Leeanne Wentzel Excellent plan and if everybody stands together the GTM would not have the capacity to act against all the non-paying businesses. In fact I would as a consumer be prepared to boycott those that pay their taxes. Douglas Paul Hamilton The GTM and the SAPD as well SARS have to address this problem and must also pull in Home Affairs as there is a whole lot legal issues concerning trading in our town. If the GTM open their minds, there is a whole lot of money and jobs to be made on regulation concerning hawkers, paying rent, health inspectors and general anti - crime preventions. The fact that hawkers must be considered as a economic power house for aliens who do say have a workers permit.Home affairs must look into what the laws say about foreigners who are lining our walk ways. The GTM has an obligation to keep our town clean, apart from a monthly hawkers fee,on the spot health. Inspections and a heafty fine for not keeping to regulated health and fire should be imposed on those unsightly stands.

• Some (maybe even most?) businessmen in Tzaneen have had enough of the lawless and chaotic manner in which informal traders are proliferating in town. Some are now arguing that if the GTM is not prepared to restore order and start protecting the rights of licensed businesses that have to pay rent and adhere to all kinds of health regulations, they will stop paying taxes and trade license fees to the GTM. Do you think it is a good and achievable plan; and would you support it even if the authorities take steps against businesses that are boycotting license fees and taxes? vir smouse. Die vraag kan dus gevra word hoeveel besighede misbruik die sypadjies vir smous bedrywighede, of is dit ‘n geval van “if you can’t beat them join them”.

The SAPD and SARs can control illegal contraband and other pirated items. This should be done daily.Fruit and Veg vendors should pay a monthly fee to rent a stall and follow the health regulations concerning their produce. GTM can get legalized revenue from hawkers and then they too can keep our town clean. Frederick Pohl Die GTM moet voorsiening maak

Strike in local timber industry comes to end A strike in the wood industry that could have had a bad effect on citrus and other components in Limpopo’s agricultural programme was ended yesterday with an agreement to rise earnings to 8,5%, with a further 0,5% added as from January next year. Members of the trade union Ceppwawu downed tools last week, demanding wage increases. This meant that production at several sawmills in the province came to a complete halt. After discussions and positive negotiations it was agreed on an increase of 8,5% as from

July 2014, with an additional 0,5% as from January 2015 to bring the total rise up to 9%. Minimum wages in the sector was set on R2 500 per worker. Ceppwawu’s representative in Tzaneen, Mr Lucky Ndau, said yesterday that the strike is called off and work will continue as normal from today. The agreement brought relief to several industries in the area, who were dependant on the delivery of wood for the manufacturing of much needed items like pellets in the citrus industry.

Throughout the past week Tzaneen police caught 97 culprits in the nearby areas for their participation in criminal offences. Police caught 21 people involved in assault, shoplifting, robbery, theft and eighteen others held for possession of dagga, murder, prostitution and illegal gambling. At least 58 more culprits were taken into custody for liquor and traffic offences.

A 45-year-old man was reportedly knocked down in a hit and run accident in Khopo, Modjadjiskloof, on Saturday. Witnesses are said to have alerted the police. Upon arrival pathologists certified the man dead. No suspects have been arrested, said W/O Road users beware Magazi. “Our investigations to determine the During the past week Haenertsburg police

The suspects were arrested after they had allegedly put a vehicle on fire, as well as a house belonging to a local headman known as Tototo. They accused him of killing 51-year-old Ms Florah Ndlovu. During the protest some protestors were naked and the police condemn such unbecoming behaviour, said Tzaneen Police spokesman Lt Col Ngoepe Moatshe. They also advise residents to refrain from illegal protests and conduct their gatherings within the law, he added. Post mortem results revealed that Ndlovu, who was found dead in the nearby bushes, was caught in a veld fire and died as a result of that. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon and police investigations are ongoing.

Letsitele police arrested a 30-year-old man in possession of a suspected stolen cow. The cow was found alive inside the boot of the suspect’s vehicle by our patrol officers, said Tzaneen’s Police spokesman, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe. The passengers ran away while the driver was caught on the spot, he said. The suspect appeared in the Ritavi Magistrates Court on a charge of suspected stolen property.

Mozambican Ambassador expresses worry over ritual killing

Mozambican ambassador Fernando Fazenda is seen here speaking with Mozambican refugees at Xipurapureni village in Malamulele.

Fernando Fazenda, Mozambic’s ambassador in Pretoria, has expressed concern over a ritual killing which was committed by Mozambican nationals residing at

Xipurapureni village in Malamulele last month. Amos Hlungwani from Mozambique approached another Mozambican national in the area and asked if he knew of anyone in need of human parts. The man has turned state witness. He allegedly alerted the police, who set up a trap and found that the suspect did not actually have the human parts, but was planning to kill once a buyer was available. “The suspect, along with his friend who is currently in police custody, lured one of his relatives to the nearby bushes where they killed him,” explained Eric Masungwini, a spokesperson of the local residents. Hlungwani went on the run and is still at large. Speaking about the incident during his visit to the area, the ambassador said ritual killings were not known in Mozambique, and urged all Mozambicans in the country to refrain from it.

Tzaneenite will represent SA Bianca Combrink (17) from Tzaneen is taking part in an internationBianca Combrink al modelling competition in Burgas, Bulgaria, later this month. This Merensky Gr 11 pupil, with a broad grin, had rushed home for her interview. She asks if she can freshen up and change out of her blue school clothes. She lets her long blonde hair fall down, changes her clothes quickly and this perfectly proportioned 1,75 meter gazelle-like teenager drapes herself gracefully on the family patio, exuding a maturity far beyond her years. It’s not surprising that her role model is internationally known celebrity and go-getter Kate Moss. Bianca began modelling in Gr 7. She worked under Ms Leandri Schreiber from the Tzaneen based franchise Amone Modelling Academy. Bianca won the locally based beauty contest, Kings and Queens world, in the 16-17 category. This paved the way for her to represent South Africa in the upcoming international contest. Bianca explains that most modelling competitions are held in Bulgaria and the country is regarded as the introduction to the international world of modelling. She will be travelling abroad for the first time in her life with her mother Ms Ansie Combrink, a well known beautician. The pair will fly Istanbul in Turkey and from there they will travel by bus to Bulgaria. The other girl representing SA is Ms Andruska

Botes from KwaZulu-Natal. Bianca will be wearing a light and dark blue dress in the competition as well as a national costume. She designed the latter herself with the SA flag as the main motif and a cloak depicting the Big Five. Bianca will have an interview, wearing her national costume, and will be judged not just on her looks but on how confident she is and how she intends making a difference in the world. She wants to help homeless orphans and wants to visit primary schools and kindergartens in rural areas. She aspires to make a difference for them in terms of living. Bianca will also dance for the panel of judges. Guiding her is Ms Estie Nawratle, the American and Latin dancing teacher from Merensky who also teaches hospitality studies and life orientation. Bianca has chosen three dances. A Voortrekker dance, an African traditional dance and a gumboot dance. The ultimate prize at this annual event is the title of Queen World. Bianca, who was born in Krugersdorp, heaped praise on a Tzaneen based dress designer, Ms Liesl Cronje. She wore her dresses at a recent cancer event. The Bulgarian competition will open the door to lucrative modelling contracts, but Bianca wants to study a year at university after matric, to become a pre-school teacher and will then decide whether to stay on campus or study further through Unisa. She has an older sister, Clarissa, who’s in her second year at Potchefstroom University, studying to teach disabled children.

Pleasant surprise!

Genie, Rainer & Megan Stoltz from Tzaneen writes by e-mail: Effecient, friendly and fast are not words normally associated with the Department of Home Affairs (Tzaneen). What was supposed to be a nightmarish experience of long queue, ineffecient staff and long waiting periods turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. We applied for a passport for our baby, and renewed by husbands passport in under thirty minutes. We phoned and made sure which documents were required, and the cost for each, made sure we had our paper work ready and headed for Tzaneen DHA at 15:00 on a Wednesday afternoon. At the stairs leading up to the DHA, Jonas, a selfemployed photographer, offered us his services for passport photos. At his “office” around the corner, we had our pictures taken for a reasonable R25. His service was fast, friendly and efficient (he brought the pictures while we went ahead and got into the queue). Yvonne processed our paperwork and did an excellent job. She was efficient and very knowledgable, answered all our questions and assured us they will do their best to get our documents ready as soon as posibble. We made payment at the cashier, another lovely lady, friendly and very efficient. Exactly seven days later, we received an sms to confirm that our baby’s passport was ready for collection, and fourteen days from the date of application, my husband received his passport. Upon collection I spoke to the equally competent and friendly Chreddy, he assis-

ted me in applying for a reprint of our marriage certificate, which was processed for a reasonable R20, we expect to receive the sms for collection soon. We realised that the phone number listed on the Internet for DHA Tzaneen is incorrect, I did bring this to the attention of the staff mentioned above. I suggest anyone needing to visit DHA phone in advance, get confirmation of the documentation and cost required to save time and effort. You can also confirm if their systems are online (they also have problems with Internet service from time to time like everyone else, and as everything is done on a database, applications, and collections all need to be captured on their computer system). Walk up to anyone of the staff, and ask in which queue you need to stand/sit for the particular item you required, there are various queues, and many elderly people waiting for the new ID cards, it is not just one queue for everyone, and this system makes for a much more efficient process. Be calm and friendly and remember, everyone else is in a hurry, and their requests are also important. Having the right info and documents, a smile and some patience, will get you very far, you may even be pleasantly surprised! To make your experience even more pleasant, try parking in the Tzaneng Mall parking lot, and take the escalators, or park at the ABSA parking area, and take the escalator down and walk across Danie

Met u hand lei U my, met u regterhand hou U my styf vas.” (My vrye vertaling)

Frustrated Frustrated motorist from Haenertsburg writes by e-mail: I am writing this to you in utter frustration and irritation. I live on the mountain between Magoebaskloof and Haenertsburg. This morning I was taking my child to school in Haenertsburg, traveling at 100 km/h (the speed limit on this road is 80) when a white VW Polo (I have the registration number) overtook me on a double white line on a curve with oncoming traffic, and almost pushed me off the road. When I got to Haenertsburg he had stopped at the petrol station and I stopped and confronted him (which I should not have done) He had four other perplexing passengers in his car with him. I told him if I saw him do it again I would push him off the road. My frustration is that I travel this road every day with children in the car and I am constantly being overtaken or forced into

the yellow line by idiot drivers , a lot of them government red licence plates. Since the road has been rebuilt and repaired I have yet to see any traffic police on this road. People are doing upwards of 140 km/h especially in the dip past Stanford College and past Pot n Plow. Please can something be done about this before some innocent people are killed or maimed on this road? • T J Malatji FCIS on behalf of the Mamphoku Makgoba Community Trust: Your letter will be published next week — Editor • Mathebula Jappy: Your letter will also be published next week — Editor • PMB: Your letter contains so much slander that we cannot publish it — Editor • Donker kol: Dink u dit is reg en regverdig om die skool verantwoordelik te hou vir die (swak) gedrag van leerlinge oor ‘n naweek? Understanding the pervading rape culture Joy Mojela, who obtained her BA degree in Media and Film Studies from the University of Cape Town and is doing her internship with the Bulletin, researched today’s contribution about sexual abuse. This is another article to focus on Womens’ Day/Month.

Slightly more than a week ago, the community of Nkomo Village in Giyani furiously beatup a 26-year-old man for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in front of her mother after he broke into their house. In November last year, a six-week-old was raped in Galeshewe, Northern Cape. A few months earlier, in February, the country mourned the death of seventeenyear-old Anene Booysen who died from injuries sustained from being gang-raped and disembowelled at a construction site in Bredasdorp, Western Cape. The world was shocked in December 2012 when a 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern in South Dehli, India, died while undergoing treatment thirteen days after being raped and beaten by a group of six men in a private bus. One out of three Stories of children, teenagers, old people, infants, spouses, workers, prostitutes, people living with disabilities, homosexual people — people from all walks of life — raped or sexually assaulted by their loved ones, strangers, neighbours, teachers, boyfriends, husbands, co-workers, siblings, people of any relation or none, are but today a too common appearance in the media. “One out of three or a billion women on

the planet will be raped or beaten,” says Marianne Thamm in her Daily Maverick blog ‘Women’s Month: Women’s bodies as a landscape for trauma’. Late last year, Eye Witness News reported that a study by the Medical Research Council shows that in South Africa, 144 women are raped every day, which means six women are raped every hour. “Children as young as five are sexually assaulting each other in a surge of “power” crimes gripping the country,” read the title of an article on Times Live this year 14 July. The article reported that statistics compiled by child rights groups in SA had two hundred reported cases of sexual assaults between pre- and primary school children between January and July this year. Moreover, an article by Katie Madden in Campus Times in May reported that a University of Hawaii professor and expert in Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender, Rebecca Stotzer, studied cases of violence against transgender people. She found that 50% of the transgender people in the world experience sexual violence at least once in their lifetimes. In the article, Madden also reports a 1994 study by emeritus professor of educational psychology at the University of Alberta, Dick Sobsey, on the rate of sexual violence against disabled people. The study found that about 80% of people living with disabilities experienced sexual assault more than once in their lifetimes, with half of them having been sexually assaulted more than ten times. A Pervading Rape Culture In the 1970’s, feminists in America came up with the term rape culture to describe

the way in which sexual violence and sexual advertising, legal jargon, laws, words and abuse were becoming prevalent in society, imagery, that make violence against women with most of the victims being women, and and sexual coercion seem so normal that a general disregard of the situation in the ...continues P11 society. In her book Transforming a Rape Culture, author Emilie Bushwald defines rape culture as, a complex set of beliefs that encourage male sexual aggression and supports violence against women. It is a society where violence is seen as sexy and sexuality as violent. In a rape culture, women perceive a continuum of threatened violence that ranges from sexual remarks to sexual touching to rape itself. A rape culture condones physical and emotional terrorism against women as the norm. (www.wavaw.ca)

Highly prevalent Ashley Jordan, a professional writer, feminist activist and a member of the Board of Directors of Humanist Society of New Mexico (HSNM) and blogger, says, rape culture

is an environment in which rape is highly prevalent, normalized and excused by the society’s media, popular culture, and political figures. Rape culture is perpetuated through the use of misogynistic language, the objectification or women’s bodies, and the glamorization of sexual violence, which creates a social culture that disregards women’s rights and their safety. Some examples include victim blaming (“She asked for it!”), tolerance of sexual harassment, rape jokes, inflating the statistics of false rape reports, trivializing sexual assaults, and teaching young girls “not to get raped” instead of teaching young men not to rape. (www.wavaw.ca)

“In a rape culture both men and women assume that sexual violence is a fact of life, inevitable as death or taxes,” writes Melissa McEwan, founder and manager of the award-winning political and cultural blog Shakesville. Rape culture includes jokes, TV, music,

Combating the Rape Culture

Combating rape culture means understanding what rape culture is and stop giving excuses for why people rape. “Combating rape culture includes understanding that we can’t change the way we live, nor tell our children to do so, to not be raped. Rape is wrong no matter what the circumstances. It includes rape victims reporting their cases to hold their rapists accountable.” Lizelle Hagenmeier (Lizelle Hagenmeier, Social Worker at FAMSA Tzaneen) “Combating rape culture includes teaching our children that everyone has a right to their body. No one should force them to do what they don’t want and that they should not force anyone to do what they don’t want.” (Greta Bekker, Play Therapist) “Combating rape is knowing that sex beDr. Greta Bekker tween an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old is rape, even if it is consensual, and then reporting it.” (Greta Bekker, Play Therapist)

The pictures on this page have been forwarded to us by Mr Henk Mienie, the GTM’s manager of refuse removal. It is alarming to think that a tunnel was dug and a “room” hollowed out below a house in a residential area in a West Rand town. Somebody remarked that for as long as the buyers of illegal copper are not controlled properly and/or eliminated totally, the problem will not be solved. And we will not be safe.

New VW Polo is more than a nip and tuck Undoubtedly one of the most successful hatchbacks in SA (at least according to Naamsa’s monthly new vehicle sales figures), the Volkswagen Polo has received a midlife update, and it’s a little bit more than just a nip and tuck. This is what the updated Polo has to offer:

*Specifications Model 81 kW 1,2 TSI Highline manual Price Power Torque

81 kW @ 5 500 r/min 175 N.m @ 4 000 r/min

Styling

Exterior changes include larger headlamps, a resculpted front bumper, lower air intake and more chrome detailing round the fog lamps, all of which bring it in line with its bigger Golf sibling. There are small changes at the back, but if you have a keen eye for all things Polo, you may notice that there’s a cleaner layout, a wider cutout for the number plate and redesigned rear lights. The interior is typically VW with a neat layout throughout. The new steering wheel looks good and adds a classier touch to the cabin with tidily laid out audio and cruise control buttons.

Qashqai offers the ultimate experience

The second generation Nissan crossover, the Quashkai, is now available. It is to be said that the first modeled hatchback of this vehicle was the first compact crossover into a segment of the vehicle market that has evolved into one of the largest markets globally. Konstantin Vieregge, general manager of marketing at Nissan SA, described the new model as “the ultimate driving experience”. This was underlined by several motor journalists over the past two months, agreeing that the new version was a “stunner”. Power comes from a choice of four engines: the 1,2 and 1,6 turbo petrol models, and the 1,5 and 1,6 diesels. The three trim-levels available are Acenta, Acenta Premium and the flagship Tekna. The new Qashqai adds a huge range of clever

in-car technology, some impressively economical petrol and diesel engines and a choice of manual or Xtronic automatic gearboxes. The interior quality is as good as it gets in what is now a crowded crossover class. Thanks to extended dimensions, space and practicality inside have been improved, although they’re not class leading. There is more clever tech under the skin too, making sure the new Qashqai is comfortable and secure to drive. Go see it at BB Motors, Tzaneen, and even take it for a test drive. But be warned: a test drive could result in a purchase, since it is an exciting vehicle. So be prepared… and talk to your bank manager before you go and see it!

has fixed that with this freshened model and added various multimedia systems (depending on the model and which option boxes are ticked). The entry-level infotainment setup on the Trendline is what VW calls the Composition Touch unit and features a five-inch monochrome screen with four speakers, an SD card slot and auxiliary inputs. Move up a level and you get the more connected: Composition Colour with a fiveinch colour display, six speakers, an SD card slot and USB and Bluetooth connectivity. There’s also an optional system that offers a larger screen and is available on all except the Trendline versions. Other new features include an updated climate control system, a driver alert system (Highline versions) and an automatic postcollision braking system is standard. The latter system, according to VW, “automatically initiates braking of the vehicle that has had an accident in order to prevent a subsequent collision”.

For now, there’s only the 1,2 TSI engine, which is mated with a six-speed manual box on both versions of the powerplant. The 88 kW unit has the option of a sevenspeed DSG transmission, however. The new Polo is available in three equipment levels: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. There’s also the 1,2 CrossPolo for those who want something a bit more crossover-like. The range will expand early in 2015. It’s clear that VW took a look at the Polo’s competition and realised that the brand would have to raise its game in the light car segment. It’s not that sales were slowing down — South Africa is the third biggest Polo (including Polo Vivo) market in the world — but it’s been obvious that VW’s competition is keen to make inroads into the company’s market leadership in the super mini market. The Polo has raised the bar in its segment. It now offers the best of the B-segment with some features that can only be found in larger, much more expensive vehicles. With the 1,4 TDI and a GTI joining the ranks in the near future, not forgetting the now standard 3-year/45 000 km service plan on each model, next year’s Top 12 Best Buy winner in this segment will only be decided after protracted debate. Well played, Volkswagen.

Understanding the pervading rape culture ...continued from P7 people believe that rape is inevitable. (www. wawaw.ca) “We live in a society that teaches — Don’t get raped instead of Don’t rape.” (www. wawaw.ca) In her Shakesville blog, McEwan gives an extensive list to describe rape culture. Amongst other descriptions, she says:

• Rape culture is ignoring the cavernous need for men’s prison reform in part because the threat of being raped in prison is considered an acceptable deterrent to committing crime, and the threat only works if actual men are actually being raped. • Rape culture is not even talking about the reality that many women are sexually assaulted multiple times affects women’s daily movements. • Rape culture is telling girls and women to be careful about what [they] wear, how [they] wear it, how [they] carry themselves. • Rape culture is the idea that only certain people rape — and only certain people get raped. • Rape culture is ignoring that the thing about rap-

ists is that they rape people. • Rape culture is the narrative that sex workers can’t be raped. • Rape culture is the assertion that wives can’t be raped. • Rape culture is ignoring the way in which profes-

tend to correlate with lower conviction rates. • Rape culture is victim-blaming. • Rape culture is a judge blaming a child for her own rape. • Rape culture is a minister blaming his child victims. • Rape culture is accusing a child of enjoying being held hostage, raped, and tortured. • Rape culture is spending enormous amounts of time finding any reason at all that victim[s] can be

blamed for [their] own rape. Vanjaar se tema is “Somerkersfees”.

Get ready for Science Week The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) will, for the third year running, be participating in National Science Week (NSW). NSW 2014, organised by the SA Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), under the auspices of the Department of Science and Tech-

nology (DST), will run from 2 to 9 August. The week is a countrywide celebration of science, involving various stakeholders and role players conducting science-based activities during the week. The aim is to advance public awareness, appreciation and engagement of science, engineering and technology in SA. NSW is run in all nine provinces simultaneously at multiple sites per province. This year’s theme is Today science, tomorrow’s world. The SAC will focus on astronomy, space technology and mathematics. Various activities will be run, including the opportunity to look at the sun, moon, Saturn, stars and deepsky objects through a telescope, discussions and demonstrations, and handout material. Today at Letaba Show, Tzaneen. Info: Kos Coronaios at 079 148 4934.

interessanthede opgelewer, maar hy sal hom by Glenwood bepaal.

Dit smaak Oubal sommige pedagoë is groter huigelaars as ander! **GAD=Grootste Afrikaanse Dagblad “Hypocrisy is the homage vice pays to virtue.” — Francois de La Rochefoucauld
