renosters gevind is.

Net plein, kommin menslike stupidgeit!
Donners onmoontlik, dink Vlieg!

Rabies claims another life The Limpopo Department of Health has issued a warning to residents of Limpopo — especially in Vhembe and Mopani — to immediately seek help when bitten or scratched by a domestic or wild animal that is suspected of being rabid. This comes after one death due to rabies in the Malamulele area, bringing the number of rabies deaths to four in Limpopo since April 2013. The incidence of Human Rabies in Limpopo is approximately three deaths per financial year and most of the deaths are reported from Vhembe. Rabies is a prevalent and re-emerging disease, particularly in rural areas with high human densities. It is caused by the rabies virus. Once the virus has entered the body, it enters peripheral nerves and is carried towards the brain. The virus multiplies in the brain, causing brain dysfunction and ultimately death. The main challenge remains the issue of ignorance. People do not seek medical attention soon enough.
The Department of Agriculture is currently conducting free community vaccinations of pets in Limpopo. Domestic pets must be vaccinated regularly. Dogs and cats should be vaccinated at three months of age, with a booster at nine months, and then every three years afterwards. Avoid stray animals, animals that are behaving strangely or that appear sick. Wild animals may appear unusually tame.

Not only are blueberries healthy, but they are also an incredibly versatile ingredient that can add a touch of elegance to a variety of meals. They work well in desserts, baking, salads, sauces and are great when paired with steak, pork and venison. The berries are grown to strict organic standards. The farmer uses natural composting and vermiculture techniques to improve the vitality of the blueberry bushes.

Berry Festival again a success More than 700 people flocked to Blueberry Heights, a farm on the outskirts of Haenertsburg, over the past weekend to take part in the annual Berry Festival. According to Mr Jonathan Trusler the event was hosted by the Magoebaskloof Tourist Association as a tourist attraction. The fun-filled weekend started on Valentine’s Day with a dinner in the community hall. Saturday visitors had the opportunity to visit the organic cheese farm, pick blueberries and raspberries or visit the market. The weekend ended with a fun run through the magical forests. New ANC boss in Lim Limpopo premier Stanley Mathabatha was elected as ANC Provincial Chairman (uncontested) during the provincial conference held at the University of Limpopo. The man who was supposed to oppose him, Mr Dickson Masemola, withdrew his nomination. Mr Jerry Ndou was elected as deputy chairman (he defeated Mr Joe Maswanganyi). Mr Nocks Seabi (secretary), Mr Makoma Rasekgala (deputy secretary) and Ms Thembi Ngwendamuni (treasurer) were also elected. Amongst the 25 additional members elected to serve in the PEC)of the ANC are the former provincial secretary, Mr Soviet Lekganyane, Mr Joe Maswanganyi , Dr Falaza Mdaka, Mr Danny Msiza and Mr Lehlogonolo Masoga. The previous executive committee under the chairmanship of Mr Cassel Mathale, was dis-
banded in March last year and replaced with a provincial task team (PTT). In 2001 the executive committee under the chairmanship of former Limpopo premier Ngoako Ramatlhodi, was also disbanded. “We will continue to work together to re-unite the organizations which was torn apart by infighting,” Mathabatha said after he had been elected. The election of the suspended CEO of Limpopo Tourism and Parks, Mr Nocks Seabi, caused eyebrows to raise, because the ANC previously said that no member of the party will be elected in higher posts or in the committee structure of the organization if he/she was still facing charges. Seabi was suspended last year after allegations of financial mismanagement. —Michael Sakuneka

The pageant saw the crowning of 21-year-old Mahlatsi Modjadji and 17-year-old Vulani Thuketana, as the first ever Miss and Miss Teen Greater Tzaneen Royal Nobility. Modjadji, who is studying Human Resource Management and Financial Technical Accounting at Boston City Campus, was awarded a R20 000 bursary from Boston City Campus towards her studies. The young woman from Lenyenye Village says she is happy to have won the pageant and is looking forward to performing her role in the community. All winners, including the runners-up for the Nobility title, Jinah Makumbila (20) and Zanele Machimana (19) — and the Teen Nobility title, Minkateko Mabuza (15) and Nsovo Manzini (17) — will work with Baloyi
on her RoleModel projects. Baloyi has been tasked and hopes to give back to her community and the country at large. The pageant was among projects and initiatives she developed to fulfill her role. According to her, her other projects include a monthly food parcel distribution to destitute families and a sanitation project aimed to build at least twelve toilets for communities without facilities in the area. She also plans to build a pre-school and afternoon care centre for children in less privileged areas. For their first task, the pageant winners must identity destitute families for the food parcel distribution project. Thuketana, a Gr 12 pupil from Ben Vorster High School, says she is also looking forward to performing her duties as the teen winner of the pageant. She hopes to pass matric with great results and go on to study clinical psychology. — Joy Mojela joy@bulletin.us.com

While some people DJ for money, Ms Dyondzo Shikwambani of Makhuva in Giyani, the first professional female DJ in Mopani, does it for the love of music. Ons dink nogal nie so nie!

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Tzaneen It is about time that we as Christians reclaim what is rightfully ours! For too long we have bent over backwards to accommodate others. Other religions do not take lightly the way people portray them and yes they even get violent about it. I wonder if there still exist a truly Christian school, in our country? We are forced by the laws of the land to accommodate those of other religions in our schools and are told that we can no longer pray to Christ as we might upset the other religions. I say nonsense to all this. If I choose to send my children to a school I must abide by its principals, I may not believe in those principals and have a choice to seek education elsewhere. Often the excuse is that there are no other schools with such good results as this school. Then I must comply with what is laid down. If I don’t like religious instruction or it is not my religious belief, then I can asked to be excused and go and sit somewhere and do whatever I would like to do. Claiming back our Christianity must of course first start with me as a person, if my relationship with God is right then I can move onto my family, my friends, my neighbourhood, my town, my province and my country. Step by step we can all change what is so wrong in this beautiful country and who knows the world. But we need desperately to start. Blessings
Stanford’s headmaster writes for an important skills development book Congratulations to Mr Craig Carolan, the Headmaster of Stanford Lake College, on his recent work on Independent Thinking skills being published last week. Carolan who is also a Thinking Skills specialist, was asked by
Prof Lena Green of the University of the Western Cape to write a chapter in a ground-breaking textbook ‘Schools as Thinking Communities’ that she was editing. The text book provides a comprehensive framework of Thinking Skills for PGCE students and educators alike. The book brings together cutting edge educational theory from authors throughout the world, who believe that the main focus of schools should be to develop students’ independent thinking skills. Carolan penned the chapter on the Edward de Bono Thinking Skills along with Ms Debby Evans. As a Master Trainer of the de Bono Thinking Skills, which include ‘The Six Thinking Hats’ as well as the CoRT Critical and Creative Tools, Carolan is well placed to share his expertise in this field with experience of both the Unit-
ed Kingdom and SA educational systems, where he has shared his knowledge of the Thinking Skills with over a hundred schools and companies. He is also a qualified psychologist, an NLP trainer and a ‘Thinking Schools South Africa’ senior trainer, who believes that by teaching students these thinking skills we are enabling them to become self-referent, self-confident, lifelong learners. In his short time at Stanford Carolan has also overseen the introduction of a formal Thinking Skills programme at the College which involves developing all Stanford students’ Critical and Creative thinking skills. When asked about the importance of these skills Carolan stated, “As schools in the current educational and economic climate it is crucial that we, as educators, teach our students how to critically analyse and evaluate the in-
formation available to them. With the bombardment of information available to them through the media and the internet, it is no longer sufficient for our students to merely memorize facts. “We need to teach our students to be critical of all information they are faced with as well as to develop the skills to think creatively about how they deal with this information. “By being able to do this our students will be prepared for the unknown world they will face once they leave school. In the end, the main job of any teacher is
to produce self-confident, wellequipped learners,” Carolan said.

80!
David Hilton-Barber of Agatha is turning 80 in July. Mentally and physically fit, this wellknown figure in the Lowveld is about to publish his third book. Sue Ettmayr spent time with him over a cup of coffee, to be able to present something of his life and work for Bulletin’s exclusive series about our senior citizens. David Hilton-Barber will be remembered from his days at Kings Walden in Agatha outside Tzaneen where he ran the exclusive guest house with his late wife Tana. It was her family farm and also the inspiration for David’s first book, a self-published historical account of the people and events that fashioned the Tzaneen area called Footprints. The research took 25 years and Footprints was first published in 2010. He printed only a few hundred copies and soon sold out. Footprints was republished by ‘30 Degrees South’, well-known publishers of historical works, in Pinetown last year. It was also a short print run that was sold out just as rapidly. Footprints is going into its third reprint, again with modest print runs. David says, “Guests were always interested in the history of Kings Walden. My wife was a born Tooley. Her father, Bill, came here from Kings Walden in Hertfordshire in 1904. He was the first farmer to grow citrus in the area. So the research began.” Hilton-Barber also published a booklet on Haenertsburg using village extracts from Footprints. The cover photograph of Eben-
ezer Dam with flowers in the foreground was taken by villager Jane Moncreiff. He published another book last year called The Baronet and The Matabele King. It’s a historical book on the gold mined at Tati, a story that’s never been told. The golden rhino at the historical site of Mapungubwe was probably fashioned from gold mined at Tati. Later this year David publishes his third book Kalahari Dreaming. It’s a whimsical anthology of a series of profiles of people and interesting facts about the Kalahari. He’s also going on a writer’s course to Marbella in Second published book Spain for a week in June. David studied for his BA and then honours in English at Rhodes University. His friend, John Gordon Davis, who studied law also at Rhodes, now lives in Spain and is a full time
successful writer. David says, “I haven’t written any fiction and that’s his speciality. John holds several courses a year at his converted Spanish farmhouse on the outskirts of Marbella.” David, a fifth generation South African, was born in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. After university he trained as a journalist with the Argus Group and was a reporter in Zimbabwe and Zambia. He relocated to Johannesburg where he became involved in public relations for more than two decades. He and Tana moved to Tzaneen in 1989. When Tana became ill, the couple retired from Kings Walden. They moved to the farm Hunter’s Moon next to the Coach House Hotel in Agatha. Kings Walden was leased to a Belgian couple for a few years but has now come back into the family.

Hilton-Barber attributes his good health to a healthy lifestyle. He played a lot of social sport, mainly squash, in his day and went on many hikes with the Haenertsburg Hiking Club with the late village hikers John Murray (Duke of Atholl) and Secondo Rech. He now hikes with his daughter Bridget, who’s also a published author. David also walks daily with his ten-year-old Dalmatian named Congo. He enjoys drinking wine and two years ago joined a lad’s lunch group. The group of ten have lunch at a different restaurant every Wednesday. They enjoy each other’s company while eating and drinking a few bottles of wine. David likes travelling and spends many hours researching for his books. He writes for local and international media on conservation and local government. — Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com

How to grow a kitchen herb garden Compiled by Roelien Vorster

Dealing with dust mites Compiled by Roelien Vorster
One of the nicest things about herb gardening is that you don’t need much space. A formal herb garden is lovely, but you can fit a few pots in anywhere. Probably the most popular herbs to grow and use are the culinary herbs. Herbs used for cooking and seasoning can be incorporated into your existing flower or vegetable beds, grown separately near the kitchen door or kept handy on the kitchen counter.Growing culinary herbs is very similar to growing vegetables. The two most important considerations are to harvest at full flavor and to never use any fertilizer or pesticide on them that isn’t labeled for use on edible plants. Here are some more tips for growing flavorful culinary herbs. Planting and growing Annual herbs are inexpensive and easy to start from seed. Woody, perennial herbs establish better if you purchase seedlings or take cuttings. Plant your herbs in a rich, well-draining soil and avoid heavy feeding with supplemental fertilizer. The scent and flavor of herbs tends to concentrate when they are grown
in slightly lean conditions. (Going to the extreme and starving them or growing them in poor soil will have the opposite effect. The plants will be stressed and stunted.) Limit pesticide use to an absolute minimum. If you must spray, use the least toxic solution. Design considerations Keep them handy. You will use them more often if they are within easy reach. And their beauty and scent will probably inspire your cooking creativity. Culinary herbs can do double duty as ornamental plants. Parsley, especially the curly variety, makes a wonderful edging plant, if you don’t have rabbits nearby. Tall herbs, like bay laurel, can be potted and used as focal points. Herbs with variegated leaves, like golden or tri-color sage, are great accents in mixed containers. Don’t let the notion that these are seasoning herbs limit your use of them. Herbs that tend to spread, like mint and oregano, can be grown in containers. The containers can be sunk into the ground, in the garden, or used as accent pots. Just don’t let the tips of the plants hang over and touch the ground or they will root and grow. Using culinary herbs Most annual herbs taste their best before they flower. Once the annual herbs flower, the older leaves begin to decline and new leaves are smaller and bitter.Pinch and use often. Even young plants need to be pinched back to encourage them to branch out and become full. Annual herbs, like basil, can be pinched when they are three to four centimetres tall. If herb plants begin setting flowers in earnest, shear back the whole plant by one-quarter and try to start using them more frequently.

Dust mites can be really problematic, especially in those households with allergysufferers. Unlike spiders, dust mites feed on a combination of dead skin and other small food particles. Although it is virtually impossible to eradicate them 100%, there are a number of things that can be done to reduce their numbers. Using a combination of these methods is the most effective treatment for dust mites. The house dust mite is thought to be the leading cause of asthma and other allergy symptoms. These pests are not insects, but arachnids — and are closely related to the spider. However, unlike spiders, they do not eat living creatures, but rather feed on a combination of dead skin and other small food particles. When vacuuming, concentrate on those areas that are well-known to be favourite breeding grounds for dust mites. Dust in the home is primarily composed of dead skin, which is shed by people and pets at an extraordinary rate, so dust mites will flourish in dusty places. Those sensitive to dust mites will exhibit allergic symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, trouble breathing, watery eyes and skin irritation. People who are responsive to dust mites are not allergic to the mites themselves, but rather their faeces and discarded exoskeletons. Since dust mites thrive in warm, humid environments, controlling your home’s overall temperature and humidity is a good place to start ridding your home of mites.

Installing an air-conditioner is a great solution — you can use it to keep the humidity levels, in and around your home, lower than 35% and the temperature should be kept at 21 degrees Celsius or lower for optimum dust mite control. Another great defence against dust mites is keeping your home as dust-free as possible. Start by first removing any long-standing dust and wiping down all the hard surfaces in your home, including the tops of shelves, books, window sills, doors and cupboards, under furniture, and so on. Once you have wiped these hard surfaces down, clean them with a damp cloth and solution containing either bleach or ammonia. Now you can start vacuuming — concentrating on those areas that are especially well-known to be favourite nesting and breeding grounds for dust mites. These include rugs and carpets, beds and bedding, sofas and soft furnishings, curtains, drapes and clothing. It is important to use a vacuum cleaner that will capture all the contaminants without shooting them back out and spreading them even further around your home. The vacuum cleaner should have a dust bag to effectively contain the dirt, and a HEPA air filtration system that will capture all the contaminants and remove them from the air while emitting clean, dust-free air back into the atmosphere. Doing the laundry is an essential part of dust mite control — everything that can be laundered in your home should be.

ANTS BE GONE
Do you have an ant problem? Inside your home or out? This will get rid of them….. Ant killer mixture One empty water bottle (cut it down to about five centimetres) Five tablespoons of baking soda 5 tablespoons of powdered sugar (icing sugar) 3 tablespoons of water Method Take a small amount of icing sugar and mix it with an equal amount of baking soda (formally called sodium bicarbonate) and water. Powdered sugar is essential. You cannot use the larger grains of sugar. Place small amounts of this mixture against the walls and other areas where you
would not normally walk, but where you would normally see the ants. The ants will be attracted to the sugar. They will eat some of it and collect more to take home to feed the others. The sugar and baking soda powders are similar in size and, once mixed together, the ants cannot separate the two items. So, as they eat the sugar they will also eat the baking soda which they would otherwise never touch. This is the reason for using powdered sugar. Once the ants eat the baking soda, it will react with the formic acid in their stomachs and cause gas. The bodies of ants cannot eliminate gas so it will build up inside and eliminate the ant. — Roelien Vorster

Making ends meet with wire craft “Unemployment has forced me to use my craftsman skills to start a business,” says Mr George Ushamba, a Zimbabwe citizen who sells wire toys outside Park Butchery in Tzaneen. He started his business in Zimbabwe in 2005. He explained how he was stricken with poverty and unemployment and did not have the means to take care of his family. “When I was younger, my friends and I played with wire by creating different objects,” said Ushamba. He used his craft skills he developed as a young boy to make toys. He sold the toys in his hometown in order to provide for his family and to make ends meet. According to Ushamba, most of his costomers in Zimbabwe were white people. However, when they left Zimbabwe due to political unrest, his business went downhill rapidly. In 2007, Ushamba came to South Africa
to find new costomers. With permission from the owner of Park Butchery, Ushamba displays and sells his crafts outside from 07:00 to 17:00. He makes enough money to meet his basic needs and to send to his family in Zimbabwe. Ushamba said he hopes to display and sell his goods in an area that is more visible to Tzaneen residents and tourists, but he also fears that displaying his art in a more visible place will attract criminals. — Joy Mojela joy@bulletin.us.com

Lay your head on my pillow Compiled by Roelien Vorster source: www.health.com
Be sure you have a comfortable bed pillow to rest your head on as you hopefully spend about one third of your day and night in bed sleeping. With so many choices on the market, you might be stumped about what type of bed pillow will give you the best night’s rest. Decide on the Right Size of Bed Pillow The size of bed pillow you pick will depend on the size of your bed and how you sleep. For a twin, you’d probably choose a standard pillow. For a queen bed you’d get two queens, and for a king bed you’d get two king pillows. If you prefer a large pillow to snuggle with on a smaller bed, use a king on a twin bed. Or if you want a stack of large pillows to lean on, you’ll get more. Set Your Bed Pillow Budget Like everything, you can pay a lot or a little for a bed pillow. And you usually get what you pay (or don’t pay) for. A cheap foam pillow might cost as little as $5 but a top quality down or feather pillow can be over $100, depending on the size. If you have a limited budget, select one or two good quality pillows to actually sleep on and use an inexpensive one for leaning up against for reading or for decoration with a sham on your bed. Do You Sleep on Your Back, Your Side, or Your Stomach? If you sleep on your back, you might want a flat bed pillow. If you sleep on your side or your stomach, you’ll want good support for your neck. Most quality pillows give information about the best use for the type of pillow you’re considering. Choose the Fill You Prefer for Your Pillow
After size, the next most important thing to decide is what type of fill you want. A foam pillow will feel firm and hold its shape throughout the night, even when you shift on the bed. A down pillow will squish with your head and give it a soft cushion. You can crumple it up for snuggling. Something right in the middle would be a pillow made with polyester filling. And a good quality compromise might be a pillow with a core of foam or feathers, surrounded or wrapped with an outer coat of soft down. Most top quality feather and down pillows are hypo-allergenic and can be used by people with allergies. Do You Like a Soft or Firm Bed Pillow? The “loft” of a bed pillow is determined by the volume of fill it contains. For a firm pillow, the fill will be tighter. For a soft pillow, the fill will be lighter. Regardless of the firmness, be prepared to renovate the feather or down fill every 10 years or so. And of course, foam disintegrates or breaks down. Bed Pillow Cover or Ticking The cover on a foam bed pillow is not too important. But for a feather or down pillow, be sure that the ticking or cover is tightly woven cotton so that the feathers don’t leak out. Buy a pillow cover for every pillow you own. This will keep the ticking clean and protect the pillow cover. Care for Years of Comfort It’s important to clean a bed pillow regularly. The pillow should come with care instructions. Some feather and down pillows can be washed in a home washer. Others recommend dry cleaning.

No pain, no stain
Always read the clothing label to make sure you don’t apply an ill-advised product or wash it in a way that could damage it. Drying or ironing may set the stain permanently. Always use the hottest water allowed for each specific fabric. If the stain remains once

you’ve followed all the steps, repeat the process. Prewashing and pre-soaking can also help. Whenever feasible, soak the stain as long as possible. On white linen and cotton, lemon juice can bleach away stains. However, it can damage colours.

No one was born with the ability to dodge the onslaught of stains that can occur on a daily basis. This is why it is important to know how to remove common stains. Note: After treating the stain, you must always launder the garment as usual. Antiperspirant/deodorant What you need: white vinegar, enzyme detergent, liquid detergent. How to remove it: Soak the stain in white vinegar for 30 minutes. Then, launder the shirt in the warmest possible water for the type of fabric using an enzyme detergent.
Blood
What you need: ammonia, unseasoned meat tenderizer, paper towel. How to remove it: If the stain is fresh, soak the garment in cold water with a sprinkle of ammonia for 20 minutes. If the stain has already set, dampen it with warm water, then apply some unseasoned (this is important) meat tenderizer, making a paste over the stain. Cover this with a paper towel and make sure it stays moist. The next day, rinse off the paste with water mixed with a little bit of ammonia and wash normally.
Coffee
What you need: liquid bleach, peroxide. How to remove it: If you can wash the item right away, regular laundry will work just fine. Also, you can pre-treat the stain with liquid bleach (use colour-safe bleach for coloured clothes) as an extra measure. If that doesn’t work and the fabric is white, mix one part of peroxide with six parts of water and rub it on the stain. Cooking oil/motor oil What you need: liquid detergent, two paper
towels, a warm iron, baby powder, solvent. How to remove it: Once you’ve removed the excess oil, dampen the stain and apply liquid detergent directly onto it. Alternatively, place the stained portion of the garment between two paper towels and apply a warm iron to the area. If you’re not in a hurry, apply baby powder and let it absorb the oil overnight. Grass What you need: stain remover, bleach, detergent, ethanol or methanol, glycerine. How to remove it: If you have stain remover, rub some delicately onto the stain and leave it for five minutes. Using bleach (colour-safe bleach) and detergent, launder normally in hot water. Ink What you need: rubbing alcohol, detergent, hairspray, a dry cloth. How to remove it: Apply rubbing alcohol to the stain and then rub in some detergent. If the stain is still there after a normal wash, do it again. Or, you can put hairspray on the stain and rub it in with a dry cloth before washing normally. Lipstick What you need: stain remover, rubbing alcohol, ammonia, hairspray. How to remove it: Dab the stain with either a stain remover, rubbing alcohol, ammonia, or hairspray. Then, just rinse it off with warm water. Sauce, mustard, ketchup What you need: bleach, detergent, stain remover. How to remove it: Pre-treat the stain with colour-safe bleach and wash with detergent in warm or hot water. If the stain is still there, treat it with stain remover and wash again.

...........................................
