Corruption in GLM probed An official charge of fraud and corruption was laid at the police station in Modjadjiskloof against the municipal manager, Ms TG Mashaba, and the Greater Letaba Municipality, by the trade union SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu). Details of the charges could not be made available, as a police investigation into the matter is still underway. The regional secretary of Samwu in Polokwane, Mr Simon Mathe, said serious allegations are investigated and more details will be available as the investigations progress. “We can’t jeopardise the police investigations at this point in time,” he said.

President Jacob Zuma will ensure that the capacity of all water treatment plants in Giyani and the rest of the Mopani district were improved in order to ensure that water reaches all the areas. He was speaking in Giyani on Friday during the launch of the Nsami Dam water treatment plant, which was upgraded from producing 6,7 megalitres of water a day to 36,7 megalitres, he promised to monitor the situation. “I will be seeking updates from the Minister of Water and Sanitation and the Premier of the province about the progress. I’m happy that the Nsami Plant is at 99% completed, but we need to also increase the capacity of the Middle Letaba Dam to ensure that every community in

Giyani has access to water and sanitation,” he said. The new plant is expected to distribute water to 55 villages out of 92 in Giyani . Asked if the current solution was enough to eradicate all the water related problems in Giyani, the Minister for Water and Sanitation, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, said since the water problem in Giyani was huge, the new plant would not resolve all problems but will half them. “The people who messed up before must take full responsibility, including those that are working for government and have delayed access to water,” added the Minister. Zuma and Mokonyane are seen here inspecting the new plant.

‘Kangaroo court’ All beautiful ladies from the Mopani district are encouraged to enter for the Miss Mopani 2015 beauty pageant. Promising entrants should be at least eighteen years of age and not older than 25. According to pageant organizer Mpangele Brain Mhangwani, this annual competition is aimed at promoting young and hopeful talent that could make a difference in their communities. The first Miss Mopani queen, Millet Hlungwani (seen here), was crowned in April this year. Mpangele Entertainment will be hosting auditions in all municipalities of the Mopani region and entries are open until 6 December 2014. Enquiries: mmpangele@yahoo.com.

of R50 000 — even for common assault. Equally, a person could be sentenced to anything from four days to three years by a magistrate, he said. “It is only when the magistrate goes beyond this level that I personally review the case and send it to the High Court for review,” said Chauke. But lawyers and even a senior magistrate, who obviously wouldn’t want to be identified, said this fine seems to be “disproportionally high”. It is, however, another aspect of the case that has caused people in the law profession to lift their

eyebrows. It is alleged that the magistrate at one stage adjourned the court hearing and during the adjournment he gave the accused “some of his own medicine”. Chauke denied this allegation vehemently. A further allegation that Maluleke refused to go to Saselamani for court hearings there, since he was concerned after certain threats had been directed at him, has also been denied by Chauke. Chauke confirmed that Ngobeni (the accused) has asked his lawyers to approach the High Court in a bid to minimise his fine, as he believes it is far too high.

A 29-year old man has been fined an “unreal” R8 000 by a Malamulele Magistrate, Mr M D Maluleke, for “lightly” slapping somebody in the face (which is by definition assault). However, there is allegedly a “nasty” twist in the tail of this incident. Miyelani Ngoveni briefly appeared in the court on two charges of assault, which he confessed to and was found guilty on both counts. According to the Malamulele Magistrates Court’s manager, Mr Hasani Chauke, a magistrate has the jurisdiction to impose any fine from R1 to a maximum

nie. Ons moet die ding deel. Ek bly nog daai soort liberaal.” Bliksem! Vlieg sal jou egter ‘n paar punte toegee. Wit mense se aandeel in apartheid was wreed.

Bulletin regularly chats on Facebook.

— Louis Roux louis@bulletin.us.com

— Louis Roux louis@bulletin.us.com

We are sexual beings Telling people to not have sex sounds like some kind of human rights violation. As a feminist, my views on sex and sexuality are quite liberal and progressive. I believe women can and should enjoy sexual relations as much as men. The notion of promiscuity is sexist, as it is only applied to girls. The notion that sex is what boys do to girls should stop. Girls and women should also embrace their sexualities and know that they need to consent to all sexual relations, even within relationships. I also believe that the notion that sexuality is bad and only wayward rebellious children from dysfunctional families, especially

A few weeks ago I had the honour of baptising 24 candidates, ranging from the age of a few months to the age of 24. I wonder if people really understand the meaning of being “baptised”?

So geen verlies is gely nie.

When we are baptised we are receiving the Holy Spirit into our lives, but sometimes it has become a ritual with little actual meaning. How many are baptised because “it is the right thing” to do? When a child is baptised, the parents make promises that should be binding, after all the training before the baptism takes place should ensure that they are informed as to their role in the Christian upbringing of the child. Unfortunately, after the ceremony, many fail to do what they promised and the child suffers. Attendance in church is an important part of this upbringing, but often we only see them there for special occasions. How can a child learn the true meaning of being a Christian if the parents do not play their part? Baptism also means that the per-

My kinders is gelukkig ook groot vrugte-eters. Ek moet byvoorbeeld ook om gesondheidsredes rogbrood eet en girls who have no self-respect, will be interested in recreational sexual relations should stop. Sex education at schools should also focus on sexual pleasure for both girls and boys. According to Mail&Guardian writer Sipho Kings, the current sex education at schools focuses heavily on the model of abstinence, mainly to caution learners against unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections such as HIV and AIDS. I believe the notion of abstinence as the best contraception and prevention of STIs is not unfounded. In a perfect society, one in which everyone engages in sexual rela-

Limpopo Focus No libraries More than 18 000 (71,3%) of our public schools don’t have a library and in Limpopo 3 580 or 93,5% of the ordinary government schools still don’t have a library, according to a report released by the National Education Infrastructure Management System. This is in strong contrast to the remarks by Minister Angie Motshekga in a recent speech to district officials and principals on her department’s (basic education) performance over the past five years.

For crying out loud By Joy Mojela joy@bulletin.us.com

tions through consent, abstinence will at least guarantee one protection from unwanted pregnancies. However, we are sexual beings. In 2008, the department of basic education found that pupils as young as nine years, grade three learners, were having sex and getting pregnant. The 2009 Annual School Surveys’ report showed that 109 grade three pupils had gotten pregnant in that year. I may espouse progressive and liberal views; however, by no means do I think an eighteen-year-old or

son is now part of the congregation and it is also the congregation’s duty to see to it that the child is spiritually fed and included as God’s chosen. Many a time it is expected that the spiritual leader must insure that the person is brought up as a Christian, which is a role that they should play, however, they are not with the person for most of their lives as they too are often moved from place to place. Often, the only time we see those who were baptised when it is time for them to be confirmed. Once again, “because it is the right thing to do” and what happens after they are confirmed is also of concern! Many think that now their duty to the church is completed. Accepting Christ into our lives has a far deeper meaning. Christ died for us so that we may gain eternal life. Does the true meaning of this not also include our love for others? Christ said “When two or three are gathered in My name I will be there” Consider going to church to share your beliefs. Blessings.

even a twenty-oneyear-old is matured enough to be a parent, let alone a nine-yearold. In my opinion, there is more to life than being a parent. I do believe it is revolutionary that a woman can reject a pregnancy if she deems it inconvenient; however, abortions can be traumatic both physically and emotionally and should be regarded with extreme caution. At the moment, one can argue, the abstinence focused education is not getting through to pupils. It is at least failing in its aim to prevent pregnancies amongst school pupils. According to Ilse Pauw — a clinical psychologist, linguist and health writer — a 2005 report re-

The Minister told the principals to encourage parents to assist their children to read at an early stage and said, “The only way to improve the literacy and numeracy in this country is to encourage our kids to read”. Ms Desiree van der Walt, a DA MP, said in reaction to the latest statistics that her party will write to Basic Education Minister Motshekga, requesting a progress report on her department’s interventions in the provinces most affected, and what steps will be taken to address these continued problems.

leased by the SABC and Love Life showed that young people who received conservative sex education were more likely to be sexually promiscuous than their counterparts who could access a more rounded education. Moreover, according to Andrew Verrijdt, a psychologist, abstinence focused education pushes learners to go elsewhere to learn more about their sexuality. In most cases, they turn to pornography, which arguably gives a more distorted image on sex and sexuality. Thus in this case, I believe repressing sexuality, shaming girls for being sexual and more especially misinforming young people on sexuality is rather one of the biggest social ills our society is facing in regard to the matter.

Merensky High School and Meridian College pupils faced each other in a Xitsonga and Sepedi debate at Merensky. The debate was organized by the Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuur Vereeniging (ATKV), and aimed at promoting and protecting indigenous languages. Ms Charmaine de Villiers, the secretary of the ATKV’s Letaba branch, said it was a privilege to facilitate the project “and indeed heart warming to lead the team with the enthusiastic Ms Gertrude Maseke from Merensky in our attempt to preserve and protect our indigenous languages”. Ms Clarissa Coetzee, the dynamic chairlady of the branch, said it was very pleasing to witness the pupils’ enthusiasm for the project. “We even saw a number of wet eyes. The project really went down well with the children and they appreciate the efforts to preserve our languages.” The well-known Khutso Matlou, these days a first year student at the

And people with a tertiary education were twice as likely to be employed, according to the research. “This differential will generally follow people throughout their careers, with no narrowing of the gap between graduates and non-graduates over a career span. Together, these are compelling reasons to study,” says Coughlan. “However, it is equally important that you study something that is employable, i.e. that Die Laerskool Duiwelskloof se nuwe leiers vir 2015 is aangewys en reg vir die groot verantis recognised by employers. And much better off than the student who has to repeat what makes you an attractive prospect to potential employers. “Secondly, you must choose an institution that will give you the two years.” Coughlan says that the numbers to demonstrate the impact of these best possible chance of succeeding and completing your qualification in the minimum time. Pupils debate to promote indigenous languages

Counting the lifetime financial cost Although most matrics currently writing exams think they have a plan for next year, there are many who are still undecided about the right thing to do. Unfortunately, there are also many who will have their plans thrown into disarray by their results or changed personal circumstances. So the key questions a significant number of matrics will have to face in the coming months are: • Should I study or work next year? • What about a gap year? • What happens if I study and fail? “While no one can predict with 100% accuracy the way things will turn out, there are a couple of realities to take in to consideration,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, the director of The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution. “The first thing to note, is that graduates generally earn more throughout their lives than those without post-school qualifications and they are more likely to find employment,” she says. “So if you are in a position to get a higher education, you must certainly choose that route rather than just go straight into the workplace.” A 2009 study by the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit indicated that earnings showed a linear improvement from matric to a degree. At the time, a person with an average mat-

Nonina is hungry for title Bukiwe Nonina of Giyani Boxing Club will not be going to Zambia for a holiday. No, she will be visiting the country for some serious business in the boxing ring. She is currently preparing to bring home the World Boxing Council Silver title [WBC] which belongs to the Zambian female boxing champion. Their title fight is scheduled for 22 November. “We’re preparing day and night to ensure that we bring home that belt... the Zambians should not be mistaken to think that we’re going there for a holiday,” her trainer said. The SA bantam weight champ will be fighting on her birthday and she said winning the WBC title would be the best birthday present for her. “It would be a mistake for Catherine to hold false hopes that she’s going to win.” Bukiwe said she could not afford to disappoint her father, Matshibhasi Nonina, who is also her assistant manager. Nonina, 23, has a record of eight fights with six victories, two via knockouts and two losses, while Catherine has a record of nine fights, all victories with four via knockouts. When asked if this does not scare her, Twee ywerige fietsryers van Nonina said she had die Laerskool Duiwelskloof het aan die PPS Mooketsi nothing to fear from MTB Challenge deelgeneem. her opponent. “Her Christelle Coetzer het aan die record is the last taai 35 km-ren deelgeneem en thing to worry about, skitterend tweede geëindig even her muscular in die ouderdomsgroep 1314 jaar oud. Plasie cricketers beat Westfalia On Friday last week Plasie staff members played the traditional Pro22 cricket match against Westvalia’s team on Merensky’s B cricket field. The format of the game was 22 overs, giving each team member a chance to bowl two overs and if a batsman scored twenty runs he needed to retire. This was done to give every player a chance to bat. If everyone was out, the batsman who stood down could continue with his innings. Westfalia batted first and was bowled out in the last over for 127 runs. Gerhardus was one of the players who scored 20 not out and he returned later to give his team a chance to post a good total. Merensky then had an opportunity to show their mettle. They passed Westfalia’s score in the fifteenth over and thus won the match. Merensky also had a few players who scored 20 not out (Maurits, Wessel, Hein, Danie, Magnus sr). After Merensky won in the fifteenth over, the friendly guys from Westfalia decided to let Merensky bat their full 22 overs. Everyone played their hearts out and some players narrowly escaped with a few bruises. At the end of the day there wasn’t an official man of the match, but the Merensky players named Antonie Botha for his dedication in the field, his gutsy innings with the bat and his “never say die” attitude. A very determined Magnus (Steyn Sr, Once again this yearly match was played in good spirit, decreasing Merensky’s principal) is seen here year-end stress levels with loads of fun. going for yet another run.

The members of the triumphant Merensky team are seen here. In the front is Gerhard du Toit, behind him are Francois du Toit, Hein van Heerden, Louis Fourie and Wessel van Rooyen. At the back are Mauritz Perold, Willie Stevens, Magnus Steyn Sr, Danie Olivier, Magnus Steyn Jr and Antonie Botha.

Buffalo Bass Bonanza
