timber theft on both the rural and farming communities, the members of the TTTF have successfully garnered the support of local law enforcement which has directly led to this landmark prosecution. As promising as Monday’s conviction and subsequent sentencing is, the fight is far from over. On Wednesday afternoon, forestry workers on the JDM Keet plantation were robbed of two chainsaws at gunpoint. It is reported that three men entered the plantation and approached the workers. One of them was armed with a 9mm pistol. They demanded the workers hand over the chainsaws and a cellphone before fleeing the scene. Within minutes, Canine Security was activated and their bloodhounds picked up the trail. Soon after, the SAPS were called in to take over the matter after the dogs tracked

the suspects to a compound in the area. Yesterday (Thursday) morning, the very same suspects, wearing the same clothes as the day before, were seen in the Halewood plantation. Security was again activated and the suspects fled. At the time of going to print, the search for the suspects was still underway and it was not clear whether they had been apprehended. There have been a number of other related arrests and vehicle seizures in the past two weeks with a list of cases now being investigated against known timber thieves and their associates. Through a very well maintained communications and information sharing network, foresters now have the ability to warn each other of suspicious activity, suspicious looking vehicles transporting timber off their plantations and are able to react to
emergency calls swiftly. Trucks transporting stolen timber have been stopped all the way down to Polokwane because of the communications among vigilant members of the forum. The TTTF have formed very close relationships with senior advocates, magistrates and prosecutors within the Justice Department ranks as well as senior members of the SAPS, who have pledged their allegiance to the fight against this scourge within the timber industry. Bulletin will publish updates on the outcomes of the various cases as they make their way before the courts and keep you updated on the developments in the fight against timber related crimes. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The days of timber theft syndicates terrorizing the local forestry industry are numbered. The first of many suspects was charged and sentenced to two years in prison on his first offence, in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s court on Monday. Carlos Pamire, an illegal immigrant from Zimbabwe, was found in possession of 480 poles he stole off the Barett’s farm, Carthona, near Modjadjiskloof in July this year. He was apprehended by members of the forum, Canine Security, and his truck which he used to transport the stolen timber was confiscated by the Asset Forfeiture Unit. Since the formation of the Tzaneen Timber Theft Forum (TTTF) a month ago, there has been a decline in timber theft cases across all plantations in the area. Buitelug eetplek, kerk, kampplek, kroeg of net ‘n ontspanningsarea?
— Jan Publiek

Stadiums more important than water? Not a week after the violent service delivery protests in Bolobedu over water shortages, and residents in Modjadjiskloof are experiencing the same problem. It would appear as though Lepelle Water, the service provider responsible for supplying water to the municipalities within the Mopani District, is struggling to adequately service their jurisdiction. On Monday morning the Modajdjiskloof’s water reservoir level was at 0% according to the municipal spokesperson, Lovers Maenetje. Although she apologized profusely on behalf of the Greater Letaba Municipality, Maenetje labelled the emergency situation as a ‘challenge’ and stated that the water shortage was because of the electricity supply interruption. She said that Lepelle Water
was unable to pump water to the reservoir without power. To remedy the situation the GLM deployed water tankers to the neighbourhoods. “We are of the opinion that because of the situation in Bolobedu which sparked a visit by the Limpopo premier, Stanley Mathabatha, Lepelle has now redirected water supply to those areas in order to calm the community down. Modjadjiskloof has been affected because of it, in what appears to be a shifting of the problem from one area to the next, rather than upgrading, repairing and maintaining their aged networks,” said a confidential source within the municipality. Coupled with the week-long water shortage, Modjadjiskloof also had no electricity supply for a number of days during this
period which literally brought businesses and households to a standstill. Some residents have had to give notice to their domestic workers as they were unable to do any work without water or power. “We cannot pay our people if they cannot work, it is very sad, but we will have to let some domestic workers go. The GLM’s failures will lead to joblessness.” The years of service delivery failures by the GLM has led to former Modjadjiskloof mayor, Pieter van Niekerk calling or the reestablishment of a community forum through which meaningful discussion could be had with the municipal management in an effort to rectify the dire situation. “We have to get council to change the Integrated Development Plan (IDP). We as the community need to attend these IDP meet-
ings because it is there that we can put pressure on the municipality. The GLM wants to build four new stadiums and several new libraries. Currently there is a new library in Mokwakwaila standing empty without books since it was completed in December last year. Stadiums costing millions and requiring security are not maintained nor used. We must have a meeting where all these issues can be discussed and a way forward planned. There is irregular expenditure of more than R22.8 million. The report says this is under investigation. These investigations have been carrying on, some, for more than a year without any outcome. The water reticulation system needs an urgent upgrade and the issues facing Lepelle need to be discussed,” said DA councillor, Frederick Pohl.
Update: Massive trench has still not been repaired Boundary Street has still not been repaired almost two months after a trench was dug across it to repair a burst water main. Despite enquiring on the plans to fix this road, the GTM’s spokesperson, Neville Ndlala has still not offered us an explanation. In the meantime the road has deteriorated even more and is now becoming a serious hazard to road users and pedestrians. Has the Greater Tzaneen Municipality chosen to blatantly ignore the outcries of their community or could it be that a lack of funds in the municipal maintenance budget is to blame?
Ndlala has promised to show Bulletin the municipality’s bank statements and substantiate his claims of a R100 million balance in their running account. This has not yet happened and we have still not heard any word on the matter from his office. Should it be true, it would mean that the municipality does possess the finances to repair their ailing roads infrastructure, but that the funds are either being mismanaged or applied to other projects such as the upgrading of rural infrastructure. Criminal elements have also taken advantage of the situation as just this
week a woman reported an attempted hijacking at the four way intersection connecting Boundary and Adshade Streets. According to reports two men attempted to open her vehicle’s boot while she was stopped at the intersection. When they failed, they tried to gain access to her car by pulling at the door handles. Road users are urged to be vigilant and extremely careful when passing through this intersection as there is at this stage no indication of when the situation will be rectified, if indeed at all. – Jeff Jackson jeff@bulletin.us.com

Shame on you BPM!

Wildevy Park was once a beautifully green recreational hub in the centre of Phalaborwa’s business district. Through the complete failure of the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality’s parks and recreational department to pay penance to their mandate, this park is now nothing more than a very distant memory. Where children once played freely among the stalls of the annual bazaar held here, adults now dare not wander after dark for fear of being mugged. The trees framing its borders have all but died. The thick green lawn which covered it from end to end has disappeared and the once fully functional ablution block at its centre is now a graffiti covered shelter for vagrants. There was once a three-tiered fountain
at one section which acted as a popular spot for wedding photographers. This has dried up and been left to the elements. Beer bottles, soda tins, plastic bags and wooden pallets mark the years of neglect in the moat around it where water used to run. “We used to be proud of this park. It was a very popular spot for flea markets, bazaars and a special event called Midnight Madness where the community came together at night at this park and we held mass-braais with stalls and entertainment for the whole family. Now we are too scared to go near the park.” It has also been reported that Wildevy Park is well-known among the local youth as the place to buy your recreational drugs. “They sell dagga and cocaine from the toilet building in the middle of the park because there is no security there and it is out of sight. They target school children specifically.” A private security official who re-
quested anonymity confirmed these reports. “You know, our biggest struggle at the moment is with the drugs that flood Phalaborwa. These dealers come into town from the city and they move around targeting children as young as primary school age. Wildevy Park is a perfect spot for them to conduct their business as it is nice and central and with no policing.” Why has this park been allowed to deteriorate? Does the BPM have any plans in place to restore it to its former glory and what is the annual budget earmarked for parks and recreation? Bulletin has sent an enquiry to the spokesperson of the BPM, Jonas Mahesu, for clarity on these questions and we hope to receive a response from him in time for our next deadline as we have still not received any feedback on the enquiry we sent to him two weeks ago regarding the informal traders on the town’s pavements. We will publish his response to that enquiry in our next edition.
Phalaborwa’s patchwork pacification Following a report on the state of the roads within the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, roads crews have started patching various streets last week. The first of the affected roads, Tulbach Street, which leads from the Kruger Gateway airport in Pres Steyn Street right through to the town’s only high school, saw some major reparations being done on Friday. Although President Steyn Street itself is still a pothole ridden nightmare, it does appear as though the R4,7 million roads budget is being applied to the purpose it was originally intended for – albeit only after a public outcry through the media. Jonas Mahesu, the spokesperson for the
Bed
BPM, claimed in a previous article on the matter that his municipality has a daily maintenance team tasked with the inspection of roads and the plugging of potholes. It is very apparent that this has not been the case for quite some time. Certain areas have been badly neglected such as the infamous Nollie Bosman Street, Janssens Street which circumvents the high school, Grosvenor Street running past the hospital and the section of President Steyn Street which serves as the main entrance to the airport. President Kruger, one of the main routes to and from the Palabora copper mine, is in desperate need of repair too. There is no discernible plan to the main-
tenance crew’s operations and currently it would appear as though streets are earmarked at random. Furthermore, the methods used to plug the potholes are not aesthetically pleasing and seem to be a quick-fix by municipalities to pacify their rate payers. The use of instant tar mix is a method now widely used within the Mopani district and is by no means a permanent solution. Bulletin has sent another media enquiry on the mater to Mahesu and we hope that we will have some feedback from him that will shed some light on the matter in our next article. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Greetings in the Name of Christ! In Luke’s gospel (Luke 24:13:35) we read the story of Jesus appearing to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, based on this story the Emmaus movement was started in the late 1940’s by the Spanish Roman Catholic Cursillo de Christindad (a short course in Christianity) It came to South Africa in 1990 from the United Methodist Church in the USA. The movement is now ecumenical in its practice. Emmaus is seeking to find authentic expression in the cultures of Africa, while retaining the wealth of Christian experience from other cultures. God is using Emmaus in Southern Africa to bring reconciliation between races and renewal to Christians and their churches. The movement has often been thought of as a secret sect because those attending have been requested not to discuss what happens on the course for the sole reason of not spoiling the experience for others wanting to attend. I did the Walk as it is called in 2011 and have worked on it ever since when I had the time. I have seen people change their perspectives and their faith increased, in fact they have become more open to others and true friendships have formed. They have returned to their various churches and become more involved in the activities there. There is no magical formula used on the Walk but I believe that the Holy Spirit works in each of those attending. It is an amazing experience and each attendee experiences different aspects during the Walk. It is not a physical walk rather a spiritual one. The main purpose of Emmaus is to bring about spiritual renewal to Christians who will, in turn, bring new life and vision in their respective churches, home, workplaces and community. One of the primary strengths is the follow up. I would encourage all Christians who are open to experience the grace and love of God in new ways through the Christian Community, to attend a Walk. There are two walks one for the men and one for the woman. Both take place one week after the other. Blessings.

Gone are the days of little choice with crude accommodation like an uncomfortable bed, a long drop outside, no TV and little else other than a magnificent view. A former residential double-storeyed village house in President Street has just hit the market as the ultimate in décor for luxury self catering. Stuart Allen together with his wife Minki took six months to renovate and decorate Highview into two separate units. Upstairs sleeps two and downstairs sleeps six. The upstairs kitchen, where candy floss pink and white décor dominates, is best described by Scotsman Stuart, “It’s not exactly my taste but it’s a knockout when it comes to first impressions.” Upstairs is top drawer from the crystal glasses and candelabras to everything imaginable in the candy floss pink kitchen. Minki says, “I’m a foodie and must have proper utensils and proper pots. All the best tools are supplied for the braai area as well. There are six different teas as well as popcorn makers with the popcorn supplied. I love comfort so have created Highview around Jeanné le Roux poses in the candy floss pink kitchen. my comfort. Hence the Cloud 9 mattresses, the best duvets, pillow cases, linen and towels. There’s also DSTV in all the bedrooms.” The downstairs has striking black with chilli red décor in the openplan kitchen, dining and living room area. Heading up Highview is Jeanné le Roux (29). A committed teacher, Jeanné decided to follow her heart as well as change careers and moved to Haenertsburg in December. Jeanné and fiancé Craig, son of Stuart and Minki, had met and fallen in The verandah view across the village and into the distant mountains. love at a cocktail lounge called
Steamworks in Fourways two years ago. Jeanné studied BCom Human Resources at Potchefstroom University and went on to complete her TED through UNISA. She taught for eight years and enjoyed Learnwrite School in Randpark Ridge.
A bird’s eye view of the downstairs kitchen cum dining area.
Learnwrite is a private remedial school for emotionally challenged children who don’t cope in a main stream school. Jeanné’s work encompassed aspects like bullying, getting children to cope with the loss of one or both parents, ADD and ADHD. Now Jeanné heads up both the coffee cum restaurant Minki’s in Rissik Street as well as Highview. For bookings at Highview phone Jeanné on 079 881 2628.
The Spring Fair is here The Cheerio Tea Garden outside Haenertsburg will be open from 09:00 to 17:00 daily during the Spring Fair starting on 23 September. Niel Geldenhuys (30) from Johannesburg is your host at the Tea Garden. Niel prepared a yummy trout sandwich with figs but his love is for the homemade desserts. There’s a wide choice ranging from lemon cheese cake to peppermint crisp tart and apple crumble with vanilla and cinnamon custard. Work up an appetite by first walking through the spectacular gardens where the azaleas and flowering trees are absolutely spectacular. It’s a photographer’s dream, so take your cameras along and snap away at this unNiel Geldenhuys who is running rivalled sight. the Cheerio tea Garden.

Taking a break from Facebook helps boost psychological well-being. The drive to communicate other than face to face began more than a century ago. A Scottish scientist living in the USA, Alexander Graham Bell, invented the telephone in 1876. Letter writing started dwindling. Fast forward to 3rd April 1973, to Motorola senior engineer Martin Cooper. Martin stood in midtown Manhattan in America, called rival telecommunications company, Bell Labs in nearby New Jersey, and informed them he was speaking via mobile phone. The era of mobility and instant communication had arrived. Meanwhile the history of the Internet began with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. Commercial Internet service providers (ISPs) began in the late 1980s. The World Wide Web became publicly available in 1991. Inventor of www, British scientist Tim Berners-Lee, fundamentally changed the world. By 2000, around 100 million people had access to the internet. Chat rooms began and meeting people from different walks of life began. There was the Cape fisherman off the west coast, who went by the alibi Snoek. He extended an invitation to come aboard his ship at 04:00. It became common for people to engage socially online. But the huge boom of social media was still to come. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook and the earth tilted. Facebook is the number one social media website and currently has over a billion users. Twitter, a service that allows only 140 characters or less per tweet, was created by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Noah Glass and Evan Williams and has over 500 million users.

Blooming Onion Crispy, batter-fried onions that resemble flower petals. This is an easy and impressive looking appetizer that’s great to share. All you need is a few simple ingredients. You need! 1 large white onion 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons paprika 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon oregano salt and pepper to taste 2 large eggs 1 1/2 cups milk vegetable oil ipping sauce (optional) Instructions Slice off the top of the onion and peel off the skin while keeping the root intact. Slice wedges or petals vertically in the onion, about 3/4 inch apart on the outside. Allow your flower to open. In a medium bowl, combine flour, spices, salt and pepper. Dip the onion into to cover completely, and shake off excess. In another medium bowl, beat eggs and add milk. Gently dip into egg mixture and cover completely. Return onion to the flour and cover completely; freeze for 30 min to set. Meanwhile, fill a deep fryer or medium saucepan with 3 inches of oil and heat to 200°C. Place onion into hot oil petal side down; allow to fry for several minutes until golden and then flip onion and repeat. Using a slotted spoon, remove onion to a paper-towel-lined plate to cool. Stuffed chicken breasts
with cream cheese, tomatoes and bacon (Serves 2)
You need! 2 Chicken Breasts Cream cheese (1 tablespoon for each breast) Cherry tomatoes (sliced in half for each breast) 4 Slices of bacon (2 for each breast) Preparation 1. Slice the breasts straight down the middle, without piercing the back, to create a funnel to add the cheese and tomatoes. 2. Add the cream cheese and tomatoes to the breast by sliding them into the funnel. 3. Next place the bacon under the breasts and wrap them around the chicken and secure them with toothpicks. *toothpicks are important as they keep the chicken together….keep a few for braai time just in case the bacon shrinks a bit. Braai Time Cook chicken breasts on medium to high heat, calculated by putting your hand above the grid for about 5-8 seconds without needing to remove it. It will take about 15 – 20 minutes to cook the chicken, so throw it on and flip it about four times or so. Just remember to make sure to check that the toothpicks and bacon stay in place. To check if it’s done, cut through the thickest part of the chicken breast, and if it’s white, then it’s ready to eat. https://www.thesouthafrican.com/day-12-stuffed-chicken-breasts-withcream-cheese-tomatoes-and-bacon/

Tritech silver for Tzaneng Seven learners from Tsaneng secondary school, a farm school situated on the grounds of Westfalia, made history for being invited to participate, for the first time, in the very popular Tritech National Science Competition. It took place on Friday and Saturday 15 and 16 Sepetmber 2017 Hosted by the Tritech EXCO on the grounds of Merensky High school. These seven learners worked in four groups and have identified two problems at school namely water wastage and unhygienic ambition facilities. Through rigorous experiments they found solutions to these problems Decricia Setshogoe and Muhle Ndlazi got a silver medal for finding a way to save
133 litres of water per day by using a more effective way for learners to wash hands at school. The other tree groups were rewarded bronze medals for their work: Faith Maginya found a way to save water while washing dishes, used at the feeding scheme, at school. Phetho Mahlo, Kamogelo Ramakgolo found a cost effective way to keep the school toilets hygienic and Kagiso Mahasha and Thabane Monyela found a good solition to unblock the pit toilets at school and keep them odour free. Through this competition the learners have gained valuable life skills and their projects had a positive impact on their school community.

Stanford dominate Heuwelkruin In this week’s Super League cricket encounter between Stanford Lake College and Curro Heuwelkruin, the badgers seemed to regain their good form by winning the match with nine wickets in hand. Losing the toss, Stanford was sent into the field with Heuwelkruin batting first. Exceptional bowling by the Stanfordian speedsters led to the Curro batsmen finding themselves in trouble between the stumps and subsequently heading back to their bunker with a meagre 80 run tally to defend. The pick of the bowling crop was Thomas Mayes who scalped three wickets on the day.
The rest of the wickets were shared among Abhey Patel, Christiaan Schmidt and Jaryd Trueman. During their brief stint at the crease, Stanford made light work of the total required, scoring the 80 runs with just one wicket down. Christian Schmidt, the Badger’s star batsman, smacked 29 runs not out. This victory over Heuwelkruin follows on their 9 wicket victory over Polokwane’s Mitchell House the week before which has secured them in the top three spot on the log standings. If Standofrd keep up their current form, they could very well meet Ben Vorster

“Rather lead from the back, cause from the back you can pick-up everyone who is down and out” - Warren Whiteley. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
