—Louis Roux louis@bulletin.us.com
Audit by Irrigation Board Last week Bulletin reported about alleged serious problems regarding the affairs of the Pusela Irrigation Board (PIB). We stated that we couldn’t speak to the chairman of the PIB, Mr Nino Burelli, since he was out of town. Burelli has upon his return submitted the following statement on behalf of the PIB, regarding the PIB’s affairs: “The Pusela Irrigation Board has noted the content of your article published on 20 February 2015. The Board has no intention to involve the media in its current on-going investigative processes and to base any of its decisions upon speculative statements made in the media. The affairs of the Board, dealt with by its erstwhile chairman, Mr Jenke Nagel, are currently responsibly being investigated by a firm of auditors. Said audit runs concurrently with legal processes. Upon receipt of a full audit report, the Board will deal fully with all findings in the appropriate forum.”

Vlieg brei uit (verder op Ingels): Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) are the best way of determining whether a cause-effect relationship exists between a treatment and an outcome. Well designed RCT’s have the following important features: • randomisation: patients should be randomly allocated to placebo (dummy treatment) or treatment groups — this ensures that there are no systematic differences between patient groups that may affect the outcome; • controlled conditions: aside from the treatment given, all patients should be treated identically, whether in placebo or treatment groups — this excludes other factors from influencing the outcome; • intention to treat analysis: patients are analysed within their allocated group even if they did not experience the intervention — this maintains the advantages of randomisation which may be lost if patients withdraw or fail to comply; • double blinding: patients and clinicians should remain unaware of which patients received placebo or treatment until the study is completed — this eliminates the possibility of preconceived views of patients and clinicians affecting the outcome; and

Natuurlike middels is soos voormelde aspirin.
Our expectations of the evidence base relevant to government policies on the provision of homeopathy are straightforward. We would expect the Government to have a view on the efficacy of homeopathy so as to inform its policy on the NHS funding and provision of homeopathy. Such a view should be based on the best available evidence, that is, rigorous randomised controlled trials and metaanalyses and systematic reviews of RCT’s. If the effects of homeopathy can be primarily attributed to the placebo effect, we would expect the Government to have a view on the ethics of prescribing placebos. 2. We conclude that the principle of like-cures-like is theoretically weak. It fails to provide a credible

yses conclusively demonstrate that homeopathic products perform no better than placebos. 5. We regret that advocates of homeopathy, choose to rely on, and promulgate, selective approaches to the treatment of the evidence base as this risks confusing or misleading the public, the media and policy-makers. 6. There has been enough testing of homeopathy and plenty of evidence showing that it is not efficacious. 7. We do not doubt that homeopathy makes some patients feel better. However, patient satisfaction can occur through a placebo effect alone and therefore does not prove the efficacy of homeopathic interventions. 8. When doctors prescribe placebos, they risk damaging the trust that exists between them and their patients. 9. For patient choice to be real choice, patients must be adequately informed to understand the implications of treatments. For homeopathy this would certainly require an explanation that homeopathy is a placebo. When this is not done, patient choice is meaningless. When it is done, the effectiveness of the placebo — that is, homeopathy — may be diminished. 10. We conclude that placebos should not be routinely prescribed on the NHS. The funding of homeopathic hospitals — hospitals that specialise in the administration of placebos — should not continue, and NHS doctors should not refer patients to homeopaths.
GTM council to reply to questions Seven Tzaneen hair stylists from seven different hair salons got together in one place for one day last year. Cutting clients’ hair for the day realised R4 000 and the proceeds went to the TzaneenLions Club. When Ms Marcelle van Vuuren, a 23-year-old local hair stylist, was involved in a car accident in December, the Lions decided to donate the money to her. Marcelle is
booked for another ten weeks of rehabilitation in Pretoria. Her amputated leg stumps have healed well. At the handing over ceremony were Mss Jenny Weideman, Ilona Geldenhuys, Christa Koekemoer, Messrs Martin Froise (Lions president) and Dawie van Vuuren (Marcelle’s father), Mss Delize de Bruyn, Tineke Bam, Louise du Preez and Rachélle Venter.
Water Shortages in Nkowankowa Residents of Nkowankowa were without water the past weekend due to technical problems experienced with one of the three pump machines at the Nkowankowa water treatment plant. The plant, which is under the management of Lepelle Northern Water, was unable to meet the water demand due to the malfunctioning of the pump machine. The problem, according
to Lepelle Northern Water, has since been resolved and water supply has been restored in most parts if not the entire township. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Neville Ndlala, says the municipality distributed water through water tankers as a temporary solution in an endeavor to alleviate the effect of the interrup-
tion. “However, due to the growing demands for water and residential expansion water supply will obviously be strained,” he said. Ndlala appeals to all residents to use water sparingly and cut off watering gardens. “Residents should also repair leaking pipes,” he concluded.

Kgapane Hospital’s fun run/walk In celebration of the world TB month, Kgapane Hospital will this year host its annual TB Awareness fun run/walk on 20 March. Walking is free, simple and one of the easiest ways to lose weight and become healthier. The 5 km fun run/ walk is also aimed to encourage a healthy lifestyle. The hospital held the fun run/walk last year on March 23. The event was sponsored by amongst
others Misty River Spur (Tzaneen) and ZZ2. The then hospital’s Acting CEO, Dr MJ Selathla, encouraged participants to walk regularly because it helps to reduce the risks of chronic illnesses such as asthma. He further said regular walking also helps to reduce back pain, blood pressure and strengthens the heart and lungs. — Mapula Euphodia Ramonaka
A list of crucial questions to the council of the GTM by DA councillor René Pohl could be cleared up at today’s council meeting, after it was ignored for a second time during the special council meeting two weeks ago. The acting speaker, Mr Abram Masila, explained that it was a special meeting in which only matters of importance were to be discussed, although the questions were part of the agenda. A furious Pohl insisted that the refusal to reply to her questions be recorded as unacceptable. Among the issues were the “suspension” of the legal adviser, Mr Monyela, the future plans for Tzaneen’s so-called bush mechanics, the illegal hawker under the R71 bridge and an alleged payment of R1,8 million without explanation.
Referring to the illegal hawker under the R71 bridge, the DA wants to know if the hawker receives privileged treatment by not being removed since 2012 and if the hawker’s husband is an employee in the GTM’s waste department. The DA also points out that illegal hawkers in the same area increased to more than five close to the traffic signs that prohibit trading there. Pohl wants to know if the GTM is aware of the fact that in case of a road accident caused by vehicles stopping there to buy from the illegal hawkers, the GTM can be held liable for damages and costs. After the meeting Pohl expressed her dissatisfaction and said answers to these and other questions will hopefully be supplied at the next council meeting.

Hier is Simpson se verkoopspan by ‘n Adam: Links voor staan me Mary Ramagoma en agter haar staan mnre Gerrie Oosthuizen en Fannie Baloyi. Regs agter is mnr Eric Rikhotso, me Cynthia Nkwashu en Simpsons se verkoopsbestuurder, mnr Martin Slabber.
Girls to be vaccinated The department of health started the campaign to vaccinate girls against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This year all girls who are nine years and older will be targeted. Parents are requested to give consent for their children to be vaccinated as this will reduce their chances of developing cervical cancer in later stages of their lives.

‘My pa se seun se pa se vrou’ Of: My vrou se man se broer se skoonsuster se skelmpie…

No political will Tzaneen, like many other towns in the country, has become a place where a free for all situation is being allowed by the local authority. Tzaneen has no traffic plan, no clear parks plan, no clear plan to regulate informal traders, no plan to save electricty (despite the central government’s appeal to all local authorities to implement a savings plan), no clear plan to promote hygiene in the streets and on the pavements where chickens are slaughtered and raw meat sold, no plan to make it safe for hikers (and motorists), especially along the R71 and in Sapeko Avenue, no plan to enforce inspections on building sites etcetera. If there are plans for the short, medium and long terms, they are being kept top secret — and nothing is done to implement them. So where are we going and what can we expect? Chaos! In fact, we already experience chaos in many aspects. Taxis rule when it comes to traffc discipline. Hawkers rule in the streets and simply challenge the trade zones. Illegal (not registered) builders rule on building sites. Etcetera. There is clearly no political will with the town’s councillors and/or management team to provide a disciplined and orderly environment to residents.
Skandelik!
How often do we hear the expression “in the good old days” and many believe that it was a better time. But is this really true, or do we only want to believe so? There was the great depression, the World wars, oppression in countries, hatred for one another, police brutality, etc., yet many survived. With today’s modern life and the expansion of not only technology but cities and people not much has changed for the good, yet we can survive. But we all need to have faith even if we do not believe in Christ as our Saviour, we need to have faith in what we do, the products we use and our ability to get through tough times. I believe that only God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit living and working in us things can be made simpler and that if we love one another as God
loves us we can get through all the troubles of this life a lot easier. But, and there is always a but, we need to have faith in Him. This is not an easy task as we have so many distractions now-a-days, technology has given us many tools, it is in how we use these tools where the problem lies, we need to us them wisely, not only for our good, but for the good of others. We must also realise that God gave us the ability to develop these tools and I believe that when we use these tools for the improvement of others, we will see a change in this world. Once again I need to emphasise the example that Jesus set for us when He was on earth, His love for everyone no matter who or what they were. By following His example we can achieve all our goals. Blessings.

Dissipline Va n d a g verskyn die negende aflewering in ‘n reeks deur Me Margie van Tonder oor spelterapie. Vandag vra sy of jy jou kind ken. Kontak haar by 084 414 6166 of 015 307 5029 vir navrae. “Discipline is not what we do in order that our children will love us; it is what we do because we love our children.“ — Ron Morrish.
“Rules without relationship lead to rebellion.” — Josh McDowell.

I am no EFF supporter; however, I doubt the same speaker, backed by the same party, would remain unrepentant if her victims were white It is racism A coloured community reportedly protesting against having black teachers in their schools, whereas they have no problem with white teachers (as reported), is racism It is racism when black faces are often hard to find or sidelined on pictures of a multi-racial school
It is racism when black populated areas are an afterthought on service delivery matters When the abrupt close of water pipes for more than a day are not even news worthy When we are expected to all of a sudden go without power for a long period of time The slack law enforcement in our areas It is racism when we are expected to understand, to make do ••• It is all racism Deeply embedded in society, it is the life I know
To fight to be taken seriously because I am black My being is too dark; I am sometimes mistaken for an inconvenient mass in society It is a system Orchestrated through what can be euphemistically described as an unbelievable level of ignorance and self-centredness Continually perpetuated by the fear of the discomfort in discussing it ••• I know there is a lot of unfairness in this world Racial prejudice is a big one Perhaps the world is too old to change Or just reluctant I hate it when I am told it is all in my mind

The dangers of alcohol explained Everything in moderation is an often used mantra. However, when it’s no longer in moderation it becomes abuse. Alcohol is legal as well as available on almost every street corner and at every social function. South Africans quaff such copious amounts of alcohol that many writers and poets have exposed this national malaise. Walk into any home and the first question besides the “how are you?” pleasantry is, “What would you like to drink?” My cousin, a retired anaesthetist in his early 80’s, was in hospital with kidney problems. I visited him and queried why such a fit man had landed up in such a bad way. He replied, “I became an alcoholic after retirement.” Speechless and with my jaw dropped open
In today’s article in Bulletin’s series on substance abuse, brought to our readers in association with Tzaneen’s Substance Abuse Prevention Centre (SAPC), the danger of alcohol abuse is highlighted.
When alcoholics reach rock bottom...
Wine tasting in the Western Cape is a major tourist attraction.
he explained, “As you well know, coming from the Cape, I enjoyed a glass or two of good wine. However, once I retired that one or two glasses became a bottle a day. Then I added whiskey to the mix. This continued for a good few years until my health collapsed.” It was a wake-up call for my cousin; he pulled himself together and stopped drinking.
Alcohol is particularly dangerous for the elderly as they lose their balance when drunk and can break limbs when falling. A friend in her early 70’s, who also turned to alcohol on retiring, was found unconscious next to her bed. She’d been lying on the floor for three days. Her family rallied around her, provided counselling and lots of love. She has been sober now for almost a year. What happens to those who don’t or can’t
stop drinking? For them it’s a slow decline in health and looks until the inevitable shutting down of organs and painful death. An alcoholic mother of two young children, in her mid 40’s, was admitted to hospital with stomach pains. Her veins had collapsed, her skin was jaundiced and purple, she could no longer swallow and was emaciated except for a very bloated stomach. Touching that stomach felt like a thousand little men with pickaxes trying to break the skin to get out. The pain of one’s liver failing is excruciating. This particular mother was dead 24 hours later. Alcoholics not only destroy themselves but the disease affects loved ones and friends. Children of alcoholics are particularly vulnerable as they become insecure adults and are often not able to sustain jobs or relationships. They are psychologically damaged from witnessing the parental abuse and it’s particularly bad if the mother, the nurturer, is the alcoholic parent. SAPC pharmacist of Tzaneen, Mr Piet ‘Pille’ Geldenhuys, says, “Merely Geldenhuys wanting to stop drinking isn’t enough to stop this downward spiral. Yes, the will to stop is a vital aspect, but so are the right skills, a solid support system, and most probably professional help”. — Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com

Volkswagen is unstoppable on their way to be a clear market leader by 2018. An exciting new range of vehicles — both passenger and commercial — will be aimed at dominance in the worldwide market by 2018. Dealerships around the world will be refurbished or built to welcome customers to a well arranged and designed environment. This will coincide with the introduction of an extended range of quality and stylish redesigned vehicles as well as new models that will take VW further on the road to become a world leading car manufacturer.
Gearing up for the future Lannie Motors Tzaneen’s buildings in Agatha Street will undergo major refurbishing in the next couple of months, in order to comply with the new modular showroom and office design for Volkwagen’s worldwide new branding. We thus apologise to our existing customers, as well as prospective customers for any inconvenience that might be caused by building activities on our premises. We will try our level best to minimize possible inconvenience and we appeal to our loyal customers and prospective buyers to exercice patience as the project and building activities are executed. The main building, in the architect’s impression at the top, will be done first. For a relatively short time we will operate from the building across the street (above), which will after completion of the project be the division for commercial vehicles. We will then move back to the main building, which will in future be the centre for passenger vehicles, whilst the commercial centre is being refurbished. We will keep the public informed of our progress and should any delay, for whatever reason, cause a change in our time schedule, we will anounce same through the media. Thank you — Management

Die eerste span sal egter so gou as moontlik hul wedstryd teen Eldoraigne wil
vergeet.
Africa congress held at Stanford Stanford Lake College had the honour of hosting the Round Square Africa Conference for 14/15-year-olds. This exciting four-day conference brought together students from eighteen Round Square member schools from throughout Africa. The 135 student delegates and 32 adults were treated to three exceptional key note speakers over the four days, as well as the chance to attend workshops and various organised leadership, outreach and adventure activities. The theme of the conference was ‘Dream an’ Do’, based on the name of SLC’s outdoor programme, with emphasis being on encouraging all the delegates, young and old alike, to live out their dreams. The conference was led by the SLC Gr 11 pupils with the support of the school’s staff. The three key note talks included Mr Andrew Desmet, section ranger of the Letaba Section of the Kruger National Park, who spoke of his personal journey and fight against Rhino poaching in the Park; Day two saw Mr Arthur Preston, the Principal of Elkanah House Senior Primary in Cape Town, take the stage. His humorous and entertaining talk on social media kept the delegates enthralled. Finally, Mr John McInroy, founder of ‘Red Sock Friday’ and the Unogwaja Challenge, addressed the delegates. ton-Smith who, on not being able to afford the train ticket to the start of the Comrades, took ten days to cycle the journey before then running the Comrades Marathon on the 11th day. John’s heart-warming and uplifting message of hope and camaraderie will remain with the delegates for years to come. As part of the conference the delegates were also challenged by six outdoor activities which they did in groups in rotation over the four days. These included the Magoebaskloof canopy tour and abseiling; a visit to the organic dairy at Wegraakbosch; a service project at Glenshiel Farm School, where the delegates built a library and paved a playground area; and also activities on and around the lake at Stanford. Fears were conquered and team-building was paramount throughout these activities. The conference had a significant impact on each child in terms of developing awareness and understanding of international relations and issues affecting our continent, our communities and the environment. It was an ideal opportunity for students to interact with others from the Round Square Africa member schools, and a chance for students to become better acquainted with the ideals of the Round Square organization. SLC thank all the generous sponsors who played a huge role in making the conference a memorable and enjoyable reality.

taba is.
Vir navrae: Johan Steyn by 083 287 5839 en Pieter Human by 082 553 5887.
“No one can resist the idea of a crippled genius.” — Stephen Hawking
Ashley Murray, a teacher at Dr Annecke Primary School in Letsitele, took part in the Limpopo mountain bike qualifying championships at Tshipise and achieved some impressive results. In the 50 km road race she was the second lady home, she came first in the Elite Ladies race and fifth overall (males and females) in a time of 1 hour and 28 minutes. In the 25 km mountain bike race she was the first lady home in her age group Elite Ladies and eleventh overall. She completed the 20 km road time trial in 37minutes, despite a strong side-wind.
