Sorry! We don’t have any medicine. We cannot perform certain medical procedures in our theatres, since there are critical shortages of medical supplies. Are you hungry? You will have to pay for food or ask your relatives to bring you food. The hospital’s kitchen is empty! This is the situation in many/most state hospitals in Limpopo, also in Tzaneen and surroundings. Point is simply that there is no money for medical supplies and the provincial depot in Polokwane can’t help. Read the full story relating to the desperation of sick people in our area on page 3.

Dit is v.i.

• Daar is begrip vir mense wat sukkel as hul watertoevoer in die dorp onderbreek word en die mense dan by vriende gaan Amanda Strydom Dawid, we need a new brand new government, ones who care about the nation and our future!!! David Tshepo Setabola True, change is needed, the question is do other people see eye t eye with us. As as long as our leaders famillies and relatives are at safety people on ground stand no chance. They are given platforms to adress the nation when somebody have lost a life. They are gaining personality, they destroy our country. The coutry,s wealth is given to imigrants who dwell unlawfully on our soil. The peole who fought for

bad.

Sorry, no medicine available There is a serious shortage of medication and other medical supplies in Limpopo and the Van Velden hospital in Tzaneen has not escaped the situation. The Bulletin received numerous complaints from patients who are struggling to get their medication. According to them, it is especially patients needing medication for TB and HIV/AIDS who are being turned away.

However, Van Velden’s CEO, Ms Ellen Madike, denied that the hospital was running out of medicine or did not have medicine. Madike also said the hospital has not received any complaints regarding a shortage of medicine. The Bulletin has also received complaints about Kgapane hospital. It is alleged that the hospital is experiencing a food shortage and patients are being told to pay for their meals. The Limpopo department of health spokesperson, Ms Sinenhlanhla Gumede, confirmed that the department experienced a shortage of some medicines due to a shortage of funds. Gumede said that during the last three months of the 2011/12 financial year, some of the suppliers of Van April af kry inwoners van die Laeveld pharmaceuticals were put on die geleentheid om ‘n hoëgehalte diplomahold due to non-payment of kursus in teologie hier plaaslik te volg. ‘n Aantal beurse is beskikbaar. Gekeurde studente kan vir so min as R100 per module studeer. from the 2011/12 financial year. “The budget for the 2012/13 financial year was R553,905 million. That meant only R431,379 million was available for spending. The expenditure for 2011/12 according to BAS was R 485 457 000,” Gumede said. It is alleged that the biggest reason for the shortage of medicine is the fact that the department once awarded a tender to supply medicine to a close friend of Mr Julius Malema and that the supplier grossly overcharged the department. Another reason for the shortage is that the budget itself (at just short of R554 million is considered to be about half of what is really needed to satisfy the demand for medicine. It has also become known that private hospitals, such as the MediClinic Tzaneen, have been approached to help state hospitals with essential medical supplies on loan. It has been reported that at Letaba Hospital expensive surgical gloves used in the operating theatres have been handed out to cleaners, as the much cheaper cleaners’ gloves were not available. It has also been reported that at times operations couldn’t be performed at Letaba, because they had no stitching material. — Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com

Model’s breaktrough Not many young African girls get the opportunity to lead international models. Ado Adams Mohale, a 20 year-old model from Bridgeway (between Nkowankowa en Lenyenye) was recently crowned as The face of Cosmo Joule 2013 by a Brazilian based agency. This achievement will see her leading international models at different levels as The face of Cosmo Joule.

“This is a dream come true for me, because it’s something I’ve been longing for all my life. Securing an international deal is not that easy — many models would tell you it’s a blessing from God,” she said. Mohale has already travelled the world and seen many places. “When you become successful as model you are put onto a plane. It’s new to you, exciting and fun… it’s entirely different from the world that you have known.” She warns wanna-be models that life in the modelling industry is not that rosy in

the beginning. “The criticism coming from people around you as well as different judges on stage will wear you out, if you’re not strong.” Mohale says a “beauty-without-brains approach” does not work if one wants to become a known model. “I worked hard to get to where I am… I know that some people think models make lots of money by just getting half-naked and looking pretty. Beauty can’t get you through the room, but being brilliant will do it for you,” she said. — Orlando Chauke

As medikus besef hy hoe uiters noodsaaklik dit is.

NOTICE Bulletin will be distributed on Thursday next week. Avertisements for next week’s edition should thus be booked before 12:00 on Tuesday 26 March.

The National Police Commissioner was this week in the box and had to try and stand up to the interrogation of some very sharp jurists. She clearly showed that she was inexperienced.

U is welkom om my te skakel by 082 808 3204.

Avoid blood shortages Vanessa Raju, National Communications Manager, SA National Blood Service, vanessa.raju@sanbs.org.za, writes: As we approach the holiday breaks, we know

that traditionally this is a time when there are several road accidents, which adds to the daily demand for blood. It is also a time when blood collection is already difficult. This comes about with regular school, tertiary institutions and business blood drives being virtually impossible to assist in sustaining a safe blood stock level to meet the demand. In times like this we have to appeal to donors to make their way to one of the closest blood drives or donor centres. Unfortunately when the holidays arrive, the demand does not decrease, and approximately 3 000 units of blood is still needed by patients daily and for each day we are unable to make this target, the total units of blood that is available depletes. “We understand that many people will be busy or going on holiday over this period, but it only takes about thirty minutes of your time to make a huge difference to others in need of blood. Easter is often a time for family and donating blood is a great way of knowing you may be able to give someone else more time with theirs, and as our latest campaign states; Don’t Let Life , Get In The Way Of Life ” says Vanessa Raju, National Communications Manager of the , SANBS. If you are in good health and between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh more than 50 kg, and you lead a sexually safe lifestyle, make your way to your nearest donor centre. To find out where your nearest donor centre is visit www.sanbs.org.za, call toll free 0800 11 9031 or sms your name and postal code of the area you live in to 31454 and we will sms you details of your nearest blood donor centre.

So verval Tzaneen Tzaneen het ‘n nuwe motorwasbedryf in ‘n pragtige omgewing, spesiaal vir minibus taxi’s.

isting plants may remain but must be prevented from spreading. Examples are the Sword fern from Mexico and the West Indies and the Formosa lily from Taiwan. The last category is known as listed. The Shell ginger from East Asia falls under this category. It simply means that the plant has to be watched as it has the potential to spread and could be declared an invader in the near future. The late Box Thompson who started Cheerio Gardens outside Haenertsburg was friends with the chief gardener to the Japanese emperor. Through him she imported exotics like the azaleas, crab apples and cherry blossoms. She sold the azaleas but as the trees weren’t movers, she planted them all at Cheerio. Box was also responsible for bringing in the Formosa lily. This lily is not to be confused

with the harmless St Joseph lily. The Formosa lily has become rampant down the Magoebaskloof and the spread is exacerbated by hawkers cutting down the flowers and selling them along the roadside. SA is not the only country struggling with invasive plants. Australia has several plants, imported from SA, now classed as invaders. Our indigenous agapanthus is one such declared invader in Australia. — Susan Ettmayr

Alle koördineerders is vrywillig betrokke. Navrae: Lizelle Pienaar by 083 388 4640.

Go-slow looming at GTM About twenty managers of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality plan to engage in a go-slow (if they haven’t yet begun with a slow strike). The managers have been informed that they had been overpaid (for quite some time) and that they will have to repay a certain amount. The municipal manager of the GTM was not available for comment on this rather sensitive issue or to give a proper explanation of the state of affairs. Officials of the GTM are hesitant to talk about the latest development, for fear of victimisation. From what we can understand though, the managers were appointed on a contractual basis. Vir inligting besoek www.windgat. co.za of skakel Wolkberg Akademie by 083 262 3098. Foto: Retha Nel

The contracts allowed for remuneration that was well above the salary scale for the grade (level) of employees. When the contracts expired, the managers were employed, continuing to earn what they had earned as contract workers. We are also told that this was approved by the council and that the mistake has since been identified. Our information is that the workers will not accept the lower salaries and that they are not prepared to pay back any money. This could result in the GTM having to deal with a new crisis, at a stage when the GTM’s affairs are very unstable and the possibility of the GTM being placed under administration is very real indeed.

Vorster was the second swimmer to cross the finish line in the main race, with a time of 20:22 minutes.

Atlete presteer by SA’s

Hockey is healthy The Tzaneen Hockey Club ended the 2012 season on a high note last year. The ladies’ team finished second in the Limpopo league and the men’s team was placed fifth. During the season the games were played every second Sunday at Stanford Lake College. Teams traveled from Phalaborwa, Levubu, Polokwane, University of the North and Musina to enjoy good, competitive hockey. The Tzaneen players recognised sporting excellence during an awards dinner held recently at Unicorn School in Tzaneen. It was encouraging to see so much young talent from our own area. Local sponsors were acknowledged and thanked for having made it possible for the team to have their own team kit, maintain the local sports fields and to ensure that hockey grows from strength to strength in Limpopo. If you would like to join the hockey club come to practice at Unicorn Preparatory Sports Fields every Wednesday @ 17:30. The League matches start in April. Call Sasha on 083 697 7708 for more info.

Local paintball team aims high

Paintball might not be well known as a sport to most people. A combined team of players from the Tzaneen region is planning a big marketing splash at the annual Air Show at Swartkop Air Force Base, Pretoria, on 11 May. Together with a team from the Vaal Triangle they will take part in a simulated battle in front of the 40 000 spectators. Team leader Juan Labuschagne from Tzaneen says “the aim behind the initiative is to market the sport of paintball in South Africa by creating awareness”. The team attended the March Fly-

No mist at Ebenezer Mile

Sunny skies and high temperatures characterised this year’s Ebenezer Mile. With no signs of the ‘misty mile’s’ usual cold and misty weather, spectators changed their raincoats and umbrellas for sunscreen and a cold drink in hand. Participants came from a number of places abroad to participate in the mile, as

well as the 3 000 m, which is a Swimming SA (SSA) qualification event. Both spectators and participants were noticeably less this year, after last year’s bad weather called for a few hours’ postponement and resulted in the shortening of the mile and cancellation of the 3 000 m race. The mile’s organisers are, however,

optimistic that entries and spectators will increase next year, due to the smooth sailing of the 2013 event. The clear skies and warm weather promised an easier swim than in 2012, but swimmers complained about having to battle choppy water circling back to shore. Besides the event being held on a Saturday this

ing Day at Swartkop to conduct training in preparation for May and to support the 100 hours for breast cancer awareness. “We invite people from Tzaneen and the surrounding area who would like to show their support and enjoy a day at the Air Show to join us and have some fun,” said Labuschagne. Paintball is an action filled sport with opposing teams shooting each other with paint filled balls at distances of up to 60 m. Paintball is the third most popular adrenaline sport in the world.

year, the races also took place during the afternoon in an effort to beat the mist. But nothing could be done to warm the icy water and swimmers emerged shivering and quickly wrapping themselves in towels. Five races were held this year: the open mile for females under 13 and over 31, one for the males of those age groups, as well as the main mile for swimmers aged between 14 and 30. There

Paintball team members from our area are seen here at Swartkop Air Force Base with an Air Force helicopter. In front is Gerhard Grobler (Buffalo Recon). Behind him are Gerard Taute (Battlefest), Henk van Wyngaardt (Wolfpack), Marc van Zyl (Battlefest) and Paul Maartens (Odin 6). At the back are Flippie Labuschagne (LSPB), Lynton Evans (LSPB), Juan Labuschagne (Odin 6 captain), Vehan Labuschagne (LSPB), Jaco Engelbrecht (LSPB), Willem Gething (LSPB), Douglas Gething (LSPB), Evan Gething (LSPB) and Charl Labuschagne (Odin 6). LSPB and Odin 6 are teams from Mooketsi, Wolfpack is a Tzaneen team, Battlefest is from Makhado/Louis Trichardt and Buffalo Recon is a team from Polokwane.

were also the 3 000 m swim and the 500 m fun swim. In the main race (the mile for ages 14 to 30) Oostewald van Niekerk emerged victorious with a time of 19:46 minutes. Leoné Vorster followed close on his heels with a time of 20:22 minutes. Van Niekerk was also the winner of the 3 000 m with a time of 38:55 minutes. Anél de Vos followed with a time of 41:55 minutes. There were no real inci-

dents and only a few swimmers had to be taken to shore with the police jet-ski or boat due to cramps or exhaustion. People interested in participating next year are encouraged to start training early, to be properly prepared for the challenge. — Retha Nel retha@bulletin.us.com
