Local netball star for SA team One of Merensky High School’s star netball players, Mpho Mokoena, was recently chosen as one of the top 35 u.17 players at the SA All Ages Schools Tournament. Merensky is extremely proud of Mpho (and so are all of us), a member of the Limpopo team at the tournament. If one takes into account that only three girls from Limpopo were chosen for the prestigious national team, the achievement is really something special. Two hundred and forty u.17 girls took to the courts and played their hearts out. There were no less than twenty four teams per age group. SASN (SA Schools Netball) is now searching for a sponsor to send these girls on a tour to Australia, for coaching sessions and a few games.

Yet another illegal initiation school, more deaths and parents who have been “forced” to pay (up to R1 500) for the delicate and dangerous “operation” have caused an uproar in Limpopo and more so in the Mopani district; especially after another illegal school was discovered in the Modjadji area. Now people demand ruthless action against illegal initiation schools to be taken. Glacier Nkwashu envestigated and reports on page 3.

• “Boys are hi-jacked in the streets; it’s only about money”
Initiation abuses upset parents Parents at Bolobedu were forced into paying R1 550 to secure the release of their children at an illegal initiation school. More parents at Ramotshinyadi near Modjadjiskloof say they had to make emergency plans to pay for the release of their initiates last Friday, to avoid traditional complications after the school with 158 initiates was shut down on Wednesday evening. “We were warned that fighting or questioning tradition will bring bad luck, and it could result in things not going well for our children. Remember, rituals are performed at these mountains schools and our children’s flesh and blood is out there. Regardless of what we’ve been told is a myth or reality, we don’t want our kids to suffer from complications caused by us (parents) refusing to pay the fee,” said a father who didn’t want to be named. The mountain school was officially shut down at the village by the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders (LHTL) on Wednesday and parents were given until Friday to take their children to hospital. Between Wednesday and Friday, the parents of 158 kids were allegedly told by the school’s leaders and local traditionalists that payment of
R1 550 was still expected from them, because “the job” had already been executed in full. “We were told its tradition. We were forced to pay,” said a mother of a 14-year-old boy. However, the LHTL’s Kgoshi Malesela Dikgale said illegal initiation schools are not allowed to claim money from parents. “In fact they are not supposed to get anything. This is most unfortunate. The school’s leaders got what they were after, namely money,” said the Kgoshi. At the time of closing the school, Dikgale warned that no single hospital could take in the big number of young boys and he asked parents to take the kids to different hospitals. He said the initiates included under aged boys, which is against the law. The principal of the illegal school was ambushed by the LHTL after local leaders and community members raised an alarm. Dikgale said all the kids were in good condition and “this is not a police case”. His main concern was that the young man (principal) ran the school illegally. “We don’t want this kind of thing in our communities,” he said. He said since the beginning of the season, sixteen schools have already been shut down in the province. Mmatseko Lebepe, the mother of an eleven-year-old boy,

told Bulletin that her son went to the illegal school without her permission and she was worried after she heard the principal didn’t have a permit to operate the school. “I heard from others that my son was tricked into going there by people who earned commission each time they took kids there. If children want to go to these schools, they must do so voluntarily and shouldn’t be forced,” she said. Another parent said: “I am a supporter of culture but I am not a supporter of death. This sort of thing ends in our children dying, because the operators are inexperienced,” she said. A father of two said he’s happy the kids were released, because they were “hi-jacked” from the streets, just for money. “This is proof that these people are just there to make money,” he said. The school principal, one Nakampe Mohale (25), couldn’t be reached for comment.

Mischief or blindness? Are the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s councillors a lot of mischief mongers, are they plain blind or are they so sucked into party politics and next year’s municipal elections that they can’t see the wood for the trees? Whatever their problem, they stand to lose more than they could ever hope to gain politically, by ignoring the growing disillusionment of the people who pay the rates and taxes... the money that keeps Tzaneen financially alive. Tzaneen is the financial heart beat of the GTM’s jurisdiction. If Tzaneen goes down, a large area will be in serious trouble. In fact, the rest of the GTM’s jurisdiction will be in serious trouble. What is so difficult about it that the honourables don’t realise it? Why do they allow the town’s infrastructure to deteriorate at an alarming pace? Why do they allow the informal trade to make their own laws? Why do they allow the formal sector to be terrorised to the extent that a growing number of shopkeepers and other business leaders are reconsidering their investment(s) in Tzaneen? Are they prepared to sacrifice their main income generator in order to score cheap political points? Or to make sure that they are re-elected for another free ride on the gravy train? God help this town and this district if the so-called leaders carry on to ignore the writing on the wall.

Val en Opstaan
The Greater Tzaneen Municipality is turning a blind eye and a deaf ear... whilst unlicenced informal traders are invading undesignated areas such as streets, pavements, open areas, parking bays... ignoring traffic and pedestrians’ safety. The concern of residents and formal traders in their shops are building up steam and could (sadly) lead to a confrontation that could have been and should be avoided. On this page is a condensed report of what is happening in Zimbabwe where the patience with hawkers have run out...
Psalm 37: 23-24: ”Die Here ondersteun jou. As jy val, sal jy nie bly lê nie, want die Here help jou op.” Die vraag is: Wil jy?
Zimbabwe is also fed up with hawkers
Illegal hawkers in Zimbabawe — especially in the capital city Harare — are facing the might of the law to stop them from further eroding the in Zim) has run amok and forced Pres Robert Mugabe’s country’s tax system as well as leaving shopkeepers poorer. The Greater Tzaneen Municipality should become cog- government to act ruthlessly. We have collected information regarding the deterioratnisant of what is happening just north of Limpopo, where the problem of unregulated hawkers (called street vendors ing situation over the past couple of months and we quote,
mostly verbatim, from AFP (Agence France-Presse), Zimbabwean newspapers and statements that we have been receiving from our neighbouring country. • GTM, take heed of what happens when a situation is allowed to get out of control! There are just too many situations in Tzaneen getting out of control!
Zim retailers lose out to desperate street vendors Source: AFP/File/Jekesai Nijikizana The cries of street vendors have become the soundtrack to Zimbabwe’s collapsing economy as increasing numbers of the unemployed try to eke out a living, leaving shopkeepers — and the taxman — poorer. Redundant workers, school leavers and college graduates have spawned a new phenomenon of “shop-front stores” in major cities, where they peddle anything from medicines to vegetables, pirated CDs and clothes — often on the doorstep of legitimate shops selling similar items. The director general of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, Gershem Pasi, said the growing number of vendors was eroding the country’s tax base. “I don’t know if the authorities will be able to remove the vendors and what force they will use to remove them,” Matope said. If the government uses force to clear out the vendors, it wouldn’t be the first time. In 2005, riot police were deployed to remove informal traders and demolish backyard buildings... Source: AFP/File / Jekesai Njikizana Zimbabwean street vendors march towards parliament to submit a petition appealing against the eviction of vendors from the streets during a protest on June 24, 2015 in Harare, Zimbabwe. Mugabe, 91, who has been in power since independence from Britain in 1980, was re-
elected in 2013 on the promise of creating two million jobs, but independent economists say unemployment is running at around 80 percent. The UN World Food Programme says 72 percent of the population live below the national poverty line of less than US$1,25 per day. Shop manager Canton Matope bemoans the influx of unlicensed vendors, saying they are taking business away from the formal economy. “They put their wares on our doorsteps and accost customers, telling them that our prices are slightly higher than their prices,” he complained. Shop owners cannot match the prices of vendors as they are burdened by taxes, rent, salaries and licence fees, he said. Cutting the tax base Source: AFP/File / Desmond Kwande The director general of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, Gershem Pasi, said the growing number of vendors was eroding the country’s tax base. “We are receiving complaints from formalised businesses that they are no longer able to do sufficient business to meet their tax obligations,” he said. “Most of the vendors we now have are young people and I am sure most of them would not want to be doing vending if they had an opportunity to go into formal employment,” Pasi said. “We are creating a generation which may never know what formal employment is all
about and that generation is wasted investment.” Last month (June), hundreds of street vendors petitioned parliament after authorities threatened to move them off the streets, by force if necessary. The protestors said they were not vendors by choice and demanded that the government create jobs for them instead. A June 26 deadline for them to take down their stalls passed without action, and so far it has been business as usual for the vendors, who make use of any available space to display their wares and render some pavements almost impassable. The latest from last week in Harare Source: Diana Nherera and Daniel Kachere: The Herald (Zim) Some vendors in Harare were yesterday (Thursday last week) still operating at illegal sites, defying yet another call by the city council for them to move to the newly designated areas. A snap survey carried out by The Herald yesterday showed vendors still selling clothes and shoes along Julius Nyerere Way, Chinhoyi Street, Mbuya Nehanda Street, Market Square as well as at Simon Muzenda Street where they erected tents. In an interview, Harare City principal communications officer Mr Michael Chideme insisted that vendors should stop selling their wares in the central business district. “Vendors are only allowed to trade at the designated sites any day and any time of the year,” he said. Chideme said there is high municipal police presence on the streets to rid the city of vendors selling their wares at undesignated
sites. Yesterday Harare municipal police trucks could be seen loading vendors’ stalls and tables from undesignated sites in the city centre as they continued to ensure that sanity prevails. The police came with truncheons at dawn, catching the vendors as they arrived to set up their stalls in central Harare. Some of them reacted by stoning the police, according to state media. Up to 29 traders were arrested and six seriously injured in the chaos. The traders had been told they were a public health hazard. They’d been ordered to leave the city centre by the end of June. Very few of them complied. “It’s not defiance,” said Promise Mkwananzi, the head of the Zimbabwe Informal Sectors Organisation (Ziso), as the street battles raged. “There is no alternative. The economy has been decimated. Industry is down. There are no jobs.” Tens of thousands of Zimbabweans have invaded the streets of the country’s main towns and cities in the last few months, selling everything from second-hand tights and socks to peanut butter and pumpkins. Some have lost their jobs in a worsening economic squeeze. Others are officially employed but haven’t been paid for months. Many are university graduates. As opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai says, Zimbabwe has become a “nation of vendors”. There have always been street traders in Zimbabwe but this is on a scale never previously seen: men and women crammed tightly — but politely — next to each other, right outside shops that are themselves struggling to remain in business.

Before the start of the mid-year examinations, the senior pupils in the Accounting, Business Studies and Economics class of Merensky High School took part in the school’s annual Entrepreneurs Week. During breaks, fellow pupils queued for pizza slices, samoosas, vetkoek, chips, chicken wings and ice-cream, to mention but a few treats on the menu. This educational venture offers an opportunity for the pupils to develop their entrepreneurial skills. All participants had to formulate and present a business plan, and pay an initial fee to book their stalls. They also had to market their goods before and during the event to earn maximum profit.

Lim doctors return from Cuba At least 21 of Limpopo’s student doctors who have been to Cuba to pursue their medical studies are back home. Last week the students were reportedly honoured with their medical degrees at the University of Cape Town. Department of health spokesperson Macks Lesufi said, “This group of students have returned from Cuba to do their internships with various institutions across the country, as part of their degree requirements. The arrival of these doctors back home will go a long way in easing the burden of a shortage of medical practitioners in the province, and their presence will help the department to
meet its mandate”. Lesufi added that so far, the department has recruited and sent a total of 450 students to Cuba — and one hundred have already completed their medical degrees, thirty are in their final year and others are expected to come back this month for their final clinical training. In the photo on the left are some of the new doctors after their graduation, seen with Dr Sipho Kabane, the HOD of Health. This project is said to be part of a long standing partnership between SA and Cuba to assist each other in the field of medicine. — Arnold Mabunda

Beware of crime trends Partnership Policing must be a daily business to both the Police and members of the community, in the fight against crime and in an effort to reclaim our streets from criminal activities, says Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the spokesperson for the Tzaneen Cluster of the SAPS. He pointed out the following important aspects of such action: • Traditional leaders, in conjunction with all community leaders including municipal councillors should assist the Police in managing compliance by all the liquor outlets — including the loud music which is disturbing peace within their areas. • Unattended/unoccupied houses in villages and townships must be identified and dealt with accordingly, to prevent occupation by criminals. • Valuable items such as laptops, cell phones, bags, etc. must not be left on vehicles’ seats in parking areas of shopping centres and other parking areas.

The Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) initiated a project called #facesoffire where people are encouraged to take photos of people fighting fires. “The aircraft almost always enjoy all the attention during a fire, while the people on the ground do not get recognised. We do not know about the guy getting up in the wee hours of a winter morning, putting on his jacket and safety boots to go out to a fire, or of the farm workers who had been battling for hours on end, with soot all over their faces. We do not see fire fighters exhausted because of the
• The SAPS in this Cluster is still making a special call to all members of the community to share more information (informers’ rewards are paid for information regarding the following): ** Illegal firearms; Drugs or dagga; Stolen goods/cars; Wanted suspects, etc. Anyone having information about these criminal activities may contact the SAPS Tzaneen Cluster Commander — Brig Thomas Shingange — on 082 565 8155 (24 hours/day), and his/her identity will not be revealed. Seen here with the pupils are staff members Mss Sphiwe Ngobeni, Marie van der Westhuijzen and Ouma Kheswa and a teacher from Gravelotte School, Ms Amanda Eloff.

Me Riesl Arrow en haar regterhand, me Renata Louw.

Daar is tans vyftien verskillende perdrydissiplines.
Western Mounted Games
Oppie Kassie On the Telly
Vertoonspring
Nine hockey (boys) players from Stanford Lake College have been selected to represent Limpopo. In the boys u.16A group (LEFT) are Madala Honwana and Matthew Oosthyse in the photo and Mfumo Mongwe, who was absent when the photos were taken. In the u.18B group (MIDDLE) are Benno Prinsloo, Graeme Harty, Jason Wright and Michael van Zyl, who could not attend the photo session. The two u.18A players (RIGHT) who won their provincial colours are Adam McGaffin and Kganya Sebetjane.
Plasie cyclists victorious at Limpopo qualifier On Saturday Merensky High School’s mountain bikers competed in the Levubu Mountain Biking Limpopo qualifier in Levubu. To qualify for Limpopo colours, the athletes must participate in at least six of eleven official qualifiers and finish among the top three participants in all six of these races. Under14 athletes Christelle Coetzer
and Armand Cronjé crossed the finish line first in the girls’ and boys’ races. Michelle Stevens also broke the tape and finished first in the girls u.18 race. Sheldon Muller took part with the u.16 boys and finished fifth. The Levubu challenge is known to be tough with many ascents resulting in a 636 m climb from start to finish. Welgedaan, dames!
DWK Bowls Club strike a double! Well done to Ally & Sue Morrison who are this year’s Limpopo Senior Masters Champions. It is not sure if this is the first time a husband and wife entry have won in the same year, but if so then history has been made. Accolades also to Di de Wet who won three of her five games to attain fourth place in the Senior Ladies Masters Championship.
This year’s Duiwelskloof Bowls Club Annual Wolkberg Tournament was yet another hugely successful event. Once again the tournament was over-subscribed and it attracted a total of 28 teams from various parts of SA. The format of play was mixed fours with a total of seven games of eleven ends each. Special thanks to Mooketsi Transport, Trophy Toyota, ZZ2, Westfalia, Peppadew, Hill Klinkert Boerdery, Louw Swanepoel and Hobby Print.

“Noise proves nothing. Often a hen who has merely laid an egg cackles as if she laid an asteroid.”
