Fast, Faster, Fourie Gerhardus Fourie (15) the lightning fast pacer from Merensky High school, delivers another of his 135 km/h balls into the nets. Photo: Joe Dreyer
The country’s fastest bowler at school level is a 15-year old speedster from Merensky High just outside Tzaneen. Gerhardus Fourie was timed at 135.4 km/h during the recent Audi Q5 Fast Track competition series held in conjunction with Cricket South Africa in all major provinces. According to their systems, his lightning attack makes Fourie the country’s fastest school-level pacer. “Though I am walking on the clouds right now, I am pretty sure that there must be one or two other bowlers in the country that match or even better the speeds that were recorded during the Audi Fast Track series,” said Fourie humbly. “They say however that this is the
fastest they recorded in all the provinces.” Fourie was born into cricket and grew up next to the oval in Louis Trichardt watching his father captain the Far North side. He is currently in Merensky’s hostel, but travels back home over weekends where he takes up his place in the batting and bowling line up for the Louis Trichardt club team, of which he is an active member. An outstanding wicket keeper, Fourie plays in both the Merensky First, and u/15 teams - captaining the latter. As a number four batsman, he sports a descent 44 average. It is his bowling stats that impress however. “My best innings was against the club team
from Phalaborwa (Frans du Toit High School does not have a cricket team) where I took 4 wickets for 20 runs in four overs. I did a bit better in primary school where I took 6 for 24.” During the Audi Q5 Fast Track event, Fourie not only secured a Kookaburra sponsorship, but had the chance to shake hands with his bowling hero (and former Plasie) Dale Steyn. “I was so motivated with Dale there, I bowled my best just to impress him. He is and has always been my aspiration, so having him there was just amazing.” We asked him if there were any local batsmen he was not able to better on the local
ovals. Without hesitation and with a sly grin on his face he mentioned Ben Vorster’s star batsman Johan Harms and the PHS maestro, Tiaan Enslin. “Johan and Tiaan are the best batsmen in our province by a long shot and the two of them are extremely difficult to face as a bowler. I think I may have managed to scalp Johan’s wicket once, but it doesn’t happen too often.” The three youngsters are also close friends and play in the provincial cricket team together. “Those two are to me what AB De Villiers is to Dale Steyn,” he chuckled. — Joe Dreyer

The quick reaction by local security companies ensured the safe return of a vehicle that was stolen at Fairview Lodge at around 19:45 on Monday evening. A salesman from Gauteng was visiting Tzaneen and staying over at the lodge when he was accosted by a group of suspects who tied him up and took the keys to his company vehicle. The delivery van was filled with cigarettes. Reports state that the salesman was sitting outside his room at the lodge when he was overpowered by a group of suspects who tied him up and took the keys to the van. The suspects fled in the direction of Mieliekloof. The man was found by a security guard who alerted lodge management and the local police. The manager of the lodge informed Bulletin who in turn notified all the security companies and farm
watch groups in the area. In the hour that followed, various security company patrols remained in contact with one another via linked WhatsApp groups, closing off various routes around town and closing in on the location of the vehicle. At 22:00 that same evening the call came in over the group that the vehicle had been found on the Mieliekloof dirt road just off the R71 outside Tzaneen. The van had been abandoned and the criminals had fled the scene. The cargo was stolen, but the vehicle safely returned. The victim expressed his thanks to all members involved in the return of the delivery van. He sustained no injuries. The case is being investigated and at the time of going to print there was no further information available. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Because these stats are for the period between April 2016 and March 2017, these figures will not yet include known cases such as the murder of Oki Turner. Phalaborwa and Tzaneen remain the only two precincts which showed instances of truck hijackings with one case reported in each town. Robberies at residential properties increased from 10 to 16 in Letsitele and remained unchanged at 19 cases in Tzaneen. Robbery at non-residential premises (businesses) rose from 28 to 39 cases in Letsitele while seven more instances were reported in Modjadjiskloof which climbed from 10 in 2016 to 17 cases this year. Join the fight: Malaria can be erradicated Every 60 seconds a child under five years of age dies of malaria across the globe. In 2015 there were 214 million cases of malaria infections reported worldwide with 70% of deaths from malaria in children under the age of five. Shockingly, 90% of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. But, it is a problem that can be solved, and through the help of humanitarian, Kingsley Holgate who inspired the birth of the “Goodbye Malaria” programme, malaria is now being combatted more effectively through the promotion of information. With the rainy season fast approaching, fears have risen about a malaria outbreak in the Limpopo province. Local hospitals have stated that although they have received malaria patients in the past month, their admittance has not been significantly higher than usual. Earlier this year a similar panic was caused when word spread about an outbreak in May. This was fuelled by the lack of malaria vaccines in the area as a result of a tremendous increase in infections in neighbouring countries such as Mozambique.
The Prospective Lowveld Rotary Club of Tzaneen invites you to join them for a Q&A session with Malaria Expert, Steve Knowles, from the Goodbye Malaria organization, on Thursday the 9th of November. The time and venue for the talk will be confirmed in next week’s edition. For any enquires and bookings, visit the Lowveld Rotary Prospective Club’s Facebook page. Goodbye Malaria is an initiative started by African entrepreneurs who believe that African creativity can solve one of Africa’s biggest problems. The initiative helps to raise funds that go directly to
support on-the-ground malaria elimination programs in Mozambique, spraying houses to protect families from contracting malaria. Goodbye Malaria also seeks to inspire peo-
ple to join their fight against malaria, by educating them to understand that elimination is ultimately possible. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Service delivery march moved The planned march to the office of Phalaborwa mayor, Pule Shayi, has been moved to the 4th of November. This is apparently after a meeting with the local SAPS. The residents have taken this opportunity to garner support for their movement to force change in their town by promoting the mass-action over social media and calling for all residents to join the march. The action comes amid silence on service delivery issues by the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality which has directly led to an almost complete collapse in infrastructure within that municipality. Bulletin is still awaiting a response from BPM spokesperson, Jonas Mahesu. We sent him an official enquiry more than a month ago. It is not just Phalaborwa town which is suffering at the hands of an incompetent administration, but the surrounding areas such as Namakgale and Lulekani where infrastructure and service delivery has seen as sharp a decline as well. “We welcome the planned march by our residents as this will highlight their concerns in the memorandum they will hand to the office of the mayor,” said Mahesu. “It is every citizens right to march, and once we have received their memorandum, we as the municipality will know exactly what areas we will need to focus on.”
A tender has been published on the BPM’s website for the appointment of a suitable supplier of cold asphalt. The successful candidate will be appointed to supply cold mix for the plugging of potholes over a period of three years. We have received no information as to who the appointee is, or if indeed a contractor has been appointed. There is also no indication of the value of the contract. In the meantime, that town has suffered through another week with frequent power outages and water interruptions as complaints land on the ward councillors’ deaf ears. Sewerage running through the streets and being spilled into the Kruger National Park has now been linked to the increase in Malaria cases reported in that town. With no proper medical facilities, residents have had to rush their family members to Tzaneen to receive proper malaria treatment. “With regards to the annual malaria spraying programme, it is not something that the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality handles. It is a directive from the Department of Health, we have nothing to do with that,” concluded Mahesu. — Joe Dreyer

The Message Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church Last week I attended a Clergy retreat, it was a silent retreat and although I found it extremely difficult to keep silent all the time, I managed as best as I could. However, talkative as I am I, occasional broke this silence as I was in the company of others that often asked questions and I felt obliged to answer. This got me thinking, what about others that are often alone? Those who sit at home day after day with no one to talk to. How do they cope? With modern technology such as the T.V. it might make it slightly easier. However, this is not the same as human contact. We are not meant to be alone, unless we chose to do so. We need stimulation, we need the company of others. So where do we go for this stimulation? Some might chose to join a club or some other activity. Some even go to church to find this stimulation. What about those who have family close by but very seldom see them? Are we too busy to visit? With today’s busy life we often find it difficult to “fit” a visit in and then again we need to make sure that those we intend to visit are in. They say: “it takes two to tango” often it is left for one to always take the first step. Sometimes it is expected of one person to continually initiate contact. Often we have to make an appointment to see them, we can’t just drop in. What about our faith? Do we or are we too busy to make contact with God? With all that is going on about us, do we make time to sit back and just pray? This is just one way of communicating with the most important person in our lives, God. Jesus said: “When you pray go into a quiet place” this means switching off from the outside world and all its distraction, not as easy as it seems. If you are determined you will find time and I know for a fact that God gives you the time. Jesus often went to a quiet place to speak to His Father, but He also prayed with His disciples. Do we only pray on our own or do we also pray with others? We have seen how people get together to pray and how much encouragement they receive. I believe in corporate pray as I have witnessed how it enlightens others. So do not remain in your cocoon get out there and contact others. Blessings.

The Choice is Yours For those parents who feel guilty sending your precious little ones to preschool or day care as you need to work, there is research that shows it is actually beneficial especially for children between the ages of 3 and 5. From the age of three, a child’s capacity to soak up information peaks, according to Ready to Learn DC. This is when your child has the highest potential for learning. While attending an early childhood education program, your child will improve her language and motor skills, while developing the learning and cognitive skills necessary to move on to primary school, states the Rural Education Action Program at Stanford University.
Studies show that being provided with quality care in the right environment, children’s learning, development and socio-emotional development is less likely to be adversely affected, with a decreased chance of needing behavioral or mental health care once entering primary school. For those who care for their own children at home in their early days, which are so short and needs to be cherished and enjoyed; it is fortunate that there are a number of quality outside activities and clubs where they can be stimulated and educated. Take the time to look into what is offered in your area. Let the guilt rest, our world offers so much stimulation and opportunities for education.

They perform experiments themselves and use authentic laboratory equipment that is safe for children. We believe that by introducing a child to the
fundamentals of science at a very young age, an interest, understanding and love for the subject will be nurtured that will prove to be indispensable in school years to follow. We investigate a variety of natural science subjects including chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology, geography, meteorology, paleontology, environmental sciences and biology. Invest in your child’s future - enroll them to become a Little Lab Coat in 2018. If you would like you school to participate - please contact us. School visits are a great way to open the doors of science to all.

Afro Jazz rhythms at Taste of Tzaneen Taste of Tzaneen at Fairview Hotel from 3-5 November is going to dish up a charming and delightful array of local flavours, not only in food and drink, but also in entertainment. Apart from cabaret, pop/rock, classical and gospel there is also a slot filled with Afro-pop and jazz – home-brewed. If you want to experience this full band sound, make sure you hang around near the swimming pool area on Friday, 3 November between 15:00 and 17:00 – the lazy Friday afternoon time between lunch and sundowners. Mpho and Mates consist of eight musos merged together to cook up a magical sound that will get your feet a-tapping. Mpho Bambo himself plays the lead and bass guitars. Dr Pat Malungane has fingers that tickle the piano and keyboard, Rumbi Shipalane, Gladwin Mathebula, Judith Nhemo and Frank Ntlemo add their voices to the mix, Tshwarelo Mafaralala does the drums and Emmy Seloise plays the piano. The group has known each other for six years and mostly play their best music for the Master at the Word Miracle Church. However, their repertoire reaches wider than gospel and they are therefore invited to play at corporate events, weddings, conferences, dinners and parties. Weather permitting, this band at the Taste of Tzaneen Fest will put you in a truly festive mood that will last for the entire weekend and longer. Don’t miss out. - Bobbi Gerber
Hul mees onlangse optrede was na Juanita du Plessis se optrede verlede naweek by Ben Vorster.
The Beatles, Santana, George Michael, Bob Marley, Queen, The Polie, Status Quo, Fleetwood Mac ensovoorts. As jy Framus nog nie beleef het nie, is Saterdagaand by Taste of Tzaneen Fest jou kans.
• Benewens Framus, is daar talle ander aantreklikhede by die Taste of Tzaneen te geniet. - Bobbi Gerber
of bespreek word deur Me Bobbi Gerber van iinfo by Fairview Lodge, te skakel by 082 331 5476.

Daniel clinches a double award Daniel Spies (13), a Grade 7 learner at Unicorn Preparatory School in Tzaneen, is the double winner for the Robert Mosse award for best English speaker as well as the Hein Kruger award for best Afrikaans speaker. School Headmaster Ian Houston said, “Daniel is a natural speaker and also has the gift of knowing how to read his audience.” There were prepared and unprepared speeches for both competitions. There was also a choice of five topics in the unprepared sections. In the Afrikaans section the prepared speech was whether homework was a good or bad thing. Daniel stated that it was bad and cited a Swedish school where no homework is given and this school has the best education in the
world. In the unprepared English section Daniel chose “three awkward questions I’d ask my parents.” Two of those questions he raised were “Did you want me and have you ever thought of getting divorced.” In the prepared 4-6 minute session Daniel expressed his reasons why children should have smart phones. He cited that they’re necessary for communication as well as a good source of entertainment and needed when in trouble. There were seven entrants for the English award as well as seven entrants for the Afrikaans award. Both the Robert Mosse and Hein Kruger public speaking awards were started in 1975. Daniel is the 11th
double winner since the inception of these awards. The other double winners were Sonja Vorster in 1977; Darryl Devenish in 1978; Kerrin Borchers in 1983; Christopher Lewis in 1986; Miles Warren in 1990; Tracey Reed in 1999; Nichola Gilbert in 2004; Gabriëlle Kruger in 2009; Xané du Toit in 2011 and Gregor Andrew in 2013. Paula Drake (now a teacher at Unicorn) won the Robert Mosse award in 1981 and her son, Eiren Drake, won it 26 years later in 2007. Another Unicorn teacher Heidi Coppen (neé Ratering) won the Hein Kruger award in 1984.

Gordon wins Mooketsi Seventy
Start of 70km, Far left is Alan Gordon who went on to win the race.
The seventh annual Mooketsi Mountain Bike Challenge took place this past Saturday and boasted a brand new venue at APC Camp in Mooketsi. The Mooketsi MTB Challenge is a qualifying event for Limpopo colours and is an officially sanctioned Limpopo Cycling event. The race caters for all levels of riders, from the serious cyclists, to the weekend warrior.
Overall winners of the 35km race. From left to right: Sheldon Muller (second), Richard Lambert (first) and Armand Cronjé (third).
With more than 300 riders participating in the three respective races which included the 10km, 35km and 70km events, spectators were sure to enjoy the action as much as the riders. The 35km and 70km races for the more serious riders, were both designed by track specialist, Francois Theron from Advendurance. This year it was Joshua Retief (15) and Tashane Ehlers
Winners of the Youth lady 15 to 16: Jennavieve Truter (second and third overall lady in 35 km race), Anna Elisa Gutierrez (first and first overall in 35 km women’s race) and Danica Altenroxel (third).
(12) who crossed the finish line first in the 10km for the men and women categories respectively. Retief crossed the line in 31:17,60 which was two minutes and some change quicker than his nearest rival, Zineddine Mengouchi who finished in a time of 33:03,10. Ehlers managed a very good time of 38:33,10 in a very tight race with second placed Anika du Toit who finished right on her heels in a time of 38:57,60. Richard Lambert took top honours in the 35km race in a time of 1:30:53,20 just .5 splits of a second ahead of Sheldon Muller who crossed the line in 1:30:53,70. His official time was recorded at 2:57:19,50. Melanie Melville took the win for the ladies overall with her time of 3:48:57.1.

Aces bow to Sheshego This past weekend saw some top notch Premier League cricket action in Polokwane when the Nashua Aces took on the mighty Sheshego. After winning the toss, Aces elected to bowl first which saw Sheshego’s Isaac Senetla and Amirsohil Bux, punish the Aces attack with a barrage of boundaries. Senetla brutalised the bowling line up with 17 fours and a sixer to rake in 120 runs of just 145 deliveries. Bux smacked 9 fours to score 48 off just 55 balls. They were eventually bowled out in the second-last delivery of the 49th over for 246. Aces took to the pitch and saw Chris de Klerk score 61 off 120
deliveries with a fantastic innings which included 6 boundaries. Stebian van der Walt brutalised the Sheshego attack with 7 fours and 3 sixes before he was bowled out for a half century off just 25 deliveries. Aces were bowled out on 195 to lose the match. On the bowling end of the match, it was Erik Viljoen who scalped five wickets for 39 runs in his 10 allotted overs, Leon Zietsman who took 2 for 31 in 9 overs and Jeandre Du Plessis who managed 2 for 37 in 10 overs. Viljoen was the Aces’ man of the match. Amirsohil Bux took five wickets for 28 runs in 8.1 overs while Katlego Sempe raked in 2 for 12 in six overs. Bux was announced as Sheshego’s Man of the Match. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

31 Records shattered

Piet Potgieter High’s senior freestyler, Raymond Kockott (17) and Pietersburg High’s Ivan Beukes (17) took to the water in the Boys 17-18 50m Freestyle event on Friday morning. Their race was part of the annual Limpopo Top 10 Schools gala held in Tzaneen last week. Participating schools included Eric Louw, Ben Vorster, PHS, Merensky, Frans du Toit, Ben Viljoen, Piet Potgieter, Warmbaths and Stanford Lake College. Kockott and and Beukes took first and second positions in the sprint with only a fraction of a second separating them. Kockott touched the wall first in 25,70 with Beukes right behind him on 25,71. The boys recorded the fastest times in the water during this year’s instalment of the gala, but failed to touch the event record of 24,83 set up by Ben Vorster swimmer Hennie Terblanche in 2009. To put this into perspective, the current World Junior Swimming record holder for the 50m Freestyle, is the 17-year old American Michael Andrew, who recorded a time of 21,75 at the World Junior Championships in August this year. The swimming on display at this year’s local gala, however, was of a very high standard with a staggering total of 31 new records set during the event. Every race saw competition of the highest calibre with long-time rivals and newcomers pushing one another
Ivan Beukes in the 100m Backstroke Deané Toerien
hard for the win. Local junior swimmer, Ruan Hanaczeck-Kruger from Ben Vorster took podium in almost all of his events recording some dazzling times to score enough points for the Junior Victor Ludorum. His female counterpart from the same school, Elmé Genis, mirrored his performance to wear the Junior Victrix Crown. Genis also setup the
new 100 Breast record for 16 year old Girls with her sterling time of 1:28,18 (4 seconds behind 17-year old local swimming sensation, Deané Toerien, who set the new Girls 17 100m Breast record on 1:24,52). Ivan “The Machine” Beukes, from PHS recorded a sub-minute 100m Fly to take first place in that event and set the new record at 59,69 for the Boys 17-18. He also scalped the new 100m Backstroke record when he touched the side in 1:04,15. His achievements awarded him Senior Victor Ludorum. Senior Victrix went to local las, Anina Koekemoer,
who setup a new record in the Girls 17-18 10mm Fly with her time of 1:21,76. Again, for the fifth year running, local school Ben Vorster took the honours as Limpopo schools champions with a total score of 864 points. Ben Viljoen High were runners up on 801 points with Piet Potgieter High in third spot on 760 points. The best boys and girls teams’ awards also went to Ben Vorster with their swimmers raking in a total of 22 gold, 19 silver and 13 bronze medals on the day. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
