Residents express a willingness to vote As we draw closer to the polls, Bulletin took to the streets to see how willing Greater Tzaneen/Mopani is to vote for the national government on Wednesday. In a random approach, we asked residents two questions:
• Are you going to vote on 7 May? • Why? compiled by
Joy Mojela
joy@bulletin.us.com &
Arnold Mabunda
arnold@bulletin.us.com
Tlangelani Ngobeni (25) Definitely. I am surely going to make my cross and make it red.
Rachel Nkuna (35) Yes. The government is looking after us and providing for our children with social grants.
Lilly Mongwe (25) Truly, I will vote. I am tired of the ruling party. I need to make my cross and vote for change.
MJ Du Preez (29) Yes. Why not? One has to vote for change. Johannes Rababalale (33) Yep. I’m supposed to. It’s voting season.
Ngwako Malatji (40) Yes. Although it’s had its failures, the government’s achieved a lot of things since democracy. Road maintenance, no fees schools and the school feeding scheme are some of the things we currently enjoy. If we give them another chance, I believe they can do more.
Sarel Dutoit (29) Not at all. I didn’t register. All the parties seem to be saying the same thing. I’d struggle to choose a favourite.
David Poley (44) Yes. I’m hoping for a new government that will serve the people and the country.
Jeanette Nolte (55) Yes. I will vote for my party.

Citrus growers on edge over possible export ban Citrus growers in the Lowveld as well as the rest of South Africa are still holding their breath on the European Union’s attitude towards a possible ban on citrus exports due to the black spot (CBS) issue. They, however, believe in a positive outcome eventually. Last year a ban was placed on SA citrus to the EU due to 35 interventions of black spot, after an earlier ruling that only five interventions would be allowed. News about the EU’s decision on the matter was expected yesterday after a meeting by the European Commission, where a standing committee on plant health was expected to announce a decisive answer. The commission decided to postpone it’s findings because of need for members to spend more time on the issue. However, the Citrus Growers’ Association (CRA), indicated that, together with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, local growers had over the past year worked tirelessly to prevent citrus black spot in their orchards. Other measures were also taken and explained to the EU and its members, who reacted positively. Mr Deon Joubert, special envoy on market access and EU matters at the CGA, denied earlier reports that the ban was to be lifted on local citrus. He said the ban at the end
of last year’s season, because of 35 infected shipments, was “only symbolic and not practical”. This year’s discussions were on what set of rules SA would adopt for its exports. Joubert had also canvassed the preventative measures with Spanish growers and their department of agriculture. “They seemed to be impressed that it was scientifically sound and practical.” Mr Justin Chadwick, CEO of the CGA, said earlier more growers were able to withdraw produce from suspected orchards destined for the EU. “To date this year over 1 100 orchards had been withdrawn as a proactive step to reducing the likelihood of interceptions, compared to 102 orchards last year.” South Africa is one of the largest exporters of citrus to Europe and the United Kingdom, with an income of R4 billion. Citrus black spot is only present in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, while the producing areas in the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Province are not affected. *Bulletin attempted to reach Mr Pieter Vorster, the chairman of AgriLetaba, on Wednesday and Thursday to get AgriLetaba’s views on the matter. He was unfortunately not available for comment at the time.
Lim to take tough stance on Sadtu’s ‘sale’ of jobs
Anney Letsoalo (31) Nope, I won’t vote. I have my personal reasons, which I don’t think I want to disclose to anyone at the moment.
Piet Mkhari (34) Yes. For change, employment opportunities. Voting is power.
Ntsako Makhubela (34) Yes. It’s my responsibility to vote for the people I want to govern my country. Voting is my voice to speak for change.
Chantel Fourie (31) Indeed. I will exercise my right to vote.

Limpopo’s Department of Education is ready to take actions against any official who would be found to have participated in a cash-for-jobs scheme by members of the SA Democratic Teachers Union. This follows last week’s alarming reports that teachers who wanted to get promoted to principals and deputy principals would have to pay R30 000. According to Limpopo Education Department spokesman, Mr Pitsi Maloba, the department is taking this matter very seriously and has launched an intensive investigation into the fraudulent and corrupt practice. He said they would be working closely with law enforcement agencies like the Police, Hawks and Special Investigation Unit (SIU). “Those found to have been involved in this scam would be brought to book,” Maloba said. He confirmed that ten posts of circuit managers, for which the shortlisting had been finalised and the recommendations
have been handed over to the department, have been blocked. Maloba explained that the MEC and the acting head of the department would not consider the list, because it seems that there were a number of discrepancies in the selections. “We would not consider the list which we received from the districts for the positions of the circuit managers. as we would like to apply a fair process,” he said. According to a well-placed source in the Mopani District, there are three circuit managers (whose names are known to the Bulletin) who have been doing this for years. The three allegedly make the schools ungovernable, while dissatisfied teachers embarked on a go-slow to express their concerns. One teacher who even struggled to get appointed to a junior post as a teacher said she took a long time to get a job, as she did not agree to paying a bribe to a certain circuit manager. — Michael Sakuneka michael@bulletin.us.com

No mercy for child offenders
Foto: Louis Roux
Believe it or not, underage drivers are the worst traffic offenders in the Tzaneen area. So says the provincial traffic chief for the Tzaneen area, Mr Vicky Khumalo. He said there would be no mercy for the child offenders and the parents should the child be caught driving without a licence. “Both the parents and the child will be charged with negligent driving.” According to him young offenders think they can “outrun” traffic officers and therefore put other motorists’ lives at risk. “It has happened that when we call the parents of the young offenders driving without a licence, they get angry and blame us. It is the department’s duty to protect all road users from negligent drivers, no matter what their age.” Khumalo said he has been facing a few other challenges on the roads recently. These include speeding, drunk driving and motorists using a cellphone, texting and calling, while driving. “There has also been an increase in accidents in the Magoebaskloof and on the Modjadji’s Valley road recently. I have received many complaints from farmers in that area that motorists don’t respect the law and other road users.” Khumalo believes in a hands-on approach to complete his daily tasks and said he teaches his officers to do exactly the same. “The

Tzaneen has a mixed culture with different languages and if the officers approach people with a smile, they will receive one back.” His secondary functions include responding to calls about the many potholes as well as ensuring that long grass is reported to the right authorities to be cut. He said he is aware that the roads in Tzaneen need a total revamp, but he still feels motorists should be extra careful while driving.

Van Velden bids farewell to CEO Describing her as a brave, thorough, initiative and caring leader amongst other qualities, Van Velden Hospital’s staff and hospital board bid farewell to the hospital’s retiring CEO, Ms E L Madike, last week Friday. In a ceremony held at the hospital, staff members came together with members of the hospital board, Limpopo’s department of social health, members of the public and friends and loved ones of the guest of honour, to celebrate what speakers described as a ‘very successful’ and ‘well-achieved’ career. Madike, who has a masters degree in Public Health Management, started her career as a nurse in 1977. She worked in a number of hospitals in the area and at different levels of the profession, before joining Van Velden Hospital as a CEO in 2003.
The 63-year-old mother of four and grandmother to three says although the due retiring age is 65, she has been working for quite a while now and is ready to take a break and relax. “I leave Van Velden with much happiness at the growth the hospital has had from when I first arrived in 2003”, she said, explaining that the hospital has since managed to incorporate dental, physio, optometric and occupational services. The retiring CEO, who said her greatest achievement was to train, develop and encourage many nurses to pursue managerial positions in the field, and that she will greatly miss her ward attendants who worked very hard to keep the hospital clean. — Joy Mojela

...and Doctor now stands in as CEO A general practitioner, dr John Myburgh, yesterday (1 May) took command of the Van Velden Hospital in Tzaneen as the stand-in CEO. His appointment is in line with the decision of the national minister of health, dr Aaron Motsoaledi, to do away with CEO’s being in charge of hospitals and going back to medical superintendents who have to be qualified doctors. Myburgh, who has been working at the hospital since 2009, says his main goal is maintaining the hospital and ensuring it fits the National Health Service (NHS) co-standards for hospitals. Originally from Bloemfontein, the husband and father of one, says he passionately loves being a
doctor and enjoys helping people. Myburgh’s wife is also a resident doctor at Van Velden and the couple’s inputs in terms of getting sponsorships to improve conditions at the hospital is widely known and appreciated. Recently they arranged for sponsored quarters for doctors where they can rest and relax before or after or between shifts. They have also managed to arrange for a number of other facilities at the hospital. Dr Myburgh and his family live on the Alôn Christian Community’s picturesque farm up in the mountain at Politsi. —Rithabile Maake

“Yet the influence of Christ’s 3-year ministry infinitely transcends the impact left by the combined 130 years of teaching from these men who were among the greatest philosophers of all antiquity.” So eindig Bosch sy vertelling: “Every sphere of human greatness has been enriched by this humble Carpenter of Nazareth.”

Open letter M Scott Cundill, Founder and Chairman,
The New Economic Rights Alliance (NewERA), writes: The elections are upon us. I won’t be voting because I am not registered to vote. Until this year, I simply refused to support a political system that is flawed at its very core. But this time round, I regret not being able to vote.
My father was a journalist during the struggle and became well known for his attempts to write the truth about the atrocities of the old regime. Today, I wish I could follow his lead from 1994 and scream “Go ANC, Fight for freedom!” But this time, like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, I cannot. Did you know that South Africa has plummeted to last place on the global GINI co-efficient scale? We now have the worst income distribution in the world. Not the second worst, or the third worst, the worst. The DA has done a great job of keeping the restaurants in Cape Town pumping. But the DA, like the ANC, has made no move whatsoever to reform the money system. Why? Most likely, they enjoy funding from the banks, not just as a party, but in their personal capacities. Ask yourself, have you ever seen an MP who does not drive a fancy car? I am so sick of hearing that “jobs” are the focus of our elections, because jobs are not the problem. The root of our misery is the money and debt-based banking system that controls our government through secret dealings with the Reserve Bank. Until you reform the money system, you are merely shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic. FACT: money controls politics and money is created out of thin air by the banks. The banks are a shadow government! Two years ago we were called “Conspiracy Nuts” for saying this. Now NewERA, with the help of others, have proven it. The banks have been caught red handed on numerous occasions, destroying entire countries like Cyprus, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Spain and the list goes on. Oh my gosh, presidents and prime ministers of these countries were physically replaced by bankers flown in from Wall Street! So what are our options for this election? NewERA would dearly love to list a dozen parties standing for a reform of the money and banking

It came into existence thanks to an Internet crowdfunding campaign and is the first and only SA party ever to be set up and funded by the Internet. They now have over 600 000 online and mobile followers. It boggles the mind, but here we are. The Ubuntu message is single minded and clear: create a People’s Bank that will give the people the power to create our own money without tax or interest. Right now, this right is held exclusively by private corporations, specifically the commercial banks and the devilishly shady SA Reserve Bank. After a 100 year monopoly, it is high time that our Reserve Bank gets some competition. Instead of banks creating money out of nothing and then loaning this made-up money to our government at interest (which the people must pay back), the Ubuntu Party will create a People’s Bank. This idea is not new. It has been successfully implemented in countries, states and provinces around the world. It has a track record of working outstandingly well which is why the banks hate it. And of course there is Iceland. Iceland has provided the world with a wonderful model of telling the banksters where to stick it. There are 160 000 NewERA subscribers reading this letter, plus all those that received this from a friend. If just one in four of you vote for Ubuntu on the National ballot, they will lobby for a People’s Bank and progressively remove our country from debt slavery. They just need one seat to make a difference. Just one seat. Once they are in, they will influence others and expose the truth. Ubuntu only needs 40,000 votes for one seat. I will say it again — they just need one seat. By all means, vote for any other party on the provincial ballot. But please, give Ubuntu a chance in the National ballot. Ubuntu is more than a political party. It is a global liberation movement, with its roots and origin here in South Africa. Join their database at www.ubuntuparty.org.za. CHANGUION
Changuion se belangstelling in die Anglo-Boereoorlog het neerslag gevind in boeke soos Uncle Sam, Oom Paul en John Bull – Amerika en die Anglo-Boereoorlog (Pretoria, 2001) asook Silence of the Guns – The history of the Long Toms of the Anglo-Boer War (Pretoria, 2001).

A LOVING HOME THAT REFLECTS SOUTH AFRICAN DIVERSITY Consider adoption as an option. South Africa is a country with 11 official languages, hundreds of cultural groups and numerous recognised religions. Every day, families everywhere are mixing up these ingredients to create this multi-wonderful nation that we know and love. If you are thinking of adoption, have you considered adopting a child from a different race or culture? Children are just children, no matter their biological background, and all children need a loving home.

We didn’t adopt an idea, we adopted Jenna! And from the first moment she has been the love of our lives, exactly the same as a proud mom and dad would reach out for their biological baby at the hospital.

Chicken One of Merensky High School’s most faithful employees, Mr Johannes Mutileni, retired after a service period of 32 years. He was well known as the person who took great pride in the cleaning and setting up of the school hall for numerous functions. He will be sorely missed, but the blue team wishes him days of peace and quiet, without hundreds of dusty feet and numerous chairs to be stacked.

Chief launches museum in minister’s absence
N’wamitwa’s chief Lwandlamuni Felia Valoyi launched a new cultural museum in the absence of the minister of arts and culture, Mr Paul Mashatile. Many residents waited in vain for Mashatile to conduct the sodturning ceremony for the establishment of N’wamitwa’s cultural museum. Chief Valoyi arrived at the event with an apology for the Chief Felia Lwandlamuni Valoyi arrived at the venue with royal digminister’s absence. “We apolonitaries, to stand in for the minister. gise on behalf of the minister. emphasised that the cultural museum was aimed at preserving and promoting the culture and heritage of the Valoyi tribe and the entire community. A space in the museum was allocated to the Valoyi tribe where their history, heritage and cultural artefacts are displayed. Valoyi is regarded as a stalwart in the fight for freedom. The project is said to have the potential to become self-sustainable and contribute to local economic development. The exhibits at the museum is said to create job opportunities, boost cultural tourism and improve the lives of the people in the area.
The project was also said to be part of government’s rural community development programme in line with the national legacy projects, which is aimed at establishing commemorative symbols for South Africa’s history and heritage. — Arnold Mabunda arnold@bulletin.us.com

Ek belowe.

Mixed results for Plasie rugby Plasie rugby enjoyed their sixth match of the season on home ground, against visiting teams of Lydenburg. Could it be that the blazing sun and humid conditions after all the rain and mud influenced the Plasies during their rugby battle? Or what could have caused the rather weird way in which all the matches were decided in the final five minutes of play? Also rather interesting is that the scores never differed with more than seven points. First to play were the u.14’s. Merensky trailed with 10-0 at half time. They gave their all during the second half, leading with 12-10 only about three minutes from close of play. Lydenburg managed to score a try in the final few minutes, thus winning 15-12. Both the u.15 and u.16 teams experienced the dissapointment of winning points scored against them in the final minutes of their games. The u.15’s lost 19-12 and the u.16’s 23-
20. Unfortunately injuries took its toll late in the u.16’s game. Merensky’s second team, the “Ratels” continued their excellent season thus far, winning 17-10 against Lydenburg’s second team. In a very tough game both first teams gave everything. Running rugby delighted the spectators, with excellent defence on both sides. Lydenburg drew first blood, leading 7-5 at half time. The second half was even more tough. Keith Lawrence scored two tries, allowing his team to reign victorious with 10-7. After six home games, Plasie rugby results are as follows: u.14 played 6 won 4; u.15 played 6 won 5; u.16 played 6 won 4; Ratels played 6 won 6; 1st Team played 6 won 5 — resulting in 80% games won this season. Merensky will play Louis Trichardt High School next Saturday on Merensky’s grounds.

Hokkietoere was baie suksesvol
Beast Mtawarira, 2. Chiliboy Ralepelle, 3. Trevor Nyakane, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 5. Flip van der Merwe, 6. Siya Kolisi, 7. Nizaam Carr, 8. Duane Vermeulen, 9. Fourie du Preez, 10. Frans Steyn, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 12. Jean de Villiers, 13. Juan de Jongh, 14. Bryan
Habana, 15. JP Pietersen en 16.Bandise Maku, 17. Gurthrö Steenkamp, 18. Jannie du Plessis, 19. Luvuyiso Luseseni, 20. Willem Alberts, 21. Charl Mcleod, 22. Elton Jantjes, 23. Gio Aplon.
Koebaai, kameraad!
