A hawking good spin
The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) has managed to spin their way out of responsibility once again. A month ago, we published the first article on the illegal street hawkers trading next to the R71 national road which runs through Tzaneen, past the Lifestyle Centre. At the time, the GTM acknowledged the problem, but claimed that they could not interfere or remove the traders as the R71 was a national road, outside their jurisdiction. “It is a SANRAL problem”, they said. A week later, we spoke to Provincial Traffic Chief, Victor Khumalo. According to him, the hawkers along the R71 were allegedly given permission illegally by someone within the GTM, to trade along this busy road. He also said that the traffic cameras erected by the GTM to trap speeding motorists were not legal as the road does not fall within the GTM’s jurisdiction and they therefore were not permitted to trap there. “Speak to the magistrate to confirm this and you will see the truth,” he said. The GTM’s spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, responded last
week saying that the hawkers were a problem which the municipality would solve through the help of their law enforcement officers. He even provided a deadline. “We have not approved or issued any permit to any hawker to operate on the R71 road, or any national or provincial road,” said Ndlala. “If you are privy to such information or the existence of such permits, you can provide us with such evidence. With regard to addressing the hawkers challenges, our law enforcement has a planned programme to be implemented from the 14th of June 2017. Next week they will be conducting road blocks. The programme will include the removal of illegal hawkers and confiscation of illegal goods.” Bulletin approached Ndlala on Wednesday morning during a protest action at the municipal offices and asked him whether the GTM was still on track for the removal of the hawkers. “No, not the hawkers on the R71, that is not our jurisdiction and it is a SANRAL problem. I was referring to the hawkers in the centre of town,” he said. Ndlala also said that he is in possession of a very lengthy document which
Who will be our Cover Girl? See more on page 7
contains proof of the legitimacy of the R71 traffic cameras, and that he would hand Bulletin a copy in due course. “It is a very lengthy document and too big to send via email so I will be more than happy to give you a hardcopy.” His response seemed contradictory to his official comment a week earlier. In our media enquiry, we made reference specifically to the R71 hawkers. Why would Ndlala issue a response referring to an entirely different matter altogether, when the subject matter was stated very clearly? Where will the GTM be conducting road blocks, if not on any of the national roads leading into town and how will these affect the local taxi associations’ operations in the CBD? There does not seem to be any clarity as to who is responsible for the policing of the R71 and how, or when these illegal traders will be removed. This despite them having been issued with eviction notices from SANRAL exactly two weeks ago yesterday. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Certain mushrooms are known to be medicinally beneficial. There is no academic research available in Western medicine but the health benefits of mushrooms were noted aeons ago in both Chinese and Japanese traditional medicine writings. Both culinary and medicinal mushrooms will be produced. Currently oyster mushrooms are looking good in one of the greenhouses. There are king, grey and blue oyster mushrooms with pink oyster mushrooms being introduced soon. The process takes four weeks with two of those weeks waiting for colonisation. The interior has to be kept humid and wet with a moderate temperature. Gas heating is used in winter to keep the temperature up. The mushrooms being cultivated for medicinal use are Shitake, Reishi, Maitake, Turkey Tail and Lion’s Mane. Shitake, Maitake and Lion’s Mane also have culinary uses whereas Reishi and Turkey Tail, with their corky taste, are strictly for medicinal purposes. These mushrooms grow on oak chips and are dried for medicinal use. Louise says that mushroom tea with a dash of honey is ideal. The mush-

rooms have to be heated as this breaks down the cells to release the medicinal properties. The medicinal mushrooms are ingested for cancer, diabetes and HIV. Lion’s Mane contains a molecule that rebuilds the myelin sheath around the neurons and can regenerate brain tissue. These mushrooms boost the immunity and have NKC (Natural Killer Cells). In other words they target and kill, for example, cancer cells. Should cancer patients elect to undergo chemotherapy or radiation, mushrooms are a support structure for these treatments. Besides the mushroom nursery, the Trust is also growing essiac, a combination of four cancer busting herbs. They are rhubarb root, burdock root, sheep sorrel and slippery elm bark. The operation is overseen and run by four young Limpopo hippies living in Native American teepees on the property. They live totally off the grid as well as plant and harvest their own food.

Black smoke envelops town
A plume of black smoke billowed from a point beyond the fire brigade near Unicorn Preparatory School Thursday afternoon. Security guards at the fire station said it was the illegal burning of tyres. This was the third such incident in as many months. Bulletin has since identified the location where heaps of tyres are frequently being disposed of in this illegal fashion. “It is in the section of field behind the Medipark extension,” said Jaco Rautenbach, a volunteer LFPA fire fighter. “The problem is that the Tzaneen Fire Department cannot respond to the fire as it is not a structural fire and in reality not a danger to any of the nearby homes.” The ground on which these tyres are being burned, belongs to the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) and not a private landowner. The only logical explanation it would seem, is that
one of the many tyre traders in town is using this patch of open land to dispose of the used tyres cheaply rather than drive out to the Tzaneen Waste Disposal site on the Agatha Road. The smoke which a burning tyre emits is tens of thousands of times more toxic than the gasses emitted when you burn coal. These toxins have been associated with miscarriages, cancers and birth defects. They cause eczema, respiratory problems and allergies. “Who is dumping here, and when they are doing so, should be investigated. The perpetrators, when caught, should be fined heavily as it is against the law.” Under section 46 of the National Environmental Management Act no 107 of 1998, a model air quality bylaw was drafted for the adoption and adaptation by municipalities to deal with pollution in their areas of jurisdiction. According to
chapter 2, section 14 of this act, no person may carry out or permit the burning of any tyres, rubber products, cables or any other products on any land or premises for the purposes of recovering the scrap metal or fibre reinforcements, or of the disposing of tyres as waste. In 2009, the City of Cape Town promulgated a bylaw making the burning of vehicle tyres illegal after a decades’ long battle against the practice. According to that bylaw, it is an offense to be found in possession of the recovered metal from burnt tyres. Scrapyards who buy the metal from vehicle tyres could face up to two years in prison. Bulletin searched through the bylaws on the GTM’s website and could not find anything related to this burning issue. We have sent an enquiry to their communications department and will follow up on the matter in our next edition.

LFPA ready for #2017fireseason
The large group of delegates from the local fire and farming communities who attended the LFPA’s informative Practical Incident Command Course on Friday, 2nd of June. The event was held at the LFPA base on the grounds of Wesfalia just outside Tzaneen.
At the start of the 2017 fire season the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) along with their base partners, Working on Fire (WOF), have jumped into gear and are readying themselves to respond to anticipated veld fire threats in the area. In order to streamline their efforts, and create a better understanding of how the organization responds to veld fires, LFPA held a very informative Practical Incident Command Course on Friday, 2nd of June. The course was open to the media and members of the farming community and was very well attended. The day’s
proceedings started with an introduction to the incident management team, the pilots and LFPA’s management team. Delegates were divided into groups and offered courses on the prevention of fires and educated on the processes employed by LFPA in the event of a veld fire emergency. One of the highlights of the day’s proceedings was the sand table demonstration. During this demonstration, a scaled model of the terrain between Tzaneen and Modjadjiskloof was modelled from sand. Different coloured lengths of wool represented the R71, dirt roads and dams in the area while red wool was used to create a mock fire. LFPA Chairperson, Trevor Phillips, re-enacted an actual veld fire situation using model airplanes, trucks and helicopters in order to show delegates exactly what happens during a veld fire and how the efforts of the various responders and crews
are orchestrated. The day also served a different purpose for Maritza Swanepoel, LFPA Public Relations Officer and Administrator, who used the time to put together a logistics team of her own. The team comprised of six women, hand-picked from strategic locations across the area, who possess skills and knowledge valuable to the LFPA team. These ladies spent the morning in training with Swanepoel to establish an airtight communications network which will prove vital during emergencies. The day reached its conclusion with the handing over of top-of-the-range fire jackets to a handful of volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to fighting fires alongside the professional LFPA crews. The jackets were sponsored by the LFPA and Rotary Tzaneen, and handed over in a brief ceremony to the volunteers before all delegates were treated to a lunch and social. The fire jackets were a “top-up” following on the 30 fire jackets which were sponsored to the fire fighters by Coke in 2015. The new recruits who did not receive jackets initially, were now equipped as well. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
These were the recipients of the LFPA fire jackets. Xaveir Chitagu, Jaco Rautenbach, Fanie Venter, Rouan Snyman, Ricardo Terblanche, Hans van Schalkwyk, Dorothy Mokoetlana, Ferdinand van Loggerenberg and Frikkie Engelbrecht. Not in attendance on the day was Andre Venter, Werner Basson, Jaco Meintjies, Carl Theunissen, Jan van Schalkwyk, Jimmy Mthethwa.

Eerste Wolkbergfees ‘n sukses
— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin. us.com

Veteran laid to rest The 74-year old man who was found dead in his vehicle on Saturday in Flora Park, will be laid to rest this morning. The service for former Rhodesian war veteran, Hendrik Strydom (74), will be held at the Lagos church in Tzaneen. Strydom leaves behind his children, grandchildren and great children. The circumstances surrounding his death are still not certain and police investigations are still underway. Evidence gathered thus far strongly suggest that Strydom was murdered by unknown assailants. He was discovered in the cab of his Isuzu. The driver’s side window had been smashed open and a brick was found next to him on the seat. The police initially reported that the brick could have been the murder weapon. At the time of going to print, no further information was available.

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Greetings in the Name of Christ! Last Sunday was Pentecost Sunday, when we recall the fact that Christ gave His disciples the power of the Holy Spirit. As this Spirit ascended on them they began to preach in tongues. Today, people profess to speaking in tongues, yet although I do believe that God does give some the power to do so I doubt that all of these people really have this power. Another form of spreading the Gospel is by word of mouth and by prayer. I have always believed that prayer is one of the most powerful tools against the evil forces. I was honoured to join a group of bikers, the Tzaneen Roadhogs, even if it was for a brief encounter with them at the Showgrounds. They were on what was known as the Jericho run. An event in which they start off at one point, this one being Magoebaskloof Dam and pray over the place, with a specific purpose, although I am not sure, I assume it was for the blessing that God gave us to fill the dams. At the Showgrounds, the home of Agri-Letaba, they prayed for all workers and job security. They then moved on towards Tzaneen Country Lodge, I unfortunately, had to leave them. But at the Showgrounds I got the feeling that they were truly doing what Jesus had instructed them to do and that was to ask Him for anything. I truly believe that God heard their humble requests and that the Holy Spirit was moving amongst them and with them on their journey to give Him praise and glory. How active are you in praying, or do you just leave it to others to do? We are in a time of trial in this country and need everyone to get down on their knees and pray. If you feel that it is not working then pray some more. Rest assured God has heard every one of our prayers and He will answer them according to our needs. Test your faith by joining other like-minded people in prayer and bring about change in our beautiful country, pray like never before for believe it we are in crisis mode. Blessings.

Far North Media in partnership with Limpopo Beauty Modelling Academy, launched the Far North Bulletin Cover Girl 2017 competition last week. Sixteen girls entered for a chance to be featured on the front page of the Bulletin and generate massive exposure for their modelling careers. The competition is open to girls between the ages of 4 and 26 years old residing within the Mopani District. The contestants each had a free photoshoot courtesy of Bulletin’s Joe Dreyer, on Wednesday afternoon. Their portraits will be live on Bulletin and Limpopo Beauty’s Facebook pages in order
for our readers to cast their vote. The voting works on a one-like, one-vote system and the girl with the most votes in each category will be awarded a prize. The overall winner will be featured on the front page of our 30th of June publication. Voting will start today and close on the 27th of June after which the votes will be tallied. In addition to appearing on the front page as the new Far North Bulletin Cover Girl, the overall winner will also walk away with a professional studio photoshoot to assist in building a professional modelling portfolio. — Joe Dreyer

A short history of Modjadjiskloof After the Anglo Boer War the number of white people in the northern Transvaal increased slightly until there were about 2 000 by 1910. Most of the people in the Lowveld, lived around the farms of Schraalhans and Duivelskloof. There were about 140 families there, mainly farmers. The post office was at Duivelskloof. The reason for the name Duivel is lost to history but one likely explanation was that it was a devilish road for transport drivers on rainy and muddy days. In 1912 the long awaited railway line from Komatipoort reached the Letaba River. The station was named Tzaneen. Then the railway line continued to a station that was named Modjadji in 1914. The town of Duivelskloof was proclaimed in 1919. In that year, the old world 20-roomed hotel, the Duivelskloof Hotel, later named Imp Inn, was built. The eye-catching red and white logo of an imp with his trident
in his hand was created by Mrs Dawn Bowman of Tzaneen. Somewhere along the years Duivelskloof changed its name to Duiwelskloof and the town was renamed Modjadjiskloof in 2004. The Duiwelskloof Hospital was opened in 1922 due to the prevalence of malaria, a deadly disease in those days. The hospital closed down a few years ago. Modjadjiskloof, in its day, was the hub of the agricultural world producing fine timber, vegetables and fruit. Today it totters on the brink of ruin due to poorly run services and no maintenance of infrastructure • Extracts are taken from Professor Louis Changuion’s unpublished manuscript on the town of Modjadjiskloof. The previous government tasked Professor Changuion with the historic narration of the town. However, before it could go to print, the new government took over and set other priorities for expenditure. The gabled Town Council building 1922. Subsequently demolished.

En so klink ‘n ATKV-silwer

Badgers match up to Plasies The teams from Merensky and Stanford Lake College took a break from their midwinter exams last week to face off on the hockey fields. The Stanfordian Honey Badgers played host to the Blue Brigade in what would be an extraordinary season finale. The two neighbours from the outskirts of Tzaneen are both formidable on the pitch and have, in the past, shown that they can defend those titles ferociously against even the toughest schools in the province. Just last week the teams from Merensky proved their mettle when they mauled Ben Vorster in their league encounter. In the first game of the day, the Second Team boys crossed sticks in a rollercoaster encounter which eventually saw the visiting Plasies put three past the Badger-keeper to win the match by 3 goals to 1. Kieran Albertus, Delux Jooste and John-D Ball were the Plasie-strikers who sealed their host’s fate. Unperturbed, the Badgers hit back hard to claim a 0-1 victory in the u/14 Boys encounter, a 0-1 win over the Plasie First team and a very close 3-2
victory in the u/15 encounter. It was nothing short of an epic clash when, at almost full time, the u/15 teams were locked in a 2-all draw. Through perseverance and unrivalled determination, the Badgers struck in the dying moments of the game to take the win. Later that day during the girls’ encounter, the visiting u/16 team had to make up for lost ground following the defeat of all but one of their boys’ teams. Meghan MacNicol, Jenelle de Jonge, Jamie van der Merwe and Zoe Kader stepped up to the plate and ensured a fantastic 5-0 win for Merensky. Michaela Dale was named player of the match. The Second Ladies repeated the performance and chalked up a decent 2-1 victory while the u/15’s concede a 1-2 defeat. The senior ladies took to the pitch in the afternoon highlight. Both teams were evenly matched with neither willing to give a single metre worth of possession to their opponents. After 90 minutes of some of the most intense hockey displayed this season,
the Laker Ladies edged a goal past the visitor’s goal herder to claim a 1-0 victory. The students will now put away their hockey gear in preparation for their mid-terms. Players from both schools, however, will meet again in July when they take to the pitch as team mates for the provincial tournaments. - Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Ben Vorster’s First XV reaffirmed their dominance on the rugby fields last weekend when they ended their Limpopo League play-offs as unbeaten. This came after their victory over longtime Polokwane rivals, PHS, in an FNB Classic Clashes match in Tzaneen on Saturday. The junior teams’ games delivered a mixed bag of results for the hosts with both u/14 teams bowing in defeat to the better prepared visitors. The u/15A-team recovered well from their 10-20 defeat suffered at the hands of Merensky the weekend before, by winning their game 45-0 on the day. Similarly too, their B-team won their match 31-15 while the u/16’s had to settle for a 10-29 loss. Ben Vorster’s Third and Second teams chalked up decent wins with scores of 27-24 and 24-14 respectively to set the table for the main course – the First Team clash. From the get-go it was clear that neither side would offer the other even a smidgen of breathing room. The teams were mentally and physically matched. PHS capitalized early in the first half with the opening try, but was answered
moments later by Vossies centre-half, Heini Ferreira, who returned the favour with a beautiful try to settle the score. Attacks by both sides were met with equally ferocious counters and airtight defence. Eventually a PHS high-mast kick was intercepted by Vossie-fly half, Erik Meintjies, on the halfway line, who found the gap in their defences and darted over for an exciting try. Only eight minutes remained in the first half when Ben Vorster formed a ruck on the visitors’ try line and marched Nyiko Ntempo over for a fiver. That try was matched by an equally impressive run six minutes later by the PHS backline to end the first half 15-12 in favour of the mighty reds. At their return from the locker rooms, the teams seemed even more determined and started the second half in much the same fashion as the first. Neither one seemed able to gain the upper hand with both teams quickly adding two more tries each to their scores. Ben Vorster converted both while PHS managed only one conversion. With the scores stuck on 29-24 and
the time racing towards the final whistle, Ben Vorster turned up the heat sending Melvin Maake over the line for two more tries. Minutes after that, Shima Molepe answered with a third. PHS showed great reserve and fought back hard to score a try in the dying seconds of the game. It was too little, too late though and Ben Vorster won the game 41-29 to remain unbeaten in their 2017 league season. “We are very proud of what our boys have accomplished through the season,” said headmaster Chris Denysshen. “Well done boys, you have truly made us proud.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
