• Fire & Rescue Services in Mopani •

Time bomb

The fire function of the Mopani District Municipality’s Fire and Rescue Services is in such a poor state that it is being referred to as a ticking time bomb. Vehicles and equipment are in such a bad condition and so old that they can no longer be called serviceable. There is also a critical shortage of fire fighting and rescue staff and it is said that Mopani will not be able to survive a major crisis. To add insult to injury, the MDM is also in dire straits as far as money is concerned and staff have not been paid yet for January (they were supposed to have their salaries in their bank accounts on Friday 23 January). At the centre of the crisis is the MDM’s controversial municipal manager, Mr Tim Maake. His immediate suspension is now demanded by workers of the MDM. Turn to page 11 for a full and all together alarming report about the crisis of the MDM.

Vlieg is bly. Baie bly! Baie bang!

Natal, me. Sê sy: “As I conclude, I revisit the thoughts that guide my innermost conscience in the execution of my responsibilities. Visions of an ideal education system dominate my thinking. In the realm of my thought world, I wish… that our system could have graphologists who would analyse the uniqueness of each child’s handwriting and channel them accordingly… That philosophy could be a subject offered at a basic education level so that the system could produce critical thinkers; that chess lessons could be offered to all mathematics learners in order to improve their mathematical schools; and that our system could train and produce phrenologists who would study the shape of a child’s head at Grade R so that we channel the children accordingly” Genuine, Vlieglesers sal weet dat hy ‘n ding het oor die waarheid, en dis sowaar wat sy gesê het! Oor skaakspeel sal Vlieg volstaan dat

• Numerous street lights in Tzaneen are out. Peddlers do as they please and are increasing by the day. Potholes in the streets are worsening and increasing daily. Open public spaces maintenance is not done and the play equipment in parks are rusted and poses a danger to children. Trees that are felled or that died due to old age are not replaced. Walls and lampposts are littered with advertisements. Taxis stop where and when they please to pick up or drop off passengers. Motorists disregard amber and even red lights... et cetera. Can we expect order and law abidance to reign again? What do you think?

Red ‘n nasie!

Sê jou sê

• Talle straatligte in Tzaneen is dood.

Low sulphur diesel now in Tzaneen

The future of the Tzaneen Dam will be in the spotlight today, when councillors of the GTM and certain role players will discuss a resource management plan to control the utilization of the water resource and the surrounding environment. The aim is to find ways which will promote community participation and environmental sustainability of the dam, and to unlock socioeconomic potential of the water resource for recreational use.

New vehicles for Tzaneen SAPS The SAPS say they are now at the top of their game after a number of new vehicles have been allocated to all police stations in the Tzaneen Cluster. SAPS Tzaneen Cluster spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe promises that with the new vehicles, the police’s response time will improve. “We received a fleet of vehicles; and we will make sure the vehicles are not abused and used for personal purposes,” he told Bulletin. Ngoepe urges members of the community to report any incidence of abuse of Police vehicles that they notice. Rethabile Maake

Valentine’s

Owners of diesel vehicles will be delighted to hear that ultra low sulphur diesel (ULSD) is now available at Sasol filling stations in Tzaneen. ULSD is, in a nutshell, cleaner diesel that has been refined so that its sulphur content is a maximum of fifteen (15) parts per million (ppm) or less. The ULSD that is now available in Tzaneen has a rating of only 10 ppm. This is at least 97% cleaner than the standard highway-use diesel fuel, which contains an average of 500 ppm of sulphur. Sulphur, a natural part of the crude oil from which diesel fuel is derived, is one of the key causes of particulates or soot in diesel. Soot is the main culprit of diesel engines’ noxious black exhaust fumes, and is among the prime contributors to air pollution. ULSD is thus aimed at lowering diesel engines’ harmful exhaust emissions and improving air quality. It has been the standard in Europe for several years. ULSD enables the new generation of diesel vehicles to meet the same strict emission standards as gasoline-powered vehicles.

Great news for Letaba FPA’s members The Letaba Fire Protection Association recently signed a seven year contract with the Working on Fire Programme. Being in partnership for the past ten years, this contract confirms a mutual understanding between the two parties. Part of the contract states certain production outputs to be completed during the year by the Working on Fire team. These include making fire breaks, prescribed burning, invasive vegetation clearing, manual fuel load reduction, road maintenance, soil erosion and conservation activities. Members of the Letaba Fire Protection Association are welcome to make use of this service. Members do not pay the labour fees; only the transport cost from the base to the farm and back. It works on a first call first serve basis. They can contact the base manager, Ms Nicole Ramokone, on 082 077 6207 or base@letabafire.co.za for bookings.

Challenging the law(s) Not so long ago, during an informal discussion in our offices, as senior Bulletin journalist expressed grave concern about “the fact that South Africa has become a lawless society” — only to be corrected by a junior colleague saying that “we have laws and thus it can’t be a matter of lawlessness, but rather of people not respecting (or fearing) the laws of the country”. This truth — that people seem to have lost all fear of or respect for the law — is to be witnessed in ou area as well, on a daily basis. Motorists, developers, contractors, builders, hawkers, pedestrians... name them, don’t hesitate to ignore laws and by-laws and law enforcement officers (those with clean hands!) are being challenged head-on when they dare to apply the law or to promote orderliness. We have indeed become a law challenging society and the results (as have just been seen in Soweto and other townships in the Jo’burg area) could further destroy our democracy. At the heart of the problem is political leaders’ lack of will to promote respect for the law, and to have the law being enforced withou fear or favour. It’s saddening to see a great country being slowly ruined by a citizenry who abuse the law, evade the law and simply ignore it in on almost every level of society.

It was such a beautiful Tuesday morning… that it persuaded Elder and Sister Campbell of the Church of the Latter Day Saints in Circle Road, Tzaneen, to give the special information sign on the pavement a new coating, without knowing of the presence of a curious cameraman.

Kontak haar by 084 414 6166 of 015 307 5029.

So much is said today Do we still have room for Ladies & Gentlemen in society? about the character of So I have heard a couple too many people (men) say they hear feminists and the gender equality nonsense, but they would still like women to be ladies. This made me think, are these gendered social classes still relevant in society and importantly, what does it mean to be a Lady or a Gentleman? I use capital initials to separate the classes from the general reference to all women or men. Back in the days — at least as far back as the 1700s, a gentleman, according to the literature of the time, was essentially a man with a considerable income (middle class).

Bron: Classen, D. 2010. a gentleman; however, back then, the character was arguably meaningless without financial back-up. For example, early in Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield, David tries to console little Em’ly, an orphan, about the loss of her parents by relating the loss of his own father. To show David the fault of his comparison, little Em’ly says, “Besides, your father was a gentleman and your mother is a lady; and my father was a fisherman and my mother was a fisherman’s daughter, and my uncle Dan is a fisherman.”

Jesus’ life here on earth can be divided into five phases: Infancy Preparation Popularity Passion Risen Life If we use these phases as we study the life of Christ here on earth, perhaps, we can better understand what He actually did for us. We were not there during His Infancy, Preparation, Popularity or Passion, but we are part of His Risen life, if we have accepted Christ into our lives. He gave us the guidelines during His life here on earth. He lived on earth as a human and therefore He experienced all we experience, but He believed in His Father and the direction He gave Him. We too need to believe in the same direction that He gives us. This takes a tremendous amount of faith, which for many of us is or seems impossible. We are living in a corrupt world, a world where there

are so many pressures to conform to what is popular at that specific time, otherwise we may be considered as not “with it”. Yet with all we receive from our Heavenly Father, we can still achieve this and much more. We need only to believe we have the talents which He gave us to grow in faith. He is with us every step of the way. Jesus was also considered by some as “weird”. He often did not fit in with those who considered themselves the “elite”, so we need not to worry what others think of us, provided we are following Jesus’ example. NY also bans styrofoam New York mayor Bill de Blasio announced a ban on the sale and use of styrofoam cups, food containers and packing material. polystyrene (EPS) is not a recyclable product. The new law prohibits food service establishments, stores and manufacturers from possessing, selling or offering single-service EPS foam articles or polystyrene loosefill packaging in that city. De Blasio was reported to be optimistic about the ban’s environmental impact. It is expected to keep nearly 30 000 tonnes of EPS waste out of the city’s landfills and streets. The Uncle Dan (Mr Peggoty) little Em’ly refers to here is a very kind and selfless man who adopted her and another orphan, Ham, respectively when their parents died at sea. He lives in a small boat-turnedhouse by the sea in Yarmouth, where he fishes and takes care of his family. The family includes a Mrs Gummidge, the widow of his once boat partner who also died at sea. However, although in this case Mr

state by 2014. The common styrofoam container is incredibly effective at keeping warm things warm and cool things cool and it is extraordinarily cheap. “Studies have shown that styrofoam accounts for as much as 15% of stormwater litter, and it’s the second-most prevalent type of beach debris. Quite apart from the disposal problems it presents to local authorities, due to its light weight, the material breaks down into beads and can be carried long distances on winds and ocean currents, wreaking havoc on wildlife.”

Peggoty — the brother of David’s maidservant (Clara) Peggoty — is “as good as gold and as true as steel,” as Peggoty describes him, he is too poor to be a Gentleman. It is thus not by habit that David introduces Mr Murdstone — a very “grave”, “cold” and abusive business-man who later marries his mother — as a Gentleman. The term was by many means a classist term and had very little to do with one’s good demeanour. A Lady, on the other hand, was a woman married to a man of high rank. The books of Jane Austen ex-

tensively discuss the nature of Ladies. Moreover, perhaps unlike Gentlemen, Ladies mainly subscribed to a certain air of demeanour. In Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth is criticised by the ladies of Netherfield for walking a long distance in mud to go and attend to her sick sister. This was arguably in scrutiny of her eligibility to be married to a noble man and become a Lady. Ladies were instead somewhat immobile. They would organise their households, but they had servants to do the physical work. Are the terms things we still want to embrace in society?

SLC pupils attend international conference

SCHOOL NEWS | SKOLE NUUS This photo of the Stanford Lake College group wat taken at Shibok, an ancient castle in Jordan. Seen here are Atiyah Kalla, Ms Shirley Jack, Mr Denis Jack, Naledi Kgosana, Ammaarah Tayob and Reneilwe Komape.

Five Gr 11 pupils and Mr Denis and Ms Shirley Jack from Stanford Lake College attended the International Round Square Conference in Jordan. The Gr 11’s who attended are Atiyah Kalla, Reneilwe Komape, Stuart Lunt, Ammaarah Tayob and Naledi Kgosana. Al Salamu Alaikum — Peace Be Upon You. This is a common greeting in the Middle-East and the theme for the unforgettable and, unfortunately, ephemeral Round Square International Conference, set in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan — a part of the world laden with conflict. The seemingly bewildering theme for the conference served to raise the anticipation of SLC’s delegation; as if countless hours dreaming of the endless shopping to be

done and getting lost in the city of Dubai during the preconference tour hadn’t already done so! The hospitable King’s Academy not only met our anticipations, but surpassed any and every expectation in the most spectacular of ways, as the hosts of the conference. The amazing and thought-provoking speakers offered new and different perspectives of Middle-Eastern conflict, eye-opening and enjoyable service projects, as well as the amazing opportunity to learn from and make tons of new friends from around the world. These were only a few of the aspects of the conference which we experienced whilst enjoying the most fun times! It was all made absolutely memorable.

Duiwelskloof Primary School named their most considerate pupils in each class during 2014 at the end of last year. Seen here are, at the back: Reinette Jacobs (best in the school), Kyle Shulman, Shibu Ramango, Janco Coetzee, Lati Makoro, Mechane Toy and Mothibedi Motau. In the middle row are Tabassum Bhuiyan, Kholofelo Moloto, Nickie Venter, Tetelo Moketla, Léna Basson and Motsiri Sekgota, and in the front are Pierre Geyser and Keratliwe Mohale.

Stanford Lake College is proud of Conrad Schmidt (Grade 11 in 2014). He finished in the top 1% of pupils nationally in last year’s IeBT tests in both mathematics and science.

The radio station runs a campaign every year in January, to help underprivileged pupils get uniforms and essential study material. According to the radio station’s mar-

keting manager, Ms Vongi Nkanyani, most of the classrooms at the school had no doors or windows before the station embarked on a campaign to find donors to help them fix the classrooms. It fixed the school with help from the correctional services, which provided free labour.

Pupils at Nhluvuko High School make for a nice picture of uniformity in their spanking new uniforms, donated by a radio station.

Substance abuse explained

not the case anymore as children now move straight to their drug of choice. Substance abuse continues to escalate, but is surfacing more often as abusers become aware that help is available. The Substance Abuse Prevention Centre enjoys the services of dr Gary Middleton, (with dr André Botes in an advisory capacity), therapist Ms Doreen Lemmer, the director of mental health in Limpopo Mr Carel Mouton, occult therapist Ms Debbie Kayser and Ms Anza van Vuuren, previously the department of education’s representative at SAPC. The centre is not an institution where patients are absorbed into a system. It works on an out-patient basis and, through referrals, the person is directed to the specialist most suited to his needs. Everything is highly confidential and all other health care professionals endorse this centre. Geldenhuys is available on 015 307 3790. — Sue Ettmayr

During coming weeks the Bulletin will feature in-depth articles on substance abuse. Leading the discussion is well known Tzaneen pharmacist Mr Pieter Geldenhuys, widely known as Piet Pille — a name that stuck after a quirky moment on the Letaba rugby field years ago. Piet Pille was appointed Limpopo representative of the now defunct Drugwise council in 1991. Since then he’s continued to be involved with substance abuse and, together with a knowledgeable inter-disciplinary team of specialists — called the Substance Abuse Prevention Centre (SAPC) — he continues to be the first port of call for substance abusers and their families throughout the Limpopo province.

The loving parent-child relationship needs to be augmented with the PACT concept — Parent And Child Talk. It becomes ultra important to the welfare of the child to spend time with his parents around the dining or kitchen table, talking and interacting. Quality time around the table creates the opportunity for parents to really get to know their child, and vice versa. Show your support A “Coffee for Marcelle Day” will be held at Twig’s, 4 Boundary Street, Tzaneen on Saturday 7th February at 10a.m. Twig’s owner, Ms Dale Kenney, says it’s a morning to show that the province cares about its people. T-shirts and mugs inscribed with the words “Coffee for Marcelle Day” will be sold and the public is asked to bring banners, presents and messages of sup-

port for Marcelle. Marcelle van Vuuren (23), a well known and loved hair stylist in Tzaneen, had a head-on-collision near Soekmekaar in December. Passenger, Ms Carla Swart, died. Marcelle was transported to a Pretoria hospital, where she’s still under the watchful care of plastic surgeon. She had both legs amputated above the knee with severe back and internal injuries. She’s had several operations and has had painful debriding sessions on her stumps and other areas.

‘Maake must go!’ Fire Tim Maake, or suspend him. We couldn’t care less. We just want our money. So said the secretary of Samwu (the SA Municipal Workers Union) in Mopani, Pastor Mafumo, yesterday. He was leading a big group of MDM workers to the offices of the MDM in Tzaneen. Later in the day they handed a memorandum to the MDM’s mayor, the chief whip and the speaker. According to a report from the MDM the January salaries could not be paid due to unforeseen reasons. These reasons allegedly include an accusation that money owed to the MDM by die Limpopo Government has not been paid. However, our information is that the government has refused to assist with any payments to the MDM, until the situation with municipal manager Tim Maake has been resolved. The MDM started a process to suspend Maake a number of weeks ago, but until yesterday afternoon nothing further has

tergebruikswet.

happened. The MDM followed the wrong procedures when they suspended him two weeks ago. Allegations of mismanagement and corruption in the MDM have been doing the rounds for about the last two to three years. A senior member of the ANC in Mopani, who understandably does not want to be identified, said to us “Maake knows too much” and “if he sinks, a number of high profile people will also sink.” According to this seemingly well informed person Maake will accept a golden handshake (of a substantial amount), but he will also demand exemption from prosecution. Maake was indeed arrested in Lenyenye last year and his case has allegedly been referred to the High Court in Pretoria. Details of the case and the charges against him seem to be kept top secret and efforts by the Bulletin to obtain more information have so far been unsuccessful. — Francois Aucamp francois@bulletin.us.com

— Louis Roux louis@bulletin.us.com

Merensky klop Kempies

Oppie Kassie On the Telly

More speel BV tuis teen Alberton se Hoërskool Marais Viljoen.

Albei spanne speel more teen PHS.

Stanford Lake enjoyed a successful Interhouse The Interhouse Athletics day at Stanford Lake College started very misty and a little damp, but by mid-morning, the sun came out and the weather conditions for this event were perfect. At the end of the day dr Marika Voigt handed over the trophies to the following top achievers: Junior Victor Ludorum: Ruben Caroto; Junior Victrix Ludorum: Reese Bain; Senior Victor Ludorum: Mfumo Mongwe; Senior Victrix Ludorum: Anke Vaughan.

Nuwe ster vonkel Christelle Coetzer.

SLC just too good Last Friday Stanford Lake College played cricket against Northern Academy (NA) in Polokwane and enjoyed a good win that didn’t come easy though. Stanford won the toss and elected to bat first. They got off to a good start, with Conrad Schmidt making 27 and Matthew Maritz 45. Declan Taggart also scored a valuable 46 in the middle of the innings. They ended with a reasonable score of 168 off twenty overs. NA pushed Stanford right to the end and scored 141 in reply. They were in touch with the run rate all the way to the last few overs. Jason Wright bowled a match winning spell, taking two wickets in his four overs and only conceding a meagre twelve runs.

Stanford’s 1st team members who played against Northern Academy were, in front: Hlanhla Mohlaba, Matthew Maritz and Graeme Harty and behind them Declan Taggart, Justin Trueman, Estian Botha, Christian Schmidt, Bryce Reed, Conrad Schmidt, Bradley Penrose, Jason Wright and Mr Shane Friedrichs (coach).

6. “It’s fine to celebrate succes, but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.” — Bill Gates
