Street hawkers like these guys, with their shanty stalls scattered along the R71, are a familiar sight to Tzaneen motorists. They have been a problem for years because of their absolute disregard for the law, and the municipality’s non-chalant approach to dealing with them. Thankfully, there now seems to be some form of closure to bring this problem to an end. Photo: Joe Dreyer

The illegal hawkers along the R71 have 14 days to vacate the area or be removed by South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) and the Provincial Traffic department. Notices were handed to them by officials of SANRAL on Thursday (yesterday) morning. The hawkers were not at all happy about the notices. “Why can’t SANRAL build us a place here where it is safe for the vehicles to pull over and support us? Now you chase us and just leave us like that?” Bulletin was at the scene when the notices were delivered and spoke to the provincial traffic chief, Victor Khumalo, about the situ-

ation. “It is time we start speaking the truth about what is going on here,” he said. “The R71 is a provincial road, not a municipal one. Therefore the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) has no jurisdiction over it, but still, they issue these illegal hawker permits to these people and tell them they are allowed to do business here. That, is not right.” Khumalo spoke out about another hot topic. “These traffic cameras the GTM has placed along this road is illegal. It is not legal because it is not their area of jurisdiction which means that the summons issued to motorists because of speeding caught on

these cameras, are not valid. You can verify that with the magistrate and you will see. How can the GTM send you a summons without a court date and then expect you to pay? It is wrong.” We asked some of the hawkers to produce their hawking permits. “I don’t know where it is right now, but tomorrow morning I will make sure to show it to you,” was one reply. “I don’t have one, but you see those ladies under the bridge? They have one and so if they can stand here, so can I,” said another vendor. Why did they choose the R71 to sell their goods? “Because in town there are too many

people selling, so how must I make a living?” Well, he will have to seek alternative means within the next 14 days or face the consequences. “We come and we remove their goods and keep it at the police station until they pay a fine to collect them again. If those goods perish, it is not our concern,” said Khumalo. “They steal these fruits and vegetables from the farmers. What happens when those farmers get angry and take the law into their own hands? The law is supposed to protect, not divide.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

A well-known professional hunter from the area was killed during an excursion in Zimbabwe. National and international media reported on the tragic hunting death of Theunis Botha (51) from Tzaneen. Known as Theuns Luiperd, Theunis was a professional big game hunter as well as a breeder of hunting dogs. He introduced the African Blue Hound into the K9 anti-poaching units. Theunis was with a group of hunters at

Good Luck farm in Gwayi near Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe on Friday 19th May. The hunters had gone for a walk at around 17:30 that afternoon when they suddenly came upon a breeding herd of elephants. Three elephant cows stormed the hunters and Theunis shot at them. A fourth cow stormed Theunis from the side and lifted him with her trunk.

One of the hunters then fatally shot the cow. As the cow collapsed, she fell on top of Theunis killing him. Theunis was a specialist at hunting leopards with his big game hounds. He’d been hunting for most of his life and paid for his own studies through his hunting. He had a degree in psychology and anthropology. Botha was a former pupil of Ben Vorster High in Tzaneen. His company Theunis Botha Big Game Safaris and Hounds, formed in 1980, catered for many wealthy clients from the USA. His wife, Carike, travelled to Zimbabwe on Monday to identify Theunis’ body at the Hwange Colliery Hospital mortuary. He will be remembered as an exceptional professional hunter and as a wonderful husband and father. Besides his wife, Theunis

leaves his five children Marike, Liza, Carmen, Yvonne and Theunis Jnr. Botha was the second South African professional game hunter to have died in Zimbabwe in the past two months. The first incident involved a close friend of his, Scott van Zyl (44), who went missing in April this year. It was reported that Van Zyl had been out on a hunting excursion with a group, when one of his hunting dogs went missing. Van Zyl allegedly went in search of the dog and never returned to camp. A search which lasted close on two weeks ended with the discovery of Van Zyl’s remains inside the bellies of three crocodiles shot by the Zimbabwean police on the banks of the Limpopo River. DNA testing confirmed that the remains belonged to Van Zyl.

Fire raises some serious questions The cause of a fire that destroyed the upper level of an office block in downtown Tzaneen yesterday, is still not certain. It is suspected, however, that the fire which broke out in the Wolkberg Centre in Danie Joubert Street, could have been caused by a group of prostitutes who allegedly operate a brothel in that building. The fire department received a call just after midnight and by 02:00, the fire had been contained. According to one of the neighbouring shopkeepers, the owner of a business renting an office in the Wolk-

berg building, had numerous altercations with these women. “Just yesterday he chased them away and said that they are bad for business and cannot operate in this building,” the neighbour said. “We have all chased them away before and then they threaten us, saying they will kill us.” Bulletin was at the scene with Letaba Alarms, Northern Security, Dave Protter and no less than three Tzaneen Fire Department trucks and their crew. “What we do know for certain at this stage is that it would appear as though the fire started right at the back of the building and spread forward,” said Vincent van der Westhuizen, Assistant Chief of Mopani Fire Department. “The roof of this building has been completely destroyed and the fire has damaged the walls and walkways too. The structural integrity of the building itself will have to be examined to determine the extent of the damage.”

We accompanied the fire crews into the building. The offices that were completely destroyed had been compartmentalized with dry-walling. The asbestos acted as fuel to the flames and caused an inferno which destroyed everything in its path. It appeared as though there were even people sleeping in the building as the remnants of what looked like beds were noticed among the smouldering ashes. The building was vacant at the time of the fire. At the time of going to print we had received no further information on the incident or the investigations into the cause of the blaze. We will follow up on the details as they become available. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin. us.com

Fire fighting crew members sifted through the smouldering debris for clues as to what sparked the fire.

Hippo evades the conservation bullet A young hippo bull was saved this week, allegedly after the department of Nature Conservation initially planned on destroying it. This emerged after Theo Retief, the owner of Dando Achar, in Tarentaalrand outside Tzaneen, became concerned over a hippo who had started destroying his young mango trees planted near the dam on the property. “The hippo has been living peacefully here with us for quite a while and in fact, we actually had a very good understanding between us,” explained Retief. “In the mornings I would drive up to the dam with my motorbike and rev the engine. The hippo would return my call by spewing large mouthfuls of water into the air. We carried on like this until it became our regular morning game.” All that changed a few weeks ago when one of his workers told him that a number of their young trees in the orchids had been destroyed by the animal. He investigated. “When I noticed the amount of damage that had been done, I decided that it would be best to either relocate or shoot the animal as it was now becoming a danger to my workers. I contacted Nature Conservation to get the necessary permits. Nature Conserva-

tion came to my property to do their inspections and said that they would destroy the animal themselves as they do not issue permits for that purpose anymore. Now, if shooting the hippo was my only resort, I would rather have done that myself, but I actually just want to move him to a safer area where he won’t place my workers in danger or destroy my livelihood.” Louise Joubert, the owner of Sanwild, a game reservation near Gravelotte, contacted Retief and offered to have the animal relocated. “There is absolutely no reason for this animal to be destroyed. We have had this type of problem a few times in the past where the easiest solution is sought, rather than try and solve the problem humanely.” Joubert could not take the hippo to her personal reserve as she already houses a pair and the introduction of another bull would only cause a problem. Joubert contacted renowned game capturers, Anita and Andre Pienaar of Parawild Game Capture, for assistance. The Pienaars submitted an application to relocate the animal at the department of Nature Conservation. “A permit takes roughly 14 days to approve. Once the approval is given, we erect electric fencing around the dam to enclose the animal.

A steel boma is erected and molasses is left in the boma every day over the course of a few weeks. The animal becomes at ease feeding in the boma and we then eventually lock the gate behind it – like a cage basically. The animal is then transported to a sanctuary willing to accept it.” In this instance a hippo breeding farm outside Polokwane has confirmed that they would accept the hippo at their facility. For now, the hippo remains at Dando Achar until the permits have been granted. Bulletin has tried to get official comment from the department of Nature Conservation on the reason for their decision to destroy the animal, but our enquiries turned up empty. We also sought clarity on rumours that rangers at the department were being offered bribes for the meat of the animals (specifically hippos) and that this is the reason why permits were being refused. We have not been able to prove these allegations, but have contacted the department’s spokesperson, Burkels Napo, for comment. We will follow up on this matter in our next edition. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Cops have to use private vehicles to respond The SAPS K-9 unit in Politsi has no transport. In fact, this unit which services the entire province with only two trained dogs, has been without transport for more than two months. It has come to light that four of the six vehicles allocated for use by the Politsi unit, were written off by SAPS HQ without replacements. This left the station with only two vehicles – a Ford Ranger, and a VW Amarok. Our source revealed that these vehicles were both sent in for scheduled maintenance two months ago. The Ford Ranger had been booked in for a service at the SAPS workshop, which took three weeks to complete. When the vehicle returned to the station, the oil warning light remained illuminated and it was sent to a number of engineering workshops for inspection.

The problem was found by one engineering firm, but they were unable to repair the vehicle as they were asked to produce a BEE certificate. Bulletin has the name of the engineering firm in question and will contact them for comment. The Ford is apparently still at their premises. Similarly, the VW Amarok was booked for a service at the SAPS workshop. Afterwards it was taken to a vehicle fitment centre in town. When the vehicle was returned, there was a noise on the motor which was not previously evident. Following inspections by various engineering firms, it was estimated that the vehicle would require R68 000 worth of mechanical repairs. That vehicle is still parked at an engineering workshop.

For the last two months the police officers from the Politsi K-9 unit have been using their own private vehicles to serve the communities within their province. They have been successful in the apprehension of a number of criminals and played a vital role in the arrests of three Pangolin poachers in Tzaneen earlier this month. It was alleged that there is only one supplier of spare parts to the South African Police Service for use in their vehicles in the entire country. That supplier is situated in Port Elizabeth. Bulletin contacted the provincial spokesperson of the SAPS, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe for comment. He said that he was not aware of the situation, but that he will follow up

and get back to us. We then tried to contact Genl Hankins from SAPS Headquarters in Polokwane who is allegedly responsible for the distribution and recalling of vehicles throughout the province. We had no answer. As a last resort we contacted Genl Maggie Mathebula in Tzaneen. Although she was aware of the plight of the Politsi Unit, she was unable to speak to the media and referred us back to Ngoepe. Is it fair to expect an entire unit to be without transport in order to service a community for a period exceeding two months? Does the safety of the public not rank high enough on the priority list, or is there a valid explanation for this unacceptable situation? — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Greetings in the Name of Christ! Religion is one big question! Everyone queries it, is it just another type of entertainment or does it truly have meaning? There are many different types of religion, some good and some bad depending on your personal preference. It is your choice, I cannot make you believe in the religion I have chosen for myself. One needs to examine carefully all the facts about a specific religion before making a decision as which one to follow. Most importantly one needs to have faith. Unfortunately, too many the Christian faith has lost its impact. People are choosing to go it alone. Many believe that the church has lost its way and therefore they need not to attend it. So where does the “community of all believers” have a place in their lives. Where do they get a different interpretation of a Bible passage from? The internet? Who wrote these interpretations, was it some guru or the other or did it come from God? I believe that in attending church one will get a special message, a message meant just for them at some point in time. Many of the youth are searching for answers to the question of faith, so how do you as a believer assist them in their quest? Many have said “I don’t have to attend church to be a Christian” which in itself can be true, but then their faith must be so strong that they can believe it is the Holy Spirit that is guiding them. Where do they go when they feel spiritually weak, when their faith takes a knock due to something happening in their lives? We all need the support of others who are like minded, but do we get it? I believe that families fall apart because of modern day living, where it is much easier to fall into the ways of the world and become blaze about their faith. Don’t get me wrong when I say that I query their motives, it is just that I believe that God our Father wanted us to live in a community and not alone. To be a follower of Jesus means that we need to step out in faith, to love one another no matter how hard it may be. We need others to build on our faith, we cannot do it alone.

The story behind the lake The headlines of two 1941 Limpopo province newspaper reports read “Big-Game Hunter Drowned in a dam” and “Tragic Accident at Stanford’s lake”. Seventy-year-old Harley Daly Maurice Stanford died in icy waters in his own lake on 8th January 1941. He built the lake because he loved fishing. He died in the lake because he loved fishing. Harley was born in France on 2nd July 1871. He came to the Cape as a child but was educated at Dulwich College near London. He was a tax collector in the Pilansberg area and

then lived in Haenertsburg from 1911-1924. His nickname, Intabalen, meant “the one to be looked up to” because he was usually on horseback. He retired to his farm Good Hope. He built the dam, fed by a stream, during the Depression. He used donkeys, picks, spades and white labour. He’d told the Department of Irrigation that he was saving the country water. He was, in fact, building it for his other passion, fishing. Fishermen came from Polokwane to fish in Stanford’s lake.

Professor Louis Changuion at Harley Stanford’s memorial.

One day, almost a year later, two guests wanted to go fishing on his lake. He let them have his fishing boat. Once they were out on the water, Harley couldn’t resist the temptation to join them. He instructed his manservant, Mossea Sehwana, to fetch the old canvas canoe. They’d just reached the middle of the lake when the old canoe sprung a leak. Mossea began swimming. Harley, who was an excellent swimmer, was just behind him. Harley loved his rod, so held it aloft, as he didn’t want it to get wet. Mossea turned around and saw that Harley was in difficulty and shouted for help. The guests came paddling frantically. It was too late. Badgers win annual derby It was time for the annual Stanford Lake-St Dunstan’s Derby this past weekend and this year the mighty Honey Badgers travelled to Benoni. As per tradition, the colleges alternate annually travelling between the provinces to compete in the derby. As was the case last year, some top class rugby was on display for local enthusiasts who filled the stands to egg on their tog-wearing heroes. The Stanford Lake u/15 rugby team fell short of their usual flair on the day and despite being the dominant team on the field, were held to a 10-all draw by the visitors. The same was evident when the Second

team bowed in defeat to the St Dunstan’s boys which left redemption up to the Badgers who faced their opponents later that afternoon in the main event. From the kick-off the teams swapped territorial control until some clever tactics by the host-forwards wore down the Dunstan’s defensive line and sent the Badgers over the try line. The backs showed great passing down the line to utilize their space effectively and make use of their super-fast wingers. When the final whistle blew, Stanford boasted a 19-3 victory to remain derby champions for another year.

Raga Bolo now enters finals

Photos by Joe Dreyer

Street soccer is in full swing in Limpopo after the third leg of the Smirnoff Raga Bolo 2017 tournament entered its semi-final rounds this weekend. The tournament is divided into regions across the country and Polokwane shares the Inland North division with the teams from Nelspruit. Every alternate weekend a round is played at both venues. The points are then tallied and the two teams with the highest scores (based on a point-pergoal and win system) in each region will faceoff for the top spot. That team then travels to Gauteng to play in the national final which carries a R150 000 cash prize for the winner. Last year, the Polokwane-based Mum’s Tavern made it to the national semi-final, but were outplayed in the final game of their tour to

bring home the bronze. It would seem as though Mum’s are intent on winning this year’s instalment of the action-packed tournament as they have already taken up their post at the top of the log and now ready themselves to face the Nelspruit winner at month-end. Although the team has remained relatively unchanged, they now play under the name “Plaza Liquor Restaurant”. Runner’s up in this year’s tournament, Belinda’s Tavern, almost managed an upset this weekend when they held the favourites to a draw. The sport has grown in its popularity over the last three years and every weekend attracts large numbers of spectators. Each year, a tavern (which sells Smirnoff products) is chosen

to host the games in each of the regions which adds an element of surprise to the games as players never know where the games will be hosted until a week before match day. The game is played on small, makeshift, courts and often includes immovable objects such as large rocks and tree stumps which makes up part of the playing area. Players play around these obstacles, against walls and up onto ledges and verandas between the spectators. “Skill, speed and control on any surface! That is what street soccer is all about!” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Mixed derby results for SLC Stanford’s hockey teams managed to secure some mixed results during their siege on Benoni this past weekend. It was the annual Stanford-St Dunstan’s derby and both the boys and girls teams spent their season prelims preparing for this match up. The boys teams results showed just how evenly matched the two schools were when they met on the opposite sides of the astro. Two of the four matches ended in draws. The u/14 game ended in a very close victory for the hosts when they beat Stanford with a score of 2-1 while the Stanfordian u/15’s exacted their revenge with a very impressive 3-0 pummelling of the Gauteng Greens. The second team held their opponents to a one goal draw. The First team game was a seesaw affair

between the halves as St Dunstan completely dominated the opening half heading into the break with a one-goal lead. The Stanfordians mustered up their reserve to show great skill in the second half and score a late goal to draw the game a goal a piece. The Lake Ladies had a less than favourable result despite some good efforts and a few impressive displays in their opponents’ half. Of the four teams that played on the day, three bowed in defeat and only the First team managed a goalless draw. The u/15 girls lost their game 3-0 while the u/16 suffered a 4-0 loss. The Second team played well, but in the end had to be content with a 1-0 defeat. This weekend will see Stanford Lake play host to Beaulieu College from Kayalami in what is seen as the last of the derby matches before the start of the exams. Ear-

lier this week, on Monday, both the u/15 and the First team girls played against the teams from Louis Trichardt and both teams scored a 2-1 victory. A date to save for local hockey lovers is Wednesday, 31 May, when the teams from Merensky High will travel to the Lake to face the might of Stanford on the pitch. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
