Beware of lies! Last week we warned readers not to believe the “stories” published in the Bulletin, and we promised that we would explain this startling statement today. However, we will all have to wait another week, since the person who made this utterance is still working on the matter. The statement derives from a complaint lodged at the Press Council against the Bulletin, after a certain news report. The matter is still sub judice, so to speak, and we will hopefully be in a position to reveal more about this next week.

Robbers target Sasol

Bullets were flying at the Total filling station in Agatha Road (opposite Ben Vorster High School), Tzaneen, on Monday morning, when an armed robbery was foiled by the police. According to the Police’s Tzaneen cluster commander, Maj Gen Maggie Mathebula, the security guard at the filling station called the Police at about 01:00, when he saw five armed men enter the small convenience store at the filling station. Police arrived within minutes. The robbers apparently tried to shoot their way out and the police officers returned fire. The suspects realised there is no way out.

Vlieg sou so hoop, ja!

Patient transport prohibited from picking up hitch-hikers

‘Hot’ issues cause protests

‘Planned Patient Transport’ (PPT) vehicles are not allowed to pick up members of the public not admitted to a hospital, says the Department of Health and Social Development’s media liaison, Ms Adele van der Linde. Members of the public reported seeing these vehicles giving lifts to hitch-hikers en route. Van der Linde, who said that the drivers of PTT vehicles picking up hitch-hikers are misusing government vehicles, urges members of the public to report such cases to the department’s toll free number, 0800 919191, for action to be taken against the drivers. Incidents should be reported during office hours and reporters should have the time and date of the incident, as well as the registration number of the vehicle, ready to cite. The PPT is a service provided by the department to transfer patients who do not need ambulance services between hospitals in the province. Each district in Limpopo runs its own daily PPT service. Patients are transferred from one hospital to

remove their shoes. There is always a risk that they might fall into the river and drown. During heavy rain they have to remain at home, because the river overflows and there is no way for them to cross. Shortages of clean water in the area were also on the ‘hot issues’ list. Residents are said to have to fetch water from the river with buckets in order to cook meals and do their laundry. Greater Tzaneen Municipality mayor Dikeledi Mmetle attended a community gathering to address the problems. However, an angry group allegedly kept on interrupting her saying they had enough of poor service delivery and feeling neglected. GTM spokesman Neville Ndlala said “we need the residents to be calm so that we can attend to their concerns.” Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe said that the police were deployed to the scene to maintain law and order, until the situation calmed down. —Arnold Mabunda

The body of an unidentified man was discovered by a worker of the Fairview Hotel in Tzaneen, floating upside down in the Greater Letaba river last week. The already decomposing body of the man, seemingly in his forties, was retrieved by police from the fast running water. It seemed as if the body, which was in neat attire, could have floated some distance downstream, before getting stuck among large rocks. Although foul play is not suspected, police are investigating and a post mortem will be held. Photo: De Villiers Booysen

another for consultation with specialists not available in the hospital they were admitted to, specialised operations, CT or MRI scans and radiation therapy for cancer. She stated that all hospitals are fully equipped to handle emergencies and simple procedures. Hospitals are labeled as ‘district’, ‘regional’ or ‘tertiary’ (sometimes called ‘referral’); in which case district hospitals, like Tzaneen’s Van Velden, perform simple procedures and are thus classified as level one hospitals. Regional hospitals like Letaba have more specialists and are classified as level two hospitals. Any procedures or care that cannot be offered at Letaba are referred to Mankweng or Polokwane, which are referral (level three) hospitals. If a specialist is not available in the province, patients are transported to Gauteng for treatment or consultation. In some cases, nurses will accompany patients, but only if recommended by a doctor. — Joy Mojela joy@bulletin.us.com

Recent violent protests in the Tickeyline (Lenyenye) area have been rife since the community, who termed their grievances as “hot issues”, blocked the main roads with rocks and shrubs of trees. Police in Ritavi arrested a 49-year-old man for allegedly raping and impregnating his 14-year-old daughter. According to Police reports the ordeal took place when the mother left them alone at home. Everyone has dirty laundry On Friday night the Tzaneen skies cleared for a magical evening at the beautiful new Waterbessiebos Function Venue in Georges Valley, where Myra Jacqueline Harms (néé Visser) premiered with her One Woman Show “Dirty Laundry”. This cabaret, compiled, directed and performed by Myra herself, deals with the intricate stories of a range of characters with a common ‘dirty laundry’ thread throughout.

Kragdadige optrede is nodig.

Orlando Chauke (who also took the photo) reports that she didn’t shy away from showing her happiness and excitement after she had received her results. She is one of Limpopo’s top pupils and obtained distinctions in Xitsonga, English, mathematics, physical science,

They provided me with the necessary support and study material to help me out during my studies,” she told Bulletin. • The collection of the information pertaining to the matric results was done by Bulletin’s Retha Nel, Beaunice Mnisi, Amelia de Ridder and Martina Jege. * Turn to page 3 for the full details of the matric results of ten high schools in our area.

Hoekom gaan jy elke keer staan?” Die kind antwoord vrolik. “Ek probeer mooi lyk, want God neem foto’s van my.” (Mark.4:38-40). God is by ons.

Convenient Lino de Carvalho writes by e-mail: Please allow me the opportunity of responding to “OUBAL”. I do not have the privilege of knowing him as he prefers to operate/write under a pseudonym (how convenient) so I will just refer to him as “OU-TWAKSAK”. Please feel free to use your name in future.

From all the reaction I received (Facebook, meetings, discussions) I only received three negative comments, one from a prominent local doctor, one from a friend in the UK and the other from “die voorste sportkenner i.e. OU-TWAKSAK). I respect their comments. “OU-TWAKSAK” obviously knows me quite well because he is able to refer to my “duur Duitse motor, produkte op die rake, ens”. I am unable to say anything about “OU-TWAKSAK” so I and the public will make our own deductions on whether he is qualified as “die voorste sportkenner and master of school and parents finances”. “OU-TWAKSAK” chooses to trivialize and make joking comments about something that is seen by many parents as a problem area in our community and that needs to be discussed at school level. He is not the parent that has to scrape his cents together. He is not the child that has to go out and stand with a donation form asking for donations. Is this what we are teaching our kids? that it is good to go out and beg for donations? He is not the teacher who has to battle with insufficient resources. He is not the school who battles to make their budget balance. He is not the businessman who can’t say no to a child standing

in front of him. Are you all of the above “OUTWAKSAK”? What is more important is the positive comments and feedback I received from all quarters, parents, teachers, business sector, even current students, so somewhere my point of view has elicited a positive reaction. I am fortunate that I can and do assist wherever and whenever possible and I thank the community of Tzaneen for this, but this is not about me but about the community of Tzaneen. I agree that sport is beneficial to a child’s education, I agree that a child has to see the world, and I agree with the camaraderie that sport creates, but as with everything in life it has to be done in moderation and it can’t have negative consequences. I feel that my child needs to be educated first and that sport and culture is an accessory to his/ her education and a lot of parents agree. Finally “OU-TWAKSAK”, I am a Shark supporter and my wife is a Blue-Bull supporter. My son (akkertjie) is 5 years old and educated enough to make his own decisions about who he supports (STORMERS) and I respect his choice. He has not been force fed about the blue rugby culture.

• No need to be so sensitive or stinging. There is a distinct difference between news reporting visà-vis feature writing and columns in newspapers and magazines, almost without exception under a pseudonym. Think of Hogarth (Sunday Times), Pollux (Rapport), Blou Willem’s Blouwillemaandag (Beeld), Dr Jani (Citizen) etc. It is an integral part of the entertainment function of newspapers

and magazines worldwide. Column writing is meant to stir, and Oubal represents exactly that. So does Vlieg. On page 2 of our newspaper you will find the name of the publisher and editor-in-chief who, like with all newspapers/magazines, take full responsibility for every single letter in the paper (unless otherwise stated). You thus don’t have to worry about Oubal’s identity, since there is someone taking responsibility. We respect your views and feelings about sport at school level (that’s why we published your letter). We trust that you are equally concerned about the junk food and drinks sold in tuck shops at schools (who can afford that!), expensive school uniforms etcetera. — Publisher

Waltzing the night away in days of yore Today our readers can meet another remarkable lady who played a major role in building the current day Tzaneen community. Our Sue Ettmayr spoke to Ms Rowena Dekenah and she gave us a glimpse of the early days in our area. This is another contribution in our exclusive series about the early days of Tzaneen en the people who played a role in establishing the town and its community.

Ms Rowena Dekenah celebrated her 87th birthday at her townhouse in Arbor Park, Tzaneen, on 29 March. She never invites people for her birthday but family and friends always gather to make her day special. She believes that her longevity is due to her friendly and honest disposition. Dekenah moved with her husband, the late Mr Albert Viljoen Dekenah (nicknamed Albie), to Tzaneen in 1948. Her most memorable times were the dances at Mr Ollie van Wyk’s Casa Danza outside town. The place was so wellknown that people came from as far as Johannesburg. It had a lovely atmosphere. One could buy curry and rice but everyone had to take their own liquor. With a twinkle in her eye, Dekenah says, “I loved to waltz with my husband. We danced well together. He always wore his black suit with a bowtie and I wore long evening dresses. Some I made myself but others were made by the late dressmaker Ms Ann Steyn. I’ve kept all my evening dresses, because they were special and in those days we all wore fur stoles. We also went to dances at the Tzaneen Town Hall.” Dekenah (néé Botha) was born in Uniondale in the Cape. Her parents moved to nearby Harlem when she was still very young. She went to high school in Joubertina and then

to Denneoord College in Stellenbosch, to train as a primary ers, Mr Len Dekenah, retired in 1946. He had been the first school teacher. She registered as a teacher in the Transvaal, qualified teacher to come to the Mopani area in 1917. At his now Gauteng, because her sister was living in Pretoria and farewell party she met the love of her life, Mr Dekenah’s handsome son, Albie. It was love at first sight for both of them. She went to teach at the JCI mine in Gravelotte because Albie was working on the mines and they married in Tzaneen in 1947. Albie’s parents continued staying in Tzaneen after retirement. Albie was transferred to Randfontein in 1948. In April that same year Albie’s mother took ill and asked her only son and his young wife to return to Tzaneen. Dekenah began teaching at Laerskool Tzaneen and stayed there for more than thirty years. Albie joined his mother in the family business situated close to all the other businesses on Danie Joubert Street; a baby shop which mushroomed into general clothing and a linen shop. Dekenah’s mother-in-law’s given names were Anna Sophia but everyone called her Auntie Len Dekenah. Dekenah Street was named after her as she was on the council for a while. She was a good business woman and this was largely attributed to her personality. Dekenah got on very well with her in-laws and they treated her like a daughter. Albie died in 2007 and Dekenah still misses him every day. One of Ms Dekenah’s many tapestries She did a lot of tapestry, sewing and knitting in her day. However she has no feeling in her fingers so can’t do this she wanted to be closer to her. She was given a post at the kind of work anymore. She keeps up with current affairs on then Merensky Farm School in Tzaneen, teaching standard TV but has been very lonely since her husband’s death. She has a son Len, who lives in Tzaneen, and a daughter one pupils. She spent a year at Merensky. One of the Merensky teach- Elann in Pretoria and three grandchildren.

GTM to spend R7 million for new street lights and cables Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s electro-technical engineer, Mr Pierre van den Heever, says the municipality plans to use the Department of Energy’s (DOE) R7 million grant to install new street light cables and more energy efficient lights. Given to the municipality as the DOE’s energy efficient project towards a greener South Africa, Van den Heever explains the grant will alleviate much cost in ridding the street lights’ aged and deteriorating cable lines, as well as his department’s shortage of resources, finances and skills. Over the years, the municipality’s limited budget struggled to keep up with street light and cable maintenance.

Bikes donated to school Modjadjiskloof Spar donated thirty plastic bikes to Pfunanane Academy School outside Modjadjiskloof. Seen in the photo are Mss Jean-Marie Meyer (Gr R teacher), Marise Jordaan (Principal) and Mr Nick Wright (Modjadjiskloof Spar Manager), with the lucky kids on the new bikes.

Lights in King Edward and Middle Street fixed The street lights in King Edward Avenue that never switch off, and the lights in Middle Street that never switch on... Tzaneen residents living in these two streets asked the Bulletin to investigate these two problem streets. We asked the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s spokesman, Mr Neville Ndlala, to look into the situation. He told us that residents do not inform the municipality when being faced by these sort of problems. “The GTM should be notified of

all problems relating to its property,” he said. The electro-technical engineer of the GTM, Mr Pierre van den Heever, said he wasn’t aware of the problem either, when we approached him for comment. He undertook to have it investigated immediately — and a couple of days later the problems in both streets were rectified. — Joy Mojela joy@bulletin.us.com

the vandalising of computer laboratories at school. The minister was speaking during an interview at an official launch of a computer media centre at Morutsi Primary School in Ward 7 of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. She said a total of 209 schools have already benefited from this programme nationally, but 20 laboratories have already been broken into or vandalized. The school received this donation after they won a national competition called Baswa le Meetse (Youth and Water) drama competition held earlier this year. The principal, Mr Peter Ramatsoma, said they have waited for ten years to win this. Mr Eric Matsomane, MTN manager for the education department, said the donation was part of his company’s social responsibility programme which initiates giving back to the communities who support them.

No school when it rains About 450 pupils from Khudu Secondary School at Loraine in Sekororo are forced to stay at home when it rains after the roof of the classrooms were destroyed by a heavy storm three years ago. A devastating hailstorm in 2011 destroyed the roof of six blocks with three classrooms each. The parents disrupted lessons when they withdrew their children to join in a protest march to the school because they wanted to put pressure on the department of education to speed up the repairing process. According to a concerned parent, Mr Matome Lesike, they had a problem with the department because the pupils had to stay at home when it rains, as they then cannot attend classes. He said they were concerned at the slow pace the department was working because the problem was already reported three years

ago. “We would like to appeal to the government to speed up the process of rebuilding the roof in order for the pupils to prepare for better results at the end of the year,” Lesike said. The provincial spokesman for the department of education, Mr Pitsi Maloba, said they were not aware of the problem, but promised to investigate.

Plasies trump Rob Ferreira

After the holiday tours, Merensky High School’s rugby team were looking forward to another round of home matches against Rob Ferreira High School in White River. These two schools have built up a healthy rivalry over the years and matches are always played in great spirit and sportsmanship. With the start of the u.14A match the heavens opened up and the crowd prepared themselves for another day of rugby in the rain. Rob Ferreira exploited the wet conditions and raced into a 12-0 lead. However, the u.14A has already showed that they have a “never say die” attitude and fought back to level the score 12-12 just before the game ended. On the B field, the Plasies’ u.14B team had a field day and raced to a 28-5 win. The u.15 team continued with their great start to the season. After the early downpour the field was wet and made conditions very tricky. Plasies got off to a flying start and were leading 19-0 only fifteen minutes into the game. Rob Ferreira fought back strongly and the teams went into the half-time break with Merensky leading 19-11. The second half started where the first ended and Rob Ferreira were suddenly in the lead by 21-19. In a spirited fight Merensky scored two late tries closing the game on 33-21. The tries were scored by Casper Jordaan, Ryno van Burick, Josua Montgomery, Noko Malatji and Sammy Maponya. After the successful Glenwood tour and the unbeaten start to the year there was an air of expectation surrounding the u.16A game. The first half was played at an unrelenting tempo and it was clear that Rob Ferreira were here to challenge the Plasies. An injury to the key backline player Wynand Scholtz, disrupted the Merensky boys and Rob Ferreira were soon in a 19-5 lead. The second half was very tough with two serious injuries taking the steam out of the Merensky engine. Rob Ferreira opened up the game in the last fifteen minutes and were deserved winners with a score of 45-5. The u.16B team were the only other team to be beaten in a very close game by 7-5. was scored by Abdul Hussein — his first try ever. The Merensky Ratels, depleted by injuries, took on a very strong Rob Ferrreira second team. The field, wet and muddied by the earlier games, made conditions very difficult. The match was error proned and was eventually won by Merensky by 7-3. Although the sun broke through the clouds, the field was still wet and muddy when the first teams took to the field. Merensky’s show cattle from their PinZ²yl stud paraded around the field in what has now become a tradition at the school. Merensky got off to a blistering start with Lehan Nel scoring a brilliant try after a 50 m solo run. This was followed minutes later by a try by Phillip Nel after an off-load in midfield. The score was 10-0 for Merensky. The fight was still in Rob Ferreira and they scored three outstanding tries to lead Merensky 21-10. After the break the Plasies held onto the ball and brilliant interplay between the forwards and backs resulted in the third try for Merensky, again scored by centre Phillip Nel. Keith Lawrence then scored for Merensky to take them into the lead again, before Courtney Schlebusch scored the final try to secure another great win of 29-21 for Merensky. Another great home win for the Plasies: 4 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses.

Micheal Le Roux (Merensky) breaks away.

Hockey wins The boys’ and girls’ first hockey teams of Stanford Lake College travelled to Potchefstroom to participate in coaching clinic sessions and competitive matches. A total of 42 schools took part in this event, with the mornings being devoted to coaching clinics that were run by PUK players, and the afternoons to playing matches. They were divided up into pools and the boys and girls were placed second in their pool. The girls eventually ended eighth out of 28 schools. The boys played in the semi-final and won the game on penalty strokes. They then played in the final against Grace College and once again walked away as winners on penalty strokes.

“Not twais ien whan whiek!” sê ArthurIngelsman!

So, hoeveel onskuldige mense wil jy doodskiet, Milady? “De swiet fieng ies, ôl dous kambekkieds ien de menshind ghyms aar ienglieshspiekieng,” plant ou AI toe ‘n middernagtelike Gerrie Nel-opstopper in ‘n Wimpy Bar op ons wangbene! “The fear of death follows the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” — Mark Twain
