GTM & Tzaneen: Quo vadis? Greater Tzaneen Municipality, quo vadis? Where are you going (with the residents of your jurisdiction)? Do you really believe that the ratepayers and even the non-ratepayers will acept your inept management ad infinitum? The latest shocking news that the GTM have been formally and officially warned by the national Department of Cooprative Governance and Traditional Affairs that the muni could face massive claims from ratepayers for illegally charging property rates, is yet another confirmation of the GTM’s failure to run a proper administration. A month ago Pres Jacob Zuma launched the War on Leaks programme, which is designed to train young people to curb water losses that are costing the country about R7 billion a year. The government, through the Department of Water and Sanitation, would train fifteen thousand (15 000) artisans or plumbers who will fix leaking taps in their communities.

Let wel: Hulle sê nie so nie! • Die ellende staan groen in die blom, hoor die mense, en dit kom op ’n slegte tyd nadat die versekering hul rug op die probleem gekeer het. Die studente-krisis Geen verantwoordelike Suid-Afrikaner wat ons land se toekoms op die hart dra, kan na dié week se gebeure op kampusse lekker of net gemaklik voel nie. Die regerende party het twintig jaar gelede begin om die maan en die son en die sterre te belowe. Hulle is gereeld gewaarsku dat dit hulle een of ander tyd gaan byt, want die beloftes vereis geld en geld groei nie aan bome nie. Van die eerste keer toe beloftes nie nagekom is of nagekom kon word nie — wat nie baie korter as twintig jaar gelede is nie! — is die apartheidspook van die rak gehaal, afgestof en as die oorsaak van alles wat verkeerds/was aangebied. Die spook is al hoe meer misbruik en mettertyd was dit nie eens meer nodig om dit af te stof nie, want daar was nie tyd vir die stof om te vergaar nie. Nou’s die vet in die vuur... en die spook-storie werk nie meer nie. Daar is interessante dinge wat ons die week opgeval het. Een hiervan was die duur slimfone, die ontwerpersdrag, die duur gemakskoene, die gemanikuurde naels, die sonbrille... Nie sleg nie vir studente wat bitter swaar kry..!

Bernard Nel, Harry Dilleystraat, Tzaneen, skryf: Wie onthou nog Eerwaarde Allan Hendrickse van die destydse Arbeidersparty se kaal boep op een van die “Whites only” strande in Port Elizabeth? Sy doel was om ‘n morele standpunt te maak teen immorele apartheidswetgewing, wat menseregte misken het. Die oorsprong van hierdie wetgewing was natuurlik die netwerk van dinkskrums wat opgemaak is uit die Afrikaner Broederbond en die drie Susterskerke. Slegs wit fasiliteite is nou geskiedenis en die geslag wat daaronder moes ly is nou die nuwe outoriteit. Die selfaangestelde sedebewakers van die volk het egter ook besluit dat homoseksuele nie die morele toets slaag nie en dus nie soos normale mense met die meer aanvaarbare morele waardes behandel moet word nie. Dit bring my dan by die Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk se onlangse sinode-besluit dat homoseksuele vrygestel word van die besluite van die verlede, wat hulle nie moreel aanvaarbaar gemaak het as leiers in die kerk of as vennote in ‘n huwelik van dieselfde geslag nie. Plaaslik het ons die Dinamus Gemeenskapskerk onder leiding van ds Johan Fourie, visioenêre leier, senior pastoor en oudNederduits Gereformeerde Kerk dominee. In wat blyk ‘n opportunistiese poging te wees het hy soos enige goeie verkoopsman ‘n verklaring namens sy kerk uitgereik, wat daarop wys dat sy kerk nie van die morele wet van God gaan afstand doen om homoseksuele gelyke status soos deur die heteroseksuele geniet word, te gee nie. Die eenman-sinode het gepraat en die skape moet luister! Ek haal verbatim aan uit die verklaring: “In die lig van wat die hele Bybel wil ons gemeente ons amptelike standpunt stel oor ‘n aantal vrae” Die aanhaling is nie vir my duidelik nie maar ek neem aan dat Fourie probeer sê dat die Bybel in sy geheel die standpunt van sy kerk bevestig. Enige iemand kan ‘n fout maak en dit is nie my intensie om punte te behaal met ‘n steelhou nie. Ek wil Fourie komplimenteer vir die moed

John Maxwell skryf in een van sy boeke van ‘n baie besondere man. Sy naam is Roger Crawford. Hy is in sy veertigerjare en maak ‘n bestaan as konsultant en openbare spreker. Hy het al twee boeke geskryf en reis sy land vol om mense toe te spreek. As dit u nie beïndruk het nie, lees bietjie verder. Voordat hy ‘n konsultant geword het, het hy vir sy universiteit tennis gespeel en het later ‘n professionele tennisspeler geword. Nog nie beïndruk nie? Sal u, u opinie verander, as ek u vertel, dat Roger Crawford net een voet en nie hande het nie? Hy is gebore met ‘n liggaamlike kondisie wat ektodaktilisme genoem word. Hy is gebore met iets wat soos ‘n duim gelyk het, aan sy regtervoorarm en net ‘n duim en ‘n vinger aan sy linkervoorarm. Hy het geen handpalms gehad nie. Sy arms en bene was korter as die normale en aan die einde van sy linkerbeen, was ‘n ineengekrimpte voetjie met slegs drie tone. Die voet is afgesit toe hy vyf jaar oud was. Roger het per geleentheid gesê dat hy baie mense in sy lewe ontmoet het wat ﬁsies, geestelik, omgewing of verstandelik gestrem was. Die een ding wat hom dikwels van dié mense opgeval het, was dat hulle hulself bejam-

Moet ek hulle verslaan? Ek wil graag my dogter in slawerny verkoop soos gemeld in Ex 21: 7. Wat dink jy sou ‘n billike prys vir haar wees? Lev 25: 44 keur goed dat ek inderdaad slawe mag besit van buurlande. Volgens ‘n vriend van my in Amerika geld dit daar egter net vir Mexikane en nie Kanadese nie. Hoekom kan hy nie ‘n Kanadees as slaaf besit nie? Ek het ‘n buurman wat daarop aandring om op die Sabbat te werk. Volgens Ex 35: 2 moet hy gedood word. Is ek moreel verplig om hom persoonlik dood te maak? ‘n Vriend van my voel dat alhoewel die eet van garnale en kreef ‘n gruwel in die oog van God is, dit ‘n mindere gruwel is as om homoseksualiteit te beoefen. Ek stem nie saam nie. Kan jy dit uitklaar? Lev 21: 20 meld dat ek nie die altaar van God mag nader as ek ‘n sig-gebrek het nie. Ek gebruik ‘n leesbril. Moet my sig 30/30 wees, of is daar beweegruimte hier? Die meeste van my vriende sny die hare aan die kant van hulle hoofde ten spyte van die feit dat dit uitdruklik verbied word in

mer en gedink het die wêreld s k u l d hulle iets. Roger sê egter die probleem is net dat die wêreld nie so dink nie. Habakuk sê: “Die Here gee my krag om op hoë plekke te loop.” Habakuk is oorspronklik in Hebreeus geskryf, wat dit nog mooier stel: “Die Here gee my krag om op my hoë plekke te loop!” God wil vir jou die krag gee om die grense wat jy stel, te bereik. God gee vir jou krag en talente, wat jy daarmee maak is jou saak. Jy bepaal jou eie grense. Dit is so maklik om te sê: “Ja, maar my agtergrond; my ouers; ek het arm grootgeword of my velkleur is verkeerd!” Dan is dit logies dat jy nêrens sal kom nie, want jy plaas grense op jou lewe, nog voordat jy begin het. Kyk na Roger Crawford. Hy het niks gehad nie, maar tog het hy bo uitgekom. LP Sacks het gesê: “Die pessimis sien die probleem in elke geleentheid; die optimis sien die geleentheid in elke probleem!”

Die wat die toets nie slaag nie, moet ‘n afkoopboete betaal wat aan die boufonds geskenk sal word. Die speelveld is nie gelyk vir die homoseksuele nie. Hulle doen niks in die duister nie. Die wat ek ken is eerlike en liefdevolle mense en nie huigelaars nie. Die enigste ondubbelsinnige maatstaf is om aan ander te doen wat jy aan jouself gedoen wil hê. Dit bly die enigste morele kompas. My simpatie ook met die homoseksuele wat vasgevang is in die kultus van die Jehova Getuies. Hulle sagte handjies is goed genoeg om die franchise se graﬃti Saterdagoggende te versprei, maar as dit kom by kerkdienste bywoon dan sit hulle agter in die “Condone Hall”. Hul straf is om vermy te word totdat die oudstes besluit die individu het hom bekeer van sy kwade dade. Onder die oudstes tel selfs ook prokureurs wat eintlik van beter behoort te weet, maar ‘n graad aan ‘n universiteit was nog nooit ‘n paspoort vir toegang tot die intelligentia nie. Nog minder ‘n maatstaf om huigelary in die kerkgalery te voorkom. Intussen wroeg ek met al die vrae en hoop ek ds Fourie sal my spoedig help met sinvolle en gesaghebbende antwoorde. Dit is bekend dat hy ‘n voorkeurkoerant het, wat natuurlik sy goeie reg is. Dus kan hy gerus maar sy voorkeurkoerant gebruik. Ek sal darem seker weer êrens by iemand hoor as daar iets van hom daarin verskyn het.

One man exhibition held in Tzaneen Well known artist Ina van Schalkwyk (70) from Georges’ Valley held her one-person exhibition at a Tzaneen private home last week. Mainly oils, she showcased her immense talent with a variety of subject material. She is known for her romantic barefooted figures dressed in whimsical clothes. However, she first shot into the public eye many decades ago with her wildlife oils. This exhibition of 25 delightful oils and one pastel showed her versatility. The

themes ranged from wildlife to domestic animals, birds, landscapes, people, flowers and still life. The prices ranged from R5 000 for what van Schalkwyk terms “my babies” to R35 000 for the large works. All but one depicted beautiful aspects of life and the world. The poignant and haunting oil was of an unshaven skinny man seated on his bed in his sparsely furnished apartment. The window is devoid of curtains or blinds. On the wall above his bed is

an old photograph of a happy couple. Perhaps it’s of himself and his wife in younger times. On the other wall is a crucifix and on the table is a half a bottle of alcohol. Plasies rewarded at Eisteddfod event The annual Tzaneen Eisteddfod Rewards event was held at Merensky High School last week. Merensky High School pupils proved why their school was named as the top cultural school in the country. Most of the high school awards went to Merensky performers. In the section for English grade winners, Kesia Pohl received the Gr 8, Heinrich van Zyl the Gr 9, Valeriia Avdysh the Gr 10, Laryn Prins the Gr 11 and Mynhardt Bouwer the Gr 12 certificates for top honours. In the Afrikaans section the grade winners were: Ruette Schoeman (Gr 8), Chris Bill (Gr 10), Bernice Cronje (Gr 11) and Mynhardt Bouwer (Gr 12). In the vocal section Bernice Cronjé was the Gr 11 winner and Yvonne

Fleischmann the Gr 12 winner. The best piano award was given to Britney Chu (Gr 10). Specific item medals were awarded to Yvonne Fleischmann, Janke Jansen van Vuuren, Micaela Ball, Mynhardt Bouwer, Michaela Viljoen, Laryn Prins, Valeriia Avdysh, Lize Crafford, Elzette van Dyk, Britney Chu, Chris Bill, Heinrich van Zyl, Ruette Schoeman and Kesia Pohl. Merensky’s Gr 9 drama group also received a trophy for the best English dramatised item. The Gr 11 drama group delivered the best one act play. Perfectly pink mother and daughter event On a cold and rainy Saturday (17 October), Merensky High School celebrated their annual Mother and Daughter event. The organisers went all out, carrying the colour scheme of white and pink through from the walkway to the hall, which was very stylishly done. The keynote speaker, Ms Nicolette Steel, was a big hit. She captured young and old with insight on how moms and kids handle life with all its ups and downs.

Police station closed, but... Relela Police Station, outside Tzaneen is currently locked down following threats and a series of break-ins. It is alleged that on Saturday 10 October, after thugs allegedly set alight a spaza shop in the village’s centre, angry residents marched to the Police station after the police had failed to respond. They never visited the scene where the shop had been set alight. It is alleged the residents were going to the Relela police station to report the incident at about 02: 00. However, the officers on duty ran away since they allegedly thought they were being attacked. Limpopo Police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, confirmed that the station has been temporarily closed and that a case of housebreaking has been opened. “The station is currently locked down, not because of criminal activities but due to supply chain difficulties and the fact that the Police station is not easily accessible to most residents,” Otto said.

He has been participating in various tournaments across the country ever since he was young. “We have even lost count of how many medals he has brought back from these tournaments,” they told Bulletin. At the age of one, Baloyi caught meningitis and subsequently lost his hearing. “It was so bad. He was in hospital for a long time. You don’t survive meningitis and maintain your hearing,” explained his mother. The 26-year-old, whose first language is Sign Language, attended Yingisani Special Education School in Nkowankowa for primary school. Towards the end of primary school, he was awarded a scholarship to go and study at Filadelfia Secondary School for the disabled in Soshanguve. “The scholarship was so wonderful, it completely paid for his tuition and accommodation throughout his high school,” noted his parents. While at Filadelfia, Baloyi was introduced to golf. “Since then, I’ve never looked back,” he told Bulletin. After completing high school, he remained in Soshanguve to coach young people in the sport. The 26-year-old says he only recently came back to Nkowankowa in the hope to start his own golf club to train and encourage young people, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds. “My challenge is mainly in acquiring funding to start my club,” he explained. At the moment, Baloyi is a member of the First Swing Program (FSP) and continues to participate in golf tournaments and events across the country. He trains regularly at the Orangedene Golf Course. Apart from golf, Godfrey says he is also quite good at drawing.

Did You Know? • Yingisani School for Special Education is the only school for the deaf in the Mopani area. It is a primary boarding school and is based in Nkowankowa. Bulletin recently spoke to the school’s principal, Mr Joseph Nkuna, to understand how the deaf community is integrated in society, and whether there is enough awareness about the deaf community amongst us. According to Nkuna, awareness of the deaf community in society is pretty minimal. The school has recently taken upon itself the responsibility to enlighten the public of its presence. Last year it staged a march in Nkowankowa to let society, and especially people with deaf children, know that it exists. The closest secondary school available to deaf pupils in our area is Setotolwane LSEN School in Polokwane. Some deaf pupils who are lucky to get scholarships, or whose parents can afford, go to Filadelfia in Soshunguve. • Some deaf people can read lips. However, according to Nkuna, serious training is needed for such ability. “It should be easier for hearing people to learn to sign than for deaf people to read lips,” he said. • In most cases, boarding schools for the deaf allow deaf pupils to be in a community of deaf people. “The schools become quite significant in the pupils’ lives as often pupils, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, come from communities and families in which no one can sign,” said Nkuna. • Deaf people often face challenges with both higher education and finding employment. According to Nkuna, Sign Language is very different from spoken languages. Education curricula are created for hearing people and often deaf people, whose primary language is Sign Language, find it hard to adapt to the hectic language of higher education. Nkuna did, however, note that there are efforts by the Department of Basic Education to create school curricula specifically for Sign Language speakers. Deaf people also have a hard time finding job placements because of communication barriers. • According to Nkuna, the one area that highly needs professional deaf people is at schools for the deaf. “In this way, at least deaf pupils can best relate to a deaf teacher. However, the Department of Education does have a programme to adequately train teachers to teach in deaf school,” he explained. • Sign Language is not a universal language. Just as with spoken languages, Sign Language may differ according to region or country. • According to Mr and Mrs Baloyi, there can be an inherent problem with hearing people learning sign language as in our country, material to teach Sign Language to hearing people seems largely only available in English. Consequently, English often becomes the only language first language Sign Language speakers learn.

The motoring industry is a buzz at the news of Jaguar’s unveiling of their newest entrant into the compact executive market, the XE. Following its release earlier this year, the Jaguar XE roared past tough competition in the form of the BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes C-class and the Audi A4 who had controlled the compact exec market locally for quite some time. Although similar in looks to its counterparts, the XE delivers a comfortable, relaxed drive while maintaining the legendary Jag sense of style tethered to a rich history through sleek design and that unmistakeable growl. According to Jaguar, the XE is the most advanced, efficient and refined sports sedan they have ever produced. It is also the first of a new generation of cars to be launched on Jaguar’s state-of-the-art, all new Advanced Aluminium Architecture. The use of lightweight aluminium for construction of the vehicles creates an incredibly strong body, and assists in the delivery of power with responsive handling and adds to the vehicle’s aesthetics – not to mention a drop in fuel consumption. Much of the XE is inspired by its slightly burlier F-Type brother. Figure hugging seats, sports car-like analogue dials and message centre, a stocky sports steering wheel and raised centre console all adds to the cockpit style feel. Like most of the other cats in the family, the XE boasts keyless operation, all you need do is push start and XE awakens. Petrol-wise, the XE is available with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing either 198bhp or 237bhp, while a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 with 335 bhp sits at the top of the range and turns the XE into a proper performance saloon. In South Africa there are five XE models to choose from including diesel options for the enthusiast. XE introduces Jaguar’s state-of-the-art, all new Ingenium family of engines. Ingenium offers high performance and refinement with low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Mazda Southern Africa re-enters the playing field Making a comeback has never been an easy feat, unless you are one of the country’s most loved automobile brands. Although Mazda has been a part of the South African market for quite some time due to their partnering with the Ford brands, they have decided to break out on their own – and they are doing so in spectacular fashion. With their own dedicated dealer network, new model line up and cutting edge technology, Mazda Southern Africa is determined to put themselves back onto the local map. Mazda South Africa has just launched the CX-5 onto the local market. This is the latest in a long line of new models

featuring in the Japanese ﬁrm’s worldwide resurgence. The CX-5 is a crossover that competes with the likes of Toyota’s RAV4, Honda’s CRV and Volkswagen’s Tiguan but adds clever, fuel-saving Sky Activ-G engine technology to the mix. Besides the technology employed to reduce harmful emissions, the newcomer also heralds the arrival of the brand’s all-new design language referred to as Kodo — Japanese for “soul of motion”. Based upon the moment precisely before a wild animal tenses to pounce on its prey, Kodo will be the theme carried through all new Mazda products going forward. All models in the range are powered by the new Sky

Activ G engine. This 2,0-litre unit, which develops 114 kW at 6 000 r/min and 200 Nm of torque at 4 000 r/min, boasts a very high compression ratio of 13:1 and employs Mazda-developed systems to avoid detonation usually associated with such high compression. Two transmission options are available, a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic. The CX is a front-wheel drive vehicle and currently there are no four-wheel drive models or diesel powertrains on oﬀer. Diesel models will be made available in 2016.

The doyen of car dealers in Tzaneen, Mr Eddie Simpson, has decided to move his used car stand next to the Caltex petrol station in Danie Joubert Street after thirty years! Simpson worked for the then local Ford dealer as a salesman some thirty plus years ago, when he saw an opportunity to sell quality used cars. Those years used cars (mainly trade-ins) were sent to the PWV area to be sold there. Simpson rented the stand to sell used cars locally and after renting the stand on a month-to-month rental agreement throughout all these years, he has now decided to combine his used cars stand with the rest of his Simpson Motors showroom (presently just new vehicles), on the other side of the Caltex filling station.

New Suzuki Vitara set to Jimmy into the mix Suzuki commonly evokes images of powerful motorbikes and is not usually the first name that comes up in conversation regarding automobiles among off-road enthusiasts. But this year the Japanese manufacturer launched the spunky new Suzuki Vitara into the local Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) market. The new Vitara can trace its lineage back to 1988 and even the 70’s when Suzuki unveiled the Jimmy. Up until the opening of the Paris Motorshow earlier this year, the Japanese were keeping their cards close to their chest, stating only that the new Vitara would will be offered, as an option, with the company’s Allgrip allwheel-drive system. Since then, more details were released and here is what to expect from the newest kid on the all terrain block. Powering the new Vitara will be a choice of the M16 1,6 litre petrol engine with an estimated output of 88 kW and 156 N.m torque, or the D16AA 1,6 litre turbo-diesel unit which boast 88 kW and 320 N.m of torque. A five-speed manual gearbox will be connected with the petrol engine, and a six-speed manual with the turbo-diesel. A six-speed automatic will only be available with the petrol engine models. According to Suzuki, fuel consumption will be as low as four litres per 100 km for the two-wheel drive, manual turbo-diesel derivative. Those looking into tackling the road less travelled, the Vitara comes with a minimum ground clearance of 185 mm, an 18 degrees approach angle and a 28 degree departure angle. The new Vitara is similar in size to some of its rivals such as the Peugeot 2008, Nissan Juke and Skoda Yeti and has some personalized finishes added to it like the dual-tone rooftops and blacked-out window pillars. Suzuki’s AllGrip four-wheel drive system is familiar from cars such as the S-Cross and it lets you select Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock modes. For a family friendly SUV with the option to have Mirrorlink smartphone compatibility, excellent seven-inch touchscreen “sat-navs” and even radar-based safety systems, the Vitara offers a pretty good package at a very affordable rate. Vossies swem en wen Vrydag het die jaarlikse Toptien skoleswemgala in Tzaneen se splinternuwe munisipale swembad vir ‘n lekker inwyding van die puik nuwe gerief gesorg. Die Hoërskool Ben Vorster het die byeenkoms gewen. Die Vossies het nege brons-, veertien silwer- en agtien goue medaljes verower, die aflos-spanne het sewe van die sestien nommers gewen, die meisies van Ben Vorster het die res uitgestof, Zanel Steenkamp van die Vossies is as die junior victrix ludorum gekroon en Ben Vorster het uiteindelik as die algehele wenner van die byeenkoms koning gekraai. Die aflosspanne het ook sewe aflosse gewen uit die moontlike sestien. Die algehele puntestand was: Ben Vorster 583, PHS 501, Ben Viljoen 482, Piet Potgieter 461, Merensky 435, Stanford Lake College 286, Curro Heuwelkruin 126, Frans du Toit 102 en die Hoërskool Eric Louw 99. Another one for the books: Talah Woodward of Unicorn Preparatory School in Tzaneen qualiﬁed for the SA u.11 bowls team. Her Limpopo team also took silver medals for the SA bowls championship. Unicorn is very proud of Talah.

Jackson Ndhlovu of Stanford Lake College in Magoebaskloof hs been selected for Limpopo’s u.15 cricket team. He has shown strong talent and is one of the junior cricketers in the province who is tipped to become a star senior cricket player.
