A loan of R90 million was granted to the Greater Tzaneen Municipality by the Development Bank of South Africa earlier this month. The loan is divided into R30 million a year over three years and is destined to be used solely for the upgrading of the GTM’s electrical infrastructure. This was revealed at an Electrical Forum Meeting (EFM) held on the 4th of May at the main council boardroom at the offices of the GTM. The media was not invited to attend, but we were handed minutes of the meeting after the fact (we still are not sure why these meetings are held outside the media’s eye, but c’est la vie). In attendance at the meeting were members of Agri Letaba, including its chairperson Pie-

ter Vorster, Sam Lelope the GTM Electrical Chief, representatives from NERSA and Lindile Mbewu of the DBSA. No formal agenda was available as the meeting was called by Thapelo Matlala, the newly appointed Municipal Manager. According to him it was in order to have the DBSA share their views on the situation with the members of the forum. Mbewu addressed the meeting and explained that the R90 million was not a grant, but a loan which would serve as a means to get the ball rolling. He acknowledged that the amount was but a drop in the ocean as it was reported last year that R600 million was needed to bring the GTM power grid up to scratch. But he is of the view that it is a step

in the right direction. “We will be monitoring this municipality very closely as the DBSA is very strict in terms of how every cent of a loan amount is spent and why. We will be paying regular visits to the GTM to inspect the situation and make sure the money is allocated towards its intended purpose,” Mbewu said. He reiterated that prioritization is crucial to identify areas which need to be dealt with first. Once the money has been given to GTM, the DBSA will keep visiting the Municipality to check on the progress, to consult with the customers to get feedback on the change and the impact that the financial input, has made on improving and renewing the system. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Is the GTM power crisis over? “No. This time of year merely offers a slight reprise from the frequent and prolonged power outages which the residents of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality have become accustomed to. There are no winds, and not so much rain, which means there are usually significantly less power outages than in the summer.” According to our source within the GTM, many consumers may feel that there is a significant change in the frequency or period of the outages, but this is merely an eye blind. “What happens is now, when your power trips at your home, it is switched on at the power station. If it trips again, that is when they leave the switch off and send out an electrical team to the site to find the fault. Because of the weather conditions this time of year, there are very few of these outages. But the power crisis is long from over.” The municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala has unveiled his plans to use the funds received from the DBSA during this “cooldown

period” between seasons, to ensure that vegetation control is implemented and that more technicians are employed. A number of other key concerns have also been identified and prioritized. Regarding the concern many residents in the Agatha, Yamorna, Hamawasha and Pompagalana areas have expressed regarding the missing transformer at the Yamorna Substation, our source revealed that this has very little impact on the situation. “That substation is still standing empty, but the transformer that was there and which was removed a year ago, is really just a ‘nice-to-have’ more than an essential component to the grid. It was installed years ago as a means to counter the outages during the Agatha fires, and would be able to sustain the power in that area in case of fires. But its absence has no real bearing on the current situation.” Besides the fact that most of the main substations in the GTM’s grid (which comprises of nearly 138 substations) have insufficient

protection due to theft of buzzbars and the close-on 100 dysfunctional auto-reclosers (which cost in the region of R200 000 each to replace – excluding the R500 000 for installation) there is still the issue of whether or not Sam Lelope is qualified to head the Electrical Engineering Department. According to our information, he is allegedly not qualified in accordance to the OHSA General Machines Regulations Act. We have also learnt that the GTM has allegedly found a way around this by employing a qualified engineer as a consultant. Lelope allegedly works under the supervision of this consultant which means that should anything go wrong, the consultant is qualified to take responsibility. In the past, the GTM have denied that Lelope is not qualified. We have issued them with another enquiry regarding these allegations and we will report on their comment in the next edition. — Joe Dreyer joe@bulletn.us.com

The Message

Granny’s Grumbles - Motivational Talks

Many years ago when I worked for the local mine, I was told that many of us who were supposedly approaching retirement age would be attending a motivational talk on how to handle one’s retirement. Since I was only 52 I was rather surprised but what the heck. You get a day off work and mix with friends. When the speaker arrived we were all rather taken aback – he was 78 years old, a wizened little man wearing shorts and a vest. It transpired that he had just climbed Mt Kilimanjaro for the second time and then proceeded to do press-ups and touch

his toes 50 times to show us how fit he was. Of course all of this did not happen merely because he had good genes – it was due to good food and exercise. He was actually a very nice man – hale and hearty – and extremely fit. Looking around at some of my beer-swilling, braai-loving compatriots I wasn’t actually sure that this was what they had in mind to approach their soon-to-be retirement years. At the age of 58 I was once again invited to take part in yet another motivation talk on retirement. Off I went wondering if our Mr Kilimanjaro was still around and ready to take us on another trip. Well, our second motivational speaker was a world away from the first. He looked like an advertisement for a true Aryan and was only short of a tennis racket to finish the picture. He started off by telling us that he was 52 years of age and he only looked as good as he did through the right lifestyle. His trophy wife (aged 26) was sitting at the back with his twin sons (aged 3). One assumes that this scenario was meant to impress upon the men present that they too could enjoy a much younger wife and twin sons well into their old age as long as they listened to his advice. Needless to say, exercise (especially tennis) and correct eating was the answer to all and every problem that you might experience when you get older. When it came to question time he asked what we considered to be of importance when deciding upon where we should settle. Somebody said that obviously good

medical facilities were important. Not at all! According to our young Greek god as long as we ate the proper food and exercised there would be no need of medical facilities. (Heaven help those who got knocked down by a car or tripped over the cat!!) Now – some years later when I had left the mine a Canadian company had been awarded the contract for the drilling and blasting of the new underground project. My husband met the manager of the company who came to our home on a social visit and mentioned that numerous Canadian families would be arriving shortly. During the course of the evening it became apparent that he was obsessed with looking for mosquitoes and discussing black mambas – also mentioned that everybody had signed forms agreeing to take anti-malaria tablets for the full period of their contract – 4 years. I told him that the local doctors most certainly didn’t agree with residents living on prophylactics and said that the chances of meeting up with a mamba in the middle of the residential area, especially if one was in a flat, were practically zero. These alarming facts about life in Phalaborwa had been brought about by the speaker that had come to give everybody in their company the low-down on what they were to expect. He was a Jamaican who had never actually been to South Africa but had studied it extensively – via Google no doubt. Now why am I telling you all this – well if you are unemployed – try selling yourself as a motivational speaker!! It works for some people.

Rev Ron Reiners Anglican Church SHALOM. A true Apostle is one who lived in the time of Jesus and was with Him and saw His resurrection, the rest of us are therefore not Apostles but rather “followers of Christ” or disciples, yet many love to take on titles like Apostle….. or, Prophet…. Not that I am denying that there are prophets out there. My concern is that many elevate themselves above others, often, forgetting that they too are sinners just like the rest of us. This is also a trend with many who gain academic qualifications, the need to be recognized as someone more important than others. In Jesus’ life time there were those who also elevated themselves above others, thinking that they were holier than the common people, viz. the Sanhedrin and Pharisees. No one could speak directly to God except the High Priest. Jesus comes and lives like a commoner, a normal human being. Never did He elevate Himself, rather He was the “Servant King.” He encourages all to accept His teachings, often to the great concern of the leaders at the time. He was here with a definite purpose and that was to restore our relationship with God. All who accepted Him then and now are called the children of God. He was never known as any other name than “Rabboni” or teacher. Never is it written that He was called any other name than Jesus. So why do we continue to take on titles? In some churches the priest is referred to as “Father” yet in the scriptures we learn that it is wrong to call anyone “Father” other than God. I am an ordained priest and my title is Reverend, but it is only to indicate that I have studied to gain this qualification. I therefore to be called by my birth name, Ronald or just plain Ron as I too am a disciple of Jesus and it is my sole duty to spread Jesus’ love to others, which is the Gospel.

— Joe Dreyer joe@bulletin.us.com

Leather shop does business in village Haenertsburgers Janet and Colin Blackburn opened Blackburn Leather at 18 Rissik Street five months ago. Colin, a master leather craftsman, and Janet, who’s bowing out of 25 years as a successful estate agent, has taken over the marketing. This business was started to leave a legacy to their creative children. The youngest, Israel, is already in the business. The handbags, lined in shwishwe are sold out. The rifle slings and belts are the best sellers and there’s a demand for big boys and

girls sized belts. Colin says, “Guys bigger than a 42” waist have a problem finding belts.” Signature beaded safety pins, with round leather discs, are attached to each sold item. A percentage of all sales goes to PASA (Parkinson’s and related movement disorders Association of South Africa). Blackburn Leather also sells their waste and customers can rummage through and buy a bag of waste for R10. The couple also sells Nguni skins. Janet, the fourth generation on The Mountain, met Zimbabwean born Colin twenty

on a game farm in the Soutpansberg. Colin is genetically disposed to the leather craft industry. His great grandfather, Joe Blackburn from Bournemouth in the UK, was a master leather crafter. Joe perished in a shipwreck while en route from the UK to Cape Town in 1885. Colin also lays claim to being related to William Wordsworth on his father’s side through William’s sister Mary. Colin was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease at the age of 41 in 2012. His health was already compromised in a serious car accident in 2000. He lost a kneecap, had a broken neck, a dislocated hip and drop foot i.e. a paralysed foot. “My left hand is pretty useless and I shake now,” he says. Janet says, “Colin has the technical ability and I have the marketing skills. Eventually I’ll become Colin’s hands as his physical ability is declining. Meanwhile Colin’s also training our children to join the business.”

Rotararians hold a sociable think tank Haenertsburg Rotary held a function in their village headquarters on Wednesday evening. Regarded as a social, in which outsiders are invited, it was a wonderful insight into the think tank of this organisation involving the best brains in the area. Marberg Rotary in Germany has made a $30 – 50,000 grant available for ECD (Early Childhood Development) at Thusanang. The Haenertsburg Football Club team was discussed. This will be developed together with the Mark Fish Foundation geared towards farm workers. A coaching day will be held for the top two in the team. The Alfa Romeo Club was also discussed. The Italian-manufactured auto club holds charitable events throughout South Africa and will be invited to come to the

area. Donations will go to one of the local charities. Invited guest, Tito Mboweni, raised the issue of 500 students at the University of Limpopo who do not have money for food. The slide show involved the latest in drone technique. Rotary president, Paddy Ansell, saw this in operation in Marrakesh recently. The drone seeds hectares of land in record time to restore forests and mango swamps. Although a great innovation it was deemed not possible in South Africa due to the country’s inherent dry conditions. The drone was also discussed in the possibility of the recreation of disused mining areas. However it would not be possible as top soil would have to be recreated first and that is a huge expense.

1. Reason for dispensing with the prescribed procedure: With due regard to administrative efficiency and effectiveness the original contract amount has been extended with an amount exceeding twenty (20) percent of the original bid value in order to complete the following contracts: GLM001/2016c: Construction of Modjadjiskloof Gabions was initially planned to be implemented in-house and entailed the installation of gabion boxes for erosion prevention measure to the earthfill. It emerged that the section of road along Hospitaal Street collapsed and posed an extreme risk for fatal accident eventuality. The complexity of damages on the collapsed section of road required technical support from professional engineering firm to design the earthfill, construction supervision until commissioning the roadworks repairs at section of Hospitaal Street due to collapsed earthfill, as well as gabion construction supervision. The collapsed road severe damages were unforeseen. GLM014/2017: Construction of 446 Households Electrification of Tshabela-Matswale, Tshwelomotse A & B, Sebinakgolo, Las Vegas, Jokong, and Rapitsi Villages tthe initial project scope was aimed to cover 446 Household connections. It was discovered at design stage after survey completion that actual stands on the ground have increased drastically to 832, yielding a variance of 386 Household connections. Designs for the full scope of 832 Household connections was undertaken in order to be fully compliant to Eskom requirements, taking into consideration that these designs should cover all connections including vacant stands for future occupation. The additional 386 household connections was unplanned for and could not be avoided while servicing the surrounding stands benefiting from the initial 446 households project scope within the same areas/ villages. 2. New Isuzu SUV — Iron in a velvet glove It’s really no secret that Isuzu is one of the top-selling bakkie in the local market with sales of its popular KB range, regularly tipping the scales at the 1 000 units a month mark. As most in the industry will know, the Japanese manufacturer no longer retails its products under the General Motors banner and it is therefore fitting that the new Isuzu MU-X represents its first solo new vehicle launch on local soil. The introduction of the MU-X offers a family-style option for Isuzu lovers to step into. While many of the components are shared with the outgoing Chevrolet Trailblazer, Isuzu insists that its engineers have had a hand in differentiating the MU-X as an Isuzu and not a badge-engineered Chevrolet. While the bakkie / SUV hybrids are really nothing new to the South African market – with the frontrunners currently being the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Everest models, the MU-X slots perfectly into the segment. With its stylish yet rugged looks and ample chrome trimmings, the MU-X is the embodiment of “iron in a velvet glove” and below, we tell you why: Transmission and engine specifications The impressive Isuzu MU-X is powered by a 3.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine with admirable peak outputs of 130 kW and 380 Nm, giving it the necessary power to tow caravans and trailers, whilst featuring a braked tow rating of no less than 3000 kg. This all-rounder is available with a choice of either 4x2 rear-wheel drive or part-time 4x4 drive. The 4x4 features Isuzu’s Terrain Com-

mand 4x4 system with electronically selected 2-High, 4-High and 4-Low modes. With a ground clearance of 230mm, a 24 degree approach angle and a departure angle of an impressive 25.1 degrees, teamed with extensive underbody protection such as a steel guard protector for the sump and transfer case, gives the MU-X impressive offroad capability.

The Isuzu MU-X comes in 2 models; 3.0 4X2 AT6 and 3.0 4x4 AT6. Inside, the spacious family car offers seating for 7 passengers and the centre and rear rows of seats can be folded flat to free up utility space. With the 9-inch touch screen infotainment unit complete with an 8-speaker audio system with DVD/MP3 compatible CD player, audio streaming and Bluetooth connectivity as well as Android Auto functionality and Apple CarPlay. The satnav system is standard with both front and rear

Merc introduces the X-Class

When Merc announced that they would be entering the bakkie market last year, the international motoring media fraternity went into hyper drive. Their South African counterparts, choked on their coffee. “A bakkie? Mercedes Bens is launching a bakkie!?” To be fair though, the new Mercedes X-Class is not entirely new to the bakkie market. The bakkies destined for the South African market is manufactured by the Nissan-Renault alliance at its Barcelona factory in Spain. This means that the new X-Class is essentially a modified, spruced up Navara. This is not a bad thing either as the local motoring experts reckon that the Navara offers the perfect foundation and has helped Mercedes achieve their goal of the perfect balance between a comfortable ride and a powerful workhorse. The X-class chassis, suspension, transmission and 2.3-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder motor are all Navara. Unique to its class is the coil spring rear suspension which separates this bakkie from the rest (besides the Nissan) which employ leaf springs in their rear suspension. Does this mean you are basically buying a Nissan Navara with a Mercedes badge? Not at all. In fact, allowing Nissan to handle the mechanics of this new breed of bakkie, has freed up Merc to focus on the important things such as safety and luxury and the option to customize your vehicle to suit your needs.

There are currently two classes available at Mercurius Motors Tzaneen where the new bakkie was unveiled earlier this week. They are the Progressive and the Power models. The Progressive is the baseline model which will be perfectly suited for the farmer or the construction contractor, while the Power will appeal more to the taste of the urbanite. Between the two models there are the usual upgrade differences such as the rims, sideboards and the electric rear window. The interior of this bakkie screams Mercedes. From the perfect stitching on the super comfy seats, to the stylish finishing around the dash. Mercedes Bens says that there will be no safer bakkie on the market. Currently the pricing on the X-class is in the region of R640 000 (X-Class X220d 4X2 Progressive Manual Transmission)

and around R820 000 for the X-Class X250d 4X4 Power (Automatic Transmission). Mercedes has announced plans for a V6 X-Class to be released later this year, but there is currently no pricing available for that model. The vehicle was launched at a gala function on Friday evening, the 4th of May. The event coincided with the relaunch of Mercurius Motors Tzaneen branch and the announcement of their being awarded the top Mercurius Motors dealership in the country. The event was supported by many of the local businesspeople who saw to it that six of the nine X-Class models have already been sold on pre-order. The evening was graced by a keynote address by Johannes Fritz, CEO for Mercedes South Africa. Contact Yogi or Ridwaan at Mercurius Motors Tzaneen to book a test drive and find out more about the various pricing and upgrade options.

Unicorns visit Annies

On Thursday, the 3rd of May, Unicorn Preparatory School participated in away netball matches against Dr Annecke

Primary in Letsitele. Though, for the youngsters of both schools, it’s not always about winning matches, Unicorn

was delighted with the three out of seven victories they chalked up during the day’s plays. By sticking to basics, the teams played a clean, more consistent game of netball which

helped achieve those crucial turnovers and goal conversions. Final scores were U10 A won 15-3, U10B won 15-1, U11 lost 5-2, U12 A lost 15-0, U12B drew 7-7, U13A lost 19-7 and U13B lost 13-5.

Badgers school Kruinies The budding boy Badgers from Stanford Lake College travelled down the mountain to Curro Heuwelkruin for a day of top class hockey on Friday afternoon. This would be another in a series of League matches for the 2018 season. The U/15-teams took the astro first and seemed to size each other up nicely for the first quarter of the opening half. The Stanfordians then broke the stalemate with a brilliantly executed short corner off the stick of Musonda Musonda which was followed by a great goal by Junior Netshituni only a few moments after the restart. The Kruinies scored at the end of the half to keep them in the game sending Stanford into halftime commanding only a 2-1 lead. Not to be outdone on their home turf, Heuwelkruin came out of the blocks on all cylinders at the start of the second half and within minutes netted their equalizer to bring the game back on track. The tempo was upped by the relentless volleys into the Heuwelkruin D by the Stanford frontline

and soon the Kruinie keeper caved allowing the Badgers their victory goal, through Thomas Mayes, to win the match 3-2. The First team boys’ match was a fireworks display of brilliantly orchestrated plays executed with a type of panache expected on national senior level. Both sides were evenly matched and refused to give, but it was Stanford who managed to net the opener and set in motion an avalanche of attacks which kept the hosts on the back foot right through to the midway break. Stanford held a two goal lead as they entered the second half. Soon after the restart Warwick Melville put one against the backboard for the Badgers to increase their lead to 3-0. The hosts refused to throw in the towel and responded with a goal of their own moments later. It would prove to be a consolation goal however, as Stanford’s Devon Coad, managed a fourth just before fulltime to give the Badgers a 4-1 victory.
