Molebatsi Masedi There is a lot of hope and a lot of time to turn our communities and their institutions into drug-free places. Let us know our communities and what goes on there, good or bad. Let us know our children and what they are up to when they away from us - school or out to play. Most importantly let us reject and expose those who poison our communities with drugs. Susan Ettmayr There’s no hope. The world›s in a sorry mess. Seven billion people, wildlife going extinct, the Mayan calendar doesn’t work... nothing left to do but stand on your head and breathe.

Sommer so Kapow! natuurlik!

Mathale’s star is falling Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale might now have to also face some probing questions about his mission to South Korea and China in the dying moments of 2012. He was accompanied by the MEC for economic development, environment and tourism, Ms Pinkie Kekana, agriculture MEC Jacob Marule and transport MEC Pitsi Moloto. Trade unionists, joined by ANC politicians in the province, are allegedly preparing to confront him about the cost of the mission, at a time when Limpopo’s finances need to be sorted out and preserved. This comes after one of his MEC’s recently said it was time for him to go. The delegation visited “various areas of interest” in the two countries “with the aim to gain insight into their operations”. The pre-

mier also paid a visit to the governor of the Henan Province (China’s biggest agriculture region, where more than 10% of the country’s produce is grown). The world renowned LG CNS plant (electronics, telecommunications and services as well as chemicals) was visited, the Road Corporation Research Institute and the Icheon landfill site, the biggest in the world, folowed. In China the delegates visited Fantawild, an award winning entertainment company that specialises in theme parks. Mathale said “Fantawild has given us new ideas of exploring the tourism industry in Limpopo.” A plant where light bulbs are manufactured was visited and Huawei’s HQ was next (multinational networking, telecommunications equipment and services).

Sale of immature avos stopped The sale of immature avocados (which will not ripen properly) is now prohibited in terms of the Agricultural Product Standards Act. Inspectors from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) will be testing maturity levels of early season avocados offered for sale. If avocados are found to be immature, the sale of this fruit will be stopped. In the past, avocados found by inspectors to be immature were downgraded to “lowest grade”, but could still be sold. However, from this year immature fruit will have to be destroyed. Avocado growers are advised

to ensure that their fruit meets the required maturity standard before picking. For Fuerte fruit moisture content must be 80% or less. Reputable avocado packhouses are all able to carry out the necessary maturity testing. DAFF inspectors will be checking avocado maturity on the National Fresh Produce Markets. Growers should be sure that their avocados are properly mature before harvesting, to ensure that they do not run the risk of having their fruit destroyed. Ons Mening Vrydag 18 Januarie 2013

By Rev Ron Reiners

Nou weet ons

The New Year has started, for some it started with a bang, others again heralded it in quietly. What does the New Year mean to you and me? Is it “just another year” or does it mean that we have another chance to do something new?

— Redakteur

I am excited about the prospects this year holds, yes it is going to be a time of upheaval, disappointments and perhaps sadness. But if we have God on our side whatever comes we will be able to handle it. God made a promise that He would never leave us, so why then do we despair, is it because we do not trust Him enough? Faith is the greatest thing we as humans can have. It is the beginning and end of all things. We need to re-evaluate our beliefs, does God still exist or is He just a character from history, someone who was born, preached and taught and had a following. In modern day terms one could say it was a cult or something similar. But I do not believe this as God sent His only Son to earth to experience our way of life. To guide us, but more importantly, to mend the broken relationship between us and God. Jesus was, if we take it purely from a historical point of view, something of a radical. He was a Jew who knew the scriptures and He knew how people thought. Many were longing for someone to come and relieve their oppression, from the Romans. Someone to lead them in their quest to be a united nation. Jesus on the other hand seemed to be just a prophet, He did not have an army of men, just a few disciples. Yet He changed the world for the better of all mankind. After all He was prepared to suffer death on a cross, one of the cruellest means of death, not because He had done anything wrong, but because He was carrying out His Father’s will. He died that we might be re-united with God. Are we going to accept this fact? Or are we going to try to do everything on our own. By bringing our problems before Him, we will find it a lot easier to love one another, to make this a better world. Faith and trust is all that is needed. Faith and trust in Christ. My wish for all of you is that He truly blesses you this year as He always does. Blessings

Breakthrough for local newspaper

What started off as a “side line” project for a Limpopo based newspaper a few years ago, has now received international recognition. The AdBooker system that was developed by the Makhado based Zoutnet group (publishers of the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror newspapers) is one of the winners of the African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC). The names of the twenty winners in the competition were announced lduring the African Editors’ Forum’s annual general meeting held in Rwanda. The competition boasts with $1 million in funding and technical support to the digital journalism projects. ANIC is the largest fund for digital journalism experimentation in Africa, and is designed to spur solutions to the business, distribution and workplace challenges that face the media industry. A jury of fifteen international media strategists, technology innovators, and funding experts evaluated more than 500 project plans before selecting winners from a shortlist of forty projects. “Africa’s media face serious challenges, and each of our winners tries to solve a real-world problem that journalists are grappling with. This includes the public’s growing concern about the manipulation and accuracy of online content, plus concerns around the security of communications and of whistle-blowers or journalistic sources,” says Justin Arenstein, who manages ANIC as part of a wider digital innovation program with Africa’s largest association of media own-

ers and operators, the African Media Initiative (AMI). Winning projects will receive cash grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, plus additional technology support from a team of four full-time developers at AMI’s Accelerator lab in Kenya, and business development support from some of the world’s top media strategists affiliated with the World Association of Newspapers & News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). “ANIC believes that all projects have the potential to either be replicated by media elsewhere in Africa, or to be scaled up across the continent, to create wide and sustained impact,” says Arenstein. Peter Barron, Google’s Director of External Relations for Europe, Middle East and Africa said “We want to see journalism flourish in the digital age in Africa and the African News Innovation Challenge has helped spur some really exciting projects from across the continent. We’re looking forward to seeing these projects unfold and to working further with African journalists who are using technologies to gather and tell important stories.” ANIC’s founding partners include Google, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the U.S. State Department, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA).

The local project, AdBooker, started off in 2004 when Zoutnet realised the need for a centralised booking system for adverts appearing in the newspapers. Their web developer, William Stam, was tasked to develop such a system. Much against the trends of that time, he developed a web-based application. This had the advantage of being accessible via the internet on almost any platform. Since 2004 the AdBooker system was implemented in a number of newsrooms countrywide and proved to be a trusted tool for newspaper managers. In 2012 the system was completely redeveloped and the latest software programming technology was used to make it even more robust with added features. The revamped AdBooker was entered as a project in the African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC). The next step would be to make it available to more publishers, especially the smaller independent newspapers throughout southern Africa. “This is also why we are so delighted with the ANIC award,” says Anton van Zyl, the CEO of Zoutnet. “Our biggest challenge is to set up a research and design team that can do further technology development for small publishers. We need to secure the future sustainability of such a team, because independent publishers cannot be left behind insofar as development is concerned.” • The Zoutnet Group is part of LiN Media, the umbrella company representing ten independent newspaper in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

‘Learners beat us, please help’

ABOVE: The sight at Nkami High School is not a pleasant one. The grounds look neglected, whilst the atmosphere is tense. Pupils sat around during the mayor’s visit and projected an arrogant attitude towards the visitors. LEFT: Giyani mayor Pat Hlungwani, flanked by Mr Thomas Mabasa on his right in a white shirt and Mr David Hlungwani, a ward councillor, directly behind him.

“The same learner that wanted to beat the SGB chairperson today is the one that threatened to beat me up the other day, when he discovered that he didn’t pass his gr 9,” explained one of the teachers of Nkami High School at N’wadzeku-dzeku (village) near Giyani, Ms Nelly Chauke. She begged Giyani mayor Pat Hlungwani to raise the issue of the current pass policy stating that a gr 9 learner has to pass maths with at least 40% before being allowed to go to the next grade, with the authorities. “Not many learners can do maths… if you look at the failure rate you’ll see that the gr 9’s battle because of this policy,” she said. The mayor was at the school as part of a Back-to-school campaign to visit schools. The school had a 30% pass rate in 2011 and 39% in 2012. According to Mr Thomas Mabasa, a head of department at the school, this was as a result of the environment. “These kids come to school drunk because of the abundance of cheap alcohol in the area,” he said. “Last year one of our teachers was beaten up by a learner and nothing hap-

pened to him.” Mabasa said the learners had too many rights, and that even if they stay away from school, there was no hope them being expelled. According to him, the situation is fuelled by alcohol and lack of sports facilities. “Unfortunately the alcohol that they drink is not being regulated, since it’s a homemade cheap beer that everyone can brew and sell,” he said, begging the mayor to build sports facilities. The chairperson of the School Governing Body, Mr Wilson Chauke, appealed to the police to intervene at the school. “These kids are uncontrollable... they even beat up the security guards at the gate,” he said. The mayor promised the school sports facilities and urged the teachers to report any assault to the police. “As teachers you should embrace the ‘injury-to-one is an injury-to-all’ attitude so that this situation does not become a norm,” he said. He urged the school to work towards achieving a higher than 50% pass rate this year.” — Orlando Chauke orlando@bulletin.us.com

Light shines for Dan Ext 2 The light has finally shone for the residents of Dan Ext 2, Nkowankowa. The mayor, Ms Dikeledi Mmetle, some of the councillors of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality and residents braved the rain to mark the beginning of a project to electrify 543 homes in the village. The Nduna in charge of the village, Mr Nelson Mathe, said that the people had dreamt of electricity for a long time and thanked the

GTM for finally realizing that dream. He also pleaded with the contractor to hire local labourers to create employment. The project is expected to run for a duration of three months, offering the opportunity to labourers to earn R80 per day. The consultant, Mr Charles Kganyago (Leshika consulting engineers) said they would begin talks with the steering committee and work would commence by the end of the week.

According to him the community liaison officer has abeen appointed and would earn R3 000/month. He mentioned that the overall cost of the project is estimated at R3,4 million. Mmetle said the GTM had promised the residents electricity and has delivered. She appealed to residents to cooperate with the contractors and labourers to ensure the smooth running of the project. — Beaunice Mnisi beaunice@bulletin.us.com

The men in charge of the project are Messrs Charles Kganyago (Leshika consulting engineers), Putliso Dlamini (Leshika) and Phineas Matlala (contractor).

Woodwork can stimulate employment I don’t normally sketch out something on paper before I start cutting up wood; it just comes from the heart… sometimes I dream about a project before I begin it,” explain Solomon N’wandzule Giyani. The 52 year-old man has a mini dilapidated furniture factory called Red Leaves Furniture Manufacturers, where he works with his son and two other young men, fixing antique furniture and making imitation antique furniture at clients’ requests. He began learning about woodwork from his father at the age of seven. Solomon says “I have a rich knowledge and I am willing to train young men if the government could give me some woodworking equipment”. With the economy not being strong, Solomon’s work offers an alternative to those that are followers of antique furniture

but don’t have enough money to buy it from the shops, because it is very expensive. “Here clients can choose their own design and we do it for them at a negotiated price.” However, being in a dusty rural village where most people can hardly afford to buy ordinary furniture, not to mention the antique imitations, his outstanding work goes unnoticed. In an attempt to market his work, Solomon gave President Jacob Zuma one of his antique chairs as a present during Magaung process. “My understanding is that once we get known, our business will begin to flourish despite the location… we can’t rely on people around here for enough support, we need to get known elsewhere,” he said. Solomon N’wandzule and his son Masingita are seen with some of the — Orlando Chauke chairs that they have made. At the back is Jeffrey Ngoveni, one of the

— Amelia de Ridder amelia@bulletin.us.com

Rare orchid has botanists thinking A scarce orchid species that occurs in the Soutpansberg is causing scientists to scratch their heads. After lengthy studies, the academics can still not determine how these plants are pollinated and they believe this may provide a vital clue to its limited distribution. A botanist recently spent a week in the Soutpansberg, attempting to observe what agents are responsible for the pollination of this small orchid with the scientific name Mystacidium brayboniae. The plant is endemic to the Soutpansberg and was thought to be a high-forest spe-

cies. However, it is found more frequently in montane scrub and if it does occur in the forest, it is usually at the edges where there is more light. Among some of the other data collected, the scent of the flower is also harvested and analysed in a laboratory. Synthetically manufactured components of the scent are then exposed to various insects and their brain activity is monitored. The plants live on trees but are not parasites. The plants flower in the middle to the end of November for about two weeks. — LiN Media/Zoutpansberger

Jabu Pule shares his wayward experience in Giyani Becoming famous at the age of 18 is what destroyed him. This is what former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana soccer player, Jabu Mahlangu, famously known as Jabu Pule, told scholars at Giyani High School about the risks of life . He warned them to be careful when making decisions. “I went to school just like you guys, but unfortunately I didn’t finish. I dropped out in grade 11 because of soccer. You know, I got promoted at eighteen with all the things going my way,” explained Mahlangu, saying it was difficult to think straight when overwhelmed by fame. Mahlangu was speaking during a donation of soccer kit by Mr Benny Makasani and his friend, Dr Tembani Mathonsi, to Giyani High School where they both matriculated. Despite fame, Mhalangu said one of the reasons he didn’t go back to school was that he was a breadwinner at home. “I wanted to continue with schooling, but at the same time I needed to work so I could make a difference at home,” he said. He told the youngsters not to be swayed away from the right path by worldly things, just as it happened to him. “I played my first game and performed very well. I scored a winning goal for Chiefs, and then suddenly things changed,” he said. “Before I knew it, I was all over the newspapers on the following Sunday — people were talking about me. At that stage, many things were happening around me and I was not even aware that I was that good. To me, playing soccer was just part of doing what I loved.” “Within a short space of time I had gained many friends, millions of them, that I

couldn’t even distinguish as real friends,” he said. “It’s not easy to be a star. It takes years to go to the top, but it takes just seconds to go down.” He said he never thought that fame could

change his life, as people swelled around him and pampered him with free stuff. “You know when you’re a star, you get everything free wherever you go — alcohol and many other things I can name. And I was not aware at that time that those people were actu-
