Modjadjiskloof residents, municipal workers take hands

A volatile situation regarding service delivery in Modjadjiskloof was defused this week, after members of the community agreed on pro-active talks rather than destructive action. This followed after a power outage left the town without electricity and water, caused by striking municipal workers demanding money “owed to us since April last year”. When independent local contractors voluntarily stepped forward to restore the power, they were prevented from doing the work by striking workers. A stand-off between the two groups ensued. An impromptu meeting was called to address the municipal manager, Ms Gloria Mashaba. The strikers and residents then united to solve the problem amicably. This led to an official meeting between the strikers and the municipal management and the payment issue was referred for arbitration. At the same time the contractor was given the go ahead to restore the power. Negotiations between Samwu and community leaders also gave birth to a new approach in dealing with service delivery issues. • Read the full story on page 3

“In the week you will find that the municipal manager and the CFO are not in the office. They are out, they are eating that money, ‘chowing’ that money but they can’t pay these people (the municipal workers). We must put a moratorium on their travelling. They must sit there the whole year. Because you were hired there with your qualifications, so why is it that every week you go and attend courses? You are eating that money up.” • Watch the video on our Facebook.

This stern statement was made by a member of SAMWU and was directed at the Modjadjiskloof Municipal Manager, Ms Gloria Mashaba and acting CFO Mr Lesley Mamatlepa during an impromptu meeting outside the town’s public library on Tuesday morning. The meeting was called following a dispute between independent electrical contractors and striking municipal workers earlier that morning.

SADAG needs volunteers in Tzaneen and also in Giyani The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) helps callers countrywide with mental health queries and is open seven days a week from 08:00 to 20:00. The NGO is the largest mental health advocacy group in Africa and receives up to 400 calls per day. They are currently looking for compassionate, recovered patients, family members, psychologists, teachers or therapists with life experience who are able to volunteer just once or twice a month to run a support group. These could be for depression, bipolar or panic or a combination. All new volunteers will receive training from Johannesburg trainers who will be in Giyani on 16 February and in Tzaneen on 17 February.

Also available are brochures, pamphlets, training manuals, toll free numbers and help as required. Volunteering is an incredibly rewarding experience and highlights just what an important role each of us plays in our community. To find out more information please call 0800 21 22 23 or 0800 567 567 and ask for Naazia or Lebo, who will be able to arrange for you to meet their visiting trainer and answer all your questions. Their support group leaders are expected to run a group once or twice a month usually starting at 18:00 or 19:00 for two hours. Alternatively some are operated on a Saturday afternoon. They will help to find a suitable venue and arrange speakers.

Two special guests at the event were GTM-ANC councillor Edney Ntimabi and a Department of Education’s circuit manager, Ms Doreen Manzini. They were accompanied by the best performed pupils from the Shihoko, Nwanedzi, Thabini and Nkowankowa circuits. The GTM’s speaker, Mr Cassius Machimana, urged parents to continue to guide, support and encourage their children to invest quality time in their studies. The mayor said that the GTM has already awarded over 300 bursaries to financial needy pupils. “This is yet another group which continues to make us proud. The best pupils will be awarded with registration and tuition fees as part of their bursaries, to allow them entrance into tertiary institutions,” she said. — Arnold Mabunda arnold@bulletin.us.com

Residents, municipal workers take hands to confront municipality By Louis Roux & Joe Dreyer A serious threat to the well-being of residents and businesses in Modjadjiskloof was defused this week in talks between ratepayers, members of Samwu and the management of the Greater Letaba Municipality. It all started with an electrical outage where fuses had been removed from sub stations by municipal workers and also a burnt cable that required repairing. Residents affected by the outage revolted when a private electrician, Mike’s Electrics, who voluntarily offered to repair the cable, was forced by Samwu members in the electricity department to abandon the project. They demanded payment owed to them by the municipality since April last year, before any power restoration would be allowed. When they insisted on the presence of the municipal manager, Ms Gloria Mashaba, at an impromptu meeting in the Modjadjiskloof library’s garden, the residents under leadership of Mr Gullis Gouws gave them full support. The MM arrived late for the meeting due to her request to be escorted by two police officers. This annoyed the regional secretary of Samwu, Mr Sello Mononela, who said: ”What Manager cannot speak to her workforce without the presence of police officers” and requested that

the police escort remove themselves from the gathering, which they did. Mononela stated clearly that the strike by the municipal workers had nothing to do with race, but was based on anger over the unkept promises of the GLM. A meeting between Samwu members and the municipal management was held later in the day, where the dispute was referred for arbitration (which could take months to resolve). In the mean time the private electrical service company was given the go ahead to repair the cable fault and the power was back in Modjadjiskloof on Wednesday night. A large group of protesters against service delivery planned to barricade the main road on Wednesday afternoon, but was advised to target the municipal offices rather than the general public. Gouws said the establishment of a community forum is also on the cards by the residents of Modjadjiskloof. High on the agenda is a request that the delivery of electricity be taken over by Eskom and pre-paid electricity boxes be installed. The people also want Lepelle Water to take over the water supply function. By removing these two burdens from the GLM will make a big difference in service delivery for the whole community, Gouws said.

Ons Mening

Die Boodskap

Dié pad vreet skokbrekers...

15 Januarie 2016 Dr Jan Truter Ned Herv Kerk Letsitele

Goeddoentyd

Report unsolved crime cases to 0800 54 67 67 Well done! Rev Adriaan van Tonder, 2 Fees Street, Tzaneen, writes: My wife and I had to renew our firearm licences recently. I heard so many negative reports that I really was very reluctant to go. However, great was my surprise when we received excellent service from the two sergeants in the office. They are Sgt. Nkoana and Khosa. Our presence were promptly acknowledged and Sgt Nkoana immediately got up to attend to us. She listened to us and without fumbling around, presented us with the

Mr Sello Mononela, the chairman of the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in Modjadjiskloof. He took the lead in showing on Tuesday that disputes can be resolved ipeacefully and that it is not necessary to cause damage to property in order to drive home a point. Hopefully the officialdom will not let these people down by not attending to their serious problems promptly and seriously.

In hierdie land is daar baie hiervan nodig.

Let wel: Hulle sê nie so nie! • Dis glo ‘n nuwe jaar; skrikkeljaar, nogal. Voorspoed. Wees asseblief tog net geduldig.

Briewe • Letters required papers to be completed. She then explained in detail exactly what is required and what supporting documents we need to attach. She advised us the time the office was open. It took less than half an hour. We went home, completed the forms and returned to her just after 14:00 and again, she assisted us immediately and within three quarters of an hour we were done, forms completed, SMS received, payments

made. I have nothing but the greatest admiration for the absolutely professional way in which we were treated. Sgt. Khosa got up without being asked and assisted my wife with the fingerprints and thereafter also assisted her to get her hands cleaned. Sgts Nkoana and Khosa, I salute you on your professional conduct and showing that our systems can work properly and efficiently when we are proud on doing what we do. My wife and I are really impressed with your service. Ke a leboga.

Plaza pampers Marumofase needy pupils The Maake centre Management together with Sleep Masters, Cell phone shop, Nizams, Chisa nyama and Fish and chips extended a caring hand when they donated school pullovers, backpacks, school shoes and stationery to Marumofase needy school children. Fourteen learners from Marumofase Full Service School in Lenyenye will now go to school in full school uniform. These learners come from poor families, and some of them did not have school shoes. The principal, Mr Sibanda, said the donation would help the learners and give them a sense of belonging. “Without uniforms, they were Maake centre management, store managers Marumofase Full Service School principal, SGB Member just children who felt lost. We’re very grateful for this contribution to improving the lives of and learners.

our learners. We hope other private companies will follow in Plaza’s footsteps,” said Sibanda. Member of the school governing body (SGB), Mr Mabela Tshidi, said she was very grateful that the children finally had full uniform to wear to school. “I am filled with happiness, I give thanks to Maake plaza, for the shoes, clothes, stationery and back packs.” she said. The schools former principal Mr. George Ramodike continues to lend a helping hand and supporting the school even after serving the school for the past 27 years. Maake centre manager, Orry Mbedzi said this initiative has been running since the opening of the centre. “Each and every year we pick a local school in Maake and the surrounding area and donate school uniforms to the needy learners.” Said Mbedzi. – Phidelia Rikhotso: phidelia@bulletin.us.com

Oppie Kassie On the Telly

Suid-Afrika in ‘n internasionale binneshuise hokkie-toernooi verteenwoordig.

So, Oubal was nie so geskok oor Amla se bedanking as kaptein soos wat die hoofop-

Maak ‘n standpunt deur ‘n dubbe“He who speaks without modesty will find it le honderdtal aan te teken en bedank dan, difficult to make his words good.” — Confucius
