Limpopo a CIT hotspot

Transporting large amounts of cash is risky business and security companies suffer for it almost daily in South Africa. Gangs of armed criminals have now started using explosives to gain access to the money inside the cash trucks. These images were taken at the scene of yet another heist outside Polokwane this week.

Tzaneen region has the highest number of cash-in-transit heists in the world. This was confirmed by one of the biggest cash movers in the industry, G4S security. The company operates in 127 countries, of which the highest number of heists occur in South Africa’s Limpopo province – more specifically in the Letaba area. In the last 24 hours alone, three heists were reported, one just outside Polokwane and two in Nelspruit. A video of the Nelspruit incident was shared by motorists who were caught up in the middle of the attack on the N4 from Malalane towards Mbombela. “It is extremely dangerous to film such an event,” explained Faan van Dyk, Manager at G4S Tzaneen. “These gangs are highly trained professionals who operate in a military organized fashion. Should they spot a member of the public filming them during a heist, chances are they will kill you.” Laerskool Duiwelskloof Primary School

and have found alternative means of moving their money around. In the more rural areas such as Limpopo, however, the practice of cash in transit deliveries still prevails. “There really is no other way to move physical cash around. G4S has an air-wing, but it is just not a viable solution to move money around via chopper or small plane. We have a very good working relationship with all the other security companies in this area and we are continuously looking for better, safer and more effective ways of transporting money between clients. Sadly, we are monitored very closely by the criminal element, and every system will inevitably be scrutinized by those who make a living out of these heists.” Members of the public should avoid these scenes if they encounter them along their travels and are requested to contact either the nearest police station or Van Dyk directly on 073-165-9493. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The video showed heavily armed suspects using explosives to open the back of the cash truck. “Explosives, high powered assault rifles and armour piercing rounds are all used by these gangs to incapacitate the cash cars and force the crew to surrender their cargo. They are usually groups of up to 20 men and they work in conjunction with “Stopper teams” who regulate and control traffic.” In an incident in Ofcolaco four weeks ago, a G4S crew member was seriously wounded when the suspects opened fire on the armoured truck he was travelling in, with armour piercing rounds. He is still recovering in hospital. Around the same time a cash heist was foiled in Georges Valley when the guards returned fire on their assailants and wounded one of the suspects. The gang fled without their loot. Moving cash is risky business. The bigger metropolitan areas have started moving away from transporting cash

small stone memorials. The wide but not very deep crater, caused by the explosion, is also still there. Recently farmers in the area as well as Haenertsburg Rotary created a picnic spot for tourists to enjoy with concrete seating and concrete benches. Acacias and azaleas have been planted and an area has been leveled for parking. Professor Changuion said that he’s still working on putting up a historic sign about the day Gustav Thiel destroyed the long tom. The site overlooks the village with the imposing Iron Crown Mountain in the background. In his book Silence of the guns, Professor Changuion, explains the antiquity of the long toms and their importance in the Boer War. In May 1897 four guns carried by train were delivered in Pretoria. In October 1899 war between two Boer republics and England broke out. During October 1900 the Transvaal Volksraad with their weapons reached Haenertsburg, a stopover before

their journey to Pietersburg (now Polokwane). The British seized Pietersburg on 8 April 1901. General Beyers decided not to defend and withdrew to Houtboschberg with the last remaining long tom. The other long toms were destroyed, once the ammunition had been expended, to prevent them from falling into British hands. Just before the British took over Haenertsburg the Boers destroyed the last long tom at Rondebult on 30 April 1901. Professor Changuion had erected the long tom memorial in the village arboretum years earlier. He spent countless hours searching for long tom pieces up at Rondebult and in a storeroom of a British museum. The long tom was painstakingly recreated at the arboretum as pieces became available. The long tom was placed in a strategic position in the arboretum. Looking down the barrel of the long tom the view is directly towards Rondebult where the new tourist site has been created.

No firebreaks in the Kloof As August approaches, the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) warns of the pending fire prohibition which commences on the 1st of next month. This means that landowners will have until the 31st of July to finish burning their firebreaks. When the prohibition starts, no fires will be allowed. “Landowners will still be able to either slash or hoe their firebreaks during the prohibition, but if they are found starting a fire, they will be smacked on the wrist with a hefty fine,” explained Maritza Swanepoel of LFPA. “Firebreaks are the responsibility of each and every landowner, but LFPA members can request the help of the Working on Fire teams for fire breaks.” The importance, and obligations of fire breaks are outlined in the National Veld and Forest Fire Act No. 101 of 1998. Chapter 4 subsection 12 of this act, states that every land owner on whose land a veld fire may start or burn of from whose land it may spread, must prepare and maintain a firebreak on his or her side of the boundary between his or her land and any adjoining land. Municipalities are landowners. Therefore, they are obligated by law to ensure that they have sufficient firebreaks that are regularly maintained. According to a source within the Greater Tzaneen Municipality

(GTM), there are currently no firebreaks within their jurisdiction. The same with the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) in Modjadjiskloof. The LFPA had two meetings with the GTM, on the 31st of June and again on the 5th of July this year, to urge them to sort out their firebreaks before the start of the prohibition. During the first meeting, the acting municipal manager was in attendance and during the second, the Disaster Management chief, Michael Rabotata attended. “The meetings were an effort from the LFPA’s side to motivate the municipality to ensure their firebreaks have been done. In the past the municipalities were very good in complying with the National Veld and Forest Fire Act, but nothing has yet been done this year.” Our source at the GLM alleged that Modjadjiskloof has no firebreaks, and that the few that do exist, have not been maintained in years. This means that should a veld fire start in August, the entire town of Modjadjiskloof will be at risk. “We could be facing a similar catastrophe as the recent Knysna fires.” LFPA said that they are satisfied with the private landowners who comply every year and ensure that they have sufficient firebreaks despite the municipalities not heeding the warnings. Non-compliance by

the GTM and the GLM is a category 2 offense which is punishable with a hefty fine or a year imprisonment. Both GLM and GTM seem to have forgotten the costly lawsuit in 2012 when Bedrock Mining Supplies sued the both of them for damages to their Leobi Plantation. The cost of that lawsuit was R1 817 355.10. During the trial it came to light that despite numerous attempts, the GLM remarkably declined membership to the Letaba Fire Protection Association. In the meantime, we understand that they have joined the organization. “What the municipalities fail to realize is that the larger landowners have the capital to take them to court for damages to their properties as a result of their lax attitude towards ensuring they have well-maintained firebreaks. Perhaps when the entire Kloof becomes an uncontrollable inferno, and lives are lost, they might decide to do their jobs for a change,” said a resident of Modjadjiskloof. Bulletin has not sent enquiries to the GLM as we are still awaiting responses on four critical issues which we asked for comment on more than a month ago. It is very apparent that the municipal manager of the GLM does not have the interest of that community at heart. We have sent an enquiry to the GTM spokesperson, Neville Ndlala. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Misunderstanding or theft? A former scrap metal merchant from Tzaneen was arrested on Monday after police discovered a suspected stolen transformer on the back of her bakkie. Zelma Snyman (37), was arrested a day after she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a ditch outside a farm in the Tarentaalrand area. It is believed that the electrical transformer she was transporting at the time, was stolen off a farm in close proximity to the accident. Certain media reports stated that she was spotted driving around on the farm earlier that same evening, apparently with “her lights turned off”. She appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s court on Tuesday and was reportedly granted bail. The police have not yet provided any information on the charges against Snyman, or the investigations which are still underway. Following her release on Tuesday, Snyman took to social media and warned her followers that crime does not pay. “Crime does not pay… even if one did not really cause as much drama as the newspapers are going to report…” [Translated] Bulletin contacted Snyman on Thursday to hear her side of the story. According to her it could just be a misunderstanding. “I received a phone call from a gentleman who said that he lived on a government farm

and had an old transformer there which he wanted to sell for scrap. He accompanied me to the property and it appeared as though everything was legitimate as he knew the property very well,” she explained. “He said that he would provide me with an affidavit from the police once we reached Tzaneen, to prove that the sale of the transformer was above board. When we crashed my bakkie however, he jumped out the cab and ran off. That’s when I first suspected some foul play was at hand.” Snyman said that she has in the meantime confirmed that the man who allegedly wanted to sell her the transformer, is in fact an employee on the farm, and apparently not the owner. “You know, I used to run a scrap metal operation and people know me for that line of work. It happens that every now and again someone will phone me to sell some scrap metal and I then help out. I honestly thought that this was above board. Now, we have to wait for the investigations to determine what actually transpired.” At the time of going to print we received information that police had identified three suspects whom they believe to be linked to the incident. — Joe Dreyer

The controversial venue at the fourway crossing in Tarentaalrand known as Half-Human, was engulfed in flames on Wednesday evening. It is not sure what caused the fire, but fire fighters assisted by Letsitele Neighbourhood Watch, were on the scene at around 18:00 that evening battling to contain the flames which were endangering residential buildings on the property. The fire was fuelled by a strong

wind and fears arose that it could spark a fire near the storerooms of the Letaba Airfield. The fire was eventually contained and the damage kept to a minimum. At the time of going to print there was no further information on what caused the fire, or the exact extent of the damages, but an investigation has been launched and the outcome of that report will be published in our next edition.

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Greetings in the Name of Christ! Has technology improved our lives? Many will say it has and although this is true in some ways I believe it has been somewhat detrimental. Why I say this, is because, in many ways we have lost out on the human touch. I refer to e-mails, SMS’ what’s up, twitter etc. We used to have to write a letter, post it and await a reply, which could take some time, yet, getting a letter especially from a loved one could have a profound feeling. Looking at SMS’ and the other means, we do not hear the sound of the spoken word. Can we rightly say we can assess the feelings of the person who is sending the message, whereas when we hear the tone of the person’s voice we can know how the person is feeling? Then comes the question who must make contact first, is it always left to one person to initiate the call? Families often communicate through the means of technology only when they feel it is necessary, the odd “how are you” often seems few and far between. That is if you always have to be the initiator. I wonder if God had a cell phone would prayers cease? How many would take the time to send Him a message? However, God is always available and His line is never busy, yet we often only call on Him in the time of need. How many times do we just say “thank You Father” for no special reason but just because He means so much to us? Are we really true disciples of His or merely just followers? I would like to think that most of us are His true disciples but in this mad world we live in, we often forget that He is our Father. We go about our daily lives, which can be hectic at times, given little thought about what He did for us and is still doing every day. Wake up and smell the roses is an expression that is often forgotten. God gives us a new day, every day. Turn back to Him and give Him the credit due to Him. Pray continually, believe and have faith. Yet we are tempted by modern technology and often stray from the narrow way. He is always willing to accept us back into His arms. If things are going wrong for you turn to Him and ask Him to intercede in your situation. The relief coming from the knowledge that He is in charge is overwhelming. Do your part in increasing His Kingdom, be active in the life of His world. You are always special to Him no matter what you have done. He is always there believe it! Blessings.

Some remedies are not medicinal The most fearless animal on the planet, the rhino, is known for more than just its tough hide and formidable size. It possesses a certain quality that the world just cannot seem to get enough of, and because of the value attached to it, the price is always negotiable. The rhino’s ivory horn, its only tool for survival, has made this animal a very sought after commodity. The story of the rhino bares a stark resemblance to that of Tobie Potgieter and his Tzaneen-based construction outfit, Chuckudu. Chuckudu meaning ‘rhino’

in Setswana truly captures the essence of what makes this contractor stand out among his contemporaries in the local construction sector. Fierce, thorough and equipped for the challenge of bringing to life your project from the architect’s pages, is what Chukudu has built their reputation on over the course of the last few decades. The construction industry is a wilderness of contractors, suppliers, inspectors and experts all camped in by kilometers worth of legislative red tape. Knowing

that your project is in the capable hands of one of that camp’s most equipped inhabitants, is surely worth the peace of mind. After all, even the lion cannot tackle the rhino alone. Potgieter inherited his love for construction from his father, uncle and his grandfather, Tobie van den Heever before him. They were involved in the construction of monumental buildings in Tzaneen like the APK Church, NG Wolkberg church, Van Velden Hospital, Unicorn Primary School, the old Volkskas Bank building in Agatha road and the old Aventura Eiland resort better known today, as ATKV Eiland Resort. Adding to the list of accolades, Potgieter worked on the RBA Housing project in Polokwane and has successfully completed projects for Price Waterhouse Cooper and office objects (which included the Discovery offices in Polokwane). Chukudu specializes in any form of construction and only employ the skills of local sub-contractors if necessary. They are currently busy with the phase 2 construction of the Lulekane Spar mall for the Australian based International group, Chamakala Group, and smaller private projects ranging from Haenertsburg to the borders of the Kruger National. They work all over Limpopo Province. Seen above from the top left are Sam Madia, Timothy Bassopo, Tobie Potgieter, Alpheus “Do the job right the first time, Mabetlela, Baly Mojela and Charles Liebenberg, in the font are Peter Malepo, Mpho Maboea,Don’t cut corners because it is guaranRasta Pudikabekwa and Morris Sebola. teed to come back and bite you in the butt.” said Potgieter. No job is too big or too small and is supervised at all times. Graceland graces the tourist market

The Kudu River Valley is majestic and Graceland Eco Retreat in the Magoebaskloof commands a 360 degree view of this Valley. Anders Ragnarsson, who left his native Sweden in 1999, and his South African partner, Douglas Walker, bought this 85 hectare retreat in 2014 and have turned it into paradise with a view. Only one original wall remains. Anders and Douglas built on thatch roofed self contained chalets known as the Main House and Kudu Chalet. They are tastefully appointed with clean lines and scatterings of interesting artworks and wooden carvings. Graceland can sleep 12 people. In between are bamboo covered pergolas, verandahs, an open-air shower, a pizza oven and a braai area. Bougainvilleas will be trained up the recently completed pergolas. Otherwise the farm consists of indigenous flora such as aloes, cacti and succulents. The representative of the Chief of Mamabolo said that Graceland, as part of the community, was welcome to any of their indigenous plants to beautify the farm. Anders and Douglas also get on well with neighbouring tomato and avocado farming giant ZZ2. Graceland is off the grid with solar power, geysers or batteries for the little round white candles in the bedrooms. Graceland was so named before Anders and Douglas bought the retreat. In keeping with the theme their five giraffes are named Elvis, Lisa Marie, Priscilla, Memphis (born last year) and Tennessee (born this year). The giraffes love

Zoerdoef Glazed Pork Belly with Winter Veg Ingredients: 2kg Boneless Pork Belly Salt and Pepper, to taste 1 large onion, coarsely chopped 2 carrots, coarsely chopped 2 celery ribs, coarsely chopped 4 cups chicken stock 3 cups Zoerdoef Liqueur 1/2 cup light brown sugar 4 whole cloves

Directions:

Adjust oven to 150 degrees Celsius Using a sharp knife, score the fat side of the pork belly, diagonally, and season with salt and pepper. Fat side up, in a hot pan on stovetop, seal all the meat sides of the pork belly. Place the onions, carrots and celery in the bottom of a medium sized roasting pan and put the pork belly, scored side up, on top of the vegetables. Add chicken stock, 2 cups of Zoerdoef and whole cloves to the roasting pan. Cover the roasting pan with foil and place in warm oven at 150˚C for 3 hours. After 2.5 hours, open the roasting pan, turn the pork belly, fat side down, recover with foil and roast for remaining 30 mins. Remove pork belly from pan and wrap it in a kitchen cloth, put aside and let it cool at room temperature. Now it’s time to prepare the glaze. For the glaze, strain the pan liquids into a cooking pot and reduce over medium heat until reduced to about 2 cups of liquid. Add the remaining cup of Zoerdoef, through a strainer, into the reduced liquid. Add the ½ cup of brown sugar and reduce slightly over medium heat until it becomes a glossy, slightly sticky consistency. Cut the pork belly into portions. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Place pork belly, fat side down, in hot oil; cook until well-browned on all sides and heated through, 5 to 10 minutes. Reheat the glaze, place the individual pork belly pieces in the glaze, fat side up, but take care to not get glaze on the crispy fat. Enjoy, served with steamed winter vegetables.

A cottage above the rest Waterbessiebos Cottage is the design work of renowned architect, Koos Visser, on their property, on the outskirts of Tzaneen. If the setting doesn’t take your breath away; the abundance of indigenous bush and the bubbling brook, this underestimated cottage will. From the outside, the unique, modern, timber frame, 2 meters above the ground looks intriguing. Step inside and a whole new feeling takes over. The speckles of light that dance within this stunning, creatively thought out interior space are purely magical; immediately whisking you to a far off enchanted land. The balance between the big glass windows and the wooden interior, complimented with stone finishes inspire harmony, like the harmony found in nature. Chic, yet subtle, this interior is clean cut yet still offers comfort and warmth. A mix of modern and classic furnishings immediately makes you feel relaxed. The interior design, done by both Koos and his wife, is charming, like Myra herself. The way in which the cottage’s ar-

chitectural design and interior design compliment each other says a thousand words about how a husband and wife are a powerful force in any home space. From the beginning both Koos and Myra knew they wanted a classy, modern bathroom and kitchen nook, although it was important for the modern elements not to take over the connection with the ‘bush’ that this cottage is primarily about. The interior is fitted with custom-made Matumi wood panels and Koos’ design was focused on not disturbing the natural environment at all. Not one tree was removed and this is why the cottage is raised above the ground. “Inspiration is something that comes over time; it is not something that just happens. The initial design started as a box and the final

product is due to the process of creating a single relationship between alternative shapes.” Visser, not a fan of right-angles, avoids them when he can, proving that the box is not to be broken, or stepped out of but to be stretched in all different directions to create beautiful and breathtaking shapes, forms and spaces. There is no limit. Use the light. Incorporate the trees. Work around the stream. Waterbessiebos Cottage reminds us that whether you are building a home or a private getaway space to consider all the elements that nature offers. Marry them with the creative ideas and products offered by contemporary design, giving you a beautifully balanced “breath of fresh air”. Koos Visser’s Studio, Ichtus Studio is a corporate member of the South African Institute of Architects since 1984. His reputable services come highly recommended and he can be contacted on 015 307 3620 or architects@ ichtusstudio.com.

Interior Decorator – Do I Need One? When planning a project, a common question asked is “do I need an Interior Decorator, or can I do it myself?” Renthea Geyer, owner of House of Interiors in Tzaneen and Louis Trichardt, certainly advises that from a professional perspective, working a decorator into your budget will not be a mistake. The services of an Interior Decorator can not only save you time, but can help you cut costs you weren’t even aware of and may in fact be the best decision you can make. Be it one room, an office or your entire home, House of Interiors has done it all and offers the following reasons, why you may not want to risk doing a project without a professional. • A decorator’s eye can even save you money, as often items are bought and when placed in the home or work space it doesn’t look at all as expected, sometimes being an expensive mistake. • Having an interior space done by a professional can increase the value of the property, thus can be one of the most important investments you can make. You may not intend on selling now but as the saying goes, “the only thing in life that is constant is change”. • A decorator offers one-on-one consultations in the comfort of your own home. “We take a bunch of items to the client’s home and have a great time decorating

together within a day.” • Certain projects, where designer mirrors, décor and art pieces are concerned, installation can be completed the same day as the consultation, saving you an incredible amount of valued time. • With professional interior advice more can be determined at once, such as whether specific custom-made furniture needs to be made to order to match the client’s needs. • An interior decorator has access to items not available for the general public, therefore giving the client a wider variety and exclusivity. • Decorating services saves you from unwanted headaches of purchasing, driving, delivering, as the whole process, placement and installation is handled by your professional decorator.

“We work with the client’s budget and help to achieve the best results through the whole house within that limit.” Next time your have a decorating project, contact Renthea, as you may be pleasantly surprised that a professional service such as her own may be more affordable than you expected.

Spring is on its way and so are the mosquitoes. If you plan to spend a lot of time out on your deck this season then there are a couple of ways to combat those pesky mosquitoes. One way is having your herb garden pull double duty. The scent from the herbs: Rosemary, Basil, Lemon Balm and Lavender repel mosquitoes. Plant in pretty pots and place in front of entryways, or on your patio or deck. Lavender makes a gorgeous centerpiece on a patio table. For a little extra protection rub lemon balm or lavender on your wrists and ankles. You will smell lovely to everyone but mosquitoes. http://dailyappetite.com/2014/03/24/herbsthat-keep-mosquitos-away/

Ses goud vir MHS Armand Wiers

Canell Jackson en Sean Hunt.

Lin-Mari Theron

Vier matrikulante voeg hul ook by hierdie prestige-groep.

Plasie-krieketweek vier mondigwording

Aj Fourie in aksie.

Hard-working hockey mom Last week we reported on the phenomenal victory scored by the Limpopo Senior Ladies hockey when they reached the final of the South African Country Districts (SACD) tournament at Paarl Gymnasium. The team managed to bring home a silver medal after they were narrowly defeated by Western Province in that final. What made their siege at the tournament so much more impressive was the fact that the Limpopo team is comprised of players from all across the area including Phalaborwa, Tzaneen, Levubu and Polokwane. They all have families and most of them are mothers with a stable career and little ones to tend to. Training sessions need to be arranged well ahead of time to accommodate everyone. Some players actually work travelling expenses into their monthly budget. “It’s called dedication and an unconditional love for the game,” explained team captain Ashley Lynne van Schalkwyk. Bulletin caught up to her earlier this week to talk hockey, being a mother to a newborn and juggling a marriage with a career in education. The 31-year old has been playing hockey her entire life. She often coaches at Dr Annecke Primary in Letsitele where she teaches English. Her son, Daniel is four months old this week and he keeps her and hubby, Jacques,

on their toes at the best of times. So, how does she manage teaching, training and ‘wife-ing’ inbetween travelling to Paarl for a week-long hockey tournament? “Well I took Daniel along with me of course! He spent time next to the hockey field watching his mommy and all 15 his aunts take on some of the best players in the country. In between the games we bonded and spent time together.” Ashley plays Centre link, a position which traditionally requires an above average level of fitness. She stays in shape through her other love, cycling, and can be seen pedalling up and down the daunting Agatha hills almost daily. Mountain biking is her biggest love affair and Ashley competes in every big race throughout the season.

When talking about the SACD tournament, she emphasised that their team performed exceptionally well considering that the distances between the players robs them of the opportunity to practice together daily, as in the case of the teams they played against. The majority of Limpopo’s team is also a little older than their opponents. They were also the only Limpopo team to make it through to the finals as their male

counterparts dropped out of the tournament during the earlier stages. “Hockey in our province is not as big as it should be. Mostly this is because of a lack in facilities and funding, but also attitudes towards the sport. I believe that our victory this year will have a major impact in boosting the sport in our region as we proved that age and circumstance are no excuse to pursue something you really love.” In Mpumalanga the sport has as big a following as rugby and families spend their weekends next to the field. It is known to be a social sport which has no age restriction and minimum physical contact which decreases your chances of serious injuries. “Nelspruit has five clubs which each boast roughly eight teams who compete in a league against one another. Why can we not have that here too?” For now, the hockey season is at an end and Ashley will again focus on her preparations for the mountain bike season. The ladies will see one another early in 2018 when they start preparing for the next SACD challenge. For those interested in joining a hockey club, contact either Ben Vorster High, Merensky High or Stanford Lake College for details.
