Milan awaits local beauty Local beauty Kayla Crous will be jetting off to Milan, Italy, tomorrow morning to grace the ramps of Fashion Week courtesy of international modelling house, Versace. This came after the Merensky High alumni was scouted in a nursery in Cape Town earlier this year. “I had just come from the gym and was looking all the worse for wear actually as I walked through the parking lot of a local nursery,” she excitedly explained. “Two men walked up to me and introduced themselves as the owners of FanJam Modelling Agency and expressed their interest in having me in their studios.” Crous said that she was a little suspicious at first but took their business cards anyway. “I forgot about them actually, but then two months later, in May, they contacted me again and I decided to give it a shot.” One of the photographers at the agency posted a photograph of Kayla on his Instagram account which then caught the attention of a modelling scout from Versace. The scout contacted FanJam and the rest as they say is history. “Modelling was like the last thing on my mind ever,” she ex-
claimed, “and next thing I know I’m being interviewed by Versace and getting ready to fly off to Europe!” About the modelling industry, Kayla said she always had the wrong idea. “You only ever see the seedy side of the fashion game, but in South Africa everyone has been super helpful and friendly, even the other models. I can’t wait to experience the fashion week and see where this journey takes me.” Kayla will be in Europe until the end of October and has already received an offer from another prestigious fashion house, Saint Laurent. During her stay in Italy, Kayla will be conducting interviews with both fashion houses and weighing up the options. For now, the former “kaalvoet plaaskind” from Tzaneen is lapping up the possibility of a bright future most girls only ever dream about. Bulletin will keep in touch with Kayla during her stay abroad and will update on her progress. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Bulletin again asked him why it is that a man who was fired from a swimming bath complex at another municipality, was employed by the GTM into a similar position. We also requested that we be provided with Singh’s job description and remuneration and whether the pubic will be able to pay entrance fees to the facility at the turnstiles. “We have dealt with this issue before. I have provided you responses in writing with regard to his appointment. I have also explained to you why money has to be paid at the civic centre. Mr Singh has been rendering his services to the municipality and we have not received any com-
plaints, his job does not entail handling any money as moneys are paid to cashiers or paid into municipal bank account.” In March this year, we reported that no cashiers were appointed to man the entrance of the swimming facility. The reasons provided by the GTM was that it would not be financially viable. “We have not appointed a cashier for the pool, it will cost us not less than three hundred thousand per person a year,” Ndlala said. “And we might need more than one cashier, it does not make business sense, we are looking for affordable ways to make tickets more accessible like using Computicket or Pick n Pay.”
Update
In that report Ndlala claimed that the GTM has already advertised the cashier position. “I will send you a recent advert for a cashier and you can do the calculations, unfortunately I cannot discuss salaries of specific individuals.” To date, we have not yet received said advert. In the meantime, the public is welcome to make use of the beautifully restored swimming bath facility in Crown Street (a project which cost R17 000 000). The bath officially opened on the 1st of September and already some swimmers have been enjoying the warmer climate there. — Joe Dreyer joe@blletin.us.com

Letaba Sheriff of the court, Tertius Robertson, has taken legal action against the GTM, and certain individuals, following an altercation with representatives of the municipality, last week. His legal representative served a document to this effect, on the GTM’s municipal manager, chief financial officer, community services director, the Tzaneen Local Traffic Department and Mr Andre Liversage, the manager of licensing and testing at the Tzaneen Local Traffic Department, last week. The letter was delivered by hand and serves as notice for the purpose of legal proceedings against ‘Certain organs of the State Act 40 of 2002’ as well as a letter of demand against Mr Andre Liversage for damages. Receipt of the letter was confirmed by the spokesperson of the GTM, Neville Ndlala, in his response to questions from Bulletin on the matter. Robertson’s action follows events which occurred at his offices in Pieter Joubert Street on the morning of the 25th of August – a day after he attached and removed assets from the offices of the municipality. According to Robertson’s statement, uniformed officers of the Tzaneen Local Traffic Department arrived at his offices at around 08:00 that Friday morning, on instruction from the municipality, to collect the assets (which in-
cluded electronic equipment and two vehicles) which he had removed the day before. Andre Liversage had accompanied them. “I went outside to meet the group,” explained Robertson. “They said they were here to collect the GTM’s stuff and I let them in. The next moment Andre Liversage grabbed me by my shirt collar and shouted ‘bring the cuffs, I’m arresting him right now!’. I tried to get away but my movement was restricted as he really grabbed hold of me and was restraining me.” When Robertson finally managed to break free from Liversage, he rushed into his office and phoned a local security company to come and assist him as he felt threatened. Liversage allegedly continued verbally assaulting him, spewing defamatory remarks in full view of the other traffic officers. He later alleged that the Sheriff produced a firearm and pointed it at him. “I did not have my firearm with me and in fact, it was not even anywhere in my office that day. I invited Liversage to search my premises for the firearm.” According to the legal documents served on the GTM and Liversage, the Sheriff suffered damages to the extent of R300 000. This is because of infringement on his constitutional
right to freedom, attempted false imprisonment, attacks on his dignity and reputation, attacks on his good name and repute, verbal and physical assault. Robertson’s legal advisor said that because Liversage purported to act upon instruction of the GTM, and in his capacity at the Tzaneen Local Traffic Department, both the municipality and its traffic department incurred vicarious liability for his actions. Robertson also requested that, in addition to the financial compensation, disciplinary action be taken against Liversage and that a formal written apology for his actions be issued by the GTM, the Tzaneen Local Traffic Department and Liversage personally. An article was published in a local newspaper last week which stated that “a criminal case against the Letaba Sheriff, Tertius Robertson, has been opened on grounds of four charges entailing assault, crimen injuria, pointing of a firearm and malicious damage to state property inter-alia the attachment of state property and tools of the trade of Tzaneen Municipality.” The GTM said that they did not lay the charges against Robertson. At the time of going to print it was not clear who opened the case. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
We have 100 million in our account This was the statement made by the spokesperson of the GTM, Neville Ndlala, during a telephonic conversation with this reporter earlier this week. According to him, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) has its financials in order and rumours around their imminent fiscal crisis should be ignored. “You keep saying that the municipality does not have our finances in order, when in fact that is not the case. We have more than a 100 million in our
accounts and you are more than welcome to come to the office and have a look, we will show you the account,” said Ndlala. “If you see for yourself that we actually have money in our accounts, will that finally satisfy you?” This arose from the close on ten legal actions taken against the GTM during 2017 alone, coupled with the three seizures of municipal assets by the Letaba Sheriff so far. Each time, following an execution of an ‘attach and re-
move’ instruction, the GTM pays the Sheriff fees and the warrant amount almost immediately and their goods are returned or collected. We have also received information that the GTM has fallen behind on their insurance payments which resulted in a claim not being paid out. Information was also leaked that there is no money in one of the municipal accounts. “We manage to pay our debts every time a matter is brought to
our attention. Does this not show that we have our finances in order?” asked Ndlala. “Someone is feeding you wrong information.” Bulletin has accepted Ndlala’s invite to have the municipal account examined. In a second phone call on Wednesday morning, Ndlala extended the invite once again, but said that he would have to check with the Chief Financial Officer to confirm. — Joe Dreyer

‘It wasn’t me’ The driver of the red Mercedes C63 denied that he caused the three-car pileup two weeks ago on the R71. He also said that he was not speeding through the streets of the Tzaneen CBD, despite numerous video clips to the contrary. David Mhangwana (38) claimed in a telephonic interview with Bulletin, that he was not involved in the accident, but that one of the drivers of the other cars was not paying attention to the road. “I was stopped at the stop street and the driver of the white car was looking how beautiful is my car, and not watching the road.” Mhangwana said he was coming from Sapekoe, not Modjadjiskloof, and that he feels the story is very one-sided and not true. “You are a witch, because you can’t write

I stopped there by the accident and I spoke to that man who said the car behind him drove into him.” Concerning the incidents that followed the accident, Mhangwana claims that he was not speeding at all, but rather trying to get away from people were allegedly wanting to fight with him. “That video was taken where I was putting tyres on my car. They found me there and they were trying to fight me. If someone is trying to fight me, what must I do? Must I fight back or leave the place and go away from that devil?” We asked him who was allegedly trying to fight him. “Listen, when you are talking s**t I have to fight you. You are not my father, you are not a god, you are nothing! You are just from the newspaper, you understand? You are trying to fight against someone’s life and destroy someone because he is a black man. You are a f***ing racist and if you think it is that time of apartheid you are in the wrong place. Exclusive son and you do not have a god inside.” Following another spate of racial slurs, Mhangwana dropped the call. We called him back. This time he was calmer and willing to talk. He explained that he has created enemies in Tzaneen and surroundings because of his work in the fight against racism and tribalism in the area. According to him the article in the newspaper was part of the campaign against him because of the so-called enemies he made. He also denied speeding through town. “So, are your eyes a camera and you can tell what speed I was driving? That’s why I say that when you play your game, you must play a safe game because one day you will find yourself in danger. When my lawyer comes and asks you what speed I was driving, you will not be able to tell him and that will cause you a trouble.” Our conversation ended with Mhangwana expressing his wish to go back to Johannesburg because there is allegedly no life in Tzaneen for him. In the meantime, a case has been opened against Mhangwana for reckless and negligent driving of a vehicle on a public road. It is still being investigated and therefore Mhangwana has not yet been arrested. A recording of the telephone conversation is available on our website at www.bulletin. us.com. Worse off than the South Once a beautiful, peaceful mining town in the north, Phalaborwa has seen a drastic deterioration of basic service delivery, municipal infrastructure due to lack of maintenance and a sharp rise in crime over the last decade. The town which once thrived solely because of the mining activities of the Palabora Mining Company (PMC) and Foskor, has now been forced to survive off an income mostly generated by tourism to the area. The situation worsened with the sale of Rio Tinto’s share in PMC and the closure of the town’s only private health facility shortly thereafter. The state of the roads infrastructure and unkept parks and pavements in the CBD points to a municipality which has failed their mandate to provide their community with basic services. Driving from the airport in President Steyn Street, to Frans du Toit High School in Jansens Street (measuring a distance of around 2.5 kilometres if you travel along Tulbach Street) there is not one section longer than 100 metres without either potholes or tears in the tarmac. It is not clear how long ago the roads were marked either. Sections of the route resemble gravel roads and speed humps catch the visiting tourists by surprise. “We believe that the lack of
maintenance by the municipality has directly led to the degrading of our infrastructure and the subsequent loss of income from tourism,” said one guesthouse owner from this town who requested anonymity. “The bushes are filled with vagrants and criminals who sleep there at night and watch our neighbourhoods waiting for the right time to strike. We have reported the matter to the authorities numerous times, but nothing is done. That is why this town is running empty, it has been raped by this government.” Batavier Street experienced five break ins at residential properties just last week and two weeks ago an elderly resident in Monna Street was brutally assaulted in her home. We spoke to Andries Wilson, the owner of MBA Security. “Crime has been on the increase in our town over the last year or so. The most prominent at the moment is the so-called ‘remote jammer’ operations in the parking lots of our shopping centres. Frustratingly, we have managed to apprehend a few suspects in connection with this practice in the past, but these guys do not serve jail time and are soon back on the streets.” Wilson said that areas bordering dense bush and unkept parks are especially dangerous as
criminals will gather there without the risk of being spotted. One particular area he mentioned was the bush between Impala Park and the ‘Rooiskool’ where criminals are known to hide out. “We have also found a new tendency where burglars will break into a house from the roof, break open the ceiling panels and disarm the alarm system before entering the house. This has now caused us to install infrared alarm eyes pointing up at the ceilings. It is ridiculous, but a reality and we have to find new ways to combat it.” Bulletin has sent an enquiry to the spokesperson of the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality, Jonas Mahesu, to find out why the municipality has allowed their infrastructure to deteriorate to its current state, what the municipality intends on doing to clean up their act, and why their parks are not being regularly maintained. We also wanted to know whether any firebreaks exist around the town and how often they are maintained. At the time of going to print, Mahesu, was travelling to Polokwane and could not respond to our questions. We will include his responses in our next article on the dilapidated state of a once immaculate town. — Joe Dreyer

Mathebula wins again
Eugene Schutte, GTM Landfill Site management, Sylvia Rapitsi, Maria Ntimbana, Selina Mathebula, Dolly Coetzee of Protonka Recycling, Hannes Hartman, of Protonka Recycling and Tinyico Kubayi.
In sticking to their promise of paying it forward, Protonka Recycling in Tzaneen again awarded their top recyclers for their efforts this month. The monthly awards form part of the incentive-based rewards programme which Protonka rolled out last month for their contractors. “The men and women here work tirelessly to collect and sort the various recyclable materials for us each day of the week,” explained Mike Zervogiannis at the start of the programme in August. “We’ve come up with a way to motivate them while
simultaneously thanking them for their hard work. Each month we offer an incentive for the top three contractors. It will vary from month-to-month, but will include grocery and shopping vouchers for the runner-up and a grand prize for the winner.” Last month, Selena Mathebula walked away with a brand new LED Smart TV for her massive 8.673 tonne haul during the month of July. The average collection weight for a contractor is around 2 tonnes, which makes Selena’s total haul a truly astonishing feat. Mathebula repeated her performance in Au-
gust and was once again honoured as the top contractor for the month. Her prize this time round, was a brand new fridge/freezer combo. Runners up were Tinyico Kubayi and Maria Ntimbana who each received food vouchers and certificates during the hand-over ceremony on Tuesday. A Mystery Prize of a clothing voucher was awarded to Sylvia Rapitsi. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Greetings in the Name of Christ! The human mind is a marvellous creation and can be used for good or bad. The thoughts we have often govern the way we act, we can easily be influenced by outside stimuli. We can become emotional when we watch a movie, or read about something that upsets us. We need to be able to channel our thoughts in a positive way. Other people can influence the way we think and act. It is not always easy to be positive and optimistic about our future. When things do not go our way we tend to look for someone to blame, often this person is God. We want to believe that God is in control, but we have our doubts and often this leads us to lack in faith. Our mind takes over and we look for answers, often in the wrong places. We are in constant search for the meaning of life and in this search we look for external stimuli, something or the other to take our mind off the real facts. Relationships suffer and sometimes break down completely. It is said that our faith should be strong enough to overcome all obstacles, but what if our faith is weak, how do we overcome these obstacles? There are various lines of thought and we often turn to the experts in our search. Yet we need, however, to check the facts. What about our religion, is it true what the preacher said? We can readily check these facts by making certain that what they have preached is Biblically sound. Often we sit in church and listen to what is said and believe that the preacher is telling the truth, sometimes we listen with half an ear, taking in what we want to hear. All facts in the Bible have been proven to be true, so why do we have doubts? It is because we don’t fully understand what is written. This can be also said for writings by experts. In the search for the truth everything needs to be tested and especially our faith. We often become creatures of habit, trusting that our expectations will be met. How often do we give others the benefit of the doubt? Do we forgive others for their mistakes or do we just accept the fact that they will never change. The amazing fact is that God knows us with all our faults and He loves us without judgement. Agape love. Are you willing to be loved by Him or will you always think that you are not good enough. All this takes faith and a belief in something unseen, God. Blessings.

Snippets from the village Catholic Church The quaint little Catholic Church in Haenertsburg is at the top of the village, corner of Rabe and Bok Streets. It was built by the late Italian Catholic builders Guiseppe Pent and Secondo Rech in the 1950s. Known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Church had a crooked steeple for many years. When Father Willibrord retired to Belgium, the church was headed up by the former Bishop of Polokwane Fulgence Le Roy. When he retired he assigned enough funds to fix the crooked steeple and replace the rotten wooden shingled roof. The steeple was not only rotten and crooked but also home to thousands of bees. A local beekeeper was called in and three temporary beehives were set up. The bees, relocated to the temporary hives, meant that the dismantling could begin. The steeple wasn’t replicated exactly and the tired cross on top
of the spire was handsomely restored. The rotten wooden shingles were replaced with tiles that resemble wooden shingles. A well-known Catholic resident from Holland, the late Mrs Adrienne Carst-van Ogtrop, had donated an ornate Batavian slave bell to the Church when it was built. Her granddaughter, Marietta Iuel, believed it was cracked and still in the steeple. When the steeple dismantling began, and once the bees were settled elsewhere, rumour had it that the Batavian slave bell was in the Church Chairman’s office. Unfortunately it was just an ordinary, cheap, light brass bell. The Batavian bell had been removed and replaced with this cheap version. The man who apparently took the Batavian bell died years ago. He seemingly put it into one of his many storerooms but his grandson has no knowledge of a Batavian slave bell in
any storeroom. Mrs Carst-van Ogtrop was deeply chagrined by this debacle and decided to leave a different legacy to the church, a wooden Madonna in the nave to the right of the altar. The disappearance of the Batavian bell remains one of the village mysteries. The other bell at the side of the Church, and rung every Sunday, has a tale of its own. Father Williebrord had brought it all the way from Belgium after the Second World War. This bell and its twin used to hang in a Brussels church belfry. A bomb shattered the belfry and both bells crashed down on to the marble floor. One bell shattered into a million pieces and its twin was only slightly damaged. If one looks closely at the silver green bell one can still see the little holes caused by the shrapnel.

Roof leaks, Paint failures or damp problems? Water - the duel edged blade giving life on the one end and destroying everything in its path on the other. If left unchecked, water will weaken and eventually completely destroy any brickwork, plaster, concrete foundations or paving and lead to unquantifiable damage to your home or office building. Moisture build up inside walls because of water seepage causes damp to build up on the surface of the wall and leads to horrific paint and plaster failures. To repair the damage can run into hundreds of thousands of Rands and often acts as a quick fix to the exterior, without providing a permanent solution to the problem that lies beneath. Never fear though, as there is an affordable way to prevent any of the aforementioned from ruining whatever plans you had for the future of your lovely home. Introducing PCT Water Repellent Technology. This is the registered name for a chemical process or procedure to treat porous surfaces such as plaster, cement, concrete or bricks. The chemical product is in liquid organic form and after application to a cement surface a chemical reaction takes place when the product converts to an inorganic

crystalline structure inside the surface. The crystalline structure is resistant to all atmospheric acids and alkalis. After a surface has been treated with the PCT chemical range and the chemical reaction completed, a permanent insoluble water repellent surface is created. The PCT water repellent technology can be used for numerous solutions such as damp areas, roof leaks, dam liners, fish ponds and paint failures. The PCT range consists of 5 by-products, PCT Aquaflex, PCT 66, PCT 56, PCT Fibre and PCT Tie-undercoat.

Luzaan Spies kry 81,5%.

99 bright blue balloons
Another academic school year reaches its crescendo as grade 12 pupils from across the country prepare for the final months of their school careers. At Merensky High, the last term ushers in one of the school’s oldest traditions – the Matric Farewell Invitation Ceremony. At the end of August the entire class of 2017 received their much anticipated invitations to the matric farewell which will be held at the Fairview Hotel on the 27th
of September. Each of the pupils were given a balloon and the instruction to write down a positive wish for the future. The well-wishes were attached to the balloons on a string, and were released into the air during the balloon ceremony on Friday afternoon. The theme for this year’s matric farewell is “12 Years a Journey” and accurately captures the essence of what the schooling journey through grade 1 to 12 means for every pupil.

Lakers occupy second spot Stanford Lake College hosted the third of the four School Mountain Bike Series events, at their cross country track, this past weekend. The Tour de lake forms part of the Limpopo Schools Mountain Biking Series and features riders from all across the province. Each rider earns points for their finishes after each of the rounds which are then tallied up to represent a total for each school. The winning schools will then travel to Bekker in the North West in October this year, to take part in the Nationals. Currently, following an exceptionally good
weekend’s performances by the Stanfordian riders, Stanford Lake College occupies second position on the log, just a few points behind log leaders, Louis Trichardt. Merensky High is short on their heels in third spot overall. Matthew Wilkinson (18) finished in second place in the Junior Men’s Class race with Annie Guiterrez Hernandes (16) finishing first in the Youth Women category. Two other Stanfordians finished on the podium too. Lara Dando (16) followed Hernandes in third place while Herman Fourie (14) made the podium in the Sub Junior Boys category. The fourth and final round in this series takes part on the weekend of the 16th of September in Lousi Trighardt on the Hanglip forestry conservatory track. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Zanis sends Wihan to Nationals One of Tzaneen’s up and coming young gymnasts, Wihan van Eeden, is currently in training for the Men’s senior Artistic Limpopo Championships. If he is selected, Van Eeden will represent the Limpopo province at the National Gym Games in October later this year. Having been a student at the prestigious Tzaneen-based Zanis Gymnastics Academy since the age of six, Van Eeden won the North Zone Artistic Gymanstics Championships in 2016. Later he also walked away as the gold medallist in the trampoline disciplines, Mini Tramp and Black Top Trampoline. Cheryl van der Walt, the Trampoline and Tumbling Chairperson, notified Zanis earlier this week that Van Eeden was one of only six gymnasts selected into the North Zone Team that will compete at the National Trampoline Games in September. “We wish Wihan van Eeden all the best, representing Limpopo at the upcoming Trampoline Nationals. We are so proud of you!” said coach De Bruyn.

Laasgenoemde wedstryd is halftyd gestop.

Badgers lick their wounds Cricket season is in full swing and this past weekend two of the big names in the local school cricket league faced off for 50 overs of exceptional play. Stanford Lake College hosted Ben Vorster for a first team showdown in the preliminary league rounds. After winning the toss the hosts elected to bowl first, putting their visitors at the stumps. Ben Vorster’s batting line-up stood up to the task and had the Stanford bowlers with their hands in the hair at the best of times. With some fantastic movement at the crease and an undefeated score of 174 not out by top batsman Johan Harms, the visitors racked up a decent score of 290/8 at the end of their allotted 50. Stanford’s top marksmen on the day were pacers Thomas Mayes (2/42 in 9 overs) and Christiaan Schmidt (2/58 in 9 overs).
The hosts had a rough day between the wickets and were bowled out for a meagre 109 runs, handing Ben Vorster the victory. Stanford Lake will now lick their wounds and ready themselves for tomorrow’s encounter in Polokwane against the team from Mitchell House while Ben Vorster will have a weekend off. Next weekend the Vossies will play against the Nkowankowa Club team in a home game in preparation for the big away game against their neighbours, Merensky later this month. — Joe Dreyer
