Last call for Nguni?
Shocked residents were met with a sign on the gate of the newly established Nguni Grill restaurant over the weekend informing them that the shop had been closed. Photos: Jacques Smuts
Nguni Grill seems to be sliding down the same slope as its predecessor, Misty River Spur, which closed its doors in November last year following a much publicised nationwide boycott. Misty River operated in Tzaneen for close on a decade. In December we broke the news of an exciting new venture, which was set to replace the beloved family restaurant. Though it would be rebranded under the Nguni Grill label, the new restaurant would still have the same owners, most of the same staff and be situated in the same build-
ing which is owned by Michael Chan. All seemed well for the first few weeks until this weekend when we received information that the restaurant had been closed. The entrance gates were locked and a sign advised patrons that unforeseen circumstances had led to the temporary closure of the restaurant which would again be open for trade this week. But, on Monday afternoon the restaurant was still closed and according to one of the employees, the owner of the establishment, Nick Englezakis, was overseas.
An alleged payment dispute between Englezakis and his staff is believed to have resulted in the waiters, grillers and managers embarking on a stay-away action. Some of them allege that they have not been paid since December. Two of the managers who walked over to Nguni Grill after the closure of the Spur, have since resigned and relocated out of Tzaneen. One of the waiters told us on Thursday that the Department of Labour paid the restaurant a visit this week and were looking at solving the payment dispute or taking the
matter forward. Englezakis was the owner of the Captain Dorego’s restaurant in the CBD which also closed its doors three months ago. At the time of going to print it was believed that a meeting between the remaining staff and Englezakis was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, but he apparently never showed. We have also not been able to contact Englezakis for comment on the matter and will endeavour to do so for our follow up article. We have been told that he changed his phone number amid the current crisis.

Mopani Disaster Centre, in the outskirts of Tzaneen enroute to Agatha. The meeting attended by hundreds of councillors dressed in red overalls, raised concerns from the community as to whether the party used government resources for party related issues. Others thought it was a Valentine’s Day party. The councillor added that the meeting was aimed at preparing members to stage a rally outside the gates of parliament which was postponed last week. Spokesperson for the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) Neil Shikwambana said he was not aware that there was a meeting at the fire station attended by Malema. He said as the opposition party in Mopani, EFF is allowed to use facilities to prepare their meetings. Last week on Saturday, big SUV`s were seen doing the rounds, when president of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa, was in Tzaneen where he met with the local traditional chiefs in the area. A source said he was consulting the chiefs about the decision of the ANC to
Cosatu cautions against land claims The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) chairperson, Dan Sebabi, cautioned communities whose lands were restored by the Limpopo Land Claims Commission to work hand in hand with former owners so the farms do not become ‘white elephants’. He said that bar a few farms at Mooketsi and the Letsitele valley, many of the farms that were redistributed disappeared into obscurity after they were transferred to new owners. “There is one farm in Limpopo, where returning land back to its original owners was not a disappointment because the community was not left out when the farms were developed. In the other farms where land had been returned to the community, infighting became the order of the day. Trees were chopped down for firewood, fences removed and some equipment stolen,” he said. The workers union, was responding to complaints that the money some of the beneficiaries in the Vankuna traditional authority received, was very little. This traditional authority opted for the financial compen-
Selflessness does not mean one should sacrifice all even if you are the one in need of assistance.” said Sebabi. “We have buried many people within the organisation who died because they were stressed and frustrated by Zebra-style politics where people were deployed according to the colour of the clothes they put on.” He cautioned against people demanding land without compensation and radical economic transformation without thinking of what the aftermath may be. “At Makgoebaskloof, land was returned to the community, but what became of that land afterwards proves that taking land without compensation is not such a good idea. The problem is the public’s belief that things are free in a capitalist state. Nothing is free in a capitalist state. The solution to the problems affecting our communities could only be a thing of the past if the youths could arm themselves with education. Youth should first go to school before they indulge in politics.” — Jan Mafetsa
sation rather than the land. The community felt that their payment received was comparable to peanuts. Last week people gathered at Nkowankowa to be provided with vouchers for their claims. The land claimed included farms near the Letaba hospital. Sebabi said the best way to handle the land claims issues is not to allow the farms to disappear into obscurity, which happens when the beneficiaries who are not trained or skilled in agriculture, begin to fight over the land which in some instances results in looting of valuables by the beneficiaries. He urged the communities not to fight among themselves, but rather form Black Economic Empowerment consortiums to take progress forward. “When workers talk about ‘organic intellectuals’ they are referring to members of their community always willing to serve unconditionally. Those are the people who, when there is a crisis, they first think, investigate the matter and thereafter package the investigations before presenting to the audience.
Village water volunteers want pay More than 300 volunteers from the rural villages in Mopani have threatened to bring services at the district municipality to a halt if they are not hired by the municipality as they were initially promised. They gathered at the fire station last week Thursday, demanding answers after they did not receive their monthly stipend for December. Secretary for the volunteers, Sabina Mocheki, said they are concerned after the municipality defaulted on an initial promise that they were going to be hired either by the MDM or the Empowered Public Works Programme (EPWP). She added that they were paid stipends similar to those paid to workers of the EPWP in December, and those payments have since stopped. Mocheki said all the volunteers are from the five municipalities in the district which are Greater Letaba, Tzaneen, Maruleng,
Phalaborwa and Greater Giyani municipalities. She said they formed a committee in 2015 after they realised that a promise by the MDM to hire them was not fulfilled. It is alleged that after some engagements with authorities, these volunteers were paid the sum of R2 100. “When we could not get the money we decided to engage the municipality on the subject but we were not given an attentive ear. So we then saw it fit to hit the streets in the hopes that our message will be heard. We spent some hours away from our homes helping communities with water but the people we are assisting decided to turn a blind ear. Our safety sometimes is compromised. We will not rest until all the demands are met.” she added. MDM spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana said he is aware of the problems experi-

recall its former president Jacob Zuma. After the meeting at a hotel in Tzaneen, the entourage left for the Bolobedu traditional council to meet with the Queen. The source further stated that Ramaphosa was accompanied by deputy secretary, Jessie Duarte, Premier Stanley Mathabatha, and all the local mayors. Thereafter, he reportedly left to Vhembe to meet the Venda paramount Chief Ramabula, and later flew to Pretoria to attend the top six meeting of the ANC. The known traditional authorities in Tzaneen are Bakgaga, Baloyi, Modjadji, Mamaila, Nkuna, Letsoalo, Mahlo and the Bathlabine royal palaces. It is reported while others were visited at their home, others were called to hotels to be briefed on the latest developments in the ruling party. The visits by the two political leaders, Malema and Ramaphosa, were preceded by that of ANC deputy president, David Mabuza, who was staying at Highgrove Lodge. - Jan Mafetsa

enced by the protestors and they are ready to listen to them. “We do not want to meet them through the media and instead we prefer to meet them face to face. We realised that commenting in the past in the media created more tensions between the municipality and the operators and we would like to avoid the stalemate repeating itself,” said Shikwambana. He urged leaders of the concerned people to consult the municipality through their representatives. He said the municipality is always ready to meet the communities they are serving provided appropriate procedures were followed. The municipality is the water services authority in Mopani and it is responsible for delivering water to rural villages. Man claims bridge as home The unnamed bridge dweller beneath the R71 road which heads towards Phalaborwa, is causing all kinds of havoc in the area. Pedestrians have told Bulletin that the man sleeps under the bridge and has annexed the entire pavement for himself, declaring it to be his home. Those who dare tread too close are verbally assaulted and threatened with death by stoning should they not immediately leave. “That guy is crazy, he makes huge fires there every morning and throws rocks at us when we pass by on our way to work. He should be removed as he is obviously a danger to society and belongs in a mental institute.” It is not clear where the man originates from and nobody has been able to come close enough to ask him. He has been living under the bridge for at least eight months and does not seem to have plans to move soon. The number of street sleepers in Tzaneen is increasing. They have become more prominent in the CBD because of the lack of proper policing in the area coupled with the increasing number of vacant buildings in that district. The GTM also does not seem to be particularly interested in looking at the problem or perhaps they have not been made aware of it. In a bid to do our part as responsible citizens, we have made a list of known hotspots and have sent this list along with an official enquiry to the spokesperson of the GTM. We should have feedback on the matter in our next edition. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com Photo: Jacques Smuts

‘He is allowed to build here’ What appears to be an informal outdoor venue of sorts is nearing completion on the banks of the Letaba River behind Wisani Burial Society in Claude Wheatley Street. Concrete tables and chairs have been erected and it would appear as though foundations have been cast for the construction of a building. Pillars for a boundary wall have also been set in place and an entrance wide enough for a vehicle to pass through has been cleared. In December last year we reported on the developments at this site and asked the GTM’s communications officer whether the man responsible for this construction obtained the necessary permission from council for the development. We received no answer. As far as we can ascertain, no environmental impact studies were conducted. The site
is situated right opposite the Tzaneng Mall Taxi rank with its entrance opening onto one of the busiest roads in the CBD. Claude Wheatley is already a contentious route with the taxi drivers and illegal street hawkers occupying most of the carriageway and the adjacent pavements. Vehicles entering and exiting this premises will not be able to see oncoming traffic and accidents would become common place. Besides the impending dangers to motorists, this site rests on the bank of the Letaba river which could be detrimental given that people will be eating and drinking here. Security is also a concern. This week we sent questions to Neville Ndlala to get some clarity on the matter. According to him the man building there,

has every right to do so. “I’m not entirely sure of the details within the permit this man obtained to build here, but I do know that he has some resolution which he obtained from council a few years ago which allows him to do so. It looks as though he is not going to construct actual buildings here, rather wooden structures. The fence will also be getting wooden poles between the concrete pillars. I will put in my enquiries to the relevant departments at the GTM and get back to you with more detailed information.” — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com
Phalaborwa braces for final Marula
The annual Marula Festival will again take place at the Impala Park rugby stadium next week Friday. This festival is organized by the Department of Arts, Culture and Recreation in conjunction with the Department of Economic Development and features top national hip-hop artists headlining local performers which attract thousands of fans to the small mining community. The event has sparked outrage from homeowners, churches and the schools bordering the stadium which is situated right in the centre of the residential area. Though the unbearable noise is a main concern for the residents, the more pertinent matter is the sight of used condoms, empty beer bottles and drunks passed out on the pavements outside the stadium the following morning. Discussions around the event erupted into a race war over social media with residents from the outlying areas accusing Phalabor-
wa property owners of being racist. “So the whites were happy that the darkies would be partying it up in the bush and not in their pretty little town. Well, it’s never going to happen...too bad for you!!” said one commentator over Facebook. “Unfortunately you wil have to bear with noise because it’s going to happen whether you like it or not.” Last year the police and security groups had their hands full breaking up fist fights in the streets, chasing away groups of people drinking outside the stadium with music blaring from the vehicles and picking up those who were too intoxicated to make it home, and simply lay down on the lawns in front of the homes adjacent to Impala Park. This caused residents to voice their concerns over the festival and insist the municipality and the organizers move the event to a more suited venue. After much pressure from the community, the Department of
Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Limpopo (LEDET) issued a statement wherein they announced plans to relocate the event to Ingwe Park outside of town on the R71. The move will however only take place next year. Though LEDET has concluded their plans for the development of the venue to accommodate the large numbers of visitors, construction will only commence later this year. “The festival is not all that bad for the local community,” said Manie Kriel of the Phalaborwa Home and Property Owners Organization. “We must remember that there is not one bed and breakfast venue or lodge in this town that is not fully booked during the weekend of the festival. The visitors here spend their money in our shops which is a very good financial injection for us. Yes, the festival will bring with it some bad ele-
ments, but that is the case with any event of this magnitude. We have spoken to the local police about all the issues and they have assured us that they will tightly monitor the event this year.” Not all share that sentiment though. Gert Coetzee, the chairperson of the Phalaborwa CPF said that each year, the festival has him and his team on high alert. “We have our hands full every year with drunk and disorderly behaviour outside the stadium. We don’t have a problem with the festival itself, or what happens inside the venue, but it becomes our concern when the negative elements spill over into the residential areas.” In the meantime the countdown to the 13th instalment of the annual celebration has started and like it or not, Phalaborwa will have to grin and bear it one last time. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

The police have identified one of the suspects believed to be involved in the recent fuelling station bombings in the area. Tzaneen experienced two such cases in the space of just a week when an armed gang robbed both the Total and the Sasol fuelling stations on either side of the R71 road. In both instances the gang members were armed with R5 assault rifles and used plastic explosives to blow up the under-counter drop safes inside the convenience stores at these fuelling stations. Both robberies took place between 03:00 and 04:00 in the morning and the same vehicles were identified as getaway cars. Nobody was killed and no shots were fired during both the robberies. In light of these attacks the SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen; Nneke Ledwaba recently established a dedicated task team to focus on the apprehension of the gang. Already the team
has had a major breakthrough with the identification of a member of this syndicate earlier this week. Boitumelo Daniel Aphane, better known by his street name, Aka Small, is believed to be in hiding either in the Pretoria CBD, Mamelodi or Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga. Aka Small was arrested previously after a cash in transit heist in Mokopane and appeared in the Moko-
pane Magistrate’s court. It is reported that he escaped a short while after that and a warrant for his arrest was issued. He is also connected to cash in transit heists in the Mankweng, Sheshego and Polokwane policing areas and is now wanted in connection with the fuelling station robberies committed in Tzaneen, Polokwane and Nobody in Mankweng. During the robberies in Tzaneen it is believed that the gang used a white BMW and light grey Toyota Carolla to make their escape. Each time, witnesses stated that the men fled on the R71 towards Polokwane. The Police investigations into all these incidents, are still continuing. Anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of this suspect, may contact Captain Richard Boshomane at 079 894 5501 or the crime stop number 0860010111 or crime line sms 32211 or the nearest Police Station.

Granny’s Grumbles – Cell-phones
One good thing about old age is having reached a stage in your life where you no longer worry too much about what other people think of you. Since the advent of the cell-phone, etiquette has gone down the plug-hole. I was interested to hear on TV some time ago that a new word “phubbing” has just gate-crushed its way into the MacMillan’s Concise Dictionary. “Phubbing” is the act of snubbing somebody (with whom you are supposedly conversing) while you read your messages or take calls. When television became a fact of life in South Africa, many people bemoaned the fact that social life as we knew it was on its way out. People were glued to their screens whether or not they had visitors and nobody would dare visit on a Tuesday evening when “Dallas” was on. Fortunately for all concerned televisions
were too heavy to cart around, so you could still have a conversation at the coffee shop, the local store, or in the elevator. The sooner a brochure on “Cell-phone Etiquette” becomes required reading for all and sundry, the better it will be. Since most children (even primary school children) have cell-phones maybe it could become part of the Outcomes Based Education System. Please note that I do not believe that anybody has the right to take a cell-phone to church. In the event of an impending death in the family, one could be excused for having a vibrating cellphone in the church, but for NO other reason. Also it would be nice to go to a coffee shop or restaurant without having to hear the people at the adjoining tables on their cell-phones discussing Johnny’s tonsillectomy or Molly’s continuing affair with the bank manager. On another note, it would be a good idea if at least one of the cell-phone companies made a cell-phone that was a cellphone! The majority of us oldies wants to make and receive calls, send and receive messages and be able to see the time (in large numerals). We are not particularly interested in little machines that can dance, sing, do flick-flacks, play games, take pictures, give you a weather report and a host of other amazing things. Apart from the fact that most oldies don’t use even 20% of what is actually on the cell, surely the price of the abridged version would be easier on the pensioner’s pocket. It would also be nice if they thought of employing at least one person in a cellphone outlet (or a computer help-line) who was older than 30. I am tired of being spoken to as though I am mentally challenged when I query something on the help-line.
“Putting your phone away and paying attention to those talking to you? There’s an APP for that – it’s called RESPECT”.

Oh the incredible irony
Clean up your act SAPS The state-owned building at 39 Ernst Street, Aquapark, which serves a SAPS barraks is disgusting, unkept and an absolute eyesore to residents of an otherwise afluent neighbourhood. Bulletin visited the site and spoke to a police constable who resides in the house. According to him the building, and the yard, is the responsibility of the state and there-
The remnants of the Tzaneen Tourism Info building which was raised to the ground by a fire in October last year frames the signboard of Nguni Grill which by all accounts seems to
be heading for a similar fate. No word has yet come from the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Limpopo (LEDET) on its plans for the site.
for should be maintained and cleaned by them, and not the police officers residing there. At the time of going to print we had not been able to gain any comment on the issue from the police. We have sent the provincial spokesperson an enquiry. Perhaps the state of this property is a reflection on the lack of discipline with our police force?
The contrast between private and state-owned property perfectly depicted in Ernst Street.
How long is 87 years? Many people have a tendency to think that their life is over if they are medically boarded or are forced to retire at age 65. This is of course nonsense. Many people only reach their true potential once they are no longer shackled to the daily grind of normal employment. One of these is ‘Oom’ Koos Coetzee. He was born in Letsitele in 1931 and educated at Erasmus High School in Bronkhorstspruit. After leaving school he joined Iscor and was with them for more than 35 years (obviously not a job-hopper) and was eventually medically boarded after an accident in Witbank. Oom Koos decided to try farming but after three years decided that farming was not for him and returned to the place of his birth in 1983. He was not a man to sit around and take life easy and since he had always been good with his hands, started repairing washing machines. In 1984 he was offered the Speed Queen Agency which he accepted due to the fact that they could promise to have spares de-
livered within 24 hours. According to Oom Koos a woman cannot be without a washing machine for any length of time and he is not prepared to take the blame for uncaring city slickers who have no idea of the necessity of a washing machine and are in no rush to get the spares through promptly. Obviously his work ethic (and his knowledge of women) have helped him in his business which is now in its 34th year. He is nearly 87 years of age and in spite of needing two walking sticks to help him get around, appears to have no immediate plans for retiring. What makes this story even more fascinating is the fact that his right hand man is 70 years of age. Jool is a quiet, unobtrusive man who joined Oom Koos when he started and he also seems to have no thought of retirement. “People like these are the salt of the earth and we wish them both a bright and happy future,” said one long-time resident of the area. — Anthea Gordon anth@telkomsa.net

Pioniers pensioners live in fear
Johan Ferreira, a long-time resident at Pioniers, shows the extent of the erosion on one of the stairways leading to a pedestrian gate the residents use to go to town.
Pensioners living in the municipal owned and managed Pioniers retirement village in Boundary Street have raised their concern over safety and general maintenance of the properties. According to them the council has failed to adequately ensure the safety of the residents in their cottages. Lack of general maintenance of the grounds have become a safety concern too with the majority of walkways too treacherous for the elderly to traverse. The tarred surface of the roads within the village is riddled with potholes and the communal thatched roof lapa situated in the centre of the downtown premises, is in need of replacement. According to the lease agreements entered into between the GTM and the tenants, it is agreed that the tenants are responsible for the upkeep of their respective cottages which they rent from the municipality at R350 a month. In return, the GTM will be responsible for the upkeep of the grounds which includes garden services, refuse removal and security. Lindy Wilson, Deputy Shadow Minister of Social Development for the DA, paid a visit to Pioniers and

addressed the concerns of the residents there, earlier this month after concerns raised with the local ward councillor seemed to be of little use. During her visit the residents each had the opportunity to point out various issues which they felt needed to be addressed. It came to light that though all of the tenants had signed their rental agreements, none of their documents had yet been collected by a municipal official. It was also pointed out that there was a very long waiting list for new prospective tenants and that nobody was certain as to who the person responsible for the monitoring of said list at the municipality was. There was also uncertainty over where the monthly rental money was being allocated to or who was managing the account. “According to our understanding, the money we pay for rent is supposed to be kept aside and used specifically for the maintenance of the grounds around our homes. But we have no idea where the money goes to as it is obviously not being used here,” said one concerned resident. “I have replaced the roof sheeting and gutters on my flat myself recently, as per my agreement, but the very least I expect in return is for the walkways
around my house to be repaired so that I can walk there safely without falling down and breaking a hip or an ankle. This is just not done.” There have been numerous burglaries at this village in recent months. Thieves have held residents at knife point while they rob them of what little valuables they own. Recently, one local security company sponsored a motorised gate at one of the entrances which has improved safety drastically, but there is no other security measure in place to prevent thieves from entering the premises. “It is as though they have forgotten about us old folk here in Boundary Street. We live off government pensions and donations here, so there is no way that we can raise the money to improve the safety here. We are very fortunate that we have beautiful places to stay at the price that we are paying, and we are not bemoaning our living conditions, we are however asking that our municipality step up to the plate.” Yesterday morning, at the time of going to print, Bulletin received word that DA Ward Councillor Tienie Prinsloo and Jacques Smalle paid a visit to the complex to address the residents on a way forward. Wilson has promised to personally follow up the matter with the relevant authorities and find an amicable solution for a way forward.

Merensky archers at ABO Triple Crown The Merensky Archery Club is going places. Eight members participated in the two day, Triple Crown Leg 1 ABO/3Di competition hosted at Magnum Archery in Pretoria on 9 and 10 February. The adventurous range of 22 butts were set in a natural hunting environment over a distance of 1 to 4 km. During this event the archers were divided into groups and aimed at mock-animal targets as they would appear in their natural surroundings. Participants were scored based on their groupings on the target. This type of competition is challenging in the respect that it forces the archers to navigate rocky and often uneven terrain loaded with shrubbery, trees and outcrops which obscure the view. The targets are placed over distances ranging between 10 and 60 meters and archers compete according to draw weight, sex and age. The course usually takes six nail biting hours to
complete. The archers returned home with many awards: Merensky’s prized first team consisting of LinMari Theron, Canell Jackson, Sean Hunt and Ryan Jackson claimed a podium silver and boasted a host of individual achievements. During the competition Sean Hunt and sisters Benéche and Canell Jackson each attained one provincial qualifying score while Dawie and Lin-Mari Theron both achieved two sought after provincial qualifiers. Personal bests were reached by Ryan Jackson, Rohan Wewege and Martin Mostert. The medal winners in their various categories were: coach Dawie Theron achieved gold, LinMari Theron (FY) silver, Canell Jackson (FY) bronze, Benche Jackson (FBO) bronze, Sean Hunt (YMR 15-17) bronze and Martin Mostert (MC) bronze.

Sodoende is hul gekroon as die 2018-Limpopo Skole T20-kampioene.

What a catch
Two Stanfordian cyclists will prove their epic-ness in March when they will brave the mighty Absa Cape Epic. During the week of the 18th to the 25th of March, staff member Steve Wilson and Stanford Lake parent, Mel Melville, will represent Team SLC. ‘The Epic’ is well known to all riders from around the world. Dubbed the ‘Tour de France’ of Mountain
Last year in early October, Marthinus Maritz (then in Grade 9), participated in the Youth Nationals fly fishing competition held in Douglas. His performance qualified him to go through to the Protea trials which took place at Elgro River Lodge (near Potchefstroom) a few days ago. Once again, he qualified at these trials and is eligible for selection for the South African Sport Anglers and Casting Confederation (SASACC) team that will travel to the Czech Republic in May this year to participate in an international competition.
Biking, the race is an extreme event for pro- and amateur riders alike. The total distance of 658km with 13 530m of climbing will include four consecutive days of over 100km over some of the world’s toughest mountain biking terrain. The team hopes to give the College some great exposure and show true ‘badger spirit’ in getting through this challenge.

South African football legend, Mark Fish, paid a visit to Tzaneen this week to meet with local farmers and their workers as part of a new football initiative his foundation, in cooperation with Agri Limpopo, aims to launch here. Born out of the informal soccer matches played among teams of farm workers from different areas in the region, for close on a decade, the ‘ALStars’ soccer tournament is set to kick off sometime next month. If all goes according to plan, the knockout-style tournament will see the final take place at one of the major soccer stadiums as a curtain raiser for one of the PSL clashes in August. “The most noticeable aspect of my meeting with the teams in Georges Valley was the physicality of the players,” said Fish. “These guys are fit and strong and have a true passion for the game. If we can help them become better organized and structured through the establishment of this tournament, we can help develop the game of football in our country. Sport is so much more than just the game, it unites people from across the cultural spectrum whether it be as a player Football legend Mark Fish with Ishmael Letsoalo of Tenby Gardens and Dr Theo De Jager of Agri Limpopo during their breakfast at the popular High Grove restaurant in Tzaneen. or next to the field as a supporter.
