Koma-raaisel 11-jarige glip skielik in koma

New sangoma in town

The beautiful Letaba River running parallel to a stretch of Claude Wheatley Street in Tzaneen has become home to yet another sangoma (above), barely one hundred meters from Molalatladi Makgoba, better known as “King Maphungubwe”. Maphungubwe told us that everyone in Tzaneen knows that the area was his. Previous efforts to remove him failed and the GTM don’t seem to be able to exercise their authority regarding his illegal occupation of land.

State-of-the-art magistrates’ court for Tzaneen Tzaneen is getting its long awaited new court building and it is clear that it will be a stateof-the-art building. It will provide accommodation for one high court, six regional courts, six district courts (criminal), four civil courts, two childrens’ courts, two family courts and two equality courts. The new building will also provide for special consultation rooms for laywers, where they can consult with their clients in private, there will be special play rooms for children who might be waiting for court proceedings and there will be special rooms for child witnesses. The Bulletin has seen the letter confirming the new development, sent by the Director General of Justice and Constitutional Development, Ms N Sindane, to the regional head of Justice in Limpopo, Adv Sonti. When asked about the good news, Tzaneen’s chief magistrate, Mr James Norval, confirmed that he has also been notified

• High court + 23 other courts • Play rooms for children • Proper offices for personel

• Consultation rooms for lawyers • Special rooms for child witnesses • Ample space for records of the department’s decision to create new facilities in Tzaneen. The new building will be erected on the site in Pompagalana, where the civil and family courts will move to next year (as was reported exclusively by the Buletin two weeks ago). The current court building’s future is not known, but it is said that it will be refurbished and that the SA Police would be likely occupants of the building; since they are spread out over Tzaneen in different buildings and it would make sense to consolidate their accommodation. Fact of the matter is that the present building is long past its expiry date in terms of the needs for Tzaneen. Space is a huge problem in the existing building and it is no mean achievement that the justice system in Tzaneen hasn’t come to a complete halt yet. In the meantime Norval confirmed this week that the justice department has informed him that they are attending to the telephone problem as a matter of urgency. Our enquiries at the departments were initially met with an undertaking that a response would be forthcoming, but then nobody was prepared to talk to us or either just take our calls in the past week! — Francois Aucamp francois@bulletin.us.com

‘n NUWE hart sukses Tzaneen se jongste hartontvanger, mnr Simon Venter, is tuis.

Brandskade

Councillor tied up and robbed Ms Margot McNeil, a DA councillor in Tzaneen, was bound and gagged and then robbed at her house in Agatha. Although some of her valuables were looted, she escaped unharmed. According to her, she was just dozing off last Thursday night around 23:30 when she saw dark shapes at her bedroom window. The next moment she realised the “big birds” (as she first

assumed) were three men climbing in through her window. She was forced out of the bed and told to point out valuables. Her hands and feet were then tied to the bed and she was gagged. The robbers proceeded to clear valuables in the main bedroom and study, which included jewellery, money and McNeil’s laptop and cell phone. The robbers then disappeared into the night, leaving her to wiggle loose and call for help. Her neighbours, the Martin Gubitz family, came to her rescue, and she would like to thank them for all their help and support.

Tzaneen SAPS clamp down

It is indeed a tough time for the criminals in Tzaneen, as the police are fighting crime in full force to make the town safe. The police in Tzaneen have done it again during the weekend, by arresting 47 people for miscellaneous criminal activities. According to Tzaneen Police communication officer Cst David Seale they have arrested ten people for violation of the road traffic act, five for drinking in public, two for fraud and two for urinating in public. Seale also said the police managed to arrest three for selling liquor without a license, one for illegal trading, six for shoplifting, four for assault with GBH, two for common robbery, nine for loitering, one for possession of a dangerous weapon and one for theft.

Meanwhile the Tzaneen Magistrates Court sentenced three men fore imprisonment for terrorising the South African Teachers Union’s offices at Lushof Plot, Deerpark. Nito Mario Machoe (38) from Mozambique was sentenced to forty years imprisonment. Jeffery Mohale Moloto (37) from Khujwana was sentenced to thirty years imprisonment and Nelito Mathebula (27), also from Mozambique, was sentenced to spend the next ten

With the festive season around the corner the Tzaneen Cluster commander, Maj Gen Maggy Mathebula, appointed Col Matome Sekhwela as Bolobedu’s new station commander, to enforce his strategies in fighting crime in the area. Sekhwela co-ordinated visible policing activities for all the police stations in the cluster, before being transferred. The Tzaneen Cluster appeals to community leaders and structures in Bolobedu to support Sekhwela in all aspects, including exposing criminals and syndicates involved in crime.

Standing ovation for Safety & Security MEC by Scopa In an unusual, but expected departure from procedure the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), Mr Derrick Ngobeni, led a standing ovation for the MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, Ms Florence Radzilani, for her department’s good and satisfactory response to questions on the reports of the Auditor-General (AG) to the Limpopo Legislature on Financial Statements and Performance Information for the year ended 31 March 2012. The standing ovation occurred during the Scopa public hearing on the department’s AG reports of the financial year ending 31 March 2012. The standing ovation was on account of the department having had responded ad-

equately to the queries raised in the AG’s audit findings for 2011/2012. What impressed the chairperson even more, was where the MEC acted when she was called upon to act to ensure clean governance in the department. “We don’t clap hands ordinarily,” Ngobeni said. “We now want a clean audit at the end of the financial year.” The office of the AG expressed satisfaction with the department’s strategy towards a clean audit. In her response Radzilani said that things fall apart if those privileged with the responsibility to lead, fail to lead. “We commit to work diligently in serving our people of Limpopo.”

Barbarians

Workers with grievances who wilfully and maliciously damage public and/or private property are hooligans and vandals, be it in Greece, Spain, Egypt, London or Tzaneen. The members of Samwu in Tzaneen who now make a habit of descending on town and causing havoc, are nothing less than hooligans and vandals. They don’t deserve to be in managerial positions, they don’t deserve any sympathy, they deserve to be punished, they deserve to be isolated from civilisation and they dont deserve any support, even though they may show cause. Governments in the Western world exercise far too much patience with hooliganism, and it will not surprise us one bit if the decent and civilised people in communities start some sort of counteroffensive to fight all forms of vandalistic hooliganism. The Tzaneen community is at the point where the despicable conduct of the people whose salaries are being paid by the community, ought to be considered. In the meantime the lame attitude of the police to act against people who clearly, openly and defiantly challenge the laws of the country, is pathetic and counterproductive. The poltroonery of the GTM’s councillors and top management in this matter is equally untenable.

Greater Letaba is wasting money The DA in the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM), is extremely disturbed to discover that the municipality has spent over R3 million on catering and accommodation between July and September. This wasteful expenditure should be seen in the context of poor service delivery in the municipality, such as lack of access to water and other basic amenities, said Mr Matie Willemse, the DA councillor. “Within these three months this municipality has spent more on non-service delivery issues such as travelling, catering and accommodation for its officials. More than R258 689 was spent on catering, R153 510 on travelling and R303 161 on accommodation within a month, that escalated to more than R3m within three months. “By contrast places like Goudplaas and Modjadjiskloof have been without water for a month now, while part of Kgapane and other surrounding areas have been without water since last year — while the roads are in a poor condition. “The Auditor-General’s report released recently shows that the GLM is one of the worst performing municipalities, who failed to get a clean audit in their previous financial year,” Willemse said. “I have asked for the matter to be investigated, as we regard this as a pure fruitless expenditure. Up to so far, our attempts to

Hul onlangse Kerskuiermark was weer uithanggehalte.

I have a great family, a family who loves each other, spots and all. However, we are not perfect and often we do have our differences but through prayer and communication we sort out these differences. One thing in all of this is our constant love for one another. The difference between our love for each other and the love that Christ has for each and everyone, is that Christ loves us unconditionally. He is not someone who gets angry at us for something we have said or done, He is ready to forgive, in fact He forgives us even before we ask. This is often not the case in some families, they bear grudges against each other which often leads to the breakdown in relationships. Many of us are afraid of failure; failure in or work, failure in society, failure in our relationships and failure in serving God. So how do we turn this all around? By having FAITH and allowing each other to make mistakes, but by being there for them, not criticizing them but, by building the up. Reassuring them that we have faith in them and that although they do make mistakes our love for them will never change. This is how Jesus sees us and I believe this is what He does, although we often do not call upon Him. We think that our problem is of less importance to Him when He is faced with all the problems in the world today. Jesus is interested in everything we do and He is there for us no matter what. All we need if FAITH. So let us all try to be more like Him. Forgive that person who was sluggish in serving you at the store or petrol station. Do you actually know what they are dealing with? It is a known fact that “A soft word turneth away anger.” So perhaps, we could just thank this person for the work they are doing even if it was not up to standard. In doing so I believe that this person will have a change of heart the next time you come into contact with them. It is in being more Christ-like that we will turn this nation into one which we all would like. Remember Christ’s instructions to His disciples in John 13 v 34-35 “A new command I give you, that you love one another as I have loved you…” Blessings

This and that • Dit en dat get the complete picture of this irregular expenditure by accessing information from this municipality have been barred by the mayor,” said Willemse.

Our attempts to call the provincial department to speak to someone about this gave us the signal that their telephone lines were also not working. “Being in the middle of the examination period, as it is now, this situation is completely unacceptable,” said Ms Desiree van der Walt, the DA’s spokesperson on education. «When I encountered the MEC of Education, Mr Masemola, in a portfolio committee of education, I asked him about this. In a nonchalant and uncaring response, he simply said I should ask the administrator. “This attitude confirms our long held view that Mr Masemola should have been made to vacate this position a long time ago. His continuous failures at the helm of this de-

partment and his refusal to accept responsibility shows little concern for the education of our children. “I will write to Premier Mathale to ask him to take urgent to restore telephone lines in our education system,” Van der Walt said.

Dit is grotendeels landbougrond by genoeg water.

Baie dankie. Security not so secure Residents in Tzaneen’s luxury security village, Golden Acres, are still in shock after Sunday’s armed robbery in the complex. This comes after a young lady was allegedly attacked in the complex not very long ago. Mr Willie du Plessis, his wife Raaikie and their son Gertjie were ambushed by seven men in the Du Plessis’ house. Tzaneen police communication officer Cst David Seale said that around 04:00 Sunday seven men entered the house, after they had broken an outside door. “The suspects held the family at gun point, while one person (Gertjie) opened the safe. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money, a 9 mm pistol, the victims’ wedding rings, a necklace and a pair of earrings. No-

body was injured”, according to Seale. It is said that the security guard at the entrance to the complex was sleeping while the robbery took place. However, the robbers got access from the side of the Tzaneen Dam, after they had cut the fence to get into the complex. Footprints confirm that they parked their vehicle next to the R71. Du Plessis sr is the owner of the well-known Harmonie Abbatoir between Lenyenye and Ofcolaco. For obvious safety reasons the Du Plessis’ didn’t want their photos taken. Police investigations continue and anyone with information should contact detective w.o Shikwambana on 083 5320 451 or 015 306 7684. — Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com

Carolan will bring a lot to SLC Mr Craig Carolan, current Deputy Headmaster of Stanford Lake College has, after an exhaustive search, been appointed by the Letaba Educational Trust as the new Headmaster. Carolan and his family moved to ‘the mountain’ after fifteen years in the United Kingdom where he taught at two exceptional English independent schools, Caterham and Whitgift. Prior to that he taught at Durban High School in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Carolan brings a wealth of experience to Stanford Lake College. His expertise lie in critical and creative thinking skills, and he believes that empowering

young people to become independent thinkers, as well as disciplined academics will enable them to achieve in the ever-changing world we live in. He represented SA as a hockey player and also believes that education should be a holistic, all-round investment in a child. The focus of all schools should be on developing each child to their full potential. Carolan believes that SLC has already positioned itself as a beacon of excellence in Limpopo and he is looking forward to taking the school to even greater heights in the near future. Carolan, his wife Penny and their two children, Matthew and Samantha, are very excited to have been welcomed into the Stanford family and look forward to many successes in the upcoming years.

Ueckermann heads back to Jo’burg The Headmaster of Stanford Lake College for the past five years, Mr Johann Ueckermann, is heading back to Johannesburg in December to take up his new position as Executive Headmaster at one of the flagship schools in Curro Holdings, Curro Aurora (as was reported in Bulletin last week). He said that this up and coming school in Randburg will soon host 1 900 pupils and described the opportunity to become part of a bigger listed setup as fantastic, although he is sad to leave the mountain. He reflected upon his tenure at SLC and described it as a gratifying and satisfying tenure with SLC achieving fantastic results in all areas and exponential growth in its facilities. In terms of quality education, the Gr 12’s produced some excellent results over the five year period. “If, as expected, the current 2012 matrics obtain an

unblemished record; 90% BD and two distinctions per candidate; we would have maintained a 100% pass rate, enabling 85, 34% of our students to attend university with an average 1,6 distinctions per candidate, ” said Ueckermann. SLC dominated the Small Schools and the Independent Schools sporting arena and provides a rich and varied cultural programme. “I was very pleased with a recent survey amongst top government officials and leading businessmen in the province. SLC was rated as the best independent school in Limpopo and we received the highly acclaimed Diamond Award from PVR. Another achievement was our inclusion in the Top 100 RSA schools list of the Alan Gray Orbis Foundation.” In February 2010 the family’s life crumbled when their grandchild was abducted. The Stanfordian family and

the community rallied their support in wonderful ways and they will always remember them for that. He thanks the Stanfordian and the English speaking community in Limpopo for accepting him, a ‘Boerseun’ into their fold. In the words of a mentor, Frederik van Zyl Slabbert, “There is not much I could, or can, do about it.” Or as Jean-Paul Sâtre put it: “You are a Jew because I look at you.” Even if I have offended all the stereotypes of what an Afrikaner is, I remain a wayward, rebel, atypical Afrikaner. So be it, said Ueckermann. The family is committed to retire in Tzaneen in ten years’ time. He is extremely happy about his deputy, Mr Craig Carolan’s appointment as the new Headmaster of SLC. He describes Carolan as “an energetic man who will achieve many great things in education in his lifetime.”

Win a ½ carat diamond

After more than a week since the key broke off in the door’s lock, a main entrance to the Tzaneen Post Office is accessible again. According to the branch manager, Mr Rodney Mogoboya, the door’s key broke when they tried to open it one morning. Asked why it had taken so long for the lock to be fixed, he said that it was done as quickly as possible and he apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Ickinger Jewellers and Music in Tzaneen is once again running their ‘win a diamond’ promotion. From November 2012 to April 2013 clients can stand the chance of winning a half carat diamond. — Retha Nel retha@bulletin.us.com

HANDELSNUUS / COMMERCIAL NEWS The Steers take-away restaurant at the Sasol R71 in Tzaneen was opened in 2005. “After seven years it has become old and tired and in need of a facelift,” said Ms Noelle Ellis, a manager at the Sasol R71. “We are heading for a busy holiday season, and we would like to offer customers an awesome experience! So we decided to revamp our store before the Xmas holidays start.” The restaurant will be closed from Monday (19 November) and the “new” restaurant should open again on Thursday.

The new look is named STEERS UNCUT. The restaurant will also implement the new purple square system, to improve speed and accuracy, ensuring that customers get exactly what they want really quickly! Ellis also said “we appreciate customers’ loyalty and support, since it is not always easy to get in and out of our site, but we are in the process of finalising all our accesses and hope to have it all sorted out early in the new year.” The photo shows what the ‘new’ Steers will look like.

As part of their social responsibility Butterfield Bakery in Tzaneen regularly gives back to the community. Each year they choose a school and ask the school to identify a need they can fulfil. This year Unity Primary School was chosen and indicated that they have great need for a shelter against the rain en sun for pupils waiting for buses and taxis. Butterfields

spent R11 400 building a shelter where pupils can now wait. Seen here are a few Unity pupils holding up a signboard under their new shelter. In die back are Messrs Piet Prinsloo (Butterfield Tzaneen), Floors van Zyl (MD Butterfield), Rudi Jansen (business consultant) and Pierre van Staden (Unity’s Deputy Principal). Photo: Retha Nel

Stumbelbloc is a revolutionary way to build a structure at twice the speed of traditional building methods, at almost half the cost. Using Stumbelbloc’s innovative moulds, building a structure is as simple as stacking blocks. Stumbelbloc hollow core blocks can be made on-site using the moulds, with basic manual labour and without any external power (fifty blocks per day per unskilled labourer). This simple design means that transport, production costs and carbon footprint are all minimized. The interlocking blocks are made by filling plastic moulds with a concrete mix and then left to dry. The finished product is an accurate, hollow-core block with a special interlock-

ing shape. The design eliminates the need for profiles, lines and constant lever checking, speeding up the building process. Building is also sped up by using the “dip and pack” method, which is more economical and stronger than using the conventional mortar method. Bed mortar called Blockgrip is used as a glue to keep the blocks together. A Stumbelbloc wall of 16 m x 2 m can be built from a foundation within forty minutes and a small house to roof level can be completed within only two days! The system requires no lintels and the complete structure can assume full loadbearing immediately. By using Stumbelbloc, a single person or even a communi-

ty can be empowered to create employment for themselves. Recently one bricklayer foreman, two handymen and four labourers erected a two bedroom 42 m2 cottage in six hours! Mr André Esterhuizen, owner of Stumbelbloc, said that the total cost of the completed cottage was only R57 000 and the quality is far superior to that of traditional low-cost housing. Only six bags of cement were needed to bond the brickwork and only 0,46 m3 of Skimplaster rendering were needed to render the exterior of the house (at a lower cost than that of conventional plaster). • Contact: Wikus van Wyk on 083 562 3693 or at gbwvw2009@gmail.com.
