‘Death’ Valley
Closed at last Reports and photos of the Georges Valley road crisis by Joe Dreyer

The R528 through George’s Valley is officially closed to heavy vehicles as of Wednesday this week. Many vehicles were badly damaged this week after hitting a massive sinkhole. An inspection team determined the
road to be unsafe for use after discovering that the galvanised culvert beneath the road’s surface had lost “structural integrity”. What was believed to be a pothole has now officially been labelled a sinkhole. Motorists
are urged to use alternative routes when travelling. Visit our website for a video on the dangers of this section of the road and browse more images on the imminent collapse of the culvert.

the R528 was officially closed to heavy vehicles the day before, because of a life-threatening sink hole. It is reported that residents of Magoebaskloof removed the road
closure signs the night before and trucks were still using the route. “We were granted permission by Mr Victor Khumalo, the head of Provincial Traffic in Tzaneen to use our own
vehicles to block the road, as the truck drivers were paying no heed to the traffic officers stationed there,” said a member of the George’s Valley Residents Association. “It seems that now the situation has turned into a case of neighbourhood versus neighbourhood.”

Polokwane comes to Tzaneen
In the past cancer patients in the Tzaneen area not on medical aid, had to travel to Polokwane for chemotherapy. This has all changed and chemotherapy is now administered at the Tzaneen Care Centre at 36 Maritz Street. Heading up the chemotherapy division is dr Tumelo Moyaba from Polokwane. He administers chemotherapy every Monday between 09:00 and midday. During this time he also consults with patients who are too ill to receive chemotherapy. Moyaba, born in Musina, was the youngest person in the country to qualify as an oncologist at the age of 29 in 2014. He studied for his medical degree as well as his four-year oncology degree at the University of KwaZu-
lu-Natal. He trained at the fairly new and sophisticated Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Cato Manor, Durban. He opened his private practice in Polokwane at 64 Plein Street in 2015. He says: “Oncology is an ever changing field as there are always new advances in treatment. This is particularly so in the treatment of prostate and breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer. “Brachytherapy is now avail-

able for early stage prostate cancer. Men like to ignore things and also don’t like invasive examinations. That’s all a thing of the past with the advent of PSA screening for men. A recent treatment for patients with brain tumours, inaccessible by operation, is stereotactic radiotherapy.“ On the issue of diet Moyaba says, “Diet has gained prominence due to the fact that processed foods are considered a
cancer trigger. However there is no processed data as yet on this matter. What definitely does cause cancer is nicotine and certain viruses.” When asked about the contentious and as yet illegal issue of cannabis oil, Moyaba said: “There is not enough research on cannabis oil. However, terminal patients who are not on pills for pain take cannabis oil and it’s known to work. However, there’s still no hard evidence that it’s effective all round.” He added that “cancer is on the increase in South Africa and under reported as the focus is on AIDS”. “I reckon that in fifteen years time cancer will overtake AIDS,” he said. — Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com
Rees is bereikbaar by 073 166 3651 — as daar ‘n seilende koue kalant in jou kamer sy kop uitsteek.
BLUEPRINT 581 BULLETIN/E

‘Death’ Valley closed for heavy vehicles Fragments of a sump from a vehicle after it hit the sinkhole.

The notorious R528 between Tzaneen and Haenertsburg added at least eight vehicles and a truck to its ever increasing tally this week — and finally authorities seem to be paying attention. In the 24 hours between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, a local towing service had their hands full with break downs as one after the other, motorists fell victim to one particular section of this road. Roughly 22 kilometres in the direction of Haenertsburg when travelling from Tzaneen the road spirals downhill into an S-bend with the final corner entering a sharp incline back to the top. There are no shoulders along this narrow section of the route and a sheer four metre drop hugs the road surface on either side. Motorists travelling in either direction

are blind to approaching traffic until entering the bend. It is right here, in the middle of the already treacherous bend, where a dip the size of a regular family sedan has formed with no way of evading it without going off-road or hitting oncoming traffic. “This has now become ridiculous and the residents along George’s Valley are fed up with the lack of interest shown by Limpopo’s roads department to rectify the situation. People are going to die here and ‘sorry’ won’t console their grieving families,” said one angry member of the George’s Valley Residents Association (GVRA) at the scene. According to him, the problem lies with the heavy vehicle operators who use the R528 in order to evade the weighbridge at Mooketsi.

What are we looking for in life?
• Justice, that all are treated fairly under the law. • Education for all, the building up of our nation to be true leaders. • Security, the ability to live our life in safety and not fear. • Unity, the coming together of all irrespective of race or creed. • Sustainability, enabling all to live and survive in this world.
So how does this all fit into our Christian lives here on earth? Taking the first letters of each statement we find the answer: JESUS, yes, He is the answer to all our strife and tribulations, but this needs faith, faith in someone we have never seen, yet believe is alive and lives with each of us. This is not an easy concept to grip, but then again we believe that tomorrow we will wake up. We have not seen tomorrow yet we believe. One may argue “How can God/Jesus be with all of us at the same time?” We forget that God is God and through Him all things are possible. A concept that needs faith and trust. Is this just an inbred ability that is in all of us? I believe so, but it needs work, we need to live our lives in hope, hope for the future, hope for love and most importantly hope that we are acceptable to Christ. Yet, we often forget, that God loved us first, that is why He created us. We are all different in makeup, male, female, different hues of colour, beliefs etc. Yet we are all one in God’s eyes, after all we were created in His image. But what is God’s image? If we cannot see Him how can we know what He looks like? Now this is where faith comes in, if we truly believe there is a God and we trust in Him, He will enable us to live in His image. God is a God of love and if we love one another as He loves us it becomes a lot simpler. Love drives the wheels of our existence, if we do not love ourselves how can we love someone else? Love is an expression of our true feelings for ourselves and for one another. Spreading this love takes time and effort and often we complain that we do not have enough time and if it is worth the effort. God sees how much we try and will always give us time, even in the busiest schedule of our lives. A smile, a thank you, can work wonders in someone’s lives. This is just a small way of showing our love for others, sharing in God’s love for us no matter how we have rejected His promises to us. So my message to you all is to follow in Christ’s footsteps and believe that through Him all things are possible. God Bless.
Supreme Court of Appeal finds SA’s conduct ‘disgraceful’ in Bashir case South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) on Tuesday accused the SA government of “disgraceful conduct” in allowing Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to leave the country, despite an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC). Bashir was not arrested while attending an African Union summit in Johannesburg last year as the South African government claimed he had immunity as the head of a member state. When an emergency order was obtained from the High Court during the summit ordering Bashir’s arrest, government lawyers admitted he had flown out of the country just a few hours earlier. The government subsequently filed a plea against the arrest order at the SCA. “The assurances that he was still in the country given to the (High) Court at the commencement and during the course of
argument were false,” the SCA judges said. “It was disgraceful conduct.” It was also unlawful The SCA ruled that the failure to arrest Bashir was unlawful and dismissed the government’s appeal. South Africa is a signatory of the Haguebased ICC, which wants Bashir arrested for alleged war crimes related to the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan.
The South African Litigation Centre (SALC) hailed the court ruling, saying it meant Bashir must be arrested if he returned to South Africa. “The government should seek to uphold the rule of law instead of shielding suspected war criminals and the Supreme Court of Appeal has made this clear today,” SALC director Kaajal Ramjathan-Keogh said. The decision by South Africa not to arrest Bashir sparked international condemnation, which was met with a threat from Pretoria to withdraw its membership with the ICC. The Sudanese leader has evaded justice since his indictment in 2009 for alleged crimes in the Darfur conflict in which 300,000 people were killed and two million forced to flee their homes. The South African government made no immediate announcement on whether it would appeal against Tuesday’s ruling.

Successful fundraiser held for Care Group The Tzaneen Care Group (TCG) is making a huge difference in taking care of the emotional and physical needs of terminally ill people and their immediate families. The Group held its first major fundraiser at Merensky High School on Friday evening.
Ms Nicolette Steel from Pretoria gave an inspirational and heartfelt talk on what it’s like caring for her terminally ill mother in her home as she battles cancer. The TCG’s chairlady, Ms Yasmeen Moosa, addressed the audience and thanked everyone for their moral and financial support with the opening of the Tzaneen Care Centre at 36 Maritz Street. Moosa stated that the twenty-odd volunteers are all qualified in some discipline. There are registered trained nurses, attorneys, social workers and others. The Cen-
tre also buys medical equipment, like hospital beds, that are loaned out to the community. Plans for the future will include free screening. The black and pink themed tables were bedecked with snacks from The Red Plate in Haenertsburg and owner, Ms Colleen Venter, used the TCG’s purple cancer logo on one of the desserts. Items were auctioned and lucky numbers received various prizes, including a stay and meal at the Coach House Hotel in Agatha and a treatment from the beauty salon Forever Radiant. All proceeds will go towards caring for the terminally ill in the Tzaneen community. — Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com

Twenty underprivileged pupils from Rathaga Primary school in Bodupe Village, Bolodedu, were overjoyed when they received brand new school uniforms from Sadmon Projects and Consulting and the Greater Letaba Municipality. Teachers and parents heaped praise upon the highly esteemed Sadmon and the GLM for the generosity and for bettering the life of the needy pupils. The recipients of the uniforms could barely contain their excitement and are relieved that they can now proudly attend school wearing their uniforms. The Mayor of Greater Letaba Municipality, Mr Godfrey City Modjadji, reiterated the dire need to properly dress, educate and empower the children. “We are grateful because Sadmon came to our aid by
Brave Agatha man fought six intruders to protect his family Super brave and concerned Mr Greg Wilson of Agatha fought man alone against six intruders during a farm attack early Monday morning. The safety of his family was the only thing he could think of, and that gave him almost supernatural power to stand up against the six men. According to reports the incident occurred just after 05:00 when Greg heard a noise at the kitchen door. He went to investigate and found one man attempting to enter their home. He wrestled the man to the ground, but the suspect managed to escape leaving behind a pistol and a few other items on the lawn. Greg and his wife, Sandy, were standing in the kitchen a few moments later, contemplating the event, when a man entered the kitchen door wielding a pistol. “We had called for help and were busy discussing what happened when suddenly a hand holding a gun appeared through the
door. I screamed and ran to the kids’ room, where I locked myself in with them,” recalled Sandy. “Greg stayed in the kitchen to confront the intruder. There were a few loud bangs and glass shattering on the other end of the house as our glass door shattered. I heard loud scuffling and men shouting at each other. I knew then that there were more of them. They wanted guns and the keys to the security gate that was protecting me and our children from them. “The men asked my husband if we had guns in the house. He said no and asked them if they wanted the tv and other electronics instead. At this point I heard some more scuffling and loud conversation. When it was quiet and I could hear that they were gone, I came out of the room and saw that Greg was in need of medical attention so we rushed off to hospital.” Greg had been hit over the head with a rock by one of the suspects
during the skirmish, but had not lost consciousness. He was treated later that morning at Mediclinic Tzaneen and at the time of talking to Bulletin, Greg and Sandy were underway back home. Members of Northern Security responded to the call and met with SAPS patrol units who accompanied them to the Wilson household. Upon their arrival on the scene they did a search of the surroundings as it was believed that the suspects may have been in the vicinity. The search continued and a few hours later a private helicopter had joined the Politsi SAPS K-9 unit in the search. At roughly 14:00 that afternoon the search was called off and at the time of going to print, the suspects were still at large. “We won’t be staying there for a while. We just don’t think it’s safe and we are all still pretty shocked at what happened.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Emelina Monyepao (73), the grandmother of Mahlatse Monyepao who is in Gr 4, said she was extremely happy for what the donor has done. “If it wasn’t for his good heart I would have had to use my social grant money to buy a uniform for my grandson, as her mother is sick and unemployed,” said Monyepao. – Phidelia Rikhotso phidelia@bulletin.us.com

Tooley, a Rhodes uniT A ZW RE versity graduate, togethT AK A E L A RIVE R R er with husband Rob and adult children, Luca, Rebecca and Lulu, always makes one feel welcome One of the reasons for the meteoric success of Mina’s is the Tooley family’s attitude towards customers and their striving for excellence in whatever they do. Ms Tooley is also an expert in event planning Fresh vegetables, nuts and a small quiche with and Sunday was testimony to her expertise in this field. couscous from the Red Plate.

Mina’s is an event offering very special cuisine in the Haenertsburg area as well as craft beer, wine and live laid back music. The stalls start on the stoep of a large farmhouse. Inside it’s just one aroma after another and one delicious stall after another preparing food. Outside are long trestle tables with benches that can seat some 200 people. There are logs for sitting, a kiddies’ playground with sandpit nearby and all of this under huge, old oak trees with a view that ‘skriks for niks’. To get to Mina’s turn off onto the Cheerio Road outside Haenertsburg, and head along a 7 km well sign-posted dirt road. The farm lies on the banks of the Broederstroom and is home to the Tooley family. Mina’s is held the first Sunday of March, June, September and December. Last Sunday was a perfect sunny day. Some of the food stalls were the Red Plate with fresh dishes from the lakes and gardens; the Pot & Plow
Fresh trout from the Red Plate.
Some twenty years ago Ms Tooley ran the successful restaurant Greenwood’s in the village. At the time she was pregnant with Lulu, yet her multi-tasking abilities let her carry off all of it with aplomb. Mina’s is definitely a Sunday to ring in red on your calendar. The good music from Steve Howells and his friends, the food, the drink and the cool people made this a pleasant Sunday to look forward to repeating every three months. — Sue Ettmayr

Sheldon Muller het as individu deelgeneem.

Laurentia was tweede in gewigstoot. Op die foto is Christelle en Laurentia.

Geel kaart vir fout-berig
The Duiwelskloof Club Singles Champions for 2016: Rosemary Atherstone and Zane Fanie.
Ampie Greyling
Zane Fanie
New bowls champs for Duiwelskloof crowned The Duiwelskloof Bowls Club singles finals — the Ladies’ & Men’s Open, Men’s Handicap and Novices Finals — were fought out bvy the club’s best players over the past weekend. Zane Fanie won both the Handicap Singles and the Open Singles for 2016, with Johan Benade ending up as runner-up.
Rosemary Atherstone is this year’s Ladies Singles champion and defending champion Di de Wet ended as the runner-up. In the Novices competition, Ampie Greyling took the Cup against runner up Martin Bensch. • The Men’s Singles Plate competition between Gullis Gouws & Leon de Wet will take place on a later date.
The pride of Stanford Zane Fanie and runner-up Johan Benade.
Rosemary Atherstone and Di de Wet.
We’ve added an extra sport page... see page 14 for more. “Love fifteen.” “What? The ball was in!” “The ball was out, Mr McEnroe, love fifteen.” “It was in!” [Breek raket op baan.] “Abuse of court, love thirty!”
Stanford Lake College bestowed special colours upon a number of their top achievers in the fields of culture and athletics. The three top candidates (who have also qualified for the ASA championships) are: Lia Revelas for: Ben Vorster Night Race — Best junior track athlete, Independent Schools Athletics — Junior Victrix Ludorum and Small Schools Athletics — Junior Vic-
trix Ludorum. Lia also qualified for the ASA Nationals during the school holidays in Germiston; Ruben Caroto: Small Schools Athletics — Junior Victor Ludorum and qualified for the ASA Nationals. Mfumo Mongwe: Ben Vorster Night Race — Best senior track athlete and Senior Victor Ludorum; also qualified for the ASA Nationals.
