around 16:20 that afternoon, their Toyota Prado crashed head-on into an oncoming truck as they rounded a blind corner. The exact details of what happened is not yet clear, but it is reported that the truck was travelling on the wrong side of the road. Frank, Celeste and Franco died on the scene. Lenisé passed away a short while later and Janco, was rushed to Mediclinic Tzaneen. He was kept sedated as he had some swelling on his brain. He also had a broken arm and a fractured knee. Janco, the son of the vice-principal of Laerskool Phalaborwa, Cornel Oberholzer, is also a cancer survivor and at the time of going to print it was reported that he was stable. Lua did not see the accident which killed her entire family as the friends she was travelling with had stopped to refuel. She will now stay on with her grandmother on her father’s side, Herna Streicher. A memorial service for the Streicher family will be held tomorrow, in Phalaborwa. It was the family’s wish that they be cremated. Frank was a very well-known physiotherapist and

Celeste a teacher at Laerskool Phalaborwa. They moved to Phalaborwa roughly 12 years ago and became much loved among their peers for their kind and caring nature. Lenisé matriculated from Ben Vorster high school in Tzaneen last year and was studying to become a teacher. She was doing her internship at Laerskool Phalaborwa at the time of the accident. She was described by her colleagues and former classmates as a ray of sunshine within the Tzaneen community. Ben Vorster High has extended their condolences to the family at this very traumatic time. Her memorial service will be held today at the In-House Lifestyle centre in Phalaborwa at 14:00. Lenisé is survived by her mother and stepfather, Lyndie and David Raath, her father Wikus Janse van Vuuren, her sisters Abbey and Lizani and her brother, Schalk. “The world became poorer today…and the heavens richer,” said one message over social media. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Phalaborwa and Tzaneen mourn the loss of a beloved family, and a student teacher this week, following a horrific accident on the Gravelotte road just past the Selati Ruins. Frank (41) and his wife Celeste (40) Streicher were returning home from Letsitele on Saturday afternoon. They were attending a school sports day at Dr Annecke Primary school where they watched their son score his first try during a ‘bulletjie’ rugby match. In the car with them was their son, Franco (6), his friend Janco Oberholzer (6) and a primary school intern-teacher, Lenisé Janse van Vuuren (19). The couple’s daughter, Lua (8), was travelling with friends in another vehicle. It is reported that at

Haenertsburg School trashed Two offices at Haenertsburg Primary school were trashed on Thursday night. It’s believed the vandals wanted cash but the school deals in non-cash payments. The vandals cut a hole in the roof above the offices. The two most important offices were trashed – the finance office and Sonja Liebenberg’s office. The huge medical cupboard, in her office, was trashed. Drawers were ripped open and contents strewn on the floor. Tables were overturned and the safe was crudely opened.

Cheetah Metapopulation explained Vincent van der Merwe (34) heads up the • cheetah metapopulation in South Africa. • This approach to conservation began with the black rhino expansion project in 2003, then wild dogs in 2009. The cheetah metapopulation project was launched in 2011. South Africa is the only country in the world that has had an increase in these species. Vincent Haenertsburg-born van der Merwe Vinny studied entomology insects, then genetics for Honours, his Masters in Conservation and his PhD will be on cheetah conservation. He studied at the University of Pretoria and began his three-year PhD in Cape Town this year. Vinny says, “At the Endangered Wildlife Trust I manage 54 fenced reserves that hold cheetahs across South Africa. This metapopulation, a whole lot of fragmented populations, supports 334 cheetahs. Each reserve has, on average, 6 or 7 cheetahs which means inbreeding is a potential issue. My job is to relocate the cheetahs to prevent inbreeding.” Wild cheetah occur in South Africa in three scenarios.

Stand van Damme Dam Levels

The metapopulation on 54 reserves. Two huge reserves, namely KNP and Kgalagardi. KNP has 410 and Kgalagardi 200. These two areas have a large enough gene pool and don’t need to be managed. • A free roaming population of some 370 cheetah in farmlands on the border with Botswana. Once every four years the

Endangered Wildlife Trust does a public census and counts the cheetah in the KNP. The human population in Africa has seen exponential growth for the past 13, 000 years. The problem began when we stopped being hunter/gatherers and started farming crops and livestock. Cheetah were killed when taking livestock and they have simply run out of space due to crop farming and urban development. It is our firm belief that cheetah do not belong in cages, but rather in the wild where they can do what they have being doing for thousands of years. Vinny says, “Moral of the story is that wildlife and humans don’t coexist well. One way to deal with that is to fence the humans out and the animals in for their safety. But when you fence you limit natural gene flow. Moving the animals between the fenced populations will retain genetic integrity.” He concluded, “As long as we manage these fragments responsibly by fencing and implementing human mediated gene flow, our wildlife will pull through the next 100 years of exponential human population on the African continent.”

Three arrested for pangolin poaching A female Temminck’s ground (Smutsia temminckii) pangolin, also known as scaly anteater, has been seized by the authorities and three people have been arrested. The case will be heard in the Tzaneen Magistrates Court. The poachers were stealing the leaves from the tree catha edulus also known as Bushman’s Tea, in the mountains around Ohrigstad. These leaves contain a drug called cathinone and are chewed constantly creating a prolonged wakefulness and alertness. It is illegal to steal catha edulus. Whilst stealing the leaves a pangolin, a predominantly nocturnal animal, was discovered and taken home to an impoverished township near Polokwane. In trying to sell the pangolin, the most trafficked mammal on earth, the poachers approached a farmer who, although he’d never seen such an animal, contacted the Endangered Wildlife Trust. Most people do not know pangolins as they are such shy and unobtrusive animals. Prince Harry from the UK famously said, “When the pangolin goes extinct, most people won’t even know what it looked like.” Negotiations began at this low level but failed. Then a Reserve was called in to assist. The manager offered the poachers a substantial amount of money and the arrests followed shortly thereafter. It’s believed that this pangolin had been out of her natural environment for the past three days. She has subsequently been released into a reserve. There is another pangolin case pending in the Tzaneen Courts but there’s a warrant out

for Mr Chauke’s arrest as he’s skipped his court appearance. He poached a pangolin from the Venda area. There are four pangolin species in Asia and another four in Africa. As recently as 2016, CITES moved all eight pangolins onto Appendix 1 of the CITES list. This means that any trade in pangolins and/or their body parts is now illegal. One million pangolins have been poached in the last decade. Twelve tons of scales have been intercepted leaving Africa for Hong Kong in 2016 alone. As pangolin populations in Asia dwindle, more and more are now being captured in Africa to meet the ever-growing Chinese and Vietnamese demand. The pangolin shell is so tough that it can resist the teeth of lions, tigers and leopards. It rolls up into a tight ball when threatened.

Road accidents claim two young hippos

The carcass of the animal was taken to a sanctuary after it was euthanized by a PH from the area.

Two young hippo bulls were euthanized this past week in Tzaneen after accidents involving vehicles. In one incident on Friday evening near Haenertsburg, a hippo was struck by a bakkie travelling over the bridge on the R71. The driver of the vehicle, Mr Hugo van den Dool, escaped injury and the animal ran off into the bushes. A search was launched and two days later, the hippo was spotted at the Ebenezer dam. The animal was visibly in pain and had blood coming from its mouth. It was limping and upon inspection it was discovered that one of its back legs were broken. The animal was euthanized. In the second incident, an injured hippo bull made its way to the entrance gates of the Department of Water Affairs behind the Tzaneen dam wall on Sunday evening. “My workers called me to come and have a look as they said the animal was in pain,” explained Mr Charl Verwey. “It was a young bull, maybe two or three years old at most and he was in some serious distress. He had a massive wound on his side and back and one of his legs were swollen to about double the size of the other three.”

Verwey contacted the SPCA and SANParks who came to the site to assess the animal. “This young bull was definitely hit by a vehicle,” said Ellie Potgieter, inspector at Letaba SPCA. “Blood was running from his nose, he had broken ribs and a lot of bruising on his side. One of his legs was also inflamed. We decided upon a thorough assessment that it would be in the interest of the animal if we had it euthanized.” A PH was called in and after the animal was shot, the carcass was moved to a sanctuary to feed other animals. “That is the only thing we can do with a carcass after something like this. We put it back into the environment.” When asked about the possible reasons behind the recent increase in hippos being hit by vehicles along the roads in the area, Potgieter explained that construction plays a major factor. “The construction currently taking place at the Tzaneen dam is effectively ruining the hippos’ natural feeding grounds and they then move towards other areas. Hippos are nocturnal and move from water to water in search of grass at night time. They only eat grass, nothing else. When you take away their grass, they will walk to another spot. This is why they are crossing roads at night and why drivers are hitting them.” It is the fourth report in the province this month alone, of hippos being hit by vehicles along highways at night. Motorists are urged to travel with caution as wild animals not only cause damage to your vehicle, but may result in serious injuries or even death should you hit one of them at speed. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Passionate about our vehicles

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Greetings in the Name of Christ! One of the most difficult tasks one has to do is to announce the death of someone to their family. I have often wondered what training is given to those in the police or emergency services as how to approach this subject. Do they select someone who has empathy or is it expected of the first responder to go and give the bad news to the family? I know that I, personally, have found this a very difficult task and I have had the training. How do you tell someone else, especially if it has been a close family member who has passed away and you are in shock and disbelief? When does it pass from the right time to too late? Often people expect you to be the strongest one and if you do not do it immediately, you are thought to be callous and uncaring. Who do you tell first, what about your state of mind at that moment when you hear the news yourself? Family are often the most judgemental when you fail to contact them immediately. They say time heals, but I doubt this is the truth, many will still be judging you all the time. It always comes as a shock when one hears about a death after a period of time has passed. Jesus died on the cross and His disciples were witnesses to this, they had to tell others about it. We as Christians have been told this news many years later and it has not always been by word of mouth, we could have read it in the Bible. I wonder if it would have been easier if modern technology was available? Who did the disciples have tell first? Were they too judged for not telling everyone immediately? Our faith often carries us through these difficult situations and yes people will still judge you for your failures, but God always forgives you for your failures and knows your weaknesses because He loves you just as you are. Humans on the other hand always think you have some sort of hidden agenda when you fail to live up to their standards. I believe as long as we attempt to live up to the standards the God has set for us, we will be forgiven. However, no matter how hard you try to please others, some will never believe you. One needs to continue to pray for them and believe that God will change their hearts and minds. “Love one another just as I have loved you” Blessings.

What happened at PMC?

The strike at the Palabora Mining Company (PMC) copper mine in Phalaborwa has entered its sixth day. The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) embarked on a legal strike on the 3rd of May over wage negotiations. Union leaders issued PMC with a notice to strike the day before. The union is demanding a 12% increase in wages for 2017, 11% for 2018 and 10% for 2019 while the management of PMC is offering only 8% for 2017, 7% for 2018 and 7% for 2019. On Thursday afternoon (4 May) chaos broke out at the mine when striking AMCU members took to aggressively blocking the entrance and exit routes to the mine, trapping approximately 1 500 workers inside. Employees wanting to leave the mine were unable to do so and sat in their vehicles in a que stretching over almost four kilometres, until 21:00 that evening. Members of the SAPS and Phalaborwa Community Policing

Forum were activated and dispersed the rioters before any violent clashes could erupt. “It was like a scene from the movie Mad Max,” said one employee who was stuck at PMC during the protest. “When the first entrance gate was cleared, everybody put foot and raced for the gates! I don’t even know how many international mining safety regulations were contravened in just those first few minutes!” At 06:00 the following morning, the employees not affiliated to AMCU, returned to work faithfully as they did each day. A few hours later at 08:00 the management of the mine issued an emergency evacuation procedure and an hour later the facility was again left deserted. The weekend went well with no further strike action, but Monday started off with shift workers having to spend the night sleeping on the workshop floors without food and water as AMCU members again blocked all exits to the mine.

Bulletin managed to speak to Lydia Radebe, the External Affairs and Communication manager at PMC, on Wednesday. “This is a legal strike. And it is therefore a protected strike, but unfortunately some members of the union have taken to illegal measures to voice their protest,” Radebe said. “We believe that given the current economic circumstances and unfavourable commodities prices internationally, the mine’s offer of 8% for 2017 and 7% for 2018/2019, is a very amicable offer. As we speak, top management is locked in a room with the leadership of AMCU to find a way to end this strike action.” According to Radebe, the mine employs 3700 employees - including contractors, and their records state that 600 of those employees are currently part of the strike action. Whether those workers who were stuck inside the mine will be compensated, she could not say. She further stated that PMC values the

safety of their employees and are doing everything in their power to bring an end to the crisis. The mine was closed on Tuesday in order to give top management the opportunity to engage in talks with the unions and find an amicable end to the situation. “Given the illegal acts by some of the AMCU striking employees and some unwanted events of the past week, the company is increasingly becoming concerned about the safety of employees. Management has thus taken a decision to close the mine until Friday, 12 May 2017. Essential services employees will still be expected to report to duty during this period.” The mine reopened again this morning. At the time of going to print, Bulletin had received information that PMC management had signed a three year wage agreement with NUM and are now waiting for NUM to discuss it with their members. AMCU were still on strike and negotiations were continuing. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Malaria “outbreak” slightly exaggerated Malaria is endemic to the Limpopo province. Each year, hundreds of people fall ill from this mosquito transmitted disease and in the last three weeks concerns were raised over the apparently higher than usual number of cases reported in the Mopani district. According to Philip Kruger, the director for Malaria at the Limpopo Department of

Health, the recent increase in reported malaria cases is no real reason for panic. “In the 2013/2014 season, there were massive malaria outbreaks all across the Mopani District too. In fact, the numbers were a lot more than this year. Over the past twenty years, malaria cases have varied from 1 400 to 11 000 and this, for lack of a better phrase, is considered to be within the norm.” Malaria is a mosquito-borne parasitic infection spread by Anopheles mosquitoes. The Plasmodium parasite that causes malaria is neither a virus nor a bacterium – it is a single-celled parasite that multiplies in red blood cells of humans as well as in the mosquito intestine. Each year, the Department has a malaria spraying programme through which they

spray around 700 000 homes within the entire Mopani District, as a preventative counter-measure against the parasite. They have been doing this since 1947 and it entales teams going from door to door spraying homes with a specialised insecticide. “The spraying programme can be likened to an insurance policy and the mixture we use lasts extremely long. What made this year a little different is the recent heavy rains following our extended drought period last year, and the late winter. It was also Easter weekend which meant that people travelled a lot and quite possibly picked up the parasite elsewhere while on holiday.” The most significant increase in malaria infections were reported in the Thohoyandou and Vhembe areas. A total of 600 cases were reported at the time of going to print within

the Mopani District. That’s in all the health institutions within the region. “The real problem is in our neighbouring countries Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana where they reported 4 million malaria cases this year alone. That pushed through our borders. In a very wide area we have seen a few isolated cases which then add up to be many.” Kruger confirmed the reports of a shortage of malaria medication in both state and private hospitals and explained that there is one international supplier of the various types of medication. “With the massive outbreak in our neighbouring countries, they became the priority and the medication was therefore sent to them first which resulted in some shortage experienced locally. There were five days that we were left with a shortage of medication over the long weekend of 28 April.” The situation is said to be returning to normal and it is expected that within the next few weeks it would have completely dissipated. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Do not buy forest vines and ferns Once again hawkers are selling illegal flora at the lookout point on the Magoebaskloof. The indigenous forests of the Magoebaskloof have been raped of vines and ferns for years. The ecological damage is irreparable and it takes many decades for the forests to recover when vines are stolen. Without vines the indigenous trees are

exposed to sunlight and die. The vines are pliable and fashioned into baskets and floral accessories highly sought after in South African city centres. Buyers have to be made aware that purchasing forest vine baskets with or without the ferns is illegal. Various government departments were contacted but refused to comment.

Vaalwater kicks off season

The first round of the Limpopo Mountain Bike Cross Country Series kicked off at Vaalwater on the 29th of April. This year saw the inaugural event at the farm in Vaalwater, after the owner, Mr Baber, built the XCO track in aid of cycle development. It is considered by many to be a track for anyone looking to better their skills and comes highly recommended after the weekend’s event. Ten students from Stanford Lake College, and one of their teachers, competed in the event and had to navigate a very technical

track with a number of jumps and drops to manage a few podium spots on the day. Rueben Middleton and Herman Fourie finished in 4th and 2nd spots respectively in the Sub-Junior boys while Danica Altenroxel finished 3rd in the Youth women category. Matt Wilkinson claimed a second place in the Junior men’s race and staff member, Mr Tiaan Fullard, managed a silver in the Elite men category. “It was a good day of riding and showed a very promising start to the new cycling season,” said Fullard after the event.

SLC blazing a trail in International Education Stanford Lake College is proud to have been selected to be featured in Cambridge University’s new publication, ‘Innovation 800’, which celebrates innovation in education. This publication celebrates schools and Universities from throughout the world that are leading the development and delivery of innovative educational programmes. The publication celebrates the development and successes of both the ‘Dream an’ Do’ outdoor education programme, as well as the newly implemented ‘Round Square Discovery Framework’ Character Education programme (RSDF) both of which are delivered in the junior (Grade 8 & 9) years at the College. The positive impact on students is such that Mr Carolan, the College Headmaster, was recently invited by Round Square International to deliver a Keynote talk in Hong Kong to leading international schools about the implementation and successes of the RSDF. After the positive response and feedback from his Hong Kong talk, Mr Carolan has subsequently been asked to deliver this talk in London in June and will, at the same time, meet with the Cambridge University Education faculty in June to look at further ways Stanford Lake College can collaborate with them in this regard. The RSDF and ‘Dream an’ Do’ Outdoor programmes focus on developing key skills in the students; these skills were identified by Forbes, the world-renowned global media company who focus on learning, business and leadership, as the key skills in determining success both at

University and in life beyond. The twelve skills which form the basis of the RSDF are introduced and developed throughout the Grade 8 and 9 years at the College, and include characteristics such as; Tenacity, Courage, Self-awareness, Inquisitiveness, Ability to solve problems, an Appreciation for Diversity, Communication skills and Teamwork. Students and staff measure themselves against these characteristics to ensure they are constantly improving so that they may eventually become the business leaders of the future. Stanford is also one of only fifteen South African schools who have been invited to be part of Cambridge University’s inaugural ‘Education and Sustainability Leadership Programme’ being hosted in Cape Town over the July holidays. The aim of this Conference is to develop programmes in our schools which will help educate our young people to be Global Sustainable Leaders of the future. As an Internationally minded school, Stanford Lake College also prides itself on developing young minds who are environmentally aware and who will contribute in a positive way to the sustainable future of our country and to the world beyond. Stanford is extremely proud and excited to be associated with Cambridge University, a global leader in tertiary education, as well as Round Square International and look forward to developing on-going links with them and other Universities, which will no doubt continue to benefit both their students and staff in the future.

Vossies do well at Wildeklawer

The NTT Toyota Netball team is Chanelle Machimane, Lerato Hutamo, Tsepang Pilusa, Ndavi Nokeri, Meriam Modiba, Nielia Blignaut, Dora Maloba, Kagiso Mapiti and Nandipha Rikhotso.

The Wildeklawer schools rugby- and netball tournament was hosted in Kimberly this year. It is regarded as the biggest schools rugby and netball tournament in the country and saw 128 teams participating in last year’s installment. The first tournament was hosted at Paarl Gymnasium from the 24th of April 2009 with 12 top graded rugby schools and two invitational teams. After 2009 the tournament was hosted in Pretoria, Kimberley (2011 and 2012), Maritzburg College in 2013 and 2014, and in 2015 at Diamantveld

in Kimberley. This year, Ben Vorster High School sent their NTT Toyota team (the First Team) down to the big hole to participate. The girls faced the toughest schools in the country as the Top 12 Schools teams were in attendance. Despite not managing a win during their campaign, the Vossies displayed some top class skills on the courts, making it difficult for their opponents, right across the board. The team fought hard against Menlopark

but had to settle for a 22-27 loss. Against Stellenberg, the Vossies succumbed to a 20-30 defeat while only one point stood between them and victory over Rustenburg in a match that ended 28-27. In the quarter finals the Vossies were up against the formidable Paarl Gymnasium. It was a tough match and the Vossies fought valiantly, but in the end the Paarl girls won that match by a single point with 24 points to 23. They played two “Ratings” matches to end their tournament. The first, was against

Potchefstroom Gymnasium which Ben Vorster lost 24-28 and in the second match they once again faced Rustenburg. That match was won by Rustenburg with a score of 28-25. “We are very proud of our team who played exceptional netball and held their own against some much stronger opponents. Well done girls and thank you to Ms Jorina Vorster who accompanied the girls on their trip as their coach.” — Joe Dreyer
