Dzuni Mathevula turns 17 this year. She was only 3 years old when social workers placed her in the care of Sylvie and her husband, Remi Delsouiller. They are the founders of the Noah’s Ark Children’s Home, an orphanage just outside Tzaneen. Currently, Dzuni is working her way through high school at one of the region’s most prominent schools, after which she hopes to become a social worker herself. She shares a home with another 17-year old, Reineth Maila, who attends the same high school. She wants to be a magistrate one day. They are the oldest of the close on 50 children living at Noah’s Ark and chances are that they will leave one day soon to follow their dreams. “It is always a sad affair for us when our children have to leave home to fend for themselves,” said mom Sylvie. “These are our children and maternal instinct will always want to keep them where we can protect and guard them.” The Delsouiller’s are originally from France and came to South Africa around two decades ago when they started the children’s home at the Christian centre, Alon. When the need arose for more space to house the influx of children, the couple left Alon and bought the piece of land opposite Venbeck they currently operate from. Every morning Remi drives the kids to school, and each afternoon he fetches them again. Noah’s Ark pays their tuition fees and have just recently added a brand new crèche, with a teacher, to their property to make it easier for the pre-schoolers. Being a non-profit organization, Noah’s Ark relies solely on the government grants they receive per child and donations from the community.

“The government grants are not much and have remained the same for a few years now,” explained Remi. “Some months the government doesn’t pay the grants at all and that, as you can imagine, places us in a very difficult spot.” Remi expressed their gratitude towards the Tzaneen community for the monthly donations of food and clothing they receive. He said they even receive toys. A number of businesses help out where they can with paint and other donations too, but currently, they have a serious need for financial assistance. The grants total only R2 500 per child, per month, up until the age of 18, when those grants abruptly stop. It may sound like a lot, but when you factor in the 2 000 nappies and the large quantities of baby formula they have to purchase every month, the picture looks rather grim. The problem with the age limit of 18 years, is that some of the children never went to school before they arrived at the Delsouiller’s and will therefor turn 18 while in the middle of their high school years. “What do we do then? We cannot be expected to kick these girls out on the street where they stand a very high chance of being trafficked into prostitution or worse. But the system is the system and we have to find ways to make it work.” If you are in a position to donate clothing, blankets, books or toys, feel free to deliver your donation package to the offices of Far North Media in Hospital Street. Once a week we will deliver all the collections to the home. For those able to contribute financially, please contact Sylvie on 082-573-8383 or via email at

noahsarkch@gmail.com. For any further information visit their website at www.noahsarkchildrenshome.org.za. Every child at Noah’s Ark has a story. Some were abandoned at birth and others were removed from abusive homes and placed here for their own safety. But all of them remember that they once had parents and that somewhere, something happened. If the ark has managed only thing successfully, it would be the restoration of faith in humanity. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

What a coincidence!

The road crew hard at work using instant mix to patch the surface of Boundary Street.

After months of pleading, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) has finally decided to heed the public’s call and patch the disintegrated road surface of Boundary Street. This street is one of the most used roadways in town as it connects the major pre-, primary and high schools in the area with the CBD. It has deteriorated to such an extent that motorists have sought alternative routes to school in the mornings which resulted in heavy congestion in Peace, Park and King Edward streets. Following a hefty battle with the GTM and weekly reports on their failure to step up to their mandate and fix the roads within their

jurisdiction, motorists have started noticing the difference. Boundary Street had, for some odd reason, been overlooked as the rest of the roads in the CBD and neighbourhoods around the schools were patched first. On Tuesday morning at 09:00, we went to Boundary Street and photographed various sections of the affected road for yet another article pleading for its restoration. Not 30 minutes later a municipal road crew suddenly appeared and started patch work. It is not clear why they suddenly arrived on the scene, coincidentally at the very moment we were conducting investigations there. We

Photograp hs taken o f Boun maintenan ce team m dary Street, before the road iraculousl y arrived on site.

asked one of the crew members who said that someone had called them. Who? While the workmanship is shoddy at best, and will possibly only outlast the winter season, at least Tzaneen motorists can now once again use Boundary Street for their daily commute. You might need to reprogram the GPS though, as it might now be named Colander Street. An even more serious concern is the municipality’s absolute disregard of the two massive sinkholes along Agatha Road which we reported on in August 2016 for the first time, and twice more since. No response was given

to any enquiries sent to the GTM on the matter and nothing has been done at either of the two sites. When three people died in an accident because of one of these sinkholes, a year ago, it was thought that they might spring into action, but alas, nothing. It is as if those sinkholes don’t exist. Perhaps three more lives need to be lost to kick-start the reparation process? — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Adults learn Sepedi Charlie Ramohlola (33) from Mankweng, a Jack-of-all-trades, has turned his hand to teaching elementary Sepedi to adults living in the Haenertsburg area. Charlie is employed at Blueberry Heights, outside the village, as a supervisor on the farm. He’s been there almost a decade. He helps during the picking season, is foreman at the workshop where he maintains the tractors, bakkies and power tools and he’s in charge of the general maintenance of electricity and plumbing. Charlie studied electrical engineering at FET in Tzaneen. He only did his N1 to N3 and had to drop out of N4 due to financial constraints. He worked for the late Dudley Humphreys from George’s Valley as his personal driver. Dudley was battling cancer and when the pain became unbearable Dudley flew to Dignitas in Switzerland where assisted dying is legal. Then Charlie moved to Johannesburg and worked for a Mrs Nkona. He electrified RDP houses in Zagarea Park south of the city and left after three months as he did not receive any payment. Jonathan Trusler, Manager of Blueberry Farm, was finding it hard not understand-

ing his Sepedi farm hands. Charlie in his soft-spoken perfect English, thanks to the educators at Thusanang, says, “We had a meeting up at Jonathan’s house. There we decided that the Mountain Café restaurant on the property would be an ideal venue for me to teach Jonathan and other interested parties Sepedi. We chose Mondays and Tuesdays as the restaurant is closed those days. “ He started the 10 lesson course with 20 adult students. Eight dropped out as they admitted they hadn’t practiced after each lesson and got lost in the process. Four students practiced diligently and can now understand Sepedi. Sepedi is part of Sotho and Tswana and forms the biggest language group in South Africa. Sepedi has tenses just like in English. The language has also borrowed heavily from the Afrikaans language. For example a chair or ‘stoel’ in Afrikaans is ‘setolo’ in Sepedi. The Afrikaans word for mother is ‘ma’ and in Sepedi it’s ‘mma.’ Charlie says, “My parents are illiterate. They attended one of Karin Boyum’s literacy courses but dropped out as it was just too difficult for them. I have always helped them

with their language difficulties and either translate English into Sepedi for them or read to them in Sepedi to help them.” He’s had three major events recently and hopes that life will now deal him better cards. He had a car accident, followed by cutting off a finger digit with one of the power tools and then experienced the devastating loss of his only child, his three-year-old daughter Tsego, almost two months ago. She’d contracted pneumonia and this led to bouts in various hospitals including Tzaneen MediClinic and Letaba Hospital. Tsego was then admitted to the Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria where she died of a serious heart condition. “The Headmaster at Stanford Lake College, Craig Carolan, wants me to teach Sepedi to his teachers starting in August.” Charlie learnt, from this elementary course,

Charlie Ramohlola.

that many people find it really hard to learn another language. He went back to grass root level books for this Sepedi course while still keeping up with reading English books and newspapers.

Blankets for winter

The villagers have come to the party again, and this time they made it just before winter. Haenertsburg Rotary Club held a fantastic initiative to collect as many blankets as possible for those who do not have means to stay warm this winter. These blankets were donated to the students of Appel School in Georges Valley this week. Seen here are the members of Haenertsburg Rotary with the principal of the school, Mr Fieland Malapane, and his Grade 9 students.

The Machimana Family Society was formed in 1986. To date, this society has more than R130 000 in various investment and savings accounts which it utilizes to assist family members during funerals, parties, weddings and unveiling. There are other family societies within the community, Rikhotso, Mushwana, Maponta and many others who are like the Machimanas. Together, their savings run into millions of Rands. They could be more creative and create cooperatives out of these voluntary associations, they just need the right ideas through innovative people within their membership. This could assist in growing the economy within Greater Tzaneen Municipality. “We have the capital, but it is a territory that needs to be explored,” explained Cassius Machimana. “These are organs of civil society which can contribute positively in bringing back the moral fibre in our communities.”

Plakkers

Sulke advertensies is nutteloos. Party is soos... Hy was ‘n nikswerd koning wat nooit woord by daad kon sit nie.

The portraits have since been published over social media and the public was asked to vote for their favourite in each category. The winners of the various age groups will receive a prize, Charline Colbourn

Artists keep the chill out this winter Panarotti’s Tzaneen reached out to those in need this winter in the most creative fashion. It was called the “Keep the Chill Out this Winter” competition and it incorporated the help of Tzaneen’s youngsters to help those who cannot help themselves. The competition entailed colouring in a picture, returning the completed art work to Panarotti’s Tzaneen along with an item which could be donated to someone for winter. A total of one thousand colouring in pictures were dropped off at three primary schools in Tzaneen, name-

ly Laerskool Tzaneen Primary, Laerskool Duiwelskloof and Educare. All the entries received were then judged to determine a winner and the items collected, donated to Solidarity’s Helping Hands organization. There was a prize awarded to the school who had entered the most art work. The winning school was Laerskool Tzaneen Primary who was awarded a hamper consisting of a R1 000 minced meat voucher from Supermeat City, Fruit and Eggs hampers from Letaba Fruit & Veg and Tzaneen View Eggs as well as vouchers from Panarotti’s and Misty River Spur. The vouchers included four breakfasts and a Monsterito Pizza’s at Panarotti’s and a Spur Burger Box with a Large Chips. The young artists were treated to a fun-filled day at Panarotti’s Tzaneen and were afforded the opportunity to burst balloons and win prizes for the handy work. “It feels good knowing that these youngsters helped us to help those families who cannot help themselves,” said Stefanie van Dyk, manager of Panarotti’s Tzaneen. “We do more than just provide great food during this icy cold winter. We provide warm smiles too.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

LFPA join Knysna fight Pilot, Zayin Vermaak, with Chopper Kilo (a Bell Huey) flew from the Letaba Fire Protection Association’s (LFPA) base last week, Thursday, to assist with Knysna’s devastating fires. Initially, it was suspected that a group of teenagers started the fire which ripped through the picturesque town, but scientists now believe it could have been caused by a naturally occurring phenomena known as “spontaneous combustion”. It is allegedly a very common occurrence in dense forests around the world. Investigations are still underway. Nevertheless, damages estimated at around the R4 billion mark were caused by the fire which started last week. It is said that more than 1 200 volunteers joined the fight along with Working on Fire crews and fire prevention associations such as Tzaneen-based LFPA, along a 300 kilometre fire line for more than a week. Help was called in from every corner of the country and managed by a joint-provincial task team. Vermaak flew from Tzaneen to Gariep on the first day,

and on the second day from Gariep to Beaufort West. From there he made the trip to Knysna which he reached at lunchtime. Shortly after his arrival, he joined the rest of the crews and started fighting the fire. This pilot has been flying for twelve hours and so far, has dropped 134 Bambi buckets of water amounting to 13 400 litres of water over the course of just four days. According to him, the conditions down in Knysna are much calmer with the wind dying down. But, this now poses another problem seeing as the smoke has nowhere to go and the aerial resources had to stand down due to poor visibility. A couple of aerial resources were sent back to their basis. As soon as the fires are under control, Vermaak will be sent back to Tzaneen, a two-day trip. Bulletin will catch up with him once he has found his feet back on home ground, and bring you an exclusive interview. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

A street sign comes to life Driving through the dilapidated streets of Modjadjiskloof, the street signs are visibly tired too. However, the street names haven’t been changed, as is the wont of the present government and one in particular stands out – Maberly Street. Charles Thomas Astley Maberly, the eldest of three children, was born in England in 1905. He developed an interest in natural history at an early age and wrote and published “Nature Studies of a Boy Naturalist” whilst still at school at Repton. He moved to South Africa at the age of 18 and lived with a farming family near the Kruger National Park. He then bought his 15 acre farm near Modjadjiskloof and called it Narina so named after the beautiful and rarely seen bird the Narina Trogon. His oasis of natural vegetation was home to monkeys, a variety of antelope and wild pigs. It was here that he built an international reputation as an illustrator of African wildlife. He published several books on wildlife with his beautiful illustrations inside. Most of his illustrations depict wildlife in motion and in glorious detail. In order to achieve this eye to detail, Maberly spent many hours cycling through the

At Narina, Maberly kept his windows shut as there were some 50 vervet monkeys living there. Here he also used his powers of observation for his illustrations. Every afternoon Maberly would throw out a bucket of mealies. From the observation point, through the lounge window, was a knee-deep mud pool fed by a running tap. He would throw another couple of buckets full of mealies in the pool and then sit back and observe. Guinea fowl, monkeys, bush buck and duiker would come. The notoriously shy bush pigs, thirteen of them, would grub in the pool for mealies. Then Maberly would rush to the kitchen window where a genet cat waited for its nightly handout of bacon rind and bits of meat. He married Doris Burman in 1939. They had no children and divorced in 1961. In 1972 tragedy struck when an intruder entered his Narina farmhouse and stabbed Maberly to death. Charles Thomas Astley Maberly was only 67 years old.

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin. us.com

Merensky meet Maggs Nampo has become somewhat of a tradition at Merensky High. Every year, the week of 15-17 May is set aside for the Grades 9-11 pupils to travel to Nampo Park in Bothaville. The Nampo Show is one of the largest privately organised, and owned exhibitions, in the world. It is also the largest show of agricultural machinery and livestock in the southern hemisphere, and is held annually in the Free State. On the 16th of May, a full day was spent at Nampo Park where the group visited practi-

cal demonstrations of high-tech farming equipment, witnessed new technology in action and also attended an auction. The group had the opportunity to attend talks by experts in the agricultural sector including Bruce Whitfield, of the Moneyshow, Eusebius McKaiser of 702 Talk Radio and the ever controversial Jeremy Mags of Maggs on Media. Before heading home, the group had the privilege of a hands-on tour through the world renowned Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital.

When two become one A formal link between two of South Africa’s best stage trail-running races was formed. The Clemengold Wolkberg Trail Run and the Kruger2Canyon Challenge have now paired up as sister races to form The Great Limpopo Trail Challenge. Both the races start and finish in the province of Limpopo. The Wolkberg Trail Run goes to the highest point in the province known as The Iron Crown, during its first stage, while the Kruger2Canyon climbs up the well-known Mariepskop and then down into the Blyde River Canyon. Other similarities between the events are that they both start and finish at schools, consist of two stages, take place over long weekends and offer unique experiences running in otherwise inaccessible places. Craig Carolan, headmaster of Stanford Lake College, and Andrew Booth, director of KZN Trail Running, are both very excited by the direction the partnership will take trail-running in Limpopo. “Trail runners in Limpopo are widespread, but here we have two great events coming together to offer a quality of trail-running that can match up to virtually anywhere

in the world. We are incredibly blessed with the options on our doorstep and the more we can work together to make great events happen the better,” said Carolan. Booth backed this up “We are based in KZN, but the opportunity to co-host the Kruger2Canyon Challenge with Craig and Stanford Lake College, arose and it was obvious that a partnership would enhance the race and what is has to offer.” The venues are only a 1.5 hour drive from one another with the events taking place two months apart. For more information on the two events visit www.wolkbergtrailrun.com and www.kruger2canyonchallenge.co.za

generously donated food and bedding to the Tzaneen SPCA. Through this donation, the four-legged residents of the Tzaneen and surrounding area will brave the icy hand of winter and sleep

easy on full tummies and fluffy blankets. De Wet Vorster, vice-chairperson of the Student Council and organiser of the project, handed over the donation to the SPCA on the 30th of May.

Pfunanane Academy in Modjadjiskloof have reason to be proud of their 8-year old cros country star, Ratile Mosenagabo Lerutla. The disciplined little runner won a bronze medal in her race against a group of 100 other girls at the interprovincial cross country meeting held in Bronkhorstpruit on the 10th of June. Pfunanane had several other top-10 finishes, and the team is working hard to be ready for the upcoming cross country season. Ratile was one of only two Limpopo athletes to have medalled at the interprovincial.

Netballers make the cut Two of Merensky High’s star netballers will represent Limpopo at the winter games in Durban during the coming July break. Steph Marie de Lange and Megan MacGregor secured their spots in the u/16 team after stunning

performances at the trials in Polokwane last weekend. The event is sponsored by the Department of Education and is sure to provide a springboard for the girls as they plan a future career in the sport.

Megan MacGregor

Hierdie kompetisie is aangebied by Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog in Witbank.

Merensky salutes Alan

Merensky High School old boy, Alan Gordon, class of 2009, recently joined the ambassador programme (Mountain Biking) for Team Navworld, one of the fastest growing lifestyle, outdoor and adventure partners in South Africa. Gordon started his cycling career in 2005 as a road cyclist but his love for nature lured him to the single track and in 2012 he bought his first mountain bike. After completing a few races, Gordon was hooked. As a native to Tzaneen, Gordon is no stranger to the beautiful scenery that South African mountain bikers enjoy. He describes the “vibe” in the mountain biking community as “vastly different” to what he was used to and he says the bug bit him hard. But it was not until 2014 that Gordon converted to mountain biking full time. Impressively, in the same year, Gordon won the solo-men category in the 2014 Sabi Experience race. He also came 3rd in the Cape Pioneer Trek, an impressive feat for this newcomer to mountain biking. In an interview with Navworld, Gordon had the following to say:

Alan, how did you get into cycling? From an early age, all I ever wanted to do was ride my bike around with my friends. You can tell I really enjoyed it, because I never stopped! Tzaneen isn’t big. When I started out I knew nothing about racing, there was no-one to help me and I just did my own thing. Then, when I was 12, I entered my first local race. It was 45 km and I was hooked. At 15 I entered my first big race, the 94.7 Challenge – that’s when I decided to make cycling my career.

How much training do you put in per week? I train six days per week, putting in about 350 km on my bike. I also workout in the gym and get some running in every afternoon. On my off days, I just try to stay off my feet and chill as much as possible to let my muscles recover. How do you prepare for upcoming events? Two weeks before a race I start tapping off my training. Then, in the last week, I only concentrate on recovery rides and getting my head right for the event. There’s no use cramming, you can’t get any fitter than you already are! Do you ever take time off to chill after a race? Laughs. Never, there’s always the next race to prepare for. I make sure I take two 2-week holidays per year were I can take things easy. That’s when I leave my bike at home and concentrate on other outdoor activities such as walking on the beach, swimming and hiking. Whatever I do though, I always make sure I remain active. What do you do when not riding your bike? Eight months ago I started my cycling shop, Tzaneen Cycle Cafe, and running it keeps me pretty busy during the day when I’m not riding. Generally speaking, I’m an outdoors kind of guy and enjoy spending as much time out in the bush as I can. Recently, I started off-road running too.

What are your goals for 2017? This year, my main focus is on making my shop a success, so I don’t intend travelling as much as I have in the past. Because of this, I’ll be concentrating on weekend races that allow me to work during the week. That said, I’ll still be entering 4-5 stage races, just not as many as last year. Will you ever leave Tzaneen? No ways, I’ll never move from here, it’s a beautiful place to live and so close to nature. As a cyclist, I just have to get on my bike, turn a corner or two and I’m in the mountains – just the way I like it!

Where would you say you stand on the SA sports scene? It’s difficult to say. If you take ultra marathons, I’m normally in the top 10-15 in the country. What is it that draws you to ultra-distance mountain bike racing? It’s just so much more challenging. It’s not like road cycling were you travel in a pack, and teamwork and strategy get you across the line. Mountain biking is more self-reliant. Basically, you’re on your own; your end results are determined by your own strength and stamina.
