Rumor has it that the chief traffic officer of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Mr Johannes Malatje, is being investigated by the Hawks. Neigbours of Malatje are adamant that his house was being cordoned off by police officers a week or so ago, but the Bulletin couldn’t find any police spokesperson in the Tzaneen cluster to confirm this. We also spoke to a spokesperson of the Hawks, who made it clear that they don’t deny or confirm people being investigate d prematurely. Malatje’s lifestyle has allegedly been under scrutiny for some time. The palatial multi-storey house that he is building just outside Lenyenye (left), now nearing completion, is said to have caused suspicion. He is said to also own three minibus taxis, a luxury Mercedes-Benz and neighbours say that he recently bought his son, who is still at school, a Toyota.

After the intense debate on the use of drugs and the ease of access to it in Tzaneen, the question now is: What do you, as a Tzaneener, suggest to address this problem? Interesting talk I once attended the speaker made sense... Trying to catch the dealers when there is 100 more to take their space if they get caught does not make sense. Catch the ones using and demand will drop. Be harsh with school kids... The tough love approach. It’s all that will work. Education is key, but so is removing the users from the schools and society for a while. Parents need to test their children, all the time. Catching them early will also form part of eradicating the problem. For them and others. Ouers! Asb beskerm jul kinders. Soos in kos, byvoorbeeld. Vleis is mos vleis.

Tog was 2012 se rekordslaagsyfer 73%!

Premier says “we work to ensure a better life for all” The Easter holiday is upon us again and we should use it to asses our progress in terms of the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. This will assist us to review these goals and make the necessary changes to ensure that we remain on track. At the same time, we must make time for rest and relaxation by way of reviving the mind. Let us remember to take caution on the roads by driving within the speed limits and obeying all the rules.

Mr Stephan Devine, a fire management instructor, is standing next to Mr Tony Long, who was elected as vice chairperson of the new LFPA committee. Next to him is Ms Maritza Swanepoel, the re-elected secretary, and Mr Trevor Phillips, chairperson of the fire committee.

LFPA meet with landowners The Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) recently held their annual meeting at Westfalia. The previous years’ expenses were discussed and the budget for this year was announced. The chairman of the LFPA, Mr Trevor Phillips, also mentioned that a new fire manager, who would play an active roll in the LFPA, has to be appointed in the near future. The landowners who attended the meeting also heard that membership fees would be increased. An annual fee of R30 (+ VAT) per hectare will now be payable. The membership-only fee has also been raised to R9,40 (+ VAT) per hectare.

Mr Stephan Devine, a fire management instructor from the Forest Fire Association, addressed the crowd on the importance of proper training. He said that everyone, from the ground level up, (from landowners and supervisors to foresters and “bakkie-sakkie”-drivers) should know how to adequately fight fires. Landowners were encouraged to attend the Letaba Fire Week that will be held at the show grounds in Tzaneen in April. The meeting closed with the re-election of the new fire committee. — Amelia de Ridder amelia@bulletin.us.com

Ba-Phalaborwa third greenest The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality not the Greater Tzaneen Municipality represented Mopani District at the Limpopo Greenest Municipality awards for 2013. The awards which were organised by the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) were held in Polokwane earlier this year. According to Mr Lucky Phosa, spokesperson of LEDET, the GTM was unable to reach the provincial level of the competition. He explained that only one local municipality could represent the district and in Mopani, Ba-Phalaborwa was the chosen candidate. Ba-Phalaborwa came in third position, while Polokwane Municipality was second and Mogalakwena Municipality was first. — Beaunice Mnisi beaunice@bulletin.us.com

Don’t Drink and Drive. The idea is to Arrive Alive. We should return from the holiday with renewed energy and commitment to our work. As government we will continue with our mandate to provide quality services in health and education; access to housing, water and sanitation; building bridges and roads; improving safety and security and developing rural areas with the ultimate goal of ensuring a better life for all people in our Province. Different stakeholders visited the victim’s home and showered the family with food parcels, blankets, building materials and even cash. The Tzaneen police have done it again and this time apprehended 47 people for violating the road traffic act and forty for drinking in public. After the launch of operation Easter, the Tzaneen police intensified their visibility and major successes were made. According to Tzaneen communication officer, Const David Seale, the police detained about 125 offenders and police will ensure that criminals are being watched very closely during the Easter weekend. “No

mercy shall be shown to them”, said Seale. Eight people were arrested for assault GBH, three for illegal gambling and eleven for loitering. Among those arrested were also two people for assault common, two for house breaking, two for theft and another two for shoplifting. One person was arrested for possession of dagga, one for fraud, one for illegal gambling and one shebeen was closed down as the owner sold liquor without a license.

Busy week in Bolobedu The Bolobedu police went out in full force to clean up the streets and 57 people were nabbed during the police’s raid. Fourteen people got arrested for drinking in public, seven for illegal gambling, another seven for assault GBH and eight for possession of counterfeit banknotes.

Municipalities fight HIV/AIDS Representatives of the five municipalities in the jurisdictiuon of the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) as well as community stakeholders gathered at the Karibu Leisure Resort, near Tarentaalrand, for the district’s department of health indaba on the prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT). The aim of the conference was to educate people from various sectors of the community as well as health practitioners on the facts and treatment regarding HIV/ AIDS, especially concerning mother to child transmission. To this end, religious leaders, traditional health practitioners, traditional leaders, nurses, care-givers, Love Life and other orga-

nizations involved with health attended the indaba. According to the statistics the district’s transmission rate is 2,8% and the aim is to reduce it to zero by 2015. To combat this, the fixed dose combination tablet for pregnant women with HIV/Aids will be available at local government clinics from 1 April. Health practitioners also encouraged breast feeding for at least six months as the only food for the newborn child, as it helps with the physical development. On the second day of the indaba the delegates had to form five commissions where various subjects were discussed. Many solutions were found to problems relating to the topics: the importance of knowing your status,

Four people were arrested for rape, two for reckless and negligent driving, three for theft of a motor vehicle, two for house robbery and two for possession of suspected stolen property. One person was arrested for murder, one for shoplifting, one for theft and one for robbery of a business.

Still behind bars The alleged Pulaneng rapist appeared in the Naphuno Magistrates Court on charges of rape and attempted murder. David Sekobela (29) will remain in police custody pending further investigation and his case was remanded to 27 March (yesterday). Sekgobela is accused of raping a two year-old child at Pulaneng village. He allegedly broke into the house of the victim and dragged the child into the bushes, where he allegedly raped and left her for dead. Meanwhile, the police in Maake have ap-

contraception and basic antenatal care, cultural dynamics, myths and facts about HIV in the PMTCT context, nutrition in the era of HIV and management, treatment and support of the HIV positive woman and exposed and/or infected babies. At the end of the workshop, many delegates commented on their experience. “I think more workshops and indabas like this one in the district will help a lot,” the acting mayor of the MDM, Mr Sewela Mshobane, remarked. Love Life Groundbreakers, Bestern Chauke and Tshepo Sehloane, said: “As Love Life groundbreakers we have to form a campaign which will enable us to teach and prevent, not encourage, teenagers to experiment with teenage pregnancy.” Before the delegates left they were encouraged to follow the department of health’s motto: “Ccommunities working together to get zero mother to child transmission of HIV”. — Nhlangula Sithole

prehended a group of transgressors in the past week: Fourteen people were arrested for contravening the road traffic act; seven were arrested for drinking in public, two for rape and two for culpable homicide. Single arrests were made with one person arrested for possession of dagga, one for stock theft and another one for shoplifting. The police also arrested two people for robbery, two for common assault, two for assault GBH, two for housebreaking and two for theft.

Police on Easter watch Operation Easter has so far yielded excellent results, as police in Letsitele acted in full force to ensure that motorists obey the traffic rules. A surprising 54 arrests were made for violating the road traffic act

in the past week. Letsitele police communication officer, Const Ntsako Mabunda, appealed to the public to stop drinking and driving as they are putting the lives of innocent people in danger. “We are warning all road users that police will show zero tolerance towards those who drive under the influence of alcohol,” Mabunda warned. During the operation police also managed to close down nine shebeens for violating the liquor act, five people were arrested for trading without a licence, three for illegal gambling, four for possession of dagga and two for possession of a dangerous weapon. Five people were also arrested for burglary, three for robbery, another three for assault GBH, one for theft and one for urinating in public.

Miners return to work Workers at Phalaborwa Mining Company (PMC) ended their seven-day strike and returned to work on Saturday, after PMC’s management obtained a court order to force them to return to work or face the axe. This comes after 71 workers at the mine, comprising of day and night-shift workers, staged an unlawful sit-in underground (lasting seven days) without coming to the surface. According to a NUM representative at the mine, Mr Oupa Magagula, who is also a NUM branch secretary in the area, the main cause of the strike was rope failure — which he says the workers were not warned about. “There are few things that PMC employees are not happy abou. They demand an underground allowance, adjustment of salaries, rope failure reports, fatality reports, a report of Chris Mashego’s death, nepotism, a dining room and personal protective equipment,” he said. Mr Anthony Lennox, the managing director of PMC, said they were pleased that the striking employees came out of the mine without any injuries and without a need for force to get them back up. “I am very grateful to our employees who kept all other sections of our business running during this challenging time. “They carried out their tasks without any indication of difficulty and ensured that we were able to keep magnetite, copper and vermiculite supplies moving through to our customers,” he said. Each employee that was underground for seven days was assessed in the local clinic, to make sure that their lives were not in danger.

Who will be next to be exposed and taken to task?

Rev Ron Reiners Tzaneen Anglican Church

When one is called by God to serve Him in His Church as a pastor, priest, dominee or whatever we are called, we must remember that He called us to be a shepherd to His flock. We are not the most important person in the Church because of the rank or status we hold. God put us in this position to be a servant to His people. Often our congregants think that we can do no wrong and some even live in awe of us. One thing may be certain and that is that we have studied to be considered as a shepherd. This does not mean that we know all the scriptures. We need to continue constantly in reading them and discussing with others the interpretation of them. We may get it wrong at times, but if we are guided by the Holy Spirit then most of the times we will receive the correct word. I think that some people think that we have to be there whenever they need us. This is true we need to be there for our flock, but one must remember that due to the vast expansion of cities and even the rural area it is sometimes difficult to see everyone each month. Each congregant has different needs and we need to consider carefully how to meet these needs. We too have families who need us as a spouse, a parent our just a friend. So often we have to do a juggling act to be available for everyone. I am certain that each of us who are called by God to be shepherds will be only too willing to help others even if they do not belong to our specific denomination. Thus I invite you all when you feel the need to speak to someone especially a shepherd to contact any of the known shepherds. Do not always wait until you can get hold of your shepherd. It may be too late. As I have said we are servants of God and thus we have been called to help others in their time of need. Get to know the other shepherds in this great town. We will endeavour to help you and often just speaking to someone helps. We will not try to influence you to join our denomination, although we would welcome you at anytime. God is moving in Tzaneen and His timing is always perfect so I invite you to pray for all of us, we desperately need your prayers in order for us to obey God. Blessings

Chief releases land for development

The Geater Giyani Municipality (GGM) will, for the first time in more than twenty years, have land for demarcation of residential sites. Hosi Ngove V signed an agreement with the GGM to release part of his land for development. This comes after years of negotiation between him and the municipality to release a portion of land that is close to Giyani’s CBD, so it could be used for developmental purposes that would bring about shopping malls and other development. The agreement will not only see the creation of jobs, but will also help to overcome

a backlog in residential sites in Giyani. This has been hindering the growth of the municipality for many years. Ngove said “the Mabunda traditional authority agrees on a public partnership to make land available to greater Giyani municipality for developmental purposes. In order to achieve the set objectives, the Mabunda traditional authority and the GGM resolved to work together [in the development of the land]… this includes assuming respective developmental functions

that will bring change to the current use and the condition of the land.” He also promised to create more than one thousand “directly or indirectly” by 2014 to the area under his jurisdiction. “What I mean by ‘directly and indirectly’ is that some of the jobs will be created through partnership while some will be created through the use of the resources that we already have,” he said. The agreement was signed in the presence of the minister for Cooperative Governance

and Traditional Affairs, Mr Richard Baloyi, Limpopo’s MEC for Health and Social Development, Mr Norman Mabasa, and Mopani district mayor Joshua Matlou. Speaking at the event Baloyi said “traditional communities have rights to developed areas like any other urban areas”. He said “this can only happen if their leaders could release land for development just like Hosi Ngove did, and give it up for development”. He added traditional communities also have their rights to services as well as good governance. — Orlando Chauke

HAPPY EASTER

An explosion of creativity It was a pleasant day at Mina’s (Zwakala) outside Tzaneen, with the first Creative Migrations Arts Festival being held there this past weekend. This festival is a place for people to come and enjoy being themselves — feeding their love for music, art and poetry. The event featured some of Pretoria’s and Limpopo’s most unique and talented artists. ShiNdig Awe of Limpopo welcomed Capital Arts Revolution of Pretoria to the mountains to feed their souls with music and art. Other artists included Ndo & the Revolutionaries, Stone Aged Souls, Naftafli & The Royal Family, Bok Ini Berg (Chris J Mocke), Freedom in Jazz, ZimSA Mbira ensemble, Mukondi & Matsheka and Joel Karabo Elliott. A spectacular, somewhat magical at-

mosphere was present. People brought their blankets, found a perfect spot and threw their heads back with laugher while enjoying filling the music, drinks and wholesome delicacies. The Creative Migrations Arts Festival this past weekend brought different artists together to showcase their talents and to entertain the art-loving spectators. It was a fun day, filled with workshops, dialogues, art exhibitions and even face painting for the children. The initiative started in 2012 when Naftali — a member of the Royal Family — took a piece job in the village of GaMamabolo, Limpopo, last year. He ventured out of the concrete jungle — away from the thorn veld of central Limpopo — away from his home and delved into the northern foothills of the

Drakensberg, where he found a quiet place to do his work. Exhausted from the journey, he was taken in by a group of poet-singers living atop the mountain. They sheltered him, gave him the milk of creativity and revived him with ancient songs. They told him of the shindig, and that it wasn’t far away. The shindig came and Naftali sang, and as he sang, the mountain air echoed unity through his lungs. And now, a year later, hundreds of people unite in Magoebaskloof and the legacy lives on… — Annemieke Maritz annemieke@bulletin.us.com

HAPPY EASTER Last week the Warriors Rotaract CLub, sponsored by the Letaba Rotary Club, went to visit the Letaba SPCA for a day. The SPCA Chairperson and inspector, Ellie Potgieter, educated them on the SPCA’s work and tolf them some horror stories of abused and abandoned animals etc. They spent the day playing with and helping to clean animals and taking them for walks. They also assisted in cleaning the grounds. This visit inspired them to take to the streets of

Tzaneen to do some canshaking to raise funds for the SPCA. They dressed up (as they always do) as ballerinas, beach boys and super heroes and managed to raise R4 136,45 for the SPCA. The Warriors Rotaract Club would like to thank Ellie Potgieter and her team for the hard work and love put in at the SPCA and also to the citizens of Tzaneen who all contributed towards raising these funds for the SPCA, and supporting the Warriors in their cause.

The Warrior Rotaracters joined members of the Letaba Rotary club in donating new mattresses, new blankets and new sheets to the new young learners at the Yingisani School for the deaf during the Rotaract weemk earlier this month. Seen here are the group of Warrior Rotaracters collated under a brand new notice board, donated by Rotary, with a few of new Yingisani scholars.

Trophy Toyota takes the lead in Modjadjiskloof THEN

NOW

The recent closing down of a canning factory in Modjadjsikloof was experienced as a setback for the town. However, the major upgrading of Trophy Toyota in the town’s main street has injected new enthusiasm in the town and residents are proud of what has been achieved by one of Modjajdjiskloof’s oldest and most respected businesses. The history of the dealership is rather fascinating: • Trophy Motors was started in 1965 and became a Toyota Dealership in 1966 — founded by Stanley and Jenny Murray. • Trophy was the first Toyota Dealership north of Pretoria. • One of the first cars sold

was a Toyota Corona, sold to Martin Slabbert in July 1966 for R1 718! • The first telephone bill was for R15,78. • The first renovations where done in 1984 when they expanded the premises. • Stanley & Jenny’s son Clifford joined the business in 1990, followed by their daughter Wendy after the birth of Ryan, who is now their accountant. • Soon after Wendy, husband Jon joined the business as a sales Manager. • Since Stanley’s passing and Jenny’s retirement Jon is the dealer principal and Wendy the financial manager and grandson Ryan is the

accountant. • Back in 1967 the workshop was manned by only one mechanic, Phillip Poh,l who was with the company for a few decades. • Since then the company upgraded in 2000 after serious flooding and has continued to grow from strength to strength. • Very recently they completed their largest renovation yet, conforming to world class standards and unveiling a brand new dealership. • Back in 2001 Jenny was asked about their secret to success and she replied: “Good Teamwork and old fashioned principles — while we have a very new fashioned building with a wide range of features like special facilities for the disabled and energy saving structures, the old principles and special care of customers will always remain of utmost importance. • Visit Trophy and have a look and experience Trophy Toyota’s Service Excellence first hand!

The management team at Trophy can be seen here. At the back are Karin Ludik (F&J), John Hyde (dealer principal) Sias Cherane (vehicle sales manager), Ryan Hyde (accountant), Cavin Duberly (vehicle sales), Maaki Rikhotso (F&J). In the front are Chantelle Luther (vehicle sales), Angie Taylor (sales), Marcia Van Zyl (admin), Wendy Hyde (financial manager), Angelique Eagar (reception) Danielle Souchon (marketing).

ke in Afrika.

‘n Aantal beurse is beskikbaar. Gekeurde studente kan vir so min as R100 per module studeer. Skakel De Beer by 083 3911 065 vir meer inligting, of besoek www.mukhanyo.co.za.

Lion paw joins Giyani boxing club

Dion Mbubana in training

After a couple of months of rest and unemployed, Dion Mbubana has finally decided to return to boxing, a sport with which he hopes to change his financial status for better. Starting boxing in 2009 as an amateur in Thohoyandou, the 27 year-old later climbed a step further to train professional boxing in 2011. However, in 2012 he quit boxing for personal reasons and went to Jo’burg in a hope for greener pastures. “While there I hopped from one piece job to another trying to make the ends meet, until I realised that that was not for me… I belong in the ring,” he explained. “I find it much easier to survive in the ring than I do outside it.”

Mbubana has had six professional fights. He has won four of them and lost two on points. Though timid and calm up close… in the Ring he is said to be a beast that devours opponents like prey in the bush. Out of the four fights that he won, two of them have been won technically after the opponents apparently ran away in fear of him since he had a history of knocking down an opponent in thirty seconds. “You can have all skills in the world but they’ll go to waste if you’re gasping for air after just the first round… most boxers struggle to hold on to the last, and this is where they lose the match,” he said emphasizing his secret weapon in the ring.

They call him “The Lion” because he is said to be very strong in the ring, no matter which opponent he is squared off with. “It’s certainly feels good to have your hand raised at the end of the match, but to achieve it is not that easy… it requires a lot of dedication and gym visits,” explained Emmanuel Mutavhatsindi, the Giyani boxing club promoter who now trains him. Mutavhatsindi said Mbubana was a devoted boxer who has a promising future, and would bolster his team of boxers. He added that he was currently busy with the arrangements to secure a space for him and other boxers for the coming fight to be staged on 28 April in Polokwane.

Boxing trainer, Emmanuel Mutavhatsindi. “After the Polokwane fight we will prepare for another fight in Namibia in which he had been considered to fight. I would like to thank Giyani Spar and Mabunda Bottle store for their support, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to afford to fly a boxer to Namibia or any other country for a fight,” he said.
