A-gat-ha of a road The gigantic sinkhole eating its way accross the top of Agatha Road near the entrance to the very popular Kingswalden wedding and conferencing venue. Below is a timeline of images which show the progression of the now life-threatening situation over the course of the last three years. This is one of three sinkholes in the area and yet, despite our best efforts, the GTM choose to turn a blind eye.
of these sinkholes unknowingly. The weight of their vehicle will cause the tarmac to collapse, sending it crashing three or four metres straight down into the ravine or forestry plantations below. It will be a miracle if anyone inside the vehicle survives the fall. When a similar incident occurred on the R528 road through Georges Valley, the authorities paid little attention to the concerns of the residents who warned of impending doom. Only after countless number of vehicles were damaged, and the road finally gave way completely, did the municipality and Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) step in. Subsequently, an entire section of that road

had to be rebuilt at the cost of millions (the exact amount is still unknown as despite efforts by the media, the figures were never released) and the inconvenience of all residents in that area. It is not a new problem either. In May 2013, a group of Agatha residents under the guidance of Juan Claassen, took the matter into their own hands. Nine potholes were fixed along the nightmarish road using 400 litres of tar and stone. The GTM offered no assistance and instead shrugged their shoulders claiming that the road was a provincial road and therefore not their concern. Two years later almost to the day, a municipal vehicle was photographed stranded next
to the Agatha Road after a pothole claimed one its tyres. Shockingly, even that was not enough to spur them into action. If their own losses do not concern them, why would the losses incurred by their residents be any different? We have sent an enquiry to RAL and the GTM, but at the time of going to print we had still had no response. Motorists are warned to travel with care as they approach the Kingswalden bend heading from Tzaneen towards Agatha. The sinkhole has crept into the middle of the road and now covers the entire left hand lane. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Agatha Road is fast deteriorating and the situation is no longer considered a lack of maintenance by the municipality, but rather a life threatening concern. Three sinkholes have formed over the course of the last few years on three different sections of the route. What started as small, barely visible bumps in the road surface have now grown into monstrous cavities the size of a regular family sedan. The soil beneath the road is collapsing causing the tarred surface above it to crumble under its own weight and eventually cave in. Because the danger is not visible from above, motorists stand the risk of crossing over one

raw sewerage in the old oxidation plant almost set in motion an environmental disaster. Mashaba came under fire regularly because of her lack of communication (despite her being the information officer) and transparency and being ever absent from her post. Residents’ complaints and local media enquiries were ignored. She was known among the locals as the municipal manager who was forever attending training courses. It is not certain whether she re-applied for her position when it was advertised in the Sowetan and the Letaba Herald (not in Bulletin because according to the GLM they experienced budgetary constraints) earlier this month. We also do not know where she will be moved to as our media enquiries are simply being ignored. The new acting manager, Mhangwana, comes to Modjadjiskloof from the Tubatse (Burgersfort) municipality. He served as the acting CFO there. Bulletin
has asked the spokesperson for the GLM, Lovers Maenetja for background information and a profile on Mhangwana in order to properly introduce him to the residents he will hopefully serve. At the time of going to print however, we had received no information whatsoever. “I will have to speak to him (Mhangwana) first to get his profile,” Maenetja said. By law, Mhangwana will only be allowed to act in the position of MuShe was known among the locals nicipal Manager for a as period of three months the municipal ma nager who was forever before a permanent appointment is made. Right to transparency reserved Over the course of the last few months the Greater Letaba Municipality seemed to follow suit with the GTM’s blatant (albeit not officially confirmed nor denied) decision to withdraw all advertising and correspondence with and from the Bulletin. These municipalities have not only stopped answering and responding to our official media enquiries, but have also stopped advertising vacancies and other municipal announcements with this paper. Important announcements which have a direct impact on the lives of the citizens within their municipalities are therefore not communicated adequately to every section of the community. This not only undermines the rights of the ratepayer, but contrasts the promotion of transparency and public participation as set out in the guidelines of the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA). This week’s announcement of a new municipal manager for Modjadjiskloof came as a surprise to the majority of residents who were
not even aware that the position was vacant in the first place. The vacancy was advertised in the Sowetan – a national daily newspaper based in Gauteng, and one other local weekly paper. The move by the GLM undercuts the core principles set out in the Guide on Public Participation in the Public Service manuscript issued by DPSA in 2014. In this manuscript, the department outlines the importance of using local media as a cost effective tool in the distribution of information from local government to their public. It states: “Media plays an important role in citizen participation. Information can be disseminated to the population at large in a very easy and efficient matter. Local media, especially, plays a key role in the process of citizen participation at the local level.” We approached GLM spokesperson, Lovers Maenetja, and asked why the Bulletin was seemingly being side-lined by the municipality. Could it be because of our recent investigative articles on the service delivery
failures in that municipality? “We do use local media, most of the time it’s Herald due to budget constraints in other directorates,” she replied. “Your articles, please next time use reliable sources… you’re being fed too much wrong information and no matter how much I try to clarify you, you seem to have your own conclusions on matters.” Perhaps if the five media enquiries we sent to her office more than three weeks ago (one as far back as the 27th of June) were responded to, we would not have to resort to information from “sources”. Sources which include councillors within the GLM who openly provide the media with statements, information and press releases. Bulletin has in the past attempted to establish a relationship with the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), but this too has been fruitless. Our media enquiries are ignored, and similarly announcements are published elsewhere. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Follow up - GTM remain mum over hawkers Tzaneen’s formal business sector added its voice to the fight against the illegal street vendor trade plaguing the town centre. Larger retailers and business owners highlighted the cost of doing business with reference to monthly obligations including income tax, property levies and taxes, staff salaries and PAYE payments coupled with strict adherence to the health and safety act. “If my retail space is not compliant to any of the health and safety regulations dictated under law, my business will be fined and could even face closure.” Bakeries face hefty fines should they not have a visible notice warning customers of food allergens. Their kitchen staff have to wear hair nets, aprons and plastic gloves to ensure hygiene. In contrast the vendors setup shop where they
see fit without prejudice. Some prepare food on open flames in parking areas within the CBD. The pavements opposite Tzaneen Crossing and the police station all the way down to the bus and taxi ranks are so overcrowded by these traders that pedestrians have to walk in the street. Cardboard boxes, wooden pallets and torn up umbrellas or gazebos stain the shopfronts of large national retailers. Parking spaces are littered with rubbish and shoppers express their concern over safety in this area. But nothing is done by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality to remedy, or at the very least, manage the situation. Neville Ndlala, spokesperson for the municipality made a promise that the GTM would “clean up the hawkers and remove the illegal traders” more than a month ago. Since then no
word has come from his office on the matter. Some have taken a defensive stance on the contentious issue, arguing that economic turmoil and the unemployment rate is to blame for the influx of these vendors. The fact remains that the need to fend for oneself does not raise one above the law. Justifying the operations of an illegal vendor on the assumption that he is trying to make a living is akin to justifying driving through a red light because you were late and you had no other choice. In the meantime the R71 vendors continue to ignore eviction notices in the same manner that the GTM has ignored the community’s concerns. Blame shifting continues and to date, no solution has been proposed. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Flying with the Butterflies The real tragedy struck nearly three years, to the day, after the horrific accident. On 16th of August 2014, Mariette Kraus (34), daughter of Adele Lappat Dey, was in a car accident in Johannesburg. This year, on Sunday, 6 August 2017, Mariette, passed on to “fly with the butterflies” as Adele says, as she could not bear to say it any other way. The accident broke both of Mariette’s legs. One leg was so badly crushed, amputation was considered. Thankfully, the orthopedic surgeon insisted on doing an ‘18 pin job’ and incredibly with the help of Tzaneen physiotherapist, Christine Erasmus, within only four months, Mariette was walking again, with only a very slight limp. “Next time you come back, you come in heels,” were her surgeon’s words. Adele smiled as she recalled how her daughter insisted on putting on her high heels, which she loved, just before entering into the room upon her next appointment just as the doctor had ordered. “She was very determined and persistent and the doctors loved her.” It was an ordeal that changed her life. Last year, Mariette found herself in a very stressful working environment and this caused her hematoma, from the head injury of the accident, to suddenly start expanding. She experienced terrible headaches and a scan revealed that she had indeed suffered a silent stroke. After radiation, 95% of the growth was gone, but due to the stressful working environment, by that December, Christine said she could no longer drive or work as her right side was going limp and she started experiencing increased spasticity in her hands and feet. Her short term memory and concentration were also beginning to deteriorate. In February this year, she had deteriorated so rapidly that her neurosurgeon told
the family there was nothing more that could be done. It was suggested that she go to a rehabilitation centre to learn to use her body again. In the seven weeks that she was there, there was no improvement; in fact it only got worse from there. “Home would be the difference”, Rodney Dey recounts how difficult it was to see his adopted daughter like this but “it was nice to see her reactions” when friends, family and their children came to visit. “It’s hard not to love someone who is so devoted to other people’s children.” Rodney, who had known Kraus for 13 years, married her mother in June this year and officially adopted her as his daughter. “I wanted to give her family. Something drove me to get it done”. He and Adele have been blown away by the flooding of messages from all over the world. “We saw that she was greatly loved. From the people in Tzaneen we received some amazing offers and we are grateful to all.” “She was my very best friend” her mother told me. What a priceless and wonderful gift for a daughter to bestow on her mother. Mariette Hilda Kraus, born 17 December 1982, will be sorely missed by her family and friends. — Estelle von Pannier ads@bulletin.us.com

The Message Dr Jan Truter
Ned Herv Kerk Letsitele Wasmasjien Die Sanyo Electric Company verkoop ‘n baie unieke wasmasjien. Min huise is deesdae sonder ‘n klerewasmasjien.

Electronic cigarettes cause ‘popcorn lung’ The science is clear. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), called e-cigarettes, are not safe. They are harmful to users and cause dangerous pollution to non-users. This includes devices that do not contain the highly addictive drug nicotine, now called electronic non-nicotine delivery systems (ENNDS). These devices are no longer simply e-cigarettes. They have become more sophisticated and more deadly. Whether they contain nicotine or not, they can cause ‘popcorn lung’, says a Professor of Environmental Genetics
at Harvard University. He asserts that future research will expose more risks. Bronchiolitis obliterans (BO), known as popcorn lung, is a disease that results in obstruction of the smallest airways of the lungs (bronchioles) due to inflammation. The cause is a flavouring chemical diacetyl, used in flavouring popcorn and also used in ENDS and ENNDS. The aerosol emitted by these devices includes cancer-causing chemicals such as formaldehyde and other toxins, all of which can
damage your lungs. “The variety of appealing flavours of fruit, alcohol and candy are attractive to young people,” says Peter Ucko, CEO of TAG in Johannesburg (Tobacco Alcohol and Gambling Group). “Do not be deluded that the so-called ‘vapour’ from ENDS/ENNDS is harmless. It is an aerosol cocktail of toxic chemicals, which is also an air pollutant dangerous to non-users.” Research published in the British Medical Journal confirms that the pollution caused
by ENDS/ENNDS gets to extremely high levels indoors. Air quality measurements at an e-cigarette event in a large room in a hotel established that tiny particulate matter (PM25) was higher than concentrations reported in hookah cafes and bars that allowed cigarettes smoking. Ucko concludes, “The same policies which control smoking of tobacco products to protect people from exposure to tobacco smoke pollution (TSP), must be applied to electronic devices.”

Agri-Merensky honoured at Show The 2017 Letaba Show granted ample opportunity for Agri-Merensky’s show teams to display their skills over a four day period. The Plasie showmen competed against the best from Gauteng and Mpumalanga. Behind the scenes, 27 Plasies were responsible for taking care of and grooming 24 cattle and 3 goats. The adrenaline flowed when they presented their livestock in front of judges in the ring. In the cattle division, the junior Plasie showmen took top honours with Megan Strydom obtaining a 1st place and Andrea
van Jaarsveld 2nd. Justin Breytenbach and Luandi Visagie ranked 4th and 5th. The senior team salutes Nicky Smith with her 2nd place, while Johan Oberholzer (3rd), Iszabella le Roux (4th) and Timothy Venter (5th) contributed to the team’s success. The judges also took notice of the Pin2Zyl stud awarding 2nd places for “3 Best Heifers” and “Group of 4 Cattle” and a 3rd place for “Best Duo”. Agri-Merensky’s pride, Zeus, now carries the title: Senior Reserve Champion Bull.

Expectations, values, sustainability and challenges of this programme were discussed. Brainstorming sessions with other organisers from across South Africa proved once again how this programme contributes to the development of
the youth. Teambuilding sessions ensured a fun weekend. The Indaba was presented by the programme managers of the President’s Award from various provinces. The delegates also had to complete a 6 km hike in the college’s nature reserve where zebras, giraffes and wildebeest were spotted.

How to get the best out of your horse Brenda Routledge from Haenertsburg started riding horses at the age of seven. She stopped as a teenager and then took up the sport again in her 20s when she moved to her present home outside the village. She did dressage and there were many things with which she was uncomfortable. Her horse was uncomfortable going in one direction, so she was uncomfortable. Brenda says, “The communication I was getting from her was that she wasn’t enjoying it. She was a naturally talented horse but I could not get past the initial problems. I stopped riding for a while.” Brenda then looked into more natural approaches for her two horses, Eryn and Harvest Moon. She found Zaneta Georgiades in Pretoria who introduced her to Straightness Training. Straightness Training was developed by Marijke de Jong from Holland. Marijke had problems with one of her horses and that led her into delving into horse issues. Most problems stem from a physical imbalance. Marijke also realised that it is often an emotional or spiritual imbalance. She went back to the old master horsemen to study their works. She’s now developed a holistic approach based on information accumulated and has put together an online course. This encompasses everything from the physical issues of a horse, to spiritual and emotional balance. Brenda signed up for the home study course. She found it so amazing that she’s signed up for the master course. From there on both Eryn and Harvest Moon improved. Harvest Moon has a problem with her back legs called stifle lock. Now with Straightness Training she’s done an about turn. She’s moving forward and her strides are much better. Straightness Training consists of five pillars: The first is groundwork, the second is longeing (a Dutch expression), the third is work in hand, the fourth is riding and the fifth is liberty.
Brenda Routledge with her horse Harvest Moon.
Within those five pillars are five grades. Brenda had to submit a touchstone and be evaluated at each level. One has to pass the touchstone to go to the next level. It’s a huge challenge. The finesse required for the simplest exercises is incredible. If one qualifies for Straightness Training one knows that one deserves it. One has to film a sequence of movements without interruptions. That’s how the assessment works. Evaluators are worldwide but Zaneta is the only one in South Africa. She’s a qualified instructor and now involved in evaluation worldwide. Brenda says that she struggled along aimlessly until she found this. It opened up a whole new world. It’s not just about learning how to gymnasticise your horse. One has to
master oneself and have balance in one’s own self in order to achieve with one’s horse as horses are mirrored by us. It’s like going into a psychological programme. All Brenda’s gremlins appeared while on the course but it’s helped her become a better person. One can pull the wool over people’s eyes but one can’t do that with a horse. The traditional way to train a horse is by domination. In Straightness Training horses aren’t trained as robots. Straightness looks for leadership but in a cooperative way with the horse. Straightness requires dialogue and the horse’s opinion counts. At the end of the day the horse wants to work with its rider. On a physical level riders train the horses without any form of aids like straps that force their heads into positions. In straightness riders teach the horse to take responsibility when it’s ready and riders don’t force the horses. Lots of horses suffer immensely as when they resist riders get a whip or a spur or a stronger bit. Brenda says, “In Straightness Training we take it step by step and teach them through reinforcement but never with force. That way we avoid resistance. I make sure that it’s always comfortable. Then I don’t get the bad behaviour. It takes time. Most riders simply want the rosettes and be done with it. In Straightness Training we want to give the horses a good and happy life.” She added, “I’m still at Grade One level. It’s taken a year and I have two more touchstones to work on. It’s at your own pace and also a horse is an individual. Some horses have problems that take longer to sort out. Often one peels off the layers that one thought were physical problems but turn out to be emotional issues.” Brenda is co-coordinating the Limpopo Straightness Clinics and is passionate about Straightness Training as she’s seen the positive changes in her horses and herself.

Tzaneen Primary brings back bronze Laerskool Tzaneen Primary’s First girls hockey team followed in the footsteps of their netball counterparts and shook up the Super 12 Hockey Tournament two weekends ago in Pretoria. Achieving a bronze medal by finishing in third spot overall, meant that the school can now boast with another victory in the sporting arena. What made their effort so impressive is that the girls faced off against some of the toughest primary schools in the country. These schools are also accustomed to the speed and
required control of an astro pitch, which put the Tzaneen girls on the back foot considering half of the team had never crossed sticks off the conventional grass fields. The girls played four matches on the tournament’s first day of which they won two and drew two. Day two saw them win the last of their pools games against Kruinsig with a score of 2-0 which pushed them into the top spot. The girls suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Rustenburg in the semi-finals which saw them in play-offs for fourth and third spot. It

was Mooiriver from Potchefstroom who stood in the way of the Larries and a bronze medal. The local team threw everything they had at arguably their toughest opponents to date and managed a 1-0 win to make the podium. Their male counterparts, the First Boys team fought hard during their tournament and managed a number of exceptional wins. They suffered some key defeats during crucial stages of the tournament however, which resulted in the boys ending their tournament in a satisfying fifth position. Their total, com-
bined with the girls’ medal-finish allowed Laerskool Tzaneen Primary an overall third place after the tournament. “Judging by the results these two top teams delivered, we can only hold our breath in anticipation for next year’s tournament,” said Ula Schoeman of Laerskool Tzaneen Primary. “With the new astro pitch currently under construction at our neighbouring Ben Vorster High, our hockey will be forced onto another level.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The boys played a physically draining game against the team from Koster in the North West, which saw the two teams reply to every point scored by their opponents. The second half ended in a nail-biting 17-15 in favour of the hosts and helped them through to the semi-finals which will be played at Stanford Lake tomorrow. This time round the Badgers will face off against the might of Christiana School for their place in the finals Photos by GKT Sport the weekend after that.
