. Therefore, the key word for Tzaneen here, is the number ‘One hundred’ in its multiple or plural form. Grammatical version of the word Tsanene As explained above the word Tsanene refers to the place name of the people of the BaTsanene with their Northern Sotho dialect called Khetsanene. Now, let us break down these three words, one by one, grammatically. In the first instance, the word Tsanene is a Sothowise name derived from a ChiKaranga or ChiShona word ‘Zana’. The word Tsanene is preceded by the root prefix Tsa- that is extended by the suffix –nene which in KheTsanene (part of Nothern Sotho dia-

It seems that the majority of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s councillors are favouring a name change for Tzaneen. Lekgolo Lazarus Ramalepe and Phetole David Mohubidu from Tzaneen say NO to a name change. They have researched the issue and we will present it over the next couple of weeks.

lects) implies and carries the textual connotation of place or a place. Hence, Tsanene becomes the name of a place. In the second instance, BaTsanene is a word preceded by the prefix of Ba- representing Batho (meaning people or the people), followed by the root prefix Tsa- (emanating from Zana) and ending by the suffix –nene which implies or carries the textual connotation of place or the place. Hence, the people of Tsanene. In the third instance, the word KheTsanene, is preceded by the prefix Khe- representing a thing or the thing or something, and in this context representing the thing, language; followed by the root prefix Tsa- and the suffix representing or carrying the textual connotation of a place –nene. Hence, KheTsanene. In outlining the spelling and meaning of Tzaneng (Tsanene) Mr. Menno Klapwijk cites as follows: “Dr. N. J. van Warmelo the past Director of the Ethnological Department of the Bantu Education said that the ending ‘ng’ in Northern Sotho becomes ‘ne’ in the Letaba District. Thus Tsaneng is written and pronounced as Tsanene.” (p. 13). Therefore the issue of Tzaneng or Tzanana is not relevant and applicable than the word name Tzanene. Prefixation of the word Tzaneen by Altenroxel Altenroxel pronounced the name Tsanene as “Tzanin.” Therefore, the name Tzaneen is a corruption of the name Tsanene. The structuring of the word name Tzaneen by Mr. Henrich Schulte Altenroxel in and since 1892 was not meant to displace or misplace the well being of the communities Tsanene in the present Lowveld Mopani District. The naming was done in good faith as he did not come completely with a new name from Germany or Europe. It was because of his

German background that he spelled the word as Tzaneen using the prefix ‘Tza’. Considering that by 1890s we did not have any written Northern Sotho language until the latter half of the 19th century, Altenroxel, nevertheless strived to spell the name as he understood it and retained its concept. Except that Altenroxel moved the letter ‘e’ at the end of the word Tsanene and placed it just before the last letter ‘n’ to make it Tzaneen, the word Tzaneen still is and tantamount to Tsanene. Therefore the use of the prefix ‘Tza” should not be an issue it is as much as the use of ‘Tsa’ today by the Northern Sotho written language users and by the Shangaan- Tsonga people of the Lowveld Mopani District, and as it is the use of ‘Ts’ as applied by the Swiss or natives or nationals of Switzerland. So, the word Tzaneen is much more accommodative and usual to the people of this area and the travelers from with and outside South Africa. The use of the prefix ‘za’ and prefix ‘dza’ by the Zimbabwean nationals of ChiKaranga and ChiShona or ChiVenda in Zimbabwe and South Africa, the Shangaan-Tsonga and other tribes in the Lowveld Mopani District and elsewhere in Limpopo Province is quite acceptable as we, to a large extend share common backgrounds, similarity of languages and culture as BaKgalaka, BaKone and BaRoka. Today Tzaneen has, in terms of Handbook on Geographical Names, 2002, become a standardized name as a symbol of unity as it embraces connotations of diversity and neutrality in its pronunciation, structure and its nature relating to affirmation of South Africa’s history, “and national identity, and for purposes such as trade and commerce, transportation, communications, regional and environmental planning, social services, science and technology, elections and censuses, tourism, disaster management and search-and-operations, etc.” The name Tzaneen is suitable and fits well at all levels, including local, district, provincial, national and international level – it is easy to pronounce, spell, write and easy to remember – it is a blend of the Lowveld Mopani District economic and social welfare, security and interests.

Life is a matter of choices The annual Cancer.vive charity ride is geared at educating and raising awareness on the “shy” cancers in rural communities and small towns. It’s a little known fact that globally, more people die from cancer than HIV, TB and malaria combined. Not all cancers can be prevented, but healthy lifestyle choices and early detection are key in lowering the risk. Thirty per cent of all cancers can be prevented and treated if detected early. A Tzaneen woman, Ms Marina Prinsloo, will go on this charity ride. She told us her life story...

“Life is full of choices. Make the best of your circumstances. Be yourself and never lose hope. You have the opportunity to create an outcome for your life that’s your choice.” When I look back on my life I realize that life is full of choices. I have decided to walk with God and to live with cancer with the strength He gives me. I started to practice the power of positive thinking and realised that God had another plan for my life. I was born with a split pallet and cleft lip. My childhood was not easy: I was often the butt of jokes and sometimes sympathetic stares. At the same time, I was lucky enough to have parents who, despite having financial difficulties always found a way to pay for reconstruction surgery in an attempt to make life a little easier. I had a few of these opera-

tions as a child, but needed more as an adult. At that stage I had no idea that the hardships and difficulties as a child would mould me into the strong, independent woman I have become: who found the courage and the will to fights the challenges of having cancer. I lived a healthy lifestyle and single handedly raised my three daughters. In 1994 I met Schalk and married him in 1998. He had two sons and with my three daughters we have been blessed with five wonderful children. I am also the proud grandmother of three grandchildren. In June 2006 I had my first mammogram and the doctor told me that I had only one

milk gland in the left breast. He assured me that it was nothing to worry about, and he told me to come back for my next mammogram after two years. During 2007 things became too much for me. My husband worked abroad, while the eldest daughter and her husband moved to Dubai — a mere month after my middle daughter, her husband and their daughter had immigrated to New Zealand. All of this happened within three months and I felt I couldn’t cope. I cried non-stop for many months. I had no history of breast cancer in my family and never noticed the red lights. If I knew what I know today, I would have done regular self examinations and would have picked up my breast cancer earlier. It was in October 2008 while relaxing in the bath that I realized that my left breast was red and inflamed. I went for three biopsies. Two of them were done without the support of my husband who was still abroad. He arrived in the country two days before my third biopsy. I was informed that the results would be available later and for six weeks I waited for the results. Eventually the doctor called and told me that the lump in my breast was lobular Cardamom and that I have (HER 2) breast cancer. This was exactly one month before my 49th birthday. A few days later I had a bilateral mastecto-

my. I lost all my lymph nodes under my left arm and six under my right. My life changed dramatically. I was literally brought to my knees. By the Grace of God I had never felt like it was the end of the road for me. I started with chemo; eighteen sessions from January to August 2009! After that, I was placed on a five year Tamoxifen treatment with lots of side effects. I’m still on this treatment. After the mastectomy I felt as if I had lost my womanhood. I was traumatized and it filtered into every aspect of my life. My relationships were also tested. I decided to go the breast reconstruction way — for myself and my marriage. In April 2010 I went for the implant of breast expanders, to stretch the skin for silicon prostheses. Over an eleven months period the doctor injected sterile water every second week till my skin had stretched enough for the silicon prostheses to be implanted. In March 2011 the expanders were removed and the silicon prostheses were put into position. What an awesome moment when I could wear normal clothes again! I realised that I need to take it day by day and to stay positive. In January this year I went for a follow up CT scan. A spot was found on my liver. I followed it up with a MRI scan and on 8 March I underwent a liver biopsy. The diagnosis was lesion in the liver — hemangioma adjacent to the gall bladder in the liver. I now need to go for regular scans and follow ups. After all my endeavors I have come to a conclusion: Can I make a difference in other peoples’ lives? Yes! Most certainly! People need us, me, — all Cancervice survivors. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you have. What matters are your actions. Your integrity, mercy, courage and the sacrifice towards your fellow men, to encourage and educate them. “Hope is as essential to your life as air and water. You need hope to cope. Hope comes from having a purpose” — Rick Warren.

Samwu warns the MDM The SA municipal workers union (Samwu) has threatened to make the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) ungovernable. The union accused the executive mayor and senior officials of corruption and being uncaring. This follows the union’s unsuccessful march last week. Mr Steven Mashabane, branch chairperson, says “the mayor refused to come out and collect the memorandum.“ “We are very disappointed that he is a coward, he can’t stand workers and does not address the issues that needs his attention. He runs away and this shows that he can’t lead instead he sends other people“ Mashabane said they didn’t submit the memorandum and they are planning to organise the mother of all strikes to make the MDM ungovernable, until their demands are met. He refused to discuss the details of the memorandum, but told the Bulletin that they are concerned of the growing corruption in the MDM. He cited the disappearance of funds without accountability and appointment of people without proper qualifications as major issues. Mr Neil Shikwambana, the MDM spokesperson, refuted the union’s claim as ‘’pure lies’’, saying • Continued on page 15

Limpopo launches tourism month in style The Limpopo Tourism Agency launched the tourism month campaign in one of the jewels of Limpopo, the Kruger National Park (KNP). This year’s aim is to encourage South Africans to travel their own country. Members of the LTA board, LEDET, SANParks and the media were some of the people chosen to witness the launch. The group arrived at the Phalaborwa gate of the KNP where they were briefed on the day’s events. The shuttles then transported the groups to Letaba Camp viewing Elephant, Buffalo, Giraffe and Zebra along the way. Mr Ben van Eeden, the regional general manager, Nxanatseni region of the KNP, took the groups to the Giriyondo boarder post which was officially opened in 2006. Giriyondo is a 95 km drive from the Phalaborwa gate and was set up to allow travellers to roam from the KNP to Mozambique’s Limpopo national Park and vice versa, oncondition that they stay over one night. Van Eeden said there has been a 25% increase in occupancy in accommodation since the implementation of the one night condition. The media were taken to the Amarula Lapa in Phalaborwa to learn how the drink is

made. The plant can produce up to 1,4 million litres of marula pulp. This is made possible by the community in and around Phalaborwa which harvests the fruit. The fruit is weighed and the people who harvested the fruit are paid. Locals can look forward to many more tourism events during this month. The highlight will be national tourism day on 27 September. —Beaunice Mnisi

Limpopo young inventor is dreaming big A new technologically advanced home theatre system that Nhlanhla Harvey Baloyi of Malamulele designed could take the listening experience to another level. The slick, white digital sound system called “The Drum,” is a complete digital device with a docking system designed to look like an African drum, which he plans to launch soon. Nhlanhla (22) is one of twelve finalists for the Hansa Pilsener “Next Beeg Dreamer” competi-

tion, aimed at rewarding four finalists with great ideas with bursaries to continue their inventions at the institutions of their choice. In the competition people over the age of 18 to 29 were allowed to unleash their entrepreneurial minds by entering into one of four categories, namely Music, Hansa, Community, and Home. With his innovative idea, peop-le could enjoy and celebrate the unique sound produced through the integration of traditional sound and technology. The winners will be announced on 14 & 15 September. - Orlando Chauke

Your blood is needed it would be your own or that of your loved ones that is in need of this. This is why donors are urged to become regular donors, with a minimum of four donations per year. The SA National Blood Service asked donors to commit to donating at least two times over the next four months, so as to avoid any possible shortages that are traditionally experienced from hereon.

Not only is September a month of celebrating the birth of new life, after a long and dreary winter, it is also a month that all South Africans acknowledge and celebrate their heritage. Along with our strong heritage we have much to be proud of, shown in many ways; amongst them the pride of knowing you make a difference to the lives of those in need.

To be a blood donor you need to: • Be between the ages of 16 and 65 • Weigh more than 50 kgs • Be in good health • Lead a sexually safe lifestyle

As a blood donor, you play an important role in saving lives. Your one blood donation can save up to three lives, and you may never know when

Joubert & May Attorneys in Tzaneen recently came second overall in pmr.africa’s Golden Arrow 2012. According to the provincial survey on leaders and achievers in their respective fields, Joubert & May was rated as excellent and received an overall second place in the legal firms category. This survey looks at companies and institutions that did the most in their sectors over the past twelve months to stimulate economic growth and development in the Limpopo province. Holding their award is Ms Desiré-Lee Mostert and Mr Johan Jacobsz. Photo: Retha Nel

Ms Mary Scheepers, a pioneer of the Politsi Valley, passed away last Thursday at the age of 91. A memorial tea will be held on the farm Bergendal at George and Dawn Altona’s home on Tuesday, 18 September, 15:00. For further information contact Garreth 082 804 6773 or Inge 072 866 5883.

Don’t miss the Tzn Eco Club’s exciting talk The Tzaneen Eco Club will be hosting Dalena Mostert, a passionate birder and photographer, at the Macadamia Community Centre on Thursday at 19:00. She will talk about her recent birding trip to Mozambique and Zimbabwe and show off some of her stunning photos. Mostert grew up in the Karoo. Her father loved nature and taught his family about the veld, the animals and birds. In 1990 she became extremely ill and suffered from posttraumatic depression. She started birding as a therapy, and never stopped! It became such a passion that she joined Birdingpal, started digiscoping, and in 2006 became serious about bird photography. She works at Westfalia in the field of intellectual property and has many other hobbies including reading, handicraft, astronomy and gardening. Visitors are always welcome and pay a small fee of R20. Contact Marianne McKenzie 082 835 4185 for more information.

“Ons is hoofsaaklik ‘n • Continued from page 8 boerderygemeenskap en the march was illegal. “To even assert that the Mayor refused to ac- reën is altyd welkom. gereelde reën en dit maak dit moeilik om ‘n nuwe datum te kies.

10 Principles of training by Damian Jansen van Rensburg Principle 8 – Agility Agility is the ability to efficiently change direction and/or position of the body quickly while under control. It requires an individual to possess adequate strength, power, balance and body control. Agility training helps you to discipline your body as you will become more aware of and be able to move your body better in predetermined movements. It can also improve flexibility as well as increase your core and functional strength.

Apart from developing your speed you also develop your intellectual skills as well as motor skills. A simple yet effective agility drill, for example, is skipping. It can be used as a warm up before your actual training session which makes it the easiest drill to incorporate into your training regime.
