VOS VOSBOK! Fear lessl y the tr uth

Al drie was potensiële sterre.

Gravelotte se pokkel is pure Bok!

Do car guards really play an essential role in protecting property and therefore getting rewarded for it?

“Wys my waar is my kar wat jy opgepas het” vra ek hom. Natuurlik het hy nie die vaagste benul gehad watter een van die honderde karre my kar was nie! “Hoe kon jy my kar oppas as jy nie eens weet watter een myne is nie?” Hy kon my nie antwoord nie - en het dus nie n duit van my gekry nie. Cara Luüs Erasmus Elvis is different; he’s taken down a license plate number of someone who bumped my car. We should learn to be more caring and not place everyone under the same “skeerkam” (sorry for afrikaans) I truly have hope there is more people out there like Elvis, you works night and day actually. Pat Patterson Yes, a couple of them are worth their salt (not all) Elvis is a star. Gerhardt Malan In my honest opinion, teach them the true meaning of ‘’Gaurd’’ before they start ‘’garding’’ our private property, when or if they are registered gaurds with psira you can always complain to get them revoked from psira. No psira grade, no work as easy as that.... Mauritz Swart One day one of these car guards might surprise you by truly protecting your property and you haters will count your words. . Elivs is a good example. Known him for years. Alles reg. So thumbs up vir Elvis ek dink hy verdien n medalje of toekenning. Amanda Strydom Soms.

Two officials suspended The chairperson of the Finance Portfolio Committee of the Phalaborwa Municipality, Mr Percy Maphanzela, as well as the municipality’s legal advisor, Adv Lepeti Mokoape, have been suspended. Maphanzela was suspended for two months pending an investigation. He was instructed not to enter municipal premises during this period, while Mokoape’s suspension is indefinite. Their suspension follows the recent strike by SAMWU, when it was claimed that Maphan-ze-

la contravened the code of conduct for municipal officials, by coming to work with a firearm. Mokoape was accused of “misre-presenting a court judgment.” Mokoape allegedly told the council that the workers had lost their cases at the CCMA, when instead they had won. In a turn of events, the newly appointed director for corporate Services, Maite Moakamela, ordered the return of Mr Secelo Bengu from a three month suspension ordered by Mokoape.

GTM council approves prepaid meters The Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s council meeting set the stage for some interesting announcements, one of which was the installation of prepaid electricity meters in Flora Park. To ensure the smooth running of the process, a separate department within the electrical engineering department will be established to deal solely with prepaid electricity in the GTM. New prepaid electricity connections will also be made to existing prepaid instillations in Politsi, Tarentaalrand, Lemoenfontein, Talana and Tamahansi. This is a provision that the GTM has made for maintenance and capital expenditure which include changing of all old equipment. The project will be funded by the money generated from fines for tampering with

prepaid meters. This will no doubt create job opportunities, as the director of engineering services has been given the goahead to request additional personnel. The GTM should be rid of all temporary contracts by the end of June. Council approved a proposal to have all temporary positions advertised internally, and appointments made. There is also good news for the GTM employees whose contracts were terminated at the end of March, as their contracts will be extended until end of June. Council also decided to change the pay day for municipal employees from the last Friday of every month to the 25th of every month. This change will be implemented by the end of this month. — Beaunice Mnisi beaunice@bulletin.us.com

Under-performing contractor sent packing by MDM The completion time on the extensions to the Mopani District Municipality’s Disaster Management Centre in Tzaneen has been prolonged and it’s looking highly unlikely that the building will meet the target date. The Bulletin first published the story on the expansion of the building in July 2012 and almost a year later construction on the site has still not been completed. According to Mr Neil Shikwambana, the spokesperson of the MDM, the contract has been terminated due to under-performance on the part of the contractor. Shikwambana said they were in the process of appointing a new contractor and that he would consult and then give more feedback on how far they were with the

process. Construction on the building is said to will cost the MDM R92 million, giving way to rumours that the MDM will relocate to Tzaneen once construction of the building is completed. However, the MDM has dismissed these rmours and said that the building will house their Tzaneen offices and the main offices of the municipality will remain in Giyani. By the time of going to print the Bulletin was still waiting for information pertaining to the contractor. When asked who the contractor in question was, Shikwambana said he would come back to us on that. Beaunice Mnisi beaunice@bulletin.us.com

Help save a life in June by donating blood at the SANBS during Blood Donor Month. World Blood Donor Day is celebrated globally on 14 June every year. The SA National Blood Service (SANBS) is a non-profit organisation that provides an essential service, in the provision of blood and blood products, research and training provided. In support of World Blood Donor Day, SANBS has marked June as Blood Donor Month as blood donations play a vital role in the provision of helping pregnant women, chronic patients, people involved in fatal accidents and various others medical surgeries including cancer related conditions. World Donor Day is significantly important this year, as it celebrates ten years of lobbying for blood safe donation and blood products globally. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has adopted the slogan, “Give the gift of life: donate blood” which focuses on raising awareness about the need for blood donations and safe blood. To donate blood donors must: weigh 50

kg or more, be between 16-65 years old, be in good health and lead a sexually safe lifestyle. The entire blood donation process takes approximately thirty minutes. Studies show that eight out of every ten people will need donated blood at some point in their life. Only less than 1% of the fifty million South Africans donate blood. A single unit of blood can save up to three lives. A brand new sterile needle is used for every donation and discarded through incineration afterwards. Who benefits from donated blood? 27 % general medical cases (blood cancer treatment, HIV, anaemia treatments etc); 26 % women who lose blood during childbirth and gynaecological procedures; 21% scheduled operations; 10 % paediatric cases (surgery, infants, children, adolescents and young adults); 6% orthopaedic cases (treatment of musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumours, and congenital disorders); 6 % research; 4% trauma cases (road accidents etc). According to Tzaneen Cluster police spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the police caught the suspects during their normal patrol duties. Police bust illegal gambling hall The illegal online gambling café in the heart of Tzaneen that was exposed by the Bulletin on 8 May (see front page above), has finally been shut down. The Limpopo gambling board assisted by the Tzaneen SAPS busted the illegal gambling café on Friday. The police arrested three employees and 34 gamblers. The 34 gamblers each paid a fine of R200. Three employees appeared in the Tzaneen magistrate’s court and were released on R1 000 bail. Lesly Heidger (36), Dimakatso Ramathoka (27) and Khomotso Ramadi (26) will appear in the Tzaneen magistrate’s court again on 28 July. During the arrest Ramadi said they were not aware that the business was illegal.” We are struggling at home and we need to provide for our families.” The police confiscated all the property belonging to the Internet Entertainment

The remains of four slaughtered heads of butchered cattle recovered by the police during the arrest can be seen in this photo.

Village haunted by witchcraft OLD

Fears of evil haunt the residents of Mnghonghoma near Giyani, after the discovery of a ritual site where two chickens were apparently dosed with methylated spirit and burned alive to appease or evoke evil deeds. The site was discovered near the local cemetery by two women while on their way to fetch firewood in the bush. “When I first saw the chickens I wondered who could do a thing like that. I thought it was an ordinary scene until we saw more chickens and burned candles next to it, indicating that it was a ritual scene,” said Grace Manyike one of the two women who discovered the scene. The scene has evoked fears that whoever performed the ritual was aiming to kill somebody in the village. The question left unanswered was who the victim might be. “A doll always symbolises a person in many ritual instances, and in this case, the doll that is here next to one of the chickens symbolises the person that this ritual is intended to harm,” explained another resident Tinyiko Ngoveni, saying they were worried because the law does not recognise witchcraft. The villagers decided that they would take the matter to the headman so that a meeting would be called to address the issue of witchcraft, which is said to be rife in the village.

NEW

A grave tour through Tzaneen’s cemeteries Beer cans, garbage bags and plastic takeaway containers carpet the dusty ground of the most forgotten cemetery in Tzaneen. The old cemetery, containing graves dating back to the early 1900’s, hides behind the BP filling station and a used car dealer in Sapekoe Drive in the CBD. The burial ground has been so neglected over the decades that some of the concrete walls have eventually caved in around it and the holes in the walls are left uncovered — leaving space for trespassers to enter and hide out at night. A few garbage bags are scattered at the entrance. A tree has sprouted from one of the graves and most of the concrete slabs covering the graves have deteriorated and collapsed. Some graves are completely covered with dirt and household refuse, making them even less visible. One of the corners of the yard is used as a dumping site for taxi commuters who care-

lessly throw empty cans and bottles over the walls onto the premises. It is a horrific sight reflecting utter disregard and disrespect. The Bulletin then stopped at the cemetery next to the show grounds. This cemetery is somewhat better maintained and rather greener than the first. Here and there a tombstone has fallen over, a shrub has grown over a grave or a tree has taken root and managed to push a tombstone over. It also looks like metal (copper?) letters (used for inscriptions) have been stolen from some of the tombstones. But on the other side of town a beautifully maintained lane

of trees welcomes visitors to the cemetery next to the New Industrial area. It has a much more peaceful atmosphere and is clearly well maintained. Neat rows of graves line the lush lawn and a memorial wall is seen at the one end. The difference between the cemeteries is very obvious and begs the question why one cemetery is so well cared for while another is completely neglected. The acting manager of parks and cemeteries (who is apparently in charge of maintaining the three cemeteries in town) was not allowed to speak to us directly, but only through the GTM’s communication department. On our final deadline (after two weeks) on Tuesday afternoon, the GTM finally released a rather empty statement blaming the state of the old cemetery on an “expired contract”. Ons Mening

Vrydag 07 Junie 2013

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church

Two wrongs don’t make a right!

Letters • Briewe Another scam Stephan J Honiball writes: I glady pass this article on to you for publication, since it is of paramount importance to take cognisance of what is happening about toll roads. Toll roads are to be implemented nationwide. Finish and klaar. This is not just a Gauteng concern, every province is targeted for tolls. It seems to be another scam on us all for the enrichment of a few. Consider… 1) To fund the road costs by way of a small addition to the fuel levy would cost absolutely nil in collection fees. Nada, zilch! 2) The proposed tolls collection costs amount to nearly 40% of what you will pay under tolling. 40% versus nothing. Where is the reasoned thinking? 3) The collection fees (R5 billion a year) goes offshore to Austria, far from the auditor general’s reach and oversight powers. Petrol levies stay in S.A. and are audited. 4) R5 billion exported impoverishes us all. Our current account is already disastrous. R5 billion is the equivalent of just twenty new Zuma seraglios, but is still a klomp geld Wayne Duvenage says we already collect R40 billion p.a. in fuel levies, much more than we need to sustain decent road structures. Tolls are just another disguised tax like A.D.T., private schools and Discovery, paying for services which you have already paid for with your tax buck. For-profit taxies are exempt from tolls, we producers still have to pay. Our Lords and Masters are dead scared of the taxies. So, I guess, are we all! Daily we read of the huge financial scams being perpetrated on us by our scurvy elected Lords and Masters. Daily. Huge amounts and no one is ever brought to account. We are punch drunk and feel powerless. We know that this latest scheme is like the others. We know why they will not release the contract details, and are united in gatvolheid. Toll road disobedience is our chance to fight back! And no one gets to bleed for a change. You can simply suck it up (again) or fight back. A very simple solution is at hand. It will

cost you nothing, give you immense satisfaction and screw those scumbags who wish to accumulate huge offshore bank accounts at your expense. Do not register for e-toll tags. Registering is not a legal requirement. If you do not register they have to send you an account, 300 thousand accounts a day, 10 billion accounts per year, 10 billion! Quite impossible, and the scam will collapse. Then query your account! What fun. They will have to send you a photo of every toll you have passed through, maybe 20 billion in total. Then argue that it was not you but a cloned licence plate. Demand proof that you were the driver. With individual identification. Demand that their ‘letters of demand’ are sent by registered post. Oh! The cost, the cost, the cost! Defend the case if you have time, but it will never reach that stage, the logistics and costs would be too overwhelming for the possible scamsters to contemplate. Insist, in writing, that the guy in charge of the camera attend the court, then pay your R15 due the day before trial. Over 20 years there is perhaps R160 billion at stake here, many times that when every province is targeted. R160 billion of your, my and South Africa’s money, possibly diverted to crooks (they will not disclose the contracts which divulge where and to whom the toll fees are to be paid, so we cannot know). Sincerely, if you are tired of being a milch cow, tired of seeing your hard worked for earnings being ripped off for the benefit of a few connected yobboes, tired of being scammed, Do not buy an e-tag, they cannot lock you up, cannot begin to fight us all, cannot hope to win. Remember, the more draconian they get in trying to extort money from you, the more they will lose at the polls, and losing power is something they cannot afford as it would deny them the unlimited power of plunder they now enjoy. We will win for a change, and won’t that be satisfying !

Trust. I think that this is one of the most difficult expectations we have or want from others. It is not easy to trust when you read and see what is happening around you. The world seems to be falling apart. South Africa seems to be on a decline that is getting more and more slippery. We hear about rapes, farm murders, family murders, discord within families, divorce and just a general state of mayhem that abounds. Then someone says to you “trust me”. It is a human trait to query if this trust will be well founded or if it is just another idle promise. One thing I know for definite is that there is one person you can trust and this person will always come through for you, and that is our Lord Jesus Christ. Yet people often say that we trust in Him but cannot rightly see how He comes through for us. Chronic pain suffers, those who have illness where there is at present no known cure for can right say, “we have asked God repeatedly to cure us, but up to now we do not see any results. How can we trust God?” This is an answer which most of us will have no reply to. I believe that God definitely has a plan and that in His time and not ours all will be revealed. We will only know why when we meet Him face to face one day. I know God always keeps His promises. He also gives some of us instruction on what to do, but often we fail to carry out this instruction, thinking that we are worthy to do them. It is amazing who God choose to do these things for Him and perhaps it might just be the one we least trust whom God has called, or should I put it another way. God may call on someone we would never think of as being “religious” or someone who in their past or by the actions at pre-sent seem not to be trusted. Now I know there may be some out there who read this and misinterpret what I say, thinking that I am gunning from them to accept each and everyone they know or come across. However, trusting in God will show you who the right person is and then you can disregard the false prophets — those who are out there to harm you, by thought, word and deed. Be strong in your belief in Jesus and trust in Him, do not lend your ears to those who are out there to confuse you. Pray continuously and learn to trust God more and more each day. Blessings

‘I try to forget about the past and look forward to what is still coming’ Basani Ngobeni is another remarkable young achiever/entrepreneur from our area. We introduce her in today’s contribution in our exclusive series about local achievers/en-

trepreneurs, presented weekly by Amelia de Ridder. If you want to nominate a young achiever/ entrepreneur (under 35), send the person’s details to amelia@bulletin.us.com.

Basani Ngobeni knows failure. But she also knows how to have faith and hope — and to speak excellent English. Despite the many storms life has blown her way, the 23 year-old has always managed to get back up and inspire others with her stories of survival and success. And she doesn’t just tell her own stories; she also acts as a translator for other women who face stormy weather and struggle to speak the language. Ngobeni, who currently works as a cashier at the new Total filling station in Tzaneen, was recently approached by a Canadian professor, Ms Elizabeth Vibert, who needed a Tsonga/English translator for her research project on rural women who farm in SA. Ngobeni was perfect for the job. She speaks both fluent English and Tsonga. “My mother has always encouraged me to read books and listen to the TV. Even now I still watch Cool Catz and Teletubbies; there is no old

or young English,” she says as she explains how she had gradually improved her English over the years. The young girl from a small village near Letsitele didn’t give up after she failed Gr 11 at Mahwahwa High School. She joined Deeside High School in 2009 where she finally completed Gr 12. A year and a few odd jobs later, Ngobeni joined Xitsavi School where she finished a six week course in computer and life-coping skills. It was here that her teachers recognised her talents and nominated her, along with three others, for an interview for the translating job. She immediately landed it. “My God is a faithful God”, she says. “If you believe and trust Him, He is very faithful.” For two weeks Vibert and Ngobeni visited Joppie Village near Nwamitwa where they interviewed 27 farming women. The women talked about life on farms and gave an insight into their personal lives and difficulties. “I had to listen very attentively and translate every single sentence and word. It was difficult to change some of the deep Tsonga words into English”. “It is, however, inspiring to see what those women’s farms look like. They have a natural knowledge that is not from any book. They tell you what is on their mind, not what they have read.” With the help of Ngobeni, Vibert had fin-

ished her book on these women. She has also send Ngobeni a chapter from the book called: The Thinking Garden: The women’s farm at Joppie. Ngobeni is familiar with life in a village. She stays in Nkambako Village with her mother, three brothers and two sisters. Her five siblings still go to school and completely depend on their sister for financial support. “Luckily we don’t have to pay school fees, but whenever my siblings need books and stationery, I have to pay for it.” She also pays for food and clothes. Her mother doesn’t work and sells cosmetics on a part-time basis. “It is easy for me to take care of them — I have been doing it for four years now”, she answers when I ask her whether she finds it difficult to support herself and six other people. “I am used to it.” She had to learn to get used to it. Her father abandoned them about four years ago and he hasn’t supported them financially since then. “It was difficult when he walked out. He was a helpful and funny man and I enjoyed life with him. He used to help me with my homework, especially Afrikaans.” After he left, Ngobeni was left with the responsibility of finishing the house that they had started to build. “It is still a struggle as the house still needs doors and a floor.” She says that she has to differentiate between what she wants and what her family needs. “I prioritise and divide the money I earn between the house, food and travelling to work and

Bulletin

7

back.” She spends around 45 minutes driving to work in the morning and another 45 minutes to drive back home. In the mornings she makes use of taxis but during the nights she has no other choice than to hitchhike. “It’s scary”, she admits. “But I can’t afford to stay closer to work; it’s too expensive living in town.” She plans on going back to school to finish her Gr 12 with better marks. Once she has saved up enough money, she wants to study law and become a magistrate. “When I can see that my family has enough money to survive for a year — I can go study”. At a young age, Ngobeni had already decided what life she had wanted to lead. “I didn’t want to spend my life hanging around in streets or going to bars. I like to spend my money doing good, not partying.” Her life was completely touched when she received the news that she might not survive last year. She was several weeks pregnant when doctors realised that the infant had not attached properly. Ngobeni suffered severe bleeding that had put her life in great danger. “I try to forget about the past and look forward to what’s still coming”, she says. “Whenever the wind comes, I have to bow down. And when it has passed, I get back up again and work.”

Do you have what it takes to be the Face of Tzaneng Mall 2013? All young girls in Tzaneen and surrounding areas are being called to be part of the biggest youth development modelling competition that Limpopo has ever seen! Get a free photo shoot by entering for this ambitious initiative by Katryn Barwise (last year’s Miss Limpopo and currently a regional finalist for Miss Earth SA 2013) and the Tzaneng Mall. Take part and enjoy the opportunity to grow as a person and also to make a difference in the process! Create awareness with a group for Re-using, Reducing and Recycling, to contribute to a greener earth! This is a great opportunity for local girls to pursue a professional modelling career by being the Face of Tzaneng Mall. The winner will enjoy a modelling contract for one year, and an opportunity to be part of Tzaneng Mall’s marketing campaign — by appearing on posters, other marketing material etcetera. This is not just an ordinary pageant: the

winner chosen for the marketing campaign will also be paid and the promotion will offer a platform for young girls to succeed in the modelling industry. The photo shoot’s theme, sponsored for all entrants, is: ‘Green Earth’ and each girl will use this as a guideline to choose her outfit to raise awareness for Tzaneen to Go Green! Each entrant will also get the opportunity to raise funds for recycling etc, by having them purchase a Miss Earth SA merchandise item which promotes green living. This is optional and entrants can use this as a way to show how much they care for mother earth. Exhibition space will be available in the mall for businesses who would like to take part in this promotion. Info: Katryn on 078 371 0909. The closing date for entries is 13 June and the pageant as well as the photo shoot will take place on 15 June. Entry forms (available only in Bulletin) should be submitted to the organiser (Katryn Barwise) or may be handed in at the offices of the Tzaneng Mall or the Bulletin.

“I have the best ‘slap’ chips in the whole country” “I have the best slap chips in the country,” says Zigi Brits (46) of Harvest Take Away at 45A Agatha Street. Harvest Take away is an insignificant shop compared with the imposing car dealers and the sprawling Tzaneen municipality on the other side of the road. Seated on the curb stone, chalking on the blackboard, is bohemian artist Jonathan Scott. His parents owned the defunct Tzaneen drive-in. Outside are also two mopeds. These are used for free home deliveries within the Tzaneen area. Inside is a table that seats eight people, Zigi behind the till, a small kitchen and four staff members. Zigi says his slap chips are not mass produced. He buys fresh out the soil potatoes on a daily basis from his supplier, Thobela. The potatoes are peeled throughout the day and he orders thirty bags a week. When he took over Harvest Take Away three years ago potatoes cost R25 a bag. They’re now up to R60 a bag. His special of

For real English fish and chips, visit Waterston’s Müller spent about five years in the food industry in Tzaneen, starting as a waiter at Spur and working his way up, later joining the staff at Galito’s and Ocean Basket. The smell of chips and russians from the Waterston’s Local Chippi in Tzaneen has been tempting locals since they opened in March. Waterston’s Local Chippi is situated opposite Checkers in the old Checkers centre and specialises in fish and chips. “The recipe is from the UK. Which makes our fish and chips a rare find in this area,” says owner, Gustav Müller. Müller and his fiancé (and co-owner), Leighan Waterston, spent some time in the United Kingdom and fell in love with it. They decided to use a UK theme for the shop, with the flag being incorporated in the logo and photos of London displayed in a strip on the walls.

Thank YOU!

Afrigter, me Telanie Grobler.

Aanhou, boetie! Life is tough, but it’s tougher when you’re stupid. - John Wayne

Vossies Bo! 7 June 2013

Maiden win for Moosa

Team TOTAL’s Mohammed Moosa tackled the third round of the prestigious 2013 SA National Rally Championship in and around Bapsfontein. Contesting the Toyota Gauteng Dealer Rally, Moosa and codriver Andre Vermeulen took their Toyota Auris S2000 rally machine to sixth position overall and a maiden win in Class. Competing in Class S2000 Challenge, for older specification Super 2000 rally cars, Moosa pushed his factory-backed rivals through each of the event’s ten timed stages. The Tzaneen entrepreneur performed faultlessly over the rough and narrow gravel tracks that zigzagged through the mielie fields, to post a string of consistently top ten stage times — but a mishap on the final stage nearly saw his efforts come to nil. Moosa and Vermeulen had a spectacular accident on the final stage, in front of thousands of

spectators, causing the car to roll a couple of times. Quick thinking marshals quickly pushed the car back onto its wheels and the team were able to finish. The class lead margin was substantial before going into the stage and the team were still able to win the class by ten seconds, despite the accident. “It was a bittersweet conclusion to this rally, having extensive damage to my rally car but still claiming the Class S2000 Challenge victory. As we reflect on this past weekend’s event, great steps forward have been made in the understanding of the car’s performance capabilities and where we can exploit its strengths even more. I’m happy with my performance, if you can ignore the last stage incident. “We’ll be looking to add more Class wins to our season campaign in Port Elizabeth’s upcoming Volkswagen Rally in July in the Eastern Cape,” Moosa said.
