tutions is that they all admit it is a problem. The most controversial area affected by these illegal, socalled “informal” traders, is the stretch of road along the R71 past the Lifestyle centre leading towards George’s Valley. We counted 11 makeshift pallet-and-canvas trading spots scattered along this very busy national road. Not only do these vendors blatantly ignore the three ‘no-stopping’ sign posts and the two ‘no-trading’ boards, they actually use these national road signs as support for their very rickety abominations they claim are fruit stalls. “Ah, I get the fruit from the farmers,” said one ‘vendor’ we spoke to. “And it’s nice and fresh with a special price just for you, boss.” Which farmers he was “getting the fruit” from, he could not say specifically, and upon further questioning he realized he was being interviewed and walked away. Besides their presence there being an absolute eyesore and

a desecration of a once beautifully scenic stretch of road, these hawkers are a very real danger to the public. Stopping in the emergency lane - or on the road shoulder - to purchase illegal goods from these vendors is against the law for a reason. Supporting these vendors can be likened to purchasing pirate dvds. “The danger lies in that stopping or pulling over to the side of a very busy road such as the one in question, could cause accidents,” said Moses Malungane, spokesperson of RAL. “If it is not a designated area for these hawkers to trade, they are not allowed to do so. It is against the law.” At the time of going to print we failed to get comment from the spokesperson of SANRAL and we will therefore follow up on this matter in our next edition. — Joe Dreyer

Tzaneen is lawless. It is a place where illegal street vendors overrun the sidewalk of not only the usual spots in the CBD - where one would expect this type of trading - but now even the national roads. We have reported on this matter extensively in previous editions and despite the negative publicity our reports generate for Tzaneen, not one official bats an eyelid. The most reaction we have managed to get from anyone in a position of authority is blame shifting. The Traffic Department said it is a concern to them and they struggle to get the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) to cooperate with them. The SAPS cannot arrest the vendors because what are they going to be charged with, and the GTM said that it is not their concern as it is a national road and South African Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) needs to deal with the matter. The only positive derived from speaking to the various insti-

Above: The old oxidation dams outside Modjadjiskloof now paint a bright green, almost computer-generated hue, across the stretch of land near the Waterfall. The stream has been contaminated by daily raw sewerage dumped into it by the GLM’s honey sucker tractor team. Below: A close up of another section of veld within a residential neighbourhood in Modjadjiskloof where raw sewerage runs into properties daily.

The Modjadjiskloof municipality (GLM) has denied having any knowledge of sewerage being illegally dumped at the old oxidation pools in that town, by the municipal “honey sucker” tractor. Two weeks ago, Bulletin reported on the serious environmental impact that the dumping of sewerage daily, has had on the area around Modjadjiskloof. Some of the town’s residents have not yet been connected to the ‘new’ sewerage system which was installed in Modjadjiskloof in 2011. These unconnected properties include the Goue Jare old age home and a few other sites around the outskirts of the town centre. They still rely on the honey sucker tractor which has to empty out their septic tanks on a daily basis. The sewerage is supposed to be dumped at a designated sewerage works in Kgapane – a 1,3 kilometre drive outside of town. This is not done. Instead, the tractor team drives past the graveyard on a gravel road that leads to the old waterfall site. Here, a few hundred metres from a residential area,

they empty out the septic tank into the veld. Many years ago, this was the old oxidation dam for the processing of raw sewerage, but it has not been operational in decades. According to a source, the tractor team said that they dump the sewerage here because the community complains that they take too long to empty the septic tanks in the mornings. They blame this on the distance that they have to travel to the sewerage works in Kgapane. “The municipal tractor has been dumping sewerage in Kgapane for over a year now,” said Lovers Maenetje of the GLM. “If there are other people still dumping in the old place, it is illegal. The municipality is urging community members to alert the institution of such activities.” We asked Maenetje why it was that some homes and properties were still not connected to the old sewerage system upon which she replied that the municipality is able to connect properties to the sewerage network upon request by said property owners in areas where

lines are available. “The municipality is still awaiting the Mopani District Municipality to cater for areas where a line is unavailable.” In the meantime, the DA in that town have made it clear that they plan on taking legal action against the GLM to prevent any further pollution or water contamination by the illegal practices of their employees. “The guys dump the sewerage here because it is too far for them to drive to the site in Kgapane,” said Frederick Pohl, DA Councillor at Modjadjiskloof. “We are obligated under Article 20(3) of the Water and Sanitation act to report the matter to Environmental Affairs. The municipality is breaking the law by not adhering to Article 28 of the Environmental Management Act which states that the municipality has the duty to care about and report all pollution to the relevant departments. We will have to report this to ensure that the municipality is forced to comply and prevent further pollution.” — Joe Dreyer

Hannah is still recovering Little Hannah Maritz (8) is still recovering at the Sunshine private hospital in Benoni, Gauteng. Hannah sustained serious head injuries when the vehicle she and her family were travelling in, was t-boned by a motorist who skipped a red light outside Polokwane two weeks ago. The accident happened on the corner of Biccard and Marshall Streets. Hannah and her two brothers, Matthew (14) and Jayden (12) were returning home from a gymnastics competition with mom, Daphne and dad, Coenie. The family do not have medical aid and were first treated on the scene before transported to a private facility through the help of funds generated by the community. Pastor Coenie Maritz heads the Phalaborwa congregation of One Way Ministries. He and his family have all recovered well from their respective injuries

and are now at Hannah’s side praying non-stop for a full recovery. Daily messages of hope and support for “Little Hannah” have been streaming in over social media. Friends of the family from as far as Australia have offered financial assistance to maintain the private care for Hannah while she recovers. Scans performed on Hannah this week revealed that she sustained injuries to the right side of her brain. She is still kept sedated and doctors have told the family that they do not want to operate as they believe that the brain is busy healing itself. A tube has been placed down Hannah’s throat to assist in the removal of phlegm from her lungs and to prevent infections that may occur. The boys are no longer in hospital and are healing well. They each suffered some rib fractures and back injuries,

but are now almost completely healed. Mom, Daphne, who sustained a fractured pelvis and some back trauma, is mobile and recovering well. She was moved to a room across from the ICU so that she can be nearer to her daughter. In a Facebook Live update on Wednesday morning the family revealed that finances are still desperately needed. “We cannot express our gratitude enough for the overwhelming support we have received thus far. Many people have made statements asking why we need money. We are not ashamed to admit that we require funds for various things such as food and clothing for the duration of our stay, but most importantly for the escalating medical bills that are now piling up.” Those willing and able to assist

Nothing new at pool

A well-known Tzaneen resident and businessman passed away in Mediclinic Sunnyside this month. Hennie van Vreden (57) died on the 12th of May following a lengthy battle with various health conditions related to being a paraplegic. Many will remember him as one of the directors of the very successful panel beater outfit, Van Vredens Panel Beaters, which he operated daily along with his family. A memorial service for Hennie will be held this afternoon at 14:00 at the Ducth Reformed Church (Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk) in Tzaneen.

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) remains tight-lipped about the future of the newly appointed swimming pool boss, Vikramjith “Vicky” Singh (60). This after Bulletin exposed his shady history which included a run-in with the Hawks and him being sacked on charges of gross misconduct. “The swimming pool is closed for the winter season right now,” said Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM. “I am not too sure what his (Singh) contract period is, but I have no further information at this stage.” Singh was fired from the very same position at a previous municipality in March 2014. This is according to a source who worked in that metro with Singh. He was then appointed by the GTM earlier this year into the very same position at

the Tzaneen municipal swimming bath. The position of lifeguard at the Tzaneen facility was advertised on the GTM’s website in November 2016. The position is a 12-month fixed term contract (non-renewable) and offers a remuneration of R207 990.44 for the term (which is nearly R100 000 less per annum than the proposed salary for a cashier at the same complex. We have reported extensively on the legality of this appointment and whether thorough investigations into Singh had in fact been conducted prior to his employment by the GTM. To date we had no clear answers from the GTM. Perhaps the entire two-year-long ‘Poolgate’ debacle has now become an embarrassing situation for them which is easier to ignore than rectify? — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Pangolin poaching suspects appear in court Two men and a woman, suspects in the most recent pangolin bust, have appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrates Court. Simba Simango (32), Jacob Thosago (27) and Chipo Maphosa (19) were denied bail and their case was remanded to Friday (Today) for a formal bail application and further police investigation. The pangolin, threatened with extinction, is the most trafficked mammal on earth. Two Zimbabwean pangolin poachers were found guilty and convicted in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court this week to five years jail and a R10, 000 fine to be paid to the African Pangolin Working Group

(APWG). This is only the second pangolin conviction in the country and the sentence is double what it was in the first conviction that took place in Nelspruit, says APWG. Meanwhile pangolin poacher, David Chauke from Soweto, has still not been arrested. He skipped bail at the Tzaneen Magistrates Court. He poached a pangolin from the Thoyandou area in Venda. Chauke is not the only one to have skipped bail. There are currently two pangolin poachers on the run who didn’t comply with the court dates. This sets a precedent for harsher or no bail conditions for pangolin related wildlife crimes say APWG.

At the CITES conference, held in Johannesburg in 2016, all eight pangolin species were upgraded to Appendix 1. Now protected it means stiffer sentences. The sentence for Limpopo is a maximum of 15 years or a R250, 000.00 fine. Africa has four species and Asia the other four. As pangolin populations in Asia are dwindling, more and more are being captured in Africa to meet the ever-growing Chinese and Vietnamese demand for pangolin meat and scales. The APWG together with the SA postal service will release four stamps depicting the four African species later this year.

Japannees, Chinees of Taiwannees?”

Caught up in the 1976 turmoil Mona Runkel (67) moved to Haenertsburg nine years ago. She ran the Stanford Lake College tuck shop together with her older sister. Now they live in the village Garden Cottages and are house sitters to homes in the area preferably with pets. Mona, born in Langlaagte, Johannesburg, was involved in laboratory work and began her career at the blood transfusion division of SANBS in Johannesburg at the age of 25. She then moved to the cytology section of the SAIMR (South African Institute for Medical Research) in Hillbrow which involved preparing cells for analysis. This led to a position in cytology at the Chris Hani Barag-

wanath hospital near Soweto. The 16th June 1976 seemed like any normal work day to Mona. She recalls, “At about 11:00 we heard a noise that sounded like waves breaking at the sea. We went to look at casualty and they told us students are storming the hospital. Security told us to return to the labs. By 13:00 the noise was intolerable. I snuck back to casualty and saw shot children being wheeled in. It was so traumatic and upsetting. We were given a police escort out of there. We drove alongside Soweto. There were thousands of students on either side of the road with pyramids of rocks, shouting and screaming.

Tourists at the Hector Peterson memorial in Vilakazi Street. Sam Nzima’s photograph is on the left. The dying Hector Peterson is being carried away by Mbuyisa Makhubo and accompanied by his sister Antoinette Sithole.

My colleagues who had school-going siblings were even more traumatized. If these siblings didn’t want to take part in the riots, they were forced to do so. We couldn’t return to work for three days. When we did, we had to go around the back which was an army camp called Diepkloof, a suburb of Soweto.” Twenty three people died on that first day in Soweto. It heralded major changes in the landscape of South Africa, and 16 June is now a national holiday called Youth Day. Among the dead was Hector Peterson (13) immortalised in Sam Nzima’s iconic photograph. It’s become a symbol of the Soweto uprising and stands as a memorial now on the famous Vilakazi Street in Soweto. Mona’s biggest achievement came in 1984 when a pathologist offered her a post in histopathology, the study of tissue, in Durban. With it came much Mona Runkel more responsibility and a bigger staff complement. What began in a servant’s quarter has progressed to one of the most competitive and successful laboratories in Durban. The most rewarding part of this job was going to theatre with the pathologists. Sometimes she worked in theatre for a straight 11 hours. Mona says, “The pathologist analyses the tissue immediately and it has to be

done super fast as they can’t keep the patient under anaesthetic for too long. I’d prepare the slides for a decision to be made, for example, whether a patient should undergo a mastectomy or lumpectomy. I’ve also been involved in brain biopsies. The most valuable learning curve for me was being taught how the body works.”

Free knowledge for all Books, books and more books! The Haenertsburg Rotarians just received a massive shipping container filled to the brim with educational school books ranging from Biology to the fundamentals of basic Math Literature. These books arrived from Canada and are now right for the picking to any and

all. Twenty five tonnes of knowledge is waiting to be collected from the vacant premises of the Waterberg Outdoor centre in the old industrial area just off Plantasie Road. “We have made these books freely available to anybody who needs them and we ask that schools or other institu-

tions come by and load as many as they want!” So says Mr Bernard van den Dool, Assistant to District Governor of the Haenertsburg Rotary Club. “We have to find homes for these books before the end of May as this vacant shop we have been allowed to use, will soon be occupied.”

Time for annual Rabies inoculations Rabies is a fatal viral disease which can affect all mammals, including humans. In South Africa, the disease is endemic and is primarily carried by dogs and jackals in the northern & eastern areas of the country. Rabies is typically spread through the saliva-contaminated bite of an infected animal, but may also be transmitted through saliva contamination of the mucous membranes (such as through licking). Once the virus gains entry into a new host, it spreads along the nervous system until it

reaches the brain, upon which symptoms will typically appear. Behavioural changes, especially aggression and unprovoked attacks, are the most common indicator of rabies in dogs, but symptoms can vary between different species. A paralytic, or dumb form of the disease is also recognised in which progressive paralysis and profuse salivation occur. In animals, death typically occurs within 10 days, and five days or less in the case of humans. In humans, rapid administration

the annual inoculation against Rabies. Free vaccinations of dogs and cats will be offered by the office of the Tzaneen State Vet at various points from 08:30 till 17:30 from Monday 22 May 2017 to Friday 26 May 2017). All residents of the area are urged to utilise the opportunity to prevent any spread of the disease. Vaccination points in Tzaneen: 1. Tzaneen State Vet Office, 20 Peace Street 2. Tzaneen Dam Jetty 3 3. OK Mini Market (Sugar Loaf) 4. Tzaneen Showgrounds next to Spur The cooperation of all residents of the Tzaneen municipality is thus requested to prevent the further spread of the disease. For more information, please contact the office of the State Vet in Tzaneen at (015) 307-2800. Look out for posters with dates for Rabies vaccination for an area near you.

of the post-exposure prophylactic treatment immediately following exposure to an infected animal is highly effective in preventing the disease from developing. Once symptoms appear however, death is inevitable. Since rabies is a notifiable disease, the office of the State Vet must be informed of any animal suspected of being infected with the disease. The animal will have to be euthanized and the brain preserved in order for laboratory confirmation of the disease. The outcome of this test will guide the response which will follow. The office of the State Vet must also be informed when dogs or cats die from signs of the nervous system as mentioned above. High levels of vaccination of domestic animals, particularly dogs, are required to prevent the rapid spread of the disease following a single case. Residents of the areas of the Tzaneen, Politsi, George’s Valley, Westfalia, Magoebaskloof, Haenertsburg, Agatha, Lushof areas are requested to bring their dogs & cats for

Merensky netball shows promising results With the recent league games against Pietersburg High School, Merensky’s netball teams showed some spirit and returned with some good (albeit mixed) results. The u/14 teams both lost their games against the mighty Greens from Polokwane with the A-team scoring 10 goals in answer to 33 by PHS. The B-team lost by 5 points in a game that ended 6-13 in favour of the Greens. The u/15A girls held their own well and sent PHS packing with a 20-9 victory while their B-team lost by only five goals in a match that ended 13-18 in PHS’ favour. The u/16 teams showed similar results with the A-team winning their game by two goals with a score

of 26-24 and the B-team losing by 12-27. The u/17A girls received a bit of a hiding when PHS thrashed them by 34 goals to 1. The Second team managed to completely redeem themselves when they beat PHS by 20 goals to 14 in a very close game. Merensky’s First team struggled to find their rhythm on the day and had to concede defeat by 9 goals in a game that ended 17-28 in favour of the girls from Polokwane. The netball girls will now lick their wounds in preparation for the following league games against Ben Vorster which are set for later in June this year. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Eight of Laerskool Tzaneen’s under-13 rugby players are going to take part in the final trials for the Limpopo Rugby team. These trials were due to take place this past weekend but were postponed due to the rainy conditions. They will now take place on Friday, 19 May, in Polokwane. In the meantime, however, the under-12 trials were played last

week Friday. Two sports stars, Dirk de Nysschen and Letabo Kekana, were included into the practice group of 30 players. The final team will be decided on this Friday, 19May. De Nysschen also made the cut on the hockey field and was appointed as captain of the provincial team this past week (read that article on the left).

Thank you Grant Laerskool Tzaneen Primary takes sport as seriously as they do academics. A number of the Larrie teachers are qualified umpires and referees in their various sporting codes and therefore it is always a great privilege for the school when a goodhearted donation is made towards the promotion of their efforts. This week, Laerskool Tzaneen Primary wishes to thank one of their sponsors, Grant Kirkham of CGI tyres, who dressed the netball umpires in their new uniforms.

Merensky rugby goes international Merensky High has reason to boast this week. Following a very successful NTK Rugby Week hosted at their school during the April school break, 19 of this school’s players were selected by various scouts to be included into three different international teams who will participate in tours throughout the October school holidays.

“Any youngster dreams of going overseas. Many youngsters dream of being a part of a successful rugby team,” said Louis du Preez of Merensky High. “Combined, these two aspirations have now become a reality for our rugby boys.” In the u/19 side, Barend Lombard, JC le Grange, Kevin van den Bergh, Richard

Coleman, Martin Theunissen and Noko Malatji have the privilege of touring to Argentina while the u/16 team will be accompanied by Stefan Corbett, Garreth Spaumer, Victor Swan, Ruben Caroto and Keagan Scholtz. Another feather in Plasie rugby’s cap is the inclusion of eight u/15 players into the Danie

Rossouw touring side after attending the Danie Rossouw Rugby Week at Rob Ferreira High School in White River. These players, Tiaan Tönsing, Jan Naudé, Duan Gubitz, Dawie van Heerden, Danie Potgieter, Wikus Swart, WB Grobler and De Marco Meyer will tour the United Kingdom and fly the Merensky flag in London.

Anise Wiese, Megan Jardine, Angela Trzeciak, Anneline Rood and Mmakgomo Mashile.

A Disney themed affair was the order of the day along the passageways of the Santjie Swanepoel girls hostel at Merensky High last week Wednesday. It was the annual competition between the different passages in this hostel and it was, as is customary every year, an auspicious occasion. The grade 11

girls were responsible for the decorations according to the various Disney-movie themes. Judges were stunned by the creativity and originality on display as every passage had their very own unique character. It was however the F-middle passage with their Zootopia theme, who took the honours.

Pieties penalize Plasie keepers

Dezi Dreyer

Along with the rugby and netball games played this past weekend, Merensky’s boys and girls teams faced off against the Pietersburg High School squads on the hockey fields. Here, there were some uphill battles which ultimately resulted in Merensky boasting a single win for the boys teams on the day. The u/14 boys just could not hold onto the early tie in the first half when they matched the PHS score with a goal from John-Robert Honiball. By halftime, Merensky were trailing by one goal to two. The match continued but the second half proved that there was much work to be done in the Plasie camp and eventually they lost with a score of 1-5. When the u/15 boys took to the field it was evident they meant to reclaim some pride on

Kadin Albertus

the day when Benjamin Freitas opened the match with a stunning goal. His opener was followed moments later with another goal by the lightning quick Tiaan Viljoen. Merensky successfully held onto their 2-0 lead throughout the rest of the game to claim a victory for the boys in the blue. The Second team boys put up a valiant fight when they met their Polokwane counterparts later that day. The Merensky boys dominated at the Pieties goal area, but were unable to score. PHS scored a luck-shot goal in the last 4 minutes of the game to clench the match 1-0. In soaking wet conditions the First teams of both Merensky and PHS ran onto the pitch that afternoon to face off in the main game of the day. It was a tough battle for both sides with the pouring rain making stick control difficult. The Plasie boys lost the match by one goal to three, but it was by no means a walkover victory for the visitors. Samuel Modiba scored the only goal for the Plasies. On the fairer side of the hockey pitch, the

Plasie ladies were struggling with their very own battles as PHS lashed into them with relentless attacks at the goals. The u/14 teams lost their match 1-4 while the u/15 girls suffered a 3-0 defeat. The Second team also lost 3-0 while the First team conceded only a single goal to lose by 1-0. “It was obviously not an ideal weekend for us in Plasieland,” said Louis du Preez of Merensky High. “We are not afraid to admit that we received a hiding and that we have gained a lot from this encounter. We will now work on what needs to be worked on an ready ourselves for the next leg of the league games in Tzaneen in two weeks.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Plasies take bronze

BRONZE MEDAL WINNERS René Wiese and Anri McLean.

Merensky High attended the second leg of the 2017 cross country season in Polokwane last weekend. It was a Level 2 meeting which attracted more than 600 athletes from across the province to the grounds of HTS Tom Naude running club. Two of the eleven Merensky runners competed in the 4 kilometre events in their respective age groups and each returned home with a bronze medal for their efforts. In total, 11 Plasie athletes represented their school at the event. “Merensky is very proud to boast with such a strong cross country contingent at our school and we wish these runners the greatest success for the rest of the season,” said Louis Du Preez of Merensky High.

A Green defeat for MHS Last weekend the teams from Merensky faced off against the mighty PHS in a series of rugby, hockey and netball league games. Pietersburg High School have always been a force to be reckoned with for the local high schools and are known for their prowess on the sports fields. Merensky played well, but their opponents proved to be just too tough and sent the boys in blue back to the change rooms in defeat. Both the u/14 teams received a lashing with the A-team losing their match 46 points to 0 and the B-team managing just seven points in answer to the PHS score of 35. Similarly too, the u/15 teams suffered defeat at the hands of the Greens with the A-team game ending in a very close 8-10 defeat and the B-team receiving a 34-point lashing. It was the u/16 teams, however, who suffered the brunt of the PHS siege. The u/16A team lost their game 73-0 while their B-team was demolished in a walk-over 89-0 defeat. The three senior teams brought a lot more game to the party and although they too suffered defeats at the hands of the Green

Machine, they showed potential and managed to break through the opposition defences a number of times. The Third team lost by 7 points to 47 while the Second team scored two tries and converted one to lose that game 12-22. The First team game was very competitive and the teams seemed more evenly matched on the day. Noko Malatji and Richard Coleman each scored brilliant tries which were succesfully converted by Wynand Scholtz. Scholtz also sent a few penalty kicks over the cross bar to bring his team’s total to 15 points at the final whistle. It was a good performance but sadly not enough to prevent PHS from winning that encounter with a score of 25 points. Merensky is sure to have taken a number of pointers from this defeat in preparation for their coming league games against Ben Vorster in two weeks. Ben Vorster will first face PHS in the next leg of the league games. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
