6 Legal eagles’ Local lawyers wings clipped struck from the roll “Flyeth no more, oh ye of winged persuasion, for thine freedom has been lost in the mists of thine mysterious law...”

Six Tzaneen lawyers have been struck off the roll or have been suspended by the Law Society for a variety of misdemeanors between October last year and this week. On 21 October 2011 Mr Mpho Samuel Maake was struck off the roll, on 11 November Mr Morape Samuel Maanaso was struck off the roll and on the same day Mr Stanley Malatji was suspended. On 25 November 2011 Ms Rachel Freda Sonntag was struck off the roll, and on 2 February this year Mr Ngwako Petrus Malatji

was suspended. The latest casualty is Mr Gerard Charles Maritz who was struck off the roll on 11 May. In the meantime an ongoing investigation into the affairs of Mr Chris Mahowa of Tzaneen is said to be nearing its end, but no confirmation could be obtained from the Law Society before our deadline. In another development a number of people convened in Tzaneen on Wednesday to discuss combining their efforts to lodge complaints with Law Society against yet another

prominent Tzaneen attorney, and to ask the Law Society to envestigate his financial affairs. The matter is in a sensitive stage, therefore no names will be mentioned. Besides lawyers in Tzaneen being under the microscope, a number of problems with estate agents in Tzaneen are being investigated by the EAAB (the board regulating estate agents). A number of alleged serious irregularities in a Tzaneen agent’s financial affairs caused “investors” to go into panic mode this week. • Read more about it on page 3

Susan Ettmayr Shop trolleys are rented in Germany. You slot in a Euro, get your trolley, and when you bring the trolley back, the automat gives you your Euro back. Marius Hattingh Skep ‘n werksgeleentheid.

Vlieg is nie so seker nie!

Limpopo’s department of roads and transport has put the project to widen the road from Nkowankowa to Burgersdorp to four lanes, on hold due to lack of funds. • Disaster Centre The second phase of the roads project, upgrading the road linking Nkowankowa with Tzaneen, has also been put on hold, for the very same reason.

— Elsie Degenaar

Agent in groot knyp

— Francois Aucamp francois@bulletin.us.com

Chief Mamaila murdered

The community of Maphalle village is mourning the death of their Chief, who was shot and killed at a community event in the village (close to the Maphalle Clinic) on Saturday. According to Tzaneen Police Cluster spokesman, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the deceased Chief Malekutu Edward Mamaila was attending an event at the village, during which he called a person to talk to him. Ngoepe said that while they were talking another person approached them and attacked the person the chief was busy talking to.

Mamaila tried to intervene and the suspect took out a firearm and shot the Chief in the chest. The Chief was taken to the Maphalle Clinic and pronounced dead upon arrival. The Tzaneen Police Cluster commander, Maj Genl Maggy Mathebula, appointed a task team “to follow up on this case and to put the culprits behind bars”. Ngoepe urged the community to contact Col Johanna Manyela on 082 565 8458 for any information in connection with the murder of Mamaila. —Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com

The Tzaneen Police launched a manhunt for a criminal identified as William Shumba (also known as Givemore) from Zimbabwe. This man is directly connected to a house burgalary that occurred at a house on Graystone farm outside Tzaneen last month. According to Tzaneen Police Cluster spokesman, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the bugalary took place after the owner of the house had left for Gauteng for a short holiday — leaving the farm in the care of Shumba. Anyone knowing where Shumba could be should contact the nearest police station or the investigating officer, Capt Samuel Ndlovu, on 015 306 2000 or 082 319 9662 — or Col James Espach on 082 451 7169 Meanwhile, the police arrested 87 people for different criminal offences. During the weekend 27 people were arrested for drinking in public. Tzaneen police station’s communication offi-

cer, Const David Seale, said that drinking in public in the area is becoming a serious problem, but the police are working on it. Thirteen people were also arrested for possession of counterfeit goods, six for shoplifting, two for possession of dagga, six for loitering, one for common robbery and two for housebreaking and theft. Seale urged community members to support the police in fighting crime and to report any knowledge of criminals in their areas. — Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com

The Message

Vrydag 05 Oktober 2012

We tender sincere apologies to our readers for not being able to present the usual spiritual message today. We trust that our contributor will be able to supply a message for the next time round.

In elk kas is daar ‘n vrot appel, soms meer.

World Mental Health Day is not about a small matter Next week World Mental Health Day will be celebrated. What is it all about? Life is full of emotional ups and downs and everyone experiences the blues from time to time. But when the down times seem to last for a long time or interfere with your ability to function at home or at work, you may be experiencing depression. Anxiety is another mental illness that can affect your quality of life and may involve the experience of panic attacks. Symptoms of depression include a persistent sad or empty mood, feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt and selfreproach, decreased energy, suicidal thoughts, restlessness, hostility, difficulty concentrating/remembering and making decisions. People with anxiety are constantly being apprehensive or on edge, avoid certain places or situations due to anxiety, have a sense of imminent danger, are restless and battle to concentrate.

They also may experience short periods of intense fear coupled with a racing heartbeat, nausea, sweating or dizziness. A support group leader, Ms Colleen Phillips says: “The stigma surrounding mental illness often stops people from sharing their experiences with others, but this leads to isolation and it’s more difficult trying to cope with everything on your own. Support groups provide people with a safe, confidential environment where you can connect with others going through similar experiences and challenges.” To join a group, call Phillips on 083 415 5137 or contact the SA Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) on 0800 21 22 23. Research shows that support groups effectively help people cope with and recover from a wide variety of problems. “Participating in a support group often means reduced hospitalisation, improved coping skills, better compliance to treatment and improved daily functioning,” says psychia-

trist dr Frans Korb. Support groups help people deal with a mental illness diagnosis in a well-adjusted, healthy way. They provide information on the illness and ways to treat and manage it, as well as help give patients and loved ones time to adjust. The Tzaneen Depression and Anxiety Support Group is one of many run by SADAG — a non-profit organisation (NPO) striving to educate patients, families, mental health professionals and the general public on the nature and management of mental illnesses. The NPO also aims to eliminate the discrimination and stigma that surround mental illness, as well as to increase access to high-quality care for all South Africans. For more information about depression and anxiety, video clips, as well as local and international articles on mental health issues, visit www.sadag.org.

Use your vote DA Councillor Luke Perkins, GTM, writes by e-mail: Thank you for publishing my letter regarding the non-functioning public swimming pool. In your reply, you suggest I should have the answers to this rather than the questions. However, I am in opposition, not in the ruling party - they should have the answers. I have also submitted formal questions to Council on this matter; we meet again in late October. This is the same approach I followed when querying the non-functioning fountain outside the municipality - taking the matter to the Press as well as the Council. The fountain has since been fixed and operating for several months now; perhaps the same might happen to our swimming pool? Just to remind your readers, there are 5 DA Councillors out of 68 in total. It is difficult under these circumstances to get issues addressed, and particularly, as your paper has pointed out, with the ongoing chaos surrounding the positions of municipal manager and various directors. The only way we can get this sorted out is for people to vote DA en masse; to get rid of this appallingly lazy administration and to get people’s rands working for them again. • We would like to think that you’ve misread (misunderstood) our footnote to your letter. We actually sympathised with you and referred to

Letters • Briewe the sad state of affairs — Editor

Better judgement please Ras le Bol writes by e-mail: I have for some time been marvelling at the quirky and idiosyncratic approach taken by yourself in the laudable sphere of public reporting. Not for

you the time-honored tradition of objectivity underpinning a machinery of incisive and critical reportage. Instead we are treated to the snippy and unconsidered interruptions of a child who has not been slapped down enough (metaphorically of course), for constantly speaking out of turn. Or the unaskedfor adulation of public Servants (see previous MM) whose performances merit none of the glory you so happily heap upon them. The snide little remark in last week’s letters page broke the camel’s back. I do not know the individuals concerned, apart from reading their letters from time to time. They seem to me well-meaning individuals who have the frustrating and thankless task of trying to keep an arrogant, inept and overwhelming majority to some kind of accountability. They also keep the general public informed, something which the public Servants of the ruling party would never deign to do (batho pele, indeed!) In a proper democracy, Sir, that is what happens. So I appeal to your better judgement to stop using the paper in general, and the letters columnn particular, as your own personal facebook page with constant commentary and little thumbs-up or-down. • We offer our humble apologies, and bow to your superior knowledge as well as your illuminating and perspicacious insights. By the way: Is this your real name and do you have an address that is not suspiciously and safely hidden somewhere in cyber space? — Editor

Beware of that very shiny new packaging! There’s a certain time each year when it seems like every second product has new packaging. A lot of times it revives the product’s popularity for a while but this change may have another purpose — pack shrinkage. By no means a new trend, the high frequency of occurrence has put pack shrinkage firmly under the magnifying glass. Pack shrinkage is when a product’s volume or size is decreased along with its packaging being changed. The product is usually advertised by drawing attention to a new improved feature of the packing and not noting that the size has changed. Examples of pack shrinkage are the 340 ml cooldrink cans that changed to a new shape a few years back and currently only hold 330 ml. Cadbury’s chocolate slabs also shrunk from 100 g and 200 g to 90 g and 180 g and in recent months they have put a big emphasis on their new packing that is easy to open and reseal. All Gold tomato sauce went from being

750 ml a bottle to 700 ml and Colgate toothpaste changed from 100 ml to 75 ml per tube. It is thought that companies are reducing the size of the packaging rather than raise the prices any more than necessary. Because of inflation and the financial trouble the global economy is facing consumers are no longer as loyal to brands as they were, instead choosing cheaper alternatives to help cut costs. Pack shrinkage is then a perfect way to keep consume r s buying their favourite brands and adding interesting new packaging to grab the attention of new consumers. Consum e r s

should take care when buying that shiny new product. Don’t be fooled by a pretty new wrapper, check the back of the packaging and compare which of similar products really represent the best value for money. — Retha Nel retha@bulletin.us.com

The Van Velden Hospital in Tzaneen received a brand new sign board, detaling all the services available at the facility. It was sponsored by Vixtrix Signs. Hospitals around the country are currently busy upgrading to meet the criteria necessary to get accreditation for the planned National Health Insurance. A board identifying the services available is necessary to get a good rating. It is also part of the Department of Health’s plan to improve accessibility of information for people who need to use hospital services. “Patients can now see which services we render, which will ultimately enhance those same services,” said dr Chukwudi Omile, the clinical manager. Messrs Martin Froise (Vixtrix signs) and Thinus Visser (vice-chairman of Van Velden management board) are seen here with drs Omile and Ellen Madike (CEO of Van Velden Hospital).

So sê AgriSA in ‘n verklaring.

Support group can help you The Tzaneen Depression and Anxiety Support Group will be holding a special World Mental Health Day meeting on Wednesday (10 October), at the Macadamia Village Community Centre in Tzaneen. Guest speaker Dr Jean Railton will be discussing mental health issues, answering attendees’ questions, including those related to the symptoms and treatment of mental illness, and giving self-help tips. Life is full of emotional ups and downs and everyone experiences the blues from time to time. But when the down times seem to last for a long time or interfere with your ability to function normally, you may be experiencing depression. • Read more on p 6

Haar eggenoot, mnr Johan Visser, is reeds in 1990 oorlede.

Long court battle looms re Shangaan kingship

His last salute Mr Mike Eells, a resident of Tzaneen, passed away recently. He was a retired policeman from England who spent his days helping out his friends. Eells was part of the bow club in Tzaneen. He is deeply mourned by his sons, Andrew and David, as well as family and friends. His memorial service was held at the AFM Church Tzaneen.

New book launched Another book on the history of our area, this time on Haenertsburg, has been published. It is a companion to the popular Footprints – on the trail of those who shaped Tzaneen’s history and is by the same author, David Hilton-Barber. The Tzaneen book has been sold out and another edition will soon go to press. Anyone who wishes to provide information on early settlers of the greater Tzaneen area should contact hiltonbarber@tzaneen.co.za. An edited version of the first book has now been recorded on a set of CD’s. This audio book, read by the author, will be available shortly.

ship, there’s undisputable evidence that Nghunghunyani was a king of all Xitsonga speakers. “Those that claim that Nghunghunyani was a king in Mozambique are mistaken. His warriors fought in wars all over the northern part of South Africa, including the eastern part of Zimbabwe where you find the va-Shona tribe,” he said. Speaking at the event, minister Richard Baloyi said his department took a decision to recognise traditional leaders that seek to unite communities. He added that the government was aware of the “wrongs and distortions” of the past, when chiefs crowned traditional leaders who were not descendants of royal families. “This has left other traditional leaders without their chieftaincies, while others got what did not belong to them. We’ve therefore taken a decision as government to correct that mistake,” he said referring to the commission established to look into traditional leaders’ affairs. — Orlando Chauke

The fight about who is the king of the Shangaan people is getting more intense, as four Shangaan chiefs take a Hosi Nghunghunyani descendant to court to dispute that Nghunghunyani was their king. The descendant is one Mpisana Erick N’umalo who in 2005 applied at the Nhlapho commission to be declared king of the Shangaan people. At the time he denied some chiefs who disputed his claim their due. Speaking during the celebration of Nghunghunyani Day, held at the Giyani Information Centre over the weekend, N’umalo said he was prepared to go the extra mile to defend the rights of the Shangaan people to have a king of their own. “I’m ready to meet them in court. I don’t care what it takes and if lose I will appeal to the Constitutional Court. If that fails, I will take them to the International Court to seek arbitration there,” he said. “I invite every Shangaan in SA to go with me to the Pretoria High Court on 6 November, to hear what these people have to say. I was born king, I did not elect myself… let’s all go there to defend what belongs to us,” he urged all Xitsonga speakers. According to Mr Joe Maswanganyi, the researcher who has been researching Nghunghunyani’s Kingdom since 2005 when N’umalo launched his application for king-

Keeping traditional food alive in tourism class

Tourism pupils of Masiza and their teachers are seen here with some of the traditional dishes that they prepared during the celebration of Heritage Day at the school.

Preparing a delicious African dish takes more than a skilled hand — one needs experience to master the art. A well-prepared African dish can be a highlight to any tourist; this is why tourism pupils of Masiza High School at Mbaula village, Giyani, celebrate Heritage Day with traditional food every year. According to their principal, Mr Watson Mabunda, “trying out some delicious traditional food is part of every visitor’s wish when visiting our country, so teaching tourism pupils how to prepare traditional food come as an advantage to their course”. Guests at the school’s recent celebration were treated on va-Tsonga traditional food, cooked over an open fire in a three-legged pot: maize porridge, stewed meat, miroho (vegetables) tihove (traditional stump) and many other rural ingredients including xigugu, pumpkin porridge

and other traditional foods. Clad in va-Tsonga traditional dress, the pupils graced the event by dancing to the tune of traditional music. Meanwhile, the district senior communication manager in the Government Communication Information Service (GCIS), Mr Collins Ndlovu, commended the work done by the school in teaching practical work to tourism pupils, saying the school should serve as an example to other schools. “What this school is doing for these pupils is very unique; I haven’t come across any school in the country that is doing this kind of work with and fo their pupils. “I hope this will serve as an example to the neighbouring schools around here,” he said, urging community members to participate in activities that serve to preserve their cultural

Plasie girls also through to final The first girls cricket team of Merensky High School played against Pietersburg in the semi-final of Limpopo’s league recently. Merensky lost the toss and Pietersburg chose to field first. Elmien Marais performed well, scoring 45 runs off 71 balls. After lunch Pietersburg went in to bat. The Plasies were finally able to get them all out and won the match by 21 runs. Elmien Marais was a star with her bowling too and she and Charlene Geldenhys took three wickets each. The two teams, a boys and girls team, have formed a partnership with the Limpopo Blue Bulls to ensure their talents are developed and improve. The teams have been participating in the sevens rugby tournament in the Mopani District League and are the reigning champions. They are, however, in great need of a sponsor of rugby kits, training material and an experienced coach. Interested parties can contact their team manager, Mr Shai, on 082 491 3477. The Neglected Principle by Damian Jansen van Rensburg Mental Toughness – Part 1 Mental toughness is often a misleading term used by professionals to describe the mental capacity that a trainee or athlete possesses to compete and train well consistently. As non-competing athletes and everyday human beings it is still an important principle to pay attention to as it will decide how well you train, how long you train, the level of satisfaction you will experience and also how you will reach your goals. Five simple ways to improve your mental toughness are: To let bad experiences of the past

go and move forward. Focus on the present. Stay positive, focus on positive self talk and choosing to see the light rather than the darkness in every situation. Use rituals, rituals make you calm and bring you back to the familiar. Love the fight more than the finish, focus on how much you love the training and the opportunity to become better. Rowers from Oxford University in the UK and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) participated in a friendly competition on the Tzaneen Dam last Thursday. The two universities each brought two teams to compete in four races. UJ won the women’s 500 m sprint, while the Oxford Alumni won the men’s. UJ’s women’s team also bested their competitors in the 2 000 m race, while the Oxford team came first in the men’s race. UJ’s women’s team consisted not only of UJ students but also ladies from Tuks (University of Pretoria) and Rhodes University. Trio mean business on Magnatrek A family from Tzaneen is hoping that their family business experience will help them earn the R100 000 grand prize in this year’s Castrol Magnatrek which ends today. The trio of Rudi Viljoen, his son Ruan and his daughter Rowena are taking part in the Castrol Magnatrek 2012, hosted in partnership with Jacaranda FM. It is a five-day trek that pits teams head-to-head in some intense mental and physical challenges – they will need to outwit and outplay each other for a record R100 000 grand prize. This year a special Family Edition is being held, meaning family members can combine forces to make their strongest trio. “We work as a team in our family business, and the Magnatrek is

a great way to develop and use our teamwork, communications and spirit while having fun outside the business!” says Rowena. “Rudi (dad) is the cleverest man on earth; he is so wise and so patient and uses his coaching skills to coach his family as the most amazing team! Ruan is the craziest, most ready-foranything guy who is not afraid of anything! He is an adventure king and does things like Iron man, and Expedition Africa as part of his everyday life. But I had the brains to enter this amazing team, and I’m the perfect balance and glue for this team – an organizer and admin master!” The 2012 Castrol Magnatrek takes the teams on an epic trek through Gauteng’s most picturesque land-

scapes. The overnight venues include Muldersdrift, Magaliesburg, the banks of the Vaal in Parys and Pretoria. Castrol has run the Castrol Magnatrek since 2006 and it raises awareness about engine care in South Africa. Few people know that up to 75% of engine wear occurs while an engine warms up as most engine oils sink to the sump. Many people also don’t know what the right oil choice is for their car. With Castrol Magnatec, the product behind the Castrol Magnatrek, the Intelligent Molecules cling to the engine, even when it is off, always protecting and dramatically reducing engine wear during this critical period.
