Poolgate saga: NEW skeletons The newly appointed chief of the Tzaneen municipal swimming complex, Vikramjith “Vicky” Singh (60), was fired from the very same position at a previous municipality in March 2014. This is according to a source who worked in that metro with Singh. The allegations were confirmed by the Daily Dispatch newspaper in East London who conducted intensive investigations into the matter. According to information, Singh was employed at the Joan Harrison swimming complex in the Buffalo City Metro (BCM), in East London. In January of 2014 he was suspended amid allegations of systematic fraud following a raid on his offices the previous year by the Hawks and the BCM municipal Manager, Andile Fani. The raid followed reports to the municipality of financial mismanagement and theft. Two months later, he was sacked after being found guilty of gross misconduct. An earlier investigative article by the Daily Dispatch revealed that Singh owned two beachfront apartments in Elizabeth Court which he bought for R750 000 each in 2011. The BCM also brought forward reports that Singh had instructed a junior official to perform private work at his private property using council tools, vehicle and while on council time. His lawyer at the time had told the media that Singh wanted to make it clear that his dismissal had nothing to do with

fraud or theft and that he was unhappy with the process and outcome of his hearing. Three years later, Singh is now employed by the GTM to manage its very own municipal swimming bath facility. The history of Vikramjith Singh’s dealings with the Hawks was uncovered during the Ebenezer Mile where he shared a seat on a transport bus to the event with a Bulletin journalist. Singh admitted that he worked at the Buffalo City Municipality before relocating to Tzaneen. Bulletin has asked the GTM spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, for comment on how it happened that a man who was fired from a position in another municipality on charges of gross misconduct, was employed by a separate municipality into the very same position he was fired from? We wanted to know whether background checks had been conducted and whether he truly was the best candidate for the position. We also wanted to know what salary Singh was now earning as a level 8 municipal official. We have received no feedback or comment from the GTM on this matter as all correspondence seems to now be blatantly ignored. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The embarrassing withdrawal from the national championships ended a season riddled with LIMSA failings. At the start of this month the organization announced to all the schools in their area that the provincial championships was scheduled for the 3rd of March at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane. A few days before the event, schools were told to make alternative arrangements as the date had been rescheduled to a week later on the 10th of March because they had allegedly forgotten to book the stadium. A few days later the event was moved for a third time, to the 11th of March without rhyme or reason. “The financial implications on our school were tremendous,” said Willes Steenkamp, sporting head at Tzaneen Primary. “Busses needed to be arranged, parents and their children had to plan their weekend around the event and other events which were fixed on our annual calendars months in advance had to be taken into account. Schools Athletics (SASA) official he was told “not to let his white skin give him the impression that he has some form of privilege.” Bulletin contacted the same official who refused to place his name on record and asked him how it was possible that someone could quite simply “forget” to book a venue for a meeting as important as the Provincial Athletics championships. “I don’t have an answer for you,” was the reply, “phone Peter Maluleke (the Chairperson of LIMSA and provincial secretary to SASA) I don’t have time for this nonsense.” We tried to contact Maluleke several times but his phone was engaged. In February, Maluleke promised to have a sit-down meeting with the editor of this publication, which never happened. We have sent him an official enquiry into this matter, and other pertinent issues, which hopefully he will find important enough to respond to. In the meantime, the future of a new generation of Caster Semenyas, Wayde van Niekerks and Akani Simbines seems to be hanging in the balance. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Lushoff attackers wanted money The attack on the Van der Merwe family on a small holding in Lushoff on Tuesday morning was not racially motivated. This is according to Gert van der Merwe, who spoke to Bulletin at Mediclinic Tzaneen yesterday morning where his wife, Christelle (39) is busy recovering from a gunshot wound. Visibly emotional, Gert sat next to his eldest daughter, Nadine (10) as they recalled the events that took place on the morning his wife was shot. He was not at home at the time as the family is in the process of relocating to Standerton where they will join his father and brother on their soy and maize farm. Christelle is an employee of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality and their two daughters are pupils at a local primary school which is why they stayed behind until the end of the school term. At approximately 01:15 that morning six suspects entered their property at Lushoff 22 and attempted to break open the security gate at the front door. When they failed, it is believed that the group first tried to use a bolt cutter on the burglar proofing Gert had installed in front of the living room windows. When that did not work they smashed the two windows and used a pole to break open the bars. The noise alerted Christelle who went to the living room to investigate. According to Van der Merwe one suspect had his firearm drawn and aimed at the corner of the room in anticipation that someone would come investigate the noise at the window. When Christelle peered around the corner he fired a total of five rounds at her head. One of the bullets hit the corner of the wall a few centimetres from her face and ricocheted into the sinus beneath her right eye. Bloodied and in shock, she ran back towards her room and slammed the door

of the ensuite bathroom behind her. Her daughters, Nadine and Kayla (8) locked the bedroom door and hid inside the closet. Christelle alerted her friends, Lindie Pieterse and Karen Liversage who immediately dispatched emergency services and local security companies while their husbands rushed to the Van der Merwe residents. In the meantime the suspects had gained access to the bedroom and broke open the bathroom door. They found the girls inside the closet and hit them with golf clubs demanding they take them to where the safe is. “We have two safes in the house, one walk-in safe and then a smaller mounted safe,” explained Gert. “The police later told me that someone had fed these guys information which said we had R7 million in the house and that is what they were after.” The suspects removed the mounted safe and forced Christelle to open it. Because of the shock of the ordeal she struggled to enter the correct 8-digit combination which aggrevated one of the men who started beating her and demanding she hurry up. “She told them that she could not concentrate while they beat her, so they stopped and she managed to open the safe.” There was only R2000 in the safe and a 9mm CZ pistol. The leader of the group moved towards Kayla and cocked his pistol as he pointed it at her head saying that he will shoot her if they don’t get the money. “My wife told the girls to get on the bed and hide behind her and the guy started viciously beating her. She fought him off as best she could while my eldest daughter shouted at the men to leave their mom alone and leave as they have what they came for.” It was at that moment that Andre Liversage, Stefan Viljoen and Andre le Grange

arrived on the scene and the suspects fled. They made off with the firearm, the cash and Christelle’s cellular phone. The three men had arrived seven minutes after they received the distress messages from Christelle. Andre Liversage carried her through the broken window to Stefan Viljoen’s vehicle. Viljoen rushed her to Mediclinic Tzaneen. Doctors operated on her but could not save her right eye. Mediclinic Tzaneen spokesperson, Marlize Delport, yesterday confirmed that Van der Merwe had been moved out of the ICU into the general ward and that she was recovering well. “Had it not been for the quick response by those three men, you and I would be having a very different conversation today,” said Gert. “It would be very easy for me to hate today, but I don’t, because I understand that this terrible ordeal we are now going through, was not racially motivated. These guys were promised money and that is what they came to claim.” The Van der Merwe family have received counselling to help them work through the trauma. “I would like to extend my utmost gratitude to the SAPS Top officers from Tzaneen and Polokwane who have come to visit us in hospital and for their exceptional work at the scene. There must have been 50 police vehicles at my home that morning. The guys from Letaba Alarms and all the other security firms who were so quick to respond and the staff at Mediclinic have all been amazing to us and for that we are truly thankful.” At the time of going to print Bulletin has learnt that five suspects have already been arrested in connection with the incident and investigations are still continuing. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Donkey abuse uncovered The ability to suffer in silence has made donkeys one of the most abused animals on earth. This gentle beast is docile and trusting. Used to carry cart loads, donkeys are a common sight on Limpopo roads. The abuse in this province consists of poor harnessing, carrying impossibly heavy loads and being beaten. An animal-loving Haenertsburger came across three donkeys and their owner near a Hardware store in Mankweng. The cart, consisting of the back portion of a bakkie, had its wheels stuck in sand. The donkeys’ owner, known only as David, had loaded sand onto his cart probably for brick-making and was offloading the sand to try and free the wheels. All the while he kept beating his donkeys with a crude, handmade knotted whip. The animal lover had warned David six months previously about abusing his animals. This time she stopped to help David free his cart. Then she noticed that the heavy and crudely made yoke, spanning the

two pregnant Jennies with a foal in the middle, was so wrongly positioned that the young donkey was being throttled. The little one was also the only animal of the three able to push. The animal lover took the yoke off the jennies and then noticed the terrible scarring and bleeding open wounds caused by the inappropriate yoke, incessant beating and the crudely made bits. She took a pair of scissors, cut the link

between the two bigger donkeys and contacted the Polokwane SPCA. The donkeys were confiscated and David has 21 days to reclaim his animals.

Swansong of a Stalwart A pillar in the Tzaneen cultural fraternity has come to the end of a 32-year walk at the Ben Vorster Dance Academy. Linda Pienaar, came to Tzaneen in 1985 where she started coaching ballet and other dance forms at the Technical College in King Edward Street up until 2004 when she found her new home in the newly erected Dance Academy on the grounds of Ben Vorster High School. There, she opened up the world of expression through movement to generations of aspiring young girls – often as young as threeyears old. “I have dancers who have been with me for as long as 18 years and who still to this day pay me regular visits at the studio. The seniors who are currently preparing for their Advanced 1 exams, were of the first group of girls who joined me in 2004.

to the Western Cape where she will take some time off from the dancing. “I think that I need some time to recuperate emotionally for a while, you know, just realign myself a little. I have always been a dancer and so to assume that dancing is now suddenly a thing of the past would be absurd to say the least. I think I would like to become involved on the examinations side of the line in the near future.” On leaving her baby behind in the hands of another, Linda was optimistic that the legacy would continue to live through her successor, Lené van Zyl, who shares the same passion and dedication to the art of dancing as herself. Pienaar will be leaving at the end of July. “It is every little girl’s dream to become a ballerina one day. But were it not for the hard work and dedication that was imprinted onto each of us through our teacher, friend and role model, aunty Linda, not one of us would have been able to live our dreams.” — Joe Dreyer

They were in fact my babies,” she said teary-eyed. Through the years, Linda has had a number of champions come out from under her wings including World Champion, Inge van Rensburg, who competed in the World Championship of Performing Arts in Los Angeles at the age of 16 in 2010. “She was named the world champion of ballet during that championship and it was truly one of the crowning moments in my career.” On Saturday evening the Dance Academy held their annual gala evening after which the dancers surprised Linda by calling her to the stage and giving thanks for all her hard work throughout the last decade. It was suddenly clear that these girls saw her as more than just a dance teacher. “That was a very emotional evening for all of us. I often joke and say that I know these girls better than their own parents do. We share more than just dance, we grow together, cry together and celebrate together. To say goodbye to them is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make.” Linda and her husband, Kobus, will be relocating

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church As a young boy, I was able to climb onto my bicycle and ride to my friends place or even just walk down the street to see them. I did not have to phone first or send an SMS, actually we did not have cell phones. Things have changed today, one even has to contact your family to find out if they are home. You can’t just pop in, you have to make an appointment. Yes I know that people are busy and sometimes just don’t want to have visitors at all times. What about friends? Do we still have the freedom to just go and visit them? Often you are the one who is expected to remain in contact with them, they say that communication is a two way street, but does it really happen? One can become very lonely and this often leads to depression. How do we change all this? Perhaps we need to obey God’s command “To Love one another just as He loves us” Our relationship with others is of importance and should at all times be worked upon. However, our relationship with God is of utmost importance. We need to build upon it ever single moment, just the same as we should build on our relationships with others. God’s grace is with us from birth and remains with us forever. Often we do not see the little things that God does for us each day, we expect some sort of great “Damascus experience” before we realise that it was God who was responsible for this happening. We rather put it down to coincidence. Yet how did it happen that we were there at the right time and the right place? The Bible relates of many great things God did for His people. Sceptics say that this can also be put down as coincidences. It all relates to how much faith we have, how strong our faith is, not in the world but in God. When things go wrong in our lives we tend to put it down to fate and often blame God for what happened. The God I know does not work this way, I know that He has a perfect plan for each of us. Yes, people make excuses for their mistakes and their trust in God waivers. They feel that they can handle any situation, getting hurt in the process. They do things that they think can benefit themselves only to be disillusioned. How do you say sorry when your decision has been proven wrong? Trust in God and things will go right, confess your sins to God and to others and your life will change. “Faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love” 1 Cor. 13:13 Blessings.

The Numbers

120

The word hundred is derived from the word “hundrath”, which actually means 120 and not 100.

Mind-blowing Fact #22 Movie trailers were originally shown after the movie, which is why they were called “trailers”.

Bobo visits Tzaneen Springbok rugby player, Gcobani Bobo, visited Tzaneen to test some of our local school’s rugby players’ skill. Laerskool Tzaneen’s first and second rugby teams were the only primary school teams that attended this course. Bobo and his sponsor, Nashua, will visit over 800 schools to test the skills of the players. The tests ranged from throwing and catching the ball, how accurate and how far they can pass in a minute and some running and fitness skills. He will

return in six weeks and test the players again to see how they have improved. Gcobani Bobo is a South African rugby player. His preferred position is Centre, although he had played wing on numerous occasions, with some success due to his pace. The 37-year old powerhouse is seen as an inspiration to many of the young players around the country. His tour of the schools forms part of his ideology to plough back into the youth.

Stanford Lake College hosted its fifth annual triathlon, ‘The Wik’ Off-Road Triathlon, in memory of late friend and staff member, Wik van der Walt. Despite the poor weather, the number of athletes who attended the event was more than double that of 2016, a sign of not just how popular this event is, but also of the popularity of triathlon in Limpopo. The Mountain did not disappoint and the weather, combined with plenty of hills at altitude, made for some tough racing conditions. However, the athletes

had prepared well with hard training and put in great performances in difficult conditions, with the record being broken on the day by the overall men’s winners. In the short race it was Tzaneen local Kuno Venter in the men’s and Stanford pupil Ani Gutierrez-Hernandez, winning the ladies race. In the longer race (Stanfordian Challenge), local athlete Steve Willson won the men’s and defending ladies champ, Melanie Melville, held onto her title, coming in with ease well ahead of the field.

Larries complete the Wik Following the death of Wik van der Walt in 2012, during a mountain bike race, the staff at Stanford Lake College wanted to celebrate the life of their colleague and friend by hosting an off-road triathlon - the first ever in Limpopo. The race is now the only sanctioned Triathlon South Africa race in the province. After the huge success of the inaugural race in 2013, The Wik Off-road Triath-

lon expanded in 2014, with the addition of a longer race for the more serious athletes and Ironman hopefuls. The event is now a must do for beginners and fast becoming so for seasoned athletes. The Wik comprises of a 500m swim, 15 kilometre Mountain Bike trail and a 5 kilometre run with an age restriction of 15-years. On Sunday, 19 March, the 2017 instalment of this

annual race was held and Laerskool Tzaneen Primary sent a few of their teams to participate and show solidarity. Two teams, comprised of Grade

Wernich Schmidt, Adriaan Nel en Johan van den Heever.

Shané van den Heever, Louries Rossouw en Tessa van Heyningen.

Matthew van der Merwe, Carl Dohse en Ockert Schoeman.

7 boys, performed extremely well, they were placed fifth and sixth in the Sub-Junior category. The team of Wernich Schmidt, Johan van den Heever and Adriaan Nel completed the triathlon in a time of 1:33,30 and the team of Ockert Schoeman, Mat-

thew van der Merwe and Carl Dohse were close on their heels in a time of 1:34,47. Tessa van Heyningen, Shané van den Heever and Louries Rossouw participated in the Sprogs category and completed the race in 1:57,12, placed 5th in their age group. What made their results more amazing is that these teams competed in, and completed the Ebenezer Mile swim the day before they participated in this event. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Jackson-Archers still on top The South African National Field Archery Championships were held in Broederstroom earlier this month. Ten of Merensky’s finest archers travelled to this national competition in preparation of the World Championships which will be hosted in South Africa next year. Archers from across the country were present during this event which ran over three days, from 18 to 20 March. It is believed to have been a very challenging event with the archers having to walk through dense veld for approximately seven hours each day in order to fire off four arrows each at 28 dif-

ferent targets. For the third consecutive year, Canell Jackson and her sister, Beneché, rose above the pack at these championships to claim gold medals in their individual categories. Canell and her teammates, Sean Hunt and Benno Kotze managed good enough scores to afford them their provincial colours. The gold medal archers were Lin-Mari Theron (YAFBU), Canell Jackson (JFBU), Beneché Jackson (YAFFU) and Janco Theron (YAMBU). Rohan Wewege (JMBU) managed a very close second place silver medal.

The 34m Golden Girl

Elandri Janse van Rensburg brought her gold medal to school today. ‘They’ said she was a big fish in a small pond. ‘They’ said she wouldn’t feature outside of Tzaneen and that her performance was average at best, if compared to the athletes in the city with the expert coaches and big budgets. They were wrong. The 12-year old javelin thrower from Laerskool Tzaneen Primary won the gold medal at the South African championships last weekend with her personal best distance of 34.58 metres. That’s not only 44 centimetres short of the current South African record setup 17 years ago in Kroonstad by Lindi Jacobs (35.02m), but it is also further than any 12-year old boy in the Mopani district has managed to throw. To add credentials to just how impressive winning a gold medal at the Nationals was, Elandri only took up javelin two months ago. “The girls can only start throwing javelin at age 12,” explained her coach, Steven Cremore. “I have been coaching javelin for close on eight years now nd never have I seen talent like this in our region. Elandri is a natural athlete with the ambition to back it up.” This was the second time she had been to the national champi-

onships. Last year Elandri competed in the shotput event, but did not fair that well. It wasn’t until she spoke to a high school javeliner from Merensky, Janco Coetzee, that the bug bit and she started taking the sport seriously. According to her, Coetzee showed her the ropes which gave her the confidence to catch the eye of Mr Cremore. What’s next for this young athlete? “I don’t like shotput that much if I have to be honest,” she said. “Actually, my first love is cricket!” And it seems as though cricket loves her back. At age 10, Elandri played for the U/13 Limpopo girls team and is currently the captain of her school’s cricket team. The boys don’t mind having her in their squad either, as she boasts a recently recorded bowling speed of just under 99km/h and has a rather impressive batting average too. “I think that I will probably carry on with the javelin until I finish school or until I reach my goal distance of 60m.

My real dream-come-true moment would however, be to captain the Proteas Women one day.” Be that as it may, Elandri Janse van Rensburg, has become an overnight athletics sensation within the local community circles and one that is sure to inspire many future young athletes. “We are extremely proud of what she has accomplished in such a short time,” said mom Doret. “A massive word of gratitude goes

out to coach Cremore and the team and Laerskool Tzaneen Primary who have supported and guided Elandri on to the podium. We are ever so thankful to the community for their wonderful messages of congratulations over social media too. Without all of you, this would not have been possible.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
