Don’t miss tomorrow’s Face of Tzaneng Mall 2015 Today is the last day to enter for tomorrow’s Face of Tzaneng Mall 2015 competition and an exciting parade of beauties.
The competition is presented by Tzaneng Mall and Tzaneen’s Katryn Barwise, the current Miss Humanity International. She also
runs a successful modelling school in Polokwane and she is favoured to be a finalist in the next Miss South Africa competition.
• Crisis at Letaba Hospital needs urgent intervention
Registration is at 09:30 and the parade starts at 11:00 tomorrow in the Tzaneng Mall. Don’t miss it — be there!
UNFORGIVABLE Health Minister Motsoaledi steps in A patient did in fact die as a result of the Letaba Hospital’s generator running out of diesel during a power outage in June. This was confirmed by National Health Minister dr Aaron Motsoaledi on Tuesday. Limpopo’s MEC for Health, Ms Phophi Ramathuba, vehemently denied this and her spokesperson at one stage even said that post-mortem results will show that the death (also of another patient) couldn’t have been as a result of a power outage. Bulletin reported in detail on the incident on 18 June and we then said that “senior doctors at the hospital warned that a cover up is suspected”. “Things here are in a mess,” a doctor was quoted telling us. Towards the end of 2014 members of the National Council of Provinces visited the hospital and stated that they were not happy with what they found and saw there.

Dr Motsoaledi also confirmed some other disturbing facts about the situation at Letaba. He has (at least) taken strong action and suspended the hospital manager, Mr P T Matodzi. Some of the findings that the Health Minister confirmed were: • Matodzi went home on the night when the power outage occurred. “A hospital manager may not do so,” Motsoaledi stated in a press conference. • The hospital’s financial manager used his own money to buy diesel for the emergency generator. Matodzi was warned a number of times to buy diesel for the generator, but he failed to do so. • The number of vacancies at Letaba is unacceptable and immediate action must be taken to fill the vacancies. A number of other questions have remained unanswered since 18 June’s tragic incident. A senior Police officer con-

firmed then that an inquest had been requested and promised to “look into the matter and report back” to us. This, however, never happened. We asked the Minister’s spokesperson on Wednesday for a copy of his announcement about the situation at the hospital, but he said it couldn’t be done and put the phone down without saying good-bye! • Bulletin will continue to follow up on the situation at Letaba Hospital.

direct these poor drivers are shocking! The odd few are not enough. As the R71 is now a national Rd. ...the really need to be INUNDATING the way with signage. Our yuppie crowd in their gti’s are more of a threat. .. they have no regard for speed, solid lines ...blind corners etc etc.... signage needs to display...tractors...heavy duty timber trucks etc etc

Last Thursday a Facebook user posted this image on the Bulletin’s Facebook group and wrote: “Heavy vehicles continue to use the Magoebaskloof Pass. It is illegal and trucks are supposed to use the Mooketsi road where there is a weigh bridge. This out-of-town truck was on the Kloof at 15:00 on Thursday last week. These truckers are a danger to themselves and fellow motorists. Report trucks that disobey the law.” Bulletin then asked: Do you think enough is done to keep heavy vehicles from using these routes?
in hul plastiekskuilings.

Dis steeds baie droog...
Die Boodskap
25 September 2015 Dr Jan Truter Ned Herv Kerk Letsitele
Give us hope
Give me hope Joanna, sings Eddy Grant (and many others after him), and the melody is almost irresistable — it invites one to dance and be joyful. It would not be a bad idea to accept this song as our national anthem, since we desperately need hope for the future. Two weeks ago we reported on the shocking state of toilets at a school just outside Tzaneen; and of a senior education official’s arrogant attitude when the situation was reported to her. Give us hope! Last week we reported on the GTM’s radio station’s financial mess and the senior officials denying that they had any knowledge of the sad state of affairs. Give us hope! Today we report on the Minister of Health admitting that a patient died at Letaba Hospital as a result of the emergency generator that had run out of diesel. Give us hope!

Dodelike hebsug Yvonne du Toit van Tzaneen skryf: The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indiffeŕent to them: that is the essence of inhumanity. — G B Shaw. “Only when the last tree is cut down, and the last river poisoned and the last fish caught, will we realise we cannot eat money.”

Traffic jams, queue jumpers and people who think rules don’t apply to them have emerged among the list of thirty things that gets South Africans’ blood boiling, according to a just-released health survey. More than 1 300 South Africans were polled by the country’s leading heart and stroke treatment provider, Pharma Dynamics, to divulge the things that most get their goat, with taxi drivers topping the list. People cutting in line, folk who ignore the rules, forgetting to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and load-shedding complete SA’s top five rage-inducing annoyances. Commuting in SA evidently also shoots our blood pressure through the roof, especially when motorists and/or cyclists jump red traffic lights, when busses or trains don’t stick to schedules and get cancelled at the last minute, drivers ignoring zebra crossings or when Cocky Joes rip through suburbia or housing estates at supersonic speeds. Other temper-triggers highlighted in Pharma Dynamics’ poll include anti-social behaviour such as when someone pays more attention to their electronic device(s) than to you, along with having to go through endless automated phone options and then being kept on hold. Money also leaves us fuming with high petrol prices, having to pay a fee for withdrawing money from an ATM, paying for parking when you only intend to pop in to the shops

Mariska van Aswegen, spokesperson of Pharma Dynamic said they commissioned the poll as a way to get South Africans to take their heart-health more seriously. “With 6,3 million South Africans living with high blood pressure, SA has one of the highest rates of hypertension in the world. Many however remain unaware of their condition because high blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Hypertension is also a precursor and leading cause behind other life-threatening conditions such as stroke and heart disease. “Stressful situations can cause your blood pressure to spike temporarily, but too much stress could lead to high blood pressure in the long-run. Doing activities that can help you manage your stress and improve your health can make a long-term difference in lowering blood pressure,” she says.

According to the survey, almost a third of South Africans are easily provoked with partners, call centre agents and fellow motorists most likely to be on the receiving end of their anger. Twenty percent of respondents experience daily stress and aggravation from everyday irritations and frustrations, and almost 40% admitted that these usually cause them stress long after the incident. Van Aswegen says if you’re tired, stressed or simply at the end of your tether, it doesn’t take much to make your blood boil. “Try to take short breaks during times of the day that tend to be very stressful, identify what specifically makes you angry and think of possible solutions, humour can also help to diffuse tension, practice relaxation skills especially when your temper flares and exercise too is a great way to help reduce stress and feelings of frustration. “Statistics show that about 130 heart attacks and 240 strokes occur daily in SA, which means that ten people will suffer a stroke and five will have a heart attack every hour. We would like to call on all South Africans to have their blood pressure tested at least annually,” she says.

Forty day countdown…
Merensky High School’s staff and Gr 8 pupils surprised the matric class of 2015 with a delicious treat for their 40 days countdown. Kesia Pohl delivered a short address, thanking the matrics on behalf of the Gr 8’s for their compassion and care, and the example they set to the new Plasies. Doran Kleynhans said a prayer motivating the Gr 12’s to stay true to themselves, even in the big unknown world after school, because each one is special and has a specific calling. The headmaster, Mr Magnus Steyn, encouraged the pupils to make the best of their last forty days at Merensky and thanked them for their contribution thus far. The matrics then walked past a guard of honour formed bythe Gr 8’s, to be spoiled at the school’s restaurant with authentic American food, Yankees and soda — also celebrating the famous Elvis hit “Forty Days”. Lize-Mari Jansen, Naledi Mailula, Dimple Kala and Andrea Devenish in front, and Chris Poutney, Asad Patel, Nicolo Recht, Thapiwa Gwanzwa and Kayla Crous were some of the matrics who enjoyed the forty days celebration.
Middel: Jaco Venter, Marco Strydom, Theo van der Merwe (kaptein), William Coleman, me.
Cancervive besoek Vossies
Janco Blignaut, a Gr 8 pupil from Merensky High School, recently achieved 90% in his Unisa Gr 5 piano examination.
People Living with Cancer, oorhandig.

All in all Plasie Einsteins won fourteen gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals, meaning every entry claimed a prize. The following Plasies won gold: Ivan Botha, Alicia Prinsloo, Chris Bill, Michaela Viljoen, Elzette van Dyk, Marlu McLean, Ulrich Koster, Juan-Jacques Moller, Kesia Pohl, Jenna Devenish, Tahiyya Moosa, Michelle Stevens, Carmen Nagel, Anri McLean, Valeriia Avdysh, Precious Nkuna and Ezri Hugo. It was not all serious hard work, as the participants enjoyed a “wi-Sci” activity at Faerie Glen. Regardless of the cold and rainy conditions, they had to protect themselves against the elements and wild animals with potato guns, “ketties”, bow and arrows and knives. Ramodike heads a new project Well-known retired principal of the Marumofase Full Service School in Lenyenye for the past 27 years (and 37 years as a teacher) now heads the Mmathakana Family Gardening Project together with his elder brother Andries Ramodike. They call it “Phela o lema” meaning Live and Plough. The Mmathakana project is run in the heart of Thabina in Moime village, five kilometres from Lenyenye and where Ramodike was born. The project aims to prevent malnutrition and other diseases through selling fresh vegetables to the people of Moime as well as neighbouring citizens, to encourage the younger generation
to produce fresh vegetables from their homes and to develop business skills of young people in the village through selling their own fresh produce. Because of the water crisis in the area, the garden relies heavily on the new borehole which was drilled last month. The Garden comprises of many different kinds of veggies, including tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, onion and beetroot. However, they also plan to plant green peppers, carrots and green beans. Mmathakana is the first gardening project in the village. “We want residents of Moime to look at the garden as a resource,” Ramodike said. The
garden would be a great way for the community to learn about the importance of nutritious foods and service in their community, he said. — Phidelia Rikhotso

Cheerio Gardens will be magnificent this weekend The bad news at the beginning of the Magoebaskloof Spring Fair was that the constant drizzle meant that few people headed down the dirt road outside Haenertsburg to visit the famous Cheerio Gardens. The good news is that the blossoms had not yet reached their magnificent blaze of colours but, weather perABOVE: Ms Xyza Stander from Haenertsburg is seen here at the dam with the azaleas poised for full bloom. Elderly man shows his entrepreneurial skills
Being able to feed his family from what he earns from using a bicycle to sell vegetables ranging from tomatoes, onions, spinach, cabbage, carrots, beetroot and green peppers is very important to Esack Sekgobela (63), who resides at Khopo in Thabina village. The father of five and two grandchildren battled to find a job until he had an idea of selling veggies. “After I realised that I was not going to find a job, I then decided to buy veggies and use my bicycle to sell them, I knew if I did I would be able to earn some money instead
of just walking the streets doing nothing,” he explained. Sekgobela said his business had been going for 10 years and he was happy about how much it had grown. “Customers always appreciate to see me passing by, since I save them time to go to town or plaza to buy veggies and I am grateful to them for being loyal to me since I started selling. With the income I generate, I am able to buy groceries for my family and we don’t go to bed hungry,” Sekgobela said. — Phidelia Rikhotso phidelia@bulletin.us.com

Assisted suicide
Are there implications for life cover? The assisted suicide debate was elevated in the news earlier this year when Robin Stransham-Ford — a terminally ill cancer patient — won a ruling in the Pretoria High Court, granting him permission to take his own life with the aid of a doctor. The ruling stated that the doctor who would assist Stransham-Ford would not be criminally charged for the act. Ironically, Stransham-Ford passed away hours before the ruling. While this ground-breaking case raises many ethical and legal questions, one less-talked about potential implication is that of life cover: • Will legal cases of assisted suicide differ to the current life cover clauses on “regular” suicide? • Will life cover policies have to change in the future to take cases of legal assisted suicide into account? Sandy Govender, Head of Group Insurance at Momentum, agreed to shed some light on this issue.
Current life cover clauses regarding “regular” suicide “In the insurance world under group arrangements there is something called free cover limit (FCL),” explains Govender. “Individuals in the group automatically qualify for cover up to the FCL. Where cover is compulsory, for example in group life cover through an employer, there are no exclusions on suicide up to the FCL. For individuals taking out cover above the FCL, suicide will only be covered up to the FCL until the full underwriting is approved for the higher amount, after which it will be fully covered.” Esack Sebola in the streets of Lenyenye heading to Motjeteng selling veggies.
Haenertsburg Village Hall. There’s plenty to eat and drink at the countless eateries and live music too. The wedding expo held at Cheerio Gardens this past weekend showcased who and what Cheerio Gardens offers for special occasions. — Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com
Govender further explains that for individual policies where clients take out the policy on a voluntary basis, their suicide is not covered for an initial period from the commencement of the cover, ranging from 12 to 24 months, from the inception of the policy. Otherwise the full amount is paid. “Suicide is only a risk to insurers if their client took out the policy knowing that once they committed suicide their beneficiaries would be covered. This is actually a rarity and the exclusion period would reduce any potential risk here.”
Assisted suicide vs “regular” suicide According to Govender, in terms of life cover, assisted suicide is no different to the current life cover clauses on suicide. “In most instances of medically assisted suicide the client is terminally ill and will usually not have much longer to live. In this regard, they would in any case become a claim on our books in the near future. So assisted suicide is actually a lower risk than a healthy person committing suicide. Most life insurance policies have the option to take out a terminally ill cover which allows for your life insurance benefit to be paid while the client is alive if the doctors says that the person has less than a certain period to live (typically 12 months). So this further reinforces why assisted suicide is not really an issue.” “As we don’t see assisted suicide as a high risk, it is unlikely that life policies will change in the near future in this regard.”

Little headway after attacks: Tzaneen and the surrounding areas were hit by a wave of farm attacks and other
serious criminal incidents during September and thus far, little headway has been made by police to apprehend the suspects. A suspect in the murder of Mr Irshad Chauhan (24) who was fatally wounded in his home in Ellenboog flats, appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court. He has been identified as Zimbabwean national Kennias Chimbwanda (25) and he faces charges of murder and house robbery. He is on remand for a formal bail application and further investigation. In the case of Mr John Taylor and his wife Ingrid who were attacked and robbed by two armed assailants on their farm in George’s Valley on 7 September, no suspects have yet been arrested and investigations continue. At the time of going to print there was still no further developments in the case in which Mr Cobie Kemp shot an intruder at his home at Constantia in the Letsitele area. Last week we reported on the armed robbery at Lenyenye Cash and Carry in Tzaneen, when three gunmen entered the store and made off with an estimated R70 000. No arrest has been made and the investigation continues. In the latest attack, a restaurant owner was attacked and robbed by an armed assailant. The victim, Mr Leonard Monyela (28), is the owner of a Chesa Nyama restaurant at Maake Plaza, Lenyenye. The amount stolen is said to have been R6 000. Nobody was wounded in the incident. At the time of going to print no arrests have been made and police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

Unicorn ends on a high Unicorn Preparatory School in Tzaneen has ended the cricket season’s fixtures on a high, with both the first team and the u.11’s going through to next term’s knock-out rounds. The first team defeated the following schools in their march through the cricket
season: Drakensig, Rooiskool, Burgersfort and Bombeleni; with a loss to Groenskool. The u.11 team, meanwhile, are undefeated in all their league matches so far and will go into next term’s fixtures at the top of the log, having beaten Groenskool, Drakensig, Rooiskool, Burgersfort and Bombeleni.
Hockey prizegiving Unicorn’s first cricket team: In front are Dinho Mashele, Luca Wasley, Ethan Jones, Kyle Bain (captain), Nicholas Adendorff and Byron Andrew. Back: Andreas Hacker, Donovan Rodrigues, Daniel Scholtemeyer, Stefan Hacker, Benjamin Freitas and Christen Taylor.
Megan-Mae van der Nest, Ms Wendy Dreyer (coach) and Jenelle de Jonge.
All the hockey teams from Merensky High School attended the annual prizegiving, aptly themed “hard core hockey”. Teams went all out, and war paint underlined their passion for their favourite sport. An exciting presentation about the future of Merensky hockey added the cherry on top. Every player received a certificate of participation and special awards were made to the best player and most committed player of each team. Parents, coaches and players enjoyed a braai afterwards. Merensky hockey would like to thank their numerous sponsors for generous donations.
These two young cricketers from Unicorn, Nicholas Adendorff and Dinho Mashele, did their school proud by being selected for the Limpopo cricket team.

Townies rule at gala
Tora! Tora! Tora! As tradition dictates, the annual inter-house gala at Merensky High School took the form of a heated challenge between hostel learners and those who live in town or the surrounding areas. The staff astonished one and all when they claimed the spirit trophy, showing that age is only a number. The hostel girls won with 209 points to the towns’ 153. The town boys put a score of 263 on the board, with the hostel boys scoring 155. The final score was Hostel 364 and Town 416. Junior victor ludorum went to Jaco Jacques Joubert, and the junior victrix ludorum to Megan-Mae van der Nest. Senior victor ludorum was Ivan Botha and the senior victrix ludorum Leandie Toerien. Seen in full action is Ivan, and Leandi is seen after another successful final.
Sterretjie vonkel…
Dis nou maar eenmaal so dat daar min dinge so gevaarlik is as ‘n vernederde Bokspan! “Always mistify, mislead and surprise the enemy if possible.”
