Get the hawk outta here

Tzaneen’s pavements are overcrowded with the tattered, crudely constructed stalls which pass for hawkers’ fruit and vegetable stands. It is not a new problem, by no means, but it is a problem that the GTM seems to have chosen to avoid. According to a source at the municipality, this is because the municipality have no bylaws which they can use to enforce the law and remove illegal hawkers, or arrest those illegally hawking in areas not demarcated for business. One such area specifically, is the section of the R71 which runs past the Lifestyle centre. In the past month, three more stalls have popped up, and they have become more daring – arrogant even. The stalls are erected on the yellow barrier line. One of the vendors has tied his gazebo to the signpost which indicates “no hawking”. To add insult to injury, motorists are issued traffic fines for stopping along this stretch of road when they stop to buy fruit from one of the vendors. A permanent traffic camera

is stationed next to the road to monitor traffic coming into town from Georges Valley or Polokwane, but its line of sight is completely obscured by one of the vendors’ pallet-constructed stalls. In June 2015, a meeting between the GTM, the Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce, Business Against Crime, the Community Police Forum, SAPS representatives, business owners in the Tzaneen central business district and others role players was held at the municipal offices. The aim of the meeting was a way forward to end the problem. At this meeting a number of commitments were made – and as usual not followed through – which included the revival of the hawkers’ forum, the general management of the informal sector and the renewal of permits for hawking. It was also agreed that stricter policing would be implemented to curb illegal trading. Two years later and Tzaneen faces a serious problem. Hawkers are selling goods not listed on their permits, they are not

staying within their demarcated areas and most of them have no permits. When moved, they return the following day. “It is a massive problem for us,” said Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM. “I drove through that area just last week and made the comment that these people just ignore the law. I will have an official response as to what we are going to do, for you next week.” Bulletin spoke to the Provincial Traffic Chief, Victor Khumalo who said that the situation has escalated over the years and that the matter was raised with South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL). “This is not a new problem, in fact, the matter has already been to court. Every day we spend valuable time removing these hawkers, or issuing them with hefty fines,” Khumalo said. “They just keep coming back.” We will have a more detailed report next week as we receive comments from SANRAL, Provincial Traffic and the GTM. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Body found in Middle Letaba dam The body of a man was found floating in the Middle Letaba dam on Tuesday morning. The dam is situated in the Hlanganani policing area just outside Giyani. A passer-by noticed the body in the water and immediately called the Hlangani Police. The SAPS Search and Rescue divers retrieved the body from the water. The man was not yet identified at the time of going to print but he is believed to be a middle aged man. The cause of death is still being investigated and a post mortem will be conducted.

The body of an unidentified woman was found dumped next to a railway line near Schoemansdal, outside Makhado, on Wednesday afternoon. The police launched a massive manhunt for the killers, but at the time of going to print, no arrests had yet been reported. The victim was brutally murdered by an unknown number of assailants and police investigators found multiple stab wounds across her body. It did not appear as though she was sexually assaulted as she was fully clothed. Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said that the deceased was in her mid-twenties, of slender build and about 1,2 metres tall. She was wearing blue jeans, pink Puma sneakers, a blue t-shirt with a gold necklace. “We appeal to the public if anyone can assist in information that would lead to the arrest of the murderer or murderers of

this woman, to come forward.” Anyone with information may contact Lt Col Tshililo Ndou on 082-565-7877 or their nearest police station.

Leopard places waterfall on hold The reason the waterfall area in Modjadjiskloof is currently hard tasked to find the parking area. Toilets are locked in a state of neglect is because a leopard was spotted in the up and vandals have had their way with the security area. This is the official comment from the Greater Letaba gates, doors and windows – this despite a security Municipality (GLM) to our official enquiry on the matter. guard which is still employed by the GLM to “The Modjadjiskloof waterfall was never abandoned,” said stay on-site 24/7. The Mayor even held a ceremony at the site which had been revamped at the time with beautiful braai facilities, walking trails, toilet facilities and a beautiful new entrance way. The road to the site was also well kept and regularly scraped so as to make it accessible to all vehicles. That was back then (we are not sure of the exact date of the revamp as even the GLM could not provide us with a clear date). Today, the waterfall and accompanying braai areas are deserted. The entire site is One of the wooden walkways created to allow access over the ravine to the spacious picnic and braai areas. There are also fears that the site is being used by Satanists or occultists for rituals since its abandonment by the public. “The Mayor stays committed that the identified areas like the Caravan Park, Municipal residential Properties within town, and the waterfall are being prioritized for the near future as he stipulated at the IDP/Budget Public Participation Consultation held recently at Modjadjiskloof,” Maenetje concluded. When exactly the “near future” is, we are not sure. How much will be budgeted for the reconstruction, or how well it will be maintained and promoted this time round, is also questionable. The only certainty at the moment, is that the residents of Modjadjiskloof feel neglected and disappointed with their municipality. A video of Bulletin’s visit to the waterfall, where we spotted a strange ritual of some sorts (which we seem to have interrupted) can be viewed at www.bulletin.us.com — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

In total, 8 brick braai areas were constructed. Most of them have been left unkempt and are now hardly visible. The steel grids have also been removed by thieves.

The village festival was a resounding success

The double rainbow over the festival threw the area temporarily into this strange light.

The Food, Wine and Beer Festival held in the village of Haenertsburg over the weekend was an unprecedented success. This was largely due to the incredible organisation skills of one tiny dynamic individual in the form of Mara Hermann. She was seen days beforehand buying bales of yellow wool at the local store FoodZone. When asked what for she replied, “I’m thinking out the box and will use this wool to stake out the stalls.” Some 5,000 visitors attended the festival. The beer and wine flowed and the food stalls and restaurants were sold out of all produce. The Iron Crown Pub & Bistro sold all 350 oysters brought in fresh from the Western Cape. Owner James Halkon said, “We could have sold a lot more oysters but this was a test to see how well they sold. We’ll know to bring in more next time.” Visitors bought wine glasses at R20 for the small ones and R30 for the larger glasses. Those were then used for tasting the many wines on offer. Sisters Esther Humphries and Mona Runkel, in charge of sales, said they sold all their wine glasses. They also were in charge of selling boxes and bags of kiwis. Some of that produce was still left. Minki’s restaurant did a spit roast lamb and this was sold out. Gary Barnes from the Pot & Plow ran out of pizza bases. The band Jahworx Trio delighted visitors with their music.

The crush of thirsty wine lovers at one of the wine stalls.

Mina’s with their excellent food and Zwakala beer.

Pallets were placed in a U-shape near the musicians with maize bags filled with sawdust ingeniously used as padding on top of the pallets. Frans de Bruyn from Lekwar restaurant closed earlier on the Monday and said his restaurant was incredibly busy over the two day festival. The deck at The Red Plate was chock-a-block with customers as well. There were two designated parking areas with no parking allowed in the main road Rissik Street. The weather var-

ied from mild to cold with some drizzle and a beautiful double rainbow appeared fleetingly towards sunset on the Saturday. Kobus van Rensburg from the Garden Café in Tzaneen prepared a three course lunch at The Mountain Yacht Club on Ebenezer Dam for the Sunday. This Club is usually only for members. However it was flung open to the public and the lunch brought in some badly needed funding for maintenance and repairs at the club.

Whether selling their wares or enjoying a beer with friends, fun was had by all at the festival.

Six complete Gold level in President’s programme The President’s Award organization is an empowerment programme aimed at the enrichment of young lives that was started in 1983. Over the course of the last 30 years, this programme has become the self-development programme of choice for youths in South Africa. Their mission, with the assistance of adult volunteer leaders, is to empower young people between the ages of 14 and 25, by providing a balanced, non-competitive framework for self-development that will increase their self-esteem and enhance their capacity to achieve in whatever context they find themselves. Thus, enabling them to become responsible active citizens within their communities. Currently, a group of six pupils from Merensky High school is completing the gold level of this programme. They recently completed their residential project at Tshega Christian Missions during the week of 27 April to the first of May. During this project, they focused mainly on the Lighthouse Academy, a school in the Fobeni village in Bolubedu South, just outside Tzaneen. The group painted classrooms and notice boards and started a vegetable garden as part of the feeding scheme for the school’s learners. During these five days, they constructed educa-

tional resources from mostly recycled material. This all forms part of the requirements of the programme. The participants stayed at Riverside Backpackers, with volunteers from Germany and Israel. The common goal for the weekend was to support and uplift the community of Fobeni. After each long day’s work, they had time to socialise with the volunteers and learnt a lot about their countries and culture. Merensky wishes to thank the parents of these learners for all the donations of educational resources, vegetable seedlings and pot plants which contributed to the success of this project. Merensky would also like to thank the following people from Tshega Missions: Elani van Rooyen for all the arrangements since January; Bronwyn Holtzhauzen, who made sure the learners kept to the programme; Phumi Zondo and Cosmas Gamo, who acted as mentors for the Plasies, and Jackie van Tonder, the house master, who ensured a homely atmosphere and warm food daily at the Backpackers. For more information and updates on the progress of the group as they aim to complete their programme, visit the Merensky’s President’s Award Facebook page.

Dít is my krag en anker.” Glo in Jesus se liefde. Sê dit oor en oor vir jouself. Die Heilige Gees sal sy stempel daarop druk en in jou hart oorwinning bring. Johannes 13:1: “Hy het sy eie mense wat in die wêreld is liefgehad, Hy het hulle tot die uiterste toe liefgehad.”

JEEP(ers)! What a facelift ... and it’s not just skin deep

There’s style, and then there’s ruggedly good looking. For those who prefer both, there’s Jeep. Just a month after the official unveiling of their shockingly good-looking new showroom in Peace Street, Mercurius Motors Tzaneen have done it again. Motorists would have noticed the impressively stylish, new Jeep building on the corner of Peace and Skirving Streets, which seemed to have mushroomed up overnight. The building was completely revamped from the inside and out with new staff, new management and new deals to satisfy. As reported in an earlier edition of Bulletin, the new look is meant as a garnish to the sophisticated and highly professional service and care customers have become accustomed to. Pay Jeep a visit and meet the new faces behind this formidable brand. “We want to earn your trust every time you deal with us,” said Ridhwaan Jeewa, new dealer principle at Mercurius Motors Tzaneen. “How do we hope to achieve that? Well, through concrete values which include Passion, Excellence, Respect, Care and Honesty. We like to think of our dealership as more of a friendship where Mercurius Motors customers become much more than that. They become our friends.”

Plasies take a dive It was during the school holidays that three Merensky High School pupils decided to traverse the deep blue yonder to complete their Open Water Level 1 scuba course. The trio travelled to Sodwana Bay and sent these wonderful images back for their fellow pupils to appreciate. Anke Venter, Larissa Vogel and Luandi Venter are seen here during the scuba course.

Ten pupils from Merensky High School recently received their bronze President’s Awards certificates. To be able to meet the requirements for this reward, the participants completed 24 hours of community service over a period of 3 months, participated in a sport and practiced a skill for six months. They also completed a 2 day, 1-night hike of 24km accompanied by 12 hours planned activities. They qualified for this prestigious award after the journals they kept were assessed.

Blue is the new Green

Merenksy’s golfers have left the fairways in the region tainted blue following their second consecutive league match victory against HTS Tom Naude this past week. The teams won their league openers against Louis Trichardt earlier this month by three victories to one. This second round boasted a 4-0 victory.

Jeandré Booysen, Johan Meintjes, Janco Blignaut and Franco de Klerk.

Ruben Potgieter, Willem-Albert Ludick, Herman Grové and Colleen Natorp.

Revelas clears age hurdle A fifteen-year old girl from Stanford Lake College qualified to compete in the 400m hurdles event at the recent South African Clubs Athletics championships held at Greenpoint stadium in Cape Town. Lia Revelas said she was nervous, but determined to make her mark against her competitors who had a three-year advantage over her. She usually competes in the 300m hurdles for girls under 15, but because the club championships do not cater for her age group, she had to compete in the higher age group. “It was a little daunting standing there in the blocks at the start of the race. The other girls looked so much stronger than me, but I figured that I made it this far, and if I give it my best, I can only grow from this experience,” she said.

It was the second time that Lia would face the 400m event. Her previous run recorded a personal best time of 64,97 which helped her qualify for this event, during which she managed to secure a fifth place in her heat in a time of 66,20. Just a week before the club champs, Lia and three of her Stanfordian team mates competed at the South African Schools Athletics meeting, also in Greenpoint, where she ran a time of 45,18 in the 300m hurdles for girls u/15. During that race she finished second in her heat. “I can’t wait to try out for the schools and clubs championship again next year,” she said. “I believe that the experience I gained from the competition this year will be invaluable to my performance in 2018.” Her team mates, Mfumo Mongwe, Mafanedza Maiwashe and Lesedi Motumi, also recorded some

fantastic results during the clubs championships. Mongwe qualified to take part in the 100m sprints, the 200m sprints and the 400m relays for Men u/20 while Maiwashe competed in the 200m event for boys u/18. Lesedi Motumi competed in the Triple Jump for girls u/18. Mfumo Mongwe also joined Revelas later that week at the SA Schools championships where he took part in the 200m sprints for boys u/19 and finished in fifth place in his heat. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
