Nine (!) distinctions for Merensky High School’s 2014 head boy, seven each for the top performers of Stanford Lake College and Ben Vorster High School, six for Merensky’s second best performer and five for Meridian College’s top Grade 12 pupils in 2014...

Each of these schools can boast with a 100% pass rate, there are handfulls of distinctions between them and there is also a large number of so-called Bachelor passes (may study for a degree at a university). Top achiever is Merensky’s Rean Venter, with nine distinctions, followed by Ben Vorster’s Karabo Moremi and Anika Pienaar, as well as SLC’s Josh Selfe with seven distinctions each. Right on their heels were Merensky’s Benna van Kasterop and Ben Vorster’s Nsovo Shandale and El-louise van der Merwe with six each (their photos inside on page 8) and Nhluvuko Mamafa of Meridian with five distinctions (plus a number of “fivers” from other schools). More statistics inside on page 8.

Operation butt-kick

A major clean up of municipalities in Mopani, to root out corrupt officials and/or fraud, corruption, money laundering and nepotism, is on the cards. So says a senior ANC member who has asked not to be named. In the latest development in the Mopani District Mu-

nicipality, controversial municipal manager Tim Maake has been given an opportunity and seven days to convince the MDM that he shouldn’t be suspended. • Read more about Maake and his apparent problems on page 7.

Kanker is by hom ongeveer agtien maande gelede gediagnoseer. Sy gemiddeld was meer as 70%.

Lighting strike kills game A lightning strike left twelve impala dead on a Yamorna farm outside Tzaneen on Sunday night. According to the owner, Mr Len Dekenah, “the lightning struck shortly after 19:00”. “It sounded like a cannon shot as the white flash temporarily illuminated the entire property. Then everything went dark amidst utter silence. All six electrical power points had cut out. I took my torch and went outside to reconnect the electricity.” “As I reached the swimming pool I saw the impala bodies under fallen tree branches. They were all on their sides, exposing their white bellies, with eyes wide open, staring the same direction. The Dekenah family has had impala for the last fifteen years and this is the first time they’ve lost game to lightning. Ms Magdil Dekenah was devastated, as the impala were like her babies. They were half tame and would raise their heads when she called, look at her and then come close to the house to eat the pellets that she provided. Ons Mening

Vrydag 09 Januarie 2015

Dr Jan Truter Ned Herv Kerk Letsitele

i

SA’s ‘real’ matric pass rate is 42%

The department of education has announced that 75,8% of matriculants passed their 2014 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams – but in real terms, the picture is far less rosy. Taking into account the number of drop-outs over the past twelve years, the real number of learners who managed to get a senior certificate sits quite a bit lower — at approximately 41,7%. According to statistics from the department of education, 1,252,071 pupils entered into the SA public schooling system in grade 1 in 2003 — these pupils would become the class of 2014. Fast forward twelve years, however, and only 688 660 of those learners made it through to pen their matric exams. This means that, in real terms, only 55% of the learners who started school in 2003 made it through twelve years of education – the rest were lost along the way. Put another way, with a pass rate of 75,8%, this means that only around 41,7% of learners who started school attained a NSC, while 59,2% did not. More alarming, that means only

Oh the boob-staring! Aren’t we all boob-growers tired of men staring at our boobs? Seriously, men, when you stare at our boobs, we can see you. I must say, not all men stare. I have also come to hate the ‘not all men’ meme, but in this case I mention it to vindicate the good natured and well-raised sons of Adam out there — they are truly there. Staring in general is rude. I have never summoned enough strength to call out a man when he stared at my chest, but I have seen a couple of women do it. It seems like one of those things we have to apologise for just because we sit when we pee. Have men not understood

around 12% (150 752 learners) managed to gain admission to Bachelor studies.

Minimum requirements to obtain the National Senior Certificate

Cannot fail (less than 30%) any subjects.

The state of education

Put in this context, it is clear that the matric pass rate simply does not give the full picture of the state of education in South Africa. The department of education itself, has distanced the announcement as a measure for academic achievement in the entire schooling system: “Contrary to popular belief, the Matric pass rate on its own is not a good measure of academic achievement in the schooling system, nor was the pass rate ever designed for this. However, the pass rate can serve as a measure of the opportunities open to our youths.”

40% in 3 subjects, one of which should be a home language; 30% in 3 other subjects. Higher Education requirements: Higher Certificate 40% for 3 subjects, one of which must be a home language; 30% for 3 subjects; May fail (less than 30%) a 7th subject; further assessment dependent on institution. Diploma 40% in 4 subjects, one of which must be a home language; South Africa’s reported matric pass rate history 30% in remaining subjects; Cannot fail (less than 30%) any subjects. Bachelor Degree 50% or more in 4 subjects; 30% remaining subjects; Must have more than 40% in home language; by now that women grow breasts? It is like us being fascinated at how grown men lack breasts. We seriously should be able to go outside topless and not cause a stir — men do it and surprise-surprise, no one dies. Problems with the regulation of the boob (which is truly just the regulation of the female body) must have been part of what inspired the burn-the-bra idea during the Women’s Liberation Movement, although we do actually quite love our bras. These things are miraculous! If you are thinking out there that “boys will be boys”, you too are

Specifically, the final announced number is meant only to show how many pupils managed to get access to further education and at which level. Further, this final statistic is affected by a number of other forces – such as the number of pupils writing; the subject spread amongst pupils; as well as top-performing schools skewing the average.

An illusion and a fraud

The matric pass rate showed a near miraculous increase under the Zuma leadership – hitting an all-time high of 78,2% in 2013. While many government officials are celebrating this growth, many academics and educational experts warn against associating the matric pass rate growth with a healthy education system. Theuns Eloff, former vicechancellor at North-West University, said that the matric pass rate which increased from 60,6% in 2009 to 78,2% in 2013 is an illusion. Eloff said that there are many

the problem. How about “girls will be girls and grow breasts” for a change? Here is a cool 2015 resolution for all boob-starers freaking the comfort out of us out there: you will stop staring at women’s chests. It is really simple — look away. And no, this is not to annihilate your sexuality heterosexual men. Anything sexual you do with another person — even with your eyes (ex-

cept maybe with your mind) — should be through consent and preferably in a private space; not while standing at an ATM queue. One of the issues that made waves on social media last year was breast-feeding in public. Generally, black women, mostly in townships or black homogenous areas (if I can call them), publicly breast-feed with no shame and cause very little stir, if at all. However, contrary to some arguments that were made, one can also argue, it is today not so much only a white woman’s issue. With black people making ground financially as well, middle

indicators which show that there is no improvement in the quality of education in South Africa. Free State vice-chancellor Jonathan Jansen previously said that the truth is that South Africa’s education system is a fraud. Academics and educational experts highlighted that the following issues should be considered when looking at South Africa’s matric results. More than 50% of 2013 matric learners passing are passing their individual subjects at less than 50%; Many matric learners pass with a combination of subjects that allows no entry to training or any job; The number of learners taking easier matric subjects has increased dramatically over the past few years; Thousands of learners are taking Mathematics literacy instead of Mathematics, and thus nullifying the value of other subjects in their repertoire. * BusinessTech is acknowledged for this article. class black mothers arguably increasingly become implicated in the prohibition. It is really just one of those things you look at and cannot believe how ridiculously full of itself patriarchy is. Telling women not to feed their hungry babies in public to not sexually entice men is not only a human rights violation. It is also evil and should be criminal. For heaven’s sake, control yourselves men! Or are we going to start prescribing the kind of readily available foods one should eat in public? While we are at it, we should as well tell men not to spread their legs when sitting amongst people. It looks immoral. However has this gone un-rebuked for so long?

Maake’s fate hangs in the balance

Is there an organised attempt to squash any legal or disciplinary action against Mr Tim Maake, the municipal manager of the Mopani District Municipality? This is the million dollar question... Maake, who is probably Mopani’s most controversial senior official, was arrested

last year. The arrest took place in Lenyenye, but he does not work there, neither does he live there. So why was the arrest staged in Lenyenye, people ask. Since his arrest we have been trying to obtain more information about charges against him, but we have been unsuccessful. We have even failed in our attempts to get the name of the investigating officer and it seems to be impossible to get a case number. The latest news is that his case has been referred to the High Court in Pretoria, but yet again no further information could be obtained. Court officials from Tzaneen to Maake to Polokwane claim not to have any information or the so-called right person who has the relevant information is forever not available. During the week of Christmas we were tipped off that Maake had been suspended after a special council meeting. A councillor

of the MDM confirmed this the same night after the council meeting. However, this week the spokesperson of the MDM, Mr Tumelo Malaka, refuted any suggestion of Maake having been suspended. “The council notified Maake of the council’s intention to suspend him, meaning that he must give reasons why he should not be suspended. This came after the MDM had identified certain contraventions of regulations and negligence on Mr Maake’s part on certain issues. “He was granted a few days to reply, but failed to do so and has now asked for an extension. Mr Maake is still at work. Council is waiting for Mr Maake to give valid reasons why he should not be suspended,” Malaka said. Despite all the attempts to stop the Bulletin from obtaining information about

Maake’s situation, we can disclose that he is being investigated by the Commercial Crime Investigating Unit of the SA Police Service for fraud, corruption, racketeering and money laundering. The investigation relates to about 240 transactions to the value of more than R66 million. These transactions were entered into between the MDM and a vast number of suppliers, mainly for water affairs in the municipalities of Greater Tzaneen, Greater Giyani, Greater Letaba, Maruleng and Ba-Phalaborwa. • We will continue with our own investigations and to obtain more information about the legal action against Maake, and we will report to our readers on any new findings. — Francois Aucamp francois@bulletin.us.com

Sy was 27 jaar oud. Haar begrafnis was net na Kersdag.

Two of Unicorn’s 2014 Grade 7 sports stars were Molate Mahowa and Rirhandzu Vermeulen. Molate was awarded the Schultz Trophy for Sportsmanship (boy) and Rirhandzu received the Margie Wagner Trophy for Sportswoman of the Year, as well as the Wendy McFarlane Trophy for Sportsmanship (girl).

Dynamite comes in small packages — and nobody proves this better than Wisani Mushwana of Unicorn Primary School in Tzaneen. He excels in every sporting code in which he takes part. During Unicorn’s

prize giving, Wisani received the following awards: Senior Cricketer of the Year Trophy, the Helen Wolff Trophy for Sportsman of the Year and the award for the Best senior all-rounder in cricket. Earlier in 2014 Wisani was also named the Best senior boy hockey player and the Best senior soccer player; simultaneously. He was a key player in the Limpopo hockey, cricket and soccer teams! Unicorn wishes him well and look forward to seeing his name on the Protea’s team list.

Kwagga, Treu’s Paul! sommer 28-0! Voor in dié koor is natuurlik Kwagga Smith,

Goeie aanstelling. Groot was Oubal se ontnugtering egter toe hy ‘n paar dae later lees Treu is aangestel as verdedigingsafrigter in Jacques Nienaber se plek. Aargggh! “Toe ek gebore is, het my boetie net dierename geken, toe noem hy my Kwagga. Vandag noem nog net my ma my Albertus as sy kwaad is vir my.” — Kwagga Smith
