Darkness threatens

A collapse of the electrical system that could leave Tzaneen — indeed the total territory it extends over — without any electricity supply whatsoever, is imminent. In fact, it is a matter of luck that it has not happened yet. It is foreseen that in such an event a total blackout — that would be a lot worse than the horrifying dark weekend of 2011 — could cause great-scale chaos and fatal financial losses in the area. Yet the Greater Tzaneen Municipality is clearly not treating this looming crisis with the required urgency and the situation has deteriorated to an extent where the area is doomed if something drastic is not done. It will need higher authority to take drastic steps to save the Tzaneen area from a catastrophe. The Bulletin has managed to obtain a copy of an audit report on the GTM’s electrical infrastructure and the desperate situation facing the area, by the National Electricity Regulator of SA (Nersa). It took three months of persistence trying to finally get a copy of the audit report. The report makes for interesting, if not alarming reading of findings on the dilapidated network. It is clear that the absolute minimum has been done since 1994 to maintain and improve the network. * Interesting — though extremely worrisome — facts are: • The current replacement value of the network is R1,4 billion; • It will need close to (or even more than) R600 million to uplift the infrastructure; • The GTM’s electrical department is in dire need of quali-

Rural ares:FREE • Platteland: GRATIS

fied personnel, vehicles (especially 4x4’s) are often not available (due to poor maintenance), equipment is insufficient and the safety of personnel and the public is compromised; • Non-compliance in terms of the GTM’s licence (issued by Nersa) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act cannot be allowed to continue. Despite all this the GTM initially allowed for no budget for the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 financial years. For the 2018/2019 financial year an amount of R5 million (!) was allowed for a “non-specific” project which is said to be for high mast lighting in a more rural area(s). However, high mast lighting adds no value to the system, it is not maintenance and it will in fact increase the demand on the network. It is understood that the council has since adapted the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) to allow for about R17 million and/or a loan of R20 million for the network for the new financial year. We will publish some more alarming information next week. Our attempts to get an appointment with a senior councillor to discuss the threat facing Tzaneen and surroundings, failed — since the councillor has been out of town and had to attend to a number of outstanding appointments. (Read our Opinion on page 6) • We did not try to speak to the GTM’s acting manager of communications, since he has failed at numerous occations to respond to our enquiries. — Francois Aucamp editor@bulletin.us.com

Restore rights to dignity in Vuwani MP Desiree van der Walt, the DA’s shadow deputy minister of basic education, has called for the rights to dignity in the Vuwani area to be restored. Herewith is her full speech on the matter, which she delivered in Parliament. The burning of our children’s schools is unacceptable by any standard. We have lost hundreds of millions of Rands that could have been spent on improving education facilities for those who do not have any. I know Vuwani very well. It is one of the most beautiful parts of my province, but also one of the poorest. Many learners in the area get their daily meals at school. And so it was painful to learn that, out of desperation to save their schools, people resorted to using the milk of the school’s feeding scheme in an attempt to put out the fires. When I visited Vuwani after the schools were torched, I spoke to a mother whose four children had no school left to go to. She was in tears, as she asked what would happen to her children if they could not finish their education. Every cent of her small income is already spent on giving her children the opportunities she never had. Where will she get the R1 200 per month it will cost to transport her children to other schools? What happened in Vuwani is a tragedy, and it should not be used as a petty point scoring exercise. On that note, I would like to thank the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga, whose quick oversight and action in meeting with stakeholders and putting

plans in action deserves applause. At the same time, we need to be honest about what led to this tragedy so that it is never repeated. In this regard, one cannot ignore the fact that Minister Motshekga’s counterparts, the Premier of Limpopo, the MEC, as well as the Limpopo Education Department once again let her down. Let’s be honest, the Vuwani tragedy began with “Team empty promises”, led by the President and the Premier of Limpopo. Besides the promises, they are not serious about that important ingredient of good governance: public participation. Does Premier Mathabatha really think the people of Vuwani are fools? Does he think they believe him when he says they will get the best services in this new municipality? Where will the delivery of services happen on 4 August — under the trees? Where will the municipal services to the schools come from? Will they have water, electricity and refuse removal? How is it possible that an ANC councillor alleged to be involved in torching of schools can ignore the Rights in our Constitution, which he has to protect, promote and abide by? How did he serve the people of Vuwani? Does he understand that: • Everyone has the right to a basic education; • A child’s best interests are of paramount importance in every matter concerning the child; • Everyone has inherent dignity and the right to have their dignity respected and protected?

The Freedom Charter says: • “Education shall be universal and equal for all children…” • “The law shall guarantee to all their right to educate their children” • “Teachers shall have the rights of other citizens”. Being taught in unsafe schools, without proper learning materials, without a desk and a chair, without libraries and science laboratories, without water and proper sanitation is not dignified and is not equal. Education is a constitutional right, a basic human right, a strategic priority and the best possible vehicle to empower South Africans and to develop our country. We must ensure that every child has an opportunity to learn in a safe, supportive environment that is conducive to learning. This is not happening in Limpopo, where the matric pass rate dropped from 72,9% to 65,9% last year. The Limpopo Department of Education needs to be put back under full administration of the National Department, as they are clearly incapable of managing themselves. But, ultimately, the problem in Limpopo is a political one. ANC politicians — from the councillors to the MPL’s to the MEC’s to the Premier — have let the people down. There is no emergency plan in this Department, yet many warnings to indeed adopt one. The children must be in class being taught and not cleaning-up their school’s classrooms after violent protests. Who would have thought that the text book crisis of three years would one day be seen as a small event, compared to the chaos of schools being burnt to the ground?

Veld fires can put farmers back into crisis Farmers that are already struggling financially due to the impact of the drought could face further losses as the risk of veld fires increases due to the dry winter period. Dawie Maree, head of information and marketing at FNB Business Agriculture says given the current situation in the agricultural sector, veld fires have the potential to put farmers back into crisis as the industry has still not fully recovered from the severe impact of the recent drought. During the dry winter season, veld fires can spread quickly, destroying farms and leaving relentless distraction. It has never been more important to put measures in place to protect farms against veld fires. Farmers have exhausted most of their resources and simply can-

not afford to deal with another major catastrophe. Maree says veld fires can lead to severe production shortages, further impacting on food price inflation and our ability to supply the export market. Livestock farmers who are currently re-building their herds could also suffer major setbacks due to damaged pastures, grazing land, water and transport infrastructure. “Although veld fires are not unique to the country, their impact has been heightened due to changing weather conditions. As a result, farmers must not sit back and wait for the worst to come. Long-term disaster risk management strategies should be put in place to manage and control the risks,” cautions Maree. He advises farmers to consid-

er implementing the following measures to mitigate against veld fire risks: • Fire management plan — this plan provides farmers with polices and guidelines of how to protect their farms, workers and livestock against veld fires. It further advises farmers and employees on the steps to take during fire situations and who to contact for emergencies. • Collaboration — both government and the private sector should be commended for their role in educating and raising awareness on the risks associated with veld fires. It is important for farmers to continue working together, share ideas and solutions on how to tackle this risk. • Maintaining farm and fire equipment — faulty machinery can lead to veld fires if it is

not checked and maintained on a regular basis. Farmers must regularly check and ensure that farm and fire-fighting equipment is in good working order. This is essential to protect livestock, other assets and employees in the event of a fire. • Firebreaks — although firebreaks cannot completely protect farmers against large spreading veld fires, they play an important role in containing and controlling fires on the farm and are compulsory by law. • Educating staff — employees should constantly be educated and trained on how to deal with fire situations. • Insurance — without adequate cover in place, farmers would not be able to recover from financial losses in the event of a fire or accident.

More water restrictions for Tzn! Further water restrictions are to be imposed on the Tzaneen Dam for agricultureal and domestic use. The Groter Letaba Stakeholder Operating Forum (SOF) recommended yesterday that farmers will only be allocated 27% for irrigation, after they voluntarily limited their use to 50% since last year. The 10% limit on domestic use was also adapted, for-

cing municipal and household users to only 78% of the available water supply. The crucial meeting on water restrictions was attended by only twelve stakeholders out of a possible 65 members on the invitation list. The recommendations will only be applied after being published in the Government Gazette.

The state veterinarian services has embarked on a major drive to encourage pet owners to have their animals vaccinated against rabies, free of charge, following an outbreak of the disease. This is due to an undisclosed number of reported rabies cases in the Tzaneen area recently. State veterinarian dr Kgabo Letswalo, said rabies is a contagious and deadly viral disease, causing damage to the brain and the spinal cord. She said it affects both humans and animals, and it result in death once disease symptoms develop. “The rabies virus is found in the saliva and nerve tissue of infected animals. It is transmitted to humans and animals through the saliva that accompanies a bite from infected animals. Its symptoms may occur as early as one week and as late as several years after contact with infected animals. Once symptoms of the disease develop, rabies becomes fatal to both humans and animals and they need to seek treatment im-

mediately,” warned Letswalo. Letswalo further said Mopani District is known to be a rabies endemic area. The major prevention strategy to contain rabies outbreak, is their annual vaccination campaign. “Between 12 and 14 April we were vaccinating animals in the farming community in Magoebaskloof and we are currently vaccinating animals in the Bolobedu area. On Monday we were at Xihoko village,” she said. For safety reasons people need to make sure that their dogs and cats are vaccinated regularly and not allow pets to roam the streets. She concluded by saying the symptoms of rabies are headache and fever, irritability, restlessness and anxiety, muscle pains, malaise and hydrophobia, vomiting, a hoarse voice, paralysis, mental disorder, profuse salivation and difficult swallowing. — Phidelia Rikhotso phidelia@bulletin.us.com

Young siblings need help after fire A fire which destroyed a home has left a pair of siblings destitute in a small village between Tzaneen and Giyani. It is still not clear what started the fire, but Luceth Mashibye (26) and her younger brother, Jabulani (23) literally lost everything. “We were visiting neighbours when we noticed the smoke bellowing out from our hut house,” recalled Luceth. “We ran to investigate, but when we reached the house the flames were already leaking through the roof so we retreated. We stood helpless and watched as everything we owned was consumed by the flames.” This tragedy follows shortly after the death of Luceth’s 15-month-old daughter who

succumbed to an illness less than two weeks before the fire. The Mashibye’s are now homeless and desperately in need of donations which include the basic essentials such as food, clothing and building material. Through the help of the community and neighbours they have managed to secure a place to stay temporarily. The ward councillor for the area, Mr Africa Mthombeni, paid a visit to the family and expressed his shock at what happened. “The family is living a nightmare and needs support from community members, authorities and local businesses to kick-start their lives,” he said. —Phidelia Rikhotso phidelia@bulletin.us.com

Agriculture will bounce back, says Bank

The weakness of the Rand is seen as the main culprit in why South Africa has failed to capitalise on the slowdown of global agricultural commodity prices. Imports were to fill the gap during times of domestic supply deficits, but agricultural imports became too expensive due to the weakening of the Rand, says Mr Paul Makube, senior agricultural economist at FNB. “Crude oil prices reached re-

cord lows, making it cheaper to transport agricultural commodities globally, but SA could still not benefit from this decline.” However, he said agriculture is heading for a good season as the expected La Nina weather pattern normally leads to above average rainfall in the Southern African region. Agricultural production is expected to bounce back in 2017, with significant moderation in food prices and grains.

We look back at the past twelve years... Today we take a short break in our weekly presentation of the news highlights over the past twelve years, to get the dates of 2004 to synchronise with 2016’s dates. And we take the opportunity to show an architect’s impression of the state-of-the-art new high performance centre at Stanford Lake College in Magoebaskloof — which was inaugurated on Saturday. Next week we will show more of the classy event.

The romantic and blissfully peaceful and happy location of Stanford Lake College, where the new centre was officially opened on Saturday, serves to remind us of the beautiful countryside where we are privileged to live.

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church We all suffer from some disease or the other. It may be physical or mental, or a combination of both. So how do we overcome these disabilities? We visit doctors and medical experts and there is a constant search for a cure. Sometimes we are fortunate and are healed, at other times certain healing procedures lead to further complications.

I think that one of the worst diseases is the degeneration of one’s body. Now I know that there are diseases that seem far worse than this, HIV/AIDS, Cancer, T.B. etc. but these diseases also cause degeneration, one’s immune system can often not cope with all the drugs and treatments. It is not only our immune system that suffers but our faith. Will I ever get better? When faith goes out the window, it leads to mental fatigue and worry. We often think of what will happen to our families and friends if we are not cured. Often we start to blame God for all our woes and become despondent with the fact that God seems to be so distant and not caring for us. Yet, He is constantly there. It is our faith that is “not there” as I have said because of our pain we seem to start to lose our faith, or rather our faith takes a back seat. God’s promises to us are true and He always keeps His promise. When things go wrong and scientific medicine does not seem to work we often look for an alternative source, visiting herbalists and even witch doctors. Always seeking out for cures and we often believe that these cures actually work, in some cases they might but in other cases things can get worse. It is all about trust, do we trust the doctors or faith healers or are we just putting false hope into a lost cause? Our one hope that never fails is our trust in God, or at least we should never not trust God. He is always faithful and just. We need to prayerfully ask God for relief from all that troubles us and firmly believe this will happen. Often it does not happen immediately as we expect, but God hears our every cry out to Him. God is not time bound as we are and what may seem like forever to us may be just a fleeting moment to God. So be patient and trust and believe in God and His mercies. God Bless.

Benewens lewensversekering, korttermynversekering, mediese versekering (of mediese fondse) is daar ook ‘n beleggingsarm.

Old Mutual donates 20 pairs of school shoes Twenty pairs of school shoes were donated to needy pupils of Tinghwazi Primary School in Myakayaka village. The school applied for a donation through Old Mutual in August 2015 and after following all the relevant channels, were able to place smiles on the faces of some of their pupils. Acting principal Mr Mushwana responded by thanking Old Mutual for the wonderful donation that has come at a good time during the onset of winter. “As a school we thank Old Mutual for the donation of the shoes. Parents were asked to look after the shoes, polish and make sure that they are taken care of,” said Mushwana.

Manager Comment The significant volatility seen in 2015 continued into 2016 as the quarter started negatively for risky assets but ended strongly, particularly for emerging markets. The deteriorating global economic outlook placed strain on sentiment towards global equities, as investors favoured bonds. Global Central Banks maintained looser mon-

etary policy during the quarter with the US Federal Reserve opting not to raise interest rates while the ECB added to their monetary stimulus measures. The Bank of Japan followed the ECB in introducing negative interest rates in a further attempt to stimulate inflation while China, whose growth continues to slow, cut the reserve requirements for banks even further. Locally, the SARB raised the repo rate by a further 0.5% to 6.75%, once again citing concerns on rising inflation. February inflation came in at 7%, significantly higher than market expectations and the upper-end of the target band. Local politics remained in the spotlight throughout the quarter as questions of whether President Jacob Zuma would resign affected sentiment. Global developed market equities declined

About the Portfolio Manager

Imraan joined Sanlam Investments in February 2015 as Retail Portfolio Manager within SMMI’s Investment Team. Before joining SI he spent 6 years at Glacier, starting in client services, where he acquired an understanding of the Financial Advisor market. 0.9% for the quarter while emerging markets rose 5.4%, both in dollars. Global bonds and property performed well, returning 5.9% and 5.5% in dollars. Returns in local currency were, however, diminished as the rand rebounded in the first quarter following a tough finish to 2015, ending 5.3% stronger against the US dollar. The local All Share Index rose 3.9% over the quarter, driven mostly by the resources sector. Resources, particularly gold mining companies, rallied strongly throughout the quarter returning 13.2% on the back of stronger commodity prices. Industrials lagged, declining 0.7% while financials recovered some of December’s losses returning 5.4% over the quarter. Yielding assets had a particularly good quarter, bouncing back strongly with local property

underlying unit trusts, and quoted gross of wrap fund fees. Performance quoted pre-tax. Benchmarks returns for CPI are estimated at report date.

and bonds returning 10.1% and 6.6% respectively. In light of this, those managers who have been fully invested offshore, avoided resources and kept duration low in their fixed income exposure typically struggled during the quarter. Value as a style rebounded strongly as parts of the market which have come under pressure in 2015 pulled back. Funds with high exposure to local property also added to returns. This quarter once again illustrated the unpredictability of current markets. We therefore continue to mphasise the importance of diversification within the portfolio through the use of managers with complementary skills and style exposures. As market uncertainty continues one would expect volatility to remain a key feature in 2016.

Beware of shooting in town “I just cried and cried. I couldn’t eat my Sunday lunch until 24 hours later.” Ms Alida Liversage of Eco Choice relives her ordeal.

She and her husband Sampie moved into the Yamorna area outside Tzaneen a month ago. They were watching a movie at about 14:30 when the peace was shattered by a gunshot, louder than a .22. Another two followed in quick succession. Alida says, “We have three big dogs and a small one. They went ballistic. I was terrified. Sampie

went out onto the road to check and made the horrifying discovery. A male vervet monkey had been shot off the telephone wires and lay paralysed and bleeding profusely next to a palm tree. “ “Sampie phoned Northern Security who in turn phoned Dave du Toit from the Vervet Monkey Foundation. They were there within twenty minutes. I’ve never seen such kindness and compassion ever and I couldn’t stop crying.” One of the shots also took out the Telkom line. A technician arrived promptly to repair it. Dave and his wife Josie rushed the vervet to the emergency vet in Tzaneen. Josie says, “He was biting the blanket and writhing in excruciating agony. The vet sedated him to take x-rays but the injuries were too severe and he was PTS.” Yamorna is in a built-up area and shooting is prohibited. —Sue Ettmayr sue@bulletin.us.com

Perdesport groei hand oor hand Scan this QR code or visit www. bulletin.us.com to view video and more photos of the event.

Tzaneen showcase a regal Lifestyle

1-3 years: Little Missy Tzaneen Lifestyle Winner - Ane Fichardt, 1st Princess - Alore Rautenbach, 2nd Princess - Khanani Mabunda

Crowns, smiles and applause echoed through the walkways of the Tzaneen Lifestyle centre this past weekend, as Katryn Barwise and her entourage of beauties lined up for the annual Miss Tzaneen Lifestyle pageant. The pageant formed part of the family day held in the shopping centre on Saturday. Just under thirty young hopefuls entered the pageant in the hopes of representing the Tzaneen Lifestyle centre as their chosen queen. The age groups were varied and started from the young toddlers all the way to category 16-24 years. The crowds gathered around the mini-catwalk and were thrilled with some quirky comments by the young beauties as their applause signalled the success of a well organized event. “It was such a privilege to see the number of beautiful young women we have in our community; it makes me positive to see that these are the next generation of businesswomen who will take Tzaneen forward,” said one excited

audience member. As the adage goes however, there can only ever be one title holder and although every contestant was a winner in their own right, it was Sumari Erasmus who was crowned as the 2016 Miss Tzaneen Lifestyle. The delightful Charline Colbourn was named First Princess while Mitchell Dipela took the sash as second princess. 16-24 years: Miss Tzaneen Lifestyle Winner - Sumari Erasmus, 1st Princess - Charline Colbourn, For her first duty as 2nd Princess - Relebogile Kgasi Miss Tzaneen Lifestyle, Sumari, handed over blankets to warm the winter chill for children in need. The blankets were collected from all the models who entered the competition and who had to donate a blanket to a needy child as a prerequisite for their entry into the pageant. — Joe Dreyer

Tzaneen Eco Club 27 May

Churches

The Tzaneen Eco Club invites you to attend an introduction to the wonderful world of BioMAPping and the Virtual Museum. During an evening presentation on Friday 27 May, the delightful and dynamic Megan Loftie- Eaton, from the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town, will talk about the power of citizen science and how people can make their photos count for conservation. On 28 May time will be spent with her in the lovely Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve (recognised as one of SA’s great biodiversity hotspots) and have fun putting it into practice. Megan was born in Polokwane and grew up in Stellenbosch. She moved with her family to Canada, where she completed a BSc in Environmental and Conservation Sciences. They moved back to South Africa in 2011 and Megan started her MSc in Zoology at the University of Cape Town. Her research was on the geographic range dynamics of SA’s bird species. In 2014 she began her PhD, looking at the impacts of bush encroachment on bird distribution and biodiversity in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. She is the project coordinator of the Atlas of African Lepidoptera (LepiMAP), a project aimed at determining the distribution and conservation priorities of butterflies and moths on the African continent. She is also a BirdMAP Assistant; helping with the ADU’s bird atlas project in other African countries including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, Rwanda, Kenya and Nigeria. The talk will be held at 18:30 on 27 May at the Macadamia Community Hall. Tea and coffee will AGS van SA Duiwelskloof Zwaririrylaan, Modjadjiskloof: 015 309 9275. Tasty paste to be processed in Modjadjiskloof It was all joy and relief when a new tomato processing plant of R100 million was launched in Modjadjiskloof by the minister of trade and industries, Dr Rob Davies, envisaging more than 300 jobs for the local community in Modjadjiskloof before the end of this year. The new factory is on the site previously operated by Tiger Brands in Simon Street and is already in production. At this stage 75 people are employed, which is expected to grow to 200 in the next two months and expand to more than 300 towards the end of the year. The owners are Dursot and All Joy Food Processors, one of the leaders in agro-processing in the country. Davies reiterated that agro-processing is a vital sector in realising value added growth and supporting labour-intensive sectors in the economy. He added that the company has an opportunity to create many more jobs in agriculture and higher value crops on farms delivering to the factory.

Mr Marci Pather, business development director of All Joy Foods, said 15 000 tons of tomatoes will be sourced from fourteen emerging farmers, creating much needed jobs. The owner of Dursots, Mr Ismael Darsot, said in a short interview the plant will operate in three stages. Sunday is that time of the year again and a number of Tzaneen Marathon Club members are on their way to the annual Comrades Marathon. The general manager of Norjax, Mr Hennie Kleynhans, said they received a full study report on the issue from the department of agriculture a week ago, which cost the department R150 000 to complete. Before the report could be discussed the new development was launched by a different government department. “I wasn’t even allowed to attend the launch on Monday,” a concerned Kleynhans said. —Louis Roux louis@bulletin.us.com

Suidskool too strong for Larries As the local schools rugby season edges toward its climatic conclusion, Tzaneen Primary’s first team suffered a nail biting defeat at the hands of the mighty Suidskool in a league game last week. Tzaneen’s captain, the towering Rea Modiba, led his team through halftime with only a three point deficit to chase, as Suidskool opened their tally early with a magnificent try and conversion moments before the whistle. The second half saw the locals fight back with an adjusted strategy seemingly focussing more on their massive loose forwards, as they bulldozed relentlessly towards the Suidskool line. The break through finally came after a penalty was awarded to Tzaneen and skipper Modiba was sent crashing over right under the poles. A simple conversion followed and Tzaneen was back

Hulle speel more (Saterdag) reeds saam in vriendskaplike wedstryde

in the game. Suidskool upped their attack and minutes before fulltime came steaming through with a converted try, to take the game 27-20. “We could have done better, but that’s the nature of the game. They were a better team on the day and we will try harder when we meet again. The boys played well and we are very proud of them,” said Ula Schoeman of Tzaneen Primary. The rest of the teams played well with the u.9 boys ending their match in a 17 all draw, while the u.10 team scored a 29-0 victory. The u.11 boys also drew their match on 12 all and the third and second teams each recorded a victory with 39-5 and 37-10 respectively. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

ADMIN & COUNSELLING SUPPORT OFFICER (LIMPOPO - reference ICSEX1-A)

Tzaneen Primary’s captain, Rea Modiba, charges towards the goal line in their match against Suidskool.

Tzaneen trump Unicorn on the courts The netball teams of Tzaneen Primary School paid a visit to their neighbours, Unicorn Primary for a league clash. The first team girls were on fire on court A amid support from their fans, friends and family who crowded the tiny court to cheer them on. Tzaneen seemed to take control of the match halfway through the first half with their goal, Lizané van Schalkwyk, capitalizing on the strong attack led by energetic winger Rachel de Jager and the ever-pres-

ent centre, Elsjé Kriel. With a five point lead going into the second half, Tzaneen had their work cut out for them as Unicorn fought back hard, scoring three goals in just under two minutes as they attempted to regain control of the match. It was, however, the steady hand of Van Schalkwyk that pushed the final goal through to seal the fate of the hosts and end the match convincingly. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Tzaneen marathon athletes to participate in Comrades 2016

Athletes of the Tzaneen Marathon Club are again this year going to participate in the 91st Comrades Marathon on Sunday. This year the race is a down run, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, a distance of 89,2 km. The race

Die Tzaneen-span vir Sondag se Comrades is (voor): Erika MacConnell, Zelda Katzke, Stephen Madiya, Daleen Venter, Sipho Seabela, Anél Swart en Martie Rudder. starts at 05:30 and a time of 12 hours is allowed for the participants to finish the race. The Tzaneen club has 31 members that will take part in this gruelling race, of which four will aim to finish their 1st Comrades. To take part in this race, begs for a lot of preparation from each and every participant. Members of the club had to run between 1 000 km and 2 000 km, or even more, from the beginning of the year in preparation for the race. To qualify for the race, a standard marathon (42,2 km) must be completed in less than five hours in the months preceding the race. • We wish all the participants the best of luck for the day, and hope each athlete’s dreams will come true. Run the “Ultimate Human Race” with grace and enjoy your day on the road. Izokuthoba: It will humble you!

Ex-Plasie excels in London to Paris Cycle Challenge Tarryn Awbry (néé Pheiffer) from Tzaneen who now lives in the UK, was chosen to take part in the London to Paris Cycle Challenge in aid of Cure Leukaemia. The race covered a distance of 500 km over four days. Brooks Macdonald, the company Tarryn works for, raised over £50,000 for Cure Leukaemia, a massive accomplishment in itself.

into everything she takes on, with a positive attitude and a smile on her face. She scooped up two awards on the evening of the celebratory dinner in Paris on Sunday, bagging the Fastest Woman award in both the Time Trial category and the Timed Hill Climb category, with an overall position of 13th out of 250 riders. Tarryn would like to reach her target of £1 500 raised funds for Cure Leukaemia, and donations can be made until 8 August. If anyone would like to donate to this cause, please visit her JustGiving page that can be found on the link: https://www.justgiving. com/Tarryn-Awbrey.

Sies! Julle behoort julle te skaam! “A quota is always something artificial that can only last for a certain period of time.” — Jacques Santer
