Hail hits hard
Members of the Tzaneen avo study group gathered on Monday on the farm of Mr Paul Wiltshire in Georges Valley, to discuss

rehabilitation plans after the destruction caused by the fiercest hailstorm in many years. Subtrop facilitated the meeting.
The rehabilitation of orchards is already in process from Georges Valley to Mooketsi, after the Tzaneen area was hit by the most devastating hailstorm in many years last Thursday night. Entire avo crops were lost by some farmers, while severe damage was done on mega farms like Westfalia in Politsi and ZZ2 in Mooketsi. An estimated 1,2 million cartons or more are lost for the avo export market. The crop damage on at least sixteen farms is 100%, as the remaining fruit are not suitable due to bruises caused by the hail. Mr Derek Donkin, chairman of the SA Avo Growers Association (SAAGA) and CEO of Subtrop in Tzaneen, said it was the fiercest hailstorm to hit the area in twenty years. Apart from the estimated R40 million in export losses, the damage to orchards will also have an adverse effect of millions on yields and revenue for the next three years. It all started on the farm Letaba Drift of Mr Paul Wiltshire in Georges Valley at around 20:00 in the evening, destroying his entire crop and causing huge damage to well established orchards. From there it moved towards Politsi, Haenertsburg, Houtboschdorp and Mooketsi.

White PVA paint is applied to the stems of pruned avo trees to protect it against sunburn and infesting bacteria. The owners of Letaba Drift lost their whole avo crop in last week’s hailstorm. Their paint bill amounts to R150 000.
Farmers said the hailstones were somewhat smaller than golf balls, but had a rough surface. Driven by a strong wind, this led to severe damage on tree trunks and branches. In the Politsi area macadamia growers were hard hit by the storm, as many of the immature nuts were felled to the ground and orchards damaged. Mr Andries Bester of Subtrop co-ordinated a meeting with all affected stakeholders on Monday, to discuss rehabilitation plans and revised fertilizer and irrigation programmes to reduce input costs drastically. Farmers were also advised to heavy pruning of damaged trees and the timeous treatThe banana crop of ment of scars against Mr Stoffel Albertyn pests and diseases. in Georges Valley was Mr Bram Snijder, probadly damaged by the hailstorm last week. duction manager of Afrupro who attended the meeting, said the hailstorm will have a significant effect on the estimated 14 million cartons of avo’s for export this year. It will also have a drastic effect on the price of avo’s at the local markets. “The harvest season is about to start within a week or two, but for some there will be no crop this year,” Snijder said. • More photos on p 2

The granddaughter of Mthavini claims that she has a witness who can vouch that the victim was assaulted The MEC of the Department of Health in Limpopo said they were also busy conducting investigations as to what exactly happened, and asked anyone with information regarding the alleged incident to pass it on to the department or the SAPS. The department’s spokesperson was not available for comment yesterday. Survival of the fittest for small farmers Farmers need to be resilient and focus on the future by implementing survival strategies to deal with disasters, such as the drought, says Mr Dawie Maree, head of information and marketing at FNB Business Agriculture. He says the current drought, being escalated by a strong El Nino and global warming, has had the biggest impact on the income and survival of farmers since 1992. It has also had far reaching consequences for the greater SA economy as it impacts on food prices, inflation and even employment. “For small-holder and subsistence
farmers, it is now survival of the fittest.” Maree suggested essential tips to overcome the impact of the drought and added that it has become imperative to adopt modern farming techniques and strategies in order to grow revenue. He mentioned drought and cash flow management and irrigation as important strategies to be considered. Diversification of crops and livestock is also important. If a planting season is missed, the farmer should identify other means of generating income. Planting fields that have been af-
fected by the drought, may require a much different application of fertilizer, while using seeds more resistant to the drought will provide a better yield. Maree said a well managed farm system should also include the gathering of up-to-date information for business decisions in periods of disaster, while soil testing is highly recommended as it changes following a drought. “The farming industry in SA has been through several hurdles and survived. There is no doubt that it will continue to thrive, even beyond the current drought,” Maree said.

SA bans leopard trophy hunting By Don Pinnock It is almost impossible to know how leopards are faring in South Africa. They are secretive animals that are mainly nocturnal, solitary, and range over huge areas. Counting them requires intensive research using expensive technology such as camera traps, which can only be deployed over small areas, far smaller than the areas in which hunting quotas are determined. Hunting them will speed up their extinction. The Department of Environmental Affairs has set to zero all hunting permits for leopards in South Africa – which is, effectively, a total ban on hunting the cats. This follows an alert by its Scientific Authority that the number of leopards in the country was unknown, and that trophy hunting posed a high risk to the survival of the species. The DEA ban, sent to all provincial authorities, cancels all leopard export permits for 2016. Under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), South Africa is permitted to allocate 150 leopard trophy export permits a year. Early warning of possible permit curtailment appeared in the Government Gazette late last year indicating that if guidelines were not adhered to, provincial quotas would be set to zero. At the time the DEA issued what it described, rather cryptically, as a “negative non-detrimental finding”, meaning that hunting was likely to have a damaging effect on the species. It listed threats to leopards as excessive legal and illegal shooting of “damage-causing animals,” poorly managed trophy hunt-

ing, illegal trade in leopard skins for cultural and religious attire and generally poor monitoring of hunts and permit allocation. The Research Authority found that leopards: Had a low reproductive rate; Their distribution was fragmented; Their abundance and population trend was uncertain; Illegal off-take was uncertain; There was little control of harvesting (especially illegal harvesting) which was high; Confidence in harvest management and monitoring was low; Incentives for conservation in the country were low; Only between 5% and 15% of leopard habitat was strictly protected. Commenting on the Gazette notice at the time, Guy Balme of the environmental NGO Panthera said: “We just don’t know how leopards are faring in South Africa. They’re secretive, mainly nocturnal, solitary and range over huge areas. Counting them requires intensive research using expensive technology such as camera traps, which can only be deployed over small areas, far smaller than the areas in which hunting quotas are determined. “It seems prudent that hunting should only continue once the appropriate measures are in place. Only then can we be confident that the practice is sustainable and not putting additional pressure on leopard populations already under a great deal of strain from other threats.” The trophy ban is in place throughout this year. According to the DEA statement, the Scientific Authority will then review the situation. It will also develop norms and
standards for the management and monitoring of leopard hunting throughout the country. Kelly Marnewick, the Environmental Wildlife Trust’s carnivore conservation manager, supported the ban. “It is important to ensure that any wildlife trade we do is sustainable,” she said. “If we cannot do that, it’s highly problematical. We need a trade ban until we can get to that. “Record keeping on trophy hunting in this country is shocking. We haven’t been recording age, sex or size of trophies. If our hunting fraternity is serious about using wildlife sustainably they will embrace this ban and find ways to work with government until trade is sustainable.” Helen Turnbull of the Cape Leopard Trust also supported the move. She said the trust was pleased to see that common sense has prevailed, and that the government would maintain the ban until provinces had got their acts together. Andrew Muir of the Wilderness Foundation said the ban was good news, but noted that it was an interim measure while norms and standards were being put in place. “We cannot stress enough the need for high quality research on the population numbers, make-up and distribution of leopards, especially in core conservation areas,” he said. “Leopards are charismatic and an apex species. Until we know population numbers and carrying capacity we should not hunt them.”

Late last year some of the business owners called the Tzaneen Police, the security company in charge of the Mall, the centre manager and the municipal traffic department to sort out the drunken revelry. The business owners claim that the authorities did nothing... “The toilets were in a state, the smell of urine was on the walls of the building, litter and vomit after some of the drunken parties were all over and the security guard was found sleeping behind the locked toilet door. He wrote false entries into the log book stating that all was well at 22:00, but all was not well at 22:00 and he was not on duty, but suspected to have partied with the revelers”, some of the business owners alleged. People flocked to the Berry Festival The Berry Trail Run, held at Blueberry Heights, Haenertsburg, was the highlight of the Magoebaskloof Berry Festival. Many say it’s one of the most beautiful trails in the country. It had rained the previous night so the track was quite muddy. Runners said that once they got to the top of the initial formidably steep incline, the track winds alongside water or in between the forests surrounding the village of Haenertsburg. The results of the 9 km race for men
was Cou Pienaar (first), Kuno Venter (second), Daniel Danes (third). The results of the 9 km ladies’ race was Andri Prinsloo (1), Julie Cornelius (2), Karin Armstrong (3). The results of the 5 km race for men was Adrian Moore (1), Juan Winter (2), Phillip Donovan (3). The results of the 5 km for ladies was Reece Bain (1), Riandi Venter (2) Thea-Mari Venter (3). The results of the 5 km boys was Jack Stewart (1), Tyler Rance (2), Kyle Allison (3). Various berry dishes and drinks
were available at all the village restaurants. The open market outside the Haenertsburg Post Office sold fresh punnets of blueberries, raspberries and gooseberries. In between were stalls serving craft beer, hot food and handicrafts. Most notable was the wire and bead artist from Pilgrim’s Rest, Mpumalanga. Live music was by Steven Howells from the Space Kadets. — Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com

Pupils on main road run safety patrols
Motorists who travel on the main road between Eiland (from either Tarentaalrand or Letsitele) and Giyani should take care at Mageva village, where six pupils of the Charlie Rhangani’s Primary School set up a scholar patrol in the mornings and again in the afternoons after school. The six dedicated volunteers assist fellow
pupils to safely cross the road. The road in the area is infamous for accidents and a number of pedestrians have been knocked over in the area in recent years. The patrol members record the names of pupils who don’t co-operate and refuse to use the crossing where the safety patrol is being set up daily. They also take the registration numbers of vehicles

According to Arrive Alive scholar patrol is an important part of road safety education and essential to enhancing the safety of scholars at their schools. Not only does it regulate traffic, improve speed calming and facilitate safe crossing of the road but also instils in the minds of young pedestrians an awareness of the importance of road safety. Gogo Somisa laid to rest… 125-year-old Ms Somisa Mahori from Xihoko Village outside Tzaneen was laid to rest on Saturday. The Limpopo granny was considered to be the oldest person in the world. Her age never stopped her from having a happy and normal life with her family. “She was fortunate in that she was regularly invited to celebrate his birthday with the late Nelson Mandela. Madiba arranged for special transport for her to get to the venue,” Ms Mavis Mahori said. Mr Calvin Bvuma said, ”She once called a family meeting where she told the family that she wished God would take her, as she was tired of pain and suffering”. One of her grandsons, Mr T Mahori, said, “She was like a mother to me as I was
raised by her from childhood when my mother was sick”. Many people described gogo Mahori as a loving and caring person who held everyone in the family’s best interest at heart. She was said to have strived to ensure that each and everyone within the family gets a proper education. Impact of Local Government Elections on the budget cycle of local municipalities 2016/17: How do we participate? This year is probably the most important for South Africans since the country became a democracy in 1994. Our economy is to a certain extent in tatters, race relations are tense, the President’s troubles have become more and more serious, the country is experiencing one of the worst 2016 is election year for local government. For us as members of our local communities, it is imperative to know what the impact will be on the annual municipal financial cycle such as the IDP and the Municipal Budget for 2016/17, because we will be on the receiving end if this process is not managed well. Action now will guide us to assist municipalities and prevent unnecessary complications for the next financial year. We don’t have to look far, because the MFMA*1circular No. 78, issued by the National Treasury called the “Municipal Budget Circular for the 2016/17 MTREF*2”, provide local communities and municipalities with clear guidelines. The web site National Treasury (www.treasury.gov.za) is one of the most amazing sources of quality information available to all of us free of charge. From the home

“Life should not be estimated exclusively by the standard of dollars and cents.” — Charles Goodyear
