The GTM spokesperson and still acting head of communications, Neville Ndlala, issued no press release to the media regarding the appointments, but as usual opted to post the notice on his personal Facebook page (which he has blocked Bulletin’s editor from). This perpetuates the lack of transparency at the GTM. We apologise to our readers that we cannot honour our ethical obligation to respect the audi alteram partem rule (“hear the other side of the story”). Other developments at the Whitehouse are the appointments of former acting MM, Benjamin Mathebula, as the director for Planning and Economic Development (PED). The position of the director of Community Services was awarded to the Mopani leader of the Mkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association, and staunch Jacob Zuma supporter, Aleck Nkuna. Nkuna who is responsible for security affairs of the ANC in Mopani, is replacing the controversial Obby Mkhombo who served the department as director for more than two decades. Mopani water authority under spotlight The water authority status of the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) could be clouded if the municipality could not handle its finances properly and sustain the position. This follows the provincial meeting of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), held at the Tzaneen showgrounds last week Tuesday. The meeting was attended by all mayors and senior councillors in the province. SALGA executive member on finance, Julia Mathebe, said the problem with municipalities lay with the collection of revenue and credit control measures, coupled with the fact that most municipalities are rural. She said the reason some of the municipalities found themselves in financial woes is because they are rural in nature and cannot bill for the services rendered. She attributed it to the failure of the MDM to pay employees on time.
Mathebe further said that the meeting resolved to refer the financial problems faced by most municipalities to the Executive Committees (EXCO) of the organisation, so it could be seen what action could be taken to remedy the situation. The meeting was also attended by delegates from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), who delivered the financial expertise presentations to delegates. “Mopani District Municipality is a water service authority and, the fiscal crisis they encounter would in future unable it to be a water service authority. As a result, the EXCO of SALGA in Limpopo will meet next week to address the financial crisis rural based municipalities are faced with. Because they could not raise enough revenue, sometimes they fail to even pay workers,” she said. The MDM which has its offices
at Tzaneen and Giyani, was in the news recently when they failed to pay their employees on time. When pay day was due officials borrowed money from outside sources and paid workers a day late. “Unlike town municipalities such as Tzaneen, district municipalities have no residents who are expected to bring in revenue. There are many local municipalities which are rural in their nature and it is hard to collect revenue coupled with the poor credit control mechanisms. Much of the money owed to municipalities is from sector departments,” she added. She pointed a finger at the low growth of district municipalities on the poor collection of data on residents residing within these municipalities. She named the struggling municipalities in Mopani as Greater Giyani, Greater Letaba, and Maruleng municipalities.
Mathebe said when they met as the council, another meeting will be convened to report on the resolutions of the EXCO. She did not say anything about municipalities being placed under administration, but said they will explore available funding as well as train municipal officials on the right way of implementing the credit control and collection of revenue mechanisms. The MDM was very nearly placed under administration a few years before Premier Stanley Mathabatha was appointed. Water provision has since been administered by the national office of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. The vehicles currently driven by employees of the MDM are outsourced from a Gauteng-based vehicle hiring firm Equestra. Major water reticulation operations are implemented by the national office of DWAF. -Jan Mafetsa

Municipal budgets will be adjusted As initially reported by Bulletin earlier this year that municipalities would be holding sittings to adopt municipal adjustments to their budgets in line with the legislative framework, local municipal councils will converge to deliberate on the adjustments to budgets before the motions could be moved for adoption. With the ANC being the majority in Mopani councils, motions will be moved easily. While the other municipalities within the Mopani District remain mum on the subject, Greater Letaba Municipality (GLM) was due to meet by the time of going to print. The purpose of the special sitting of the council was the adoption of the 2017/ 2018 budget adjustments. The meeting was called by the acting municipal manager, David Mhangwana, to be held at the council on Wednesday at 14h00. At the time of going to print we had not re-

proposal that municipal mayors and the speakers should be provided with extra security. They would be provided with several body guards and armed drivers to move them around. Though the move as highly criticised by civil society groups, ordinary councillors would be provided with cellphones loaded with airtime. The special sittings to adjust budgets of municipalities are called for in terms of section 28 (1) of the Municipal Finance Management Act no 56 of 2003. The act stipulates that a certain percentage of the budget of the council could be adjusted to meet the required changes. They have not allocated any special funds for the maintenance and upgrading of the Modjadjiskloof water reticulation system as per their agreement with the Mopani District Municipality. Instead they have said that those funds are included in the maintenance budget. Because the expenses were not allocated in the previous budgets, budget adjustments special sittings allow councils to deliberate on matters that need the budgets adjusted and affords them opportunity to adopt those adjustments. “Their threats still ring in my ears”
Michelle Els
Michelle Els (52) sat on the veranda and recounted the harrowing events of 23rd February which would become an evening her family would never forget. “All I kept saying to myself as I ran through the streets of that township, was that I had to stay alive for the sake of my granddaughter.” It was a regular Friday evening at Zabana, the restaurant Michelle has owned and managed for the past sixteen years. Her son Michael (32) a chef at the restaurant, had returned home from Dubai in October last year with the intention of eventually taking over the business from his mom. They shared a house on the same property as the restaurant with Michael’s pre-school daughter. They closed early that night, at around 21:30, and once at home, Michelle retired to her bed and Michael stayed up on the porch where he enjoyed a sundowner before bed. His 5-year old toddler was asleep in her own room. “I was on my phone when out of the darkness two men suddenly approached me and put a gun against my chest. They indicated that I not make a noise and asked who was in the house. I said only my mom and daughter. They then escorted me into the house. We went into my mom’s room and I woke her up,” recounted a visibly traumatised Michael. Two of the suspects used police-issue handcuffs to tie Michael’s wrists behind his back. Nylon rope, which they had brought along with them, secured his legs. They lay him down next to Michelle’s bed. The other gunman pulled Michelle out of bed and demanded money or they would kill her son and granddaughter. “One of the guys wore a balaclava and was extremely aggressive. He shouted ‘don’t look at me you white b*tch’ and demanded cash. I told him that we don’t have much money on us, and so he demanded I gave him my pin number for my banking cards. I had to repeat the number to him over and over,” Michelle said. “The three guys then took me out of the house and to the restaurant where they demanded all the money in the safe and the tills. They also took bottles of booze and some cigarettes before we went back to the house.”
Tears welled up in her eyes. “I thought they had killed Michael because I could only see his feet sticking out behind the bed and he wasn’t moving.” One of the men held a knife to her throat and forced her out the house again. The group was armed with 9mm pistols, walked along the boundary of the property, through the bush and to the main road. There, they flagged down a white Nissan bakkie which pulled into the property. Five of the gang’s members jumped onto the back of the vehicle and Michelle was loaded into the cab next to the driver. The knife-wielding assailant climbed onto her lap and again pressed the blade against her throat. “We are now going to kill you and your granddaughter. She is here, on the back of the bakkie, we are going to kill both of you.” She was not allowed to look at the suspects or the road and had to keep her head down the whole way. According to what Michelle remembers, the vehicle drove along the R71 and took a left turn at the four-way intersection at Tzaneen Country Lodge. There they left the road onto a dirt road and stopped a way in the bush. “I was pulled out of the vehicle and thrown to the front of the bakkie by the guy who was sitting on my lap. The driver, a big fat guy, came over to me and said that I now had to remove my clothes. He tried to kiss me and I nearly vomited. He asked me if I had AIDS and then did what he planned to do. When it was all over they drove off and left me there. I was terrified for the safety of my granddaughter as I thought they had killed my son and were now going to kill her too.” Michelle mustered her strength and started running. As she ran, she drew crosses in the sand every few metres so that she could later find her way back to the scene. Her 20 years in the police force had taught her the importance of a crime scene and she knew that she would have to bring the police detectives back there for clues. “I was barefoot and had no idea where I was but I could see lights in the distance and heard music so I just ran. Each time a car drove past I jumped into the bushes for fear that they had come back to finish me off.” Finally she came to a village and started screaming for help as she passed the houses in the streets. A young man was texting on his phone next to the road. Michelle ran up to him and asked for help. “The young man didn’t see me at first and when I called out to him, he looked at me in shock as he wasn’t expecting a white women in the village at that time of night. Shame, I think I must’ve scared him! I said to him please, please, you must take me to the police station they’ve taken my granddaughter and already killed my son, I must get help!” The young man offered to have Michelle stay with his family for the night as the police station was too far to walk to. After insisting that the matter could not wait, the young man gave her his phone and she dialled for help. By this time it was already 01:20 the following morning. A search had already been underway for Michelle after Michael had managed to loosen himself and call for help by biting on the panic button remote receiver. A taxi transporting night shift workers from Bushvalley Chicken, stopped next to Michelle in the township and asked if he could drive her to Mamitwa satellite police station. On the way to the station the taxi driver phoned Major Genl Maggie Mathebula, the Tzaneen cluster commander. “The General spoke to me over the phone and asked where I was. I had no clue but I told her that I’m on my way to Mamitwa police station, but they need to find my granddaughter.” Michelle was still under the impression that her granddaughter had been abducted and Michael killed by the gunmen. At the police station, a constable came up to Michelle and said “your son is at the Tzaneen police station, and your granddaughter
was found in her bed, she is fine. They are both fine ma’am.” Within 20 minutes after she arrived at the station, members of the Letaba Brandwag Farm Watch, security companies and neighbourhood watch groups arrived on the scene. She was transported to Mediclinic Tzaneen by ER24 personnel where she was treated accordingly. Michael explained that while he was trying to loosen himself of his bonds, he was under the impression that his daughter was taken with his mom by the suspects. “It was deathly quiet in the house and I couldn’t move. The cuffs were on so tight it was impossible to free myself so I hopped over to the kitchen and managed to bite the panic button remote with my teeth. I was too scared to push the alarm button as it activates the sirens and the lights and I wasn’t sure if the guys were still on the property which might cause them to come back. I was certain that if I spooked them they would kill all three of us.” Eventually he made his way out of the house towards the night guard quarters and he started screaming for help. The night guard rushed outside and started untying Michael’s legs. The pair then called for help. “I cannot explain to anyone what goes through one’s mind at that stage. I didn’t know where my mom and daughter were, or whether they were still alive. It is the most helpless feeling the world. It’s because it was so quiet in the house, I never thought of going back inside until the police, farm watch and the medics arrived,” he paused and gave a deep breath. “When the policeman came out of the house and said he found my daughter sound asleep in her bed and that I should go fetch her, I literally broke down.” The little girl had not been touched during the entire ordeal, nor had she woken up at any point, even when the suspects ransacked the house looking for money. She didn’t even know what had happened when her daddy woke her and carried her outside. This was the second time this happened to Michelle and her son. The first time, sixteen years ago, they were staying in the same house, and the events that unfolded were almost identical letter. “It was as if we had experienced déja-vu, even the room at Mediclinic we were treated in was the same as the last time. We also have the very same investigating officer on the case. This was however, the last straw.” Zabana has been closed for business following this incident and a spate of robberies in the past. The Els’ no longer live on the property either and have moved into town. There are plans for the future, but for now, “we need to process this and find our feet. Zabana was my life for so long and it is sad that it has come to this, but we’re done. Chapter closed.” — Joe Dreyer

Mark Scott-Crossley in court Friday Naphuno magistrate court in Lenyenye township will be the centre of activity this afternoon when Mark Scott-Crossley will be appearing in court to continue with the application for his bail. The Limpopo police spokesperson has confirmed that Crossley will appear today. Every time he showed himself in court he is accompanied by throngs of journalists from the mainstream media. The case is sequel to an incident in December 2016 when Scott-Crossley allegedly overran a farm worker from a neighbouring farm in Hoedspruit, Victor Mabunda. The victim claimed that he was on his way from the shop when the car driven by
Scott-Crossley approached him. After the incident Scott-Crossley disappeared and had to hand himself over to the police in Pretoria. He has since been denied bail. The incident occurred after he was serving a suspended sentence for murder, after he allegedly threw one of his employees into a lion’s den. He received a suspended sentence, but before he could finish his term he was arrested again for another charge, this time of attempted murder. The case has since been widely publicized with
each appearance met with protests from community members supported by the ANC. Bulletin will be attending the hearing and will keep you updated on the events as they happen. We want to hear your thoughts on the case, so please send us any comments that you might have. — Jan Mafetsa

Child arrested A ten year old was among the 20 people arrested by the Maake police outside Tzaneen, during the weekend for various criminal activities that ranged from possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of a stolen vehicle, arson, and robbery to name but a few. Maake police spokesperson, Const. Emmanuel Manabe, described the success of the police over the past weekend as follows: four people were nabbed for burglary, one for cruelty to animals, four for fraud, one for possession of an unlicensed firearm and pointing of a firearm. Three for malicious damage to property, one for possession of dagga, two for possession of a stolen vehicle, one for arson and two for common assault. In another incident a man was arrested after a bulldozer was stolen on the premises of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), at Runnymede near Nwamitwa village recently. According to a reliable source, the driver arrived with the machine from
Nkowankowa’s former teacher turned politician, former Limpopo Premier and Chairperson of the ANC, Charles Cassel Mathale, was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Small Business Development on Monday evening. His appointment came during
the field, and parked it without removing the keys of the vehicle from the ignition. Allegedly someone came and took the machine from the premises. However the driver has been taken by the police for questioning. Also in the Ritavi policing area, the police opened an attempted murder case after the stomach of a grade 11 pupil was ripped open with a knife by a fellow pupil at Mbekwana high school at Nw`amitwa village outside Tzaneen. The police described the incident as an act of bullying. Police spokesperson Capt. Mohale Ramatseba, confirmed the incident and issued a warning to parents. He said the police are appealing to parents and guardians in particular to ensure that children go to school unarmed. Spokesperson for the Department of Education Sam Makondo, also condemned the incident saying the weapons are taken from home hence parents should intervene. — Jan Mafetsa
the long overdue reshuffling of parliament by President Cyril Ramaphosa. He was an ordinary Member of Parliament under the Jacob Zuma Administration and now deputises Lindiwe Zulu. Mathale was removed as the premier in 2013 after his Limpopo government administration was put under administration for allegedly misappropriating more than R2.3 billion from the Limpopo public purse. Though Mathale was not charged, his then political cronies and business partners, Selby Manthata and Julius Malema, were charged for corruption and money laundering - but the charges were later withdrawn. Prior to the Nasrec conference of the ANC, Mathale was criss-crossing the province addressing members of the ANC on the need to elect Nkosazana Zuma as the president of the ANC. It is reported that Mathale was the driving force behind Mopani throwing its weight behind the slate of NDZ during the run up to Nasrec.
He was born in Dan village outside Nkowankowa, and later stayed on in the township where he attended school at Bokgaga High before he proceeded to Tivumbeni College of Education to train as a teacher. Mathale then joined the South African Students Organisation (SASO). He later joined the ANC and was influential during the formation of new branches after they were unbanned together with other political parties such as AZAPO, and the PAC. He served as the provincial chairperson of the Northern Province Youth Commission (NPYC) and was later appointed the provincial secretary of the ANC in the province before being appointed the chairperson and subsequently the premier. Mathale could not finish his terms as chairperson and premier, because he was removed and sent to Parliament as a back bencher. He was influential in the construction of many access roads in the province during his tenure. In his own village of Dan, there are three tarred roads, residents do not complain of water and there is a running sewage project completed recently. He would be remembered for raising money to build the offices of the ANC in Mopani and is credited with building the Khujwana tarred road. — Jan Mafetsa
Brothers denied bail for beheading sister Two brothers aged 22 and 31-years from Matikoxikaya village outside Phalaborwa, were denied bail at the Namakgale magistrate’s court on Tuesday after they allegedly decapitated their older sister. The victim shared a home with her siblings in the village following the deaths of their parents many years before. Limpopo police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said Victor (31) and his sibling
Ishmael Mopai (22) were arrested by the police on Sunday morning after their sister, Irene Mopai, was found dead with her head removed at the base of her neck. Ngoepe said when the police asked the brothers what had happened they said they saw nothing as they were asleep and playing the radio on full volume. Further investigations however uncovered the gruesome truth.
They were charged with murder and defeating the end of justice. The brothers were denied bail after they appeared in court, and their case has been postponed to the 8th of March for further bail applications. A relative, Annah Mopai, said the family is still shocked from the incident as there was no altercations between the victim and the suspects prior to the incident. She said the family sus-
pects the killing might have been ritually motivated because of the manner in which the murder took place and the subsequent beheading. Community leader and businesswoman in the village, Maggie Ngomana, said it was the first time such an incident took place in that village. Ngomana appealed to community leaders to get together and raise funds so the victim could be buried with dignity.

Granny’s Grumbles – Animal Activists
Some 50 years ago in a small farming village in Rhodesia there was a very interesting young couple named Jason and Fern. Fern had eloped with Jason a year previously at the age of 20. By the time I met Fern I had already heard plenty about her. Apart from the fact that she was extremely attractive, she dressed like no other farm assistant’s wife. Since her husband was employed on a farm that was fairly close to us, we became friends. I happened to mention that my husband was going away on a hunting trip for a week. She was horrified to hear that I was going to be on my own and insisted that I should go and stay with them. I accepted the invite and duly arrived at their home. Fern had obviously stripped all the linen and curtains from her parents’ home before running away with Jason as I had never seen a farm assistant’s home looking so classy. However, the piece de resistance was the new “long drop” that she had insisted that Jason organise. The cherry on top was the fact that it was a raised toilet – one walked up two steps to get to the sitting position. I was fairly overwhelmed when I actually sat up on the throne. Whilst I was sitting pondering the elegance of my present position I noticed a movement on the floor and saw a mouse chewing away at something. It didn’t appear at all worried about me waving my legs around and I suddenly noticed that it was eating cheese – not from a trap – pieces of cheese in neat little squares appeared to have been put in a strategic
corner. I could hardly believe my eyes. When I returned to the house I immediately mentioned it to Fern. She was delighted “Oh – that’s Mickey –I always leave little squares of cheese for him”. I was stunned to say the least – mice and rats were killed on sight in farming areas as they continually ate the cattle feed and any other feed that happened to be around. I felt that I should let her know how the majority felt, but Jason gave me a warning look accompanied by a shake of the head. A little later when we were alone Jason explained to me that Fern was not really a farm girl and he didn’t think that she had ever seen a mouse prior to coming to the farm. She thought they were cute little things. A couple of days later they invited a neighbouring farm couple to dinner and cards. That evening the five of us were sitting on the carpet with a hurricane lamp perched up on the table lighting up the area enjoying the game when I saw a small shape running along the floor. A short while later I saw what I assumed was the same shape running back again. Now what should I do? Just keep quiet or mention that Mickey had moved into the house? A short while later the problem was no longer mine when the neighbour’s wife saw a mouse and shrieked. Fern just smiled and said “Oh – that’s Lucifer”. The neighbours obviously didn’t know of Fern’s love for “cute little mice” and the husband was letting rip with statistics on deaths that could be attributed directly or indirectly to mice. Fern looked devastated. It was evident that she didn’t realise that if you see one mouse there are probably scores more. Fern however, was adamant that there was only one mouse (and that was Lucifer) living under the bookcase. Jason decided to seize the moment – he and the neighbour went to either end of the book-case and lifted it. Adult mice scattered in all directions and seven babies lolled around in a nest made from the remains of some cherished book which had been gnawed away from the back of the book-case. Fern was astounded – whether by the size of the mouse family or by the fact that they had repaid her hospitality by chewing up an expensive book I don’t know. The next morning the mice were evicted. Nowadays I often wonder if Fern was possibly (quite unwittingly) the first animal activist.

Hy is goed. Tweede gedagte wat ons vandag moet hoor is dat daar geen einde is aan Sy liefde nie. Genadiglik het God nie lief soos ons somtyds liefhet nie. Ons het somtyds so selfsugtig lief, alles gaan oor my. Groete in Christus.

More food choices in village Another two small restaurants have opened their doors in Rissik Street, Haenertsburg this year. Glynis Geere has started one at the Pennefather complex. The 36-seater restaurant has been named “Once Upon a Thyme”. This is in sync with the Memory-Hold-TheDoor bookstore within the complex. Glynis says the idea came upon her as every fairy story begins with ‘once upon a time’. Glynis recently retired from the privately-owned sawmill, Stevens Lumber Mills, where she held a top position and had worked there for 41 years. She’s always been passionate about good food, having learnt from her grandmother and her mother. During her illustrious career at the Mill, Glynis formed a catering company, called Gals, and organised many fund raisers for the village hall as well as cooked for many functions. All restaurant prepping is done at the family home outside the village. All ingredients are fresh, nothing is frozen, and everything is home baked. Glynis has both a herb and vegetable garden at home. The herbs are grown in tunnels and the vegetables in boxes. What she doesn’t grow in her own garden, she buys in from local growers. As we sit over a Boeretroos coffee (that’s coffee with condensed milk), Glynis says that her daughter, Tammy van Emmenis, is in charge of advertising and marketing for the restaurant and often helps out with the prepping. Once Upon a Thyme is open from 09:00 to 16:00 from Wednesdays to Sundays. The other restaurant, Something Different, owned by Bev and Charlie Hartman, is in the nearby Greenwoods complex. Bev and
Charlie, from Phalaborwa, with business and property interests still there, fell in love with the Haenertsburg area and have had a cottage on the outskirts of the village for the past three years. The Hartman couple rent out the entire Greenwoods which consists of a lawyer’s office, a deli, a gift shop and other office space. Bev and Charlie met at the Phalaborwa SPCA some seven years ago. Charlie was Chairman and Bev was secretary. Both were divorced, and when they married, they gained five children and seven grandchildren between them. Bev matriculated in Phalaborwa and then married and raised children in the town. Charlie studied architecture at the University of Cape Town. Together with friends he became a trapeze artist in the circus for a number of years. He travelled around Europe for six years and then had a serious accident in Denmark. He moved to London to set up an architectural practice. His brother had a restaurant called the Mediterranean in Poole in Dorset. To give his brother a break, Charlie took over the restaurant on weekends. After 25 years of living in London, Charlie returned to South Africa and opened up his air conditioning business in Phalaborwa. Some-

thing Different, which seats 22 people, is open daily from 09:00 to 16:00. Another project in the pipeline is to find a solution to the feral cat problem in the village. The feral cat population has been increasing alarmingly with three litters having been born recently. Due to their knowledge gained whilst with the SPCA, Bev and Charlie will co-ordinate all the necessary steps to stem the feral cat population growth. This will involve fund raising to neuter and vaccinate the felines as well as food for the animals. The community is asked to support this movement as the feral cat population is now well and truly out of control.
Nguni no more? It appears that the Nguni Restaurant in Tzaneen has given its final call. At the time of going to print Bulletin learnt that the restaurant had been closed since the beginning of the week as it apparently had no running water. An employee at the restaurant told us that Nick Englezakis, the controversial businessman who owns the establishment, owes the GTM a substantial amount of money and this is the reason why the power and water supply to the building had been cut. The employee also divulged Englezaki’s plans to install JoJo water tanks at the restaurant to enable them to continue trade, but this proved to be too costly. Former managers of both Misty River Spur and later Nguni Tzaneen have still not been paid their December and January salaries and the current staff claim that
they too have not yet been paid. Bessie and Riaan Heine have had to move to another town in search of employment and one manager currently still in Tzaneen is struggling to put food on the table because of Englezaki’s non-payment. When Bulletin spoke to Englezakis previously, he admitted that business was not going well, but blamed it on the economic turmoil in the area and the spate of business robberies. “I was not aware of the state of the town with regards to all the crime and the drop in business,” the Gauteng-based businessman said. “We are still committed to the Tzaneen consumers and I will be back in town to sort out payments and outstanding accounts.” This appears to have been an empty promise. We have since not been able to reach Englezakis on his cellphone for further comment.

A break in the Clouds for Interlaer Primary Duiwelskloof Primary proudly hosted the Interlaer Primary Schools athletics meeting on Saturday, 24 February. Despite fears of a rainy day, after a week of continuous rain, the organisers held their heads up high and pushed through with hopes for a break in the clouds. The clouds parted indeed for the morning and the event started with a fantastic spirit of community and healthy sportsmanship with the schools marching in with their banners to Mr Houston, headmaster of Unicorn Preparatory School, playing his bagpipe. Altogether there were 13 schools from the Letaba District who came together in Modjadjiskloof to participate in this event namely, Dr. Annecke, Drakensig, Fauna Park, Laerskool Gravelotte, Laerskool Mariepskop, Pfunanane Academy, Laerskool Phalaborwa, Phalaborwa-Noord, The King’s Court, Laerskool Tzaneen, Unicorn Preparatory School, Unity Primary en Laerskool Duiwelskloof. All 13 of the schools, big and small, performed very well. Leandré de Lange from Laerskool Tzaneen won the Junior Vixtrix Lodorum for the day, and from Unity Primary, Mfihlo Baloyi walked away with the Junior Victor Lodorum, who was also the Best Senior Track Athlete. Senior Victrix Lodorum went to Thapelo Malatji
from Drakensig Primary in Hoedspruit and the Senior Victor Lodorum was Miyelani Nkuna from Unicorn Preparatory School. Casey van Wyk from Mariepskop went home with the title of Best Senior Field Athlete and the Best U/10 general athlete of the day went to The King’s Court’s Tanaka Murisa. Two U/10 athletes from Dr Annecke Primary outperformed in their events by breaking records. Musa Shikwambana broke the record for 1200m and Shasha Blessie for shot put. Laerskool Tzaneen Primary also boasted with five new records. Elandri Janse van Rensburg improved the U/13 Javelin record by an astonishing 2.79m setting the new record at 32.73m. Megan-Lee Mans improved the U/12 Shotput from 9.39m to 9.43m. Ignus Ferreira did the 1200m (U/10) in 4:28:35, a full 2:15 stretch faster than the previous record. Amoré Duvenhage and Hillmari Kruger, both beat the previous record of 6.46m for the shot put U/12, and Duvenhage’s impressive 7.50m now holds the new title. The day came to a cheerful closure as the rain held out to the very end. Laerskool Duiwelskloof Primary would like to thank all involved in the organising of this event for the efforts towards a very successful day.

The popular WoWee Wednesdays talent showcase is hosted twice a term by the culture prefects at Merensky High School and these prefects and performers have not let the rain dampen their passion with an attitude of “When it rains on your parade, move to another venue!” On Thursday 22 February, these pupils simply moved their WoWee Wednesday “parade” to the school hall as opposed to their usual Bee Hive spot. Singers, dancers and musicians wowed their audience with well known performers Jordin Young, Jaco van Staden and Crystal Kirstein and exciting newcomer, Verliza Fox, who promised to keep rocking the Plasie stage.

Despite speculation as to whether the annual Inter-High Athletics meet would take place last weekend, because of the heavy rains, the event did take place – and it was a resounding success. Local high school, Mer-

ensky and their Phalaborwa neighbours, Frans Du Toit, made the trek to Mussina where they faced off against Eric Louw, Louis Trichardt, PHS, Northern Academy and Tom Naude. The competition was fierce both on the track and the stand as the schools’ supporters painted the Eric Louw grand stands in the brightest of outfits, framed with a thousand voices as they vied for the spirit cup. It was a true showcase and a reminder of what high school sports is all about. Merensky’s Blue Brigade put up a very strong performance with their athletes giving the PHS Powerhouse a run for their money to secure a second place overall with 632 points. PHS won day with an outstanding 759 points. Louis Trichardt managed to pick up bronze on 423 points with Tom Naude and Frans Du Toit in fourth and fifth positions respectively. The hosts had to settle for the sixth position on 144 points, just 40 more than the tail-enders, Northern Academy.
Individually however, Merensky’s athletes held their own to scalp 109 medals including 37 gold, 44 silver and 28 bronze. Dylan Herrendoerfer was named Senior Victor Ludorum, while Sancha van Niekerk shared the Senior Victrix Ludorum title with Alida du Preez from PHS. Zuleika Ferns was awarded the trophy for Junior Victrix Ludorum. Kesia Pohl was named the best senior girls field athlete of the day, while Andru Miller was the best senior boys track athlete. Frans Du Toit High’s shotput juggernaut, Lucian Simpson, demolished all in his path when he recorded a new Boys U/17 shotput distance of 16.19m. He bettered the existing record by 4cm and then focussed his attention on the Boys U/17 discuss event. In this event Simpson catapulted his

discuss a massive 44.60 metres to chalk up another new record for the day. The existing record was 44.22m. Merensky’s Plasie Park, will be the proud hosts of the 2019 instalment of the inter-High 2019 and athletics fans are said to be in for a treat. — Joe Dreyer
