Pitch black silence
Bulletin was denied access to a meeting between members of the Letaba / Letsitele farming communities and top management of the municipality to discuss a way forward in ending the current power crisis. This important meeting was held yesterday in the chambers of GTM Mayor, Maripe Mangena. It was attended by Mangena, the Municipal Manager, Selomo Monakedi and the acting Electrical chief, Sam Lelope. Exactly why Bulletin editor, Joe Dreyer, was denied attendance remains a mystery, but he was informed by a member of the farming community that he was not welcome as it may negatively influence the outcome. “If you attend this meeting it will be cancelled. We will send you minutes after the fact.” Excluding the media from a public gathering, or any community forum, opens that meeting up for scrutiny and flies directly in the face of the Public Access to Information Act. It also proves that transparency is but a
buzz-word in the halls of local government. The time for talking has come to an end as there is no longer a “looming power crisis” or “an inevitable collapse of the power grid” to warn about – that crisis is here. It has happened and the GTM needs to stand up to their inefficiencies and inform their community of the measures they have in place to counter it. While councillors make promises in meetings that should have been held months ago, farmers continue to bleed money as electricians struggle to keep pack houses, hatcheries, nurseries, saw mills, farms and other agricultural operations online. And the Letsitele areas are not the only ones affected. Patrick Bremner, who owns a small sawmill outside Haenertsburg, said his business is being severely affected by the constant and lengthy power cuts. His factory is not operating, yet he still has to pay 20 employees. Bremner paid Lelope, a visit on Monday. He gave Bremn-
er the assurance that he would sort it out. Power was still not restored to the sawmill and he paid Lelope another visit on Tuesday. Lelope again assured him that he was going to the power station, this time he would visit the station himself to sort it out. This has apparently not yet been done. According to information, only one person allegedly man’s three phones at the GTM call centre. Calls aren’t logged and callers have no idea where they are in the automated complaints queue. Yet the GTM boldly proclaimed that they are rectifying the situation and even urged residents to log their complaints on the 24-hour call centre hotline. What was said during yesterday’s meeting had not been shared with the media at the time of going to print, but word is that the fight is not yet over. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Darkness descended over Christmas Villagers, farmers and guesthouses in the Magoebaskloof/Haenertsburg area were caught with their pants down over Christmas and New Year. The festive season is a busy time with many tourists in the area. Lightning strikes followed by torrential or continuous rains and sometime strong winds caused havoc with the power. The pouring rain, coupled with lengthy power outages, was simply too much for most tourists. Gavin Stanford at Stanford Lodge says his holiday makers cut their holidays short. Sarah Hillary at Cheerio Gardens installed a gennie (generator) to keep the tourists in the cottages happy. She said, “Diesel for the gennie is expensive and we also needed to keep extra diesel on hand.” She made 131 calls to the GTM control centre. Cheerio Gardens was without power for nine days. One farm had no power to warm the baby chicks. Restaurant owners, who were open for Christmas Day, were in a panic. Their three day power outage was only restored in pouring rain at 11:30 on Christmas Day. Mountain Café, the new kid on the block, was badly affected. Gary Barnes at the Pot & Plow is always fully booked for his annual scrumptious traditional Christmas Day lunch. Although
Some alternatives to power.
Gary has a gennie, it was not powerful enough to fire up his ovens as well. Somehow the squire from Peterborough pulled it off. Lekwar Restaurant installed a gennie at the first lengthy outage. The flowers in the cold storage rooms at Kromdraai Blomme went off. Many homes had to throw out fridge and freezer contents. No one could connect to the internet to Skype loved ones over the festive season. Residents reliant on pumps for the water supply couldn’t shower or bath. The 2000 kva transformer at the Magoebaskloof Hotel blew. It can only be replaced next month

(February). The Hotel quickly installed a massive gennie to keep the entire Hotel up and running at all times. The gennie at Food Zone went on the blink. Milk and vegetables went off. The Vodacom tower was hit twice. Subscribers couldn’t communicate for days. Sixty percent of the power outages are due to trees encroaching on the line border which should be cleared 10 meters each side. The GTM is in charge of switching off the power and then responsible for keeping the lines clear. Tall water-logged trees brought lines dangerously down onto the ground. Technicians and electricians were working on the line last week when a tree crashed down, taking out the line and narrowly missing
the workers. Cleaning crews, repair crews and technicians together with community members worked tirelessly to trace, fix and restore power. What are the alternatives? Generators and solar panels are expensive. A house-hunting couple stated that they have budgeted R300, 000 to get their prospective home off the grid. When the power is on, charge all equipment, have a bath or shower and do your machine washing. Make sure battery operated items like radios and solar lights are in good working order. Those that have electric garage doors or gates should regularly check that the back-up batteries are in working order. Keep a stock of candles and matches handy. If you have a fireplace, keep dry wood close by. Save toilet rolls and the ends of spent candles for the fireplace. Buy gas cookers and stainless steel whistling kettles. Buy a back up battery for the laptop. Look at Builder’s Warehouse, Boulevard Cycles, Letaba Gas and Game to name but a few. Sandi Moore from Haenertsburg says, “I have a 200 watt UPS inverter with a very good quality battery. It gives three hours of TV (that’s a 50 inch so pulls lots of watts). I use it weekends for light and charging cellphones and work on my laptop. Then it lasts more than a day. It’s cheaper and quieter than a gennie.” — Sue Ettmayr

Cheetah is hungry no more Cheetah. That’s what the Faurie’s have named him. The stray who scavenged for food in the parking lot of the popular Tzaneen retailer, Sugarloaf, now lives comfortably in the home of Geyer and Erika Faurie. The story went viral over social media when Geyer posted a photograph of a friendly dog at a fuelling station who came running towards him as he stopped in the parking area. “It was so strange,” he said. “I have seen him around here many times before and have on occasion bought him some boerewors, or given him a snack, but he has never come up to me and asked to play before.” Geyer took this as a sign that he had just made a new best friend as the stray was notoriously shy and hardly ever approached humans. Although nobody truly knows where he originates from,
the legend goes that he once lived in one of the homes down King Edward Street. After the owner moved away, he was left to fend for himself and subsequently lived off scraps and whatever he could scavenge from dustbins and alley ways. People spotted him sleeping in the Van Velden hospital grounds on occasion too. It was right there and then that Geyer decided he would come back and find the dog. “At first when I came back to Sugarloaf, he was nowhere to be found and I feared that he may have been killed or removed by the SPCA. I turned to get into my car and suddenly saw him come running out of the shadows!” Geyer picked him up and took him home. “We named him Cheetah because of his colours and his speed. He is such a loving dog and he plays well with the
kids and our existing pets.” After posting his story on Facebook, well-known businessman and owner of the Sugarloaf and Sugarhill enterprises in town, Lino de Carvalho, approached Geyer. De Carvalho offered a helping hand and through Sugarloaf has pledged to sponsor Cheetah with a bag of dog food every month. “Because this is such a touching, community story, I decided to help where I can and providing food for Cheetah seemed to be the ideal way. He had been struggling to find food for so long, I wanted to ensure that never has to happen again.” Cheetah has been adapting well at the Fauries and has even put on a few pounds as testament to his newly acquired good life. “He has been a blessing to us and every day it becomes clearer that Cheetah was sent to us for a reason. Exactly what that reason may be, we don’t know, but it doesn’t matter now, he is safe.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Bridge of hope Residents of Lenynye, Mohlaba Cross and Ramokako, outside Tzaneen, under the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, are overjoyed that finally their grievances are heard. Bulletin, has learned that residents in those areas were finding it very difficult to cross the Mokonyane River that connects Lenyenye township and Ramokako, especially during the rainy season. Concerned residents told Bulletin, that the bridge will help many people from being swept into the river as they try to cross. Criminals took advantage of this area too as they used to hide at the river bank and rob unsuspecting pedestrians. It alleged that a number of rapes were also recorded there. “We are thankful to the municipality for making an effort in building us the bridge. This bridge will make it easy for us to cross the river without any hassles,” said Nancy Shikwanbana a resident of Mohlaba Cross. “During the rainy season it was very difficult to cross. We used to pray in groups before crossing the river. Most of us are working in town so we have to cross the river early in the morning to catch a bus or a taxi. The bridge will make it easier for the busses and taxis to take us to our doorsteps,” said Shikwanbana. Ward 32, Councillor Rosinah Kgatla, told Bulletin that after realising the struggle of the communities, they decided to devise a plan to build a bridge. “During the rainy season some of the school kids were not going to school because of the overflowing river. That

will now be a thing of the past,” she said. “It is time for the thugs to say goodbye to their hiding place. The bridge will serve as security because people will see everything from a distance. That place was totally not save at all. The robberies were so bad that we deployed Community Working Program (CWP), workers to monitor residents and accompany school children,” said Kgatla.

Three nabbed for poaching Two brothers and a Zimbabwean national were arrested just outside Louis Trichardt this weekend. It is suspected that they were involved in a series of poaching incidents reported across the province in recent months. The Limpopo Endangered Species Unit acted on information received about suspects attempting to sell rhino horn in the area. The unit traced the suspects to a spot in Louis Trichardt. When the suspects noticed the officers, they fled and a high-speed chase ensued. During the chase one of the suspects threw a plastic bag out of the vehicle. An officer retrieved the object and it was later discovered to be a rhino horn. The suspects were arrested a short while later by the Lou-
is Trichardt Cluster First Responder team and Public Order Policing units. It is suspected that the recovered rhino horn might be connected to an incident of poaching in the Witpoort area that occurred earlier that week where a rhino and her calf were shot and dehorned. Forensic tests to confirm this will be conducted.
Brothers Deon (48) and Nick van Deventer (51) are South Africans and Onwand Muchagowa (34) a Zimbabwean national. Investiga-
tion into their possible involvement in other reported poaching incidents are currently underway. They appeared in the Louis
Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of possession of a rhino horn and the illegal hunting of endangered species. The case
was postponed for further investigations. — Joe Dreyer

Five drown during floods Five people drowned and another five were rescued in the wake of heavy torrential rains across the province during the first month of the new year. On Friday members of the SAPS Search and Rescue unit in cooperation with the SAPS Air Wing rescued five people, including three young girls between the ages of 6 and 10, from the Limpopo River near the Beit Bridge Border post. It is believed that they attempted to cross the border from Zimbabwe illegally when they became trapped by the rising river. After receiving medical treatment, they were handed over to Home Affairs where further investigations were conducted. Later that week in the same vicinity of the Limpopo River, the bodies of two men were retrieved by SAPS Rescue members. It is believed that the men drowned as they were attempting to cross. A man was rescued on Saturday after he was trapped in a river in the Dennilton area. The man had held onto a tree in the middle of
the river for a few hours before the rescuers reached and liberated him. In Giyani and Mankweng the bodies of three young boys were recovered from ditches which filled up with water after the rains.
It is believed that the boys went swimming and then subsequently drowned. The SAPS have issued a stern warning to communities and par-
ents not to allow their children to play in rivers or ditches which have flooded, and to exercise extreme caution when crossing low-level bridges and streams. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Bring the power back We have reported extensively on the looming (and now very real) collapse of the GTM’s electrical infrastructure. It is a very real crisis and in all likelihood not one that will dissipate anytime soon. The December break was all but festive for the majority of the residents in the Letsitele and Agatha areas as they sat (and still sit) without power in their homes and businesses daily – and at times for days on end. If not being able to supply consumers with the service they paid for could be seen as an achievement, this would have been a feather in the GTM’s cap. Businesses lost (and are still losing) a tremendous amount of money with one national producer threatening imminent job losses if the situation is not rectified soon. The farmers and other big businesses in our area have started looking at the possibility of bypassing the municipality and obtaining power supply direct from Eskom. There have been talks of class action law suits and even charges of misappropriation of funds to be lodged against certain key employees of the GTM. But, to what end? Would it be beneficial to waste precious resources on suing a clearly bankrupt entity? What would we as a community gain through this? The answer is a resounding ‘nothing’. Could Eskom take over the supply of power to these affected areas? Probably not, due to the dilapidated state of the infrastructure. Even if funds suddenly became available to upgrade the power grid, would the money be invested in the right areas if the people meant to manage such a project lacked the knowledge or qualifications to do so correctly? If the failures thus far are anything to go by, then the answer is clearly no. Therein lies the problem. We need to fight for the removal of those who fail in their respective posts and the effective replacements to be appointed to safe guard against these disasters (that is what this has become) and ensure some form of future for generations to come. If we don’t, we risk losing Tzaneen as the bustling little agricultural hub it is, to another footnote in the records of ANC failures. What affects our farmers and business owners, affects our homes directly and we therefore cannot, should not, sit back and watch from a distance. Become involved.

The year in which a pig in France was executed by public hanging for the murder of a child.
Mind-blowing Fact #11 “Rhythm” is the longest English word without a vowel.
I greet you all in the name of Jesus our Saviour. We are already 13 days into the New Year, 2016 has been done and dusted. Looking back we often wonder what we have achieved, in our personal life but also in our spiritual life. Did we grow, or did we just “float”? When I think back it was perhaps, in my case, a year of challenges, both personally as well as spiritually. I was made Youth Chaplain for the whole of our Archdeaconry, a challenge because of my age (68), but with God’s guidance through the Holy Spirit I was accepted by the youth and it was a great experience. Although mistakes were made I feel that I was able to bring about a certain amount of change. The youth need to be guided and challenged all the time and I believe that this is what God wanted of me. So as I look at 2017, I wonder what new challenges lay ahead of me? What is God wanting from me this year? I cannot just sit back and wait, I must step out in faith, seeking opportunities to serve Him. I feel to that this is a year of reconciliation for all out there. It is time to put the past behind us and guided by the Holy Spirit to do things differently, to step out of our comfort zones and meet the challenges head on. I also believe that we are a people of “lists”. We have a list for everything, from grocery shopping to a list of resolutions. However, how close do we stick to these list? Do we check these lists regularly or do we often forget about them? Do we make a list of what we would like to achieve in our spiritual life, or do we just go with the flow? Always hoping that God will step in when we need Him even if we often forget that He is in control of our lives. Will we still continue to blame Him when things do not go as we planned, or will we believe that He has a purpose for every step of our lives? To continue to hold grudges against others is not healthy and we will not grow spiritually. A friend of mine, who was of Portuguese origin, asked me once what a grudge was. I went into a complicated explanation, only to be told by him that it was a place where a Portuguese person parked his car. Now although this might seem frivolous I believe it was his way of saying that having a grudge was frivolous. So we need to build on relationships this year and reconcile with family and friends and more especially build on our relationship and reconciliation with our Heavenly Father. See if you can do something different to boost your faith, step out and you will be surprised. God is a God of miracles and He will grant you the grace to do the impossible. May the peace of God which passes all understanding be with you and your loved one this coming year. Blessings

Three lions poisoned, mutilated Letaba River Lodge once again suffered at the hands of poachers. The popular family destination a few kilometres from Tzaneen is home to the Tzaneen Lion and Predator Park situated within the grounds at the lodge. On Wednesday a group of suspected poachers killed and viciously mutilated three brown lions in their enclosure at the park. Although the exact time of the incident is not clear, it is believed that the poachers gained access to the park by cutting through three fences and sneaking past a state-of-the-art, newly installed alarm system. The suspects then threw poi-

them. It is believed that the lion parts were transported to Phalaborwa from where they are usually smuggled into the Kruger National Park and eventually land in the hands of sangomas in Mozambique. Park owner, André de Lange, believes this to be an inside job. “The manner in which these poachers bypassed our security system without sounding any alarms along with other aspects of this senseless act, leads me to believe that this must have been an inside job. We cannot confirm this, but investigations are currently being conducted.” This is the second time in six months that poachers have targeted De Lange. “Last year on Father’s Day we
caught a group of poachers after they poisoned and mutilated two white lions here at the park. Those poachers provided us with information which proves that these killings are for muti and that the body parts are commissioned from medicine men and sangomas in Mozambique.” At the time of going to print no further information was available, but police investigations are still underway. — Joe Dreyer

The following morning staff at the lodge came across the carcasses and alerted security and SAPS. A blood trail was tracked to determine the suspects’ escape route. According to those findings the poachers walked down the dirt road from the lodge to the R36 where it appears as though a vehicle was waiting for

Big school, baby steps On Wednesday, hundreds of new scholars started their educational career in primary schools across the Greater Tzaneen region. New pupils and parents were welcomed at Unicorn Preparatory school, Laerskool Tzaneen Primary, Wolkberg Academy, Laerskool Duiwelskloof and Dr Annecke Primary. Many of them shared their first-day jitters with Bulletin over social media. Here are some of the photographs we received from our readers and schools respectively, which prove that despite the Limpopo Department of Education’s dismal failures, there are dedicated educators willing to take up the challenge and ensure a brighter future for these young minds. At the time of going to print, the exact number of new first-grade enrolments had not been made available. Bulletin has learnt that some schools had not yet received their textbooks and other material from the Education Department, but that contingency measures had been put in place by the affected schools to prevent any disruptions. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

nale toernooie wen teen ander topgekeurde spelers.
