Unacceptable! One of the most used roadways in Tzaneen, the Agatha Road near the new industrial area, is dangerously close to collapsing. Bulletin paid the site a visit on Thursday morning and what we saw was terrifying. Since our last visit at that site in March, the section beneath the road surface has shown significant signs of deterioration. Five months ago, only one of the galvanised culverts beneath the tarmac was visible. This week, both were prominent. The soil upon which the road rests has washed away causing a very deep and treacherous ditch to form beside it. That ditch is now slowly eating away at the tarmac. It is a very similar situation to that which caused the complete collapse of the R528 road through Georges Valley. The reparations of which took half a year to complete and cost the taxpayer many millions. Agatha Road is used daily to commute between Tzaneen and the new industrial area. Learner-drivers us this route during their driving lessons. This site was the cause of a major accident in September last year which tragically claimed the lives

only a matter of time before another life is lost on this route. What will the GTM say then? — Joe Dreyer joe@bulltin.us.com

of Francois Erasmus, his son Danré, and a family friend, Mike Hawken. The GTM claims that the erosion is caused by rain and have yet to admit the extreme danger they are placing their citizens in through their absolute disregard of these warnings. Their ignorance contravenes the Municipal Act and breaches the constitutional rights of every member of the Tzaneen community. We have brought the matter under the attention of Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the GTM, on numerous occasions in the past, but to date, that correspondence has led to absolutely no reaction from the municipality. Shockingly - to remedy the situation - the GTM poured a line of tar around the hole and placed green plastic bags filled with sand on its edges so as to prevent motorists from driving too close to the dangerously eroded fringe. That eroded fringe - has now crept in under that tar barrier and is eating away at the soil beneath the carriageway. It is

Agatha Road near the new industrial area is rapidly deteriorating. The GTM is however not showing any real interest in remedying the situation either. Watch a video of the erosion at this site on our website at www.bulletin.us.com.

tonka Recycling’s operations at the landfill site, last month. During that visit, owners Mike Zervogiannis and Hannes Hartman unveiled their plans to set in place an incentive-based rewards programme for their contractors. “The men and women here work tirelessly to collect and sort the various recyclable materials for us each day of the week,” explained Zervogiannis. “We’ve come up with a way to motivate them while at simultaneously thanking them for their hard work. Each month we will offer an incentive for the top three contractors. It will vary from month-to-month, but will include grocery and shopping vouchers for the runner-up and a grand prize for the winner.” This month, that grand prize lived up to the promise. Selena Mathebula walked away with a brand new LED Smart TV for

her massive 8.673 tonne haul during the month of July. The average collection weight for a contractor is around 2 tonnes, which makes Selena’s total haul a truly astonishing feat. Runner up Maria Ntimbana won a R500 Shoprite gift voucher for the 6.318 tonnes she collected and Sylvia Rapitsi took third place and a R300 Shoprite gift voucher for collecting 5.896 tonnes. “Well done to these three ladies for their hard work and daily dedication which shows that anything is possible if you apply your mind to it.” Next month’s incentive has been confirmed. “We will be giving the winner of next month’s competition a brand new fridge. The target collection for this new incentive has been set at 8 tonnes,” Zervogiannis concluded. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

No arrests after Gravelotte heist Money was left scattered along the R71 near Gravelotte on Tuesday morning following another cash-in-transit heist. A Fidelity cash truck was hit by a group of ten heavily armed suspects. Explosives were used to blow open the back of the truck and gain access to the undisclosed amount of money. None of the crew members were injured. The incident occurred at around 06:30 that morning.

Witnesses say that the suspects were travelling in three German luxury vehicles including a black BMW, a white Mercedes C200 and a white Mercedes ML. It is not certain whether these vehicles were reported stolen prior to the heist. The Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit and Letsitele Farm Watch was activat-

ed and members of the various groups intercepted and followed one of the suspect vehicles as they attempted to make their getaway. For the next three hours reports were streaming in over the communications system as members radioed in the whereabouts of the vehicle. They followed the suspects towards Hoedspruit, then back through the rural areas towards Phalaborwa, and back again towards Hoedspruit. Police units joined the search in an attempt to close off the various routes and apprehend the group. The Mercedes then darted back along the R71 towards Namakgale, a township just 10 kilometres outside of Phalaborwa. The vehicle entered the township and continued to travel along its winding backroads until it ultimately disappeared. The search Money was strewn over the ground was called off by the Farm Watch at the scene of the crime. after close on four hours and the SAPS tracking team continued. At the time of going to print no arrests had yet been made and the search for the suspects continued. Bulletin has received information from a source that a house was identified where neighbours stated that the suspect vehicle was noticed the night before. Leads are being followed up. This latest heist brings the total number of incidents in the Letaba area, to four in as many weeks with no arrests reported in either of these instances. Looking at the images it is worth while noting that there appears to be no dye on the scene. This observation has led to speculation that either the dye packs did not activate, or they were not present at all. Bulletin will follow up on the details. — Joe Dreyer

Narrow escape for Tzaneen Sheriff Tzaneen’s sheriff of the court, Tertius Robertson, had a narrow escape on Monday morning while serving a warrant and attachment order on an individual living in Tzaneen. The sheriff allegedly had to remove goods to the value of an amount in arrears, owed by the defendant to an unknown creditor. Bulletin was at the scene and noticed that some of the items included vehicles which were parked in the backyard. Upon his arrival at the home of the defendant, Robertson and his deputy were accosted by a man claiming to be the son of the defendant. He swore at the clerks and demanded that they leave the property or he will “blow their heads”. (An audio clip of the altercation is available on our website.)

“You come here and you ask me questions here, I will blow your head! I’m telling you,” he threatened. “You come again with that bastard… I will take you down bra, simple like ABC. Voetsek!” The man who refused to identify himself, jumped into his Ford pickup truck and sped off. Minutes later he was back. He aimed his vehicle straight for Robertson as he approached the driveway of his home and accelerated. Robertson managed to jump out of the way of the speeding vehicle and onto his own delivery truck. He was struck on the leg and the man who drove, crashed through his own gate. The aggressor sped back into the yard and allegedly produced a pump action shotgun which he pumped as he exited his vehicle. “Go

away, get out, just go!” he shouted. The Sheriff gave the order for the tow-truck to attach the vehicles from the backyard. The man continued to shout obscenities at the deputy before driving off again. He had told Robertson and his deputy that he was going to fetch guns and friends and he would return to chase them away. Robertson then contacted the police and requested that officers be sent to the address as a matter of urgency as his life was being threatened (a recording of that telephone conversation can be heard on our website). The police took more than an hour to respond to the emergency call. While waiting for the police, Robertson summoned private security companies who arrived on the scene within minutes. When the SAPS officers finally arrived, they

searched the man’s vehicle and found an airgun rifle in the backseat. The man claimed that was the gun he used to threaten the sheriff and his deputy. About 30 minutes later the man apologized and asked the sheriff whether he would employ him. It is not certain whether the police arrested the man, or whether he was charged. The police were seen chuckling and joking at the scene. It is a frightening thought that the authorities would make light of a situation as serious as attempted murder, assault and threatening with a dangerous weapon,” said one of the bystanders at the scene. “Shocking that they laugh about it when this situation could have turned out so much worse.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Police investigating transformer theft

UPDATE New information has come to light in the case of 37-year old former scrap-metal merchant, Zelma Snyman. She was arrested on charges of possession of stolen property two weeks ago when the bakkie she was driving, allegedly crashed through a farm’s fence in Tarentaalrand. Snyman told Bulletin that she was returning to Tzaneen after collecting the transformer from what she believed to be a “government-owned” farm. According to her she was contacted to collect a transformer on the property by a man claiming to be the owner of the farm. She stated

that after the accident, the man ran away from the scene and this added to the suspicion that the transformer was stolen. A farm manager from a neighbouring property gave Bulletin his account of what happened on the night in question. “At around 02:00 on Monday morning my security guard alerted me of the accident and I went to the scene to investigate. I saw that a vehicle had left the road and went to check if anyone was injured. I asked the lady what happened and she told me that she was returning from Phal-

Chiro Firm R5499

aborwa when she lost control of the vehicle. I found it rather strange because of the direction in which the vehicle was facing.” When the man asked Snyman about the transformer, she allegedly told him that she bought the transformer in Phalaborwa earlier that day. He asked her why she would be traveling with the transformer at 02:00 in the morning and she replied that she purchased it earlier but left Phalaborwa later to return home to Tzaneen. Another witness told us that four men were allegedly in the vehicle

with her at the time of the crash and that all four had fled. Police confirmed that they are searching for two other suspects whom are thought to have been accomplices in the theft. According to the second witness, a well-known local man and a female friend, whom he introduced as his wife, arrived on the scene a short while later to help Snyman, a friend of theirs. The witness reported that the man allegedly said he would return to Tzaneen to fetch a trailer to load the transformer and transport it to Tzaneen. A tow-truck company

arrived on the scene and attempted to remove the transformer with a winch, but failed. The GTM has, in the meantime, removed the transformer, valued at R100 000, and placed it at their offices for safe keeping until the matter is resolved. Snyman appeared in court on the 24th of July and was released on bail of R5 000. She will appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s court again on 29th of August, pending further police investigations. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

In die dae van telegrawe het ‘n jongman aansoek gedoen vir ‘n werk as Morsekode-operateur. Toe hy by die kantoor instap was daar ‘n geweldige lang ry van aansoekers. Die ander aansoekers was hoogs ontsteld: “Wag so ‘n bietjie! (2 Timoteus 3:16 – 17). Luister na die Boodskap!

Tzaneng Mall gets major revamp The General Manager of the Tzaneng Mall, Tzaneen Crossing and Lifestyle Centre, Alida Fraser (31) disclosed the three phase renovations that are underway at the Tzaneng Mall, all which have the intention to ease commuting between the CBD and the taxi and bus ranks. The first phase, which started in August 2016, was completed in April this year. This phase consisted of an escalator connecting the bus rank to the main trade level. It gives commuters, using the bus rank, an easy travelling way to the CBD walking through the Mall and avoiding inclement weather. Phase two began almost simultaneously. This included the new entrance hall next to Game. This phase was opened on the 8th July 2017 to the public and management gave every 100th person who walked into Mall, using the new Game entrance, a shopping voucher to the value of about R250.00. Alida says, “These new phases will benefit tenants and customers. We have improved our tenant mix

giving us a wider variety of shops. These improvements include Pick & Pay Clothing, Pick and Pay liquor, Mr Price Sport, Footgear, Rage, Sidestep and a Brand new Keedo, a clothing shop part of the Cape Union brand. As part of the improvements Cross Trainer is expanding its floor space. There are new moves in the pipeline including the prospect of all stores doing revamps in the next two to five years. The entire Mall is now lit with LED lighting. Alida says they have replaced all the bus rank lights, next to the taxi rank, with LEDS. Management is also in the process of putting LED lights in the covered parking areas. Phase three is the installation of an escalator connecting the main trade level to the taxi rank level. Another part of Phase three is to erect a corrugated iron roof from the Tzaneng Mall to the taxi rank, spanning some 80 meters. The tired old bathrooms were demolished and up-

graded to new bathrooms in the new location next to Mr Price Sport. The new bigger and better bathroom facilities have more than 3 times the previous facilities cubicles and a new addition of a disabled bathroom. Alida studied accounting at the University of Potchefstroom. She joined KPMG and then went to Mall of the North in Polokwane, which is owned by the same property development company as the three shopping centres in Tzaneen. Alida was in the accounting division at Mall of the North for five years before moving over as General Manager to Alida Fraser, General Manager of the Tzaneng the Tzaneen shopping Mall, Tzaneen Crossing and Lifestyle centre. centres.

Nkowa Court opens playground For a long time there existed the problem of parents having to appear in court with no place for their little ones to stay safe while the court is in session. This problem was especially prevalent at the Nkowankowa Magistrate’s court. On Friday, however, the court found and initiated the perfect solution. They erected a playground on the premises of the court house which will allow the children to be entertained in a safe environment during the often lengthy court proceedings. — Jeff Jackson jeff@bulletin.us.com

Smoking prevalence on the decrease in SA The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its report on the global tobacco epidemic alongside the UN high-level political forum on sustainable development. Controlling tobacco use is a key part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The report finds that more countries have implemented tobacco control policies, ranging from standardised plain packaging with strong graphic warnings and advertising bans, to no-smoking areas. Since 2007, when 1 billion people were covered with such policies (15% of the population), these measures have increased to cover 4.7 billion people or 63% of world’s population. The report includes South Africa in the list of the highest levels of achievement. In 2001, when the legislation came into force, the country was among the world leaders. In South Africa, smoking prevalence is now down to 18.2% of the adult population (about 29% of men and 8% of women), with only 16.2% as daily smokers. Despite this, about 44,000 people die of tobacco related diseases every year in South Africa. The triple ‘D’ threat of disease, disability and death caused by tobacco, costs South Africa billions of Rand every year in treatment and lost productivity. Worldwide tobacco use is the leading single easily preventable cause of death that kills over 7 million people each year. “Whilst we do not have the exact figures for South Africa, a calculation of a population of 50 million out of the world population of over 7.3 billion people, would ‘extrapolate’ to a public healthcare and lost productivity cost of about R12.9 billion. We can reduce this huge loss and save lives by improving our tobacco control

legislation,” explains Peter Ucko, CEO of Tobacco Alcohol and Gambling Advisory Advocacy and Action Group (TAG). “We face the problem that the tobacco industry continues to hamper government efforts to implement life- and cost-saving intervention.” “South Africa must introduce systematic monitoring of tobacco industry interference in government policy making,

which protects public health by shedding light on tobacco industry tactics. These include exaggerating the economic importance of the tobacco industry, attempting to discredit proven science and using litigation to intimidate governments.” Ucko suggests that all indoor smoking be banned and smoking must be controlled outdoors to

A good day at Phatudi The Community Responsiveness Programmes board, and NGO, in partnership with Children of the Dawn, entered into an agreement with Dr CN Phatudi hospital to embark on a CRP clean-up operation, “letsema” together with other stakeholders. The community at large was invited to this project to promote volunteerism in honour of former president Dr Nelson Rolihlanhla Mandela. Children of the dawn youth group who is in partnership with the CRP used to engage in clean-up activities and picked up litter along the main road. This year the clean-up campaign was extended to the community at large. CRP has extended invitations to different groups and structures in the community, it has also asked donations of cleaning materials. The hospital too provided CRP with gloves, masks and cleaning materials. The spirit of volunteerism was prevailing in the hospital corridors, wards and surroundings. CRP and hospital staff along with volunteers were seen hands on. The arrival of the Mayor of Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Maripe Mangena, met the expectation and he graced the occasion. He was welcomed by the hospital’s acting CEO Mr McDonald Sibuyi. Greater Tzaneen FM covered the event in one of their live talk shows. The manager of Boxer Stores Tzaneen, Mr Marcus Koena, arrived with a birthday cake in honour

of former president Mandela’s birthday. The cake was cut by the Mayor and celebrated in the children’s ward. Mathole bus services and Tzaneen Taxi association ferried the volunteers to and from the venue. “Thanks to our donors, Boxer supermarket, who supported us with cleaning materials, Greater Tzaneen Municipality who provided us with manpower and cleaning equipment, Letaba Juice Factory, Morokolotsi Archar, Supreme educational supplies, Paint Pot and Old Mutual who made this day a success. This is highly commendable. May the good God richly bless you,” said Jonas Maake, Chairperson of the CRP Board and GTM PR Councillor. Greater Tzaneen Municipality Mayor, Maripe Mangena, cuts the cake in celebration of the 67 minutes for Mandela Day. Along with him in the photo is Marcus Kwena, Manager of Boxer Stores in Tzaneen, Jonas Maake, Chairperson of CRP Board.

protect people from exposure to tobacco smoke pollution (TSP). Standardised plain packaging, with large (90%) graphic health warnings and messages, need to be implemented. Retail displays of tobacco products must be banned. Electronic cigarettes must be treated and controlled in the same way as combustible and non-combustible tobacco products. Ucko concluded, “An important need is to increase the health tax on tobacco products. The mechanism must be restructured in such a way as to make tobacco products progressively and consistently more expensive and less affordable to the consumer.” Nepal, India and the Philippines are among countries that conducted WHO backed initiatives to monitor tobacco use and then implemented measures to protect people from tobacco. Nepal introduced the world’s largest health warnings on tobacco packaging surfaces (covering 90% of the package) in May 2015 after using a set of household tobacco survey questions that allowed authorities to detect a high prevalence of adult male smokers and users of smokeless products. The Philippines’ landmark Sin Tax Reform Law was passed in 2012 after its 2009 global adult tobacco survey showed high smoking rates among men (47.4%) and boys (12.9%). Such strong tobacco demand reduction measures have contributed to declining tobacco use, according to its 2015 adult tobacco survey results Comprehensive smoke-free legislation is currently in place for almost 1.5 billion people in 55 countries. Since 2007, dramatic progress has been witnessed in low- and middle-income countries, 35 of which have adopted a complete smoke-free law since 2007. Appropriate cessation treatment is in place for 2.4 billion people in 26 countries. 3.2 billion people live in a country that aired at least one comprehensive national anti-tobacco mass media campaign in the last two years. Raising taxes to increase tobacco product prices is the most effective and cost effective means to reduce tobacco use and encourage users to quit. However, it is one of the least used tobacco control measures.

Annies spog op sportveld Tsaneng school attends first Tritech Tsaneng secondary school, a farm school on the grounds at Westfalia just outside Tzaneen, participated in the popular Tritech Science Competition this week. Seven of the pupils from this school made history by being the first ever group from their school to participate in this regional science competition. The group identified two challenges at their school which they attempted to solve, namely water wastage and unhygienic ab-

lutions on the premises. Through rigorous experiments and some ground-breaking work, the group of young scientists found viable and sustainable solutions which will carry their school well into the future. The next step for these aspiring young scientists is the National Tritech Science Competition which is to be held on the 15th and 16th of September this year at the neighbouring Merensky High School.

Dick Pallas and George Baker. Photos by: Joe Dreyer & Jacques Smuts. The first Midas Tzaneen Rally went off without a hitch this past weekend. Hundreds of spectators were attracted to the sounds of the roaring speedsters as they navigated their way through well plotted stages in and around Tzaneen on Friday evening and the following Saturday. Arguably the highlight for many was the final stage through the centre of town on Saturday afternoon. Of the 27 vehicles who entered, only nine did not make it to the finish line. On Friday evening there were three crashes which included veteran driver, Eddie Simpson and his navigator, Marco Lottering in their famous Opel Corsa. The vehicle was repaired and the following day the duo re-entered the race. For most of the spectators, the inclusion of

a new “F” Class provided some adrenaline pumping viewing as the two Maverick vehicles came screaming over the tarmac under the R71. The Maverick class resembles the traditional Sand Master vehicles who are notoriously quick and nimble. One of the Mavericks took the overall first place at this inaugural race. The team of Nico Du Randt and JG Klassen were quickest through all eight of the stages and clocked the overall winning time of 01:13:39 to take home gold. Tzaneen’s Louis Menge navigated for seasoned Secunda-based driver, Natie Booysen in their 1968 1600 Ford Escourt and despite being the smallest of the classes (D Class), managed a fantas-

tic fourth place overall with their time of 01:15:37. They were the only Ford in the line up to finish the event and they managed to do it 20 seconds faster than one of the Mavericks and less than two minutes behind the Subaru team who took second place. According to the event organizers, the 27 entrants they received from as far afield as Gauteng, far exceeded their expectations and has thus paved the way for the future of the Midas Tzaneen Rally. “Thank you to Hennie Smit of Midas Tzaneen who were our main sponsors for this event and who came on board at the last minute to make it happen,” said Louis Menge, one of the organizers of the event. “A very special word

of thanks also to Braam Moster of Merensky Holdings who made their land available to us for the various stages. Without your support we would not have had all the exciting stages around the dam, the canal and Greystone.” Menge also extended a heartfelt thanks to all their sponsors for making the event a success.
