Water Act similar stipulations are also embedded in the National Environmental Management Act, which makes it an offence to contaminate soil and groundwater with oil spillages. Environmentalists and farmers next to the Letaba river are deeply concerned and there is talk of legal action against the GTM. This photo clearly shows (the dark patch) how oil is being spilled (daily) in the area. Read our report on page 3.

A looming oil pollution disaster of the Letaba River could cripple Tzaneen’s economy and ruin export farming in the area. The oil contamination hotspot lies squarely on the threshold of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality and is a gross offence of the National Water Act. The allocated (old) parking area for Tzaneen’s informal mechanics in the town’s free trade zone has grown into an oil spilling centre, leaking its contents into the river. Apart from the

Vlieg
As ’t ware meer as net ‘n tweederangse tweedebladsy een-keer-perweek rubriekskrywertjie!
7. Maak jou drinkery vir jou moeilikheid
by die huis? 8. 11. Kry jy geheueverlies as jy gedrink het? 12. Hoekom? 2. Nie net oor sy drinkery nie! 3. Is jy mal? 4. Nie om op te hou bewe nie! 5. Natuurlik! 6. Baie! 7. Haar moer man! 8. Gewoonlik net voor die kroeg sluit. 9. Hoekom? 10. Veral skool. 11. Hoekom anders drink jy dan? 12. Nou raak jy bedonnerd! Gesondheid!

The Bulletin on Friday showed the new R1m cement wall along the Letaba river in Tzaneen being destroyed. What do you think can be done to prevent this crime or to the thugs responsible for the vandalism?
believe there is anything that can be done to prevent this...
SIES. New book published by local author Nino Burelli Reminiscent of Herman Charles Bosman This collection of short stories titled “A Walk into the Wind”, on hunting and fishing in South Africa, like Nino Burelli’s previous book, “Under A Hunter’s Moon”, chronicle the adventures of Bielie and Foepie. In a style that is reminiscent of Herman Charles Bosman, the characters spend time discussing matters relating to life and the emotions experienced by hunters and fishermen. Well illustrated with superb drawings by world renowned artist Penny Meakin, and also with a large number of period photographs, many depicting local members of the community, this book will no doubt become a treasured piece of Africana. Some of the stories have previously appeared in outdoor magazines in South Africa and in Europe. Because the stories have universal appeal, many have been syndicated to other publications and thus have gained a strong following by readers, worldwide. Nino Burelli, who lives in Tzaneen, is very well known in regional and international agricultural and business circles. He started writing as a hobby and has subsequently received a number of literary awards. “A Walk into the Wind”, is not a training manual, although it does give a number of tips on what not to do. The stories are sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but mostly with a twist
which discloses the close interaction found between hunters, fishermen and their prey. They all emphasize the love and appreciation for the environment and outdoor lifestyle. The principle that a good story can always be improved by a thinly veiled lie has been liberally applied. This is something which should be familiar to most fisherman and hunters. Whether you’re alone or have company, whether or not any animal has been shot or any fish caught that day, sitting next to the fire as the stars are beginning to pop out and the pot is bubbling on the bed of coals, it is time to rehash the events of the day, so..... “After you’ve put another piece of wood on the fire, Bielie,” Foepie said, taking a long swallow of cool beer and wiping his mouth on the back of his hand, “tell me your story.” Copies of the book can be bought at PNA in Tzaneen, the local BVJ Hunter’s Association office or Linda’s Bookshop in Haenertsburg. They can also be obtained from the author at nino@ francolinhill.co.za.

GTM could be taken to court about pollution The Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s decision — taken without consultation with the residents of Tzaneen — to move the outdoor informal mechanics to an earlier parking area in mid-town could be challenged in the court sooner rather than later. The area has become a major dumping site for motor oil and it runs straight into the Letaba River, causing a pollution menace that could jeopardise farming. Eventually it could affect for the Kruger National Park’s wild life. Farmers and environmentalists are deeply concerned. The river is the responsibility of the department of water affairs’ catchment management area (CMA) and quality control division, but their jurisdiction seems to be limited to the river bed and banks. Adjacent land owners and users are compelled by the National Water Act to prevent pollution. In Tzaneen, where a daily oil spill is experienced on the premises of the informal mechanics, the GTM is the custodian and therefore responsible for the mess. Section 24 of the Constitution also stipulates that the custodian shall be held responsible for conserving the environment. Members of the community or environmental organizations are entitled to bring in court orders against authorities who do not adhere to these disciplines against pollution, said Mr Frederick Pohl of Enviro-Assess in Tzaneen. In terms of section 15 of the Water Act anyone who pollute water or neglect to rectify the situation will be guilty of an offence.
Farmers and producers of especially export fruit and vegetables are also concerned about the influx of unwanted material, especially from informal settlements where there are no existing water or sewage systems. The farmers pay substantial monthly fees for water use, source management, research and even meter readers, said Mr Peet Jordaan, a nursery owner of Yamorna. It is paid to the Letaba Water Users’ Association (LWUA) and he expects a proper service from them. Another farmer from Yamorna, Mr Barrie Williams, said the pollution issue of the Letaba river comes a long way. The matter was taken up with authorities by members of AgriLetaba years ago, but conditions have not changed. Mr André Venter of the LWUA said they are consistently in contact with the authorities involved, including Disaster Management of the Mopani District in Tzaneen. He advised farmers to contact their area representatives on the board to lodge complaints. Efforts to get comment from Mr Pieter Vorster, the chairman of AgriLetaba, failed. Farmers who spoke to Bulletin about the looming crisis said they expected from organised agriculture to address the GTM’s lack of respect for a vitally important water source. The informal sector in Tzaneen seems to enjoy special treatment by the GTM and residents feel the situation is out of control, since informal traders “open shop” where and when they like.

Die Boodskap
24 July 2015
Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church
Yes, we are cynical Mopani district’s often loud and boisterous political landscape does not offer the ideal environment for anyone who does not wish to be synical about a better future for this lovely part of the land. The Mopani District Municipality is still in turmoil after the suspension of their municipal manager; the Greater Giyani Municipality experience their own unique problems, especially with water supply; of the Greater Letaba Municipality it can at best be said they are having a rough ride; Phalaborwa is not an example of a municipality where things are running smoothly; regular turmoil in Greater Tzaneen is extremely worrisome and the GTM seriously lacks strong leadership to guide the capital of Limpopo’s lowveld area to a better future. Since the previous municipal elections rate payers of the GTM have seen huge amounts of money being spent on wasteful and fruitless expenditure and Tzaneen town, as the financial and commercial hub of the GTM, has been grossly neglected and its residents’ concerns have been ignored. All of a sudden there seems to be new activity in attending to some of the town’s strangling problems. Communication is perhaps the most important thing in life. In today’s world we have so many ways of communicating with others, yet often we do not use these methods effectively: jokes and trivia are often sent between the parties, but what about the serious side? Our feelings cannot be expressed in a text message. We need to communicate face to face. Here we can really see how the person feels. Talking to someone often leads to more openness. So if we fail in communicating with others here on earth, those we can see, how is our communication with God affected? How do we communicate with God whom we cannot see? We do not need modern technology to communicate with God, Jesus ensured us a “direct line” to God through prayer. No break downs occur and we can call at anytime. He is always listening. The question comes up “How do we know He has heard us, does He really answer our prayers?” We may not always get a direct reply, but God hears
our every prayer and answers them, often not in the way we expect. Suddenly we hear that someone has been healed and sometimes we thank the medical personnel, but who gave them the knowledge to heal? Who gave them the talents that they have? Was it not God? Do we thank Him or do we just say “Thank God” not really meaning it. I have had personal experience of prayers being answered in so many ways, but too have doubts that God hears my prayers. So am I communicating with Him in the “correct” manner? But more importantly do I believe in His power? What is the “correct” way? I believe there is not hard and fast rules, but the need to talk to Him daily and not only at specific times. He, is as I have said always listening. We need only to ask Him and believe He will do what He has promised. Are you communicating with Him? Blessings.

Minister encourages reading for redemption The Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluatuion, Youth Development as well as Administration, Mr Buti Manamela, visited the Modimolle Youth Centre for Excellence to encourage young offenders to develop a culture of reading and learning. Handing over books to the offenders, he encouraged them to read in order to change their lives, develop their minds and connect with worlds that they have never encountered. The objective of Centres is to correct
and improve the lives of individuals who have found themselves on the wrong side of the law. Reading is one if the most vital ways in which this can be achieved, as such, campaigns like the read for redemption have been running in centres of excellence. The books will go to the integrated resource centre at the Modimolle Youth Centre for Excellence, which was established to equip the young inmates with resources for knowledge and learning.

The world was about to become one young man’s oyster, when disaster struck. Graham Paull (now 28) had been selected to play for the Limpopo Blue Bulls in the 2013 Vodacom Rugby Cup, his Haenertsburg rainbow trout grow out business venture was going big and he had fallen in love with a pretty local, Ms Nicky Morgan, a Pilates instructress who had matriculated at Stanford Lake College. Paull says, “My life changed on the 20th January 2013. Suddenly I couldn’t urinate. I thought there was something wrong with my bladder. Then I had pain down the back of my legs. Over the next two weeks my bladder went paralysed and paralysis set in from my feet up towards the waist.” He was diagnosed with a spinal infection called transverse myelitis. He is paralysed, confined to a wheelchair, and doctors cannot give a prognosis. He was moved between MediClinic Tzaneen and Pretoria East Hospital and ultimately to Muelmed in Pretoria for 12 weeks of rehabilitation. ryday things quicker but it still takes more than an hour to do my daily ablutions.” Paull went to Pretoria Boys High and then spent two years at the Sharks Academy in Durban KwaZulu-Natal. He took up a position in forestry in Louis Trichardt and studied aquaculture by correspondence through the University of Stellenbosch. Paull moved to the Haenertsburg area, the home of his maternal grandfather Mr Patrick McGaffin. In his rainbow trout grow out business, he would bring trout in as fingerlings and sell them at 1,1 kg to a Lydenburg company that supplied retail stores nationwide. Mr James Godden from Johannesburg approached Paull, whilst at the physiotherapist, and discussed the possibility of paracanoeing. Paull found a job in Johannesburg, settled in North Riding, and began canoeing at the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club at Emmarentia Dam. Nine months after starting to train at the Dam, Paull competed in the Gauteng Canoe Spring Championships at Roodeplaat Dam. He won the gold medal in the para-canoe event for coming first in the 200 and 500 m para-canoe races. This qualified him to take part in the International Canoe Federation Spring World Cup in Duisburg in Germany earlier this year. The SA team manager, Mr Craig Mustard, said that Paull’s
first race was not his best because of nerves but he was strong in the semi-final. His semifinal sixth place at 57,705 seconds wasn’t enough to see him through to the final but he gained valuable experience. Paull flies to Milan in Italy on 14 August to take part in the para-canoeing championships on 19 August. He will be the first paraplegic to represent SA. He hopes that this will qualify him to take part in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. All these tours are self funded. Canoeing is one of the least funded sports in South Africa. Many have been instrumental in helping Paull. Lannie Motors in Tzaneen paid for his first wheelchair. Particular thanks go to Mr Paul du Toit for his help with services on the car. Paull also appreciates the help that businessman Mr Paul Smit gave him and the Haenertsburg community, in particular Ms Tammy van Emmenis from Stevens Lumber Mills, who helped with fundraising. With his upbeat disposition Paull concluded, “Whatever life throws at you, it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. You have to pick yourself up and keep on going.”

Chevrolet Cruze: Rated way above average GM’s Chevrolet Cruze is rated as one of the top cars in the category “Affordable Small Cars” and “Affordable Compact Cars” by top Motoring magazines in the USA, Europe and also in South Africa. This is what motoring journalists have to say about the good looking new Cruze:
Pros & Cons: Spacious trunk, Cruze Diesel’s strong acceleration and good fuel economy, Balanced ride and handling, Low fuel economy for the class, Refreshed exterior styling on all but base trim. The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze ranks 5 out of 42 Affordable Small Cars. This ranking is
based on the analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Chevrolet Cruze, as well as reliability and safety data. The 2015 Chevrolet Cruze is ranked: # 5 in Affordable Small Cars # 4 in Affordable Compact Cars Reviewers like the pleasant ride and even
the handling, powerful available diesel engine and spacious trunk for the class that the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze delivers. A four-cylinder engine is standard on the 2015 Chevy Cruze, but test drivers say the available turbocharged four-cylinder engine feels more potent and provides acceptable acceleration. The optional four-cylinder diesel engine delivers swift acceleration, they add. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on gas-powered models; a six-speed automatic is optional. The automatic transmission downshifts slowly at times, according to reviewers. With an automatic transmission and base engine, the 2015 Cruze gets slightly low fuel economy for the class, however, the Cruze Diesel’s consumption is great for the class. Test drivers report that the Cruze rides comfortably and has composed handling. Hard plastics line the interior, and while some reviewers describe these as cheap, others say they are pleasantly textured. Automotive writers say the Cruze’s front seats are comfortable. A few say that competitors offer roomier back seats, especially for taller riders, while others find the back seats sufficiently spacious. Critics say the trunk is big for the class. Standard features include a USB port, Bluetooth and OnStar with 4G LTE and a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot. Optional features include a rearview camera, a nine-speaker audio system, navigation, blind spot monitoring etc.
Bulletin Citroen’s C4 Cactus joined the burgeoning compact crossover category in Europe last year. Distinguished by its offbeat looks and novel ‘Airbumps’ on the flanks, the diminutive Frenchie has some interesting design innovations, even though its mechanical layout is conventional and its platform is shared with the likes of the Peugeot 208. Practicality (for its size) and low running costs are among the Cactus’s USP’s. Citroen and quirkiness have traditionally gone hand in hand and the C4 Cactus certainly lives up to its oddball ancestors.Even the name is kooky. The C4 Cactus is an intriguing addition to the C-segment crossover brigade, and it will take on the likes of the Nissan JUKE, Mazda CX-3 and Renault Captur. The Cactus has a compact footprint, measuring
just 4157 mm from bumper to bumper, 1761 mm across the bows and 1480 mm in height. That said, it’s got a 358 litre boot and enough space to seat four adults in reasonable comfort. Although pushing out just 60kW and 118Nm, the 1.2 litre naturally aspirated C4 Cactus feels far livelier than the modest outputs had led people to believe, and part of the reason for this no doubt lies in the car’s waif-like 965 kg kerb weight. The engine is a new-gen powerplant, and compared to the old four-cylinder unit it replaces, Citroen claims it’s 25% lighter and has 30% lower internal friction losses. Driving the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, the 1.2-litre unit has adequate reserves of mid-range torque. It does the job well enough on the blacktop, with tidy handling in normal conditions. The most noteworthy design feature is those ‘Airbumps’ (plastic panels with air capsules) on the Cactus’s flanks. These are meant to absorb dings inflicted by other vehicles in carparks, as well as those that would be caused by doors carelessly flung open in cars parked adjacent to it. It’s a clever feature, but the biggest potential win
for Citroen is that it gives the Cactus a visual identity unlike anything else on the road. Also helping the Cactus stand apart from the horde are the slitty headlights, bulbous nose, floating roof and high shoulder line of the car. It looks rugged and sporty-ish, and this alone may be enough of a hook for some potential buyers.

Africa (Medunsa) — which has been renamed to Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, after a merger with the University of Limpopo. “One of my uncles used to take me along when he visited his friends who worked at the Wits Medical School. That’s when I began to love medicine,” Nghonyama said. “Medicine is all about helping people. I love helping others and that fulfils me.” It was only in 1997, when he enrolled at Medunsa that Nghonyama’s aspirations seemed to reach the horizon. But tough times lay ahead. He passed all his modules in his first year, but failed physiology. “I repeated (physiology) in 1998, and in 2000 I went to the third level,” Nghonyama said. He passed all his modules and was promoted to the fourth level in 2001.

“But then I failed paediatrics and repeated it in 2002.” He passed other modules, but failed paediatrics again and the university decided to academically exclude him. It was recommended that he register for a less intensive medical-related course as part of rehabilitation. He took a break from studying in 2003. While low spirited, but still determined to pursue his medicine career, Nghonyama registered for a one-year nursing diploma at a college in Pretoria in 2004. But his heart was still at Medunsa. After completing his studies at the nursing college, where he was the overall best student, he returned to the University in 2005. He thought he would resume his studies at level four, where he left off. But the university insisted that he first redo other modules, in addition to the paediatrics modules that he had failed. “Because of the rules, I had to repeat all the clinical modules, even those I had passed.” He then passed all the modules and was promoted to level five in 2006. However, Nghonyama failed two modules, including his apparent nemesis — paediatrics. “The following year I repeated paediatrics and obstetrics.” He passed the rest, but not paediatrics. “In 2008, I had to redo paediatrics for the whole year.” But still, he failed it and was academically excluded again for three years. Between 2009 and 2011, Nghonyama was in academic oblivion. “I was in the wilderness,” he said. But he returned in 2012 after the university management agreed that he redo paediatrics for six months. When the results came back in June that year, he had failed. The university gave him a chance to write supplementary exams in November 2012, but still he couldn’t pass. In January 2013, he lodged a query and demanded that his 2012 exam script be re-marked. “The script was re-marked at Wits University and when it returned, I had passed.” He was cleared to do his final year. That same year, in 2014, students rioted on campus. “The students went on strike. They believed they were being treated unfairly in relation to paediatrics,” Nghonyama said. The level five students who had failed paediatrics that year demanded that their scripts be re-marked by other universities. “When the re-marked scripts returned, all the level five students had passed.” He passed last year and is now doing his internship at the Somerset Hospital in Cape Town. • Well done, Dr Nghonyama!

Imprisonment The Ritavi regional court convicted Joseph Mahlani Malatji (35) to six years imprisonment for attempted murder, and he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. Hector Kulani Nkonwana (29) was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for rape and he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Search for boy continues Ritavi SAPS are still searching for the 17-year-old Gift Thabiso Ramoshaba of Mothatharane village (Tickyline) who went missing at Mariveni Section B. He went missing on Thursday 2 July. The police are still appealing to the community to help locate the missing boy, who was last seen wearing a black drimac, maroon trousers and black shoes. Anyone with information regarding the missing boy should contact the nearest police station or Ritavi SAPS on 015 303 8000 or the mother, Ms Joy Mokwape Ramoshaba on 073 355 1032, or Const Malatji Lucky on 082 414 2710.
Modjadjiskloof arrests
The Modjadjiskloof SAPS have arrested nineteen people during the past week for various criminal offences. Four people were arrested for armed robbery, two for possession of explosives, one for assault GBH, two for common robbery, one for housebreaking and theft, one for rape, three for possession of dagga, three for dealing in dagga, and two for selling liquor without a licence.
Escapee gets ten years
Ritavi escapees arrested Two of the five awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the Ritavi police station holding cells in Nkowankowa on Monday evening have been re-arrested. “Stanley Sipho Nkwana and Rufus Mkhawana were re-arrested late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning in the Nkowankowa area,” said provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Ronel Otto. The re-arrest of Nkwana and Mkhawana followed on information received, said Otto. Nkwana was arrested for attempted murder and Rufus Mkhawana for rape, robbery and assault. Whereas Lazarus Moseamedi was initially arrested for murder and attempted murder of police officers and several cases of armed robbery, Kgomotso Mokhabudi was arrested for murder, robbery and vehicle theft, and Dumisani Nukiwe Khosa for rape. According to Otto, the five men escaped after cutting through the mesh wires of the exercise room. Police are still searching for the three remaining escapees: Kgomotso Mokhabudi, Dumisani Nukiwe Khosa and Lazarus Moseamedi. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Lt Genl Fannie Masemola, has launched an urgent and in-depth investigation into the circumstances surrrounding the escape. ”If we find that there was any negligence or operational procedures not being followed by our members, internal departmental steps will be taken without any delay,” he said.
Tzaneen SAPS are serious The Tzaneen police have arrested 67 people for various criminal activities over the past week. One person was arrested for crimen injuria, three for assault GBH, one for violation of a protection order, one for attempted mur-
The fifth and last suspect who was re-arrested last Monday appeared in the Malamulele magistrate’s court on Wednesday, and was sentenced to ten years for escaping from lawful custody. Mhlongo was initially one the five who escaped from the Malamulele magistrate’s court last month. The Limpopo police re-arrested him in his hide out in a secluded area between Letsitele and Nkowankowa last week Monday. His series of crimes committed in Ritavi

der, six for shoplifting, two for theft, one for robbery, two for housebreaking and theft and one for fraud. Four people were also arrested for malicious damage to property, one for possession of an unlicensed firearm, three for possession of dagga, fourteen for illegal gambling, one for urinating in public, seven for counterfeit goods, thirteen for drinking in public, three for drunken driving and two people were arrested for contravening the Road Traffic Act.
Safety at ATMs “Thieves are opportunists. They like to prey on the unsuspecting, so watch the people who are watching you.” The Police are advising people to be more vigilant when doing transactions at an ATM. Don’t be distracted, intimidated or hurried into your transaction. Never let a stranger touch your card. He/she may have already seen your PIN and could be trying to switch your bank card. Be sure that no one is looking over your shoulder when you key in your PIN. This warning comes after a case of theft was registered at the Tzaneen SAPS. The complainant alleges that one criminal was in front and the other was at the back, while he was withdrawing money at the ATM. The one in front removed the victim’s card from the ATM after the one at the back managed to see the PIN. They then ran off to another ATM, to withdraw money.
Pianist Angie is going places... Angie Nel, a Grade 11 pupil from Merensky High School is an accomplished young pianist. She completed her Gr 5 Almsa practical piano examination in Pretoria recently, and scored an admirable 82%. Angie is well known for performing her own compositions. She also submitted one of her pieces via video to gain entry to the SA Championships of the Performing Arts. The judges commented on her skill, and invited her to participate in the competition in October. She is seen here with her music teacher Ms Rina Klawer.
Tongues tied on Langa’s criminal charges Modjadjiskloof police seem to lack critical information on the ongoing criminal charges brought against the DA’s member of the Limpopo legislature, Mr Philip Langa Bodlani. He was reportedly arrested after he had interfered with the questioning by police of the driver of the vehicle he was travelling in.
Vosssie-onnies gee groot tree...
Get up to
The vehicle was stopped for a routine inspection by patrolling police. Shortly after the incident Modjadjiskloof police W/0 Seshoka Kgamedi told the Bulletin that “Bodlani acted rudely towards the police officers and swore at them”. Bodlani was released on R500 bail. On 20 April Langa failed to appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s court. Bodlani has made two appearances in the courts and in both cases the court postponed the cases due to “the state not being prepared or not ready”. —Arnold Mabunda arnold@bulletin.us.com

Keep a look out for:
Hoewel Limpopo se posisie in so ‘n bedeling gewaarborg is, sien Oubal maar swarigheid vorentoe. ‘Tja, soms wonder Oubal of hy besig is om seniel te raak, of net ‘n dagdromer is! “Visualization is daydreaming with a purpose.”
