The BPM’s very own public nuisances by-laws state explicitly that all use or display of fireworks are considered as public nuisances which affect the peace and safety of the community and are considered outlawed. As has been the case with so many municipalities within the Mopani District’s jurisdiction bylaws have been blatantly ignored through either a lack of policing, or sheer apathy. Will the BPM be forced to into adherence to their own laws by the very residents the laws were setup to protect in the first place, or will the cries of the Ba-Phalaborwa

Diere bedank die gemeenskap
Letaba DBV se Bestuurs Komitee, Lede en Personeel sê hartlik dankie aan die gemeenskap vir hul hulp en bystand gedurende 2017. “Ons is ‘n bevoorreg om sulke wondelike diereliefhebbers te hê wat altyd ons in gedagte hou wanneer dinge moeilik gaan by Letaba DBV,” het Inspekteur Ellie Potgieter an die Tzaneen DBV, gesê. “Dankie ook aan ons jeug, die skole wat hulle deel met donasies en befondsing gedoen het. Ons is dankbaar daarvoor en sien uit om weer saam met julle projekte aan te pak.” Die jaar was, en is nog ‘n groot uitdaging om die wiel aan die rol te hou, maar Potgieter hoop en glo dat dinge vir die komende 2018 baie beter gaan wees. Elke individu, skool en jeugdigde in die Letaba DBV se distrik wat betrokke is en was gedurende 2017 het ‘n enorme impak gemaak op die DBV se voortbestaan. “Ons Saluut julle almal en wens julle ‘n Geseënde Kersfees, en ‘n Voorspoedige Nuwe Jaar toe. Graag wil ons ook namens die diere, wat deur die jaar aangeneem en by goeie huise ingeneem is, asook die wat met die gemeeskap se openhartigheid versorg en gevoed is en word, ‘n enorme dankie sê.” ‘n Spesiale dank gaan uit aan die vrywil-
ligers wat hulle private tyd afstaan om hand te gaan bysit vir die diere. Die DBV ag hierdie vrywilligers as ‘helde in tye van nood’. Potgieter het verder bygelas dat Letaba DBV sal voortgaan om die gemeenskap se mense en diere by te staan in die geval van nood. “Ons gaan voort om ons roeping as Organisasie te volstaan deur Diere Mishandeling te beveg. A Narrow escape down the slope for JD A weekend excursion ended abruptly for two friends when one of them narrowly escaped death in the hillsides of Agatha this weekend. JD van Heerden (25) and his longtime friend, Benhanru Gunter (25) had made the trip up to Tzaneen from Centurion, to visit his cousin, Billy McKechnie at Kings Walden Estate. “The whole idea behind our trip was so that Benhanru and I could get some off-road time in on the bikes,” explained van Heerden from his hospital bed at Mediclinic Tzaneen. “We don’t get time to scramble much in the city, and Agatha’s windy dirt roads are the sort of excursion every bike enthusiast dreams about. But, little did we know…” On Saturday morning the pair set out into the countryside and made their way through the Agatha forest exploring every inch of dirt road they could on their dirt bikes. They came onto a firebreak along the Arnon section of Agatha. It was a beautiful clear straight and so they gunned down the slope. “I was driving in front with Benhanru close behind. The path was a long straight with a few hills and humps, so we could see ahead of us for ages. We came over a slope and sped down back into what looked like a long straight. Suddenly I saw a massive drop in front of me and slammed on breaks, but by then it was already too late.” Van Heerden and his bike vanished straight down a 30m drop. His bike was thrown to the side as he attempted to leap to safety. He came to rest on the hill side a few metres
from a massive boulder protruding out of the long grass. Gunter stopped a few inches from the edge and jumped off his bike to check if his friend was okay. Noticing that van Heerden was in immense pain, he climbed back up the hill to phone for help. Gunter walked until he found a spot where his cellphone had reception and sent a pin drop location to Billy, who in turn picked up his neighbour, Andrew Williams before rushing to the scene. “Initially the pin drop took us to the Lancefield Farm, but we realized this was incorrect when we got there and found no trace of the bikes or any tracks. I called Gunter to ask for any landmark and he then told me he saw a sign for the Arnon Road. We drove until we found the bike tracks and tracked them to the location where Gunter was waiting,” Billy explained. “Had it not been for Andrew, we would never had found the boys. He was also instrumental in their rescue as he went back to the road to wait for the emergency rescue guys and guided them back to us. On Monday he also helped to retrieve JD’s bike.” Members of the Mountain Rescue team were deployed who in turn activated the ER24 ambulance service. Once they arrived, the ER24 paramedics stabilized van Heerden and loaded him into an air force helicopter who air-
lifted him to Mediclinic Tzaneen. At the hospital he was sent for an MRI scan under instruction of Dr Spies. It was discovered that van Heerden had broken his pelvis in three places. Initially it was reported that he also cracked two vertebrae, but this could not be confirmed at the time of going to print. Van Heerden was in good spirits when Bulletin spoke to him in Mediclinic Tzaneen on Sunday and it is expect-
ed that he will be discharged sometime this week. “I think this is a sign that I should perhaps take up wake boarding or rock climbing instead. Maybe the scrambling should be set aside for a bit.” — Joe Dreyer

Rene – Phalaborwa’s forgotten Caregiver Rene Stander (born Irene Edith Beresford) was born on 24th March 1936 in England. Her twin sister, Margaret Rose Beresford, arrived within just a few minutes. One year later another sister, Joyce, was born. The three little girls enjoyed a very close relationship and this would prove to be a great source of strength to them in the years ahead as they faced many trials together. During World War 2 their parents’ marriage broke down and due to many contributing factors the children were removed from their mother’s care and placed into a foster home. As one would expect, this was extremely traumatic for such young children. The foster parents were unloving to the point of cruelty, and the suspicion is that the only reason they fostered the children was for the benefit of the additional food stamps they would receive. The girls were barely fed and on many occasions were sent to bed without dinner as punishment for minor transgressions typical of any young child. There was no compassion or demonstration of affection from the foster parents. But God had His hand on these precious girls… One night during the Blitz the air-raid siren sounded. The foster parents and their own children made their way to the bomb shelter, abandoning these three young girls. They spent the entire night alone in an upstairs room, clinging to one another for comfort in their shared bed as the German bombs fell. In their retelling of this story the fear they had felt during that very long night was still palpable. The story doesn’t end here though... When the bombing ended and morning came they looked down from their window towards the street to see that theirs was the only house still standing. Every oth-
er house had been destroyed, but God had kept His hand on them. Due to the cruelty of the foster parents the girls were malnourished and desperately thin. The headmaster of their school was a godly man and he became very anxious for their wellbeing. Unbeknownst to them he contacted the authorities and communicated his concerns. He arrived at the foster-home unexpectedly one morning and removed them from the ‘care’ of these unkind people. Without any forewarning they were taken to a children’s home, then called ‘White’s Home and Mission’. It has since been renamed, Mill Grove. The girls were very happy in this safe and secure environment and remained there until, in the case of the twins, they were married in 1955. After finishing school, Rene stayed on as a caregiver at the children’s home and it was there that she met Wendel, who visited the children’s home whilst hitchhiking through Europe with his younger brother. When he laid eyes on Rene it was love at first sight. When he returned to South Africa they corresponded regularly, and this was also how he proposed. An engagement ring was sent to Rene via a mutual friend who was traveling to England, and Wendel sailed back to marry his bride. On the 16th April 1955 there was a double wedding as both twins were married that day! The younger sister, Joyce, was bridesmaid to her sisters. While Margaret and her husband, Karl, left soon after to live in Canada, Rene and Wendel sailed to South Africa. Rene and Wendel were blessed with four children. Marguerite, Collette, Lucille and Andrew. Wendel entered training for the ministry in

1968 and although Rene had never imagined herself in the role of pastor’s wife, she coped admirably. During their years in the pastorate, moving to different churches over the years, Rene was very busy. She led the youth, trained both the church and youth choirs, led the ladies work and
was elected President of the Baptist Women’s Association of South Africa. She was a gifted speaker and had a wonderful sense of humour. She laughed easily, especially at herself! She had great wisdom and compassion, evidenced by her desire to establish a Frail Care Centre in Phalaborwa. Her involvement in all these activities never took away from her relationship with her family! She was a remarkable wife and mother, and a great friend to all! Her early life experiences, instead of breaking her, brought about great strength. She had strong views and was unafraid in her expression of her opinion. She stood up to adversity and was not easily trampled. The combination of gentleness and strength was a beautiful thing and she was greatly loved and admired by family and friends. Life was not always easy for Wendel and Rene. Twice they suffered the loss of a child, and the loss of a young grandson, Clive. Their only son and youngest child, Andrew, died tragically at the age of 23 in 1981, and their second eldest daughter, Collette, passed away suddenly in 2001. Despite their deep grief they never lost their faith in God. They trusted Him implicitly because they had experienced His faithfulness. When Wendel retired in 1990 they returned to Phalaborwa which was a town they loved

dearly. It was during this time that Rene had a dream. She opened a care shop which was run by volunteer pensioners. This writer well remembers taking a bakkie-load of goods to the shop on the first day that Rene moved in. She was seated on the floor, surrounded by goods with not a counter or table in sight. Against a wall was an upended box with a kettle and desk fan. There was no air-conditioning and it was the middle of February. The doors had to be kept closed as it was not yet open for business and the heat was unbelievable. Rene tirelessly collected goods from anybody who contacted her – the Care Shop was a great success and very popular. The Frail Care centre opened its doors for the first time in October 2005. In 2008 Rene became ill and was diagnosed with cancer. Later that year, she died in a Hospice in Pretoria. Wendel joined her in heaven in April of this year. Together they are greatly missed by their remaining children, Marguerite and Lucille. Rene Stander was an inspiring woman. She was a remarkable mother and a grandmother dearly loved by her grandchildren (As a side note - the editor of the Bulletin, Joe Dreyer, is one of her grandsons). The Message
Granny’s Grumbles – Larks and Owls As you get older you find you have more time to consider things and wonder why certain things are the way they are. I worked out some time back that humans fall into two categories – some are larks and some are owls. Owls stay up late and do their best to stay in bed late. Many people think that merely because they have never been late for work, it indicates that they must be larks. Not at all!! A true lark is one who generally goes to bed early, wakes up without the aid of an alarm clock and generally greets the day with a smile. An owl who has never been late for work is merely a good worker who appreciates his job. I have long wondered whether it is a specific gene that makes you one or the other or possibly it could have everything to do with your upbringing. There were four of us – my mother told us daily that sloth was one of the seven deadly sins and she made sure that sloth was one sin we would not be burdened with. It appears that in our case, it had everything to do with genes AND upbringing. We are now all pensioners but I can text any one of my siblings at 5 o’clock in the morning and will get an immediate response. As they get older, larks don’t need as much sleep as they did in their youth, so they are prone to waking up at any time after three or four in the morning. In this case, it’s different strokes for different folks. For instance I have a friend who gets up, makes herself tea, watches TV, reads a book and does all man-
ner of things. I actually only get out of bed at five, but have usually been awake for at least an hour. I have no wish to get up (especially in winter) so I lay in bed considering how I will change the world and other important things. Many years ago (when our family could afford to make the annual trek to Durban for a holiday) we had rented a flat on the beach front and I was leaving at daybreak for my daily early morning walk on the beach. My husband is not a lark and I know better than to wake him. I was the only person on the beach that morning – it was low tide and as I looked ahead there was a very peculiar shape at the edge of the water. As I approached the shape I realised that it was a man standing on his head. No – this is not an Alice in Wonderland story – this is fact. I don’t know if anybody else has had a conversation with somebody who is actually upside down. It’s difficult – I somehow felt that I should have been on my knees nearer to his mouth. After early morning pleasantries and asking if I was a holidaymaker, we ended our conversation and I went on my way. It appeared that the head-standing man and I were the only two early risers. A short while later I came upon a very large log that had been washed up on the beach – this was after the incredible floods that the Natal coast had experi-
enced during the late nineties. I plonked myself on the log and gazed out at the sun which was just beginning to rise. Suddenly I was joined by a lady who almost immediately “spilt her guts” to me. Have you ever noticed how people will open up to you about their innermost secrets if they know they will probably never see you again?
Presumably the fact that my husband was still sleeping whilst I was exploring the coast line obviously meant that I was in an unhappy relationship (at least as far as she was concerned). The next ten minutes were spent telling me how uncaring her husband was. I commiserated and said that men were different. Wrong answer!! Had I ever considered killing him?
Well…of course most married women regularly think about killing their husbands, but we don’t actually do it. For a long time we discussed the best way to commit the perfect murder and since I am a great fan of Crime and Investigation books and films I was able to give her the lowdown on all sorts of poisons. I told her that succinylcholine seemed to be the poison of choice – very difficult to pick up by the forensic specialists. As the sun rose higher I said I should be getting back to the flat, but before I left I asked if she’d ever seen the man on the beach with his head in the sand – evidently he was a regular but always very early in the morning and only at low tide. I could hardly wait to get back to our holiday home to let my other half know about my entertaining morning. Now this is where a very big difference between men and women arises. Any women would have been enthralled by my interesting walk. First of all my husband did not believe that I had seen a man standing on his head and secondly he was appalled that I had been discussing how to murder a one’s husband with a strange woman. “How will you feel if she murders her husband?” “Well – I would never really know – I don’t even know her name – how on earth would I know if she murdered her husband!! Get up early ladies – that’s when it all happens!

In some of the main line English Churches viz. Catholic, Anglican and Greek Orthodox it is the practice to have different colours displayed, either on the altar or on the robes the priest wears as well. Many have asked why this is the case and I would like to take this opportunity to briefly explain the reasons. In short, the colours express the emotions and ideas that are associated with each season of the liturgical year. We are in the season of Advent and the colour for this season is Purple. The ancient royal colour was purple and the symbol of the Sovereignty of Christ. It is also the colour for lent as it is associated with repentance of sin. White or Gold symbolizes the brightness of day, it is the colour of Christmas day and the twelve days after Christmas. It is also the colour at Easter. It is often used at funerals to symbolise hope. Red is the colour of Pentecost. It evokes the colour of blood, the colour of martyrs and of Christ’s death on the cross. Red also symbolizes fire- the Holy Spirit. Green is the colour of growth and is used in the season of Epiphany- the spread of the Good News. This is the longest season in the liturgical year. Although these colours are specific to the seasons, different colours are used to celebrate different events during the year as well. As I have indicated this is the season of Advent when we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Christ, a special season which should be one of love and peace and it is my wish that with God’s guidance we will all be more Christ-like in our dealings with others. Share the joy that Christ brings to all believers with others and bless them. Pray for them to receive the same joy we experience. Smile at people and show that you have the love of Christ within you. I wish you all a blessed Christmas and may the Christ-child live in all of you.

2018 Macadamia Crop Forecast for SA The Southern African Macadamia Growers’ Association (SAMAC) recently conducted a crop forecast survey for the 2018 season. A figure of 56 000 tons of NIS (nut-in shell at 1.5% kernel moisture content) is estimated to be produced in 2018. This is still lower than the projected long term forecast of 57 600 tonnes in an industry that is expanding more rapidly than when the long term projections were made, although it should be noted that a more accurate forecast can only be made at the end of January. Although the final volume of the global 2017 macadamia crop will only be known in 2018, it is no secret that it was again a world record accompanied by record prices. “Despite the 2017 global crop being the largest ever recorded it is clear that the global demand has
increased substantially. Consistency of supply has been a worrying aspect of the macadamia industry, so a signifi-
cant increase in volume from the largest macadamia exporting nation, is what the market needs to satisfy this growing global demand and to continue to encourage new products with macadamias”, said Mr. Jens Borchert from Palm Nuts and More, a German-based macadamia importer and distributor. The final 2017 crop volumes will also be made available in January, which it is anticipated to be slightly more than 42 000 tonnes NIS. Fifty two percent (52%) of the 2018 crop is expected to be produced in Mpumalanga, followed by Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and other regions (Table 1). A reduction in import tariffs for macadamias was announced in late November by the Chinese Government. The tariff was reduced from 19% to 12%. SAMAC has been working hard
with various role players, especially in China to facilitate a lower import duty and many months of discussions have finally paid off. This will assist the industry to remain competitive in one of its most important export markets. Fifty five percent (55%) of the crop is expected to be processed to kernel in 2018, which is more than the previous season. Mr Walter Giuricich, chairman of SAMAC says “The industry is well on the road to recovery after the recent drought and the 2018 season macadamia crop is looking promising. Many handlers are expanding their markets, which is a positive sign of a growing industry. The demand for macadamias remains high and we are confident that the expected higher volumes will encourage the market to further grow and develop.” An updated forecast will be issued in January 2018. Bakgaga receives new office block The flames of development at Bakgaga Traditional Authority (BTA) will flicker further after the government resolved to construct an administration block and conference centre for the community. The new centre, to be funded by the Department of Human Settlements in Limpopo, will be used to hold traditional courts, administer the traditional authority as well as a conference centre for bigger events. Spokesperson for the BTA, Maboku Maake, confirmed that the reports are true. Maake
told Buletin that the construction of the complex will be completed by community members in the jurisdiction of the authority. He added that so far registration for those interested in being part of the construction of the building had been completed. The construction is expected to commence as soon as possible. He however could not be drawn into more details about the project. It is not the first time the community of Bakgaga has been involved in community development initiatives. In 2005 the commu-
nity led by Her Majesty Bessie Maake, were involved in a community development initiative which facilitated the construction of the Maake Plaza shopping complex in conjunction with McCormick Property developers. Attempts to obtain comment from the MEC for human settlement, Jerry Ndou, were not fruitful as he was attending the ANC national elective conference in Gauteng. The Bakgaga community situated about 60 kilometres South East of Tzaneen boasts a tarred road, Dr CN Pahatudi hospital, Shiluvana
hospital, Bula Mahlo service cost centre to name a few. Bakgaga is the only area in the Tzaneen region to be led by a woman chief who is not in good health and was replaced by a regent. The current mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), Maripe Mangena hails from this area. The Friendship Circle’s Christmas teddies For the past eight years some of the residents of Macadamia Village have been gathering on a weekly basis, on Thursday mornings in the Village’s Community Centre. This time together is known as The Friendship Circle, which is organized by Liz Devenish, Anne Lavis and Pam Bender. During this time, the ladies and gents enjoy each other’s company, play games such as chess and Rummikub and croquet and knit. The residents are often arranging and participating in community projects, some are local initiatives and sometimes a need from ‘a far’ if nominated. The most recent project involved knitting teddy’s for the Carel du Toit Centre for Deaf Children as Christmas presents, which was arranged and facilitated by, Shirley Venter.
Julia Jensen of the Speech Therapy/Audiology Department of Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in the Free State said that over the years, they have been struggling with late identifications of hearing loss in children. “This obviously affects speech, language and education options. We are launching a new hearing screening programme at the National District Hospital and the staff at the Carel du Toit School will be the custodians and project managers.” The teddy project is an ongoing project, so not just a once-off campaign. SuperSPAR aids local players A special fundraiser bowls day was arranged by Allen Brett of Tzaneen SuperSPAR in aid of sponsorship for the Impala and Limpopo provincial players this past weekend. The proceeds of the special tournament was to cover the players’ transport and
accommodation costs for the upcoming national tournament. Teams from all over the province travelled to Tzaneen Bowls Club. President of Limpopo Bowls, Wally Duncan, was also in attendance and thanked everyone for their commitment to the furthering of the sport by supporting these players. The results were astonishing. “The Tzaneen Bowls Club excelled and the presentation was great, everyone present enjoyed it and we were spoiled when the staff of Tzaneen SuperSPAR entertained the guests with Christmas Carols,” said Tzaneen President Wessel Pretorius. “We at Tzaneen Bowls Club are very proud of our players and as every year we have the bulk of players filling the various

We again are blessed to see a new dawn of life through the year 2018 that is coming in less than two weeks from now. As Greater Letaba Municipality, we consider ourselves to be the lucky few to see yet another year come and go and be part of the festive celebrations. ‘Twas a good year
Concluding our lookback at the major sporting highlights of the 2017 calendar, we remember the achievements swimmers from all the schools in our town, the clubs and coaches they swam for and remember the many swimmers who shattered records in their quest to be the best. We also look back at the famous ATKV Eiland Cycle challenge and hope that 2018’s event will do good to the organizers’ predictions of double the turn out. On the netball courts, Ben Vorster outshone their competition to be crowned Limpopo champs while the mighty Nashua Aces from Polokwane managed to climb their way to the top of the Cricket league, suffering defeat only at the hands of the Tzaneen Hornbills.
