Daar was twee gewapende verdagtes.

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

One of the AVs said, “Even if we convince only one person to change their eating habits, it’ll be worthwhile.” Although the Limpopo Province is regarded as a meat-eating province, Woolworths at The Mall of the North has a fair choice of vegan food. The recent Woolworths addition of a falafel wrap is commendable. However one of its ingredients is eggs, which makes this falafel wrap vegetarian.

This week started off badly for fifteen passengers of a minibus taxi which overturned between Modjadjiskloof and Tzaneen on Monday afternoon. According to eye witnesses, the taxi was travelling towards Modjadjiskloof from Tzaneen when it suddenly started swerving out of control. “We were driving just behind the taxi,” said one witness, “as we approached the bridge before Wesfalia, we saw the back tyre burst and the vehicle swerved out of control before it started to roll.” Thankfully, the barriers along the side of the road prevented the minibus from leaving the road and dropping down the 20
metre gorge beneath the bridge. There were fifteen passengers on-board, including the taxi driver. Nobody was killed in the accident and remarkably only four passengers suffered some injuries. The injured were treated by paramedics of the ER24 team who arrived on the scene literally within minutes after the accident. Traffic offer from Modjadjiskloof responded swiftly and managed the traffic in the area with the highest efficiency insuring that the paramedics could assist their patients in safety. Bulletin spoke to the owner of the taxi who also arrived at the
scene. “I am just thankful that there were no fatalities and that everyone was seen to in time. We will now have a look at the cause of the crash and try and prevent it from happening in the future. It is very sad and I feel terribly sorry for the passengers.” An hour later, the road had been cleared and traffic continued as usual. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals and the wreckage towed away. At the time of going to print it was not clear whether a case of reckless and negligent driving had been opened by the SAPS. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Uitzicht Drive closed indefinitely The DA in Modjadjiskloof will table a motion during the next council meeting for the reallocation of council funds towards the upgrading of the town’s water works and sewerage system. This is according to the DA Councillor in the Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM), Frederick Pohl. “We feel that the funds currently allocated for the building of stadiums and libraries could be much better utilized in the upgrading of the town’s ailing water supply system,” Pohl said. “How many more days are we going to have to struggle without water?” His comments come on the back of a massive sinkhole which formed in one of the neighbourhood streets on Sunday afternoon. A huge portion of Uitzicht Drive collapsed when the soil beneath the tarmac gave way. The road surface collapsed under its own weight. It is suspected that this was caused by a combination of a leaking water pipe that ate away at the layers of earth, and shoddy workmanship. “Around 2008 when the town’s sewer reticulation system was constructed by the controversial SGL Consulting Engineers (the company in which Julius Malema’s family trust holds a significant stake) on behalf of the Mopani District Municipality, this road was removed. When they reconstructed the road, it would appear as though the compacting was not done properly. There is also no sign of proper foundations,” Pohl speculated. “It has not been confirmed yet, but I am certain this is the origin of the trouble here.” On Sunday evening Pohl tried in vain to contact any top official in the GLM to request
that the road be closed off immediately. When he failed to reach any of the officials, Pohl asked the community for barrier tape, and they cordoned off the road themselves. The following morning the GLM had still not responded to the matter and instead sent a road working team to the site. The team consisted of four labourers armed with nothing more than two spades and a pick.
DA Councillor Frederick Pohl explains the situation to the GLM road crew.

then left shortly thereafter, leaving the gaping hole in the road. Modjadjiskloof’s water was restored later that afternoon, but Uitzicht Drive has still not received any attention, nor has any plan been announced to fix it. This latest debacle points to the municipality’s inability to adequately maintain their machinery and infrastructure, or be ready to respond to urgent matters such as this. At the time of going to print there was no further information available on the matter. We will be in contact with the municipality and keep our readers updated in our next edition. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The Message Dr Jan Truter
Daar is geen kitsoplossings wanneer jy so voel nie. Ek versterk jou, Ek help jou, Ek hou jou vas!”

Building Your Corporate Family Many people cringe when they hear their boss mention the idea of team building. Many excuses to not attend or partake in these activities are conjured up by that one term. However, according to Forbes.com, it is probably the best investment any business owner, director or CEO can make. “It builds trust, mitigates conflict, encourages communication, and increases collaboration. Effective team building means more engaged employees, which is good for company culture and boosting the bottom line. It can also be adventurous and enjoyable if you do it with a little pizzazz.” When living in one of the most beautiful and lush areas in the country, an iconic team building day would be one spent outdoors. So let’s take a trip to the adventurous side of team building with Magoebaskloof Adventures based in George’s Valley. Offering a wide range of products for employers to choose from, these packages include a great balance between physical adventure and thought-provoking challenges to encourage all of the following: teamwork, thoughtfulness, overcoming fear, troubleshooting and strategic planning, building trust and possibly the most important of all, the value of fun and a good laugh bringing people closer together. “Our mission at TeamWorx is to facilitate extraordinary experiences that stimulate personal growth and team development. TeamWorx fo-
cuses on Human Capital Development where we use adventure as a powerful catalyst to excite, motivate and unite your people. AEL (Adventure related Experiential Learning) is the methodology at the heart of our team building interventions, programs and courses which are specifically designed to enhance the performance and productivity of the individual, the team and ultimately the organization.” - (www. magoebaskloofadventures.co.za) A note to employers Team building significantly contributes towards employee motivation and building trust among the employees, thereby ensuring better productivity. Even the most simple and common team building exercises for communication, success and improved team performance will add incredible value with noticeable results. A note to employees Let go and have “Fun, fun, fun!” An opportunity to get to know the people that you spend a large chunk of your days with and see this activity as a valuable breakaway from the mundane, the stress, the daily grind. So to both employers and employees: step into the sun, climb the challenge and be grateful for team building. It could very well be the best day with your “corporate family” and can only contribute to the days in the office that will follow.
Sequoia – take what you need It’s certainly not what you expect when you first drive through the gates that lead to the little piece of Bohemia nestled in among the indigenous gardens of the Sequoia Garden Retreat. At first glance one assumes to be greeted with another of the many guest lodges scattered across the mountain outside Haenertsburg. But, then you take a stroll through the diverse plantations, past the bee hives, across the quaint wooden bridge that blankets the bass pond and into one of three azalea maze walks that lead you up the hillside. And suddenly that assumption is shattered. This place literally whispers “calm down and just breathe me in.” Standing on the hillside overlooking the vast expanse of botanical beauty you are surrounded by serenity. Three romantic cottages peer back at you through the colourful blossoms on the other side of the pond while a mountain biking trail to the left beckons

your free spirited self to follow its winding curves into the Dawn Redwood forest. Sequoia Garden Retreat wants to be explored. With many plans for the future development of this mystical hideaway, couples will soon be able to enjoy an outdoor wedding among the blossoms. Intimate outdoor camping and picnic gatherings with possible live entertainment and even an outdoor movie night, are also on the cards. For more information on arguably one of the more exciting venues in the Limpopo province, visit www.sequoiastay.com or check out their Facebook page. Alternatively, treat your senses and drive up to Sequoia and meet the young couple fuelling the growth of not just the surrounding flora, but the offerings of this beautiful place. You’ll find them just a kilometre down the road from Cheerio Gardens along the “L” Road as you head towards Haenertsburg.

All Work and No Play Makes Jack A Dull Boy The end of the year is drawing near. For many it is a time to start planning holidays and silly season fun. Employees start daydreaming about day’s in the sun on the beach celebrating some well-deserved time off. Employers, on the other hand, are taking stock and reflecting on the year and are considering whether a celebration for everyone’s hard work and commitment is worth the costs. In today’s economic climate it is understandable that many companies decide to give their year-end function a miss, however, the problem is that this in one of the most important events for any business. The benefits stretch beyond the obvious
“Thank you for your hard work” as it also provides the perfect opportunity for employers to get to know their staff better and therefore allow them to manage them better. Year-end functions are also a very effective marketing tool as there are no concrete rules as to who, you as a business owner or manager, would like to extend the invitations to. For those companies who go the extra mile to invite their clients and service providers, not only show gratitude for their support, building on long term relationships, but also offer these clients an inside look into their business. For any business built on a solid internal struc-
ture this could be a very powerful marketing tool. Even the most modest human being thrives on recognition and most certainly deserves it. A well known HR team conducted research that proved that “businesses that recognize their employees have about 14% more productivity than those who don’t.” Other surveys “showed that businesses with high employee engagement surpass those who don’t by a 22% in profitability.” And “gratuitous employers solidify the bond and loyalty with their employees.” This bond and loyalty is the heart of any business; the
blood pumping through its operative and logistical veins; and a successful, fun and positive yearend function, could be just what you need to clean out any toxins that may be lingering in the ‘bloodstream’ of your business. Wow your clients with a jaw-dropping event, that does not need to cost a limb or two, but just has to show-off what a fantastic team you have and spread the bond and loyalty. And above all remember “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, so don’t let boredom or low motivation infect your business and start planning your perfect year-end function today.
Choosing your place to stay Not only is the internet filled with accommodation establishments, in every town or city it could feel like every street and every main road or mountain pass has at least one sign-post directing you to the ‘next best’ place to unpack your suitcase. When planning your holiday or weekend escape it could feel like a pretty daunting task to choose the right place to stay. Every place to stay is as unique and different as every traveler and so it would be wise to do some thoughtful planning and research before making that ‘non-refundable’ booking. First, ask yourself, what matters most to you. Is the type of establishment more important than the price or is location what you are after? Refine your search but don’t stop there. Perhaps you need a place where your furry friend is welcome or one that offers a hearty meal or two. Don’t forget, there are always specials offers too and some very interesting places like a tree-house or a stable. Below is a list of things you may what to consider when making your “What matters most” list: • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Price Location Ambience Local Flavour Amenities Luxury Loyalty Programs Eco-Friendliness Family-Friendliness Pet-Friendliness Romance Unique experiences Meals
Once you have narrowed down your list, pick up the phone. Within the first few seconds you will already be able to get an impression of what you can expect from the place. Below is a list of suggested questions Smartertravel.com advises you to ask to help you make the most informed decision. • • • • • • • •
Does one side of the hotel have a better view or less noise? Is the hotel near public transportation? Is there a restaurant, and is breakfast included in your rate? How far is the hotel from the beach/ theater/meeting/convention center/ highway? How safe is the neighborhood? What is the hotel’s cancellation policy? Does the hotel offer smoking/ non-smoking rooms? What are the hotel’s environmental policies?
Never be afraid to search a little longer and dig a little deeper. There is often a review or experience that requires a little more effort to find, but could offer the most valuable information that could save you a lot of trouble or make your holiday unforgettable – in a good way!

Five Top Places to Play Outdoors Debengeni Waterfalls (Magoebaskloof, Tzaneen) is undoubtedly one of the most magestic places to visit in the area. Breathtaking scenery, idyllic picnic spots, water pools to swim in, rocks to slide down and hiking trails with sleepover spots, it promises a full day of fun, adventure and laughter for everyone. Even mountain biker’s can enjoy a challenging 17km route, called the Debengeni Downhill Ride. Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail (Magoebaskloof, Tzaneen) is beautiful beyond description. As the rainfall in the area is very high in summer and the altitude of the mountains ensures every present moisture, there is abundance of lush forestry, flowing streams, fungi and ferns along the way. The trail offers several options from two days to five days in durations. There are six huts along the route and take the form of old forestry buildings or modern purpose-built wooden chalets. Along the route one passes some of the largest gum trees in South Africa. The Dap Naude Dam lies close to Waterfall hut. The Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail is one of the most beautiful trails in the country. It needs a certain degree of fitness to complete the
trail especially the five day route. The two day routes are less demanding and suitable for family hikers. The trail is accredited by Southern Africa Trail Owners Association and bookings can be made through Komatiland Foresty (Pty) Limited +27 12 481 3615 or e-mail ecotour@safcol.co.za The Serala Loop (Wolkberg, Tzaneen), one of the smaller routes within the Wolkberg Wilderness Area, is said to be one of the country’s jewels and best kept secrets. This route can be done in three or four days and include many river crossings, 8 in day one,
and where you can see alpine grasslands and much more. If the weather allows, one can even climb Serala Peak (2024m) which in itself an experience beyond description. The Mountain Guide will take you on a hike of a lifetime. For more information feel free to contact 082 652 1490 or email info@ mountainguide.co.za. Muti wa Vatsonga Open-air Museum (Merensky Nature Reserve, near Giyani), also known as the Tsonga Kraal Museum, is a traditional Tsonga homestead where everyday life is portrayed. Here you can learn about the Northern Tsonga tribe and see their many traditions. Various customs and festivals are honored here at the museum. The village was established in 1974 and showcases the different building styles of the Tsonga people. It is an open-air reconstruction using mopane poles, clay from anthills and paint made from different coloured soils. To arrange your visit contact 082 974 1919. Tzaneen Dam (Tzaneen), is known as a fishing ‘hot spot’ and forms part of the bass angling competition circuit. It is a perfect family outing and the nature reserves offers great spots for jet-skiing, boating, canoeing and fishing. It is important to know that there are hippos and crocodiles so be vigilant, as the dam offers a real refreshing swim on a hot summer’s day. There is also camping and accommodation in the reserve so no children need to be asking to stay “just a little longer please”.

Phalaborwa is almal

Aces bow to Stars The Limpopo T20 Series ended its round-robin playoffs in the Capricorn District this weekend when the Aces Promotional Team took on Stars CC. The Aces team played up a league in the Super League and managed to still finish in the middle of the pack despite a loss against Stars. The Aces Club, sponsored by Nashua Limpopo, has two teams playing the league. The Promotional team consists of a number of youngsters including a 12-year old player. The idea behind this is to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy the game. Their Super League team finished in third spot. Stars C will now take part in the T20 Limpopo semi-final against the winners of the Vhembe, Mopani or Waterberg leagues. The outcomes of these leagues will be published in our future editions. On Saturday though, the Aces Promo team put up a good show when they elected to bat first against a for-
midable Stars CC bowling attack at the Nirvana oval. First batter up was the young Justyn Trueman, a star cricketer at Stanford lake College. The youngster showed great composure to score an impressive 62 runs off 58 balls before he was finally caught in the outfield off the bowling of Sharif. Trueman’s inning recorded the highest runs of the day. The rest of the batting line-up incuded a mixed bag of results for the young team who finally left the field on 132 runs to prepare for the Stars onslaught. In their innings the Stars CC team, considered by those in the know to be a formidable local force in the league, struggled to find their rhythm against the newcomers. Trueman took advantage of the situation and scalped the opening batsman, Arsad Patel, for just 10 runs. Asif Gogta scored the highest runs for the Stars with his 39 not out by the end of play to help his team to a two-run victory on the final ball of the match. The Stars CC will now play in the semi-finals against the Mopani League winners in their bid to reach the League finals at the end of October. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com Photos by: GKT SportPics
