An attempt in the High Court in Pretoria to liquidate Blue Moonlight Properties 82 (Pty) Ltd of Tzaneen attorney Conrad Krüger, who developed the prestige security estate Golden Acres next to the Tzaneen Dam, failed on Wednesday. The application was brought by Mr Ettiene Tolmay, trading as Quality Plant Hire. Tolmay’s claim was dealt with a few weeks ago, when the Bulletin reported extensively on numerous matters concerning Krüger, Tzaneen businessman Tolstoi Kruger, Nedbank and others. However, the court ordered that Blue Moonlight and an intervening party, Southern Palace Investments 265 (Pty) Ltd of Mr Rayhan Hassim, which took over the bond over Golden Acres from Investec, undertake not to effect and or cause to effect registration of any immovable property registered in the name of Blue Moonlight and or Southern Palace, pending the outcome of the liquidation application. The liquidation application was postponed sine die (onbepaald). Blue Moonlight has to deliver a substantive condonation application within fifteen days. Southern

Palace in turn has to supplement and deliver its application for leave to intervene, also within fifteen days. This is far from the end of the drama. In the meantime Mr Tolstoi Kruger has issued a declaration regarding his claim against Krüger and he has upped his claim from R2,3 million to R3,2 million. This declaration came after his previous attempt, through summons, was found to be invalid by the court. In another turn of events, Kruger has been accused of having threatened and assaulted Mr Theo Behrens of Tzaneen Properties last week. Behrens and Ms Jeanette Nolte, the principal of Tzaneen Properties, are represented by Mr Johan Steyn, who confirmed that he had sent a warning letter to Kruger’s attorney, Mr Stephan van Rensburg. Van Rensburg yesterday told us that his client denies assaulting Behrens. “He was upset about a confidentiality matter between him (Kruger) and Nolte, Behrens and Tzaneen Properties. We don’t expect this incident to have any further ramifications, Van Rensburg said. Steyn also indicated that he wasn’t expecting the incident to have any further consequences.

Mopani District Municipality Building to be completed The construction of the Mopani District Municipality’s new office block in Tzaneen (at the MDM’s disaster centre on Agatha Road) which was placed on hold for almost two years, will finally resume in the next few weeks. The construction of the two storey building was stopped after the MDM had “sacked” the contractor. The MDM acted as soon as they discovered that he was failing to progress with the construction as per the time schedule. According to MDM spokesman Neil Shikwambana they were forced to stop with the process of appointing the previous contractor and then had to refer it to the Public Protector, for their intervention. The contract was found not to be valid by
the Public Protector last month and that has given the MDM the opportunity to readvertise the tender. Shikwambana said the tender was advertised two weeks ago and the appointment of the new contractor will be done in the next few weeks. He said after the public protector had overturned the contractor’s case, “the contractor went straight to court but there is no instruction we received from a court of law so far which prevented us from continuing with procurement processes”. “We are continuing with the process, because we would like to see the building completed. The construction period is long overdue,” Shikwambana said. So far an estimated R16 million has been spent on the project since the construction started.

The Mopani District Municipality has been tight-lipped for many months about allegations that the chosen supplier of pipes to distribute water from Nandoni Dam near Thohoyandou to Nsami Dam in Giyani, had supplied very poor quality pipes. After a severe drought in 2009 the MDM called for tenders for a pipeline from Nandoni to Nsami in 2010. A company called Tlong Re Yeng was awarded the tender, despite the fact that it did not qualify to be awarded the tender. After its appointment, the company allegedly failed to deliver quality pipes as per the tender specifications. It is alleged that the company supplied
poor quality materials which could not be used, even though they were paid more than R200 million. The National Government allocated R284 million towards the project. The Bulletin contacted the MDM spokesperson, Mr Neil Shikwambana, who said the problems at Tlong Re Yeng have been resolved and they are back in business. “The problem of a water shortage in Mopani, especially the Giyani area, will soon be a thing of the past. We can assure our people that the water problem will soon be over, as the contractor has been instructed to work at great speed,” he said.

Headmasters intimidated The headmasters of the 39 public schools which took Limpopo‘s provincial Department of Education to court over the shortages of school textbooks, are allegedly being intimidated, with threats of losing their jobs. This follows a court ruling last week between the Department of Education and Section 27. Lobby group Section 27 filed an urgent interdict after alleging that the department failed to supply textbooks to the schools. The court ordered the department to deliver the remaining textbooks to all 39 schools by 8 June. The department reportedly blamed school principals for the shortages, saying they failed to submit their requests on time. According to the DA’s Ms Desiree van der Walt, 47 schools which she visited have not yet received textbooks. She confirmed that some of the school principals she visited were threatened, should they divulge any information regarding the books. “Many of the schools I visited are around Tzaneen. I cannot divulge any of their names, since I made a promise not to identify them”, she said. An anonymous source has informed the Bulletin that Merensky High School in Tzaneen is amongst those without textbooks for matrics in two subjects. Section 27 said that they will continue to monitor textbook delivery to their best ability to ensure the fulfillment of the right to basic education.
IEC refuses to count ambushed ballot papers The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has reportedly stood firm on its decision not to count the 700 remaining ballot papers from Montsheng voting station in Tickyline, Maake. It has been alleged that this decision has been influenced by an incident of suspects who invaded the station. This group is believed to be amongst the protestors who demanded the construction of new shopping malls in the area. Their intention was to send a strong message to
www.bulletin.us.com the authorities for having failed them, said a resident. Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said that two of the three suspects have been charged for malicious damage to property. They will soon appear in Lenyenye’s Naphuno court, said Brigadier Mulaudzi. Both AgangSA and the ANC — who lodged complaints — have until Saturday to challenge the IEC’s decision in the electoral court. Nobody at the local IEC offices was available for comment.

GTM roads construction is progressing slowly The Greater Tzaneen Municipality has refuted claims that the construction of a 6,8 kilometer road from Morapalala to Senakwe Road in Ward 1, Bolobedu, might have to stop due to a lack of funds. This follows after reports that an initial amount of R38m, which Expectra Construction budgeted for, has been exhausted and the construction work might have to be stopped. The allegations came after reports that the contractor, who refused to give her name, had applied for a variation order of R29m from the GTM for rock blasting, and that the council was unhappy about it. The contractor refused to comment saying that she had signed a confidentiality clause
with the municipality. According to GTM spokesman Neville Ndlala, it is true that the contractor had lodged a request with the municipality and the municipality would look into it. “It is not true that the money for the project has dried up, because the construction work is continuing,” Ndlala said. In terms of the construction of a R52,3m road from Moruji to Thapane Road, also in Bolobedu, the municipality has appointed MacP Construction (Pty) Ltd. The site handover was done on 17 February and the project is expected to be completed at the end of March next year. —Michael Sakuneka

A woman who shared her expertise Ms Joey Pretorius of Tzaneen is another senior citizen of our area who could be saluted for her contribution to farming in the Mopani district. Our Sue Ettmayr interviewed Pretorius for yet another interesting article in the Bulletin’s exclusive series about senior citizens of the Lowveld.
Ms Joey Pretorius (77) proudly states that they were the first farmers in the Lowveld to perfect the drip system. They included her husband, Mr Hennie Pretorius, and his brother-in-law, Mr Willie Duykman. The drip system uses far less water than any other system, the plant itself gets the water and there is no evaporation. The late Mr Bertie van Zyl from ZZ2 in Mooketsi, visited them, learnt about the drip system and ZZ2 now uses it for all its crops. Speaking from her home at Macadamia Retirement Village, Pretorius says her personal achievement was to be able to show men that a woman can also farm successfully. Her greatest compliment was when all the farmers in the area would come to her for advice. Pretorius was born in Balfour in the old Transvaal (now Mpumalanga) in 1937 and
her family moved to Brakpan before she was one year old. She completed her primary and high schooling in Brakpan and met her husband there. She went out with her husband by default. She was supposed to go out with someone else the same evening. When he didn’t arrive for the date, she went out with Hennie instead. They married in Brakpan in 1961. Pretorius was a secretary for the Nasionale Jeugbond and her husband was with the traffic department and then joined the Rembrandt group. Four years later they moved to Trichardtsdal. Her husband and Duykman farmed with tomatoes, cucumbers, gems and Tommy Atkins mangoes. The Pretorius family then moved to a farm at Taganashoek outside Tzaneen in 1968. They had an excellent tomato harvest. They paid all their debts and had enough money for the following year.
This time they planted four hectares of tomatoes, but when the tomatoes began ripening, there was no market. Prices were at an all time low and the market had to cancel their orders. Hennie then went to work for the Letaba Coop and was the first to extract oil out of the avocados. The oil is meticulously “polished” until it contains no little bits of avo and is a clear green-yellow colour. Avocado oil is used for beauty products like soaps and creams. When the avocado season was over, he dried bananas, mangoes and pineapples in the huge ovens. With her husband at work, Pretorius took over the farm and ran it successfully for eight years. She only employed women and had eight women, one of whom had been with her for seventeen years. She decided to plant peppers, brinjals and chillies as no one steals those crops and they don’t need lots of fertiliser. Brinjals are prone to

red spider, so she had to spray for that. However, she learnt to pick the brinjals before getting their renowned aubergine colour. This way the red spider was avoided as it only gravitated towards the ripe brinjals. Pretorius recalls an order from Durban for fifty boxes of brinjals. The boxes took seventeen days by rail from Tzaneen to Durban. The brinjals, twenty in a box, were still in excellent condition and Pretorius got R27 a box. That was an excellent price in those days! Pretorius stopped farming when her husband stopped work. They bought a house in Tzaneen, sold it two years ago and bought their current home. Her husband died two months later. They’d been happily married for fifty years. Pretorius has four children. Two of them are in the world of business, one son is a dentist and the other son is a civil engineer.

She added that they only had three weeks to prepare for this upcoming competition. “We had three weeks to bring in a nonprop and a flag demonstration. To qualify we had to do three demonstrations”, said de Beer “I had to change the music and bring in more formations. After the first competition we will change some moves or music, only time will tell. At this stage we are our own biggest competition, because we want to make it to the next level of every competition”. The next competitions will be on 16 June at Merensky High School. Others will take place at Polokwane and Seshego, but the dates have not yet been finalised. — Elliot Mathye

‘Friendly almost turned sour’ On Saturday Merensky enjoyed their seventh home rugby match of the year. A warm sunny day greeted spectators and players for only the second time this year. The warm to hot conditions certainly helped with the quality rugby on display between two old foes, Merensky en Louis Trichardt. Merensky’s u.14A team kicked off proceedings with entertaining rugby — forwards and backs demonstrating their ability to interplay and the Plasies eventually running out as winners by 39-7. The Merensky u.15 team had a score to settle having lost to Louis Trichardt as u.14’s. They certainly came out firing, scoring three long range tries within the first ten minutes. Louis Trichardt made a comeback in the second quarter of the first half, but the Plasies weren’t going to let this one slip. The forwards kicked in and started to dominate possession giving the fast Merensky backs ample possession which they duly converted into points. Merensky eventually ran out convincing winners defeating Louis Trichardt by 40-10.
the Mambas and they got the scoreboard rolling. Six tries later the Mambas ended off the game with a convincing 48-10 score line. Self-belief is an amazing asset for any team and this group of boys is certainly showing a lot of confidence again. Leading into the first team game many in the crowd were hoping that the Plasies would give the highly rated Louis Trichardt first team a run for its money. Louis Trichardt started the game at a frenetic pace and scored from a charge down within the opening minutes
The Merensky Ratels (2nd team) don’t understand how the form book works, don’t know how to lose a match and for stalwart coach “Oom” Peet Vorster this team just keeps producing the goods. Hardly ever able to field the same team from one week to the next, the Ratels produced a hard fought win against their much more fancied opponents. The triumphant final score was 19-7 to Merensky. The Merensky Mambas (u.16), after a scorching start to the season, had lost two games on the trot and wanted to make amends. Ravaged by injuries the side was certainly not the strongest on paper, but very hard work during the week’s training sessions certainly paid off handsomely. A close contest in the first fifteen minutes saw the score a mere 15-10 to Merensky. However, a brilliant 45 meter drop goal by Wynand Scholtz kicked-started Wynand Scholtz probeer ‘n Louis Trichardt-speler afstamp.

of the game. Howeve,r Merensky wanted to make a game of it and started to gain momentum until a dangerous spear tackle resulted in a game changing moment. Much is made by SARU and the provincial rugby structures of BokSmart – the new buzz word in player safety. Within five minutes of each other two dangerous tackles almost derailed this friendly match between the two schools. Argue as much as you want—– the referee is the sole judge of fact — to many the spear tackle deserved a red card. Perhaps because the game was a friendly it was reduced to a yellow card offence. But make no mistake, this is a good Louis Trichardt team and the Merensky boys were definitely not switched on and in the end were out-played. The final score of 44-13 in favour of Louis Trichardt was a deserved win for the boys from the Soutpansberg. After ten matches the Merensky rugby scorecard reflects the following: u.14: Played 10 won 8; u.15: Played 10 won 8; u.16 : Played 10 won 8; Ratels: Played 7 won 7; First team: Played 10 won 6. An 80% win rate for Merensky is a very positive reflection on how rugby continues to develop at the school in 2014.

“A really strong woman accepts the war she went through and is ennobled by her scars.” — Carly Simon
