Rugby fight raises serious questions

A primary school rugby match was tainted by a barbaric assault on a 12-year-old boy on Tuesday. The attack happened when a Tzaneen Primary player was viciously beaten unconscious by a player from the opposing Louis Trichardt Primary during their league game, in full view of spectators and coaching staff. The incident has brought rugby at primary school level under the spotlight once again. My journey back to the future of African farming BY: Olusegun Obasanjo Former President of Nigeria

Every year, thousands of young Africans join an exodus from their families’ small, often struggling farms in the countryside. make off with any cables, but instead caused severe damage when they cut through the cable. No arrests were made as the suspects fled the scene before security personnel and SAPS arrived. Investigations are currently ongoing. In related news, the Criminal Matters Amendment Act came into force this week, which escalated cable theft from its status as a petty crime, to a serious criminal offense that could carry a hefty prison sentence. The amendment comes at a crucial time as theft of cables place a heavy financial burden on municipalities nationwide. In a recent report in national media, it was estimated that cable theft costs Eskom, Telkom and Transnet in the region of R2-billion annually. Under the new act, criminals could face up to thirty years in prison and corporations found guilty of colluding with cable thieves may be slapped with fines of up to R100 000. GLM approves R350m budget

Black-out in Tzn after cable theft Tzaneen suffered at the hands of would-be cable thieves this week with households left in the dark in the early hours of Monday. According to reports, the town experienced a total blackout for a few hours at the start of the week when power cables were cut at two separate sites. According to the GTM’s Electrical Department, criminals attempted to steal cables at an empty substation on the corner of Geelhout and Essenhout streets. The substation is designated for future use by the municipality and the power cable the would-be thieves attempted to steal was a 185 11kV cable. Although the suspects failed in their attempt to steal the cable, they caused significant damage which led to a six hour repair job by the GTM. I It was later also discovered that on the same evening another section of cable was cut at three different places in Annecke Street, near the site of the new prison. Here too, the criminals failed to

School rugby fight raises serious questions A 12-year-old boy is recovering at home from concussion and other injuries following a beating he received during a primary schools rugby match in Tzaneen on Tuesday. Tzaneen Primary played host to Louis Trichardt Primary in a league match. It was during the first team game on Tuesday afternoon that HJ van der Nest, a flanker for Tzaneen Primary, was brutally assaulted by a prop from the opposing team. Spectators watched in horror as the boy was first throttled, then flung to the ground and then repeatedly punched on hid head

and in the face while he lay unconscious on the pitch. The referee, Mr Jacques Rossouw, did not immediately stop the game as he claims not to have been aware of the incident. The assault was finally ended when Mr Hannes Kleynhans, Tzaneen Primary’s team manager, ran onto the field and pulled the much bigger player away from the now unconscious Van der Nest. Paramedics rushed to the youngster’s aid while his teammates looked on in shock. The offending player was sent off the field and red carded which resulted in an argument amongst the coaches and various spectators of the two teams. Shockingly, not because of what happened, but because the offending player was sent off the field and Louis Trichardt Primary had no substitute for his position. The injured boy was taken off the field and the game continued. Bulletin spoke to Mr Willem van der Nest, the victim’s father, the following day at Mediclinic Tzaneen where he was awaiting the results of his son’s brain scan. Van der Nest sr, a former Craven Week rugby player in his day, was not at the game as he works in Mokopane, where he manages the Zebediela Bricks plant. “It was the first game of this season that I missed, but my wife was there and it was very traumatizing for her. Behaviour such as this is unacceptable and my son was really hurt. I was so upset that I considered laying an assault charge,” he said. “Where has the sport gone? In my opinion that child should be banned from playing any sport as he obviously has a very serious anger problem. We are not happy at all and if the necessary correctional steps are not taken by the schools, we will take legal action.”

The results of the scans found that HJ had suffered concussion and some bruising on his head and face. He has been booked off school until he has fully recovered. Deputy headmaster and head of sport at Tzaneen Primary, Mr Willes Steenkamp, said the incident has been reported to the chairman of Limpopo Primary Schools Rugby Association, Mr Gustav Grobler, as well as the Blue Bulls Rugby Union. He added that the referee and linesman on the day have submitted their official reports to the chairman of the Limpopo Primary Referees Association, Mr Loukie Pretorious, for further investigations. “We will no longer allow this type of behaviour at any of the matches that Tzaneen Primary is involved in, either as hosts or as visitors to other schools. “Nobody will be allowed next to the field during games except for the two coaches of the respective teams,” said Steenkamp. “Should we find that the conditions at the game are not satisfactory, we will not permit our players onto the field.” Tzaneen Primary’s headmaster, Mr Vic Rijnen, confirmed Steenkamp’s statements and added that the school does not condone behaviour such as this. At the time of going to print we were unable to reach the headmaster of Louis Trichardt Primary School. We do, however, have information that the school has submitted their Boksmart teamsheet for scrutiny and that the offending player appeared before a disciplinary committee. It is alleged that he will also receive compulsory psychiatric evaluation from the school councillor and receive anger management therapy. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

We look back at the past twelve years...

Daar was helpers, daar was borge, daar was besoekers uit alle oorde.

30% was oor dinge waaraan ek absoluut niks kon doen of verander nie. 8% is oor werklike probleme. Watter raad is daar?

I also wish to take the opportunity to thank visitors from the English and other language communities. As the Lord Jesus teaches us to be friendly towards all mankind, I trust that you have experienced warmth and friendliness together with tasty food and good company. Until then may the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord smile when He thinks of you, may the Lord be graceful unto you and give you peace. Amen.

Drugs help them forget

Residents in Tzaneen are witnessing an alarming increase in the number of street children as well as young men who are addicted to drugs — mainly cheap stuff such as glue that they inhale, to take them on a “trip”. The Bulletin investigated the current situation and spoke to a number of the so-called street sleepers. One of the homeless people who has been wondering around Tzaneen for more than fifteen years said that he has been walking the streets all these years, and in order for him to survive he has to use drugs (glue) because it helps him forget all the pain and everything around him. “It keeps me energised when I am hustling and trying to figure out where I am going to get my next meal. I eat whatever I can get and I sometimes buy bread or pick up whatever I can find in the dustbins”. Most of the drug addicts sleep on pavements and go without food, water or anything that could give them energy. This makes them to find solace in glue that they

openly inhale. These young men get their daily fix for as little as R20, while most of them walk around town looking for scrap metal and plastic bottles to sell. He told us that “for us (the homeless) the streets become an easier option when we run away from home”. Since the number of homeless kids is on the increase it is said that the government should take a drastic decision to remove these drug-addicted youths off the streets, and ensure that they

are taken care off — while at the same time tracking down their families. “The number of children running away from home is increasing daily,” our informant told us. A concerned hawker added to the debate by saying, “these young men steal from us, knowing that there’s nothing we can do. There’s this certain young man who used to come and ask for cigarettes. I would then give him one or two but he kept coming for more. I later decided to stop giving him smokes, and now he just takes without my permission whenever he spots an opportunity”. Concerned residents of the town is said to be very worried about the increase in numbers of the street kids. People wonder who will take the next (bold) step to have these kids helped and rehabilitated. Another challenge is to reunite these kids with their families. — Gittel Baloyi gittel@bulletin.us.com

Hollow secret

Local Government and could bring thousands of tourists to our area the news that matters A grand entrance to the world of tourism awaits Modjadjiskloof with the announcement and revealing of a secret cave, housing an enormous amount of historical evidence about the ancestors of the famous Rain Queen and her followers. Known as the Manokwe Caves, it served as a safe haven for the Modjadji folks over centuries against larger attacking tribes and other dangers. The caves were said to be big enough to harness a village of people and their livestock for weeks, avoiding the unsuspecting enemy. A feasibility study on the development of the cages for tourism was completed recently at a cost of R400 000 and presented to the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) by the Sustainable Tourism Institute of SA. Money was made available on the budget for the new financial year, to spend on the project. When fully developed, it could become one of the biggest draw cards in Limpopo for tourists worldwide. It may even become more popular than the existing cave spots such as the Cango Caves in the Little Karoo or the Sterkfontein Caves near Krugersdorp. The caves are in Malematja village and R1,6 million was allocated for the next financial year for the development of small infrastructure like the main entrance, toilets, fencing and a guard room. In the following year excavations will be done, although the development will be slow due to the lack of funds, said Ms Lovers Maenetje, spokesperson for the GLM. At this stage only two major cave sites are open to the public in Limpopo. They are the Makapan Caves near Mokopane and the Echo Caves west from the Strydom Tunnel in the east.

The Manokwe Caves is said to be about between seven and eight kilometres long, housing several large chambers and remnants of human activity from previous centuries. According to tradition ancestors of the Modjadji tribe fled from areas further north of Limpopo in the 17th century to settle in the hills of the kloof area and had access to land between Polokwane and Hoedspruit. It all started in the 17th century when Dzugundini, the daughter of Chief Monomotapa in Zimbabwe, fell pregnant by his son and had to flee southwards because of the scandal. She and her following settled in the Molototsi valley of the Balobedu kingdom. A baby was born and named Modjadji (ruler of the day), the Rain Queen. Since then five rain queens have reigned in the region, with the sixth now eleven years old and being educated in Johannesburg before she will be introduced to the regency in Modjadjiskloof. The Modjadji Royal Family has been declared an official kingdom by the SA government this year, making it one of ten kingdoms recognised by the state in the country. Very little is known about the caves, its size and hidden secrets. Well-known historian Prof Louis Changuion (of Haenertsburg) said he has heard of the caves, but still awaits more information on its history. A resident of Modjadjiskloof, Mr Pieter van Niekerk, said the caves could be part of a range of caves above the area where the Modjadji Royal Family reigns. As an ex-councillor of the GLM he regards the development of the caves as a major contributor to tourism in Modjadjiskloof in the future. — Louis Roux

Local elections are around the corner, and Bulletin continues to address issues affecting the residents of the municipalities in our area Bulletin’s team is working on the following issues that are certain to cause repercussions. On most of these issues we were waiting for information which we obtained too late for publication today. We thus recommend that you make sure to get next week’s edition (if you have any nerves left to digest more shocking news).

• More alarming information about Tzaneen’s electricity problems and the “dark” future waiting on residents; • Details about Mopani District Municipality’s budget for 2016/2017; • Something smells regarding the GTM’s outdoor advertising policy; and the municipality’s inexplicable lack of updated (valid) by-laws; • How come that one of the MDM’s prestige buildings are leaking like sand running through a screen?; • What is happening at Lepelle North Water who is supposed to protect our water resources and ensure that we enjoy constant supply?

After 31 years this cop is still dedicated Tzaneen Police Cluster spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe looks back on his 31 years of selfless commitment by sharing some of the interesting cases he has encountered in his career. It all started in 1985 when he joined the then SAP. Since then he has moved up through the ranks until he was appointed official spokesperson nineteen years ago. He spoke to Bulletin about his career and how he has enjoyed his time in the SAP and since 1994 in the SAPS. “I have always had a passion to serve and protect the vulnerable groups of society, such as children and the elderly,” Ngoepe said. He explained that before he became a police officer he had tried his hand at different jobs but he

just could not cope. “I found my niche being a police officer and wearing my uniform and serving the community is what I live for,” he said. Ngoepe pointed out at that commitment, dedication and discipline as well as maintaining a balance between work and home as what helped him to keep a clean record. He has been in the environment of media communications as the SAPS spokesperson for the past nineteen years. “Being a spokesperson is being in the most critical environment, but it is simple because it just needs honesty. “One must ensure that the information you give to media practitioners is correct at all times and if you’re not sure about what they need to know, you

simply ask them to call you later while you investigate. “Journalist are the public’s mouthpiece and ears, therefore they need to obtain and be given the correct information.” In a career that has spanned 31 years, Ngoepe shared some of his most interesting cases. The one case that stood out for him was what happened after an incident at Ga-Motupa. A case of culpable homicide had to be investigated, after a man had been knocked over by a car and landed under a bridge. “As a successful case begins at the crime scene, I went to the bridge to start investigating. I found out that what I was told didn’t make sense. When I went down the river I saw droplets of blood which lead to a grassy area. This

area was opposite a house belonging to the deceased. When I searched the house it was absolutely spotless, but I happened to see a spot under one bed. “To my surprise I found an axe with traces of blood. The axe had been used to kill the man. The drops of blood at the bridge matched the blood found on the axe. At the end the man’s wife and her brother were arrested for murder and sentenced.” Ngoepe also pointed out that police officers’ lives are always in danger. Criminals target the pistols and other firearms that Police carry. “One of the most difficult tasks is to go to the home of a fallen officer, to break the news of the death to the family,” he said. — Phidelia Rikhotso phidelia@bulletin.us.com

Holy Family Centre receives generous donation A much-needed donation from Mindshare South Africa and Passion Power was received by the Holy Family Care Centre at Ofcolaco. The donation of R20 000 in cash, a wheelchair, desks, clothing, toiletries, toys, educational material, vegetables and seeds was reportedly made possible by Mindshare South Africa, Willow Creek Community Church, Boulevard Cycles and a local farmer, Ms Linda Nghatsane on behalf of Passion Power, a motorcycle group originally from Tzaneen. According to Mr Ndhambi Machimana of Passion Power, known in the riding world as “Switch”, Passion Power has been on a drive to raise donations for the Holy Family Care Centre in the past two months. “We give thanks to the business community and friends who assisted in pulling these together.” Another member of Passion Power, Mr Tiyani Rikhotso, known as “Air”, explained that Holy Family Care Centre is their first stop. Later this year they will be selecting another chosen charity as their goals are closely

for seventy children (39 boys and 31 girls). A Mindshare South Africa representative and Passion Power members spent the day helping and playing with the children at the centre and made a braai for lunch for the kids. The kids were also treated with the singing sounds of bikes. aligned with keeping more than hope alive. Sr Sally Duigan of the Holy Family Care Centre said they were very thankful for the donation. They completely rely on a government subsidy, which is not enough to provide for all their efforts. The centre — administered by an international community of sisters from the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart — was specifically established to provide holistic

support for the needs of the sick and vulnerable, especially orphaned children from all over Limpopo. Holy Family Care Centre currently caters

Gardening project thrives The extreme weather conditions which recently hit the country resulted in great losses in the farming community, but did not have a great impact on the Mmathakana family gardening project Lenyenye. So says project manager, Mr George Ramodike. “They say that without water, there can be no crops. And without crops, there can be no income, but in our case we have been surviving,” Ramodike said. The garden has harvested fresh pumpkins which were planted during the drought earlier this year. “There is nothing impossible if one has determination,” said Ramodike. He added that they have been producing and supplying their valued customers with fresh vegetables since August 2015. The Gardening project aims to improve food security and diets of the most vulnerable. Ramodike told the Bulletin that since they started their family gardening project,

One of extended family of potters now teaches in Tzn One can feel the positive creative energy as one steps into Ms Leigh Hoets’s sunny pottery studio on the family Hamawasha farm. Once the students arrive it’s plain to see why they love their pottery classes. The students come from Polokwane, Balule conservancy outside Hoedspruit, Gravelotte and further afield. Ms Hoets (38) is extremely talented, patient and caring and she also has pottery in her genes. Her late grandmother, Ms Dillys Hoets, was a potter and taught all her children the art of pottery. Her son Mr Garth Hoets, who lives near Pietermaritzburg in KZN, is well known for his decorative pottery. Her other son, Mr Digby Hoets, who lives in Midrand, is famous for his huge pots. Leigh’s cousin Ms Harriet Hoets does pottery

in Cape Town. Leigh’s father taught pottery in Mieliekloof but then turned to farming. Leigh attended Unicorn Preparatory School and then Capricorn High. She dabbled in photography in Port Elizabeth, became a diving instructor and then started travelling abroad and stayed in the UK for thirteen years. She returned to South Africa to take up her passion for pottery. Leigh went to one of the

aunts in Cape Town, also a potter, and studied under her for six months. When she returned to Tzaneen her father helped her build the pottery studio on his farm. Long time potter, Ms Karin Boyum from Haenertsburg, gifted her with an electric kiln and other useful tools. Ms Boyum had taught ceramics at the University of the Witwatersrand before moving to Limpopo. Kilns can cost anything from R 30,000 upwards. Leigh built the Raku kiln outside. This Japanese type of firing causes a crackled effect. Raku produces decorative works of art not suitable for dishwashers as it’s very porous. Leigh prefers hand pinching work to the wheel. Her immediate goal is to hold

One of Komkor’s most trusted suppliers of quality wood materials is PG Bison. This past week, representatives from the national supplier paid a visit to the Komkor premises where they treated some of the local ‘woodsmiths’ and kitchen cupboard installers to a demonstration and training on a range of new products,

The presentation and training was free to all interested parties and was accompanied by some light snacks and the opportunity for the various industry role players to network. “Giving back to the community is part of what makes Komkor such a valued name in this business,” said one attendee.

Strongman takes gold George Young , the manager and trainer at Merensky High School’s gymnasium, participated in the finals of the Arnold Classic Africa (a multi sport festival and expo, with patron Arnold Schwarzenegger) in Johannesburg. He competed in the men’s physique junior category. He did not make it into the top six this year, but “I know the

work I have to put in and I will be taking the gold next year.” It was a great privilege for him to meet some of his role models, like Dexter Jackson (who won the professional bodybuilding category last year). Young also took part in a strict arm curl competition, where he took the gold medal in the junior category. For him, this was an experience of a lifetime.

Merensky 7’s rugby player in USA Ex Plasie MJ Mulder has been selected to represent the All Stars Invitational 7’s rugby side that will tour to Dallas, Texas (USA) in July. This is certainly a great opportunity and privilege for him. The team will play in the Dallas Quins u.19 international 7’s tournament and will be competing against other international teams from America, Mexico, Australia, Georgia, the Caiman Islands, Poland etc. The tournament will be broadcasted on SuperSport. Mulder is seen here (during the Merensky Rhino 7’s season) with team mate Mikyle le Roux.

Vossie presteer in internasionale atletiekbyeenkoms…

Zanis Gymnastics go for gold

Zanis excelled at the recent SAGF Level 1-3 Club Team & Individual Competition, where fifteen of Zanis Tzaneen’s rhythmic gymnasts competed. It was an incredible experience for all Zanis gymnasts competing at Wits University. Zanis Gymnastics Academy Tzaneen entered five teams for the Team Competition and won four team trophies, eleven gold medals and four silver medals! • See page 15 for full results.

Wildcard upset for Polokwane The two month-long 2016 Smirnoff 1818 Raga Bolo street soccer tournament finally came to a head the past weekend in Polokwane, when teams from Mbombela and Sheshego met for the regional finals. The event was a grand affair at The Ranch

just outside Polokwane. Four teams, two from Mbombela and two from Polokwane were listed as the headlining games while four “wildcard entries” acted as openers to a day filled with top notch soccer action. The games format was changed slightly for this event and consisted of only one half of ten minutes playing time. After a shocking display by the wildcard teams, Dave Tavern from Mbombela snuck into the semi-finals on the day by winning each of their four opening games and playing to a draw against Polokwane champions, Percy’s Pepsi Wholesalers. Not only did these wildcard underdogs win every one of the matches convincingly after that, but went on to face local runners-up, Mum’s Tavern in

the final play on the day. After a hard fought clash, the game went down to penalties which handed Dave’s Tavern the win.

This means that one team from Polokwane and one team from Mbombela will travel to Gauteng to play for the grand prize of R100 000 against the top two teams from every other province during June.

sese spelers. Dit stuur ‘n baie sterk sein uit dat as jy vir jou land wil speel, jy jou talente plaaslik ten toon moet stel. Duane se ervaring, bewese talent en leierseienskappe is uiters nodig, Flouw in ‘n mindere mate so. “One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes... and the choices we make are ultimately our responsibilty.” — Eleanor Roosevelt
