Tzaneen and surrounding areas are truly blessed with excellent schools; both government and private schools. Often people would say it is not easy to decide when a choice of school has to be made. Inside today’s edition of the Bulletin (which you are holding in your hands) is the most comprehensive presentation ever of local schools. It will undoubtly be a valuable guide for parents and children to stimulate important decision making about which school(s) to choose from for next year. The time has almost run out for people to confirm their choice for 2016. Use this informative publication to guide you towards a sensible decision. Education in SA is under severe stress and you are in the final analysis responsible for securing the best education/school for your child/children. Good luck!

‘n Ouer behoort te weet as sy kind so wanhopig is!

Coming of age for Unicorn...
31 Julie 2015
Local Heroes
Unicorn Preparatory School in Tzaneen is celebrating their coming of age. We join the Lowveld community in extending our warm and sincere congratulations. Unicorn’s contribution to the cultural, sport, social and academic activities of this area can hardly be over stated. Well done!
Die mense hoor
Let wel: Hulle sê nie so nie!

Die halwe waarheid Net so min as wat ‘n vrou half swanger kan wees, kan daar iets soos ‘n halwe waarheid wees. Iets is waar of onwaar.

Moving Women`s Economic Transformation Forward
COKE is... 1. UNIVERSEEL COKE se blikkies, kleure en inhoud is regdeur die wêreld dieselfde. Net so is Christene ook dieselfde. Galasiërs 3:28 Maak nie saak of iemand Jood of Griek, slaaf of vry, man of vrou is nie: in Christus is almal een. 2. 10. VULLISBLIK Op elke blikkie is daar ‘n teken van ‘n mannetjie by ‘n vullisblik.

The greater Tzaneen Municipality had its top political leadership reconfigured, with the Political Management Team (PMT), the Executive Committee and the Municipal Public Accounts Committee going through some changes. The new teams immediately sat down to map a way forward. We saw the need to strengthen the operational capacity of the municipality, which meant that we had to review municipal policies and by-laws as well as to stabilise the administration by filling critical positions especially at a management level. (Why have you waited so long to attend to this, and please tell us how many years has it taken the GTM to attend to the much needed by-laws?) We also had to address issues related overtime and legal fees, revenue collection as well strengthening our council committees including ward committees.
Mmetle, invited the media for a breakfast last week (like four years ago before the previous elections) and seremoniously announced that “we have to improve our communication with our residents, as well as stakeholders including the media and organised business”. We were tempted to say “Madam Mayor,
We also had to improve our oversight role over the administration. We have already started with the process of promulgating our by-laws, we are have just completed the first phase of the consultation and we are moving to the next phase. A cordial relationship between the municipality or government in general with the community also form part of our renewal strategy, we have to improve our communication with our residents, as well as stakeholders including the media and organised business. (So you admit that a healthy and open relationship has been neglected, and now — why all of a sudden now? — you want to improve the relationship) We have selected a few topics that have been in the media that we felt require clarity as well as other important matters
you could have fooled us”! Despite our serious doubts regarding the sincerity of this bold announcement by her (on behalf of the GTM), we publish the main points of her speech unchanged, with our comments on a few points in red. There is so much that is not said, that her speech reminds us of a gap-toothed child.
that need your attention. • Appointment of a Municipal Manager As you are all aware that we have parted ways with Mr Masiye Mankabidi as the Municipal Manager, GTM has therefore advertised the position of MM in national and local newspapers. Short listing and subsequent interviewing of candidates have since been completed. The announcement of the winning candidate will be announced as soon as Council takes a resolution on the matter. Members of the media and all relevant stakeholders will be duly informed of such development. • Continued from p 7 found to have falsified their qualification, the winning candidate will undergo the vetting process. We will then inform the MEC. (Are you in fact saying that in the past the GTM did not “strictly follow the prescripts of the Municipal Systems Act, as well as Salga and national treasury guidelines? Should it not be a matter of always and ipso facto respecting those guidelines and the Act?) You might have also noticed that vacancies were placed in the media inviting suitable candidates to apply but later withdrawn. The withdrawal of the positions was due to Salary disparities dispute between management and labour unions. The process of resolving this salary disparity dispute is ongoing, and we are hoping for a speedy resolution. We are currently filing critical vacant positions to allow the municipality to operate at full strength; less critical positions will be filled after the conclusion of the salary disparity negotiations and discussions. for the BSC to approve the Draft Tender Document. Load shedding Loashedding is nationwide necessity and all municipalities are compelled to implement load shedding when and if Eskom declares load shedding. As the GTM we have divided our area into nine. A copy of the loadshedding schedule, which also depicts these nine areas will be made available to all members of the media. On our facebook page and website. We are updating our clients and residents through sms and facebook, both GTM and the Tzaneen Loadshedding page. (Why are you, your councillors and your officials so reckless and arrogant about saving electricity in the GTM’s head office and other buildings? This newspaper has queried this abuse and published photos of the main building at night time and over weekends, showing that lights are not being switched off. This despite even the country’s president having pleaded for everybody, including government, to cooperate? Is the GTM above the law, so to speak?) Legal fees There was an outcry regarding legal fees that we have incurred in the past few years, as the leadership of the municipality we have taken steps to reduce these fees, we have done this by introducing a fee structure, which lawyers can charge the municipality, we have also appointed a panel of attorneys for a period of three years. These are lawyers which we can select from whenever we require external legal assistance.
(We challenge you to make the list available to the media, as well as the document containing the new fee structure) Projects at Adjudication stage The following projects are at the adjunction stage in the Supply Management Process: Rita to Mariveni Upgrading of Road from Gravel to Tar (12 km). Moruji to Maswi Upgrading of road from Gravel to Tar (11 km) Tickyline to Makhubidung Upgrading of road from Gravel to Tar (3,4 km) Mafarana to Burgersdorp Upgrading of road from Gravel to Tar (8 km) Security Tender The security tender will soon be advertised, we have completed the drafting of specifications. (Can you confirm that all purchases/tenders are dealt with in full compliance with supply chain management processes as well as all relevant legislative requirements? If so, since when, and how is it being monitored?) Resignation of Councillor Donald Hlangwini of Ward 24 There was an outcry with regard to the councillor’s resignation and subsequent declaration of the vacancy in ward 24. It must be stated categorically clear that in the name of continuity and stability we saw the need to engage the councillor, specifically because his reasons for quitting, which includes among others ill health we resolvable. Stanford Lake College is an Independent Boarding School situated in the picturesque mountain area of Magoebaskloof. There are approximately 250 students across the five year groups, which affords the special opportunity for each child to be valued for his or her own sake and where all pupils are encouraged to explore their own talents. Stanford Lake College writes the I.E.B. (Independent Examinations Board) examinations and offers all mainstream secondary schooling opportunities and has a number of top affiliations, including being a member of the Round Square International Organisation, an Allan Gray Orbis Circle of Excellence school and a lead school in TSSA (Thinking Schools South Africa), and a Green Flag status EcoSchool. Stanford Lake College Staff have a deep commitment to developing young people into positive, independent thinkers who understand the important role they have to play, not only in our beautiful country but also as global citizens on our ever shrinking planet. For this reason, Stanford places a big emphasis on teaching students to be independent learners who are self-referant and has pledged to continually strive to be the best it can be in all academic endeavours. With this vision in mind, the College will
be introducing programmes such as the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grade 8’s next year. Teaching staff attend continuous staff train-
ing and development so as to further enhance their skills and to be in a place where the students will always be offered the most up to date content and methodologies in their classes. “To this end, Stanford has established

All pupils participate in the President’s Awards Programme, with the Bronze and Silver awards being a compulsory element in Grades 8 to 10. “Stanford Lake College is currently in the process of building a High Performance Centre which will add significant value, not only in the sports arena, but also in other areas of school life, including the cultural and academic spheres. SLC’s pupils go to nationals... Six pupils from Stanford Lake College took part in the Regional Tritech Science competition last week. All of them came up with their own ideas for their projects and have worked tirelessly on these over the last couple of months. All of the six pupils have made it through to the national round in September: Kiara Davidson (Long Life Batteries), Jasmine Bokgakga (How safe is your microwave oven) and Tanweer Ghood (Homemade thermos) all achieving Silver awards and Yazdaan Tayob (Are Eco homes a sustainable solution to the energy crisis in SA), Helene Werhahn (Reading with Sound) and Lesedi Motumi (Bacteria Breech) achieving Gold awards. As well as this: Lesedi Motumi was noted to have achieved the ‘best overall project’ of the day. Seen in the photo above are the six successful pupils: Jasmine Bokgakga, Tanweer Ghood, Yazdaan Tayob, Helene Werhahn, Lesedi Motumi and Kiara Davidson.
meestersgraad in Pediatriese Disfagie (voedingsprobleme by babas en kinders).

Unicorn Preparatory in Tzaneen celebrated 21 years as an independent school and 43 years as an existing school last Saturday. The celebratory carnival was held on the school’s top field, the Van Reenen Field. Parents, ex-pupils and others somehow tied to the school, plus the 350 children were invited to attend the day of festivities. Hundreds came. There were lots of stalls, food, drink, various inflatable Mr Ian Houston rides and DJ Craig provided the music until 22:00. Headmaster Ian Houston gave the opening address and played a few tunes on his bagpipes. He said, “The school has remained consistent throughout its history in attracting highly moral-based and down to earth children.” Ms Lilian van Reenen was one of the first secretaries at Unicorn. She fondly recalls the sundial that was moved from the Laerskool to Unicorn. It was placed in memory of Ms Leurs, a much loved teacher, who taught Grades One and Two in English Medium at the Laerskool. The following came over to Unicorn from English Medium; Ms Liz and Mr Bill Anderson, Ms Ria de Klerk, Ms Louise Fuller, Ms Merle Wessels and Ms Marie Albertyn. Responsible for the establishment of trees in the garden were Mr Richard Lancefield, Ms Cookie Leon and Ms Annie Downie. The latter remained in charge of the garden for many years. The name Unicorn was adopted on Mr Archie van Reenen’s suggestion and the motto ‘Integrity’ was suggested by his wife. Van Reenen recalls her husband got legendary golfer Gary Player to take part in a Unicorn fundraising Golf Day. The first principal was Mr Nico Nel from PEMPS in Polokwane. Mr Malan acted principal for a few months until the official opening when the school started with 200 children. — Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com

Healthy eating is vital for children to help them reach their optimum potential, both mentally and physically, says Ms Chanté van Niekerk, a keen dietician in Peace Street, Tzaneen. “Brain development and growth depend on nutrition and lay the foundation for learning and behaviour. A healthy, balanced diet can help your child reach his/her full potential for concentration, memory, focus and mental capacity.” She says children also require energy to fuel their rapid growth and development. Therefore it is important to include a variety of health foods as different foods offer different nutrient benefits. Children should be exposed to as many healthy foods as possible by offering them new foods regularly, one at a time and in small amounts. Van Niekerk recommends six habits for healthy eating:
1. Children need to eat three meals and two snacks every day. No meal or snack should be skipped. 2. Limit intake of foods, snacks and drinks that are high in fat and sugar (e.g. chocolates, sweets and chips). It helps reduce risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type two diabetes, obesity and some cancers. The child may also feel better, look better, enjoy life more and live longer. 3. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables daily and choose more fibre rich foods (bran flakes, brown bread etc). Try it raw — often kids prefer raw carrots, cucumber and tomatoes in a salad rather than cooked vegetables. 4. Practice healthy cooking methods (grill or bake instead of fry). 5. Encourage children to drink enough clean water and avoid fizzy drinks. 6. Encourage daily physical activity and exercise and limit the amount of TV watched.

With the preliminary matric examinations just around the corner, learners should use them as an opportunity to assess their preparedness for their final exams, as well as to boost their year mark and chances of landing a place in their chosen higher education course and institution. Education expert Wonga Ntshinga, a Senior Head of Programme at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s leading private higher education institution, says many learners don’t understand the importance and the value of their penultimate school exams. “Often learners view the prelims as an annoying inconvenience on their road to writing their final exams, when in fact these exams are very important for a number of reasons.” Ntshinga says prelims provide the only objective yardstick to determine how well prepared you are for your final exams, and your performance in these exams should be used to inform your strategy in the lead-up to the finals. “Prelims provide a great opportunity to consolidate your study methods and adjust them where they are shown to be inadequate. They also help you to experience the kind of the stress you’ll have to endure during final exams, which means that you can use the opportunity to develop better stress management and coping mechanisms if necessary. “Additionally, you will be able to
gauge how much time you require to master your various subjects, which will help you draw up an accurate and effective study roster in the weeks ahead of your final exams. And if you master your current study materials, you won’t need to devote so much time on them later, freeing you up to dedicate your time to mastering any new work which you will encounter in the weeks and months to come.” Ntshinga says another reason for learners to take the prelim exams very seriously, is because they can influence – positively or negatively – a person’s higher education chances. “Conditional offers from higher education institutions could still be withdrawn if you do not perform well, while in other instances, the prelim marks may be the ones that will secure you the space you desire.” Finally, the preliminary results contribute to learners’ overall year mark. “If you do well in your prelims, you will be able to write your final exams with the peace of mind that comes from being well prepared, and knowing that your overall performance during the past year already puts you in a good position,” Ntshinga says. Ntshinga says learners should stick to the basic best principles of studying effectively: by organising, preparing and planning.
“It is important that you first organise your time, your work and your environment. Have a clear plan for what you will study every day and ensure you have all the materials you require. When preparing, ensure that you have looked at all your subjects and all the work you need to study for that subject. Then, when you are clear on the scope, draw up a study roster. “You should stick to this roster, and ensure that you have also factored in time for a second round of revision, as well as writing past papers. Focus on the big, overall picture, and also on the details. If you are happy and confident that you have given it your all in your preparation, you will be able to enter the exam room calmly and with the energy and focus required to perform at your very best.” As with any examinations, learners should also ensure they maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle, he adds. “Exercise, eat well, get your eight

hours of shut eye every night, and learn to manage your stress. Make time for taking a break with your friends, and don’t get sucked into a pattern of procrastination. “The next few months will be some of the most important in your life, and their impact will leave an enduring impression on your future ability to build the career of your choice. Yes, it is a sacrifice that you need to make. But soon it will be over, and you will forever thank your future self that you did.” • The Independent Institute of Education

Schalk was vir baie jare betrokke by myne en ander ondernemings in Afrika.

Samaritan settles student’s debt An Australian Samaritan from the African Development Bank in Johannesburg, who has asked to remain anonymous, settled the university debt of Mr Sello Molewa from Tzaneen. The journalism undergraduate student of the UniLim who graduated in 2007 never received his degree, due to his outstanding debt of R9 770. UniLim’s spokesman Kgalema Mohuba confirmed Molewa’s ordeal. “Our certification policy states clearly that certificates are issued to graduates whose accounts are fully settled. Students who owe us are allowed to graduate; however, UniLim withhold their certificates pending payment”. Molewa argued that he incurred the debt because of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme’s inability to fully pay his final year fees. The good Samaritan said, “I’ve been working around the world doing development banking for many years. In fact today I was doing an induction for new recruits and one of them asked what is development banking? “Development banking is about alleviating poverty. That’s what we do for a living,” he told Bulletin. — Arnold Mabunda arnold@bulletin.us.com

Community fed up with SAPS The community of Ga-Sekgopo near Modjadjiskloof stopped reporting crimes to the police, and has now formed structures, whilst they are working relentlessly trying to find solutions to help resolve the endless elderly women attacks in the village. The villagers also agreed that they will no longer report incidents to the Police, but rather deal with the perpetrators in their own way. In the early hours of Tuesday 82-year-old Tselana Ramaremo was hacked with a panga in her house. The woman’s son-in-law, Mr James Mabitsela, said: “Yes, it is useless, we didn’t report it; look at all the things that are happening in the village, it is really discouraging. As a family we will see how to deal with this issue, but our mother is at a relative now.” In June, 81-year-old Malekahlo Mokganya was found dead in her house with blood everywhere. Her grandson, Mr Elias Makhanya, believes his grandmother was killed for her old age grant. The money is missing, despite the fact that she got her money only a week earlier. Limpopo has been rocked by incidents of mob justice linked to witch-hunts. In March, an elderly woman was taken into hiding after she was allegedly identified by sangomas and prophets as being responsible for the disappearance of a five-year-old child. She and her grandson were rescued from a mob by police at GaSekgopo. —Glacier Nkwashu glacier@bulletin.us.com

ANCYL leaders in Lim reinstated The ANC Youth League’s national task team (NTT) led by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has defended its decision to reinstate the Limpopo youth leadership, dissolved by order of the North Gauteng High Court. In May, the Court ordered that the newly elected ANCYL provincial executive committee (PEC) be dissolved immediately. This followed allegations that the congress that elected the leaders flouted procedures. However, the National Task Team is appealing the ruling. Mthethwa said, “Whilst we are still challenging it, it shouldn’t be that we are in contempt of the judgement of the court. If things go our way, everything will be fine. We will just confirm. If things don’t go our way, we will have to go back and re-run congress, but in the meantime, we need an interim structure which will take the league to the national congress.”
He said the NTT had decided to appoint the provincial task team (PTT) while the court ruling was being appealed. Mr. Boy Mamabolo from Seshego, says this merely extends the existing factions. “You cannot appoint the same people that we complained about; the same people that rigged a conference in Tzaneen, but you re-appoint them into the PTT; the same people that insulted the leadership of the ANC in the province by calling them names. The court knows that the person we complained about is Shoba who was the chairperson and Cher Selane who was the secretary, but if you reappoint them in different capacities and say the one is a convenor and the other one is a co-ordinator, is also contempt of court, because the court has ruled that they step aside.” Selane, the newly appointed co-ordinator of the province, has rejected Mamabolo’s claims. He says the task team will work within the param-
eters of the ANCYL’s constitution to prepare the provincial structure for the national conference. “The mandate of the PTT is clear: to ensure that all branches of the ANC in Limpopo are taken to congress and we contest any political programmes.” Mthethwa has also defended their decision. Despite the Limpopo set back, Mthethwa said the youth league had reasserted its support for ANC PEC member Joe Mathebula as provincial treasurer. The Limpopo ANC is expected to hold a general council meeting to fill the position of treasurer left vacant following the death of Mr Thembi Nwedamutswu. Mathebula is set to square off with PEC member Danny Msiza for the position. Msiza’s bid is supported by the ANCYL faction led by Donald Selamolela, who lost the race for the youth league chairmanship earlier this year.

Hy is as die beste o.14-skut aangewys.

Matthew Wilkinson (Gr 9) from Stanford Lake College had the experience of a lifetime at the SA National MTB Champs held in Stellenbosch. The course was very demanding and extremely technical and Matt mixed it with the best riders in the country. He finished a very respectable 32nd in Youth Men. Being able to participate and taste the atmosphere will stay with him for a while.
Beste Kameraad Fikile, Dis alweer ek, Oubal.
A brave number of Plasie mountain bikers dared to undertake the “Tour de Gat” in Phalaborwa on Saturday. The schools league was organized in different age categories, on a tough XCO course. Top honours went to Christelle Coetzer, who took first place in die sub junior category. In the boys’ sub junior category, Armand Cronje ended in third place. Michelle Stevens took third place in die girls’ junior category. In the photo are in front: Amelia Middelton, Armand Cronjé and Michelle Stevens and behind them are Christelle Coetzer, Carmen Nagel and Jenna Devenish. At the back are Chelsey Schlebusch, Natasha Janse van Rensburg, Sheldon Muller, Pierre Cronjé (coach), Robert Retief, Bernice Cronjé and Janco Coetzee.

“A man’s manners are a mirror in which he shows his portrait.”
