Not so ‘untouchable’ It has been exactly a week and still the man who caused a three-car pileup on the Politsi road has not been arrested. The driver of the red Mercedes Benz C63 was identified over social media and video footage of his reckless and dangerous behaviour was spread across all platforms. David Mhangwana spent Friday morning speeding his way through the streets of Tzaneen, burning up the tyres of his half-a-million Rand vehicle as if he had won the national lottery. At one stage Mhangwana stopped in at Tyre Rack, a tyre fitment centre in Tzaneen’s CBD to replace two tyres on his vehicle. Waahid Valli, the manager at Tyre Rack said that although Mhangwana drove off without paying for the tyres, he returned the very next day and apologised for his actions. “He paid the amount for the two tyres and apologised profusely. He is a regular client of ours and we have never had a problem with him before.” In the accident he caused earlier that morning, three wellknown locals, Johan Grobbelaar of Shamu Swimming Club, Zonya Beukes a Western Mounted Games equestrian and Winel Kasselman, sustained damages to their vehicles and minor injuries. An 8-month old baby girl was in one of the vehicles involved in the pileup, but fortunately sustained no serious injuries.
She underwent a medical check up and was sent home with her parents. “We were all driving from Politsi towards Tzaneen as part of the usual Friday morning commute, when this crazy driver came speeding in from Modjadjiskloof side and drifted into oncoming traffic. Of course we all slammed on brakes and then smashed into each other,” explained Grobbelaar. “The driver stopped, got out of his car and looked around before speeding off again.” The provincial police spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, confirmed that a case of negligent driving had been opened against David Mhangwana, but that he has not yet been arrested as investigations are still underway. “All drivers involved are known and in reckless or negligent driving, we first get the facts straight through investigations and then we refer the matter to the NPA for decision. Joe is telling a hearsay which will be cleared by this process,” he told the media. During the escapade on Friday morning, Mhangwana shouted out of the driver’s side window that he would not be arrested because he is untouchable. We will keep you informed on the developments in this case as information becomes available. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

When we contacted the spokesperson for the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Neville Ndlala, he was unable to indicate a plan of action for the repairs on that section of the road. “Which part of Boundary Street are you referring to? I will have to follow up and let you know, “ he said.
This was yesterday morning (Thursday) and we were unable to wait for his response to this serious matter which has been left for 27 days longer than it should have been already. We will publish his response to this problem in next week’s issue. The ‘Simon says’ Game with a twist Game stores Tzaneen has denied any knowledge of a man by the name of Simon Makwashu employed as a manager at their store. This comes after a man claiming to be dispatch manager at this store, attempted to receive payments from residents for electronic goods ranging from Xbox’s to LED televisions at a fraction of the retail price. On Monday morning Bulletin editor, Joe Dreyer, was approached by a man at his office in Hospital Street claiming that he was working for Game and was selling goods on special as part of a commission-driven campaign by the national retailer. He introduced himself as “Given” and explained that the transactions were all above board and carried the Game
stamp of approval. “It is not illegal, you can call Game Tzaneen and they will explain to you that we receive commission from them on every sale we make. But this is a very limited offer and we have chosen to identify only certain qualifying customers,” he explained. “My friend works as a manager there and he will put you on the system and issue you with a stamped invoice.” Given became suspicious when Dreyer started interrogating him and soon changed his story. “Oh, I see now that this is the wrong office. I thought this was where one of our Indian customers was working, sorry for disturbing.” He briskly walked off mid-conversation. We contacted Simon. He intro-
duced himself as a manager at Game and even went as far as saying that he was a superior at the store. “I can give you Xbox for only R1500 but then you must hurry today and come see me at the dispatch area behind Game.” Simon wanted a payment of R700 to be made into a PEP stores account and only once that was done would he meet at the designated spot to receive the balance in cash and hand over the Xbox. “I will send you a PIN number which you must use at PEP to make payment, okay?” When we took a little too long for his liking, Simon called back in an agitated tone. “When you are serious, you call me okay!” During our numerous phone call conversations, Simon even offered a business deal. “If you
get more people to support me, you can also earn commission. Nice money for you.” Subsequently we have not yet heard from Simon again, but have handed over his number to the authorities who are investigating the matter. His number is 073-514-5245. The recordings of the telephone conversation between Dreyer and Simon can be heard on our website and Facebook page. “Please do not fall for these scams,” urged Leon Coomans of Letaba Alarms. “There have been such cases in the past and people get hurt because these con artists steal your money and you will never again hear from them.” — Joe Dreyer

Monna Street attack – no arrests There have still been no arrests in connection with the brutal attack on an 82-year resident from Phalaborwa, last week. Julie Haremse was viciously attacked in her home at around 13:00 last week Thursday by an unknown man who accosted her inside her home in Monna Street and stabbed her multiple times in the throat. She was then bound with duct tape and left in her garage. It is reported that her assailant then entered her home and helped himself to something to eat from the kitchen before watching television in her lounge. Apparently Harmse’s pet Parakeet sounded the alarm and the suspect shoved the bird into a drawer in an effort to keep it quiet. Although the exact timeline is still not certain, it is believed that the man spent the night in Harmse’s bed before dressing in clothes from her cupboard (be-
longing to her late husband) and fleeing the scene that following morning. Neighbours noticed that something was off when they spotted her car outside the gate and the garage door slightly ajar. Upon investigating, they found her on the floor of her garage, still bound with the duct tape. Harmse was rushed to Mediclinic Tzaneen where she was treated for the multiple stab wounds to her throat and defensive wounds to her left arm. At the time of going to print she was recovering well and medical staff said she might be back at home by the weekend. On Monday morning Bulletin contacted a family member about the incident who requested that we contact her again on Wednesday. We could not reach her again. We spoke to one of her long-time neighbours who said that he is certain the man in question is the same man
who followed him into the bush across the road, about a week before. The bush in question is right across from Harmse’s home. It borders President Steyn Street which runs parallel to the airfield. “I believe that this man sat in the bushes under cover of the long grass, and watched the neighbourhood. Julie’s neighbour was also robbed about a week ago.” According to the police, the suspect made off with Harmse’s cell phone, laptop and a small amount of money. A case of housebreaking was opened and is currently being investigated. This has sparked an outcry among the community over social media who feel that the charge should be escalated to attempted murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

It is speculated by neighbours in the area that the attacker scoped out the neighbourhood from the cover of the bush before attacking.

By nadere ondersoek is daar egter iets besonders ontdek. The smallest art gallery in the country opens
Sandwiched between two buildings that make up the Pennefather complex in Rissik Street, Haenertsburg, was a tiny unused gap. Brainchild of local Peter Shackleton was to create the smallest art gallery in South Africa. It was recently opened showcasing local artists’ works. There’s place for one person at a time to view the artworks and photographing the gallery from the outside is only possible through the stays of the windmill in the foreground.

Velden.
— Joe Dreyer

The Hive came alive
On Wednesday, 23 August The Hive came alive with the first Wowee Wednesday presented by the new Merensky High School EC members. Originally the idea was to host this mini-show once a term, but due to popular demand it will now become a monthly initiative, promoting culture amongst the learners during breaks. EC Member, Donné Oosthuizen was thrilled with the large audience, and said: “Wow, finally, a perfect place to bring culture to the masses.” Performing during this memorable occasion were Mienké Lombard on keyboard, while Kesia Pohl and Danzi Ivy both delivered stunning vocal solos. The Plasies also took the opportunity to say goodbye to their favourite guy behind the sound desk, Ulrich Bähre, who is moving to Bethlehem.

Appreciative Grade 8’s
Nothing beats a Mother’s love Every second year Merensky High School’s moms and their boys enjoy a special function. On Saturday, 26 August it was once again time for the boys to scrub up nicely and spoil their mothers. The black and white theme was reflected in the table décor and outfits. A fun filled
BINGO game, presented by Donovan Lewis, put everybody in a relaxed mood. Motivational speaker, Elsabé Aldrich (all the way from Hermanus in the Western Cape) added the necessary bling and “je ne sais quoi” to this joyful occasion. Aldrich explained that a mother is a boy’s first love
and the compass that will forever and a day guide him into the right direction. A mother’s investment in her son’s life is worth more than gold. Merensky High School appreciates the effort made by every mother attending as well as the hostesses for their super contribution towards this successful event.

Lekwar is an eye catching landmark As a child, Frans de Bruyn (28) recalls his parents driving from Tzaneen past a wooden restaurant outside Haenertsburg. He always dreamt of what it looked like inside. One day, after matric at Ben Vorster, he stepped inside for the first time and was smitten. The restaurant, once known for its pancakes, was for sale. After three months of renovations, Frans opened the doors of Lekwar Restaurant in December 2014. He’s since added a thatch-roofed structure, the Lekwar Sport’s Bar, and a smaller thatch-roofed rondavel ideal for local produce. Frans learnt to cook from his mother and grandmother. He was accepted at the Pru Leith Hotel School in Johannesburg for the 18-month course. Frans learnt that he loves the finicky process that goes into the making of desserts. He doesn’t like exotic cheeses but Chef Adelé made him taste everything as part of his training process. His practical was at Hamilton’s Restaurant next to Leopard Creek Golf Estate in Malelane under Chef Trevor. Frans then spent a magical year in Whistler Blackcomb for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
He returned to spend almost four years cooking for VIPs at Ekland Safaris near Louis Trichardt in the Limpopo Province. He cooked for the King of Spain, Qatar royalty, and an Avatar graphic artist. While at Ekland Safaris, the manager, a Spaniard Mr Kayali, arranged to send Frans to Madrid, Spain, for a month to learn Spanish cuisine. Frans alternated between the El Paraguas and Ten Conten restaurants. The former was fine dining and expensive and the latter a more chilled lounge. Frans says their food was exquisite and cited two memorable dishes. “The one was the sea urchin dish. It was served in a soup bowl, on a base of green salt, topped by the shell and inside the delicious urchin. The other dish, at €100 for 100gram, is the most expensive I’ve ever eaten in my life. A small, thin, spaghetti-like looking fish with a calamari texture but so tender. The dish

included fried truffle chips, bursting with garlic, and a fried egg. The kitchen staffers were all from the Philippines so there was a language barrier and I also don’t speak Spanish. However, I was in the kitchen every day and wrote down what and how they were cooking. I got to sample Filipino cuisine at the staff lunches. Their main ingredients are chicken, tomato and coriander.” At Lekwar the favourite dishes are eisbein, lamb, bunny chow, trout and biltong Alfredo. Some of the original pancakes have been kept but now there’s the inclusion of a milktart pancake. What began as a special became so popular that the milktart pancake is now on the dessert menu. It’s very sweet with a kick in the form of a smidgen of a milktart shot. Lekwar is open seven days a week from 08:30 to 20:00 and Sundays from 08:30 to 16:00. Lekwar Sport’s Bar is open Mondays and Tuesdays from 14:00; Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00; Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00.

Grader might be up for auction According to the spokesperson for the GTM, Neville Ndlala, the controversial municipal grader might be put up for auction. “The grader has not yet been refurbished. In relation to the amount for the refurbishment of the grader no cost analysis was done in the past five years due to budgetary constraints. The grader is over 20 years old and we are looking at an option of auctioning it, however until the auction is done the challenges on the IDP will remain unchanged.” His comments come on the back of an enquiry we sent to his office regarding a grader mentioned in two different In-
tegrated Development Plan (IDP) documents over the course of the last five years. In the 2012-2013 IDP the grader was mentioned under the document’s sub-heading ‘Road and Storm Water Challenges’ and so too again in the current IDP draft document. In both documents an amount of R200 000 is requested for the rehabilitation of the grader. We asked Ndlala to clarify the reasons for this grader not having been upgraded in the last five years and why the same wording was used in both documents (verbatim).

Follow up
“In terms of the IDP process challenges that have not been resolved/addressed will remain the same in the IDP until they are resolved,” he said. In the meantime Tzaneen residents have to deal with sub-standard roads which are left to deteriorate year after year. Ndlala has promised that should the grader be put up for auction, the public would be notified. We have still not seen the actual grader, but we trust that this situation will now be resolved. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Recap: Who will run the pool?
As the summer approaches it is not certain whether the Tzaneen Municipal Swimming bath will be open to the public, or whether it will be manned by qualified lifeguards. Bulletin sent an enquiry to GTM spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, yesterday morning. We wanted to know whether the swimming bath would be open to the public, how the payments for access would work and whether a new chief for the facility had been appointed. Earlier this year Bulletin ran a series of investigative pieces on the appointment of Vikramjith “Vicky” Singh (60) at the swimming bath complex. According to our investigations, Singh, was employed as the swimming bath boss at the Joan Harrison swimming complex in the Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) in East London. He was first suspended on allegations of systematic fraud and then later fired on charges of gross misconduct after the Hawks raided his offices in 2014. At first the GTM were reluctant to respond and our enquiries were met with silence. Eventually by our third article, Ndlala responded by saying that a background check was conducted on Singh upon his application for
the post of lifeguard at the municipal swimming bath complex in Crown Street. “A background check was conducted with the references from both Polokwane and Buffalo City and nothing negative came out, he is doing his job properly and there is no need for alarm,” said Ndlala. Adding to this laughable situation was the GTM’s announcement that tickets to the facility could only be purchased at the municipal offices. They stated the absence of cashiers to control public access to the pool as the reason for this decision. In answer to an enquiry into the absence of cashiers, Ndlala stated that it would not be cost efficient for the municipality to employ them. “We have not appointed a cashier for the pool, it will cost us not less than three hundred thousands per person a year,” Ndlala said. “And we might need more than one cashier, it does not make business sense, we are looking for affordable ways to make tickets more accessible like using Computicket or Pick n Pay.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

MHS Blitz into Semi’s
Merensky High School’s Senior 7’s team set Pretoria ablaze last weekend during the first Sevens tournament of the season. The tournament was held on the grounds of Sutherland High School. The Plasie boys blitzed their way through all of their pool games beating Pretoria Boys
High 21-19 and sending the hosts, Sutherland, packing with a 31-15 defeat. Merensky made their way through to the semi-finals by smashing Nylstroom with 31 points to 7. In the semi’s they met up with the mighty Eldoraigne who stopped the Plasies in their tracks
with a score of 31-10. Merensky’s aspirations of winning this tournament came to an end. They did however take some valuable experience from the tournament and will be looking at the necessary change in both strategy and tactics for their next encounter.
Aquanauts rake in medals Two Plasie swimmers, Ronan Theron and Daniel Smit, competed in the Shamu Sprint Gala on Saturday, 26 August. The fourteen-year old boasts a gold medal in the 50 meter backstroke with a time of 32:22 seconds. He took silver in the 200m individu-

Teammate, Theron, achieved a bronze medal in the 50m butterfly. He also came 5th in the 200m individual medley and the tough 50m breaststroke. Smit, representing Limpopo, also entered the Small Districts Championships, hosted by Eastern Gauteng Aquatics at the Boksburg indoor pool on the 19th of August. There he swam the individual medley in 2:34:32 seconds.

Six of Merensky High School’s well-known Archery Club members braced the cold in Potchefstroom two weeks ago to compete in the North West Provincial Field Archery Championships. This was in preparation for the World Field Championships to be held in South Africa in 2018. In spite of windy conditions, the Plasie archers spent seven hours per day in the veld, aiming four arrows at 28 targets each over an average distance of 80 yards.
